Tav questions 3, 7, 13, 24, please and thank you!
13 and 24 were answered here and here, respectively, so I've slid ahead to 17 and 25, the next unanswereds!
3. Did your Tav receive any formal or informal education? If yes, how well did they learn? If no, why not?
She received an excellent formal education until her parents died. She was always a little hard to wrangle into the books - she'd much rather be with her friends - but she was reasonably capable and they wanted her to learn. After they died and she killed her aunt, she learned the rules of the street very quickly.
Tangentially, part of the reason she's a slow reader is that I think she lets her mind wander constantly; she's literate, but distractable, and she'll skip paragraphs at a time and wonder why something doesn't make sense. This is part of why the Headband of Intellect is literally life-changing for her; so many previously alien connections and inferences become suddenly effortless for her, and even when she would benefit more from other items she never takes it off. She's not dumb without it, but so many logical leaps become so much easier with it on, and she deeply enjoys that facility of intuition.
7. What circumstances led to your Tav becoming their Class/Subclass?
For the record, Tavish is a Rogue Thief with the Criminal background. When her parents died, her mother's sister took her in. They lived in her childhood home for a few months, then sold it and moved back to the aunt's house in the slums. The aunt was very bitter about having to take in this sad child, so she roped her into her cons and schemes, swindling the softhearted of the city whenever possible. Sometimes Tav was the face of the con, pleading sadly for help; sometimes she was the hands (she feels VERY protective over Silfy), though she was never as good as her aunt wanted her to be. This is when the aunt sold off most of Tavish's family's belongings and wasted the rest of her inheritance on liquor and [insert moderately ruinous Faerunian drug here].
When she was fourteen, her aunt came at her in a drunken rage, and Tav shivved her with a kitchen knife. She hid the body and lived in the shack as long as she could until taxes came due, around six months, and then when they repossessed the house she fled to the streets. This is where she picked up her survival skills and decent Charisma, though she'd prefer to avoid detection in the first place. She had a small group of similarly aged children she ran with here, mostly other orphans and refugees. No burglary work if she could help it either - strict pickpocketing and occasional begging - but she wasn't good enough to get into the Guild and as her friends improved one by one, she was left behind.
17. How good of a liar is your Tav? How do they feel about lying?
She's a good liar, though her persuasion is better. She doesn't have any compunction about lying as a concept, though as the game goes on, the lies she tells for strictly selfish reasons twinge more and more on her conscience, especially against innocents. She'd rather be honest and just persuade you to give away your belongings than deceive you into it; in her experience, people tend to be a lot less willing to employ the Fist to chase her down for the former.
25. How does your Tav feel about what others think of them?
Initially, she only cares as an academic exercise in getting what she needs; people are more likely to be nice to her if they like her, so she does what she can to be liked. Later, especially with Wyll and Karlach, she finds herself desperate for their approval (they're so Effortlessly Good and it's been a long time since she's been around anyone like that), so she engages in a lot of performative altruism to make sure they like her. She's surprised herself when she starts really caring about the gratitude from the people she helps in the process.
Post-game, unless it's Astarion or one of her friends, she doesn't care at all what people think. The pendulum actually swings too far in this direction for a while, with her almost deliberately shutting out anyone not in her "circle;" it's not until Karlach gives her (and Astarion) a good talking-to about making other, normal friends like Fitz that she goes to a bit more of an effort to genuinely connect with others. I'm not sure how many friends he ends up with outside their group, but she does develop some, and she makes sure to put effort into those relationships over the years. (This includes one of her childhood friends, a girl named Juniper, who grew up to become Lady Ague in Ninefingers's Court.) It's a much healthier dynamic than what she's used to, honestly, and in a lot of ways it's a positive influence on everyone. Thanks, Karlach! :D

Let's go with a series. I was looking through Ao3, and I had forgotten how little engagement I actually had with my Blackwall/Bethroot fics. Only one has cracked a 100 kudos. I get way. Blackwall is not a popular romance and of all the Inquisitor choices, dwarves are the least popular. But I love them and I think some of my strongest writing is in those fics, so I would love to see more eyes on them!
🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing
I have a good sense of pacing, especially when it comes to longer, multi-chaptered fics. I'm able to leave out what's not relevant, and leave that to the reader's imagination!
💞what’s the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language
It's the characters, no doubt. For certain pairings, I could write them in a hundred different settings and not get bored. Figuring out what makes characters tick and then showing that on the page? *chef's kiss* That's the good stuff!

Yeah, kinda! Or they might have seen a lot of films, but only films that are… two or three or four layers removed from the thing they’re making. Like if someone wanted to craft a 70’s-style political conspiracy thriller, but their only personal reference point for that entire genre was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, y’know what I mean? It’s like trying to make out details through cheese cloth.
The places in the grand tapestry of Goncharov where folks try to subvert a trope in the genre (by saying Goncharov subverts that trope) don’t really feel authentic because they don’t have knowledge of the rules they’re trying to break. Subversions are responses to things, but they didn’t hear the thing they’re responding to so it feels kind of flat and hollow. (But the thing is that I’m talking about a fake movie that doesn’t exist, so this whole thing is already an impressive and noble creative endeavor, don’t get me wrong!)
Maybe it’s simpler than that. Maybe it’s that there’s so much love for Goncharov right now, and I feel like when it’s over that love isn’t gonna be passed on to the creations that have indirectly inspired the people “making” Goncharov right now. Maybe that’s what bums me out.
Or maybe I just want people to watch cool movies. I have a history of wanting that.

gay pirates / Star Wars crossover: what would you envision?
Stede is Canto Bight rich, that I know for certain.
I think it would be really interesting to explore queerness as not just a gender but also (alien) race thing? We know there's a lot of anti-alien sentiment in the universe (which the Empire/First Order recognizes, exploits, and weaponizes), and of course the same kinds of economic marginalization. There's a lot of room to examine dynamics around interracial solidarity, human superiority (and why a construction of queerness in this universe has to take aliens into account), and the chewy political stuff we only got a glimpse of in Rogue One.
Ed is a Chiss, because that would be hot. Lucius is a Twi'lek. Jim is Dathomiran (Asajj Ventress's race). I think it would be hilarious to make Buttons a Wookiee, and Karl is like one of those little mouse droids.
Izzy is the meanest, crabbiest Sullustan in the whole damn galaxy.

Favorite books I read in 2023
I saw @asaara-writes missing my book posts, and looked back through my tags, and indeed I haven't done any in a while.
Also I seem to have kind of gotten out of the habit of posting on tumblr at all? I'm not sure what's up with that, I am definitely here pretty much every day!
It looks like I talked about books in some meme responses at Christmas, so let's go with:
THINGS CLIO READ: 2023 EDITION
Here are brief notes on things I read and enjoyed (not a complete list of things I have read this year):
Fonda Lee, Jade Legacy: Sequel to Jade City and Jade War and concludes the trilogy, and what a conclusion! The world and timeframe of the series just keeps expanding and delivers character arcs and an ending I found immensely satisfying.
T. Kingfisher, Illuminations: The author in young-adult mode, featuring a family who create magic through painted images. When a long-hidden family secret gets out, it could mess up everything, unless they can put their heads together and figure out a solution. Charmingly quirky and lovable characters, highly enjoyable.
Max Gladstone, Dead Country: I am totally here for more Craft Sequence always. This book takes our original heroine Tara Abernathy home again, older and more experienced. Really interesting to return to her close first-person perspective after several multi-perspective books, and very cool to see her now in a mentoring role.
Fonda Lee, The Jade Setter of Janloon: Novella set in the Green Bone universe, this gives us a great look at the world from the point of view of someone on the edges of the Green Bones' conflicts.
Kate Elliott, Furious Heaven: The second volume of her "gender-flipped Alexander the Great in space" series. I feel like I never see anyone talking about this, and I think she's doing great things with the characters and a sprawling space opera setting. This book left me really curious how far she's going to follow Alexander's historical career.
R. F. Kuang, Babel: This book is incredible. Magic here revolves around translation, and so a young Chinese boy is adopted by a British scholar and raised to be fluently bilingual; eventually he is sent to the great translation center in 19th-century Oxford. Here he and his peers, however, find themselves at the core engine of British imperialism, with all the ethical dilemmas that come with it. The book really captures the joy and camaraderie that can come through scholarship, but also has very sharp things to say about imperialism and exploitation. Intensely emotional, I'm happy to provide warnings/spoilers if desired.
Ann Leckie, Translation State: A much lighter take on translation, this is set in the Imperial Radch universe and, to my delight, explores what's up with the incredibly weird Presger translators. I don't really want to give anything more away; this was a really fun ride.
Arkady Martine, Rose/House: Super creepy novella involving a famous architect's AI-controlled house. Tons of mood and atmosphere.
Katherine Addison, The Witness for the Dead and The Grief of Stones: Two books picking up one of the side characters from The Goblin Emperor (which is also wonderful) and following his new routine. Thara Celehar's ability to touch a dead person and see their memories puts him in a role of problem-solver and sometime-investigator. These books are wonderfully humane and surround the protagonist with an array of compelling friends, colleagues, and clients.
All of these are recommended!

fic stat game
Rules: Give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the least words.
I saw all of the posts about the same time, so I'll consider myself tagged by @loquaciousquark , @servantofclio, and @thievinghippo
Following their lead, consider yourself tagged if you read this!
Most hits - Ugly Like a Turian It's (very light) hurt/comfort smut. Of course it's fandom's favorite.
Second most kudos - The Perks of Working Late My first explicit Mass Effect story! I'm so grateful for the original response it got on the kinkmeme. It encouraged me to no end and got me writing more in this fandom.
Third most comments - When I fall asleep it is your eyes that close My one and only soulbond fic! I've started writing the third chapter so many times. I know the part of the problem is that it's a bridge chapter and I really want to be writing what comes next instead. I'm gonna figure it out someday!
Fourth most bookmarks - Krogan Sympathy Has my favorite fade to black and my attempt at realistically addressing the issues of Shepard & Garrus starting a family and the fandom joke that they'll just adopt one of the new baby krogan. I was pleasantly surprised at how this resonated with readers.
Fifth most words - Saudade Written for a Dragon Age reverse mini-bang. I love the Hawke siblings, and indulge myself whenever I can. In this one, it's Carver's time to shine.
fic with the least words - Sign Language I've got three Naruto exactly-100-word drabbles that tie for this. I still love the Temari one the best, so I'll link that one.

In early 2020, @mystery-moose decided my cinematic education could no longer be allowed to persist with such egregious holes. He and I and @eponymous-rose and @silksieve and @fistfulofgammarays started a discord server to watch movies every Saturday night, and shortly after came @probablylostrightnow and @servantofclio and @jadesabre301 and @annalyia and @bettydice, and suddenly we had something like bottled lightning held in a jar in our hands.
It couldn't have come at a better time--the pandemic struck about a month later--and what started as a way to expand my our horizons has become a precious thing. We've watched movies together, celebrated birthdays together, and we've traveled together too, to Colorado and Chicago and the Grand Canyon and a half-dozen other little gatherings across the entire country.
It's not an easy thing for a bunch of 30-40+'s to get together every week. But we make the time, rain or shine, only missing one single week where all but one of us were traveling, and the joy it's brought me (along with the knowledge of the greatest movie of all time, Kung Fu Hustle) is comparable to nothing else. Today is our slightly delayed three-year anniversary celebration.
Happy movie night anniversary, ya pineapples!

TESTING OUT THE QUOTE REPLY THINGY? Very long after the post that inspired said replies, but what-the-fuck-ever:
@theladyw replied to your post “I have 314 things in my q  it is dumb how happy...”:
Pi
🥧! I have turned into a failure of a nerd, I didn’t even notice that, I’m just still thrilled I can go over 300 now, after getting into some very bad drafting habits from getting stuck at 299 a few too many times 🤣
@oranges8hands replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
#6 could be fun but true vote is mermay fic (assuming this is referring to the malec fic - or even better the follow-up to the AU mermay fic cause that thing lives in my head rent free) or sh wip - like another chapter of "if broken hearts were whole" or if you were still doing a sequel to "with an if in its soul".
I mean. IN THEORY ALL THOSE THINGS WILL HAPPEN SOME DAY?
I don’t usually actually totally abandon the WIPs. I have only done so twice in a dozen years? That’s not bad odds, tbqh. Now, has it been longer than usual without managing forward progress on quite so many of them? Perhaps....
*sighs forever*
@jadesabre301 replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
considering I just wrote a nearly 6K summary of a fic I'm not going to write, I'm a big fan of the not!fic collection idea.  But also you should probably work on the thing where snippets are due soon.
Not!Fic is fun! (I have like 10k of journal entries for Ella Shepard that aren’t fic but are good background references, yk?)
& I did not do the thing, and continue to be snippet-less past the deadline. No art for jilly. (But a belated thank you for the pragmatic advice? 😅😅😅😅)
@leahazel replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
I should do a poll like this but for all the unfinished scenes in one WIP.
On the one hand, YES! otoh, my polls have not actually been helping me do anything lately, so uh? YMMV?!?! *snerk*
@servantofclio replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
I admit Downworld for Dummies sounds hilarious to me
I mean. I find it hilarious, that’s why I started writing it? But then it needed more effort and I went *thbbbbbbbt* because my brain is mushy.
@thedivinemissema replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
4 sounds good to me!
WELL IT SOUNDS GOOD TO ME TOO BUT I KEEP NOT WRITING IT?
I should yell about it on a 7kpp server or something, see if that helps me get back into it 🤞🤞🤞 (I just realized  I don’t think we share any discord servers, wtf? How did that happen? Or not happen. Also I have too many that I never check in on, I should do some pruning.)

Some multiplayer adventures tonight with @servantofclio and @probablylostrightnow. I've discovered my deep gnome is a bit of a pyromaniac. Clio's halfing is a retired rogue who failed her first chance to impress us when she couldn't get a crate unlocked. And Tera is really good at hitting things with her fists (and looking badass while she does)
Next time, we'll bring Lae'zel out a bit, see if we can't get her to warm up to the group!

Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it. Tag as many people as wips.
Oh, boy... I used to be more creative about these, but not anymore. I've got a few I'm working on right now and far more in the vault that may never be finished again, but considering my current fixation I'm going to go with the most recent stuff I've touched!
SxF -- honeymoon
SxF -- alternate meeting
SxF -- outsider
SxF -- Loid
SxF -- Yor
BG3 -- indulgence
and finally, the very mysterious:
47
All of these have at least something written for them, and I've got stuff to talk about with all of them! Writing again! It's fun!!
Tagging @eponymous-rose, @fistfulofgammarays, @servantofclio, @perahn, and anyone else I know who may be writing lately (gosh I am so out of the loop I'm sorry)

book ask, #3, 4, 10, 17, & 24 please and thank you!
Ooh, thank YOU for asking!
3: What were your top five books of the year?
Fonda Lee, Jade Legacy
R. F. Kuang, Babel
Ann Leckie, Translation State
Max Gladstone, Dead Country
Arkady Martine, Rose/House
4: Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Hmm... I don't think I'd read R. F. Kuang before, but I knew her reputation, so... sort of? I didn't so much have a feeling of discovery as much as "ah yes, I expected this to be excellent and agonizing and it was!"
10: What was your favorite new release of the year?
I read Martha Wells' System Collapse almost as soon as it appeared.
17: Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
I honestly can't sing the praises of Jade Legacy enough. It's the conclusion of a trilogy, and I really enjoyed the first two books, but the third one covered so much ground and was such a satisfying conclusion to the saga that I'm still really impressed.
24: Did you DNF anything? Why?
I am partway through Ruthanna Emrys' A Half-Built Garden. I do intend to finish, but I keep getting distracted or can't totally get stuck into it. I have no real idea why.
