Movie Review | A Nightmare on Elm Street (Bayer, 2010)
Tumblr media
Hey, what if we took a beloved, wisecracking horror icon and made him a pedophile? And we drowned the movie in overly slick, overly serious Platinum Dunes style so that is neither disarmingly scary like the original nor fun like the sequels? And if we cast a bunch of model looking types so that none of the characters feel like real teenagers? Would people like that?
So yeah, not good. Rooney Mara and Jackie Earle Haley actually aren’t bad in their roles, but they can’t save the movie. Haley did make me realize how much Freddy’s appearance depends on Robert Englund’s particular facial features. Also for some reason the parents are all really hot, so maybe this movie isn’t all bad. Also, I chuckled when the laptop went into sleep mode.
Aside from Freddy’s pedophilia being a terrible narrative decision on its own, I do think it undermines one of the scarier things about the original, that the characters were forced to deal with a horror they had no direct connection to. Sins of the father and all that. And the eventual defeat of Freddy feels more accidental than anything. I didn’t get the same sense of agency that made the last act of the original so thrilling.
Anyway, Freddy wasn’t saying “bitch” nearly enough, so when he popped up again at the end for one last scare, I may have growled “Yeah, bitch!” in a Freddy voice while watching this alone in my living room.

A Rewatch on Elm Street
Going through the Nightmare on Elm Street movies has given me more of an appreciation for the series' inventive moments and unique place among slasher series. The series is overall pretty solid and even the weaker ones have some impressive visuals and interesting ideas. The film where my opinion changed the most was Freddy's Revenge as my greater understanding of the film's subtext and its weirder atmosphere let me enjoy it more. I had recently saw New Nightmare in a theater at the Music Box, which was a great experience and helped convince me to revisit the rest of the series. I had also rewatched Freddy vs. Jason a while ago, which was entertaining if flawed. My overall ranking of the series is consistent, but I gained more enjoyment of the different stylistic takes of each movie.
