For @thatdazaikin: here is a lengthy post about a small list of works of Kunikida-sensei's that I've read. I'm not sure how to describe his writing except for "it's very Meiji-era" HAHA

Here is a VERY short bio for those who are interested:

Kunikida Doppo (1871-1908) published poetry and short stories which were, depending on who you ask, romantic and/or naturalistic in nature. Regardless of what one might decide his works to be, it can be said that his significance as a Meiji-era author is due to his influence in the birth of Japanese naturalism (considered to be started by Tayama Katai. Yes the BSD refs are real). Throughout his life Kunikida had struggled in many areas of his life - finances, romances, and other personal successes - which shaped his personal views and inevitably his writing.

DISCLAIMER: I do not have any formal education in literature, moreover Japanese literature. These personal opinions are from someone who just likes reading and the BSD franchise.

Let me start with my general opinion of Kunikida-sensei: I wouldn't say he's my favorite author of the era (it's Natsume-sensei for the Meiji period for me ehe), but he's quite interesting to say the least.

His writing style is a mix of personal angst and lots of nature descriptions. I can see it being a hindrance for some to enjoy his stories (because it certainly was for me, at least in the beginning) but I do believe it adds a peculiar charm. Hopefully you'll still give his works a shot!

Old Gen tagging: @requiem626k for this story, jic you might be interested!

This is what Kunikida-sensei himself considers as his true first "work of fiction." It's mostly a tragic story with no reason for being tragic than because it is. The imagery of water and winter here is quite beautiful, I think, but I do feel that although the emotional punch is strong in the end the overall structure of the story could have been more concise. But this is still my favorite work of his (so far, at least).

Unforgettable People

It's half-story, half-essay. Similar to Old Gen the impressionistic descriptions of certain events in the story is quite beautiful, but I think that the strength of this piece lies in its message. My concern with this story is also similar to Old Gen.

Letter from Yugahara

It's one of those "if I could tag Nobuko I would" type of stories. Honestly just a young man being a little dramatic HAHA it's sort of cute yet 100% relatable.

An Honest Man

Honestly, I didn't know what I expected from the title. Certainly not the type of protagonist I expected from Kunikida-sensei, but the central idea is interesting nonetheless. The themes (especially with the woman) I've noticed are quite common in Japanese literature in general (but especially later, up to around Dazai-sensei's time).

River Mist

This is the closest to autobiographical, I think. While most of his works were based on real people, this one echoes his own feelings and frustrations quite well. It's considered to be one of, if not the best of work Kunikida-sensei's. It has a lot of water imagery (again - he really likes water) and children (he really likes children - in the good sense, mind you) that portray the inner torment of the protagonist.

Currently reading: Meat and Potatoes (will edit this post once I'm done I just can't get to reading it without getting hungry HAHA)

like, finally there was someone shorter than him. because let’s be real, Dazai was barely taller than Chuuya in Fifteen.

i think people forget how small Dazai was too— not just in height, but also in weight. He was underweight in Dark Era, but in Fifteen & even at present he's barely within the healthy weight range for his height. he was constantly described as a twig in Fifteen, and almost every time he's introduced in the light novels he's called lanky, slender, etc.

Fyodor Analysis (Flowers)

Analysing THIS scene.

This scene from the season 4 intro featuring Fyodor is, blankly, flowers. But after obsessing over flower symbolism lately ( as an amateur, spare me), I figured that it would be fun to look into the meaning of flowers. This very unoriginal idea was probably done before but whatever.

Blue roses:

Blue roses symbolise secrecy and mystery, which, undoubtedly, suits Fyodor. So, moving on (help I suck at analyses it's a miracle I got an attainment badge for English).

Lily of the Valley:

Lily of the Valley symbolises purity, joy, love, sincerity, happiness and luck (Yes, I copied it from Google) But one interesting thing is that it even has connections with the Bible.

Song of Solomon 2  I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.

Jesus was also described as 'Lily of the Valley' for that He alone is sinless, holy, and separate from sinners. This, well... this seems to expand on Fyodor's motive of wanting the Book to eliminate and purify humanity's "sins".

Red roses:

On the surface, red roses symbolise love and romance which, Fyodor does not seem to express. But after some more research, I found that the deeper the colour of the red rose, the more ready you are for commitment. But this is just on the side of romance (Fic writers, take the notes). There are other meanings to red roses such as desire, longing, respect, admiration, courage, sacrifice, beauty and perfection.

Tithonia Rotundifolia:

Before I go into the meaning, I just want to say this one was very hard to do. There was a bit of a mind debate on whether these are Tithonia Rotundifolia or orange daisies. But in terms of the shape, I figured it would be the Tithonia Rotundifolia.

Tithonia rotundifolia is a hardy and drought-tolerant plant, often thriving in challenging conditions. As such, it can symbolize endurance, resilience, and the ability to thrive despite adversity. Also, giving or receiving Tithonia rotundifolia can be a gesture of admiration and appreciation, acknowledging the recipient's positive qualities or expressing gratitude. While I personally do not think Fyodor is a person who shows admiration and appreciation, he certainly was admired and appreciated by lots, such as Sigma, Nikolai, Ivan et cetra.

Magenta Roses:

Magenta roses symbolize deep, passionate love, echoing the fervent emotions often associated with red roses. They convey a profound sense of affection and desire. But considering Fyodor's personality, we'll move on. Magenta roses also represent gratitude, appreciation, and admiration. That links perfectly to my previous analysis of the Tithonia rotundifolia.

With a bit more research I found that the rich and vibrant colour of magenta roses evokes feelings of enchantment and mystery. They can also signify the magic and allure of love, adding a touch of mystique to romantic gestures. But again, considering Fyodor, let's not stick to the romance side of things.

Olive branches:

This one is more of an optional analysis since I'm not sure if they really are olive branches in the first place. Anyway, we are pretty familiar with the international peace symbol (the well-known one, anyway) being a dove carrying an olive branch with its beak. This symbolises peace and harmony, which at least, in my opinion, is what Fyodor is aiming for to create a "sinless" world without abilities.

Narcissus:

The Greek myth of Narcissus falling in love with his reflection and turning into a flower symbolises self-love and egotism. While this may not entirely suit Fyodor, I do believe he has self-confidence in himself, perhaps even too much that he didn't consider trusting his allies. In fact, that was how he reached his downfall. The Narcissuses in the scene, at the end, bloomed over the other flowers and caused them to grey and wilt. In my opinion, this may symbolise two things:

This shows some of the good qualities that were symbolised in the flowers that didn't suit Fyodor were ruined by his self-confidence and lack of trust. For example, Fyodor didn't have the love symbolised in the roses because his goal buried those emotions down.

This shows how all of his good qualities were soon consumed by his lack of trust and confidence in himself. In fact, the Narcissuses taking over were like how his confidence and arrogance in not needing another plan just in case (we're talking about breaking out from Meursault here) taking over him and resulting in his ultimate (hopefully temporary) downfall and death.

Anyway, these are just my silly rambles. Use this as a reference or whatever, don't take it too seriously I really don't know much about flowers lol. I'm trying to make more analyses cos they're so fun to read (/>^<\) Have fun with the new pieces of information, I spent 1 hour on this and opened 23 computer tabs (Yes, I am not very efficient)! New random BSD take based on nothing but my own thoughts and selfish desires of making Chuuya a little bit more feral gremlin. This may be a bit long and all over the place.

So, I was thinking about fanart I’ve seen of Tetcho and Chuuya and I think it’d be fucking great if Chuuya was also sort of a menace when it came to mixing food? Like not to the same degree as Tetcho (though they both get worse the more they hang out together) but not only does Chuuya have some weird genetics/lab rat shit going on with him (who knows what may be up with his sense of taste,) he also grew up in a gang of kids on the street. That boy did NOT have a normal diet and I feel like Kyoyous training could only do so much.

Anyway, I think Chuuya also enjoys horrific food combinations, (perhaps partially due to him still having the inclination to eat what he can when he can.) I like the concept that Chuuya’s the kind of person to just mix everything on his plate together into one homogeneous lump and eat it like that. You know those horrible like, 50’s American gelatin creations with the unflavored gelatin and peas and bananas with Mayo on top kinda thing? Genuinely something he would eat and enjoy. Cabbage and peanut butter sandwich? Down the hatch. Eats onions like apples and enjoys tormenting Dazai with it. (Who yeah, okay, his eating habits may not be the BEST but at least he doesn’t put wasabi on Oreos and then dip them in coffee like a fucking psychopathic chibi he knows.)

I don’t think Dazai was completely disgusted by Chuuya’s eating habits though (well okay maybe he was but he found it funny too.) He enjoyed experimenting with different combinations and trying to find where Chuuya drew the line. He used to add random shit to Chuuya’s food when he wasn’t looking, just to see if his partner would notice (usually he didn’t, or maybe he simply didn’t care.)

As Chuuya gets older I think his pallet does become a bit more refined, (or at least he pretends it is when company’s around,) thanks to Kyoyou’s etiquette training and having access to actual recipes and such. But he still eats weird shit I think, and a friendship/relationship with Tetcho I feel would have them making and consuming the most ungodly meals to ever grace the earth. Those absolutely fucked protein shakes some people make? Yeah.

I love them being friends and shit ‘cuz I think they would both amplify each others nasty little bitey gremlin attributes and it would be fucking hilarious. Also boyfriends getting swole together? + the height difference? Hell yeah.

Anyway Chuuya deserves to be more of a gremlin I think. He may know how to act like a sophisticated gentleman at this point, but he’s still a punk ass troublemaker, he just dresses better now. Love him sm <3

(Also mostly unrelated, very not thought out idea, Dazai has gotten Atsushi to eat part of a leather shoe before. I don’t know why but it just feels like something he would do.)

Dazai: **his expression grows serious** You're asking a difficult question, Akutagawa-kun. **pauses** .... I had my reasons, but they're complicated and deeply personal. Believe it or not, there are matters that even I struggle to put into words. **gazes into the distance thoughtfully** ... I left when I felt it was necessary, not on a simple whim. And sometimes, perhaps, leaving without a word is a strategy in itself.

Akutagawa: A... strategy... ? **a pause** …. Is that really the reason? **his tone is cold and hard**

Dazai: **nods** That's right, Akutagawa-kun. It might be hard for you to understand, but sometimes the less you know, the safer you are. **sighs** It wasn't a decision made lightly, nor without its share of internal conflicts. But now, we have a different mission to focus on-- are you able to put aside our personal matters for the task at hand?

Akutagawa: **stares at him intently for a moment, then quickly averts his gaze again** …. I see. I think … I can understand it a little better, now. Yes… **a contemplative but softer tone** Very well. I'll fulfill this mission-- without fail, and with as little of that bumbling tiger's interference as possible! So, this time... watch me, Dazai-san. **his fists clench in determination**

Dazai: **smiles** That's the spirit, Akutagawa-kun. I believe in your abilities, but just remember that this mission is for the greater good, and sometimes we must endure the company of those we aren't particularly keen on, to protect the well-being of many others. **pauses** Now, let's go meet up with Atsushi-kun and get this show on the road.

⮑ It scares me to say he’s actually a really good cuddler?

⮑ I don’t really see Dazai initiating it at first, and if he did it would mostly be to mess around with you. I think the first time you both cuddle each other is when one of you is not in a good place mentally. Whether that be you, he knows immediately and pulls you into his arms, cradling your head with the back of his hand while holding you close. Or it’s him, tucking his head into your chest or neck, his arm wrapped around your waist afraid to let go.

⮑ Once he gets used to being vulnerable and physically affectionate with his partner I believe he’s very physically affectionate. If he can cuddle with you, he will. In public? Not so much, he’ll stick to holding your hand or letting you rest your head on his shoulder. At home? He’s your personal leech. He blackmails you into cuddles lol. While rereading this I believe he’d be affectionate in public to drive kunikida insane.

⮑ Back to my first point, he’s a very good cuddler. It might not seem like it, especially when you look at his past. Whether or not he’s had experience with physical affection/knows exactly what to do, it doesn’t matter. Look at his personality as a whole, this boy knows how to work people out, and how to please them. His hold feelings secure, sometimes almost too much.

⮑ 9/10 cuddles are very comfortable most of the time, but sometimes you are not allowed to move and damn it you need to pee.

⮑ To be honest I don’t really see him as a cuddler, but he’ll do it for you.

⮑ The thing about Kunikida is that, as we all know, if he’s in a relationship with you he’s serious. And he’ll do anything to please you. So if your main form of affection is physical and you love cuddles, then he will cuddle you. He rarely initiates cuddle time, and usually when he does it’s because he can tell you need cuddles.

⮑ At first cuddles with kunikida are a bit stiff, but after some reassurance it becomes easier. He picks up on your favorite positions, what soothes you, and what irritates you. He writes all of this down ofc. He will never be little spoon during cuddle sessions, nope. Closest you get is him laying his head on your chest, but to him that requires letting someone else take the reins in the relationship which scares him. There are times though when he comes back from a case and is mentally distraught, and holding him is one of the only ways to soothe him.

⮑ Movie nights consist of you laying your body back against his chest, cuddles in bed can be anything in regards of holding you. He won’t admit it but sometimes when a day has gotten to him knowing you’re safe in his arms help. Never in public though, that’s a no no. Especially in front of his colleagues like Dazai. Cuddles are a private matter.

⮑ 7/10, after time he’s cuddles are comforting, but sometimes he misses the mark.

⮑ He purrs. On accident. That’s the headcanon.

⮑ The first time he purrs you’re both cuddling and he for the first time completely lets his defenses down around you. That plus the fact that his tiger is very found of you, he ends up purring. Poor baby is so flustered and he won’t stop apologizing. It’s cute.

⮑ In my mind he’s 50/50 with his cuddles in the beginning, but it doesn’t take long for him to learn! He’s an orphan and he grew up with no affection, especially not physical. So it’s all new to him. But I definitely see him as a super cuddly person. I think after his first time cuddling you he’d become addicted.

⮑ The first time you two cuddled it was slightly awkward, he didn’t know what was comfortable for him and was afraid of hurting you. How? I don’t know, but he’s Atsushi so anything was possible in his mind. Once he finds the right positions for him and gets used to it he loves physical affection and cuddling. It doesn’t matter who’s holding who. In fact, he loves when they switch it up and his partner holds him sometimes instead.

⮑ Play with his hair and he will always purr. He hated it at first, he felt embarrassed. But after reassurance and realizing it was comforting to you he got used to it. Sometimes when you’re not doing well and you’re cuddling, he’ll purr on purpose to comfort you. This should be a more serious headcanon I’m pffft. In all seriousness he loves cuddling you and his temperature runs high so he’s very warm.

⮑ 10/10 cuddles in my opinion. Warm, comfortable, soft, like cozing up next to a furnace on a nice winter day.

⮑ Can he even sit still long enough for cuddles?

⮑ Cuddling with Ranpo is like being in a relationship with him, you never know what’ll happen or when it’ll happen. It’s chaotic at best. Whether he has a hard time staying still, focusing on cuddles, or if he’ll ask or initiate them. Even more so, sometimes he likes to mess with you if you ask him to cuddle with you.

⮑ No really he will tease you, in public or private. Which brings me to my second point, he loves pda. He could care less that it makes people uncomfortable. At work? Someone is sitting in someone’s lap, it’s a must. I don’t make the rules. On the train? He’s resting his head against your shoulder either sucking on a lollipop or rambling to you.

⮑ It’s easy to say that the first time you both cuddled it was actually before you two were even in a relationship. Personally I do not see Ranpo dating someone he does not know, so you guys were friends first. And at first, he didn’t really care for being touched or touching anyone. But after a rough case you offered him a hug and he all but melted into your arms. Which can I just say, having him in your arms feels like heaven. He’s so squishy and cute. Holding him while he’s pouting? You’re done for.

⮑ I think it’s safe to say that after long days or tough cases being in your arms and being told he did great today is exactly all he needs. Even sweets can’t compare to that. I now headcanon he calls you sweets, it’ suits him.

⮑ 8/10, he’s very cute and soft, laying against him and taking a nap while he work is a dream. He just can’t sit still for long.

The world was in a haze. 

You ache. You’re exhausted. Your stomach hurts. Your head hurts. Your mouth feels fuzzy with the lack of brushing your teeth after throwing up.

But you don’t say a word. You don’t call in. Instead, you get up, put on a mask, brush your teeth, and head to work as the infamous Nakahara Chuuya’s secretary. 

Luckily, he doesn’t comment on your mask when you arrive at your desk.

He sweeps into his office as he always does, his coat billowing around his ankles. He sheds it and his hat on the coat rack. He brushes past you without so much as a hello, and his office door shuts with a bang that has your brain vibrating in your head. 

Guess he wasn’t in the mood to talk today?

Work goes slowly. Almost agonizingly so. 

You remind yourself to alternate taking Ibuprofen and Tylenol every four hours and keep your mask on except for drinking water. But it does little good. You still feel feverish and achy, and your stomach is constantly churning despite having walked down to the corner store and bought yourself a can of soup to eat for your lunch break. 

Things come to a head when you knock on Chuuya’s office door with some reports from last week. 

“Come in.” His voice is muffled, but you hear it even through the door and what feels like cotton in your ears. The hinges squeal and grate on your nerves and eardrums. 

“I have those reports you wanted, sir.” You say through your mask, and he looks up from his laptop, sticking a hand out for them as he runs a hand through his hair. 

He looks annoyed. 

You give him the reports and go to leave when he stops you by saying your name. You turn.

“Are you alright?” He asks, and you blink. When did he ever ask if you were alright? You were positive he barely even knew your name.

“I’m fine, sir. Just a little cold, is all.” You say, and his frown deepens, but he doesn’t get up from his desk. 

“If you say so.” He mutters, and you take that as your cue to leave. 

But you promptly pass out the moment you turn around. 

When you come to, you have no idea how much time has passed. But you hear something… Just on the edge of your hearing… 

“—n you hear me?” A voice… A familiar voice… Your boss, maybe? 

When you open your eyes, you find you were correct. He’s leaning over you with a concerned look on his face, and you realize you’re on the couch in his office. 

“What happened?” You groan, and he sits back, clearly relieved. 

“I thought you died there for a minute,” He grumbled, and you felt white-hot embarrassment shoot up your spine and warm your ears. When you go to sit up, he is on his feet helping you.

“I passed out?” You ask, and he nods, 

“You went down pretty quickly and smacked your head, so I called Doc. He should be here soon.” At that, you swing your legs over the side of the couch. 

“I’m fine. Just a bit dizzy, is all. I have to get back to work.” 

His hand clamps around your wrist, and you freeze. He wears his standard leather gloves, but his hand is still warm through the material. 

“You aren’t goin’ anywhere. And it’s either Doc or the hospital.” He warns, and you glare stubbornly at the floor before relenting and sitting back down on the couch. Chuuya is sitting on the coffee table directly in front of you, hands clasped and resting on his knees. 

Doc, as eccentric as ever, gives you a clean bill of health and a cold compress for the bump on your head. He also says something to your boss that you don’t quite catch, but he nods and dismisses the man. 

“You’re taking the rest of today and tomorrow off.” He says abruptly, and you nearly trip where you are walking back to your desk. 

“What? No! I can’t afford to do that!” You retort, and he rolls his eyes,

“You’ll still be paid.” You pause in your argument and frown. 

“I will?” Chuuya huffs and puts a hand on the small of your back, steering you toward the elevator of the high-rise office building. 

“Of course you will. Just…” He pauses, and you look at him. His cheeks are flushed pink, and he refuses to look at you.

“Yes?” You prompt, and he sighs, still averting his gaze. 

“Come back feeling better.” He says, and you grin at him as the elevator door closes on you.

“Yessir!”

so as spoiler for the ending im planning for my comic: kabru tells falin it's no good to decide whether she should continue her relationship with marcille or not at this point where she's still confused about her feelings. so he suggests falin should go on her travel around the world to see how she would feel when she's away from marcille. "marcille can be overbearing because she experienced almost losing you. i'm not saying what she's doing is right, of course, but i am saying that you'll have an easier time deciding whether you truly love her or not if you know how it feels like to be without her."

and in the end, falin realizes she wants to be with marcille, but she wants to start over first as friends, to get to know each other as proper equals, instead of a senior who took her of her junior, instead of a distressed savior and her damsel. "i don't want to lose you, marcille"

1. Chuuya is dense, dense as hell.... He would have a very hard time differentiating flirting, fighting or being friendly. so when new people try to shoot their chance the older people who tried are like "lol, good luck!"..

2. (Romantic skk) If anyone fell first, then it's Dazai... If anyone fell harder it's..... also it's our bi-king Dazai..

3. Chuuya genuinely hated Dazai... at first... I think at 16 he was getting along well... (until the whole sb)... At 17 he grew to like him.. At 18... well... the relation was tainted a bit... (and was more like a breakup!).. At 22 it was straight up a makeout..

4. (Platonic SKK).. There was a neat chance that Dazai didn't live in a shipping container... that was to throw Verlaine off. He did the set-up between 1-year and/Or 6 months... (he was really commited to make a fool out of verlaine). But never lived in it... he lived with Chuuya or spend more time with Chuuya... (both of them complained about it)

5. [canon! Don't care what you say] The Junichiro's, Kenji and Kunikida were the only people with normal childhood.. Although for Kunikida he may or may not have a minor tragedy (like parental death)..

6. Dazai must've had parents... But had a very abusive relation with them... But one time they were stuck in a situation where Dazai could've helped but he did not... thus their death... He hates himself for it..

7. I believe Mori could've been better if he just placed human emotion higher than a mission... and his weird fetish!.. Like the of Beast!Mori...

8.[Fact] Asagiri must give Chuuya his vacation... Maybe go to Europe, and catch up with Adam..

(person whose tags you reblogged on that ask about the anime here lol) I think what a lot of Bones defenders don't seem to realize is that this isn't just a case of us whining because we don't get what we want, like us complaining about like "they didn't draw this panel Exactly How It is In The Manga, how dare they!!!", we're not being nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking; these kinds of supposedly minor complaints probably wouldn't bother me in another show, because no adaptation is perfect and there will always be differences in how the panels are adapted, but in specifically BSD it bothers me because of the bigger picture, which is the fact that all of these tiny blunders are a direct result of them not understanding what kind of series BSD is and the tone and feelings each scene in the manga is meant to convey -- they see it as a shounen and adapt it as such, like you said. It's not about these moments in of themselves that are the problem, but because there's SO MANY of them, and they all add up, and they speak to the aforementioned much larger problem. I also just think that's kind of ignorant to just act like a season(s) with a downgrade in art quality, so many reused frames and animations, and disturbingly long static frames sometimes is in any way acceptable as a finished product??? This isn't about me and what I want, this is about the fact that they CLEARLY suffered to get this out and that is NOT OKAY. THERE ARE SO MANY GLARING PRODUCTION ISSUES (have been since season 3) AND THAT IS NOT OKAY. Not for the people who were forced to work on it, not for BSD as a story, and not for Asagiri and Harukawa! And not for the fans either, of course, but I emphasize the first three the most. It's just pure laziness and greed on the part of the Bones higher-ups who wanted it to be like this, and that will never be acceptable, for anyone. The quality of the anime has been significantly better the last few episodes (literally the instant Akutagawa kicked the bucket...) — by which I mean, they're doing the bare minimum for an adaptation, which is better than they usually do! — but I sure couldn't tell you why...! It's left me ecstatic, happy, and excited to watch lately, which is such a relief from constant sadness, outrage, and feeling insulted, but that still doesn't change the fact that it should have been this good THIS WHOLE TIME, and that there's absolutely NO REASON other episodes had to be sacrificed for the better ones: they should have been given enough time to do all of it justice (again, as much justice as Bones can ever do with BSD lol, but still. Season 2 is still so dear to me for a reason, and it's not just because of the nostalgia I have from watching it in 2016). Sorry for rambling more about this in your inbox asldjgflds, but tl;dr I just feel like our complaining comes across as bitching about scenes not being a perfect 1-to-1 panel recreation to a lot of people, when it's so much more than that — it's about BSD as a whole not getting the treatment it really, truly deserves, and how heartbreaking that is to see. It is heartbreaking to me to see how much Asagiri apparently loves the anime, from what he said at Anime Expo, when his story deserves so, so much better than he seemingly is even aware of. And I will always give Bones due credit when they've earned it, like I have the last few weeks, so I'm not even always constantly ragging on them, but even that praise comes with the caveat of "there's no explanation for why the quality is suddenly better now, or why it's so inconsistent in general, and I shouldn't even have to praise it so much, because this level of quality should be a given."

Yeah I agree that Bones has repeatedly demostred a very faulty understanding of the manga tone and even of the themes it carries on– even though there's also a chance that the shift in tone was intentional. They saw that undemanding shonen sold better than seinen (which may now seem easy to disprove, but the same probably wasn't as evident back in 2015 when the bsd anime was announced), so they made the marketing choice to declinate bsd so that it could cater to a shonen audience too, and stuck with that decision. That would make sense although in the end, as you said, it resulted in a series that feels deeply disconnected in tone and themes to its original, all while the narrated events stay the same.

I do wholeheartedly agree that if you need so many reused frames and to resort to static frames that drag on for several dozens of seconds, then your season simply isn't ready for release. C'mon, seriously, an original op and ending are the bare MINIMUM. The only reason why they didn't postpone the season release is greed. Not to mention (very much needed to mention), it's harmful for the animators twice: on one hand, because it necessarily puts them under a lot of stress and overworking conditions in order to churn out an entire season in such a short timespan; but I also feel like we shouldn't overlook the other aspect that is just... How extremely saddening and disheartening it is to not be able to dedicate the time you'd want to your art product, and seeing it published in a way that looks rushed and unfinished. I think it's important to acknowledge the frustration animators are likely to experience when that happens, especially because most times it's people who love their job of artist and of course work hard so that the result is the best it can be. But yeah the thing is: it's important - no matter how unpleasant - to say, it's not okay, because otherwise a low quality product is only going to become the norm.

I agree there was a noticeable quality improvement in the last three episodes (4-6), and I may be wrong, but I think it's reasonable to believe it's because the first three episodes had to be prepared in advance in order to be ready for the pre-screening that took place on the 8th of July in Japan. That may explain why the later episodes have been so much better compared to the first three: they simply had more time to work on them, and it's possible they're keeping working on the episodes even as they're airing. But I do agree... It's very saddening to see. Like of course, I agree, I *AM* happy the last episodes have been good (the last one was especially enjoyable!), but there really is that big ache given by thinking about what the Fukuchi vs. sskk fight could have been if only it was given the time and care it deserved. Sigh. It was just a very unfortunate coincidence for everyone, because, bias aside, it was really a pivotal moment in the whole manga... I mean. C'mon. Atsushi is the protagonist, but is yet again not treated as one because of, once again, marketing choices. It's a bit saddening. With season 4, I was dreading for when the season would have ended; with season 5 I regretfully must admit that I found myself again and again just hoping it would end already. Because even now that the animation has improved significantly, I can't stop thinking of what episode three should have been - what it had the right to be, as no less important than any other episode -, and I feel like my enjoyment of the season is just ruined.

One last note, and I know it's not what you meant when referring to panel-by-panel adaptations, and feel free to consider this my own pet peeve, but. Studios should be able to notice when they're working with the most iconic panel of the entire manga and should treat it accordingly. I'm cool and chill but what they did to the chapter 88 Akutagawa panel is unforgivable and I will resent them forever because of it.
