sometimes I just have to stop and reflect on the fact that of all lyrics for Taylor to sing in yntcd, she chose “shade never made anybody less gay.” In the context of the verse and the song at large, Taylor has primarily presented the song to be one of addressing homophobia and hatred aimed at toward the lgbtq community and pitting women against each other and whatnot and of course that’s a great message to share
but I would argue that these lyrics hold a lot more significance than simply saying homophobia doesn’t make someone gay. bc tbh I understand what message she’s trying to deliver with that line but the correlation itself? gives me pause
instead, I believe Taylor’s intended meaning of the lyric, one that makes much more sense, is that being closeted (or shade) never made anybody less gay. a lyric like that strikes an important message in that you don’t need to be out to be valid or a member of the queer community. that very circumstance is one that Taylor regularly recognizes in her pride speeches. she’s also frequently referencing closet motifs. I almost wonder if Taylor started with a lyric like this and then masked it in the alternative meaning of shade, in a song about not hating others. she may have felt that would be an appropriate approach that an ally might take and ran with it
took my baby sister to see the eras tour in theaters this weekend and was so jumpscared when she played you need to calm down almost immediately bc that song is of course now forever entwined with the beauteous and perfect percival pickens you need to calm down amv that for the next three hours i was just haunted by percival pickens i cannot lie
'Told two people I'm aro this week. I got served the "You haven't met the right person" housebrand and the "I wish I was like you, heartbreaks hurt" envy card. And today, for good measure, got a touch of "I thought you don't find people attractive" when talking about conventional attractiveness.
