I'm actually a little worried over the fact that Bridgerton is gonna be the standard for period dramas nowadays, like, that's how period dramas are gonna look like (and I'm not even talking about the diversity part, I'd ve very happy with a show actually giving poc people the protagonism they deserve and not call it diversity and having the only White character to be the main character of the whole show) we have things like The Buccaneers and that horrible Emma film Netflix made and wonder if that's the quality we are gonna have now
Mr Malcom's List was amazing, I love everything about that film, it was so well done
Honestly? I'm not that worried about it. Period dramas have always been hit or miss for me, and I think that while big hits always have an impact on their genres, they often don't have as massive an impact as we may think--because shows that try to follow them underperform, tastes change, and other big hits happen.
An example I'd think of is The Tudors, which... I'm not gonna lie to you. Like it or not, is probably one of the most impactful, if not THE most impactful period dramas we've seen in the past 20 years. It revived the idea of the high end period piece soap for an American audience--and it reminded people that period pieces don't have to be Masterpiece, BBC, ITV, whatever. They could be super sexy and super dramatic and super bloody. You didn't have to be a stickler for history.
That show got a lot of viewers and a lot of buzz--and honestly, it went a long way towards launching the careers of Henry Cavill and Nat Dormer. Showtime tried to replicate it with The Borgias, but obviously had much less success there. HOWEVER, I always think it's a little unfair that GoT gets credit for making period pieces hot again when a) it's not a period piece and you can tell its core audience doesn't associate it with those because of how much they talk about the dragons and the ice zombies and b) The Tudors had already stoked that flame, and then the general Tudor frenzy grabbed onto it, which is why Starz has been able to get mileage out of its PGregs/Tudor-general shows for so long. THOUGH! I hope the flopitude of their last Elizabeth show means they slow up.
You see other mini trends too--Vikings was a big hit, and because of that you got The Last Kingdom and its ilk and Vikings: Valhalla. Vikings really was nothing like The Tudors, aside from the fact that it had somewhat explicit sex for its network (nothing like The Tudors, but still) and centered on a piece of shit who treated women like garbage and needed!!! Sons!!!!!!!! It walked through a door I think The Tudors left open, but it wasn't as clear a followup as The Borgias or the PGregs shows were.
So while I think Bton is obviously having an impact, as seen with Buccs, I'm not worried about its long term impact. I HOPE we see more diverse period dramas continue to be a thing, though I feel that really is less a thing we can thank Bton for (see: Mr. Malcolm's List) and more a trajectory that was brewing already. I mean, Shondaland had technically already done it with Still Star-Crossed, a show I didn't like... at all. But it was diverse.
I mean, shows like Mary and George on the horizon are nothing like Bton and hopefully (if they're good) will have an impact. I think we're slooooowly seeing the rise in more explicit, less woebegone period dramas (not movies) centering queer people. Gentleman Jack got cancelled, obviously, but I think it still made strides on that front, and Mary and George will obviously be very queer but also very much not a "sad queer man is closeted and sympathetic but doomed" narrative. We haven't seen many shows depict a man actually using his sexuality to get ahead the way women are often depicted doing in shows like The Tudors--and at his mother's urging, versus his father's as is usually the case with a narrative like Anne Boleyn's.
Things just come and go in waves. I mean, watch The Artful Dodger if you're super worried about more romantic period dramas, it was so fucking refreshing. I do kind of wonder if the romance in that show was upped BECAUSE Bton had success, but it's so much better than anything they offered, all the while focused on a period of history we never see in international TV (1800s Australia), doing a fun little revamp of a classic story (Oliver Twist), with a diverse cast and a focus on like... medicine? But medicine in a way that feels less procedural and more narrative? Medicine and THEFT? Medicine and Theft and Kissing? And putting a salve on her inner thigh and blowing on it in an alley? And sexual tension during medical exams? (The 30 seconds of Jack and Belle tensing while he sits behind her and listens to her heartbeat in her darkened room after she strips out of her dress is better than anything Bton offered in two seasons.)
And additionally--if books are any indication, I actually don't know that Bton is having that big an effect. Historical romances are going through a slump right now; the most Bton has done is push Julia Quinn's books and offer a "if you like Bton" comp for some books, which...
Yes, Buccs got renewed, but I don't know that it... has had much of an impact? I don't see it mentioned much on social media, which could be my circles, but I also don't see it mentioned much on sites that normally push streaming shows, so. I don't know. I've yet to see a Bton acolyte (and there have been few) actually make an impact and stick around the way some of the Tudor spawns did, or the way shows that followed Vikings did, for that matter.

A few angsty Rocketman scenes that I think of a lot 1) when he’s on the phone to his mum, The way his chin wobbles and his eyes,, I can’t. 2) After John hits him later in that scene he covers the bruises up and gets ready to get on stage, he puts his glasses on and smiles in the mirror. 3) Right before he performs at the Dodger Stadium when he puts his ‘it’s showtime smile’ on. What are a few scenes that stand out for you? Doesn’t have to be sad/angsty I’m just in a mood lol -😩
Okay. Okay. First off, I have this thing with Rocketman where it’s pretty much the only movie I want to watch all the time but I have a sincere worry that I’ll get tired of it. After watching it again the other night, I can confirm that that will ever happen. My goodness, it is so good.
Now that I have that off my chest… ugh every one you mentioned is so incredible and each of them really do stay with me. The look at John as he walks away after striking Elton? That shock and fear in Elton’s eyes is nothing sort of awful.
Tumblr media
Or just the way he’s too scared to meet his eye before John walks away? Also, I can’t get over how this is shot, how imposing John is here. Wow.
Tumblr media
One that always really gets me is when Elton meets up with his dad again and there’s this second he thinks his dad is going to hug him so he starts to move close and then realizes he’s not, and that sort of sets the tone for the interaction that follows and how awkward and unwanted Elton feels. He’s desperate for his dad’s approval, for some glimmer of love and affection now that he’s made something of himself and can buy his dad gifts, but his father doesn’t say ‘thank you’ or ‘I’m proud of you’ or ‘I love you’, the only things Elton wants to hear. It’s absolutely gut-wrenching watching that hope fade from Elton’s eyes the longer the conversation goes on and having to watch his dad interact so kindly and lovingly with his other sons, either completely ignorant of how it’s hurting Elton or doing it on purpose. And then the moment Elton, now many years older than when that happened, breaks down and throws his chair because that hurt is still so raw? That pain that’s so clear in his eyes…

Goodness.
I could truly go on for hours detailing scenes that I love and why (and I will, but not here) but I’ll just add one more, something that I only realized when I watched the other night: when Elton returns home from the restaurant after Bernie left him and Elton slumps onto the stairs, when he says, “You idiot”, I’d always assumed he was talking to/about Bernie. But finally I realized he’s talking to himself. Yes, he goes on to justify himself—“Bernie betrayed me. Everyone does.”—but I think when he’s on the stairs, really feeling the gnawing reality of how he may have pushed Bernie too hard this time and he might not return, he puts the blame squarely on his own shoulders.
Tumblr media
Bernie hadn’t said anything intentionally hurtful but Elton made sure everything he said would hurt Bernie. And that regret sent him down a very dark road—even darker than the road he was already on.
Thank you for your message, sweetie! Hope I didn’t bore you!
(I’m literally clamping a hand over my proverbial mouth to not go down the dark WHY DIDN’T TARON GET MORE RECOGNITION FOR THIS ROLE road myself)

*Narratives In Regard to Experience*
While reading the “Narratives” article by Palczewski, the concept of how one remembers events became extremely interesting. Before reading, I personally never stopped to wonder why certain memories from the past are seemingly more vivid than others. This artifact taught me about the differences in memories or stories, and even went in depth about why some memories stick vs others. Not only were memories brought into question, but pieces of U.S. history were used as examples to exhibit how rhetorical tools are used in different situations and forms. The story of Jackie Robinson becoming an extremely successful African American athlete was portrayed various ways by the media.  In some articles pathos was used to pity him based on the names he was called, and the hardships he oftentimes faced.  While other articles referred to him as an average baseball player, who only was popular because of his color. In both ways, his hardships are mentioned, but regarder in two very different senses.  Reporters oftentimes have a way of utilizing their rhetoric to get readers to see a situation very one sided.
Throughout U.S culture, this artifact is an example of not only how narratives can be portrayed differently by people with different beliefs, but it also forms an ideology around the culture of the U.S through sports. To investigate further, I watched a YouTube highlight of Jackie Robinson’s critics post game and thoroughly analyzed the “Rhetorical Criticism” artifact. To my surprise, it seemed as if both reporters praised Robinson for his positive contributions to his team, while also using degrading rhetoric to categorize him. It seemed as if they were claiming him as an accomplished American sports player, but also grouping him as a lower class citizen.
The YouTube video I decided to include as my artifact, was a scene where Ben Chapman- another MLB player, was highlighted for antagonizing Jackie Robinson throughout the game. The follow up game comments included the disrespectful rhetoric Chapman used to address Robinson, and the reports seemingly concluded their showtime with a mixed attitude of embarrassment but a sense of them not being shocked. In “Rhetorical Criticism”, Foss states that to achieve the American dream one will have to endure “hard work [that] will lead to success regardless of a person’s origin” (Foss, 117). This ideology supports my thoughts on why Ben Chapman accepted Robinson as an accomplished player, but still degraded him. Chapman congratulated his hard work and success regardless of his origin, but still treated him as an outsider.
The narrative told by the reporters deemed that Jackie Robinson was exceptional in the game against the Dodgers, while having to deal with the norms of the society he lived in. Norms including being called degrading names and having to accept the fact that he could not fight against any of the white players. The narrative told by Ben Chapman however would be different. Ben Chapman spoke about how he acted as anyone would and should towards the Negro player, as he still congradulated Robinson on his stellar performace. Chapman had no sense of wrongdoing, as this was a time where everyone accepted Robinson as competition, but not as a person.
In regards to the speech Geraldine Ferraro voiced, she regarded the American dream as a saying that included all people, all races. She made the “promise [that] the rules are fair” throughout the U.S, and through the American dream “our faith can shape a better future” (Ferraro, 117). Instead of speaking on where our country was morally, she decided that in light of her potentially winning the Democratic nomination for vice presidency, it would be best to overlook the reality. The advantages to her grouping all Americans as one would essentially make her seem far and righteous in the name of America. The rhetoric used was to make all feel as though they were welcome. She included the ideology of the American dream because that’s what American’s strived to immulate. Through her tactics, people like Ben Chapman would have either wanted to vote for her to work towards achieving that dream, or saw through the unity she was trying to speak on.
As stated in “The Power in a Political Narrative”, written by Henry Tolchart explains that “when narratives are in conflict, their importance is amplified” (Tolchart). The conflict in America when Geraldine Ferraro was running for office was between African American and White Americans. She seemingly excluded the present narrative at the time, and skipped to the conclusion. The importance of segregation at the time was at a high, and she used the American dream to bring both parties together.
In conclusion, narratives are told by everyone, and oftentimes utilized to sway a conflict. Convincing rhetoric within the narrative is important in changing mindset. Narrative is also different based on different experiences. For example, Jackie Robinson would have a different narrative of how he was treated while achieving history as opposed to Ben Chapman. Different viewpoints always start the beginnings of the same story told in different ways.
