So I'm going to try to focus on Scaraman here as Jewel is being WORKSHOPPED TO HELL AND BACK and it's hard to pin down Lyman's mortal life when such a crucial character is in the works. So Lyman works a mind numbing tavern job after becoming a cosmic entity [how this happens ,,,uh workshopping that something something atomic bomb], Lyman is just a bottle of repressed rage at this point as he hates dealing with people and being the therapist for everyone is not a job he is suited for yet it's what he was given. Flash forward to him actually meeting scarab as an entity scarab was tasked with containing was inside lyman’s tavern, With lyman being the owner of this place he was questioned by scarab immediately, [lyme didn’t know shit like…at all] The lizard was compliant with scarab, eventually tracking the entity down. Lyman was crushing HARD after this encounter, he usually hated pretty much everyone he interacts with yet the insectoid caught his eye in a way that pulls at his hazy mortal memories, he asks or well…it came off more like begging for Scarab to come by again if…if he wanted  a thank you for ridding his tavern of such a nuisance. Scarab finds the lizard odd yet he’d never been thanked for his work before and found it flattering, weeks would pass of Lyman waiting around and second guessing himself, Scarab had not left his head at all, it made him sick to his stomach to think something else could have a grip on him like…..well ,,,,he doesn’t really want to dwell. Yet Scarab had been having an……awful day, being given a small amount of free time he decided to finally take the strange tavern lizard up on his offer. It was late, Lyman wringing a dirty rag having just finished the grueling task of washing all the glasses, when a loud and curt knock was at his door, He let scarab in, panicking at the meaning behind the visit and not  knowing how to properly present himself to the man who’s been owning his brain for weeks on end despite only speaking for a few minutes. Scarab asked for a drink in a tired voice, it was interesting to the lizard. He’d pictured the insectoid as a strong distant being of which nothing could phase yet he could hear the hints of weakness in his voice. The mask the being wore did not help as it blocked his ability to read people. Lyman served the auditor up his drink [despite having just cleaned up. This should upset him. If it was any other entity this WOULD have upset him to no end. Good job lizard you’re throwing all your sensibilities away just for mister tall red and spiky over there.] Yet Scarab looked so..tired, he sat there in his “i am listening” position taking up as little space as possible yet still being a presence, the silence was deafening, just them sitting there not speaking much to each other while Scarab quietly sipped on his drink. Lyman digging his claws into his arm and hoping not to puncture the fabric on his nice button down, The lizard would swallow the tension building up in his throat to ask a simple “..rough day huh?” causing scarab to let out an exasperated sigh and begin on a long winded rant about his boss, his coworkers, and feeling underappreciated. Lyman listened intently, nodding along and inserting his own criticisms of the workers whom he had met.

The rant became a lot more lighthearted, Scarab surprised another entity could hold similar viewpoints to him, whom didn’t just tell him to calm down, Lyman feeling safe enough in the conversation to now crack a couple jokes he’d been saving in his head for years now just for himself to chuckle at. They both had an enjoyable time being awful to those around them in private. It meant a lot to Lyman to be able to get Scarab to laugh a little, the insectoid’s visits become a lot more frequent, very slowly becoming a relationship. The events of fnc happen after this around the time scarab and lyman consider each other to be in an established relationship. [this is where it gets rough..also i just hit th bong i’m becoming incoherent and haven’t really polished this]  but after receiving the ping to investigate the time room scarab makes a beeline to lyman’s [pretty much to gloat about the fact the guy they dislike did something illegal heehoo =)] and lyman not..having anything better to do gets dragged along because scarab’s excited about something and he wants to be there..uhh Lyman shapeshifts into a horse while they’re in farmworld..thats  a thing that happens, anyways lyman begins to have a mental breakdown throughout all of it due to scarab’s absolute tunnel vision on capturing the crossovers …..the girls be fighting. Prismo is forced to play marriage counselor. Uhh lyman almost kills somebody,,,,,,,,he gets the auditor promotion. SORRY IT GOT ROUGH I’M STILL WORKING OUT A LOT OF SHIT UHHJJ SMILES =)

gillion and chip as hadestown!orpheus and eurydice

ok so i was listening to hadestown again because i love it dearly and i am still desperately trying to cope with ep 101 and i was like haha. chip and gillion as orpheus and eurydice. because yknow in the context of the actual myth you could compare it to the whole feywild arc and whatnot.

but then i listened to it more (more than halfway through the first song) and i realized it’s way better (worse) if you have it the other way around with chip as hadestown eurydice and gillion as hadestown orpheus. (there’s another way to read it too but we’ll get to that because it’s a bit more convoluted since. well it’s basically a game theory atp)

i’m going through this song by song because i have never felt happiness or peace ever

Road to Hell: ok so ignoring the gods for now. road to hell does eurydice a little dirty so for this song it’s just orpheus i’m talking about, but hermes describes him as a muse’s son and touched by the gods themselves. ok cool whatever so what Any Way the Wind Blows: “eurydice was a hungry young girl / a runaway from everywhere she’d ever been”? like yeah ok sure cool (side note? “ain’t nobody gonna stick around when the dark clouds roll” and  for chip, mr. constantly both afraid his crew will stay and will leave anytime something bad happens and who literally lost his family in the hole in the sea? silly.) plus for orpheus, “and this poor boy wore his heart on his sleeve / you might say he was naive to the ways of the world / but he had a way with words”. that’s my boy right there

Come Home with Me: most of this is just very funny (”oh, a liar and a player too?”) but “why would i become his wife?” “because he’ll make you feel alive” kinda got me a little tbh. and there’s also the ongoing theme of orpheus working on something to fix the balance of the world, which he can do because he’s touched by the gods.

Livin’ it Up on Top: most of this i’ll talk about when i talk about the gods because woo boy that should be a post of its own with how much psychological damage it caused me. but “there was a girl who had always run away / you might say it was in spite of herself / that this young girl decided to stay” for chip?

All I’ve Ever Known: yeahhhhhhhh nothing real metaphorical about this one. fnc shippers come get yalls juice ig idk that’s really all for that one

A Gathering Storm: title aside, the whole thing is eurydice being concerned about the practical way they will survive the winter while orpheus works on his song to make the world right again.

When the Chips are Down: hand to god i did not think about that pun until now. but yeah this whole song really sold it for me. “help yourself (to hell with the rest), even the one who loves you best / take if you can (give if you must), ain’t nobody but yourself to trust / aim for the heart (shoot to kill), if you don’t do it then the other one will” are interesting enough to think about with chip because basically his whole thing is not turning out like that but there are still some times (mainly early on) that he gets a little closer to those ideas. finally, “cast your eyes to heaven / you get a knife in the back”. put your life in the hands of anything but yourself and you get fucked over.

Wait for Me intro: alright one god i can pitch right now. hermes with the “so, just how far would you go for her? you got a ticket? yeah, i didn’t think so. course there is another way, but nah, i ain’t supposed to say.” being as mean as possible rn? hermes as niklaus would work as absolutely unfortunate as that is. which also makes the “ain’t no compass, brother, ain’t no map” line in the actual song even funnier since it’s hermes describing how to get to the underworld to save eurydice.

Wait for Me: the fates hit orpheus with the self doubt and worry that essentially he’s not the chosen one, part one. don’t really need to explain that one

Way Down Hadestown (Reprise): now hear me out on this. because hades’ whole bit is deals for people’s souls. eurydice signs a deal to give him her soul in exchange for not starving to death, and this song is her realizing what that really means and trying to defend it. which i will admit, makes it seem like it would work for niklaus too. but we’ll come back to that

If it’s True: “is this how the world is? to be beaten and betrayed and then be told that nothing changes?” now this one got me a little, between gillion’s ‘my last sin’ speech and what he said to jay in the block.

Intro to Wait for Me (Reprise): “it’s a trap?” “it’s a trial.” hermes explaining to orpheus and eurydice the conditions of them being allowed to leave. at the end of the day, according to hermes, their success rides on whether they trust each other and themselves. arguably the most recurring theme of riptide.

Doubt Comes In: orpheus doubting that he actually has the power to bring her back, thinking he has been tricked or is too weak to do it. in gillion’s own mind, his fatal flaw is not knowing if he believes he can be the chosen one or protect his friends. and for orpheus, he couldn’t.

a good amount of the songs are missing because i haven’t talked about hades and persephone yet. they’re. a separate issue

hmmm. usually i find a post on tumblr and go “:00 omg that’s amazing i love that i need to write that” LMAO. or like for riptide specifically if just be listening to an episode and go “yknow what this scene could make? an AMAZING fanfic idea :)” also of course reading other fanfiction

usually when i don’t have any inspiration for anything, i go searching through old ideas/wips or i try writing some stuff in my journal!! for some reason when i write on paper it gets my brain flowing faster :) i’ll write like a full page on paper then move to google docs lol

oooo this is a good one…. music is usually my first choice lol. like i’m writing in gillions pov rn so before i start writing, i listen to a few songs on my playlist for him. always gets the angst going 💪

other times, i’ll read some fanfic in their pov or i’ll just listen to a riptide episode lol. ALSO WRITING GILLION IS SO HARD WHYYY I CAN NEVER GET HIS VOICE DOWN….

Chip had the slightest guess that Gillion would tear the Undersea and Oversea apart to save him. That is, only if he were stupid enough to land himself in more trouble than he could handle. And yeah, Chip will give him that, he is a bastard.

On bad days, it scared Chip, how devoted Gill was. But on days like these where he couldn't tear his eyes away from Gillion nor imagine a life without him, he wouldn’t hesitate to do the exact same thing. He'd do it a thousand times over.

so this was my first time EVER writing chip and gillion (i was on like… episode 40 or something LMAO) and mann i just loved them <333 i don’t really know how to describe this snip lmao

i wanted to like. highlight that chip & gillion have bad days where things seem like too much. their so young and in love and that is NOT always a good mix. gillion has a strong loyalty to those he cares about and would do just about anything to protect them. also um. i did not know about what the prophecy said at this time so the line “tear the Oversea and Undersea apart” was a little on the nose huh??

but. idk what i’m saying really i wanted to show that their still in that young live phase where they bounce between “everything is beautiful i love you” and “this is too much what are we even doing”

not to mention chip DEFINITELY has quite a few self worth issues so. gill’s loyalty to him scares him because he believes he doesn’t deserve it :( just man. they are such a pair i love them <3333

Given characters as N.flying members

Introduction

Since I personally don't know the N flying members well, this blog is based on the perception of most of the other fellow fans I know. I will also be giving a short description on both the band and the anime series,

N flying is a South Korean rock band formed under FNC entertainment in 2013, the group had released its first digital indie single "Basket" in Japan on October 1 2013, the group debuted in Korea on May 20 2015, with their first EP including the lead single "Awesome". The group currently consists of the following members:-

Lee Seunghyub (Leader, vocalist, main rapper, rhythm guitarist), Cha Hoon (Lead guitarist, sub vocalist), Kim Jaehyun (Drummer), Yoo Hweseung (Lead vocalist) and Seo Dongsung (Bassist, Maknae).

Given is the anime which is based on the manga of the same name by Natsuki Kizu, the story follows around the lives of Ritsuka Uenoyama and his bandmates. One fine day Uenoyama comes across Mafuyu Sato who was sleeping on his favorite napping spot with a broken guitar, being desperate to defend his napping spot, Uenoyama decides to repair the broken guitar after which Mafuyu, being impressed, tries to persuade him several times to teach him to play the guitar, to which Uenoyama reluctantly agrees. After hearing Mafuyu's singing voice, Uenoyama was deeply moved by it and decides to recruit Mafuyu in his band as the lead vocalist, but Mafuyu's tragic past is holding him back.

The Members as the characters

Lee Seunghyub as Hiiragi Kashima

Hiiragi is described as a sweet guy who deeply cares for his friends, and as a leader, Seughyub is quite caring towards the rest of his bandmates, and sometimes for his fans when needed, like he had once saved one of his fans from a creepy stalker, because of their caring nature, both of them have a tendency to worry too much about others, after Mafuyu goes away and Shizusumi comes to comfort Hiiragi, he opens up about not being able to stop worrying, in one of the recent statement by Seunghyub where he wrote about being exhempted from his mandatory military service, he sounded quite apprehensive because, he was probably worried about offending his fans. One of the most prominent trait shared by both Hiiragi and Seunghyub is their "needy" nature, the fans often joke about how needy Seunghyub is for his younger members' affection. In Hiiragi's case, he seemed quite needy towards Mafuyu, because we often see him trying to meet Mafuyu over and over and talk to him, since he was quite desperate for Mafuyu's forgiveness.

Finally both of them are well known for nagging others, we see Hiiragi nagging Mafuyu from time to time, and Seunghyub is well known as the "King of Scolding" among the members and the fans alike.

Cha Hun as Ritsuka Uenoyama

At first glance, Uenoyama seemed like someone who is serious, aloof and the most "normal" member of his band, and this is usually the new fans' first impression of Hoon because, like Uenoyama he is pretty much of a grumpy cat and both of them can be quite scary at times. They are both described to be quite lazy, we see Uenoyama dozing off from time to time and let's not forget that he found Mafuyu at his favorite spot where he SLEEPS, as for Hoon we often see him mentioning that he hates to work out despite claiming to be athletic as a teen (this also reminds me of the fact that Uenoyama is in the basketball team, but we don't get to see him play that much), however they are both quite passionate towards their respective bands as the lead guitarists (both of them are highly skilled guitarists). Despite being a "cold" person we see Uenoyama warming up, showing his real, affectionate side as the story progresses. This also reminds me of Hoon because, he is actually quite soft and affectionate as well, especially towards his cat Romang and his bandmates.

Kim Jaehyun as Yuki Yoshida

If I really have to describe both of these young men in one word, it would be A Ray Of Sunshine, Yuki is described to be a really loud, cheerful guy who always seemed happy and is loved by everyone, these words can also be applied to Jaehyun as well because Jaehyun is no less charismatic than Yuki (Jaehyun really makes variety shows fun to watch). Both of them like to make other people smile, in the beach episode we see Yuki immediately apologising for saying "the ocean is gonna kill him" and then said that the ocean is awesome (in the beach episode it was evidient that he was trying his best to cheer Mafuyu up). Another common trait shared by both of them is that they like to "show off", Hiiragi describes Yuki as a flashy person who likes to show off, which reminds me of Hweseung once yelling that Jaehyun brags too much. However behind their cheerful aura, both of them are quite soft hearted, in Jaehyun's case, the first time fans saw him crying was when N flying won the award for their song Rooftop, and Yuki is well known to put on a brave face to hide his pain. Finally Jaehyun is described to be someone who is quite carefree in nature and the fact that Yuki nonchalantly told Mafuyu that he wants to make out with him in the bathroom at the beach in broad daylight shows that he is quite carefree as well.

Yoo Hweseung as Haruki Nakayama

Haruki is described to be a pure, kindhearted young man who is cheerful and carefree in his interactions, which is kind of similar to Hweseung, however Haruki can actually be quite shy and easily blushes when flattered, and despite having an extroverted personality, Hweseung was actually quite shy back in 2017 when he had joined the band as the lead vocalist. They are both super affectionate towards their bandmates because of which we see Haruki often spoiling his friends, Hweseung often talks about how hard his hyungs work and had also once mentioned how he wants to teach and take care of Dongsung more . Haruki is described to be the mediator of the band who often resolves conflicts which also reminds me of Hweseung being the "moderator" of the band. However both of them are sometimes seen to be quite insecure about their musical skills, Haruki is sometimes seen to be insecure about his skills compared to other members, which reminds me of Hweseung mentioning how he wants to improve more (despite have a very emotional yet powerful voice). They are sometimes seen teasing their bandmates, we once see Haruki was teasing Uenoyama with Akihiko by repeatedly calling him a "good boy", as for Hweseung, being one of the youngest members, he is well known for annoying his bandmates.

Seo Dongsung as Mafuyu Sato

Mafuyu is described to be a shy, introverted and reserved boy who has a hard time expressing himself, which reminds me of Dongsung who, being the new member of the band is no less reserved than Mafuyu because of which both of them appear to be quite mysterious. Mafuyu is shown to be a really obedient boy who goes to the Light Music club after Uenoyama tells him to learn guitar from them instead and his obedience is also shown when he goes for searching for a part time job after the day when the rest of his bandmates tells him to do so. In Dongsung's case he is described to be an obedient maknae as well. One of the prominent traits shared by both Mafuyu and Dongsung is their strong desire to learn, Hweseung once appreciated this trait of Dongsung and despite being shy, Mafuyu was actually quite determined about learning to play the guitar from Uenoyama and thus had repeatedly pursued him for that purpose. Their strong desire to learn makes both of them diligient when it comes to their respective bands and both of them are quick learners.

However despite being shy and sweet, they can at times be quite savage towards others, we see Mafuyu mocking at Hiiragi when he told that he (Hiiragi) is the vocalist, this reminded me of the time when Dongsung repeatedly posted "Hoon hyung is dumb" during one of their lives.

Conclusion

To be honest, I was not really confident about this blog because I thought that it might come off as innacurate and short, although it did not turn out to be short but I hope that it turned out good, I had been planning to post this for a long time although I initially thought of using Day6 members but, I found that N flying members are more suitable for the thread. Summary: Miyoung had to go and get Zuho from his studio and bring him home.

Miyoung stepped into FNC and greeted some of the trainees that were still roaming the company so late at night.

“Hello, Sunbae.” Miyoung smiled at two girls who seemed to be leaving to go home.

“Hi, girls,” she waved at them, “I see you’re working hard.”

“Yeah, our monthly evaluation is coming up,” the smaller of the two girls said.

“I hated those,” Miyoung grimace, earning a laugh from the girls.

“Yeah, but I think we’re ready,” the other smiled.

“I’m glad,” Miyoung smiled, and reached over and squeezed their shoulders. “I’m sure you’ll do well.”

“Thank you, Sunbae,” the girls smiled, tiredly. 

Miyoung watched as the girls walked out of the building, then turned to walk over to the elevator. She really did hope that the girls did well during their evaluations. She could only imagine how nervous they were.Those were some of the most stressful times in Miyoung’s life. She shivered at the thought.

The elevator dinged and Miyoung walked in as the doors opened. She checked her phone and sighed when she saw the time read 2:34 AM. Pressing the button for Juho’s floor, Miyoung grumbled to herself, “Workaholic.”

Walking out of the elevator, the vocalist made her way down the hallway to the rapper’s studio. The man had been staying late these past few weeks, and Miyoung had had enough. He needed to come home to get proper rest. The last few days, it was Inseong or Youngbin who had gone to get him, but after today’s grueling practice, they had fallen asleep. 

Miyoung didn’t blame them. The only reason she was still awake, was because she had lost track of time watching You. When she had gone out to the kitchen to get water, she went to check to see if the rapper was back yet, and saw that he in fact, was not. 

She quickly put some sneakers on and made her way to the company, knowing very well that he’d be there. 

Miyoung stood in front of the door and knocked before opening it. Upon entering, the blonde looked around the small studio. It was dimly lit, and there were empty coffee cups on the ground that hadn’t quite made it to the trash bin. 

Miyoung made her way to the desk, where she saw Juho hunched over, headphones on. He hadn’t heard her come, so Miyoung slowly reached out to poke him. 

Jumping slightly at the touch, Juho looked back to find Miyoung. He was confused to see her here. When did she get here? 

Miyoung could read the confusion on his face and smiled, “I came to take you home.”

Juho blinked, then looked at the time on the bottom corner of his computer screen. Half past 2. So he’d been here that long? Oops. 

“Come on,” Miyoung said, and reached over him to save his work. Juho panicked a bit as she did, but relaxed when she not only saved the work on his computer, but also on the flash drive that was sitting on the desk.

 “Why didn’t Youngbin or Inseong come to get me?” Juho asked grabbing his hoodie and throwing it on.

Miyoung turned the computer off and handed the man the flash drive, “They fell asleep, I’m guessing.”

“Were you asleep?” the rapper asked, guilt evident in his voice.

“Nope,” Miyoung smiled, shaking her head. “I was watching You, when I realized you still weren’t home.”

“What are you doing staying up so late? You should be sleeping.”

Miyoung raised a brow at the man, “Really?”

Juho gave a sheepish laugh when he realized that he wasn’t one to talk. Miyoung laughed at the sight of him, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.

“Do you have everything?” Miyoung asked, taking a look around the room.

Juho did the same, and nodded when he saw that he did have everything. The two then walked out of the room, Juho closing and locking the door.

“Did you come here on your own?” Juho asked as they rode the elevator down.

“Yeah, I called a taxi,” Miyoung said as she shoved her hands in the pockets of her (Jaeyoon’s) hoodie.

“It’s late. You shouldn’t have come on your own,” Juho protested.

Miyoung shrugged, “Maybe. But I wasn’t about to wake up someone else, and feel their wrath. Plus, I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself.”

Juho laughed when Miyoung rose on her tiptoes to make herself look taller. “I don’t think so, you barely make the cut for most rides at amusement parks,” the rapper smiled, walking out of the elevator.

“Punk,” Miyoung rolled her eyes and caught up to the man. They walked out of the building and Juho signaled a taxi. 

Once they got inside the car, Juho gave the man their address and the two settled in the back as they began to move. 

“You have to manage your time better. I get that you’re busy working on your projects, but I don’t want you overworking yourself. We already have a busy schedule as is,” Miyoung said as she looked out the window.

Juho turned to look at the girl and smiled softly, “I promise I’ll try harder.”

“You better, or else I’ll beat you up,” Miyoung turned to him, holding up her fist.

Juho laughed, and covered her tiny fist with his much larger hand, “Yes, Mom.”

Miyoung hissed at him, pulling her hand from his, but a smile made its way onto her face.

“I hate you sometimes,” she said, looking back out the window.

“Sure you do,” Juho chuckled, moving closer to the girl. She didn’t move away, but it may have been because she was already plastered against the car door. 

“Of all the groups for me to join, I had to get put into such a touchy one,” Miyoung said, trying to push Juho away, but he wouldn’t budge. She quit after about fifteen seconds of trying. 

“Just accept our love, Mimi,” Juho smiled. Said girl shook her head, but the smile never left her lips.

Mina and Jimin...

Former AOA member Mina dropped a bombshell on Instagram when she posted about being bullied by one of the members for 10 years, and cited her as reason for leaving the group. Fans quickly figured out who she was talking about, since Mina mentioned that the members father had recently passed away, and then Jimin posted the word “Fiction” on her Instagram, basically calling Mina a liar. She later deleted that post while Mina directly messaged her and said she wants an apology for all the things she has done to her. She even posted a picture of her self-injured wrist and doesn’t seem to be in a good state mentally. I hope she has some people around who can watch out for her, because we know someone with severe depression and suicidal thoughts needs a lot of love to slowly heal again. (If you are suffering from such things, please reach out to family/friends/teachers/emergency hotlines)

FNC Entertainment (Mina told them about the bullying) and the other members have not officially said anything yet. Some fans are now wondering whether Choa left for similar reasons as Mina, and whether other members and Seolhyun, who is best friends with Jimin, really didn’t know about what was going on for all these years. I’m sure Mina’s father passing away and FNC not letting her take a break also did a lot of damage. I hope Mina can heal from all of this and talking about it publicly will have a positive not negative effect on her. The following post from Mina is a lot to take, but she described a little of what she went through in those 10 years:

Mina says all of the AOA members and managers visited her house and talked. Jimin apologized and Mina accepted the apology but said she will work hard and continue with treatment. She can’t forget the past 10 years in one day but won’t make a “fuss” over it in public again. Full translation (x).

You (Jimin) must be finding it difficult to just come and apologize to me. Every time we got a new manager, you’d say that I was scary and just  pretending to be stupid. Why did you say I was scary and pretending to be stupid? You’d say I was acting stuck up just because I went to auditions and when I worked hard to diet so my face would look nicer, you’d say, “Mina, what’s wrong with your body? I hate seeing it. Gain some weight.” When we were trainees, you’d hit me and say it was because I was at the front. We’d have to say, “Did you have a good night’s rest?” “Yes, I’m sorry,” and “Thank you” in a formal tone to you.   Everything had to go your way, you could bring anyone you wanted to the dorms. It was so noisy that I went to the practice room to sleep. You’d say things like, “Hey, hasn’t so-and-so changed these days?” and go around targeting different members. Oh right, remember when I didn’t greet you first at the hair and makeup shop and I got an earful, or don’t you? That’s only the light stuff. There are so many things that were so much worse over 10 years. But thanks to you, I have nothing to lose and I’m not afraid of anything? Because my source of fear was you, your existence caused me stress. You couldn’t have seen that from my previous posts till now, right? It just became a part of my life and now, I’ve forgotten it all and all I’m left with is mental illness. Along with some harsh words.

Every time I wrote a will, I would include your name. I thought maybe when you read it one day, you’d feel guilty. I’d have stress-induced convulsions and collapse, I’d attempt to commit suicide and collapse, my mom would cry, and my sister is battling cancer, but they’d have to keep going to the emergency room because of me. I’ve never talked back to you, and have I ever done anything wrong from when we were trainees to when we debuted and promoted? If I did, tell me. Did you not like me because I wasn’t good at flattery? But I still did my best. Whether I was told off or not, I would smile and keep approaching you, putting aside my pride. I was amazed to hear that you were taking prescribed medication for your mental health and were having  a hard time. You said everything you wanted to say and did almost  everything you wanted to do, you were so selfish. I was so envious of  you. Of course, everyone has struggles but at least you were able to freely express that? I always had to push it down. I’m not in the right  state of mind right now. But the person who made me like this is you. The person who made my family suffer is you. I used to be strong  mentally. When I was a trainee, I’d say it was because you’re the leader and told myself to pity you. But it’s still the same after all these years. I couldn’t tell anyone that I was suffering because of you.

Things finally exploded when it came time to renew contracts and that’s when my family found out. Did my family ever say something to you? Even when their daughter was attempted to commit suicide because of someone, they never got angry. You were able to cry when you wanted to and you received so much comfort. I was worried you’d tell me off again so for 10 years.. How did I spend that time? By the end, I had almost 200  sleeping pills because of you. I collapsed and I have no memory of that. I wrote your name on an A4 piece of paper and told my mom that I was sorry, and that’s how I still live every day. I’m broken as much as I  can be broken. Because of me, my mom is also suffering from depression, did you know? You are the one person who makes me not want to live, I’m  serious, you’re the only reason. Even if you came and sincerely apologized to me, I’m already broken so I collapse, I suddenly start  crying, I take out a knife, I write ‘Shin Ji Min’ down on a piece of  paper. I’m so broken and I’m so full of anger that my heart aches and I feel like I’m going crazy. I’m sorry to my mom, dad, and sister.

Can’t  you at least tell me why you hate me? With everything you did to me, you can’t say that you didn’t hate me. I’m so upset. I feel upset whenever I open my eyes. I feel like I’m going crazy. It’s so difficult. When you were sitting in the front passenger seat and turn back to us, my heart  would start racing because I thought you’d say something to me. I want  an apology from you. What will that do? I don’t know. But I feel like I need to something because I’m so angry. There’s no reason for why you tormented me, is there? Shin Ji Min, huh? I wish you could feel what I feel for just one day, I wish I could go back in time and change one day with you. You’ve had a comfortable life. Say something. Let’s hear it.  What did you hate about me that much? Huh? I really hate you too. If it  wasn’t for you, what would I be like now? At least I probably wouldn’t be crying every day, having nightmares every day, and trying to attempt suicide, right? Because I did nothing to do, I honestly want to go  around talking about you and telling people that I have a mental illness because of you. That’s why I’m like this now, sad, isn’t it? It’s  finally boiling over after being pent up. I can’t hold it in anymore, I can’t hide it anymore.

I heard you took medication and fell asleep, must be nice. I’m dunking my head in my sink and trying to not cry. I can eat  more than ten sleeping pills and not fall asleep, amazing, isn’t it? I’ll stay up for days so I can sleep. Even if I slit my wrists and the  floor of our house is covered in blood, I zone out. I blankly think about when I’m going to die, and some people have come running to save me, right? Why does there have to be so many people who are suffering because of me? Are you sleeping well? As soon as I heard that, I got angry again, teared up, and filled with rage. I’m strange, so strange. Try living a life where you have to dunk your head in the sink all the  time. It sucks. You are such a bad person. You have to know that. I want  to sleep too. I want to get a proper night’s sleep too. Why does  everyone around me have to suffer because of you? Why did you make me  such a bad person? I want to stop worrying people. But I’m so angry, I’m  so upset, I feel like I’m going crazy. Stop sleeping and apologize. Wake up, let me stop feeling broken anymore. Wow, I’m so angry.

My dream probably won’t come true, right? But if you’re a  human being, you shouldn’t act like that. And FNC Entertainment, I told  them everything at the end. I was half out of my mind, I couldn’t even open my eyes properly, and I stuttered. I hadn’t fully recovered from  taking hundreds of sleeping pills but I told them it was because of Jimin and they wouldn’t listen to me. Who should I talk to? I shouldn’t get angry? I’m like this every day. I’ve been living like this every day and you just didn’t know because I didn’t talk about it. From when I was 21 years old [Korean age reckoning], I’ve been hiding my medicine bottles and secretly taking medication so I could hold on. I’ve lived like this. Shin Ji Min, because of you. Because of that person who is sleeping so well right now.

To all those who are suffering because of someone...Fight. Don’t hold it in. Or grab someone and tell them. Sleeping pills?  Don’t take them. It will never end. Don’t live like me. Don’t hold it  in. Do everything you want to do and express yourself. Please live like  that.

15 Underrated Girly Kpop Songs That Make Me Go Absolutely Feral

When it comes to girl groups, more than anything I am a Blackjack and Blink. I like to listen to girl songs that make me want to murder men (and believe me, that blog post is in the works). But I’m also a ONCE, as TWICE are my sweet darling babies, but they’re about as girly as I can tolerate. I’m not one for the super girly concepts. I mean, did you guys ever see MINX? Occasionally I ironically jam to Shakey Love Shakey Shakey Shakey Shakey Love, but it was an absolute blessing from the K-pop gods to rebrand them as Dreamcatcher. It’s really only the A-list girly songs I tolerate, like GFriend or Oh My Girl. Everything else below them just seems really cringy.

Except for a few chosen few that are so good that they make me absolutely lose all of my shits. And I’m talking about songs that nobody seems to know like at all. Either these songs came out when the groups were still under the radar, before they had their big smash hits, or they just never seemed to rise to the top. But they are still valid and important. Videos are linked in the song names, since Tumblr won’t let me add more than five videos, but here we go.

15. April- Dream Candy

April is one of those rare groups that pull off the girly concept so well but don’t ever seem forced, like they are just truly naturally sweet and pure and precious. Honestly all of their songs are great, and it’s tragic that they haven’t had a comeback in 2019. But their debut, Dream Candy, is the one that really gets deep in my soul to that animal part of my brain that makes me scream this god damn chorus. But only really at the end. I never really listened to this song until it came on shuffle one day when I was walking home in the rain, and thought, why not listen to this awkward girly song, and then the last chorus hit and OH MY GOD. It’s a good one guys.

14. Momoland- Jjan! Koong! Kwang!

So this song comes out by some unknown group called uh, Momoland?, with a title that is just a bunch of sounds that don’t exist in English, and I felt like I was the only one on Earth that was like, “This is fine.” I was honestly in some I Am Legend universe where instead of me being the only living person on Earth, I was the only one that liked Momoland’s debut. As time went on Momoland started putting out what is pretty much some of the worst K-Pop that exists (I mean, have you SEEN the video for Wonderful Love? Try not to cringe challenge) and sadly enough this group just faded into obscurity and never had any huge, Earth shattering hits or anything. 

13. DIA- My Friend’s Boyfriend

On paper this song is awful. I mean it’s a song about being a petty bitch who has decided to steal their friend’s boyfriend, hence the title. Also the song ads cute little quirks like *squints eyes to read this metaphorical paper closer* coughing. Also the video has an unnecessarily long intro. But believe me when I tell you that this is an absolute slapper.

12. Gugudan- Wonderland

It’s a crime that Gugudan has never really hit it off, even with two I.O.I members. Their debut has this amazing Little Mermaid concept and believe me when I tell you that this chorus is best when screamed at the top of your lungs. After all the screaming I am basically in a manic state by the la la la’s.

11. LOONA 1/3- Love&Live

You’ll notice that the main theme of this list is that the choruses are absolute fire. But this one comes in and basically knocks the wind out of me with sweetness, like some kind of aegyo Kool-Aid man. It’s really the music that does it for me in this one, along with the melody, along with Heejin’s perfect high note. If this song doesn’t make you smile then you are a robot, like ViVi. 

10. Shannon Williams- Why Why

If Ant and/or Dec were here, they would hear this song and definitely say that Britain’s Got Talent. Shannon is the British IU,hands down, undeniably, I will not be taking questions at this time. But it’s very sad that her career was nonexistent after this came out. Was it the fact that this features a sixteen-year-old grinding against faceless boys? Or that this video widely revolves around her intensely stalking someone? It can’t be the song because that is perfect. 

9. AOA- Bingle Bangle

Okay so some history for those non-Elvises out there. AOA was THE HOTTEST girl group for a good minute, with so many timeless collaborations with the Brave Brothers that really changed the shape of female K-Pop for a while. And then ChoA left the group. And without the only member who could actually sing the face of the group, AOA kind of went quiet, save for a few Jimin solo songs. Then AOA came back with a new sound, and while everyone else thought it was terrible, I thought it was a bop! And I love the video and the concept! And the dance for this is so fun. Bingle Bangle is a real yes for me dawg. It’s only too bad that they lost yet another member and their concept was handed off to FNC’s new girl group. Speaking of which...

8. Cherry Bullet- Really Really

Yeah so they literally gave this entire “girls in a video game but it’s fun and cute” concept to Cherry Bullet, and they hit the ground running with it. This comeback in particular is my favorite of theirs because it hits one of my favorite pop music tropes: Having A Funky Instrumental Chorus, Only At The End To Put Words Over The Music. It ticks all my boxes.

7. Rainbow- Whoo

If you ever wanted to hear a song that made you scream “RAAAAIIINBOOW AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!” then this is it. At this point in this list we start to hear the songs that make me truly insane, and this song absolutely destroys me. It’s really sad, however, that this is basically Rainbow’s swan song, as it was their last song before disbandment. 

6. Matilda- Macarena

I bet you haven’t even HEARD of Matilda. I bet you didn’t even KNOW that MATILDA just DISBANDED a FEW MONTHS AGO because ALL THEIR SONGS WERE BAD except for THIS ONE which is just full of CHAOTIC GOOD ENERGY and if you don’t ENJOY THIS then GET OFF MY LAWN. 

5. Berry Good- Angel

Berry Good was destined to be one of those girl groups, like Matilda, that came from a tiny company and was just given bad songs and were set up to fail. So they crowdfunded, and somehow made two incredible comebacks, Don’t Believe (which is a whole other story that we won’t get into today, but it’s an amazing song that you should check out) and prior to that, Angel. I don’t even know where to begin with this song because it literally makes me forget who I am and why I exist. It’s a banger?? This song starts off so soft and pure and jumps right into a chorus that makes you bang your head and scream “I TAKE A CHANCE, YOU NEVER KNOW” as loud as possible. And right when you think you can’t take it anymore, that you are gasping for air because you are drowning in perfection, THEY GO EVEN HARDER. Like, girls, you did not need to go that hard. Holy shit. They go full IU in Good Day. I don’t know why we were blessed with this, especially since after this all their other songs have been garbage, and they’ve been so unsuccessful that they lost their strongest member and they’re heading for disbandment. But we have this gem, and I’m thankful for it.

4. 4Minute- Heart To Heart

Back when 4Minute was just another 2NE1 clone, trying to compete in the market of “Girls Who Look Tough But Are Actually Sweet” 4Minute, aka The HyunA Group, put out this. Third Geners, this is what Second Gen was all about. This is the meaning of Christmas, Charlie Brown. This song is everything. It’s perfect. And it’s too bad that 4Minute didn’t really stick with this sound, but also not, since with their more mature concept they wound up getting pretty famous once Park Bom... I mean, we’re not gonna talk about it. 

3. Hyolyn- Bae

Okay so I know that Hyolyn as an entity is not technically considered underrated, but her entire solo career is being slept on and I don’t understand. With Sistar gone, and now Red Velvet carrying the torch for summer anthems, Hyolyn doesn’t necessarily have to give us one of the best summer songs of all time but she did. Every second of this song to me is perfect. And yeah okay I’ll admit it, I am a Gay, I am attracted to women, and Hyolyn is a lot of. A lot of wow. She and HyunA are exactly my type, and this video is a lot. But the SONG you guys. It’s so much that I told even regular people who listen to English music to listen to this song. They didn’t, of course, because the world doesn’t appreciate Hyolyn like I would, I mean like I do as a fan and nothing else. This song was my summer anthem in 2018, Power Up wishes it was this good.

2. BESTie- Thank U Very Much

One of the things that really got me into K-Pop during the Second Gen was that it sounded so much like pop music from my youth. This is gonna sound weird, but I grew up in a Wiccan Neo-Pagan household where 90% of the music we listened to was traditional Celtic or New Age, and if it was ever anything else it was like The Beatles (my Mom and her sisters were one of those screaming and fainting Beatles fans, the trait that was clearly passed down to me, based on what happened when I saw G-Dragon live, but that’s another story) or ABBA, or any kind of British/European pop/rock from the 70s or 80s. So once I was old enough to really find out what kind of music I liked, I dived deep into cheesy pop songs like S Club 7, Britney Spears, and the like. But I always had a soft spot for ABBA. The melodies, the music, the strange lyrics that didn’t really make sense or weren’t quite grammatically correct but it worked. I feel like that love for obscure pop, along with the 90s and early 2000s bubblegum pop, pushed me right into the K-Pop scene. And this song is the best example of that kind of weird melody with oddly used English words, but it works in the best way. The chorus of this song sounds like it was written by ABBA. The ending of this song is transcendent. Tell me you can’t picture a Korean Meryl Streep in overalls singing the ending of this song while dancing on a beach. This song makes me lose all my shits. But I do have to say that this video is uh, Not Good, especially compared with how amazing the song is. But these underrated bottom of the barrel groups don’t have much to work with in the first place, so we can’t really fault them. This song holds up, and is going to hold up for a very long time. I stan.

1. Laboum- Shooting Love

So like I said before, I don’t typically like the super sugary, super tacky, super girly girl concepts. BUT I LOVE LABOUM. ALL their girly sweet songs are AMAZING. They somehow get everything right, in their own unique way. They’re not at all like “Oh, they’re like GFriend”, “Oh, that’s like Lovelyz” or anything, if you get what I’m saying. Laboum had their own cheesy yet perfect style of girly. Aalow Aalow: A CLASSIC. Journey To Atlantis: A CLASSIC. Hwi Hwi: A CLASSIC. Only U: YES YOU GUESS IT, CLASSIC. Sugar Sugar: DON’T MAKE ME SAY IT AGAIN. I could have made this whole list with just Laboum songs. So I made myself pick one by listening to as many old Laboum songs as I could before I would become an absolutely menace to society, as I am not responsible for my actions after listening to so much girly perfectlon at once. If I was arrested and went to court for I dunno, causing distress and mayhem to the citizens of my city, my lawyer would call it “the Laboum defense.” “You see, Your Honor, my client listened to a lot of Laboum songs, and lost control of themselves and became an entity, a ball of energy, a comet destroying everything in its path while screaming cheesy Korean lyrics.” And I would be set free, of course, because who wouldn’t lose themselves completely to the power of Laboum? But anyway I picked Shooting Love, as it puts me in a manic state from the very intro until the last second. And let me just say now that I deeply mourn this old Laboum, as they came back in 2018 with a new concept that makes them sound lobotomized compared to their old sound. Like slow R&B is fine, but compared to this it’s drab and slow and dull and I hate it. I Hate It. Bring back cute Laboum in 2020, or at least study Apink if you want to see how to properly change an aging cute group into a mature group. I could go on, but now I have the urge to listen to more Laboum. You’ll see me on the evening news tonight, I’m sure.

On June 7th, the 4 unit rock band from Korea NFLYING held their ‘N.Flying 2019 LIVE IN JAPAN -BROTHERHOOD-’ concert in Shinkiba Studio Coast, Tokyo. It was a concert accompanying the release of their 1st Japanese Album Brotherhood on May 22nd. Included in this album was a Japanese version of the Korean chart-topping Rooftop, which gave them a huge breakthrough. Following this, their first Japanese tour saw huge success, selling out across all 3 performances including Diamond Hall in Aichi and Big Cat in Osaka.

Additionally, the 1st album commemorative release events held in Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo simultaneous to their tours also finished with great success. On the last day, the event was held on basement 1F of Tower Records Shibuya. However, the line stretched from 9F to basement 3F, and pushed the scheduled finishing time back by 4 hours. Despite this, the members greeted fans with warm smiles from start to finish, and received overflowing praise on twitter for ‘incredible service for 9 hours.’

During interviews for their album Brotherhood, the members would eagerly say things like ‘we’re happy to be able to hold concerts’ and ‘we hope to hold a concert soon.’ Even during this live, they said ‘we’re happy to be able to hold concerts’. The shared this happiness with a full-house of fans, who filled Studio Coast to the fullest capacity in its history. In this place, everyone became one through music and it became a night of shared happiness.

NFLYING is the ‘Cinderella Story’ of the 2019 Korean music industry. Soon after the new year, they released Rooftop. After finishing its (promotional) activities, steadily there was an increase in word-of-mouth. Approximately a month and a half after its release, the song began its chart reversal. It was the first time they had acquired the number 1 spot. In March, in an unusual move, they restarted their promotional activities and also claimed their first number 1 spot on broadcast. As the current ‘hot stars’, the passion of the fans who had been waiting impatiently was also tremendous. As soon as the opening SE (sound effects) began to play, the fans raised their fists while screaming ‘Waah!’. The members were greeted by this as they entered (the stage).

In this concert was: Lee Seunghyub (Vo, Rap), Cha Hun (Gt), Kim Jaehyun (Dr), Yoo Hweseung (Vo), accompanied by their senior, FTISLAND’s Lee Jaejin to support them as (guest) bassist. Upon entering the stage, Seunghyub screamed ‘What’s up Tokyo? Make some noise!’ before they began to play The World is Mine and Lupin from Brotherhood in quick succession. The richness and overwhelming quick rhythm from the twin vocals had the audience’s hands stretching toward the stage. It was also likely the first time for them (NF) to feel this sense of unity being born right from the start.

Within their setlist they showcased all of their songs from the album Brotherhood, while also weaving in their teppan* (?) songs. As has become the norm since Hweseung joined, during the concert they also performed an elaborate collection of songs arranged into an ‘NFLYING style’ in a mash-up medley.

*(Could mean like ‘tasting platter’ teppan style. Meaning short snippets of songs of their choosing)

This time they also showcased a Queen Medley, which was uploaded to their dedicated Japanese Youtube channel (opened in February). Imitating Freddy Mercury, Hweseung picked up the mic stand and announced ‘there’s something I want to do.’ He had fun doing the ‘eeeh oh’ call-and-response from the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with the fans on the floor.

While wearing black hats, they also performed a Michael Jackson Medley which was prepared specifically for this tour. Hweseung said, ‘Covers are fun, so I want to study them.’ However, he has (already) been showcasing covers of Japanese songs including ones from Aimyon and Yonezu Kenshi in his ‘Try to Sing’ series on his Youtube channel. As a vocalist, Hweseung’s skill, range and expressiveness added to NFLYING seems to have allowed the band to gain musical freedom.

Additionally, Seunghyub who is a vocalist alongside Hweseung, will (in future) not have to focus only on vocals, but can also rap. With Seunghyub the vocals are rich, and the NFLYING-like ‘mixture sound’ is established. The twin vocals are NFLYING’s greatest weapon. Seunghyub, who was on piano during Run, Heal the World and the Michael Jackson Medley, then acoustic guitar for Delight, is a man of many talents. As the main songwriter for Brotherhood and the writer/composer of the huge hit song Rooftop, Seunghyub is displaying the results of his blossoming musical talents.

Then there is the guitarist who unveils his hardcore guitar (skills) Hun, who greatly respects Slash (Guns N’ Roses) and Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge). Also Jaehyun who, although he is a drummer, is the charming mood maker who draws your attention within songs. While watching the concert, just like the title of the album Brotherhood, the strength of the member’s relationship lies in their musical bond. Through this, I feel as they have been pushed into a higher stage.

From the time of their Rooftop activities, they became a 4 member band. In regards to this, Hun said, “I’ve always wanted to say this. I’m sorry for always causing you to worry. At the beginning of this year we had a big turning point. We, who were always chasing after our dreams together like brothers came apart. Our hearts hurt. The more I thought of everyone who was always cheering us on, the more painful it was. However, your voices saved us.”

He was met with loud applause.

“We wish to repay you with great music and great concerts.” He conveyed his gratitude to the fans.

This time, the empty bass position was filled by Jaejin, a veteran who is in his 12th year since debut. He plays with live-band veteran FTISLAND, and playing with NFLYING this time, I expect they also gained something from him.

“Is there anything we can do to repay you for this?” Jaehyun asked Jaejin in regards to the matter.

To which Jaejin proposed, “We have FNC Kingdom right? Our (FTISLAND’s) vocalist will need to leave us (for army enlistment), however me, Seunghyun (Gt) and Minhwan (Dr) will be performing. Because I helped you out this time, please help us out next time. With that, we’ll be even.”

It seems the brotherhood between FTISLAND and NFLYING will deepen at FNC Kingdom.

From the middle of the stage, came their newest Korean song Spring Memories. It was their first time using acoustic guitars for their (lead) promotional track. As they played this gentle song, loud fan-chants rose from the venue.

The final stage opened with Delight, with Hweseung singing lyrics which conveyed their thanks, and which spoke of the red, star-like lights from the fans which connect NFLYING and NFIA. They performed their Korean debut song Awesome as well as other nostalgic songs.

During their MC section, a surprise announcement was made to their fans. They announced that they were to release a Japanese single in November, and perform their first hall concerts in Nakano Sun Plaza across two days.

Hun revealed excitedly “We’ve started preparing the music and there will be a double title track. Our commemorative release event will be held at Nakano Sunplaza. We’re finally able to perform in halls!”

Seunghyub added reverently, “It’s thanks to all of you that we were able to ascend those stairs. Just a little, Budokan is coming into our sights. Will you keep an eye on our dream with us? For as long as I live, I will never forget this day. Stand by you! Stand by me! Please remain by our side from now on too!” before launching into the lead track of the album Stand by Me.

Matching the rhythm of the drums, calls of ‘Hey!’ rose from the floor as a sudden sense of unity rose for Endless Summer.

To finish, Seunghyub blew a kiss into the audience and said, “We decided on this song for our final song. You gifted us with 1st place, and it was with this song that we were reborn. Your support connects to our current and future dreams. Thank you so much!”

As he conveyed his gratitude, they started singing Rooftop -Japanese ver-, with the audience singing along passionately. They brought it to a close as one, with the highest tension of the day.

During the encore, Hweseung said, “Because you all requested it, today there is one (an encore). From now on, please continue to shine your red lights on us.”

Jaehyun: “When we were the opening act for our seniors, the lights from the audience seemed to float like stars in the universe. Today, I was able to witness NFLYING’s universe. Please continue to exist in NFLYING’s sparkling universe from now on too.”

Hun: “Even if we perform in bigger venues, the image of our first live in Shibuya Cyclone (a venue with 300 capacity) in 2013, remains in my heart. I hope to grow without forgetting my original intentions.”

Seunghub: “I’ve said that in Nagoya and Osaka we wished to convey our power to you. However, instead we received power from you. We want to become a force to be reckoned with.“

One by one they expressed their gratitude. Lastly, the supporting Jaejin also spoke.

“So that NFLYING can become an amazing band from here on out, please give them lots of love,” he conveyed warmly to the fans.

After finishing all 3 songs in the encore Leave It, Fall With You and Songbird, everyone gathered in the centre of the stage. However, for a second time, voices called loudly for an ‘encore’ without stopping.

Seunghyun said in bewilderment as everyone gathered to discuss, “This is a new situation…but if we can stay on stage longer, it makes me happy.”

They played a double encore with Stand by Me. From the audience, shouts of joy sounded, once again showing incredible excitement. Hweseung turned his mic to the audience and shouted echoingly with great strength, as if his happiness were about to explode. Seunghyub gave a thumbs up and said “You’re the best!”

When they all gathered for the final time in the centre of the stage, they gave their final greetings without a mic. “This was NFLYING!”

Having done this, they all gathered around the supporting Jaejin and hugged him in gratitude.

NFLYING began indie activities in Japan in 2013, and have doggedly persevered for 6 years to reach where they are today. They were able to put out a concert overflowing with passionate emotions. However, here, I was able to witness their gratitude to their fans and the member’s strong brotherhood with each other. Looking back in the coming years, I believe this concert will have become a milestone.

“…He didn’t come..” you whispered, lowering your head

“What do YOU MEAN hE DIDN’T COME??” Jaeyoon screamed

“He stood you up??!”

“…No, my friend told him not to come…He..”

“He wHAT?”

“…He made a bet with his friends over drinks… If I fell for him, he would win..”

Honestly, you weren’t that sad about it

What you could not handle that moment was the embarrassment that you felt admitting it

More so in front of the boys

And just when your eyes started to water

“Alright everyone!” Dawon suddenly spoke up, rolling up his sleeves

“Grab your hunting rifles, its scum season!”

“Imma put his ass on my fireplace!” Jaeyoung joined the frenzy

You watched as Youngbin nodded to himself

Then proceeded to give assassination orders to the maknae line

To which they complied right away in all seriousness

You widened your eyes at the randomness of the situation

Zuho, the only sane enough, was still standing beside you

Face palming for all eternity

An amused chuckle escaped your lips

Seeing this, a soft smile appeared on Zuho’s lips as his hand found its way to your shoulder

“It’s going to be ok you know..Don’t worry too much about it. He’s the one losing here”

“Besides it looks like he won’t be seeing the light of day for long” he said and he nodded towards his members

“I guess you’re right” you laughed

“Imma go bring drinks, be right back”

Once he left, since the boys were still doing their insane gigs

You were standing alone in a corner

Still not being able to address the elephant in the room

Rowoon still hadn’t talked to you

All this time, all he did was listen

He didn’t come to nag at you

He didn’t come to comfort you

Maybe he took that fight you two had earlier more seriously than you expected?

As all these thoughts ran through your mind

A hand extended your way

Looking up, you saw Rowoon holding a water bottle in front of you

“..Thanks..” you mumbled as you took the bottle from his grasp

And without replying back to you, he left

This continued for quite a long time

It was getting on your nerves honestly

And since you were not that tolerant with this kind of treatment

Your fuse started to lit up

It’s was a short fuse really

So few minutes after, you were sitting next to him, munching the snacks Zuho had brought, in silence

And you weren’t having any of this anymore

“Yah..”

He still wasn’t looking at you but you knew he was listening

“Yah! Kim Seokwoo! Just talk to me already!”

Rowoon stopped eating as his gaze fell upon you

“What?”

“Don’t “What” me! Aren’t you gonna say I told you so??”

“What if I do? Is it gonna change anything?”

“No it won’t but at least you can talk to me!”

“You won’t listen to me anyway so why would I?” oMG someone’s rEALLY SALTY

“..You’re unbelievable..”

“Oh, so I’m the bad guy again!”

“Well I’m sorry for not always listening to your all mighty reason!”

“Maybe if you did, you wouldn’t be feeling this shitty over this scum now!”

At this point both of you were standing up, shouting at each other, while the rest of the members were all gathered in the middle of the room, eating theirs snacks like they’re eating popcorn on the cinema

“Rowoon, I made this mistake myself and it should affect only me but apparently you’re feeling this way more than I do, giving me the silent treatment and such!”

“Well, I’m sorry for being protective over you and worrying about your well-being and happiness! It’s not gonna happen again!”

“Oh my- No, you know what? Since you already know what’s best for me, why don’t YOU date me instead?! Save me the hassle!!”

“Maybe I will!!”

“Fine then!”

Which made your cheeks flush way more than they did before

Resulting you to clench your fingers on his shirt tightly from embarrassment

Feeling this, Rowoon smiled to himself cheekily

“Yah, Rowoon-ah, I thought you stopped acting during our album promotions!” Jaeyoon said mockingly

“What drama is this??” Hwiyoung followed, completely overjoyed

As the mayhem continued, you could not find yourself being able to leave Rowoon’s arms

Not that you wanted to leave in the first place

But you were also WAY too embarrassed to face the members

“Don’t even try to get your hands off me, my face is still red” you whispered so only Rowoon could hear you, your face still hidden in his chest

“So cute…Don’t worry I got this” he spoke softly

“Hey, all of you! Back to practice! We wasted enough time!”

“But it’s only-“

“You do want to eat jjajangmyeon tonight right?”

“You wouldn’t!” Dawon cried

“Make me choose, see what happens~” Rowoon sang

“bACK TO PRACTICE YOU LAZY ASSES” Dawon basically dragged everyone into the middle of the room

Rowoon, now wearing a victorious smile on his lips, turned his eyes upon your figure hiding inside his arms

“Better?” he smirked

All you could do was nudge your head on his chest, still embarrassed to look up

He lowered his head, reaching yours, as the breathed through your soft hair

“Good”

July 8, 2018: Blackpink in your Area

안녕하세요,

I was already on my third week here in Seoul and I still haven't gone out and explore the city at all. So I did what a regular international student would do here in Seoul - I went on a K-Pop adventure.

I wanted to visit the idol cafés all around the city, but upon further research, I found out that many of them are so spread out in opposite corners so I had to narrow everything down to the accessible areas and save the rest for another day. For example, I wanted to visit the filming locations of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (Yeokdo-yojeong Kim Bokjoo/역도요정 김복주), especially Bok Chicken, but the locations are just too far from the ones I had planned to go that day.

On Sunday, July 8, I visited four idol cafés and restaurants: Yesung's Mouse Rabbit, Donghae's Haru & One Day, Chanyeol's Viva Polo, and Jongsuk's 89 Mansion. I decided to just visit the cafés that day and maybe take my time and sit down to study in each one during exam week.

First stop: Super Junior's Yesung's Mouse Rabbit (Mobit) Café

My first stop took me to the area around Konkuk University called Kondae (건대), which was packed with clothing stores and street foods. This quick walk made me realize how empty the day and night life are around Anam-dong, the area surrounding Korea University. Street vendors would yell across the street for the people to buy tteokbokki (spicy rice cake/떡볶이) or cheap clothes from them, compared to Anam-dong where it is quiet most of the time, with a group of friends laughing in a corner once in a while.

I managed to find Mouse Rabbit after a couple minutes of being lost and getting distracted by the nice clothes in the shops around Kondae (건대). The exterior of the café was not very impressive and it was situated in an isolated area. I entered Mouse Rabbit, looked at the price list and left. I was not about to blow ₩10,000 on a latte when I had other cafés to visit - sorry Yesung.

I left Mouse Rabbit and headed to Donghae's Haru & One Day, which was one subway stop away.

Second stop: Super Junior's Donghae's Haru & One Day Café 

Following the instructions on the blog, it was very easy to spot Donghae's café - it was right in front of the exit! I liked the exterior look and the vibe of the café and the interior was also really nice. Donghae has a big portrait of Audrey Hepburn hanging on the wall, contributing to the minimalist and relaxing ambience of the place. I could really see myself studying in a place like this - honestly, who needs to study in the library or Starbucks in Seoul when you have idol cafés. You're still drinking overpriced coffee, you're still sitting on a coffee table overlooking the busy streets - the only different is that you have a higher chance of meeting an idol when they do decide to visit their cafés.

Third stop: EXO's Chanyeol's Viva Polo

Well, Chanyeol's mom owns and runs the restaurant, but this place was Chanyeol heaven! The blog I abe linked doesn't mention this but when you do take the subway, make sure to take the one going to Sangil-dong (상일동) and not Macheon (마천). Line 5 splits in Gangdong (강동), so make sure to get off there if you end up taking the wrong train (heading to Macheon/마천) and just board the next one, which is usually headed to Sangil-dong (상일동) since they both alternate.

From Donghae's Haru & OneDay, it took me a good 40 minutes to wait and ride for the subways, so Chanyeol's place was the most "out of the way" location I had during the day.

Viva Polo is located on the second floor, so you have to take the stairs up, but the whole stairway has pictures and drawings of Chanyeol plastered all over with written notes and presents left by the fans of the EXO member. Unfortunately, I arrived there around 3:40 PM and they close the restaurant for break from 3-5 PM. I had more than an hour to spare, and I did not know what I would do until then since the location of the Italian restaurant was not in a very popular or lively area so I decided to just head to Gangnam for Jongsuk's 89 Mansion Café.

Final stop: Lee Jongsuk's 89 Mansion

Being a new café, there's not a lot of blogs out there that tells you how to get there - and it was quite a walk from Sinsa Station (신사역) - you might want to save the directions on your map for this one beforehand.

Most of the blogs I've found were just about the café itself and how luxurious and pretty it was. Situated in Gangnam, it's obviously pricier than Mouse Rabbit and Haru & OneDay - Jongsuk is really out here charging me ₩16,000 on egg bacon benedict. I wanted to sit down and enjoy the place, so I ordered a lemonade for ₩8,000 and watched the beautiful Korean men work their magic with my lemonade.

I think Jongsuk has a criteria on how his workers want to look like - it's all about the image here in Gangnam, and Jongsuk joined in on the trend.

89 Mansion is divided into two sections - the café is on the first floor and the restaurant is on the second floor. While my lemons were being aded (HA!), I went upstairs to see the restaurant, and I stayed there long enough to take pictures of the words painted by Jongsuk himself and the picturesque red frame to the right of the stairs before being asked to go back to the first floor because I only ordered "café drinks" and not "restaurant foods" - okay Jongsuk.

I am planning to go back there soon to try out the food though, since everything is so beautiful and fits my aesthetic.

I spent a whole half day travelling from café to café that I forgot to eat my lunch, so while on the way back to Sinsa Station (신사역), I stopped by a Vietnamese restaurant called Hanoi Plate.

I have been missing home lately, and the biggest things that are making me homesick are the Mexican and Vietnamese food. I come from an area in Los Angeles that is really famous for the good Mexican and Vietnamese food, and having been eating Chinese, Japanese, and Korean food everyday the past month, I realized how much I actually missed my good food from home.

The Mexican food by Anam-dong don't look appetizing - I feel like they've never even seen Mexican food before.

I saw the words bánh mì written by the name of the restaurant and I sprinted in. Bánh mì is my go-to food back home - there's a Bánh Mì Chè Cali branch right next to my house and I stop by everyday to buy myself a bánh mì sandwich for my school lunch and snack. It's my stress food - so better believe I sprinted into Hanoi Plate the moment I saw those two Vietnamese words.

I didn't realize they specialized in North Vietnamese food, so I wanted to try something new - Bún chả, grilled pork and noodles. The meal was so delicious that it made me miss my local Vietnamese foods back home some more.

K-Star Road Adventures

Since I was already in Gangnam, I decided to just head to the K-Star Road and take pictures of the JYP Entertainment (GOT7, 2PM, TWICE, Stray Kids), Around Us Entertainment (Highlight), and FNC Entertainment (CNBLUE, F.T. Island, SF9, AOA, N.Flying) buildings and see the GangnamDols just down Apgujeong street. There's a map of the area that shows you where the entertainment buildings and specific GangnamDols are located.

JYP Entertainment just moved to a new location four days prior to my visit at the building, although the pictures and notes in the Dunkin' Donuts in front of the old JYP building were still present.

Just next to JYP building was the Around Us Entertainment building, managed by Highlight themselves after refusing to renew their contract as Beast with their former label, Cube Entertainment, and leaving the company back in 2016. Since Cube has copyrighted the group name Beast, they decided to rename themselves Highlight in 2017.

Then I visited FNC Entertainment, which was just behind the Around Us building. Two guys in face masks and caps walked by and groups of girls were waving at them and trying to talk to them, and to this day, I still don't know who they are. Maybe they're trainees? Maybe they're rookies? Maybe they're backup dancers? I will never know.

Facing JYP building to the left is Apgujeong street, which has the GangnamDols lined up leading to the Galleria. GangnamDols are these bear statues dressed up in K-Pop groups' iconic logos and colors. There were seventeen GangnamDols during my visit and I expect it to grow larger throughout the years: they had a GangnamDol for BTS, EXO, SHINee, Super Junior, 4Minute, 2PM, Girls' Generation, CNBLUE, VIXX, miss A, BLOCK B, among others.

I decided to take the long way and walked to Apgujeong Station (압구정역) instead of going back to where I got off at Cheongdam Station (청당역) since I wanted to take the time and appreciate Gangnam at night - the bright lights, the way people in Gangnam interact with each other, and how they dress their dogs. Halfway during my walk, my Kakao Talk notified me of a text from John:

EXCUSE ME, JOHN? WHERE ARE YOU? I DID NOT EVEN KNOW BLACKPINK WAS HOLDING A FAN MEET? SEND ME YOUR LOCATION NOW! It was 8 PM in the posh area of Gangnam where everyone minds how beautifully they look when they walk, but I was running to Apgujeong Station (압구정역) drenching in sweat. It takes about 30 minutes to go from Apgujeong Station (압구정역) to Yeouido Station (여의도역) without counting the wait between transfers. I was looking at arriving about 45-60 minutes after John sending the text of Blackpink arriving at IFC Mall. To make matters worse, I didn't even know where IFC Mall was! I had no idea how much walking I would be doing to reach the mall. I didn't even know where in IFC Mall the event was held at. Welp! At least I'm trying. I had no other plans anyway and I had four hours until the last subway leaves for the night. I reached Yeouido Station (여의도역) at 9:05 PM, almost an hour since John sent the text. There were two towers - IFC Towers 1 and 2. I went in IFC Tower 1 to a crowd of people leaving. I missed it. I missed Blackpink. I walked to the center of a very-quiet-and-empty second floor of the mall and asked one of the massage workers about a Blackpink event.

"It might be over", she broke my heart.

Well, I guess I would just head over to the food court area, have dinner, and call it a night.

I noticed a crowd were gathering at the edges of the open area on the second floor, looking down at the first floor. I was curious to see what they were so fixated on - Blackpink was still doing the fan signing!

Both the stairs and the escalators going down to the first floor were blocked, and by the looks of the crowd downstairs, I had a better view of Blackpink from the second floor - so I stayed and watched the event from above.

Jisoo and Jennie were on the far corner of the table, while Lisa and Rosé were closer to my area, so throughout the night, I tried to get both their attentions.

Lisa heard me multiple times but could not locate where the voice was coming from. She would look up side to side and wave at the area where she thought the voice was coming from, but no.

After the fan signing, they were asked to sign four Blackpink sweatshirts to give away as a raffle for the people sitting down in the area.

I stayed there until 9:45 PM when they left. It was my last chance to get their attention, so I kept calling for Lisa's name.

She looked around and gave the "where is that voice coming from?" look and hand motion. Rosé located me though, and looked up to smile at me.

No luck with Lisa.

Jennie and Jisoo followed Lisa and Rosé exit the stage, and no luck with the other two members.

I guess my night ended well. I took the subway back to Anam Station (안암역) and got myself chocolate sundae and fries at McDonald's.

I should keep doing K-Pop activities if nights like this happen, I guess? Until then!

COVID-19 & The Coffee Trade: Exploring The Short- & Long-Term Impact

Containers, cash flow, and congestion: COVID-19 is causing unprecedented chaos in the coffee industry.

While coffee shops and roasters are shutting shop or looking for innovative ways to remain profitable, traders and producers are faced with a different kind of problem: how to keep the coffee industry running so that next year’s coffees make it to the café and supermarket – and a year’s worth of income isn’t lost.

The yearly harvest dates and global nature of the supply chain pose particular challenges for the upstream sector of the coffee industry. I spoke with importers, exporters, and producers tied to Brazil and Colombia to get a snapshot of how COVID-19 is affecting their businesses as of May 2020.

Coffee Demand Is Shrinking

For years, economists have been warning us that global coffee demand is growing. And now, suddenly, people aren’t buying coffee.

Cafés and restaurants around the world have closed their doors, some permanently. Ricardo Pereira, COO of green coffee importer Ally Coffee, has felt the impact first hand. In Europe, he noticed that “There was a stop. Nobody was buying, nobody was doing anything.”

However, demand is likely to increase as strict lockdown periods end. Many countries in Europe are already relaxing restrictions, with even the hard-hit countries of Spain and Italy letting coffee shops re-open from mid-May. In the US, Starbucks plans to open 90% of its branches by early June.

Ricardo is cautiously optimistic. “In the last two weeks, we have seen a little bit more movement, especially in Scandinavia and Germany,” he says. “We are seeing our [European] clients coming back a little bit to somewhat more their normal routine.”

It will take a while for demand to reach pre-pandemic levels. Even as coffee shops and restaurants begin to open, many are forced to limit the number of customers they serve at a time. Low public confidence and health concerns could also result in fewer people choosing to visit cafés. “Consumption is going to be down, for sure. That’s [a] certainty,” Ricardo tells me. 

The ICO recently forecast that a one percent decrease in GDP growth could be associated with a 0.95 percent lower growth in coffee consumption, which adds up to 1.6 million 60-kilo bags.  “That’s something huge,” says Ricardo.

Yet if demand only drops by 1.6 million 60-kilo bags, we will be lucky. The International Monetary Fund has predicted that global GDP will, in fact, fall by 3% – and in advanced economies, such as the US, Europe, and Japan, 6.1%.

Coffee Consumption Habits Change

As offices and schools close, more employees are working from home in a movement that could continue into the post-pandemic world. Facebook and Google have already announced that remote working will be in place for most employees until the end of 2020.

This may boost at-home consumption, reversing recent trends. According to NCA’s 2019 National Coffee Data Trends report into the US market, 22% of people who had drunk coffee in the last day hadn’t prepared it at home – an increase from 2012, when the figure stood at just 16%.

However, with fewer people commuting or eating out, consumption in hotels, restaurants, and cafés is set to shrink, along with a reduced office coffee market. 

Ricardo tells me, “Some of our clients, they have grown up to 10 times their e-commerce. Their sales to supermarkets have gone up… Some of the roasters are going to realise this is a stream of revenue that they were not tapping perhaps fully before the pandemic.”

It is unlikely that this will offset the decline in volume, however, and could result in reduced per-cup profits for café-roasteries. 

Meanwhile, some coffee producers are realising that the end-product is changing and so are their buyers’ wants. “We are working hard to understand the needs of the roasters and adapt our offers and coffees to those new interests,” says Vicente Mejia, Founder and Managing Director of specialty Colombian exporter Clearpath Coffee. 

Fourth-generation coffee farmer Rodrigo Sanchez Valencia of Finca Monteblanco, Colombia believes that communication is key. “We have started to talk to [our buyers] a lot, taking into account the market and trying to design coffees that can be tailored to the needs of customers who work from home,” he tells me.

Cash Flow Shortages Impact Trading Partners

When demand dropped, many roasters watched their cash reserves shrinking with grave concern. In this crisis, they rushed to shore up their working capital positions. 

“We started getting a lot of phone calls,” says Ricardo, explaining that roasters were hoping their importers could offer them more flexible payment terms. This, however, placed the financial burden on the importer – and in turn, the exporter and even the coffee producer. 

Many businesses were in the delicate situation of having to limit flexible payment options to protect their own finances. “We do our best to be able to provide some relief to [our customers],” says Ricardo, “but we also have to follow some guidelines and some protocols presented to us by our lenders as well.”

Many coffee producers and exporters are struggling as their green contracts are cancelled by importers and roasters. Because importers must honor their contracts with exporters and producers, they have limited flexibility in the payment options they can extend to roasters. But by honoring those contracts at origin, importers help coffee shipments move as quickly as possible. In some cases, Ricardo says, “we were encouraging them to get coffees prepared for export faster” so producers would receive payments sooner and there was less risk of coffee being stuck in ports. 

Governments around the world have put schemes in place to help businesses. However, the degree of support available varies greatly and information can be hard to uncover. Ally Coffee has compiled a list of resources and schemes that could provide economic relief for US roasters in different states.

Currency Fluctuations Affect Prices Producers Receive

As investors across the world rushed to buy safe-haven assets such as US Treasury notes, the US dollar appreciated dramatically. This helped shake up a decades-long trend of low coffee prices in Colombia.

“The internal price rose almost 30% in two months,” says Vicente Mejia. Many exporters in Colombia, such as Clearpath, were caught off-guard by this dramatic price swing. “We had to pay more for the coffee, so our budget and cash flow projections didn’t work as planned and we had to find extra cash very fast.”

Meanwhile, the increase in prices has been a welcome relief for many Colombian farmers who sell their coffee through the government’s coffee buying programme run by the FNC. 

As for farm workers, stockpiling food has led to a cash squeeze. “Many of us went to the grocery store to stock up on food for the next few months,” explains Leonardo Montesanto Tavares, CEO of Montesanto Tavares Group Farms, a company that runs coffee farms in Brazil. 

As coffee farm workers spent more on non-perishable food, their household savings began to disappear. “For workers that receive a base salary, this can put them in a delicate situation,” says Leonardo. 

In Brazil, employees typically receive twice their usual monthly payment in December. Grupo Montesanto Tavares brought this forward to support workers in these unprecedented times.

Labour Shortages Disrupt The Harvest

Social distancing protocols have made coffee picking more logistically challenging and expensive than normal. 

The pandemic began escalating just as Colombian coffee farms were readying themselves for harvest, a time when the farms would normally be filled with seasonal labourers picking cherries by hand. 

“We’ve changed our sanitation methods,” says Rodrigo Sanchez Valencia, who tells me that they sanitise hands and boots on entry and try to ensure social distancing. “We are more careful about how coffee pickers are distributed within our farms. We try to ensure they’re not physically close to one another.”

What this means for the size of Colombia’s current harvest is yet to be determined, but it will likely increase per-bag harvesting costs. 

In Guatemala, meanwhile, the virus hit at the tail-end of the harvest. “I spoke with some of our partners [in Guatemala] and they were having a hard time finding labour to finish the harvest,” says Ricardo. 

For many Central and South American specialty coffee producers facing cancelled contracts and labour shortages, commodity-grade coffee might become more attractive. It is hard to justify investments in farm maintenance and quality when there are cash flow shortages, but producers can nearly always sell lower-quality coffee on the internal market – especially when stockpiling is leading to increasing demand.

“Farmers get relaxed with quality,” says Vicente. “They no longer need to make an extra effort to have great quality coffee and sell it as specialty to make a profit.” This has the potential to set back the development of the specialty coffee growing sector in the coming years. 

In Brazil, where the harvest is just beginning, the impact may not be as severe thanks to the country’s terrain and its history of mechanical coffee-picking. “To avoid large groups of pickers, and thinking on the wellbeing of our workers, we decided to use only mechanised harvesters,” Leonardo Montesanto Tavares tells me.

Milling & Transportation Is Bottlenecked

Coffees are currently arriving at Colombian mills where, due to social distancing and shorter working hours, capacity is reduced. As the mills operate slower and less efficiently, the cost of processing coffee rises. 

COVID-19 is also causing increased transportation costs in Colombia. “Are they going to have enough truckers coming in and moving coffee from point A to point B, or moving coffee from mill to warehouse to port?” asks Ricardo. 

He adds that Colombian restaurants along the highways are closed, “so they need to feed the drivers in order for them to continue to drive the product from farm to mill and mill to port”.

Traders are also worried about container shortages. Ricardo tells me that he’s been receiving phone calls from worried partners, telling him “I don’t think we have containers to ship”.

As worldwide exports slow on the back of a sluggish economy and some Chinese cities impose fortnight-long quarantines on containers, coffee exporters might have to contend with longer shipping delays and increasing freight prices.

However, Leonardo tells me that Brazil is, for the time being, avoiding these challenges. “We export around 500 to 600 containers every month, and fortunately, we work closely with our exporting companies, and our trucks are operating as normal as before the pandemic and we aren’t experiencing any delays from farm to the port.”

With demand and supply fluctuating and businesses closing shop, warehouse space could soon become another issue. “Major coffee roasting companies are slowing down and losing a lot of their business, and therefore not moving as much coffee from the warehouses to their facilities,” says Ricardo.

If roasters are unable to accept their shipments, they could end up stuck in the importers’ facilities, at warehousing facilities, at port, or even in the origin country.

As a result of these challenges, this pandemic may soon adversely affect the variety, price, and freshness of the coffee that roasters can offer their customers.

A Post-Pandemic Coffee Industry

COVID-19 started just as a health crisis, but the economic implications are increasingly evident. Actors along the coffee supply chain are supporting one another where possible to avoid bottlenecks, congestion, and financial losses.

In the coming months, we might see a reduced amount of specialty coffees, fewer specialty roasters, and a permanent shift in how coffee is consumed as a result of this crisis. Decreased demand caused by a global recession could hit producers and traders hard.

But, as dire as the situation is today, many are hopeful that we will soon see an upturn. Vicente Mejia tells me, “Coffee enthusiasts will always want those unique and top-notch coffees, and we’re going to keep focusing on providing some of those niche offerings for that kind of client.”

And, as Ricardo says, “We’re social beings. We want to be interacting with people, relating to people, going to coffee shops and going to restaurants, going to travel, visiting another country, or going and staying in a hotel.”
