Tetsu Misato makes up for what he lacks in height with his energy and determination. Due to a mysterious promise he made to his hospitalized mother, Tetsu is driven to earn money. So much so that he plains to join the work force after graduation and already is working several part-time jobs while in high school, abandoning the soccer team as a result. To prove to his father that he is ready to hold down a job, he begins working through his father’s housekeeping agency at the Karasawa mansion. There have long been rumors that the place is haunted, but Tetsu soon learns that the “frail, sickly daughter” who allegedly lives in a separate building is a real and friendly girl, no apparition at all.

In fact, Shizu doesn’t seem ill at all, but some of the things she says are strange, like “I’d like you to come see me… to see Shizu Karasawa again.” And when Tetsu confesses his love (thankfully without prolonged angst) Shizu is troubled and invites him to visit again on his next work day before she gives him a straight answer. When he complies, he finds a completely different Shizu, who refers to the personality Tetsu interacted with as “Haru” and only vaguely remembers Tetsu. She doesn’t seem to know who she herself really is.

Most of this first volume is Tetsu figuring out the mystery of what exactly Shizu’s deal is, which I don’t want to spoil, but I will say I definitely enjoyed the read. Early on, there are some gag reaction panels that aren’t particularly amusing, but which make the darker, creepier moments later on land with more impact. Tetsu is quite the scaredy cat, and while he initially visits Shizu because he cares about her (well, the Haru version, at least) and doesn’t want her to be lonely, by the end of the volume, Shizu’s mother has made him an offer he can’t refuse, and though he’s now scared of Shizu because of what he’s learned, he’s compelled to stay near her to protect someone he cares about—and this time, I think that’s referring to his mother or his family and ties in to the unknown reason that he needs to earn all that money. It’s a nice shift in his motivations, especially as it occurs after the real Shizu has shown that she cares about Tetsu, a first for her.

The tables have turned in their relationship, and I very much look forward to see how the story progresses from here.

Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty is complete in six volumes. Volume two will be out in English next week.

Dernière nouveauté shôjo de l’année 2017 des Éditions Akata, Good Morning Little Briar-Rose s’imposera très vite comme un incontournable. Encensée par tous les professionnels du Japon, dont l’auteure d’ A Silent Voice, cette série aussi douce que mélancolique va surprendre et toucher un public mixte, autant grâce à ses dessins uniques que son ambiance, mais aussi son mélange de genres. Une future référence, à n’en pas douter !

Parce qu’il souhaite prouver à son père qu’il pourra arrêter ses études à la sortie du lycée, le jeune Tetsu a commencé à travailler comme employé de maison pour la prestigieuse famille Karasawa. à la demeure surnommée ” la maison au sommet de la colline “, le lycéen se doit de respecter une seule règle : ne pas surtout pas s’approcher de la petite annexe du jardin, dans laquelle réside cloîtrée la jeune fille malade de la famille Karasawa. Pourtant, un jour, son regard croisera celui de la mystérieuse Shizu. Aussitôt attiré par son sourire empli de tristesse, Tetsu se permet alors de braver l’interdit… Il ne s’imagine pas encore les nombreux secrets qui entourent la jeune fille. Qui est-elle vraiment ?

Mon avis :

Pour commencer, il faut savoir que je n’ai pas lu (pour l’instant) le précèdent succès de Megumo Morino qui est A Silent Voice. L‘engouement qu’il y a eu pour cette série m’a convaincu de me jeter sur sa nouvelle, d’autant plus que ce shôjo qui a l’air terriblement doux et romantique.

Un jeune lycéen, Tetsu, commence un nouveau travail dans une maison renommée et a comme consigne de ne pas approcher la maison annexe dans le jardin du domaine, car y vit la fille de ses employeurs, qui est malade et qui ne peut sortir. Evidemment, vous devinez bien ce qu’il va se passer, Tetsu va finir par approcher la maison et il va rencontrer la fille, Shizu, qui va énormément l’intriguer.

J’ai été complètement surprise par ce manga, je pensais lire un énième shôjo, qui allait être mignon, plaisant mais assez prévisible. Mais franchement, l’histoire est complètement originale, on ne reste pas du tout dans une intrigue classique de shôjo ! De plus, le héros principal est un garçon, ce qui n’est pas très courant dans ce genre, surtout qu’il a l’air d’avoir un caractère et une histoire très intéressante.

 En ce qui concerne les dessins, bien qu’on reconnaisse le genre, je les ai trouvé très harmonieux et soignés, cela fait vraiment partie du charme de l’histoire et je les ai vraiment trouvé particuliers. Aussi, les personnages sont particulièrement beaux. Souvent dans les shôjo, les personnages sont mignons mais là ils sont vraiment beaux et leurs visages expriment énormément d’émotions.

L’histoire est complètement intrigante et pleins de choses vont être éclaircies dans le second tome qui sort le 14 décembre et puis le tome 3 sortira le 8 février. J’ai vraiment très hâte d’en lire plus sur cette histoire qui est à la fois sombre et poétique, je vous la recommande !

So sweet. Haru was my favorite spirit. While I'm happy that it seems like he's moved on. I wish I could have seen more of him. I hope he gets reincarnated as tetsu and shizus kids with the other spirits or something.
