I'm curious. What concept SHINee has done that you find the most interesting, the most well done, and the one that had potential but missed at execution?

hm! potential but missed at execution is DEFINITELY dcm, there was SO much promise in those first set of fake reality promo photos that was pushed aside for appropriative 4th gen nonsense that was not at all necessary. i don't really know what happened with the creative team there and why they got cold conceptual feet, but i'm very sad that they never pushed thru for the full twin peaks-y fake suburbia theme.

most well done? tie between odd and 10f1. both of them were SO influential to the industry that we're still very visibly seeing the effects of them almost a decade later. personally i would put 1of1 slightly farther ahead of odd just because the styling for 1of1 is one of THE best stylings of all time in the history of kpop, and they damn well knew it. i love odd + view so so deeply but its legacy has been a .....worsening of stylings over the last eight years bc it made companies realize they could just put idols in normal clothes and stop investing so much in costuming.

most interesting? hands down tsol. it's so rare to see such a beautiful monument of grief and love so thoughtfully executed. i've talked at length before about the choreographies from this era and how incredible they are, but the cohesiveness of the full album and its aesthetics of nostalgia and examination of their legacy as a group and how they set an optimistic tone for the future is so so so fascinating. i rewatch the tsol mvs (good evening/i want you/countless, not our page bc it makes sob uncontrollably) more than any other shinee mvs because there's endless ways to unpack them and the inherent dichotomy of deep personal grief and having to pretend to be a veneer of yourself as your job adds such a compelling layer to them.

#i love tsol so goddamn much. i know it's a controversial take amongst fans but i do think it one of/if not their best album #in terms of most complete work #i also love art about grief #shinee #shinee w #text #answers #my second answer for missed potential is some of their early eras pre sherlock like replay or even lucifer #it was a different era of kpop and i think they were good for their time #but it would be fun to take a crack at them from a contemporary perspective #so not really missed potential more of a.....would do over. just for funsies. if that makes sense #the fake reality concept photos changed my brain chemistry #taemin's one with the flaming billboard has been my phone wallpaper ever since it came out no joke #not my lockscreen tho. my lockscreen is a stupid selfie of me n my bestie bc i miss him :((

sometimes it really hits me, just how lonely loki was before mobius. they spent their whole life being in thor's shadow and never having friends of their own. they felt like they could never let their guard down and they didn't have anyone to talk to, besides maybe frigga. anyone. they always had to be sharp and ready to perform, because nobody seemed to like the "real" them. then mobius came along and casually admitted he was a fan and where others have dismissed loki's cleverness, mobius firmly said he knows how smart loki is. as tom said, mobius is able to sit in their presence without judging them and loki has never had that before. do you understand how lonely that is? to always have to perform bc you know others are judging you and they are. but. mobius is able to sit with them without judgement, while knowing everything they've ever done or could do. because he believes they are capable of change and they are. through him, they change. and i need you to understand how lonely loki was before mobius and lot of people say 2012 loki and tva loki are completely different people but i don't believe that's true. they have changed drastically since 2012 but tva loki is what 2012 loki could've become if they had a friend. if they had someone who they completely trusted and trusted them back, who liked them and took the time to listen to them. mobius gave all of that and more to them, he stuck his neck out for them countless times, he trusted them over and over, even when he knew it was a bad idea, and most importantly, he didn't give up on them. that's all loki ever needed, for someone to believe in them down to their bones. like i just.

Hello, A rover, A gambler, A libertine. I just wanted to say that I really love your blog and all the info you give on stage designing and outfit styling, and basically any other info you have to share about what work goes into making a performance/video look the way it looks. It's really informative and I always love food for brain so mwahhh thank youu.

That being said, I'm very new to the k-pop scene and even newer to being a SHINee fan, but I am already pretty deep down the hole and I absolutely adoreee them and your insight on them (specially Taemin) has made me appreciate them as artists sooooo much moree.

So if you don't mind could you share some thoughts about the Hard era styling? I would love to hear your thoughts on it!! I hope you're doing good <3

as for the hard styling, i'm a fan! a lot of people have compared hard and dcm for various reasons (mostly negative ones bc they both are proving to be controversial shinee tracks) but i'm going use the comparison to talk about the styling bc i think the intentions were really similar, but hard was more effective. a thread that's been present in shinee's post military cbs is 'shinee twist on a modern industry trend', which is not a wrong way to go about anchoring cbs, especially since it does work as far as attracting new fans goes, but it does have a built in flaw where if the contemporaneous trends themselves don't have a strong thematic basis then............obviously trying to do any kind of twist on them takes a lot more conceptual work. this is the problem that dcm had; dcm was very much a 'look we can do what the kids do!' but what the kids were doing in late 2020/early 2021 was very formless and right before the crash of the 'fourth gen hardcore bg' trend, so it was a lot of disconnected but persistant loose threads from the entire fourth gen era that had culminated into a mush. so in the shinee's stylists' attempt to make some kind of sense of it they kinda also created a mush. but a different kind of mush. my hypothesis is that the stylists and creative team didn't want to commit seriously to a specific concept bc that wasn't on trend at the time, and so that's why dcm had several different promising ideas but then botched them all on the landing bc the creative team got cold feet about going against the grain for the first cb back in three years. personally i don't agree with their strategy bc there are a lot of flaws with dcm and the whole reality/fake reality concept ended up being racist when they could have very easily not done that, but the strategy DID work and it seems that the creative team were right about fans not being as interested in concept based cbs bc atlantis got paid dust. anyways.

how does this compare to hard? well, hard has the same ideological footing: shinee twist on a current trend. and the current trend this time is an actual concept! so already hard has an easier base to stand on because there IS something there thematically to work with. all the threads are very clearly anchored in the 'y2k' but the shinee twist is that it's more based in late 90s/early 00s hiphop, which is both sonically relevant and different from the hyperpop esque candy crush that a lot of the y2k stylings have become. the oversized shapes and loud logos are all prominent in early hiphop styling (and thus popular culture on a 5ish year delay), and elements like neon colours, layering unconventional garments together and repurposing military looks are all hallmarks of subculture fashion from the 00s, namely skater/emo/punk. the styling feels coherant and put together bc it's drawing from historical evidence (feels fucking WEIRD saying that about the 90s oof) and trends that did actually exist and were worn by real people. but of course with the typical kpop level of exaggeration, obvs.

#hard/dcm as a paradigm is an interesting thought concept and im kinda curious as to if it DOES actually become a paradigm #or its just a breaking hiatus cb phenomenon #anyways. yes im still bitter about the wasted potential of dcm #kpop questions #shinee #shinee w #kpop styling #one of my fave outfits is taemin's blond extensions with the ball cap. that look is soooooooo mid 00s #text #answers
