ah, yes. SPOP. the master of "tell, don't show".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"how do we let the viewers know that Catra loves Adora? maybe make her do something nice for Adora or hesitate to hurt her? nah, let's just have the big bad evil villain point it out."
they literally had to make three different characters point out that adora and catra had feelings for each other, instead of showing it, especially with catra.
double trouble got the closest to the truth because they used the word "obsessed" and not "love". yes, that's all that catra's feelings towards adora were - an unhealthy obsession. i still don't like the fact that double trouble then goes on to say that catra "didn't want this" because she clearly did, but that's a topic for another day
but the fact that the only proof of catra's feelings towards adora is random screenshots of her smirking and saying/doing something borderline sensual (with the context usually being catra just manipulating and/or abusing adora as usual) or random characters pointing out that catra loves adora is so.. lazy.
and the fact that 90% of the fandom uses this as "proof" and are like "haha adora is so dumb she doesn't realise catra loves her". she is not dumb. why would you assume that a person who constantly enjoys hurting you and trying to kill you has any positive feelings towards you at all? this isn't ✨ gay repression ✨ it's literally a reasonable assumption (which was proven right over and over again).
is it really so hard to write a character who shows genuine affection? even if catra is mad at adora, why not show that she still cares? that part in s1 where she returns adora's sword and told her to escape the horde was nice. it made me feel like she cares about adora's safety and well-being, even if she feels betrayed by her. but then they ruined that by having catra tell adora that she did that because she didn't want adora to return. how romantic.
catra doesn't even show friendly affection, even when they were on the same side. she just belittled adora and constantly prioritized her own feelings over adora's. and when they're enemies, adora shows restraint and makes sure not to hurt catra too much while catra does the most heinous shit to adora with absolutely no remorse or hesitation. if she really always loved adora, she wouldn't be so quick to hurt her or control her.
but that's what you expect from a group of adult writers who still don't understand the consequences of war and abuse, and who constantly prioritizes one character over the rest. it's just embarrassing. i've seen fanfictions written by children that are better than this.

y'all, I just remembered that Bow is the youngest of thirteen. Where did the other twelve go? Even when the world is quite literally ending, Bow shows no concern for or even mentions his brothers. His fathers don't mention them either. Not a single one.
What's the point of giving him siblings, especially that many, and not including them in the story some way. Especially in situations where it makes sense.
They could have easily made Bow's backstory involve these characters. In my rewrite, I plan(?) on having Bow have an older brother (only one because thirteen kids are way too many) who was killed by the Horde. This is the reason why he insists on fighting in the war. It is also the reason why his fathers are so against him being involved.
They could have easily added something like this in the reboot. Bow literally said in the second episode that "everyone has lost someone to the Horde."
Who did he lose? Where are his brothers? Are they okay? Does he not have a close relationship with them? I guess we'll never know.

glimmadora appreciation post!
i can't believe they weren't a canon couple. like PLEASE LOOK AT THESE.
(I don't know if this expression exists outside of Brazil, but it's like they say: "they had the knife and the cheese in their hands and didn't do anything with it".)

there's a lot more moments i could add (including the hot springs scene), but tumblr has that limit of 10 images per post.

Stans are so funny. According to them, Shadow Weaver is an incredibly skilled and intelligent manipulator and poor Catra (who is also incredibly intelligent) was manipulated by this evil woman.
She's so awful... until she manipulates Glimmer that is. She's so "obviously" evil, and Glimmer is so stupid and selfish for being easily manipulated when she's in a vulnerable position after losing her mother and being forced to grapple with that grief (and her trauma) while fighting in a war and unexpectedly becoming queen.
What a terrible person Glimmer is, she's so evil for working with the enemy and Adora's abuser (remember Adora's abuse only matters when tearing down Glimmer!) even though Catra works alongside a literal genocidal maniac.
Don't forget that Glimmer is abusive to Adora for yelling at her and arguing with her! Catra is Adora's true friend and partner, she only aids in genocide and regularly assaults and tortures Adora because she's traumatised!

My biggest criticism of She-Ra is that Catradora should have been more toxic.
Nate, if you're gonna make the greatest friends to enemies to lovers story of all time you should have gone full bonkers with it. Let them stab each other.

I just found this tweet and we now have proof it’s accurate. Nimona and She Ra are pretty similar yet the way their fanbases reactions to the main relationship is night and day.
These stories are made by the same person that involves the protagonist defecting against the lifestyle they’ve lived under their entire life while their love interest (who knows they're in love with the protagonist throughout the entire story) stays with the organization they both grew up under and is promoted specifically due to their relationship to the protagonist. This promotion is hurtful because they find specific ways to hurt them but in the end, the love interest realizes how much they've been manipulated and that they're currently leading a war they don't even believe to hurt the person they're in love with.
Also, not to get Oppression Olympics here but to get a bit Oppression Olympics, when it comes to the pain they've inflicted on each other, Ambrosius cut off Balister's arm while Catra scratched Adora's (who was She Ra at the time) back.
So yeah, if catradora were an attractive m/m couple, people would cry over what a touching story it is.

haha not to be bitter on main or anything but like. just rewatched a couple episodes of spop and it kinda bothered me how glossed over the episode “white out” is, despite being a COMPLETELY FUCKING TERRIFYING concept???
it’s sort of weird to me that the only thing most people took away from that episode was That One Specific Scene (“looks like you’re mine now, adora”, which was also something i found pretty creepy??? but hey, that’s a subject for a different post LMAO) and pretty much brushed over everything else, especially considering the reaction to the later episode “save the cat” in which pretty much the same exact thing happened to a different character and everyone found it horrifying.

The fact that the characters of Season 5 She-Ra are handled so badly, it makes me hate the Season 5 poster even more.
The characters could have called Catra out for her actions, but no.
It's almost like a different show compared to Seasons 1 to 4.

okay, so is it just me or is it concerning that the whole "drunk adora" thing is clearly a result of catra infecting adora with a deadly virus and yet it's treated as a joke?
Tumblr media
both the show itself and the fans make light of this situation. adora was clearly in immense pain when she was infected and yet the show quickly changes its tone afterward and is like "haha look, adora is fine! she's not hurt or traumatized at all, look at how silly she is!"
the adult equivalent to this would be if a person spiked someone else's drink with clearly fucked up intentions, and people treated it as a joke. but even this isn't an accurate comparison because adora is not just drugged, she had just gone through an insanely painful experience that she had no control over.
this scene shouldn't be so light-hearted and humorous. this just proves how little the show writers cares about adora. we have to go forward to s5 and compare this with how catra was treated after she got chipped by horde prime. because these two scenes are clear parallels - a character who gets mind controlled by a villain, goes through immense pain and is turned into a weapon to fight their loved ones (the last part is a stretch in catra's case but whatever).
catra gets to take some rest, she gets to lash out at people because of her trauma, she is shown to have constant nightmares, she's shown to be scared of horde prime and is uncomfortable with the chip on her neck. in short, her trauma is taken seriously.
meanwhile, adora's trauma has no lasting consequences. she just gets to run around acting stupid for a while, then go back to normal after she is rescued.
the whole "cartoon character gets affected by something equivalent to getting drunk" is a common trope. but the difference is that in other cartoons, it's usually an accident. in the owl house, there are two instances of this trope - willow getting her memory wiped temporarily and luz falling sick. both of these aren't caused by deliberate actions. amity was definitely at fault in willow's situation but it was still an accident, and she was clearly anxious and guilty about what happened unlike catra. similarly, mabel from gravity falls also has one of these moments, where she eats too much sugar candy (or whatever that was). again, in this context, it's funny because it's an accident.
again, the show fails to deliver when it comes to adora's trauma, but what's new?

Can we talk about how bad a friend Perfuma is? (And I'm not just talking about how crappy she treated Entrapta.)
In season 5, Perfuma had acted all angry and heated over Catra being around, giving her side eyes and making off comments. But, if I'm remembering correctly, she had only done it because she treated Scorpia terribly. She didn't defend, or even mention, Adora, Glimmer, Entrapta, or Mermista.
Catra had tried to kill Adora on multiple occasions, but she says nothing.
Angella (Glimmer's mom!) is practically dead because of her. Crickets.
Entrapta was sent to die on a dangerous island, nada (which unfortunately makes sense considering she treated her poorly anyway).
Not only was Mermista's entire kingdom was completely destroyed not long before by a attack Catra had led, but also was chipped (just like Scorpia) and unable to confront her herself, yet not once does she mention her.
(Also, all of the Etherians Catra had killed or displaced during villain era. I guess the innocent civilians of Etheria just do not matter whatsoever.)
Now I'm not saying she shouldn't have defended Scorpia. However, she had supposedly been "friends" with them for three years, yet she defended none of them. She went on an entire tangent for someone she had only known for about two or three months at most. None of her other friends mattered. Only her new love interest did.
For a show that had the whole "friendship is power" message at the end of season 1, the writers clearly don't care about platonic relationships, only romantic ones. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I love how Spop stans accuse every critic of not watching the show, being illiterate or having no media literacy when they themselves:
•Can't even remember the context of most scenes, especially the Catra ones
•Make up shit that never happened
•Straight up edit some scenes (e.g editing Adora's mouth into a smile during that dance with Catra in S1)
•Almost purposefully misinterpret scenes and episodes to support their argument
👆 and all of this in an attempt to fight with critics

you guys know the s5 scene where catra left adora to die?
here's another thing i noticed.
Tumblr media
she's apologizing for dying. while it's really fucked up, it is within adora's character to apologize for something she couldn't control. i can't recall, but she did something similar to glimmer and bow a few minutes prior to this.
however, while the writers may not have intended for this, adora is also apologizing for this:
Tumblr media
now, you might be drawing a blank at how this is correlated to her apology, until you remember what exactly catra and adora were talking about here:
adora is about to die.
originally, the conversation was about adora somehow choosing shadow weaver over catra ( which did not happen ), but when catra wasn't winning the argument, she shifted it to be about adora practically being led to her death.
catra's wording starts out as her acknowledging that adora doesn't have a choice in this ( which goes against her earlier reaction to just crying and running away from her when she gets the failsafe ), but then it changes its tune and becomes an accusation of choosing this path, when adora has been forced to take this.
basically, adora is apologizing to catra in the finale as if to prove that catra was right, even though she's literally dying right in front of her.
and catra never apologizes for leaving her.
speaking of which, would this apology even work on catra?
because we all know the real reason she left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she left because somehow, someway, she twisted the entire conversation and everything related to shadow weaver as adora actively wanting to be around their abusive mother, despite showing multiple cases to catra herself that she doesn't.
adora doesn't like being around shadow weaver. she doesn't like her at all. she may not want the woman to suffer harshly, adora did heal her when she was sick, but she doesn't want to be around shadow weaver if she doesn't have to be.
and catra knows that. there's several instances throughout the show that she's smart enough to see and understand that. she even uses a torture method sw used on her previously on adora and swift wind in the previous season, because she knew it would severely hurt her. especially since catra, for whatever reason, put the electrocution on steroids.
so, it's not like catra has been blind to adora's distaste, she just chooses when to acknowledge it.
catra sees adora eventually dying as 1. choosing to die and 2. choosing shadow weaver over her, in this current scene.
adora has no idea catra thinks this way, so her apology for just dying is not only really fucked up, but is most likely entirely pointless.
these two don't see the same problem. at least, not the exact same one. catra may still be pissed off at adora daring to "choose" the universe over death, for daring to choose the lives of literally everyone on the motherfucking planet over herself, but she's still more upset at adora "choosing" their mother over her.
so, what is adora apologizing for exactly?
yes, for dying, but how does catra see it? knowing catra, the best case scenario is she probably sees it as adora apologizing for being "wrong" ( because she says "no matter what happens, i am staying with you", but then gaslights adora into staying ), and for choosing their mom over her, even though neither of those are true or correlated within the context.
this level of thinking is on par with stans, so i'm not surprised catra herself acts this way.
it sure did hurt my brain when i realized it, though.
