"Hello?" Rusty calls out, slamming his breaks to a stop, causing his train to jostle a bit behind him. Rusty turns around and apologizes quietly before standing up as tall as he can and calling out to the fellow piece of rolling stock who seemed to be by themself on the rail. Rusty was uncertain of how to proceed. This wasn't just some debris he could pick up and move...this machine could be hurt. He didn't want to travel any further until he was certain they were okay. "Are you alright?" Rusty calls out again, and for good measure, he whistles loudly. The kind of whistle used as an attention getter by little switching engines...he hadn't quite grown out of that habit.

hi!!! i just wanted to say i really love all of your MASKS stuff. i'm something of a newbie when it comes to the TTRPG community, but MASKS seems to be not very well-known and i think that's a real shame. i'm a huge fan of old-school superhero-adjacent stuff, especially the silver- and bronze-age ones!
by the way, i was wondering if you'd be willing to share some tips for a first-time GM? you don't have to if you'd rather not! i just figured i'd try asking since i was planning on GMing a MASKS campaign for some of my friends later, but despite my decade's worth of roleplaying experience i've never been in a TTRPG campaign nor a GM (or similar) role before
Thank you so much!! I was just lamenting about how I felt bad for the MASKS tag because it is now flooded with all my npc nonsense hahah so this is really nice to hear.
It's awesome you're planning on running a MASKS game for your friends!! There is an indispensable post on twitter I saw that has a LOT of great tips for running MASKS that I recommend checking out. But for my own personal tips that are just me things, here's what I got. Sorry it's gonna be extremely long-winded, it may take a few months to read through it.
(Note: I am also hugely into RP and probably put more into it than what is necessary, especially with MASKS which is meant to be able to be played out of the box. It was definitely not played out of the box in our case because I require a lot out of myself and everyone else to feel good about running something. if anyone else wants to continue seeing me as a normal human being please don't click the Keep Reading)
Since you're running it, make the world interesting to you. If the world runs around themes you're personally interested in then you'll have a much easier time coming up with answers on the fly. For me, themes I'm interested in that lend themselves well to a superhero world: money, power, family, celebrity, media, the 24 hour news cycle and the desensitization of violence. Because I'm interested in this stuff anyway, wrapping a world around them makes it much simpler for me to figure out how the world ticks and thus how the characters fit into it and how the world reacts to them, and I am DESPERATE to find out how the characters react to all the questions and expectations the world is imposing upon them.
Make sure your players have a good grasp of the tone of story so they can make characters that gel well within it. For me the tone is a lil more adult because I'm not personally into younger morality tale stories in tone, it's pretty grounded, and I think comedy and tragedy work hand in hand so I lean into them.
Talk. A lot. Talk about the characters, talk about the world. MASKS is fun because it's a LOT of talking and figuring out the narrative together. It's not a lot of crunchy mechanics, it's all around seeing how the characters react to the world narratively, all hurt and comfort and emotions which (for me) requires people to have a good grasp on their characters and the world. I like to give my players "homework" where I ask them a question involving their characters in some way like "what hero did your character look up to as a child?" so they get to come up with past heroes, or "How does your character feel about _____?" etc etc. The only fans are gonna be your table and fans love to talk so be the biggest fans of the PCs!!
Figure out your framing. I know in MASKS they suggest framing it like a comic book, and basically talking about the frames on screen. For me, because I'm more into movies and tv than comics, I frame it like that. So I have an active "camera" in play during sessions and will ask things like "would anyone like to grab the camera?" to encourage the players to put the character into a scene or "what does the audience see as the camera focuses in on your character in this emotional moment?" There is a LOT of playing up to the camera and framing the sessions as episodes of a show, so it's like, okay, you have several options but what is going to be interesting for the audience to see? I find this encourages the players to have their characters take bigger swings and feel comfortable letting us into how their character is feeling because it all looks GREAT on camera. The camera loves it. The PCs are the story after all.
Because I frame it a show, I also like to play individual ending songs over the "credits" at the end of each episode. So I asked my players to make playlists for their characters so if I feel an episode had a lot of emotional focus on one character in particular, I can play one of their songs at the end of the episode! I also made a general MASKS playlist with a bunch of songs from the era we set it in (2004) to pull from. It's a fun little addition that I really enjoy and that I hope makes it all feel more special.
The Dino Donut Effect: create landmarks in your world. (OK THIS IS GONNA BE LONG BUT WORK WITH ME HERE) They don't have to be locations, more solid landmarks of the story that the characters can refer back to and lean on to make the world feel more "real." I call it the Dino Donut Effect because in our world the thing that made everything click into place was talking out the backstory of one of the PC's figuring out they had the power negation ability. We were talking one night trying to figure it out; we wanted the character to fall out of a building and be caught by a flying superhero and accidentally turn off their powers, so they toss the kid to another flying supe whose powers also get turned off. But we were like... holy shit what is the height of a building needed that can handle this much action in the air without them hitting the ground in 3 seconds. So after a long night of talking about terminal velocity and looking at Splat Calculators we figured out the height of the building, and we needed them to crash into something that wouldn't fuckin kill them. The first suggestion was a truck full of bananas. Nah. We landed on a giant balloon that could take the impact. And the balloon became a giant T-Rex holding a donut that was the mascot of the city's beloved decades old donut shop Dino Donut. And so we decided that one of the two flying supes grabbed onto the kid and the other and flew into the giant balloon to try and keep them all alive, which destroyed the balloon, which was a city institution, and there was a crowd of children there that day that saw their friend Dino Donut die. Killed by a superhero. The balloon deflated loudly so it sounded like Dino Donut was screaming in agony. All the kids were traumatized (screaming crying throwing up), the city was furious because everyone loved Dino Donut, it was constantly in the news cycle, and it ruined the career of the supe that "killed Dino Donut." AND THEN THEY REPLACED THE DINO DONUT BALLOON WITH A LAME "UPDATED DESIGN" DINO DONUT STATUE which everyone hates and people consider to be a memorial to the old Dino Donut. ANYWAY, the Dino Donut effect is that now all the PCs have one single incident to refer back to that they all have feelings about. A couple of them were there that day and heard Dino Donut scream, one is now the protege of the disgraced superhero that killed Dino Donut so she feels uncomfortable talking about it, there's the kid that was saved that day but was sworn to secrecy by the supe so no one would find out about his power negation ability, and then there's the kid that wasn't there because she's an alien that just arrived to earth and now the kids have to explain the incident to her with all their varying opinions. Now the PCs' meeting spot is at a Dino Donut. Having this one solid incident that is both funny and kind of goes into the themes of the world has been an absolute treat. Creating "landmarks" like that in the world has done so much and now I'm like okay I'm gonna try to do this moving forward with any other thing I run.
anyway these are my extremely specific to me tips. my RP standards are kind of high which makes me a bit of a terror but also when the flowers bloom from it it feels GREAT. i'm not sure if this will help but hopefully there is something there that can be useful!
MASKS is fun and simple once you get the hang of it, though, so I'm sure whatever you do you and your players will have a lot of fun! especially if you're someone who is into RP which is the background I'm coming from too; MASKS is extremely narrative! i'll be looking in the tag for your game hehe

AMP-GUIDES: GETTING STARTED WITH RPing OCs IN THE RPC
Pointers for new or first-time OC players looking to get the ball rolling with writing original characters on Tumblr.
► First off: why make a post like this?
...Because original characters in the RPC (particularly ones who AREN'T fandom OCs, who instead belong to their own original universe) don't have the starting boost of having an existing fandom behind them. They don't set out already recognisable to other players, so it can sometimes be a little tougher to drum up engagement.
► Tip #1: Make your OC easy to know
Two things to keep in mind when trying to get an OC blog out there: 1: nobody knows your character except you. Ergo, 2: ...it's your number one objective to make your OC knowable and interesting to your hopefully-future-RP partners! People visiting your blog should have a way to quickly find out the basics of your character and what makes them tick. Keep in mind that having too much information can sometimes be as big of a roadblock to interaction as not having enough. Long bios documenting your OC's entire life-story can be useful to have around, but may be better to have in addition to a shorter and more succinct bio that neatly introduces the core concept of your muse. When you go hunting for a new book at the library or bookshop, do you dive into every book you pick up straight from page 1? Or do you check out the blurb first, to see if the plot even sounds interesting to you? Your muse doesn't need fancy powers or tragic backstory to be interesting, but regardless of if your OC is the plainest everyman or a secret superhero, you still have to let us see what makes it worth getting to know them. Make sure your pages contain the most basic of basics, such as name, gender (or just pronouns), age, and basic physical details, as well as where your muse comes from/what their world is like, a cursory introduction to their personality, and what they're up to at this point in their life. Establishing a setting and any goals can offer hooks for interactions with other muses. Other things that can be helpful are rundowns of their likes and dislikes, their positive/negative/neutral traits, and information on their strengths or weaknesses, or even the places you'd be most likely to find them.
► Tip #2: Consider visuals
Faceclaims, icons, and fancy graphics are NOT mandatory to finding your OC's niche and having a good time in the tumblr RPC...but they can be nice to have around, and some players feel they can connect easier to OCs when they have a visual aid to help visualise your character. Even if you don't plan on using icons, having just one good quality image for your OC's bio can go a long way. But again: it's optional, so don't sweat it too much.
► Tip #3: Shop around for fandoms with themes or settings similar to your OC's
Is your OC is from a fantasy background? Sci-fi? From a version of our own world? When you're getting started trying to find writing partners, you may find you're most likely to be successful reaching out to muses from canons that fit together well with what you're going for with your own OC. This doesn't mean you can't also shoot for cross-genre interactions, of course, but seeking out muses from fictional worlds similar to your own can be a good place to start.
► Tip #4: Showcase your OC in action
Even if you're not writing threads just yet, in-character posts, open starters or short drabbles can all be a good indicator for newcomers of how your character interacts with others and with the world. Remember: nobody knows your character yet, so something that gives others a hint of your character's vibe can be useful for sparking interest in them. Writing short headcanon posts can be used to the same effect, as they can be a helpful and fun way to both flesh our who your muse is as a person, and to introduce tidbits about your character that don't necessarily come up in a bio section...which can offer more interesting lore about your muse and help other players identify things your characters might either bond or bicker over.
► Tip #5: Don't forget about your fellow OCs
Don't be a stranger! If you know what a slog it can be to build traction for an OC blog then it makes sense to extend a little energy to your fellow OCs in the community. Take the time to check over other OC players' blogs, see if you might find their character interesting, or maybe even take a chance if you're on the fence...you can always unfollow later if you decide your play styles or your muses don't gel.
► Tip #6: Don't get discouraged
OCs can have a harder time in fandom heavy RPCs. It's just a natural expectation of not having the "brand recognition" and pre-existing affection that canon muses frequently do. Some OCs have an easier time taking off than others, but don't give up if yours comes up on a slow start. If you're passionate about your muse and are willing to be a little patient, you'll find your crowd! If you ARE struggling to find people to write with, maybe shop around different promo tags and fandoms, and audit your OC's pages again to make sure that there's enough to draw folks in and that you're selling what makes them unique and engaging. OCs can sometimes take a little more work than canon muses to get out there, but don't listen to anyone who tells you the RPC doesn't like OCs or that they can't be really successful out here. It's true that writing an OC often necessitates being the one to reach out first, but it's a rewarding experience, and you'll be surprised how many people will be enthusiastic to get to know your muse and will grow to love them in time.

Rules and terminology of roleplaying with people
While roleplaying is a fun medium that is mostly a free place for people to express their creativity, there are some rules, terminology and regulations that you would have to follow, to have a good reputation in the roleplay community, and if you want to attract experienced roleplayers to you.
Let's start off by a few sites I use to roleplay
SITES
Aniroleplay - a good place to roleplay, mostly consists of people playing original characters or characters from animated media.
Roleplay.me - much more populated than Aniroleplay, and quite fun, for me personally. My preferred rp site. You will find a fix of real life and animated characters on there, though most people play their original characters.
Flist - mostly adult rp site, but if you're looking for that? That's gonna be perfect. It can be a bit difficult to navigate at first, but after you get it, it's wonderful. The profile making is very in depth, so that's fun too.
Quotev - this is mostly a reading site, like wattpad, but what makes this different is the group option, which is mostly used by people to roleplay. This will be the most different style of roleplay, if you've never roleplayed before. I'll explain more later in the post. There are two methods to find a rp on here. Either write the Fandom you want in the Quotev search bar and go into group section, or write on the Google search bar Quotev directory and look through them. Roleplayers have made up directories to find rp groups much easier!
Tumblr - another unconventional rp platform. It's quite common for people to set up accounts as a character and interact with others like that. It's a fun way to interact with the community and at the same time, roleplay.
Those are the main places I roleplay on. Now, I want to share some of my "wisdom" about the unspoken rules I learned of rping with others and some terms you might encounter, which might confuse you.
RULES
- preferably, use third person. On cai you will most likely use second or first person to roleplay. That's a big no no for rping with real people. It makes your reply look cheap and most don't enjoy that format.
(example of pov writing)
First pov (I ate ice cream)
Second pov (you ate ice cream) (using you as the pronoun to talk about your character)
Third pov (he ate ice cream)
- make your reply descriptive, use various words. Don't use the same words, or make the reply simple. The fancier or better sounding the better. It makes people excited to reply, and makes them add more flavor to their text. People aren't like ai, they like substance.
- one paragraph and up. The more you write, the better. Sure, you can discuss to rp in shorter sentences, but the rp will grow stale and you will get dropped, or drop the person.
- space your stuff with paragraphs. Don't wrote everything in one huge block of text. It's hard to read and people will not want to rp if you make it hard for them
- don't rp in script. I'll explain what script is, but the rp usually gets stale fast, and no descriptive rper wants to rp with a scripter.
- don't interrupt 1x1 rps. I'll explain what that means later down. It's rude and you can get people mad at you.
- don't control what the other person does. It's annoying, and will quickly get you a bad reputation in the rp community, and you might start seeing that good quality rpers don't want to roleplay with you.
- There is a social dynamic in rp communities, especially aniroleplay and roleplay.me. If you are an asshole, impatient or create mary sue characters, you will start getting rejected for rps by high quality roleplayers.
- Be patient. These are people you're roleplaying with. They will not reply to you as quality as AI does. It might take hours, maybe a day or longer. It's just how this shit goes.
- Read the person's profile. They might have rules, original character information or just other stuff you might need to know before you can roleplay with them.
- Don't jump straight into a rp from the get-go, unless the account says they accept starter greetings. Discuss the rp beforehand and make sure your partner is okay with what you want to do. If you want to do nsfw roleplays, discuss it beforehand as many people are uncomfy with that sort of stuff.
- When discussing stuff outside of roleplay, add a little marker to make it clear you're talking out of character.
(Example)
-
()
[]
/\
- They are not your friends, so don't make the first message you write something like "hi, how're you?". You guys are here for rp, so get to the point. If they have rules, include that you read them, and if you have a specific idea you wanted to try with them, include that in the message. Make the rp idea no longer than 4 sentences, as you can discuss the details together later.
- Avoid sending prewritten greetings. It's very easy to notice when you are doing that, especially if it's a long message. If you have to gave a prewritten greeting, keep it short, and add more info to it, based on the profile you are contacting.
- Don't use text language in rp. It makes your reply seem cheap and can turn a lot of people off. It also takes out the soul of your reply.
(Example)
u
totes
lol
TERMINOLOGY
Double up - It's a style of roleplay where you play two point of views. One being your original character and the other is the love interest of your rp partner. This is a popular roleplay style on quotev.
(Example)
Mary walked down the street, sighing.
----
Bakugou was mad that he couldn't see him today.
1x1 - It's when you rp one on one with someone. It's in other words, a private roleplay.
group rp - It's when you roleplay with multiple people at the same time, in the same roleplay, each taking a role, and adding onto each other. *I don't personally like this, as it can get messy*
rp - stands for roleplay
pov - stands for "point of view". I explain the different povs in an earlier part of the post.
AU - Alternative universe.
"You add, you message first" - Something you will often see on accounts that take a more serious approach to roleplaying. It means that If you add them, you will have to message them first, or they will delete you out of their friend list.
Script - It's a style of writing.
(Example)
John: I guess that's weird
Descriptive - It's a writing style
(Example)
John sighed, shrugging his shoulders. "I guess that's weird"
Mary sue/Gary stu - cliche characters that usually make your character overpowered, or not fit in the setting at all.
godmodding - Taking control of your partner's character. Very frowned upon.
IC - It means "In character". It means the person will talk to you as their character.
OOC - It means "Out of character". This person will talk to you simply, not playing their roleplaying character.
OC - It means "Original character". It's the character you play, if you create them.
Admin - A term used when a person has more than one rp account. It's usual that you only contact and rp with one of the accounts under that one admin.
I hope this helps. If anyone has any questions, or need any help or anything related to roleplaying with real people, feel free to dm me!

do u have any advice for someone downloading lotro for the first time??? u make it look so cool!!! 🌸
Well, I am not very sure I am playing right. I can't speak to people nor offline nor online somehow, so I am missing a lot.
• First, you will have to type password everytime you go to play.
• Then, choosing a server to play on. Each one has their own purpose, there are American and European, some are RP oriented, some are for raids, etc. Although I've heard people there are insufferable with particular rules. (I play on Landroval and I like it so far).
• There are lots of setup to prepare. For graphic options there are videos and articles.
In Options you will find UI settings, where you will be able to change size of various elements (map radar, quest tracker, etc.)
• For a good time I didn't know how to change size of a text in quest dialogue.
Tumblr media
• You can look up how to set up chat as well, and text there can be colored for you to notice stuff easier.
Tumblr media
• And once you set everything for your use, you can save it by typing /ui layout save [name] in chat. If you change something accidentely, you can make it look like before with /ui layout load [name] command.
• Then there are useful plugins to help with better game experience:
I have Deed Tracker, Emotes Helper (to have all emotes automatically in a separate window) and Lotropad (very useful for saving commands so you can just copy/paste them, other game details; and you can upload images (maps with specific locations for example, but I put funny backgrounds for my text xD)
I also have Opaque Quest Tracker and MoorMap.
And SongBook for those who want to be musicians. But I only play My Little Pony and TF2 Soldier Theme xD
• Another things I was unaware for a good time are cosmetic outfits (I don't remember why but I couldn't slot anything there so I assumed it's a pay-for-thing, there happened this funny screenshot though) and one bag instead of 3 separate ones (opening one bag is more comfortable for me, and to make one you just need to drag slots from other bags to the first one while in edit mode).
Tumblr media
• There is also a Filter Panel, to filter out some loot, quests and sounds. For items you need to drag it into a panel (I put lootboxes there).
• There are things like LOTRO points you can get through doing deeds in game rather than transfering your money (I spent my first good bunch on making steeds faster for the whole account, but you can also save some for buying a game content expansion).
• Folks in chat also remind of codes sometimes that give you useful stuff (to redeem a code you will need to go to the LOTRO store).
Tumblr media
• Yeah, since I am a f2p player, I have to write down destinations to navigate easier in Middle Earth. I am writting them down to not forget:
Tumblr media
• Finally, there is also https://lotro-wiki.com/, quite useful. And if something is unclear for me, I go to search for answers in websearch or on YouTube.
• And, I see people do play the game differently, you can skip quests and do whatever, but I am personally here for going through LOTR story and watching the stories of LOTRO characters too (even if I am mostly interested in dwarves and hobbits, but oh well). There are also seasonal Festivals in game, they are fun! You will be able to get a good looking outfit and a beautiful steed.
I think I wrote down most of what brought confusion to me first time. For sure I forgot something important, but I hope you will be able to find answers. Good luck.

Saiki K Roleplayer List!
SFW Edition
If you're interested in roleplaying characters from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K with other people, reply to this post with the following info:
Characters you like to play
Characters you'd like the other person to play
Overall genre of roleplay you're looking for (ex. Slice of life, romance, drama, angst, AU, etc.)
That's it!! No fancy intros or artsy ASCII needed, though you can always reply from a rp-dedicated sideblog if you have one.
You can reblog this post with the same information in case one of your followers may be interested in roleplaying with you!
To find a rper, look through the replies on this post. It may be easier to do on the browser since you can Ctrl+F your favorite characters' names. Once you've found someone, send them an ask or a DM, hash out the details and get to roleplaying! Have fun!!
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I'm scared to put myself out there?
Do it scared! We're all just Saiki nerds on the Internet. Worst thing that can happen is nothing, average thing that can happen is a few weeks of roleplaying fun, best thing that can happen is finding a new best friend for life. Just give it a try!
What about all the other roleplay details like the length of replies, platforms, specific headcanons, etc?
Negotiate those after getting in touch. Replies have a character limit and I'm doing it this way on purpose so you don't have to scroll past 5 paragraphs per person lol.
I found someone I'd be interested in roleplaying with but their ask box and DMs are closed.
Trying to reply to their reply on this post, or @ them in another post.
I'm not interested in roleplaying any more, how can I get off this list?
Find your reply in the notes and delete it. On the web, from post notes on the dashboard, click the three dots that appear when you hover over a reply or reblog caption to bring up these options. From the app, just tap (iOS) or tap and hold (Android) a reply or reblog caption to get the menu.
If you've reblogged the post, then find your reblogs and delete them. That's it!
There's nobody I'm interested in roleplaying with on the list.
Did you put yourself on the list first? 🧐
If so, you can always check back on this post later. I plan to reblog it every once in a while to hopefully get more signups and give everyone another chance to connect.
Is there a NSFW version of this post?
Yes, it has a community label to restrict access to those who are 18+. Check it out here!

How To Make A Character For RP
I was asked and so I decided to write a guide on the subject. Sorry for the wait, and I hope this helps anyone who needs it who wants to get started in RP!
(Though this is for the Pokemon RP Tumblr community mainly, and thus will be written with that in mind, the basic gist should be good for any kind of RP you want to do!)
The first rule to keep in mind, the very first rule, the one that supercedes all others in character creation:
Have fun.
It sounds trite, but it really is the most important rule- You’re not going to want to write a character if you don’t enjoy the concept. If you aren’t having fun, then writing will become a chore, and that’s the surest and fastest way to make sure you stop.
(Obviously, what takes priority over even that is your RP partners’ comfort, but if you’re still creating a character, you’re probably not there yet.)
So, with that said! Let’s start with the basics:
Step one: Your basic concept
To start with, let’s come up with your most basic concept. It doesn’t have to be anything big to start out- It could be as minor as “a trainer who has a certain Pokemon”.
The key to this is figuring out what you want to play. Not just related to the abovementioned having fun, but also, figuring out what you want to play with helps narrow down ideas for your concept.
For example: Do you want to be an ordinary person just interacting with daily life things? Or would you rather be a special, major character? Would you rather keep to the tone and canon as established by your canon’s setting? Would you rather strike out and explore tones and ideas canon wouldn’t touch?
WIth Pokemon, there are several options you could try to build a character around- You could be a normal trainer, or not even a trainer, just a random person in a city. You could be a champion-level Trainer, or a protagonist on a journey. You could be a member of an evil Team, or even its boss. Or you could be even a person from another dimension, Fallen into the Pokemon world… or even a talking Pokemon yourself. Even Legendary Pokemon are allowed.
It doesn’t have to be anything special, either. For example, the original basic concept that became Sophora was “wouldn’t it be very silly for a veterinarian to try to give a Vaporeon shots. They’d just blorb.” And that was it! That was what I started with.
The sheer amount of possibilities does make this the most difficult, and probably most daunting, step. But once you get this down, the rest comes much easier.
You may want to draw from yourself, to use your own experiences as a concept, or try to make something completely separate from you. Everything is personal preference!
Step two: Refining the concept
So, you’ve gotten your basic concept- Let’s start with a basic example! Let’s continue with using my own character, Sophora, as the primary example. Her basic concept was “a veterinarian who has to deal with trying to give Pokemon shots.”
Once you have a basic concept, the next thing to do is ask questions. “Why does this person live in that city?” “Why does this Trainer only have one Pokemon, and that one?” “How did they get that Pokemon?”
From there, you’ll also want to consider other concepts you’ll want to play with. You don’t have to limit yourself to one basic concept, after all! I wanted to play with the idea of how normal people might get involved with evil teams, so this added two more concepts into the mix- “Former evil Team grunt” and “normal person”. From there, I remembered how Pokemon Special involved some Team Plasma grunts who genuinely believed in their mission, and then it squared itself easily.
Once you’ve put together all your concepts, you should be left with a fairly decent picture of a coherent whole- Your character, as they are in the present, in their current situation.
So, you have your character’s present circumstances, so you’re done, right? WRONG next category!
Step three: From concept to character
All you have right now are the character’s present circumstances. That’s not enough to start writing, and especially not enough to respond to other people. There are two major things you need to consider from here: Your character’s personality and their history.
Some people like to build one and then use that to inform the other, in either order. Some people like to build them both at the same time. I personally tend to start with personality first, then work backwards from there to determine history, but many people prefer the opposite. I personally find that it’s easier to start with personality and then work backwards to determine history, but some people prefer to start from the beginning with history and use that to inform personality.
Regardless, the effect is roughly the same. If you start with personality, think about what traits you’d find interesting and fun to play off of other characters. (Keep in mind for RP, you aren’t writing solo! You have to consider what you find fun to bounce off other people.) Then you want to think back to question what made them that way! This is similar to the ‘refining your concept’ stage, but it is much more detailed. If your character doesn’t trust people, why don’t they? Did something happen to them, or is it just a natural part of who they are? If something happened, what was it? If it’s just part of them, how did that affect things in their past?
You don’t need to have a complete play-by-play of every event in their life. But by working backwards, by connecting how one event leads to another, you can build a fairly coherent overview. The details don’t need to be filled in- They can be filled in later, in play, as things come up.
So, are you done now? Nope, not yet!
Step four: Play!
“Wait, but you just said we’re not done!”
That’s right. You don’t have everything you need- But here’s the secret: You will never figure out everything you need before you start playing. When you start playing, something unexpected always comes up. So don’t sweat the details too much. If you wait until you have every possible detail sorted out, you’ll never start playing. So it’s much better to just have the major points, the important stuff, and let the details get filled in as they come up.
Once you’ve really put a bunch of work and thought into characters, they have a way of coming alive and surprising even the writer. You may think your character acts or would respond one way, but when the event actually comes up in RP, they’ll react in a totally different way that surprises even you. Keep an open mind, and chase what’s fun and interesting!
With that in mind, you’re ready to start playing. Have fun, always be sure to check with your RP partners’ comfort, warn if you’ve got triggering content, and keep at it!

Hi, so I know that you run that one crispin blog, and I kinda want to know how to make an blog for rp like that? also how to like. integrate into whatever's going on over there
yep, that's me! the crispin guy. and making a rotomblr blog is pretty simple! to actually set it up, you need to make a sideblog. i use laptop, so it might be different for you but it's p much the same procedure. there's a sidebar with a bunch of different options. click on the one that says account, which looks like this.
Tumblr media
it has a drop-down menu, displaying likes, following, the log out option, and your blogs. the blogs one is the important one. it looks like this.
Tumblr media
click the "+ New" option, which takes you to where you MAKE the side blog. there's a menu that's displayed, which shows you the options to pick the display name [aka the blog title. like mine that says "Mr. He/They Transgender Gay.] and the blog url [the actual username, like shingetsu-online]. the "set password" option is only if you want the blog to be visible to someone WITH the password. like a private account essentially. you can skip the password if you want the blog to be visible to everyone. there's a captcha afterwards, one of the "click all the images with stairs" ones.
and that's how you make a sideblog! the icon, blog colours, banner, and bio can be set from the blog settings of the sideblog.
establishing your character and whatnot is DEFINITELY the easier part. making an intro post's a good way to start: introduce your character [usually in-character], what they do, and what region they're in. adding things like pokemon teams and interests are all optional, but they're fun to add! also: add an out of character part [usually under a "read more".], which will help you introduce yourself as the mod, set up boundaries for specific things, add spoiler/trigger warnings, clarify if magic anons are on, and other things about your character that you'd like to add. hope this helps!!

I'm curious, I really like all your dnd characters, and I was wondering how you come up with them! Do you write all your own backstory and motivations?
thank you!! I adore inflicting my blorbos on people online and i’m always thrilled to hear that they enjoy it. the short answer is yes— I like to leave gaps in my backstory for my DMs to exploit, and obviously those DMs are running the overall story, but my PCs (player characters) are all original characters of mine, and their assorted bullshit is entirely up to me. (in case it’s unclear, that only applies to my PCs, Teddy and Aster being the ones I mostly talk about On Here. Clay, Borakov, Strahd, etc are all created and run by friends who are generous enough to occasionally let me gnaw on their characters like chew toys).
"How I come up with them" varies a lot! One of my PCs, Tailor, is a repurposed side character from an old book I was writing (which was itself inspired by Alice in Wonderland -- he was the Mad Hatter character). With my storm sorcerer Marin, I knew I wanted to do an Ocean Aesthetic, so I gave her a mysterious shipwrecked-with-amnesia backstory and a pirate found family. Teddy's backstory is lightly plagiarized from Alina's in Shadow & Bone, and Aster's antiquities expert background and general archetype is inspired by Evelyn in the Mummy. Like coming up with any character, it's just a game of picking one cool thing and then scaffolding out other elements that interest you and complement the core idea.
And what's great is that character creation is just coming up with a STARTING PLACE. A PC's Whole Deal emerges over time, a combination of discovery and deliberate choice that's really fun to craft.
Tumblr media
These days, I try to keep my backstories to a tight 2-3 paragraphs with 1-3 meaningful NPCs. I've done the long convoluted backstory thing with Tailor, and it turned out very cool -- my DM knocked it out of the park incorporating everything -- but I wouldn't do it again. Aster, my most recent character, has probably the most minimal backstory I've ever done. I wanted to do something simple and strong, do it well, and be free from the traditional backstory resolution D&D arc in favor of whatever else the campaign is going to throw at her.
I love that you mention motive! Puzzling out what my characters want and feel as the story progresses is sooooo fun for me. Inbetween sessions I try to look at what's happened in game lately and ask what it changes for my character, logistically or emotionally, and how I can incorporate that moving forward. And this has increasing returns! Over time, asking myself a lot of small questions about how I want them to react, why they might do that or feel that way, and then playing that out -- taking into account all the improv RP decisions that happen along the way!! -- builds up to a strong sense of who they are. And that becomes REALLY helpful when dramatic narrative choices have to be made in-game.
Tumblr media
This is a big part of all the fic and meta I write -- it's an exercise in bringing into alignment what's happening in game and my conception of who these characters ARE in a detailed, specific way. Because the better I can reconcile them, the more they'll feed each other and make each other richer and more interesting, and the easier and better my realtime RP will be. Of course, this is an optional thing I do for funsies, and it doesn’t pay to overthink it -- this stuff is organic and always evolving, and we’re here to have fun at the table first and foremost. BUT it’s super rewarding for me and has become a huge part of why I enjoy the game so much.

name / pronouns?: Kai, they/them
most active muse(s)?: As of right now, my most active muses include any of my guys from Fallout, with mostly Nora and Aries/Charlie at the top of that list. out of my non-fallout muses, I'd have to say Amanda Holliday is the one hogging some bit of my headspace, I always have some muse for her but I'm not complaining <3
rp pet peeves?: The usuals, lack of communication, not respecting established boundaries, rushing others into doing replies, forcing ships, etc, that sort of stuff. roleplay is supposed to be a fun hobby, not some chore and people who make it otherwise? Smdh at them
years of experience?: Roughly about twelve years now, with breaks inbetween. It's been long enough that I've kinda lost track of the exact amount of time but I started when I was 9 (the same age I got diagnosed w/ type 1 diabetes and adopted my cat after we found her, a very eventful time in my life then). I've been at this for a long time but I don't think me stopping for good is something that's going to be happening anytime soon
fluff, angst, or smut?: Generally, I have a bit more of a preference towards the first two options but I'm potentially open to the possibility of smut if I'm comfy enough with a fellow writer, smut isn't something I'll jump into just like that, and I usually don't have a lot of h muse often anyways
plots or memes?: A mix of both, though I lean a bit more towards memes because they're easier to get interactions out of then plotting, personally speaking, but if I've got enough spoons, I'm a huge sucker for an interesting plot or two
long or short replies?: Both, another thing that depends on my spoons and the like. I try to stick to longer replies but sometimes the brainworms aren't there for it
time to write?: I don't have a specific time scheldule of when I try, just whenever I have the free time and the energy to do so
are you like your muse(s)?: Ehhhh, I would say no. I have a tendency to self-project onto them a lot, but honestly it doesn't really go beyond that line

Ed's TRON 2.0 AU
Also known as Ed's misadventures in the Grid
so... This idea came up in an RP, and I kinda like it? Idk. Some day I will give Ed something to be happy about in his backstory, but that day is not today.
Any way a big part of Ed's background is that his father threatened to kidnap him if he refused to work for Sr. But what if SR didn't threaten?
The thing is, he paid for Ed's college education expecting Ed to work for fCon when he graduated. Instead, Ed essentially cut ties and went to go work for fCons largest competitor. At first, he gave Ed the option to be a corporate spy, but when it becomes clear Ed has no interest in that, he figured if Ed won't be useful, he might as well make him useful... by letting him be the first (second after Thorne???) test subject for fCon's attempt at the digitization technology.
Regardless, if Dillinger Sr. kidnapped him, at this point in Ed's life, he's been at Encom a short enough time and holds a position low enough that nobody would really bat an eye at his disappearance beyond the necessary paperwork to hire someone to replace him.
There are SO MANY ways this could go.
If he's the first, before they realized they needed Ma3a (YORI??? WHAT HAPPENED TO YORI? FUCK IT IN THIS VERSION IT'S YORI IF NOT BOTH), Ed likely gets corrupted and is trapped as such in the computer. Unless someone (Lora?) with experience with the laser finds him and recruits probably a whole hospital's worth of doctors to help restore him, he's likely to just... haunt the system as a user-program eldritch horror. There's a lot of fun themes about what it is to be human that could be explored here.
If fCon got a hold of Yori, he could either be kidnapped and digitized in addition to, or instead of Alan.
If it's instead of Alan, there's very little chance of anyone realizing what happened. Dillinger Sr. would very likely try to contain Ed, and maybe for a while he would succeed, but eventually Ed, determined not to end up in the situation he'd grown up in again, would manage to escape containment. Even then, the chances of returning to the other side of the screen are uncertain. More likely, he just wanders around the system, maybe he ends up staying to cause chaos on fCon's server, maybe he tries to get back to Encom to just live out the rest of his life as a digital being. Maybe Yori finds him and helps him get out once they both get back to Encom's server.
If Alan is also kidnapped and the events of 2.0 play out, then it's possible Jet may find him and they could escape together. This could be either the beginning of a very strong friendship or bitter rivalry. Either way, this scenario is the one where he's most likely to escape back to the other side of the screen.
There are several end scenarios in the event that Ed does make it back, regardless of the path it took to get there.
The fist is the status quo remains (mostly) unchanged. Ed goes back to working for Encom, he files for a restraining order on his father, maybe he's friends with Alan and Jet, maybe he's not. He knows what fCon is up to, and is quietly trying to foil the rest of their plans with Alan and Jet.
OR...
Dillinger Sr. catches wind that they're about to escape and arrives just after they've made it back to the other side. That mishap that happened to Lora in the 2.0 timeline? It doesn't happen to Lora. Maybe it's a mishap, maybe it's not, but the laser fires, and Dillinger Sr. is caught in it. Maybe Dillinger Sr. is corrupted, maybe he's not. regardless, he's put on a portable storage device. There's a chance that fCon crumbles once Dillinger Sr. is gone, but if it doesn't, it's no longer the Evil Corperation of Evil any more. Just another competitor. Ed keeps the portable drive locked in a desk drawer or firebox, labeled clearly DO NOT OPEN. Ed sleeps a little easier, though he still fears someone getting ahold of the drive and unwittingly freeing Dillinger Sr.
OR...
The laser misfires. When the local authorities arrive and Ed, Alan, and Jet give their statements, there are no charges. It was an accident, or it was self defense, though it may take a while to convince everyone when Dillinger Sr.'s death hits the news.
Ed is finally safe and his father will never be able to control him again, but it will be a while before Ed can sleep without dreaming of his father's charred remains.

I'm really looking forward to playing Baldur's Gate 3.
Like, it's gonna be my first D&D style game and with how long I've been meaning to get into D&D, I'm really excited about it. And the fact that it has so many options that actually affect your gameplay experience seems super fun, but it's also super scary ngl XD
Like, in most games that I played, what you choose doesn't affect the overall outcome of the story and even when it does, there are usually like idk 3 endings at best, so the way they seem to be going with bg3, from what I understand at least, and how your choices affect the story so much and I think even which companions stay with you (I wasn't that focused on what they were saying tbh, was waiting for the "bear scene" XD) , it's already feeling a bit overwhelming. At least, for someone who's so new to the genre.
Again, I like that your actions and choices have consequences, it's fun, exciting but still a bit overwhelming.
Especially when the 2 characters I liked the most seem to be like complete opposites. Although, with the way I'd probably play my character, at least based on how I did in the EA, they're gonna be "a good person", so while this doesn't seem like it's gonna be a problem for Halsin (who I still can't believe that he's actually gonna be romancable, like YESSSSS!!!), Astarion might prove a little more difficult, with how much that stupid wet cat of a man disapproved of my choices XD (I honestly don't remember if I still got him for the romance scene despite that). Like, for once I'm leaning more to the "I can fix him, I can make him better" side because it would just make things easier for me (Because as much as I personally love villains and bad guys, I really can't choose the "bad" options in games even if I want to lol) and it would be good character development for him, some may find it boring but I think it'd be kinda sweet.
This is like my main concern about all the options (silly I know, but I just want all my faves in one playthrough), aside from the "I want to make sure I get a sort of a good ending" thing.
I know the game isn't even out yet and I'm probably over thinking and over complicating things, but I really hope, with how much effort and thought were put into this game, they would've accounted for such a possible playstyle? Especially from how popular Halsin and Astarion seem to be. And if I can romance them together, it would be even better, simply because it'll save me from having to do more than 1 one playthrough XD
I know it's all about replaying the game and choosing all the different options and the rp and how you get certain things based on your race and class and stuff, but I kinda get bored easily if I have to repeat things.
Maaaan, this turned out waaaaaaaay longer than I thought it would be, can you tell that I'm pretty excited about this game? Lol
And please note that I know next to nothing about D&D lore so if anyone knows where I can learn at least the basic stuff, preferably videos, please let me know!!

𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋
This is more-so for ME, ( pom stoopid and took too long to make this ) but applies vice versa as well!
Please LIKE if it’s okay for me to do the following:
Tumblr media
➤  Send starters, asks, meme asks to your muse(s)! ➤  IM you to become friends, not just partners! ➤  Add your Discord ( if you have one! ) ➤  Make graphics ( Promos, HCs, drawings ) of our muses! ➤  Send shipping / fluff things to your muse! ( totally optional, this can be family based, platonic, or romantic! ) ➤  I can tag you in my musings / visage posts if your muse is a part of it. ➤  Basically come to you to plot, bother your muse or just be a friend, someone you can confide in, someone you can tell all your RP desires to, and hopefully I can fulfill some of them! ➤  Reblog asks to turn them into threads.
I ask these because I'm never really sure what I can and can't do?? If that makes sense?? Obviously I read everyone's rules and boundaries constantly to make sure I'm not overstepping or anything of the sort, but this is just like... for me to know, y'know?
These also apply the other way around!! You're more than welcome to do any and all of the above!! You don't need to ask me, but if you'd prefer to do that then that's totally fine!! ♡
If you want to ship something?? Throw the idea at me!! You want to plot?? I'm totally down for it. I've got a massive goldfish memory but I swear I value everything each one of you have given / offered / written with me.
I know a lot of people aren't okay with turning asks into threads and I DO know who those people are so you don't need to worry about that, but for those who would LIKE to do that, I 100% encourage it and welcome it. I find turning asks into threads a lot easier most times, they can be so fun to bounce off of and can turn into something beautiful, so never feel like reblogging / responding to an ask is a bad thing bc god no PLEASE DO IT. All I ask is that you link your response to me JUST IN CASE Tumblr eats it.

this or that? tag!
i was tagged by @thewardenofwinter! you can find their post here! i am combing through my tags to see which ones i'm able to participate in. thank you for giving me plenty of options teehee.
historical or futuristic
i feel like it's much easier to do something historical considering there is already something to build off of? and you have to pull a lot less shit out of your ass, especially considering you can have easy reference for clothing and such. a lot of my rps (shhh) are more historical than modern.
the opening or closing chapter
while i am fully aware of how hard openings are— i love endings. i have yet to write one, but they are so bittersweet. i think i prefer it more out of anticipation.
light+fluffy or dark+gritty
give me the dirt and blood beneath the nails, the pining, the bad boy. in fact, give me the castlevania style shit. give me all of that. in fact, i'll do it myself.
animal companion or found family
in project tsa the mc Venus does have a cat named Farah, but i think found family is so so so sweet. theres just something about it.
horror or romance
romance is so fun. i'm getting into establishing a relationship with some charachters and i think they're going to be absolute sweeties. i also like romance between villians? like the bad guy should get the girl, i'm not even sorry.
hard magic system or soft magic system
i feel like it is so much easier when a magic system is strict and linear. i'm going to have to write one myself for some projects, but especially project labyrinth.
standalone or series
i can see some fulfillment in a standalone, but i can see the appeal of a series. i actually prefer a series, especially if it's slow burn, it won't feel rushed, and if it's the 'a touch of' series, just throw it away.
one project at a time or always juggling 2+
researching for 'endless wip' as we speak.
one award winner or one bestseller
now i aint sayin she a golddigger...
fantasy or sci-fi
give me a sexy mentally ill vampire with mommy and daddy issues. thats all i fuckin want (alucard from castlevania).
character description or setting description
as long as youre not telling me that the mcs brown orbs pierced her own in the mirror as she pulled her shiny, chocolate brown hair pulled into a bun to begin her day so she can have cereal for breakfast before school— then i'm cool. i'd truly rather hear about the sky. if the sun burned like a fluorescent lightbulb in a classroom at 8am— I want that shit.
first draft or final draft
i suppose first! i've not made it to a final yet. i hope i can sometime soon, i want that fulfillment of ending something.
love triangle in everything or no romantic arcs
if there is anything to be learned from twilight— it is the fact that love triangles fucking suck. especially when both characters are unstable as shit, one of them being wildly suicidal and the other has some insane anger issues. and besides, the mc always ends up choosing the douchey dude anyhow.
constant sandstorm or rainstorm
my boyfriend made me fall in love with rain. i've learned to tolerate thunder.
as per usual, i have no one to tag, so i will leave the floor open!

𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐲
Hello friends! I’m just a sleepy girl excited to write my favorite female canon muses, so welcome to my messy independent multi-muse blog corner of Tumblr. I'm thrilled you're here!
— Penned by L. she/her. 25+. cst. uses beta editor only. discord RP optional.
— Featuring my favorite female canon MUSES from various anime and TV show/movie fandoms.
— If you're interested, feel free to send in a Prompt/Meme or an Unprompted Ask if you'd like to get started that way! Just specify muse~ (I'm ridiculously shy so if I don’t make the first move that’s why!💕) You’re more than welcome to continue them with a reply!
— RULES ARE UNDER THE READ MORE.
Welcome to my blog, I appreciate you taking an interest! — This is an independent, selective, canon adjacent, canon divergent, multi-fandom, multi-ship & multi-muse blog. — Mun is 25+ with 10 years of RP experience, so anyone under 21 is kindly requested to not interact.  — The female canon muses are from various anime and TV show fandoms, and I will continuously be editing my list. — Please advise there will be triggering themes of violence and gore on this blog. Reader discretion is advised as I do not tag my posts unless privately requested.
— This blog is going to be low activity as I have real life and work to juggle. As much as I'd love to do rapid-fire threads all day every day this just isn't possible. I promise promise promise I love all of our threads and put a lot of thought into them when I am able to write them. Discord is a little easier for the rapid-fire if you're interested, just send me a DM! Otherwise, please give me a nudge to remind me if I owe you a response.
— FEEL FREE to take your time as well. I’ll always be here when you’re ready to dive back in just as excited and raring to go when I get your reply! —  I do use Beta Editor. I write novella style descriptive replies and use small font. I have a tendency to let my muse carry me but please do not feel the need to match length if I get carried away. — I will only RP with canon not OC siblings of my muses as I unfortunately do not have the time to research and read your bios that you have put all your hearts and souls into. Thank you for your understanding! — My big request: please do not be an asshole. If you don’t like my portrayal, that’s fine. I’m doing this for fun and I want this to be a safe space for everyone I interact with. There’s a block button for that. — Ghosting happens, I understand and respect your boundaries and decisions. That being said, I will do the same should I feel uncomfortable and hope you respect my choice as well. — I will block blogs that revolve around triggering themes such as incest and pedophilia. — I adore shipping! Most likely I’m wishing for the same canon ship you are. As mentioned, I do go by chemistry, so it doesn’t always have to be romantic if our characters aren’t vibing there. Platonic is always just as ANGSTY. I’m flexible, and please don’t hesitate to spam me with your musings. I’m here for it! I do have a tendency to write romantically, so please specify if you’d prefer strictly platonic.

Saiki K Roleplayer List!
NSFW Edition
If you're interested in roleplaying characters from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K with other people, reply to this post with the following info:
Characters you like to play
Characters you'd like the other person to play
Overall genre of roleplay you're looking for (ex. Slice of life, romance, erotica, drama, angst, AU, etc.)
Is there a SFW version of this post?
Yes, check it out!
