It's heartbreaking that Robby blames himself for Johnny abandoning him. He was an unwanted child whose father abandoned him the day he was born and continued to do so afterward. Whose mother also got fed up of him/gave up on him.
He lives with this belief that no one loves him or wants him because he is a bad and unlovable child. That he is the problem. And no one makes an effort to dispel this belief of his. It only gets reaffirmed further with another parental figure, Daniel, also abandoning him.
And yet, his biggest most defining trait — to the point it is his weakness — is kindness. He wants to help people and be there for them because no one was there for him.

This man is gay 🏳️‍🌈
During his teen years he had a lot of internalised homophobia due to Sid and Kreese. They influenced him a lot when he was younger.
He dated Ali because his friends were there at the time they started dating and he felt pressured. Ali found out pretty quickly and agreed to stay with him for a bit because she knew it was something he was struggling with.
He didn’t want to accept it at first and it lead to him trying to act too macho which lead to him acting like a dick and Ali eventually broke up with him. She didn’t say anything about him being gay but was still upset about the way he treated her because she thought he was her friend.
Bobby definitely knew about his sexuality but didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to scare him.
The big struggle started the day he met Daniel LaRusso.
He took one look into those brown doe eyes and was instantly gone for him. This angered him and he went into denial because he was also scared of Kreese finding out and hurting him. His anger and fear lead to him acting the way he did. His major feelings for Daniel confused him and he tried to convince himself he was jealous because Daniel started dating his ex-girlfriend.
He became a little obsessed with Daniel.
To be fair all of Cobra Kai we’re obsessed with Daniel.
He felt so angry at Halloween but also really guilty and pissed off at himself too when he later went home.
He still wasn’t able to admit it until he got much older and by then he had already had a relationship with Shannon and they’d had Robby.
He’s always felt something for Daniel and seeing him again ignited it.
Miguel often explains modern lgbt terms to him and can probably tell that Johnny has it bad for Daniel but doesn’t want to push it.
I think becoming a mentor to so many kids in the lgbt community and becoming proper friends with Daniel helped him come to terms with his sexuality. It was a journey but once he realised that Kreese was toxic and he needed to drop him he was able to heal and eventually his internalised homophobia started to fade. He was able to become more comfortable with himself.
Johnny still doesn’t know anything about queer people despite being one himself but he’s trying.
He’s shocked when he finds out that Daniel is bisexual and even more shocked when Daniel reveals that even back in high school when they hated each other he found Johnny attractive.
Once they start getting cool with each other they definitely start dating (Amanda and Daniel divorced but are still besties). Both of them still have a rivalry but it has more blatant flirting and sometimes their bickering ends in them making out.
They literally talk about each other all the time.
Johnny finally comes out about being gay and his relationship with Daniel after spending the day with Ali.
He considers Sam and Anthony his kids too after a while (he still finds Anthony annoying but finds the kid is growing on him).
To celebrate him coming out the kids get him a pride flag headband (I don’t know what it’s called lmao the thing Daniel wears) and he acts like it’s stupid but they can tell he’s a little touched. He doesn’t wear it but he keeps it in a special place.
He went to his first pride parade with some of the kids and Daniel to see what it’s like.
He gets a little giddy when he gets to refer to Daniel as his boyfriend. He once got drunk and started telling everyone that he has “the hottest boyfriend ever” and claiming that his boyfriend is better than anyone else’s. Daniel was mortified and kept apologising to everyone as he followed him but was really pleased at the same time.
They’re both referred to as the Karate Boyfriends by the kids.

talk shop tuesday - you once mentioned the 'Robby Lawrence' AU and I would love love love to know more about that, and how Johnny having been present in Robby's life would change things in this 'verse (beyond Robby getting some decent parental figures in his life for once).
Oooh there’s a deep cut 😅 last time I talked about that was a couple years back! Here’s the initial post about it if anyone’s curious.
This is also a bit longer than I expected (even tho I only hit some of the highlights 😅) so the rest is below the cut:
So Johnny being more present in Robby's life would also probably improve things with Shannon, because really, I think a lot of Robby's issues with Shannon had to do with the fact that she was trying her level best but she wasn't prepared to be a single mom. She was relying on Johnny to help parent Robby, and of course that never happened in canon—Johnny kept letting her down. But with Johnny more present, I think the two of them would be on better terms with each other and with Robby! They wouldn't be together as a couple, but they're co-parents and friends, and they love Robby, and Robby loves them. So from the jump, there's a more stable relationship.
Also, I mentioned he meets Sam in elementary school* and they strike up a friendship. A one-sided, Shirbert-esque academic rivalry at first (serious from Sam's end, not so much from Robby's end), but then it becomes more playful over time. As a result, Robby also has Daniel and Amanda as...maybe or maybe not parental figures, but definitely trusted adults. Especially Amanda—I love how much those two just get each other, and of course I gotta keep it in this AU idea.
Robby gets pulled into the Miyagi-Do stuff much earlier—Johnny's wary about it, but he and Daniel have resolved their differences by now (especially since Shannon and Amanda are best friends and keep glaring at them whenever they start fighting, so they've been lovingly bullied into reconciling), so Johnny trusts Daniel with Robby. And he sees Robby flourish—he was always a fairly happy kid since meeting Sam, but with karate in particular, it's like a sort of calmness follows him everywhere. Johnny even sits in on a few of Robby's classes, claiming it's to "keep an eye on them", but everyone knows it's because Johnny's kinda warming up to the idea of this more meditative style of karate. (It helps him too. He and Robby practice sparring, and they develop an in-between style of CK and MD together.)
Obviously Robby would be friends with Sam's friends too...well, at least Aisha, Demetri, and Eli**. Yasmine and Moon would rub him the wrong way, and he and Sam would argue a lot about it. Aisha, Demetri, and Eli cut ties with her, and Robby does too, telling Sam, "the girl I knew, who kept trying to befriend the loner new kid and didn't stop until it worked, would never side with the girl bullying her best friend. Come talk to me when you've gotten your head on straight." (Though of course, Robby jumps to her defense when the Kyler rumors pop up, frowning at Aisha when she says something snide. Miguel attacks Kyler before Robby can, and for that, Robby can admit the new kid is pretty cool.)
And he and Anthony would have kind of a...not a brotherly relationship at first, but a tentative respect relationship, that sort of evolves into a brotherly one over the years (when Anthony starts bullying Kenny, Robby's the one who drags him away by the ear and demands to know "what the hell do you think you're doing, Anthony LaRusso" and nips that rivalry in the bud, thank you very much)
Hmm what else...oh! Johnny opens Cobra Kai at the start of canon, Daniel gets pissed about it, but not as pissed as canon—remember, he knows Johnny here. So instead of doing something underhanded, he calls Johnny and demands to know what he thinks he's doing. Reminds him what Kreese did. Johnny snaps back that he doesn't need a reminder, and that it's a free country, he can do what he wants. Daniel has never spoken about KK3, but Johnny's always suspected there was something else, something about '85 that Daniel's not mentioning. He pries a little, but Daniel gets defensive. Tells him to be careful and hangs up. So that part's just slightly changed—it just means no underhanded tricks, more communication for them.
Oh and ofc regarding the romances, there wouldn't be any love triangle nonsense. Miguel would be jealous of Robby from way earlier (because remember, Robby jumped to Sam's verbal defense first), but Robby would say "no, dude, she's like a sister/best friend to me. Ask her out if you want. But...if my dad tries to give you advice, maybe take it with a grain of salt." (Miguel takes her to golf 'n stuff anyway, and Robby figures that's for the best. Casual is better for a first date). And of course with no jealousy nonsense, Miguel and Sam don't break up, so there's no Sam/Robby and Miguel/Tory in s2.
And, actually, Robby and Aisha are both the first to befriend Tory. Now, of course, Robby and Aisha both feel similarly about Sam—they both cut ties with her at the same time and both made amends with her at the same time. But also, Robby's always been the type to defuse the tension (this is a canon trait of his, which would likely carry over more here due to Daniel, Amanda, and Shannon's collective influences). So when Sam starts making accusations and Tory starts getting heated, Robby steps between them, tells them both to calm down, and tells Sam to explain what's going on. So she does, and Robby ropes Tory and Aisha into helping Sam (doesn't take too much convincing for the latter—remember, Aisha forgave Sam in 1x10). They find Amanda's wallet, all is well...and Sam apologizes for making assumptions. Tory's not sure what to make of her, so she just nods (as a result of this, they become friends much earlier).
There's probably more that would change, but these are the big things I can think of 😅 I...did not expect to get hooked on this idea again, but I so am. Thanks for the ask!
*Sam's an Encino kid, but she goes to public school, as Robby probably would too. So that's where they meet.
**Demetri, Eli, Aisha, and Sam all being childhood best friends is a long-standing headcanon of mine, so ofc it would be present here

WILD CARD
@allvalley100
Her whole life, people have been telling her she’s a wild card.
Her parents, her teachers, her various flings.
That blond pretty boy that she, unfortunately, fell head over heels with.
When her doctor confirmed what she had been dreading for weeks, Shannon felt his judgmental gaze upon her.
You’re pregnant, Miss Keene.
So, when she’s watching Robby lifting his trophy at the Sekai Taikai, all of their friends and family forming a tight circle around him, cheering and laughing and clapping, her heart swells with pride and joy.
Wild card or not, she raised that boy all by herself.

if susan had been in cobra kai she would have barged in while everyone was faux-congratulated johnny on his fixit baby and read them all to filth, then she would have put carmen in her subaru and driven her to the abortion clinic and soon after carmen would have joined her and ali and mysteriously shannon in a little polycule because everyone johnny has ever dated needs to date susan instead, here’s how the lesbians can still win-

There is something about this moment that really gets me. I think it's bc it was in this scene where we truly started to get to know Robby as something beyond Johnny's son. Prior to this, all of Robby's scenes were him either being angry at Johnny or getting into some kind of trouble. This scene is the first time we see him vulnerable as a kid who's clearly not being treated properly by either of his parents. This moment in particular where he sort of leans in to Shannon's embrace and then his sad quiet "love you too" after she had already gone really got to me from the very first time. And watching it again after watching the whole series has only made it even more painful. It really kills me that all he has ever wanted is love and attention from his parents yet those things are constantly denied to him

Always ready to defend Shannon Keene. I mean like textually yeah she’s not a good mom, at least when she’s using (she seems pretty chill once she’s sober, granted they hardly let us fucking see her after season 3) but also Johnny isn’t a good dad either and lots of people love him (often including me) sooo. And honestly. Comparatively Shannon has actually done way more to improve as a parent? And granted I guess it’s not Johnny’s fault that the writers refuse to let him develop! But getting sober— and staying sober— it’s easy to dismiss, I think, especially if you’re going “well the least someone could do to be a good mom is not be high all the time” or w/e. But in reality it’s. Huge. Big in a way that’s almost too tender, too painful to fully look at. In comparison Johnny’s attempts at finally getting his shit together enough to actually be a dad look… pretty pathetic. Especially when he’s about to have another kid and yet still regularly drinks and drives.
And it’s no secret people tend to see being a bad mom as vastly more unforgivable than being a bad dad. It’s one of the worst crimes you can commit as a woman, as a female character. Bad moms are pretty much never allowed the nuance or understanding or sympathy often given to bad dads. And it’s no surprise that Shannon gets the amount of just, truly venomous hate that she does. Bc that’s always how people respond to bad moms. (Or even just, moms who have distinct personality traits beyond just being a mom).

How Cobra Kai Fails Robby Keene
Tumblr media
Yes, this is about both the show and the characters in it. And no, this is not meant to hate on the show or any character whatsoever. What I will point out is something the show is showing us through its framing, writing, and narrative choices. These are the 3 keywords I will be using a lot in this essay. Please make sure that you fully understand their meaning to understand what I say better.
[Word count - 3.8k words. I got carried away. What’s new?]
With the disclaimers out of the way, let’s go, baby!
Robby Keene is easily the most intriguing character in Cobra Kai to me. Mostly because I couldn’t slot him in any archetype when I started watching.
He isn’t the protagonist – he is billed 5th and introduced all the way in the 4th episode. He is not the quintessential hero or good guy because he is introduced as running scams. That should mean that he is the antagonist? Well, stealing some money so you can have food and having remorse while doing it really disqualifies you for that. He is neither the a-hole with the heart of gold because my guy is so quiet in nature.
The closest I could come up with was him being someone like Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of the Hunger Games series. She doesn’t have a distinct personality because all her energy goes into survival. Similarly, Robby doesn’t fit in any clear archetype because all his energy goes into survival as well. He regularly chucks his self-esteem down the drain and does what he needs to to survive – from running scams to allowing being bullied.
Robby’s story has been fascinating all through S1 to S4. I’m amused at how much prominence he holds in the narrative while simultaneously being treated unfairly than other characters. He is the 4th main character and is directly in competition with Miguel. And things are pretty bleak for the guy...
