No because I seriously think about Hunter joining the Hexsquad during season one all the time. Just… randomly being apart of their hijinks. He has no reason to be there and he won’t admit that they’re friends but sure he’ll tag along to Grom with everyone. Running commentary with Gus on the sidelines during the grudgby game. Awkwardly pretending he doesn’t know Luz and Willow and Gus at the end of S1. Joining them afterwards because he’s pitted against Belos when Eda was almost killed, and hey he has a support system now, so he leaves (unrealistic I know). Enrolling at hexside at the beginning of S2 and ONE WEEK in he gets expelled and he’s just like “are you fucking with me right now.” I think about this so much.
"ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME RIGHT NOW" THIS IS SO FUNNY, Odalia fucking nerfed him right out of the gate.
But okay okay what if. what if.
AU where everything is the same except after Luz enrolls in Hexside the Golden Guard is stationed at the school to keep an eye on her. (Belos is very interested in the Human's presence on the Isles.) There's obviously some cover story about monitoring the staff and student body for legal magic usage but Luz is absolutely his main priority.
But it's like. This job is so fucking boring. He can't just follow Luz from class to class without arousing suspicion and Bump requested that he sit in on less classes because he has a tendency open his mouth and just completely take over the lesson from the teacher and there have been a lot of complaints from the staff about him. So he's mostly resigned to slinking around the hallways and the courtyard.
But like. EVENTUALLY, he starts having these short casual interactions with Luz, and by extension the people she surrounds herself with. Just cuz he gets bored and there's nothing suspicious about a little chitchat. And at first Willow and Gus are starstruck and Amity tries to impress him, hoping he'll send a good word to the Emperor’s Coven about her. But after a while they just. Get used to his presence. While he starts magnetizing towards them more and more. He'll occasionally drop in on the four of them gathered around the stairs and be like "sup" and they're like "oh hey GG, do you want half of my sandwich?"
They still never see his face, they still never learn his name and it is ABSOLUTELY seperate Tides era GG!Hunter that we're dealing with here. The one who's got all this cockiness and bravado that comes from the mask. He's hanging around for most season 1 adventures that are hexside related. He goes to grom with them, he sticks around for the whole grudgby thing etc. If you asked Luz, Amity, Willow and Gus about it they'd be like "yeah he's our buddy :)"
Hunter, meanwhile, SWEARS that he only hangs out with them due to boredom. He thinks they're alright but he doesn't have any special attachment to any of them. But unfortunately, he is Hunter who has a tendency to become ride-or-die towards anyone who is nice to him. However, the beauty of the mask and uniform is that it makes him a lot better at hiding most of his emotions. He's air of indifference towards them is extremely convincing.
But also Hunter is still deeply linked to Belos and due to his relationship with the other kids not being exactly intimate, he still doesn't really have the strength (or the desire) to break away from his Coven. So he is still very firmly on the Emperor's side.
The fucking. Petrification of Eda incident.
Scout: Sir, there are some kids in town spouting anti-monarchist speech to a crowd
Hunter: What kind of idiots would do that?
*heads into town to find Willow and Gus up on a stage*
Hunter: OH NO THOSE ARE MY IDIOTS
And then. After Lilith is branded as a traitor, Hunter is promoted to Coven Head. So he's removed from his hexside duty because he now has more pressing matters to deal with. But it puts a bit of a rift between his relationship with Luz and the others, as Hunter is still fundamentally loyal to Belos and he takes his new position very seriously.
The events of Seperate Tides still happens, the only difference being that Luz is like "What the heck, man?? I thought we were friends??"
"You thought wrong :)"
All the other Hunter centric episodes happen, there's just an added familiarity between him and the other kids, making his actions against them way more personal.

Poly! Mikaelson (including Finn & Freya please) (headcanon and/or oneshot) where their precious soulmate is a 6-year-old who they met when they were out to get an enemy and she witnessed the killing and Mikaelson thought they screwed up and you would be scared of them but the thing is the reader was a little thankful (not that she would show it to the Mikaelsons) that they killed the enemies off because they would use her and the Mikaelsons being all lovey dovey and their life afterward
Yes and yes we are doing a blurb on how they found the soul mate and headcanons of just Fluff and the relationship
Warnings: Fluff, violence, blood, Protective Mikaelsons,
You were being lead to a room by two vampires as you were taken by these vampires because you could see the future and look into people's past. You were the last witch of your coven as the vampires had slaughtered your coven learning of your gift
You could feel how angry your soul mates were as they could feel when ever the vampires hurt you. You were sat on a chair and told to see if the vampires could take out the Mikaelsons, your soul mates.
"Sir! They are he......" a vampire was cut off when his heart was torn out snapped you out of doing your magic seeing the Mikaelsons. You flinched feeling blood spatter on your cheek when a vampire in front of you dropped dead and Finn stood in front of you worried he scared you.
"Thank you for saving me." You say quietly with a soft smile on your face as Elijah walked over frowning. Elijah crouch down pulling out a handkerchief wiping your cheek as your soul hearts glowed softly.
"Our soul mate is a bit young."
"Kol, the marks are platonic." Elijah said finish cleaning you up and was surprised when you hugged him. They took you home having you under their care not trusting the covers.
Elijah, Finn, Freya and Rebekah are the softest with you while Klaus and Kol are the most protective
Kol and Rebekah taking you on little road trips for the day
Freya taking you to met Vincent to help with your magic
You asking Elijah to help make a little coven made up of you, Freya, and Davina
Finn carrying you on his shoulders when going to the witch's market with Freya
Klaus showing you how to paint when he learns it soothes you
Rebekah dressing you up
"Little one, what are you doing?" "Helping Kol bury his hopes and dreams." Cue Elijah get the family together to talk to Kol
Klaus and Kol glaring at boys around your age when invited to a classmates birthday party
"This is my emotional support little witch." Freya tells Vincent when cuddling you
"Niklaus, you can't buy out a hold toy store because Hope and Y/N wantedyou to!" "I can and I will Elijah!"
"Yeah, I murdered that guy but he tried taking Y/N." "Ah well I won't tell Elijah, Bex."
You only sleeping on Elijah, Finn or Klaus
Freya, Rebekah or Kol gets cuddles
You rarely sleeping in your own bed
Elijah and Finn just reading with you or playing music with you
Klaus and you having little secret days out which ends with you being carried back home
"You know when she gets older she'll have a romantic soulmate and won't be around anymore." "Shut up Hayley!"
They are more clingy after the talk with Hayley
You and Kol just hiding away somewhere away from the family
Freya teaching you new spells
Finn helping you with a little garden you made
Rebekah helping you buy surprise gifts for the others something you started doing the first of every month
Elijah just sitting and holding you for lazy Sunday afternoons
Klaus taking you out on wolf runs when he learns it is your favorite animal
Freya and you baking together
"But we already have an angel for the tree." "Kol, you are not going to place Y/N on top of the tree."
Making Christmas cookies with Freya and Finn
"I got a part in my Christmas pageant!" "Every good, little witch."
These people are in the front row cheering whenever you were on stage
"Karen, you are just jealous your daughter sucks at ballet." "Kol, stop picking fights with moms."
You have never felt so loved and protected than from them
"Always and Forever, little witch." "Always and Forever."

Requested a while ago. Never tried to write for him until now....
"I've Heard Stories"
John-117 (Master Chief) x Female! Reader
Synopsis: You are a Spartan-IV sent on a mission with John-117 himself. You've heard stories of the Spartan-II in many other missions, such as fighting fleets of covenant alone. You've even heard rumors of what Spartan-IIs went through compared to Spartan-IVs. You knew not to get on his bad side, but you also couldn't help but admire him.
Content Warning/Note: Maybe some spoilers for Master Chief's past? This does not take place in any specific game. Slight Angst (?) No real romantic connection, more or less just you trying to understand and respect John, although it's implied. I just let my mind ramble for this 😅 Spartan-II/Spartan-IV generation gap?
Tumblr media
To be a Spartan-IV wasn't easy. It was a role you had to learn and earn. Despite this, even you knew you had nothing on Spartan-II.
You were one of the newest sets of Spartan. Yet, Chief, was one of the first. Being near the veteran was both fascinating, yet unnerving.
If there was one thing you were sure about, it was that this mission was getting done.
From what you've heard any mission the Chief was on was accomplished skillfully.
Maybe that's why you found him endearing, almost....
You looked up to him in a way. Master Chief was humanity's beacon of hope. Someone you could only aspire to be. You respected him.
You also...sympathized with him.
Spartan-IIs were the first to be trained. Taken from their families to become a machine meant for murder and death against unknown threats.
Spartans were meant to be humanity's weapon.
While you, as a Spartan-IV, had chosen to serve as said weapon.
Chief hadn't.
He had been bred to win, he had been raised to fight.
You couldn't fathom what he's seen.
"Hostiles, on our right!" You warn, aiming down your weapon.
"Stay in cover!" Chief calls, you and the mix of Spartans and Marines obeyed and listened to his orders.
You wished you could offer some sort of support for the fellow Spartan. Yet you weren't sure if you would even get a chance.
Chief, was raised to kill and emote as little as possible. Trying to reach out and speak with him seemed as though it would get you nowhere unless you were Blue Team.
So, for now, you decided to show your respect in the form of combat. You vowed to yourself that you'd fight for him. If you could help just a little, you were content.
"This way." Chief gestures, urging you to follow with a group of Marines. You needed to clear the area so the main group needed to split up.
"Understood, sir!" You confirm on your display, following the green suited Spartan.
The current area is cleared enough for everyone to breathe, but it would only be a matter of time before there would be more.
"It's an honor to work with you, sir." You comment softly, keeping pace with the better experienced soldier. Chief glances towards you. "I've heard stories about your triumphs."
"Triumphs?" He answers, looking back ahead to see if any hostiles had come into sight.
"Of course. I'm pretty sure only you could take on Covenant in hoards alone. It's courageous, really."
"I'm just doing what I've been born to do." Chief answers. You frown inside your helmet.
Born to do....
"I'm sorry...." Chief looks at you again briefly. "I've...only heard what Spartan-IIs have gone through. I can't even imagine such..." You trail off, clearing your throat.
Chief doesn't answer you for a moment. You feel as though you said the wrong thing. Nervously you fixate to what's in front of you in search of enemies.
Maybe a firefight can cut the tension....
"...That's not important." Chief doesn't seem upset or angry, just...distant.
You take a deep breath.
"I know...but...how can one person suffer so much alone?" You feel as though you're pushing your place.
"It's not of your concern." Chief continues. "Humanity is more important."
You decide to drop the conversation.
"Alright... I stepped out of line, sir. Just...know I won't just fight for humanity."
You check your rifle.
"I'll fight for you, too."
Chief's visor didn't leave your direction.
"...Why?"
You look briefly to the other Spartan.
"...I respect you."
With that, you continue your mission.
It was best that you didn't push yourself to understand Chief too hard.
There are some things you'll just never understand about Spartan-IIs
There are some things you'll just never understand about him

Any Way The Wind Blows SPOILERS
Okay. Here are my ramblings in no particular order. Proceed if you care and/or dare. They a lot.
- I am emo shit. (I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. Brilliant.)
- Honestly the ‘break up’ is important even though it HURTS
- Holding the wand together. I CRY. Knocking foreheads. STAP.
-The first real snowbaz conversation during the make-up. Was just …......… FAN-TAST-TIC. Just real conversation and being patient and listening. Like they were both being so SOFT and UGH!
- Fuck yes the emotional intimacy!
- The first night in bed… like simons trauma and love and how they interact and how he can’t cross the lines right away but wants to and he’s just trying to process NEVER having to ever make a decision for himself and think about his own emotions in his life. Boy thought he was never gonna grow up. He thought he was gonna be dead! UGH. He just. Can’t handle the emotions and I FUCKING RELATE!
- SNOWBAZ MAKING OUT. GIMME MORE.
- Snowbaz hunting that first time and the conversation about simons sexuality (no label!) and further talking about how Simon thought (but really never thought!) about his relationship with Agatha
- The fact Simon wanted to JUMP ON baz and never thought past that
- Simon telling baz he would let him drink him. Yup. Good boy. Good bois.
- The mutual OBSESSION they have for each other!
- NANDOS! Yes sir.
- Penny and Shepard. Penny and Shepard. Penny and Shepard.
- Penelope deserves SO much. She is such an amazing friend/family to Simon AND to baz. Ugh their LOVE for each other.
- I think Shepard is v good for her
- YES bitch get him out of that engagement!
- Shep reaching slowly for penny and then penny just moving his hand to reach her cheek. I CAN NOT!
- KISS HIM! You go Penny! GET. IT.
- DOMESTIC SNOWBAZ DOMESTIC SNOWBAZ DOMESTIC SNOWBAZ
- IKEA trip. Just get out. That’s my dream for them.

Uhuh dat me’ … ya fuckin’ knob. You aren’t it Smith!
- ALSO WOAH WOAH WOAH! On the MF SLY Nico (good for Fiona. Marry your angry boy. You deserve it. Whatever it is.) being like ‘you can’t be immortal only drinking animals’………………

- Beautiful addition with the Excalibur sword to give us the Simon Salisbury reveal. Just Beautiful. Thank you thank you thank you Rainbow. I think that is exactly as we need it. Like obviously a lot for Simon to work through. And he and baz LITERALLY have that conversation (‘it’s too much.’ ‘It would be too much for anyone’) I REALLY appreciate that scenario as the reveal. Like Ruth already knows all the important things about Simon and now they can just be a supportive and CONSISTENT presence in his life. BAWLING IM BAWLING.
- And Simon has his sword!!!! Yes boy! You look good with it! Baz thinks you’re Hot! Because you ARE!
- THESE BOYS ARE HANDSOME! WE ALL WISH!
- Okay but also the moment it hits Simon (and baz) that he killed his father…… noooooooo. POOR THING. (Crying real tears. Crying real tears in the park reading. It’s true.)
- HE WAS NEVER YOUR FATHER SIMON! NOT REALLY!
- ROSEBUD BOY!
- Yes that is the pet name and henceforth will be the ONLY pet name! (Actually baz should keep saying love because I SWOON)
- my thoughts are Simon is gonna keep his wings.
- Like he likes them and so does baz and honestly everyone does. I actually love that every time anyone who is important to Simon thinks about him without his wings they get a bit sad about it.
- I think he’ll keep them.
- I like that they left things with the nownext like….. those Vegas vamps will probably fucking kill them, let’s not get involved. And then literally didn’t talk about it. HA. (Fair enough. Not their problem.)
- Our baby’s get normal lives now!
- Like normal for them
- But they get to GO ON! ITS AMAZING!
- AH IM SO HAPPY FOR THEM!
- HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY
- Penny and shep are getting his passport and moving to LONDON! They gone be cute cute cute together and it’s LOVELY
- SIMON AND BAZ LIVING TOGETHER FOREVER!
- MY BOYS (crying crying crying crying crying)
- I can just picture Simon doing Sunday night dinners at the Salisbury’s and coming home with HEAPS of take home leftovers for his week because grandmother Salisbury would NEVER let him leave without it
- He’s got an uncle! And probably/maybe cousins!? Sweet baby aaaaaahhhhhhh!
- Daphne at home again. THANK HEAVENS!
- I really enjoy that baz calls her mum. I think it’s so soft and important on so many levels because she did raise him.
- BAZ DRESSING SIMON! COME. ON.
- I CANT HANDLE ALL THIS BOYFRIEND BEHAVIOUR THAT I AM CONSUMING! IT. IS. PERFECT. I AM EATING IT UP.
- every time each of them comments on how sexy the other is.
- Simon thinking about Baz keeping his wand in a holster on his wrist. And it being dead sexy without his shirt on. FUCK. ME.
- Okay okay okay but MORE physical intimacy!!!!
- Like Clothes. Get rid of em. Don’t need em. Confident with where things are going. Check. Communicating consent and checking in. Fuck yes check. Sexy sexy sexy. Check. Kissing kissing kissing. Check. (I’m dying just about here) (get it my sons)
- What does Simon say? Just like ‘do you trust me’ ‘yes’ ‘can I touch you’ ‘yes’
- I. HAVE. DIED.
- (I’m dead)
- (Me being dead) AAAAAHHHH
- I LOVE the on going ‘is this what people do?’
- That makes me feel so many things.
- FUCK
- Simons like ‘we just get to keeping trying and working and being close and trying and working and making each other happy’
- I WEEP!
- These. Boys. Have. My. Heart.
- They have it they have it they have it they have it
- UGH
- okay better leave it there. I need to READ. THIS. AGAIN.

Jim and Sylvia Come to Volunteer
2/17/2018
   I had a beautiful couple come to volunteer with us at our Sat. afternoon dinner guest program. They were from Northbrook Evangelical Covenant Church in Northbrook, IL. I had met them last month, and now they were happy to return again. Their first names really struck a chord with me. Jim and Sylvia. For these were the names of my mother and father.
   "What did you say, your names were?" was my immediate reaction.
   They calmly repeated their names.
   "Wow, that was both my parent's names," I told them.
   "Oh well, that is quite interesting," they said.
   "Yeah, cause you know you don't hear the name Sylvia, much any more," I said. "It's kind of an "old school" name it seems."
   They both readily agreed, and they had a great time serving. They had even bought a copy of "Discovering Jesus...." And now the Martins were back once again.
   And so we started in talking once again. "You know, Chris, we read your book, and we really liked it," said Sylvia. "We were especially were touched by "The Rainbow Story.""
  "Oh, yeah, that was quite remarkable, wasn't it?" I said.
   Sylvia went on then to tell how they knew Dave and Jean Larsen, who also attended their church. Dave was the brother of Paul Larsen, a former President of the ECC, and long-time supporter of JPUSA and Cornerstone, and the proud father of his daughter, Kathleen.
   And they, the Martins, had showed the story to them and they reported that Jean had said, "Yeah, that's how it all happened."
   You see, Jean Larsen, had been in attendance at this CCO playground dedication in honor of Kathleen Keri Larsen, her niece, who had unexpectedly passed away a few years earlier.
   So here's the story as it appears in the book:
  The Rainbow Story
   Kathleen Keri Larsen was the daughter of Paul and Liz Larsen, a couple of steadfast supporters of the work and outreach of CCO. Paul was the former President of the Evangelical Covenant Church, and a long-standing friend of JPUSA. His daughter had volunteered at CCO, and her favorite act of service was playing and interacting with the children of the shelter.
   In 1996, 27-year-old Kathleen’s life was unexpectedly cut short. Her parents were devastated.
   In the months that followed Kathleen’s death, Paul and Liz found great comfort in catching sight of numerous rainbows. These rainbows spoke to their grieving hearts of the covenant promise God had made to Noah (Genesis 9:16). To them, God was telling them that Kathleen was alright, that she was in his care.
  The Larsen’s chose to honor their daughter’s life by setting up a memorial fund that would build a roof-top playground at CCO. The playground itself would be dedicated to her memory.
   The day came for the memorial and dedication service. The air was filled with mixed emotions—sadness for the loss of Kathleen, but also joy, knowing that she would be happy for the kids who pass through CCO.
   The service was beautiful, and included a close friend of Liz Larsen. This friend shared with the crowd that Paul and Liz had been comforted by the sights of various rainbows throughout the past few months.
   The mood was somber as JPUSA Pastor Neil Taylor, who was leading this service, continued speaking. Suddenly a young CCO boy blurted out, “Well, there’s your rainbow.” He was pointing to a small but very distinct inverted rainbow shining in the skies.
   Everyone looked up to see this rainbow and a hush fell over the crowd. Everyone just stopped for a minute or two, pondering what it was they were witnessing. And then it just vanished.
   No one could really put into words what they were feeling. But words weren’t necessary to explain the tears—of both grief and comfort—that were shed by Paul and Liz Larsen.
   Everyone in attendance knew that they had just witnessed something extraordinary. And what a blessing it was to simply be in the crowd!
   A North Park University Professor and close friend of the family, Klyne Snodgrass, was in attendance at the service. When he got home, he called the National Weather Service in Chicago. He asked if they had seen a small, inverted rainbow appear for a few, brief minutes at the time the service was taking place.
   The answer he received was that, “Yes sir, we certainly did.”
   The weather bureau explained that the rainbow was actually a “circumzenithal arc.” And according to Wikipedia, “the Circumzenithal Arc has been called a ‘smile in the sky,’ its first impression being that of an upside-down rainbow. It is rarely noticed, however, because it occurs so far overhead.”
   So, was this a “God-thing”? That, of course, is a matter of opinion. But I’m not surprised that God showed up in such a spectacular way. He was merely affirming his deep affection for Kathleen, Paul and Liz, and their love and service to the least.
Thanks for stopping by.

FFXV Scenarios - Ignis/Retainer!Reader (pt. ii)
i / ii /iii
Bumpy road trip is finally a go, folks! Seeing how big of an idea this is to me, there is definitely going to be a couple more parts to this and maybe even a drabble or two in the future?? We’ll see how it goes  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
These points cover Chapters 1-6 of the game so if you don’t want to spoil yourself too much just remember to keep that in mind while you read this.
For now, please enjoy!
All is well for the first few hours, you’re smushed between Gladio and Noctis in the back while Ignis and Prompto are in the front.  “Nice driving, Prompto! Keep up the good work!”  “Awww thanks (Y/N) you’re too ki- what’s that sound??”
You don’t want to say that Ignis is giving you a look but he’s giving you the look for your impeccable timing and you’re pushing the car along with the others. Gladio asks why you aren’t in the driver’s seat, keeping the car in line and you reply that it’s better if Ignis does it. Who knows what else could happen with both you and Prompto in this magical trip.
You’re trying your best not to get distracted by the sights around because this is probably the first or third time you’ve been out of Insomnia, and there’s just so many great landscapes that you want to take in and maybe take pictures of with your phone. You’re very tempted to let the others do the heavy pushing, but you know that Prompto and Noctis are probably thinking of letting Gladio do it all by himself so you push through it.
“Why does your family have black as its official color. I’m dying in my fatigues here.”  “Don’t ask me, ask my ancestors.”  “Fuck your ancestors for wanting to be edgy, but thank the Six that they have you and your dad.”
Oh, look, civilization! You want to fall to the ground and maybe promise Cindy your first-born for fixing up the Regalia and- How much are the repairs you say?? What’s a gil?
Ignis insists that you stay with the car while he and the boys get the funds they need to pay for the repairs but you insist back that you can be of use. Another majority rules are enacted and you’re running around trying to be helpful.
Trying being the keyword here. Training with some of the Crownsguard is not the same as fighting varmints and you become aware of that immediately. It doesn’t help that you’re having a hard time with your rifle at close range and almost passed out a few times beside Prompto.
You can feel the prince’s advisor-to-be’s stare at your back and it is not helping you concentrate on the fight. Gladio told you not to let it mess with you and reassures you that you’re doing fine, this is a change of pace for you so you won’t get it right the first time.
Ignis is just worried that this is too much for you and you won’t be able to fulfill your job. It certainly looked like that when you were pinned down and he had to save you
Your mistakes began to pile up until you reach Galdin Quay, and at this point you accept the menial tasks such as car-sitting, fixing up camp (you are NOT to touch anything involving the stove) and other things Ignis assigned you to do. Noctis tries to get you back into going into hunts with them but you tell him that it’s fine, that fighting wasn’t even your job in the first place.  “Family stuff, you know? I wasn’t meant to fight.”  “But you’re a great shot, (Y/N)! You just need practice and-!”  “Your Highness. Please just... Stop... It’s okay.”  It hurts that you used his title, so he keeps quiet about it for now.
Does Ignis feel bad about this? He does because he knows you work so hard to make up for your mistakes by putting 10x the effort you did before for the past few years he’s known you, but for now it’s strategically not enough for Noctis’ safety and yours as well.
He makes the mistake of you telling you the last part first which results in you cutting him off before he tells you the rest of his thoughts and say ‘I get it. Thank you for your honesty, Scientia, sir’ and walk away to compose yourself before you start crying in front of the one person you’re trying your best to prove yourself to. Specs isn’t really sure how to go about this and goes his way, wondering how to make it up to you.
How’s he going to trust you if you’re not enough? You want to tell Prompto this when he joins you during your turn on watch, but you don’t want to stack your own insecurities on his so the two of you play King’s Knight together until it’s Gladio’s turn to be the lookout.
Speaking of stacking, hearing about the attack on Insomnia felt like an arrow to the chest. Was your family alright? Did they manage to make it out of the city before it got really bad? This sent you in an overwhelming state of panic when paired with your already high emotions.
It took seeing Noctis’ distressed expression when he found out his father died to finally set a fire in you. While Ignis and Gladio were telling him to pull through, albeit in their own ways, and Prompto tried to keep his spirits up, you were the one he could honestly talk to when they had a moment to catch their breath searching for the first Royal Arm (You insisted on coming along just for Noctis and promised to stay out of the fight, unless necessary)
It hit you just how important your job was not just for the new king, but for your friend. He chose you which said a lot. It meant that at least he thought you were worth the trouble and that jump started your renewed dedication to protect him alongside the others.
Ignis noticed a new look in your eyes after all five of you and Cor took down the Niff base, where you proved yourself by taking out MTs on the high ground take that Anakin! I mean with your rifle and defending yourself with your lance.
The Marshal actually complimented you on the hard shots you had to make while they fought. Flustered beyond belief because whoa this man is like, the best of the best in the Crownsguard, you managed a thank you and asked for some pointers before he left to his own business.
Cue the teasing and some compliments from the boys, except the strategist who remained  silent for a while. “He was totally checking you out (Y/N).”  “Shut it, Gladio. The guy’s old enough to be my dad and I’m not into that.”  “That was the best shooting I’ve ever seen you do (Y/N)! Let’s train sometime!”  “It.. was probably just a fluke, Prompt. Plus, it was a team effort under the Marshal’s orders.”  “... I’m good at giving orders too...”  “Huh? What was that?”  “Nothing.”
Welcome to Lestallum! After meeting up with Iris, you decide to continue to stay and look after the younger Amicitia while the boys go to the Disc. This surprises them, especially after that base infiltration. You tell them that it’s for best that there aren’t too many of them going to the Archaean and that you’ll only get in the way Not to mention you didn't like the odd man with the funny hat, he gave you the creeps
Ignis feels somewhat... offended??? Now that he’s seen what potential you had, did you not trust him to look out for you in a fight? He couldn’t have been that bad could he? He doesn’t voice this outloud, but you and the others can tell something was up when he was being short with you when you saw them off. You tried your best to brush it off, but it did hurt some.
You knew that this was going to take them a while, so what do you do to pass the time? Go on hunts by yourself and have Iris cover you just in case of course! The Marshal’s advice for you was to learn how to defend yourself before you could even hope to do the same for others. This was your own personal quest of growth, and Iris, Talcott, and Jared wished you luck.
It’s tough and scary at first, you decide to take the first few hunts with some hunters who were willing to help you out before going off on your own. You start to further develop your fighting style and you feel great! You can actually take on a few monsters yourself!
These hunts don’t take you too far from Lestallum so you come back in what you thought was a good  time before the prince and the rest return since you heard that the Archaen disappeared. You’re excited to tell Iris and Talcott about your adventures, how you can actually cook something now and-    What do you mean they’re stranded? How the hell did they end up all the way in a chocobo farm?? You’ve always wanted to go to a chocobo farm wtf guys??
This is the first time you’ve ever scolded Noctis, and the other three can hear you from his phone. The past few days of being around hunters gave you quite the confidence boost and the poor guy is a little confused but manages to reassure you that they’re fine and Cindy’s looking for the car and-     “Wait, you LOST the REGALIA??? HOW CAN YOU LOSE A CAR THAT BIG YOU LITTLE- That’s it! I’m helping you look for the car. Sit tight and look pretty.”  “(Y/N) wait! You can’t just-    ...Guys, they said they’re going to look for the car.”
Ignis sends you a strongly worded text to stay put in Lestallum since you refuse to answer your phone, but you reply with updates on the search instead. There’s a lengthy period where you don’t answer for a few days and he’s internally freaking out at this point. He’s doing his best to support Noctis as he formed a covenant with Ramuh, but the thought of you all by yourself out there... scares him. The others were worried as well, the prince especially, but Iggy’s worries seem to be on par with him looking out for Noct.
When Noct gets the call from Cindy that you saw the the Regalia in a Niflheim base he asked where you were.  “Not too sure... They were kinda in a rush when they called me ta let ya know where the Regalia is. Sounded real winded too. They told me ta let you boys know that they’re doing just fine and they’ll meet with ya in Lestallum.”
They book it to the base while your hands were full of fighting off MTs to keep away from Iris and Talcott. Jared died right in front of you and you were shamefully spared by the Niflheim commander that killed him. Hearing about death was one thing, but watching it happen before your eyes was something you’re not going to be able to shake off.
You’ve gained quite a collection of wounds and scars from hunts and brawling with Niffs, that the boys almost didn’t recognize you when they saw you sitting beside Iris. You let her break the news to them and when you saw Talcott, you hobbled out of the room to comfort him. If you couldn’t save Jared, you sure as hell were going to make sure that his grandson was going to be protected.
You’re more withdrawn during the ride to Caem. Since you, Iris, and Talcott can’t all fit in the Regalia, you decided to take a motorcycle to trail the car. Better to have the younger ones in the car while you and Prompto took the rear.
While driving, Ignis can’t help but keep glancing at the rear view to make sure you were all right. You weren’t exactly in the best shape, what with the bruises on you and the way you limped after Talcott earlier. What have you been doing while they were away?
It isn’t until they’ve spotted an Imperial base with the very man who killed Jared that you started to talk again. It scared them how different you are since they left you. Gladio is a little more receptive to this new you but does try to get you the way you were. He knew that Noctis and Prompto weren't sure how to even start, and Ignis was busy planning how they were going to infiltrate the base. Sparring seemed to help you come back from that unfeeling state you were in.
Just because Specs was busy doesn’t mean that he wasn’t going to be worried about your well-being. He surprised you by asking about your thoughts on how they should approach the base.  “From one... retainer to another. Not to mention you’ve fought with them, yes? I would like your insight on that.”  “Oh, um... Of course, Scientia, sir.”  “Just Ignis is fine. We’re equals, are we not?”
You’re not sure if he’s aware how happy you feel at that moment, but you play it as cool as you can and planned out the attack alongside him. Little did you know that he already knew the answer to his question, he just needed to find a way to talk to you and this seemed to work out well. Plus, you had some great suggestions that helped him better develop his game plan.
Noctis decided to teach you how to warp with your lance since your primary weapon is best used when you’ve got a better view of the place. In comes your clumsiness once again, but this time you’ve learned to work with it and woooo are the boys impressed.  “Did Cor drop by Lestallum and train you or something, (Y/N)?”  “That would be really cool and yes, he kinda has something to do with it but uh...”  “... But...?”  “I’ve been, um, hunting. By myself.”  “Well, (Y/N), hunting’s a good skill to have out he  ”  “Not that kind of hunting. I meant the ones like Deadeye and Jumbo Flans.”
Of course Gladio and Prompto were very proud of you, look how much you’ve grown from where you started! Noctis gave you a nod of acknowledgement and a nudge on the shoulder, he always knew you could take care of yourself. You got an earful from Ignis but you knew he meant well. You’re not as tearful as you were before, giving him a smile instead.
You missed the look on his face from your smile when you turned away. It was as if he got struck by lightning, but without the spasms looking right at you, Noct
Capturing the Imperial base’s commander went rather smoothly until Aranea came in. While the four fought with her, you decided to go through avenging Jared and shot the commander down when he tried to slip away. You felt rather sick after his body fell, but you turned your attention back to the fight and kept the mercenary from landing her hits on Noctis in the air.
You felt more at peace now that you’ve avenged Jared and Ignis can see that. He started talking to you more, asking how you’re feeling and if you need help with anything. You’re not sure to respond to this and one day you tell him straight up that you can take care of yourself now. That you can protect Noctis and the rest of them too.  “So I’ve noticed (Y/N). You’ve become more capable than ever but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to worry any less than before. I’ve come to trust you a great deal now and... I want you to be able to put the same in me, despite what I’ve said in the past.”
Specs wasn't sure what your wide-eyed expression and silence is supposed to mean, so he clears his throat to get your attention. You blink a few times and finally let out this half-laugh, half-sob with the biggest smile you’ve ever made.  “Are you kidding me, Ignis? I trusted you then and still do to this day. With my life. I... don’t think you’d want to trust me that much.”
You start to ramble a bit, telling him how he basically motivated you to be better ever since Noctis made you his personal retainer and even though that one time he said you weren’t enough brought you down, it gave you something to work for.
Ignis was quick to clear up what he didn’t get to say back then, that he knew how hard you work and how amazed he is with how deep your dedication is to Noctis. He may have said what he said, but you were the one who took the steps to make it happen and because of that he trusts you to look out for him.  “... Heh, just you?”  “Wha- and the others as well of course. The point is, I trust you.”
He didn’t think your smile could get even bigger and brighter than when he first said he said those words, but he was quickly proven wrong.  “... I’ve always wanted to hear you say that to me. Thank you, Ignis. Please continue to trust me to look out for you.”
It’s a good thing Noctis called you over to play King’s Knight with him and Prompto, because Ignis.exe has stopped working after you told him that. Is that how much you’ve trusted him? Even after all those harsh words when he was younger and didn’t know better? How long have you looked up to him? Did you value his words even more than the prince’s? What??? What does mean??
It’s Gladio that immediately noticed a slight change between you and Ignis after all of you held a small memorial for Jared. It wasn’t anything obvious, but it’s how subtle it is that caught his eye. You aren’t as worried or tense as you used to be around Specs and he had more care in his voice whenever he spoke with you.
The big guy really wanted to see how this would go on, but he’s got a few things to take care of by himself...
Wooo that was very long, it’s less meme-y than the previous one but that’s mostly because I wanted this to grow more.
Stay tuned for part 3!

43 with penny x agatha?
You chose: falling in love with theirbest friend’s partner au.
Partner…in crime, right? (I’m sorry, I just couldn’t do it!*blubbery sounds of shame*) Watch Penny and Agatha fall in lurve in…
Double Agent, Double Date
“You are absolutely not allowed to come with me,” Baz said,emerging from the walk-in closet. He holds up two ties. “Blue, or green?”
“Why not?” Agatha whined from her blanket burrito in Baz’sbed. She’d just returned from a week in San Diego, and still hadn’t readjustedto London weather.
Baz turned and fixed her with a steely eye. “Because Simon isa normal person, Wellbelove. Do you understand what that means? Do you?”
Agatha shrugged. “That he pays taxes?”
“That he doesn’t have the tools to handle a narcissisticgrifter with the conscience of an old hat and the hair of a Disney princess.”
“He won’t even notice that I’m there.” Agatha fluttered hereyelashes in a way that had convinced many a millionaire to part with hismillions.
Baz merely sighed. “You are not, under any circumstances, toaccompany me on my date.” He held up both ties again. “Blue, or green?”
“…blue,” Agatha said sulkily. “And the grey shirt.”
“Thank you.” Baz set down both ties and picked Agatha up,blanket burrito and all. Agatha shrieked, fighting to get an arm out, butcouldn’t free herself before Baz dumped her on the living room sofa. “I expectyou to put that duvet back where it came from,” he said, and strode back to hisroom.
“I’m going to rub jam into your pillow cases,” Agathamuttered.
“I heard that!”
Agatha managed to free her arm, and showed Baz’s living roomexactly what she thought of him.
~~~
“What if I mess this up?”
“You’re not going to mess it up.”
“But what if I do?”
“Simon, you won’t.”
“Oh god, this is going to be a disaster.”
Penny looked up from her report. “Why would it?”
Simon stared at her. “Are you kidding me?” He ticked off alist on his fingers. “I don’t know how to use the fancy forks. I’m going tostain this suit in five seconds flat. This suit makes me look like I’m havingmy bar mitzvah. And I’m going to make a dumb Fruedian slip, try to cover my attractionto our informant, and end up revealing the sting we’re planning to pull onNicodemus’s gang to the entire damn restaurant!”
Penny looked him up and down, then returned her gaze to thereport. “I think the suit looks good, actually.”
“Penny!”
Penny squeezed her eyes shut and pinched the bridge of hernose, pushing up her glasses in the process so that they magnified her eyebrowshugely. “It’ll be fine, Simon. You’re good at your job, you’re smart, and thatsuit can take worse than a few hollandaise stains.”
“But the forks!”
“Oh, nobody gives a damn about the forks,” Penny snapped.
Simon nodded mutely. He was pale where he was usually ruddy,and his hands clenched and unclenched at his sides. If he’d been wearing ahoodie, the drawstring would be a sodden mess.
“You start from the outermost fork and work your way in.”
“Yeah, okay.” Simon nodded. “I can do this.”
Penny chewed her lip, and gave up. Magee would have her headfor it, but Magee would never find out. Besides, he was the one who’d assigneda newbie like Simon to this case. Battlefield experience did not mean he wouldbe any good undercover, damn it.
“I’ll come with you, if you like,” she offered.
Simon brightened, then shook his head. “You can’t.”
“I’ll use the department connections to reserve a table andsit somewhere out of the way. I won’t interfere. I’ll just be emotionalsupport, okay?”
“But Magee-”
“Screw him,” Penny said, thoroughly enjoying Simon’s shockedexpression. “Now get out of here already, or you’ll be late for your debrief.”
“Yes sir, Agent Bunce, sir,” Simon said, saluting crisply.
“Scram, army boy,” Penny said, smacking him with the reportin her hand. “I have to get ready too, you know, and I have work to do.”
~~~
Agatha perused the menu. It had been a while since she’dlast come to The Club, and she’d forgotten how pretentious the place was. Atleast it had been easy to get a table at the last minute. The name ‘Wellbelove’still opened a few doors, even tarnished as it was. As she’d made it. Whatever.
Finally deciding on the kimchi risotto and Gigha halibut,she tried to catch the waiter’s eye. When even a discreet wave didn’t work (alady never called attention to herself, and she was being a lady), Agatha grewbored. Instead of looking to her phone for amusement (because she was beingrefined), she opted for people watching.
The couple two tables over were clearly bored with eachother, and the man was at least thinking of cheating on his wife, if the way heogled the bartender was any indication. The old ladies sitting to her left werebeing extremely snooty about someone’s fashion choices, even though one of themhad blue hair and the other had her eyebrows drawn in so high that she lookedpermanently shocked.
Agatha glanced at Baz’s table. He and Simon had their headsclose together, and their body language clearly broadcasted sexual tension. Nowshe regretted the cookie crumbs she’d stuffed into Baz’s duvet. Of course,Agatha herself didn’t see the point of it, but Baz looked like he wanted toshag his date right slap in the middle of the restaurant. He would definitelybe taking Simon home.
Turning away from that amusing scene, Agatha looked aroundidly. The businessman by the potted plant was very grumpy for someone who waseating his way through an £18 eel soufflé. The pretty woman sitting at the barwas-
-was looking straight at Baz’s table, and was almostdefinitely a fed.
Agatha squared her jaw, all thoughts of dinner vanished. Shelet her gaze drift away naturally and took stock of the situation from thecorner of her eye. The woman’s dress was well tailored, but dull enough to beoffice garb, and quite unflattering. Her shoes were nice, though. Sensibleflats, which would make running easier. Her purse would definitely fit a gun,but it wouldn’t need to- Agatha would have bet the Hope Diamond that she waswearing a thigh holster.
So, there was a federal agent stalking Baz’s romantic date.A date he really, really wanted to go well. And he would be really, reallyannoyed if she interrupted him right now. His little heart might break, andAgatha couldn’t allow that.
There really was only one option. Agatha got up from hertable and crossed the restaurant to sit down right next to Ms. MI5.
“Hi,” Agatha said, smiling the smile that had convinced aduke to allow her access to the family vault. “Mind if I join you?”
“Actually, I’d rather be alone.”
“Oh, no one wants to be alone.” Agatha leaned in. “Look, I’mreally sorry about this, but that bloke over there is my ex, and he’s not anice person. I’d really appreciate it if I could sit with you. That way hewon’t bother me.”
The fed looked in the direction Agatha had pointed in, whereEel Soufflé Man was stabbing his meal with undue vigor.
“I suppose I can’t leave a damsel in distress.”
“Thank you,” Agatha said. “Oh, how rude of me. Meredith.Meredith Reed.” One of the credit cards in Agatha’s purse was under aMeredith Reed’s name.
“Penelope Bunce.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Penelope. Would you mind if I orderdinner? I’m starving.”
“Go right ahead.” Penelope flagged down the waiter with anod that charmed Agatha right down to her toes. “Excuse me? She’d like toorder, please.”
“Yes, madam,” said the waiter. “Would madam like a menu?”
Agatha considered her previous choices, and the effectsthose foods would have on her breath. “Yes, thank you.”
“Very good, madam.” The waiter shuffled away, and Agathaturned back to Penelope.
“How did you do that so quickly? I never manage to catchtheir attention.”
Penelope raised her eyebrows. “You just have to beassertive. Besides, I don’t believe that you have trouble catching anyone’sattention.”
“Well, it’s not usually a problem,” Agatha admitted, tossingher head.
Penelope laughed. “I like that you’re direct.”
Agatha shrugged elegantly. “Why be coy? I know I’mbeautiful, just like you know that you are.”
“Oh, I’m not…” Penelope made a valiant effort at blushing,and was saved by the arrival of the waiter with the menu.
~~~
Baz really, really wanted this meeting to go well. He wantedout of the Coven, and he wanted Nicodemus and his lieutenants off the streets.But most of all, he wanted Simon to succeed on this case, kiss him on anadrenaline high, and fuck him hard against a wall before never looking him inthe eye ever again.
Well, actually, he’d like a lot more domesticity and romanticcandlelight than that, but he’d take what he could get. Men like Simon Snowjust didn’t date men like Tyrannus Basilton Pitch the Third.
At first, the meeting had gone great, but Simon was growingmore and more restless. He kept looking towards the bar, and tapping hisfingers, and answering Baz’s questions with grunts.
Okay, the grunts were oddly attractive, but still.
“Is something wrong?” Baz asked.
Simon started. “Uh, no?”
“You look so guilty right now, I can’t even begin todescribe it,” Baz said. “Pull it together, Snow. Be a professional.”
“I am being a professional,” Simon said. “Look, uh, I haveto tell you something.”
I need you, right now, said Simon in Baz’s head.
“I asked my partner to come with me to this meeting becauseI was afraid I was going to screw this up,” Simon said in a rush.
Baz raised one manicured eyebrow. “Really?”
“I used the cake fork for the scallops,” Simon pointed out.
“Fair enough.”
“But she’s distracted, and she hasn’t looked at this tablein twenty minutes, and honestly I think the woman she’s talking to is one ofyour, uh, coworkers?”
“Where?” Baz demanded.
~~~
“And then he threw it straight out the window!” Penelopesaid, taking a sip of her wine.
Agatha was laughing so hard that she had to gasp for breath.“He didn’t.”
“He did! I looked for it afterwards in the bushes, and Ijust gave up, there were so many lying around on the ground.”
“Ugh,” Agatha said. “I’m glad I’ve never had that particularexperience.”
“You’d probably have more finesse than I did,” Penelopesaid.
“Well, as I’m asexual, I really think I wouldn’t.”
“You identify as ace?”
“That was… not the question I was expecting,” Agatha said,prompting a giggle from Penelope. “More along the lines of, ‘so you’re a plant?’”
“Well, I’d like to think I’m a little better informed than that,seeing as I identify as queer myself.”
“Still, you’d be surprised how many people-”
“Ahem,” said Baz, right beside her elbow.
Agatha whirled. “Oh, Basil! What a pleasant surprise!”
“Is it? Because I distinctly remember asking you not tostalk me on my date.”
Agatha waved a hand dismissively. “Potato, potahto.”
“That is the opposite of potato potahto!”
“Look,” Agatha said. “Maybe it is. Maybe I did the exactopposite of what you asked me to do. But I did it out of friendship. I wantedto make sure you didn’t screw this up!”
“Thank you for that vote of confidence,” Baz said drily.
“I,” Agatha said, with one hand over her heart, “am here outof the goodness of my heart. Because I care for you. Besides, you were so worried,I had to be here. For backup.”
Baz glowered at her.
The man behind Baz- undoubtedly Simon- put a hand on hisshoulder, and Baz relaxed a little.
“Come on, Baz,” he said. “She’s just trying to do what Pennywas doing for me.”
“You brought a friend too?” Agatha asked.
“I didn’t bring you!”
“Where is she? I would love to meet her,” Agatha said,ignoring Baz.
“Um, she just came to, um, make sure that my date wasn’t aserial killer. And left,” Simon said.
He was a terrible liar. “You know, you can’t tell if someone’sa serial killer just from looking at them,” Agatha said, her mind coming to afew conclusions. “And Agent Bunce here, if that even is her real name, wouldknow that.”
“It is, actually,” Penelope said. “Although I’m guessingyours isn’t Meredith Reed?”
“And that man wasn’t my ex,” Agatha agreed. “I’d like toknow what’s going on. Now.”
“I suppose,” Penelope said. “Simon?”
“I say we play this off as a chance meeting of friends andleave before we draw an audience,” Simon said.
“Agreed,” Penelope said. “Now, you boys pay, and we’ll pay,and then we’ll all leave and go somewhere else.”
“I choose the location,” Agatha said quickly. “I don’t trustyou.”
But, Agatha found, as Penelope nodded and called for thebill, she still liked her.
~~~
“So, you’re giving MI5 insider information on the Coven tobring down Nico?” Agatha crossed her arms, looking at the little circle offaces standing in the most neutrally located parking lot she could think of. “Anddating the agent you’re working with?”
“I’m not dating Simon,” Baz said.
“Oh, darling. You can’t con me.” Agatha frowned. “Well, noton this. I know your body language. Even if you’re not dating, you definitelywant to.”
“So the narc part doesn’t bother you?” Baz asked dubiously. “Justthe part about my love life?”
Agatha rolled her eyes. “Of course not. I’d be delighted totake down Nico and his bloodsuckers. And honestly, you need my help, becausethat boy of yours is a disaster.”
Simon shrugged, looking vaguely embarrassed. “Sorry.”
“Not so fast,” Penelope said. “How do we know that we cantrust you?”
“Agatha’s trustworthy,” Baz said. “As long as there are norich men with expensive tastes around, that is.”
“Or women.”
“Or women,” Baz added.
Penelope sighed and pinched her nose. “God, Magee will havemy head.”
“No he won’t,” Simon said. “I’ll back you up on this.”
“He does love you like the son he never had,” Penelopeadmitted. “Okay, Agatha. Baz will tell you how and when to contact us.”
“Or,” Agatha said, “Baz could take Simon home and you couldgive me your number.”
“Or I’ll just give you a burner phone,” Penelope countered.
“When would you give me the phone?” Agatha twirled a lock ofhair around her finger. “I’m guessing you don’t have one on you, and I’m notgiving you my address.”
“Tomorrow, ten in the morning, Notes at King’s Cross,”Penelope said. “…Wait.”
“It’s a date,” Agatha said, getting into her car beforePenelope could change her mind.
“It is not a date!” Penelope called after her. “It’s againstdepartment policy to date criminals!”
“Really?” Baz asked Simon.
“Nah.”
~~~
It was a date.

In July 2018, the BellaNaija Features team decided to take a closer look at academia in Nigeria. We recognize that the current state of our educational system leaves a lot to be desired. However, in spite of all the difficulties, Nigerians still go through the system and manage to excel in their field of studies. Even more commendable are Nigerians who go over and beyond graduate level, by attempting and completing post graduate degrees. It is for this reason that we decided to specially recognize and celebrate people who completed their PhDs in Nigeria.
It is no mean feat to obtain a Doctorate any where in the world, and to do it in Nigeria means you rock!
We’re kicking off the Naija Doctorate and Proud series by celebrating Opeyemi Akinyemi-Babajide. Opeyemi is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Economics and Development Studies, Covenant University, Ota. Ogun State. Nigeria. She specializes in Energy and Policy and Environmental Management. Speaking on her inspiration for getting a PhD, she said it was in a quest to “gather additional knowledge and skills to acquire solutions to some of the challenges to power and energy in Nigeria and Africa. A doctorate programme opens one up to a number of skills and knowledge outside ones’ area of research through conference attendance, workshops and seminars.”
During her Masters programme, she caught the research bug and was hooked. Stating that getting the PhD was not her first choice, but the love for research was intense. She also realized she could use her work to impact young people.
*** Tell us what you do and how long you’ve been working in this field. I am a Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Economics and Development Studies, Covenant University, Ota. Ogun State. Nigeria. I have worked in this capacity for about six years since November 2012 when I started my doctoral programme at the same University. I am married to the love of my life Ayodeji Babajide whose support I cannot deny pulled me through this journey. We got married September 2017 after my Ph.D convocation.
What inspired the choice of your field of research? My Ph.D degree is in Economics with specialization in Energy policy and Environmental Management. Initially when I started the programme in 2012, I was not sure which area of Economics I wanted to focus on, but I knew I wanted an area that will solve an urgent problem Nigeria in particular and Africa in general.
Initially, I was working on climate change, but had to change direction after a year, after presenting the first part of the work in Abuja at a conference. The comments made me realise doing a climate change research in Nigeria was not an easy feat due to data and a number of other issues. There were a lot of issues about data and I just felt frustrated, so I went back to the literature and made some wide consultations. I finally settled for the energy sector and how it influences quality of environment.
Currently, a major part of my research is on green growth transition in Sub-Saharan Africa for Sustainable Development, especially as it relates to the role of the energy sector.
Now the big question…why did you study for your PhD in Nigeria? This is an interesting question but I will answer it as best as I can. After my NYSC in 2010, one of my University Lecturer who was also my Project Supervisor called me that my University just started their Post Graduate programme for external people (it was initially for Faculty of the University) and encouraged me to come and start my Masters programme.
I told my dad, and as a University Administrator that he is, he jumped at it and told me to go and do all I needed to do. Even though the fund was not readily available, I went ahead with the programme, especially since I was yet to get a job and was not retained by my place of primary assignment. I did my Masters and it was for 18 months. It was during this time I took interest in a Ph.D, maybe due to the academic environment I was in. I made up my mind that since my desire was to become a management consultant, I most definitely will need a Ph.D at some time in future. So I asked myself why don’t I just do the Ph.D now that I am young (I was 24 at the time). I saw a lot of older people doing Masters and Ph.D with me then and I saw many of them struggle with it, especially as it has been a long time many of them finished school and you know how technical economics can be at post graduate level.
My University offered me a job after the Masters to come do my Ph.D as I was the best graduating student in the Department, so I accepted since I didn’t have to pay, but just serve the University for a number of years, depending on how long it took me to complete the programme.
Yes, I desired to travel abroad for it, I will not deny that, but the process to getting a scholarship was getting too long and I felt I may not meet the target I set for myself (to have a Ph.D before I turned 30). Besides, the programme curriculum was very good and was run in similar way to many of the Universities abroad (my University had MoU with many Universities abroad and understudied there post graduate programme extensively). A year after my graduation I have no regret for my decision. I have interacted with many who did their programme abroad, I did not miss anything significant (my opinion). Except, probably, I might have finished earlier.
What was the cost implication of the entire programme? As I mentioned earlier, I was supported by the University in exchange to working with them for a number of years. It was more like a bond, so I did not pay for the programme.
How would you describe your experience getting your PhD in Nigeria? This question brought back a lot of emotion. Getting a Ph.D in Nigeria is not easy at all. It takes focus, commitment and determination, even in a private University. But I must say it is getting better, at least in my University. I have colleagues who completed theirs in three years. The University now has a rule that the Ph.D programme is for three years and maximum five years. If you don’t finish after 5 years, you are asked to withdraw from the programme.
Relating to my experience, after my coursework which was for about a year, I worked on a research topic for over a year before I changed topic. My supervisor at the time introduced me to relatively new methodology that he wished to develop young people in the area. According to him, it was the direction the world was going. It was a very complicated methodology with only two people in my University working in that area. A lot of people discouraged me that it was too technical and that I may not finish the programme in time. However, one thing that struck me was that there were really no female in this area. The ones that attempted it, dropped out along the way. For me, this was a challenge: if men can do it, nothing stops women from doing it as well? Especially if it will helps us understand better some of the challenges of our society and know the best fiscal policy that works. So I began my research, connected with one of the leading Professors in this area who was at the University of Ibadan, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, God bless this man for me. He is indeed a father.
He encouraged me and was excited to see that a young lady was taking interest in using Computable General Equilibrium Modelling. He supported me all through my Journey and I had a training at the Centre he oversees in UI. So that was how once or twice a month, I travel from Ota in Ogun State to Ibadan doing research. So many sleepless nights, the tears every time I reached a roadblock. There was the mockery that who sent me message? Overall, I kept pushing, kept reading and studying. I was always on the internet for latest publication on the work, on YouTube watching videos on using CGE modelling. At a point, I was at a stand still for about six months; my model wouldn’t run, showing me 3,500 errors at times. I was always looking for ways to correct these errors so I could get my result.
Meanwhile, my thesis was on removing energy subsidy and environmental quality, and government was already talking about removing subsidies on fuel, so if I didn’t conclude my research in time, I was facing the problem of policy-relevance. But I am grateful help came for me when I cried on to God to show up. He sent help for me from Canada. Dr. Veronique took time to go through my model and gave me tips on how to correct the errors as it relates to Nigeria, without meeting me – just by emails. Wonderful Woman. In three weeks, I had my results and three months after I was done with my final defence. It was a rough and tough journey, but God saw me through and he had greatly rewarded my hard work with the things he is making my hands handle. To God be the glory.
Wow! Well done. Please walk us through the process – from picking a research topic, to finding a supervisor, the methodology and thesis The process is now faster and smoother than during my time. The University management had addressed a lot of issues. In picking my research topic, I researched on areas that were not fully explored and that interests me. This is important because when the journey gets tough, it is the passion that keeps one going. But it is advisable to speak with the Department first before starting the programme to be sure there is an expert in the area you want to do your research. The Department appoints supervisors, so I had my supervisor at my Masters level, Professor Philip Alege be my main supervisor and an Associate Professor (Now a full Professor) from Mechanical Engineering, Professor Oluseyi Ajayi as my Co-Supervisor. I must say they were indeed fathers to me and made the Journey easy, God bless you, Sirs. While Professor Alege managed the economics aspect of the thesis, Professor Ajayi provided guidance on the energy component of the research as he was an expert in renewable energy technology.
The process involved having coursework, where I took some courses, thereafter, I present my proposal and when approved, go on to start field work where I gather data to be used and do my analysis. When l had my results, I was approved to go for my Post-field presentation (these presentations must be at both the departmental and college level, same with the proposal presentation and the results of the presentation must be approved by the Board of Post Graduate School and in some cases, the University Senate). For every stage, there are forms to be filled through which approvals to proceed to the next stage is given. This is where time is taken, these forms can only be processed once a month as that is when the board meets, any error in it, it is sent back, then you wait for the next month.
After the post field presentation, if there are no major issues, the corrected version from comments harvested at the presentation, is sent to three external assessors. If there are major issues with the work, the candidate goes back to the field. After receiving reports from the assessors, I made necessary corrections and a revised copy is sent to the external examiner who is an expert in the field of the research. After the examiner had satisfactorily gone through the work, he gives a date that he will be available subject to the approval of the Post graduate school and the Viva held. It is at the viva (which is the final presentation of the thesis) that you are pronounced with the degree but conferred the degree at the convocation ceremony.
Do you currently work in academia? Please provide details of your industry Yes, I currently work in the academia as a Lecturer and Researcher. I teach mainly third year and final year students (theories of growth and development, econometrics, intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics and petroleum economics; occasionally I teach history of economic thoughts and structure of the Nigerian economy). I also write papers that are published in high impact journals. I also engage in consultancy and trainings for organisations, one of which is the United Nations African Institute for Economic Development and Planning.
Sounds like you’re doing incredible work. What are the advantages of your doctorate? The advantages are numerous. It gives you a wider perspective to issues and the skills of research helps you to analyses issues better with facts. Personally, it has provided platforms for me to interact with great minds through conference attendance, participation in raining, seminars and workshops. Through networking, there is further personal development and better opportunities.
What did you learn overall from the experience? I have learnt patience and dedication. It is important in this journey, even when doing the programme abroad. It is also important to know the reason for deciding to do a Ph.D programme.
What are some of the things you would have done differently, in retrospect? There’s nothing much I could have changed. Maybe decided early on certain things which could have made me finish in three years instead of four years. UI was indecisive about some things at the initial stage.
What advice would you give someone thinking of getting a PhD? Understand why you are doing the Ph.D. It can be tedious and very demanding, especially when combining it with a business or job. Don’t just do it just because your parents wants you to or your friends are going for it. A research based Ph.D demands writing papers in journals to publish your findings and rigorous research. Many are not willing to do this and wants a short cut. So, decide from the beginning to give it all it takes, and the stress will pay off in the future.
What advice would you give people in the Nigerian academic stratosphere on how to improve the quality of the process in Nigeria? There is no advice I will give that had not been given before. We have been saying these things for a long time. We know what to do; action is what is lacking.
No doubt finance is key, it is important to do quality research such as subscribing to online Journal database. But in this part of the world, we will rather invest 50million naira in having a physical structure than use it to pay for subscription for online database that provide access to millions of journal articles of researchers from all over the world.
Also, there is need for improvements in data management. Without sufficient data, research becomes difficult. Even when you decide to do a primary study to gather the data yourself, the subjects are not willing to provide required information, especially firms. They are often uncooperative. They don’t want to have anything to do with researchers, despite the fact that results from such studies can support them through our recommendations and reports to government and policy makers.
Hmm, we hope we can get some positive change with this series. Opeyemi, do you have any final words for us? Thank you again for the opportunity BellaNaija. I LOVE YOU.
We love you too, Opeyemi. BellaNaijarians, if you enjoyed reading this, please share with your friends. If you obtained your PhD from a Nigerian University, we’d love to share your story. Please click HERE to find out how to reach us.
