If you really want to garner a culture that prevents harm rather than simply reacting to it, you need to make causing harm something that can be recovered from. It can't be fucking shameful, because then people hide it. People will avoid pain, so threats of punishment aren't fucking useful. And if you believe doing The Bad Things will get you a world of hurt, then you're gonna get defensive if someone tries to approach you about your own harmful habits!!

I've seen it so many fuckin times, dude, it's insane. Someone will try to be like "hey, you could do this better" or "hey, the way you x hurts me" and instead of like, having a conversation, that person will get up in arms about how they weren't ~being bad.~ Whether it's trying to avoid blame or minimize how bad people think it is, the end result is that nothing actually gets dealt with because people are too busy trying to avoid being seen as a fuckin' sinner.

Who gives a fuck about being a good person? What does "good personhood" actually do? Best I can tell, it's just this label people get to have that says "Don't come after me, your target is someone else." Because if you ask anyone, being a Good Person is about your actions. So... why not just look at those? Ditch the shorthand that flattens everything, and risk the fucking nuance. If you don't have to worry about maintaining your status as a "good person," then suddenly it stops being so scary to scrutinize the ways in which you can actually improve.

And it's not even like you can just, like, get rid of all "bad people" and solve harm forever. If your solution to the ills of humanity can be boiled down to "if we just point a big enough gun at anyone who Breaks The Good Person Rules, no one will want to break them!" then, sorry to break it to you, but you're a fascist, no matter what values you purport to be championing. You still intend to use force to enforce them, and by enshrining those values as The Good Ones, you blind yourself to your own biases and flaws. There's always gonna be pain. Always gonna be conflict. There's just too fuckin' many people out there to force the world to homogenize under a set of values that no one deviates from. So you need to be flexible, and you need to let good and bad exist side by side as shades of gray. You need to think of harm reduction not as a destination you reach by restricting the agency People Who Will Do Harm, but as a complex network of social safety nets that ensure that people who wind up in danger have multiple avenues with which to protect themselves or escape that danger, and ensure that the ones who cause that danger have ways to get help.

The world is more complicated than a binary of who's an abuser and who's a victim. People are more complicated than simple predisposition to hurting others. There will never be a set of values so all-encompassing as to ensure no one ever gets hurt if they're strictly adhered to, and there will never be a person on earth so perfect they never fuck up practicing those values. So you gotta fuckin adapt, man.

No more heroes and villains. No more good and bad people. you're more than that, I'm more than that. There's no shortcuts to heaven, no tickets to hell. You just gotta do the best you can with what you have, and course correct as you learn more stuff. What matters is the impact of our actions- they land how they land and we deal with it after. the weird attitude supposedly body positive people have towards people with restrictive eating disorders is appalling. theyre examples of "diet culture" gone too far, and theyre pitied, but theyre also treated as vindictive and fatphobic just for existing and struggling. people hear the words "eating disorder" and squirm in their seats as if people with eds are the evil ones for having those issues. people are fascinated with eating disorders and disgusted by the thought of them. they use them as a part of their anti diet culture argument and then convict them morally in the same breath.

most people with eating disorders struggle on and off for their ENTIRE life and expecting them to just "get better" so they dont make you upset is dumb as hell. like okay for example only 20% of anorexia patients make a full recovery, 20% die, and 60% consistently struggle their entire life. deeming 60% of sufferers of a mental illness as evil and unworthy of love is absurd.

That Rhaenyra offered to merge her and Alicent's line in a reasonable manner and never showed any indication she would harm Alicent or her children (that Alicent was in fact the one to harm Rhaenyra/try to harm her children)

Like it was hard to get why people were fervently pro-Green with just F&B because the setup was different, but with HOTD it's like...well it really reflects poorly on people that they prefer Aegon to Rhaenyra. Ya know, When it comes to kill gen 1 and 2 synths- literally no one has a problem with. They’re just like Raiders and Gunners and Rust Devils and yada yada yada.

But gen 3s? The ones that look, that act, that think, that feel, that love, that hate, that bleed? I don’t think any of them could willing pull the trigger unless prompted too, unless we’re talking bout Gage, Cait, and X6. Then yeah, they don’t care.

Struges is a snyth and yet, he’s just a man trying to live in a world that wants him dead. He has done no harm to the world and those who inhabit it unless prompted to do such. I don’t think anyone could reason with themselves to pull the trigger and not have major mental draw backs.

Roger Warwick knows he’s a replacement, he knows he’s a synth, knows that his whole purpose is watch over some stupid plants. But yet, he refers to everyone as his kids and wife, he’s not hostile when you blow up the institute. He just lives his life, probably with a tremendous amount of guilt resting on his shoulder but he lives, and he loves his family. (Granted, I can see some of them pulling the trigger on him but then they’d have to deal with the guilt of killing a ‘man’ who just wanted to live.)

Ignoring BB, The BoS says to kill them but why? Why kill someone that presents no harm to anything? Why blow the head off of some ones lover, some ones parent, some ones friend when all they did was exist against their will. When they had absolutely no choice in the matter at hand. I don’t think Danse could feasibly kill a Gen 3 that hasn’t committed a crime to warrant an end to their life and if he had too then he’d never forgive himself.

I think the only who’s could kill a snyth that just wanted to live would be Cait, Gage, and X6. X6 is a courser, he hunts rouge Synths, he doesn’t kill them but I see him doing such without a second thought. Gage and Cait? Well, I imagine she equally hates ever species and Gage is a raider, he don't give two flying fucks. 

Mac’s a lil tricky considering his reaction to BB and Danse and his job but deep down, he can’t pull the trigger on a father or mother, he has a son of his own, what kinda of shitty person pulls the trigger on a fellow parent? force some kid to live without a parent? He couldn’t do that, no amount of cap’s in the world could convince him to do such. This is totally circumstantial too, ya’know? yeah they may be a parent but like... they killed an entire town and set fire to everything sooo. 

Everything boils down to be circumstantial too but I can’t go writing about all the ands, the buts, the what if’s ya’know. Then I’d be here until the end of time coming up with the same situation with minor detail changes. so i used to self harm and i think this is pretty well known since i included it in parasite and what not

i started in 2016, i was 16 and i had scars all down my arms and i always wore sweaters, jackets, long sleeves etc

btw, i live in TEXAS where it’s hotter than hell so i would sweat my ass off and ppl would be like girl take off your jacket but i would always say i was fine even though i was dying

i ended up doing it until i was 17/18 without anyone noticing until i overdosed and went to the hospital (1st suicide attempt) and they saw the cuts

when i woke up i got help and sent to a mental facility and got some cute socks 😍 (sorry humor is my coping mechanism) and i ended up getting clean from self harm and drugs

i was clean for maybe an entire year but i would get random urges but i would just try to push them down or resorted to other forms of self harm like pinching myself until i bled or pulling my hair until it came out or punching walls/glass

when i turned 19, i got raped and i ended up going down hill again and start to self harm again and doing drugs again

my second suicide attempt happens after i slit my wrists again and endured blood loss and had to go to the hospital AGAIN and got cute socks AGAIN

i think i didn’t get better until i was 21 and it was only because i moved away from everything that was making me depressed. i left my family, friends, school, etc behind and started a new life in another town with my dad (my parents are divorced)

moral of this depressing ass story is i didn’t magically get clean one day. that’s not real. people who actually deal with self harm never just get better one day. it’s not possible because it’s an illness, it’s an addiction and i know that first hand

the best piece of advice i can give you is to find a pattern. find what makes you want to cut yourself and try your absolute hardest to stay away from it or get rid of it even if it hurts like a bitch

leaving everything behind hurt so bad, saying goodbye to some and just disappearing on others hurt but my mental health has never been better

there are times where if things get bad, i’ll randomly get the urges too but i think i’ve gotten much better at convincing myself it’s not worth it

i’m stuck with scars that are BARELY fading away because of something i did years ago and sometimes it makes me really sad when i feel insecure about wearing certain things that expose my arms or when someone points it out

at the time, i just had so much disgust and hatred for myself that i wanted to cause myself pain. i felt like i deserved it. i deserved to hurt, i deserved to bleed

and then there was times where i was so depressed and numb that i would cut myself just to feel something, just to see if i was alive

i regret it so fucking much i wish i could go back and hug my 16 year old self and beg her not to do those things and be kinder to herself and love herself some more

i’m legit tearing up while writing this because the idea of someone feeling so low of themselves that they feel the need to punish themselves breaks my heart so badly because no one deserves that.

i hope whatever you’re going through gets better and i hope you never get the urge to hurt yourself again because from someone who committed self harm in many different forms for YEARS i can tell you personally it’s not worth it

it won’t take the pain away, it won’t change anything, it won’t make you feel better

Karen Travers is most certainly a man well-accustomed to pain. Each failure served to contribute more and more into his already overwhelming grief. The sheer weight of his duty, stretched across innumerable timelines, aided in mentally destroying him -- more than he already had been. He could never be entirely certain if Luka was happier with his absence, either.

But there appears to be a much deeper aspect of pain locked within Karen. The DLC mentions that he was sold to the government for their illicit experiments, a treatment Luka was likely subjected to as well. The shame of siring duds seemed to be too much for their father to bear. He had to make them normal in some fashion -- anything would be better than what he had.

This kind of parental rejection is excruciating to bear as a child. It will remain with you for a lifetime. Across several, it is likely magnified. To have to relive it a thousand times over must have driven Karen to the brink of madness. Perhaps even he was unsure about it. Perhaps he buried it all the same -- it isn't as if he had any other choice.

Not much is truly stated of the Travers' home life before the OSF, but it was not a healthy one. There are strong implications of abuse in the scant details given. For one, we don't know just how prominent the Travers patriarch was during the boys' childhood. He was likely prone to committing physical violence, if Karen's unusually high pain tolerance is anything to go by. The Travers family patriarch was also likely to be quite verbally and emotionally abusive. In a military organization like the OSF, why, it's not all that different from home -- the top brass and drill sergeants don't seem to be too dissimilar.

Karen's distance and aloofness very much appear to be a defense mechanism. For him to act out so frequently in basic training, to receive as many write-ups as he did, speaks volumes about what his home life had been. Perhaps it was a way to assert dominance... or perhaps he was daring them to strike. With his then-newly implanted abilities, the sky was the limit, wasn't it? He wasn't quite able to protect himself and Luka... but now, he could.

Even Luka's obsession with working out has much to do with his terrible home life. It is a more passive defense mechanism compared to his brother's; constant exercise aids to combat the throes of depression. It also contributes to physical strength... but, every time he looks in the mirror, what does he see? A child who can't even defend himself? Can Luka ever allow himself to let his guard down?

Any inkling of abuse occurring in the Travers household was kept under wraps. If the Travers patriarch was a man of high standing, then he likely had a network of close friends reporting on any "negative criticism". Karen may have been too afraid to discuss the truth with Fubuki and Alice. His inclination towards stoicism aided to mask any hurt he felt. At the same time, it served to harm Karen further, locking all his pain deeper within. It's little wonder that Karen speaks through his eyes -- eyes that are a window into a tormented soul.

How often had Karen craved to speak out and loosen his burdens, only for the familiar wave of terror to silence such a wish? Did he watch Fubuki with envy twisting his insides, bitter about a freedom long since denied? ... Would Fubuki even care? Did Karen prefer the loneliness of solitude, rather than endure the shame?

It's easier to keep other people at arms' length. Most of the time, they're too self absorbed to care about anyone other than themselves. Even if they seem safe enough, few -- if any -- can be trusted. Tell someone a secret, and the next day it will be the talk of the town. Talk about yourself and the things you really want, and someone else will run roughshod over you -- you're just a dud. You're not worth the attention. You might have artificially gifted powers, sure, but give the public an inch and they'll be quick to remind you of your worthlessness. But they sure love to grand-stand about the other fun issues! To remain closed off is to be safe; no one can hurt you if they don't know where to make you bleed.

Not to mention, the experimentation itself must have been excruciating. Merely tampering with the brain causes all sorts of horrid side effects. Brain Eater, if it's even a naturally-occurring power -- highly doubtful, given New Himuka's fondness for clandestine research -- is quite a volatile power. Perhaps it's even unstable. Early usage of the power may have sent Karen into severe convulsions. Maybe even vomiting, foaming at the mouth from the sheer, inescapable agony, with his arms and legs splaying bonelessly. Karen may have had to train his already high pain tolerance into something astronomical. It isn't as if anyone ever cared to check on him. There were were likely no objections from his immediate family when he was sold off and subsequently handed over to the OSF.

As a Septentrion of high standing, it must be even worse for him. With so many eyes upon him, Karen has to bury any modicum of weakness. The pressure crushes him tenfold. He has to overtax his brain for the sake of the OSF. How much worse are his seizures? How often has Karen been forced to drag his uncooperative limbs to a more secluded section of the battlefield, desperate to keep his suffering clear of prying eyes? Has he ever been forced to push it down in front of his platoon, even as the spasms gradually worsen? When he's found an isolated spot, does he ever allow himself to ever be completely vulnerable? He may not even permit himself that -- for all he knows, someone could have followed him. It doesn't take much to tempt an opportunity for blackmail. He may never feel safe enough to be completely vulnerable.

It doesn't seem to be often remarked upon, but Karen is extremely expressive. His eyes and body language are very meticulously arranged and animated. He may not be speaking in a conventional manner, but he is speaking, nonetheless. When irritation, defiance, and anger are not at the forefront, there is a notable sorrow. A silent pleading, even. The rare times when he is at his most vulnerable is when it is the most blatant. It seems to add to the tragedy of his character, in the end. Karen carries far more pain than what the plot completely touches upon... as quietly as he can manage. Did he ever have any other choice?

How to spot a smear campaign:

Victims “crimes” will be enlarged, and even if they’re small missteps, they will be treated as if only the worst person on the planet would do such a thing

Accusations against the victim will always be a reach, aka, they did ‘this little thing’ but it actually means they’re a racist/murderer/genocide supporter/fascist/have blood on their hands, even when the person’s actions never conformed to those crimes

All and any actions of the victims will be misinterpreted in the worst possible way, anything the person does will be taken as an offense and intentions will be read as hostile and manipulative, regardless of how clear they are

All victim’s actions will be taken out of context; i.e., victim said something cruel to someone, but they take out the context of the victim being abused, threatened, tortured, forced into defense mode and finally attacking out of desperation to defend themselves and get free

The victim will commonly get provoked into giving a bad reaction, (anyone gets defensive if they’re accused of the crimes they never did, or simply triggering insults until they snap), and the reaction will become the new ‘proof’ that the victim is in fact, evil and guilty

A lot of pressure will be put on you to react ‘correctly’ to the smear campaign; if you don’t accept to demonize this person at once, you’re getting scrutinized, shamed for your lack of morality, told that you support all these horrid things and that you are just as despicable

You will notice a trend of people ganging together based on their demonization of the victim; they will set a standard where you’re accepted and welcome if only you also will demonize and hate this person, and if you don’t, you’re blocked, cast out, and accused of causing harm

It will feel very easy to accept to demonize this person, and going against it will feel risky, like going against the grain, doubting the word of the many and risking being demonized yourself.

The smear campaign continues all the way until the victim is chased out of the community and denied a voice, even if the victim commits no further crimes, awful things will be said about them, their past ‘misdeeds’ continually brought up, until the victim is commonly believed to be worthless, and becomes completely isolated, scared of society and alone

There will be no limit to what is considered okay to do to the victim of a smear campaign; even if the victim is accused of minor bad behavior, it will become okay to threaten, insult, shout slurs, trigger, provoke, humiliate, manipulate, and repeat any kind of abusive behavior to the victim, all because 'they’re bad so they deserve it’.

People leading the smear campaign will switch between being 'extremely grossed out and enraged’ to showing absolute joy and satisfaction when they find a new reason to demonize and smear the victim. People truly horrified of someone’s actions do not get a leap of joy when a new disaster happens, they’re not beside themselves to abuse the perpetrator all over again.

It will never, ever be acceptable to show any mercy to the victim. Forgiveness is out of the question, trying to understand them is out of the question. Even reading or listening to what this person is saying will be banned and forbidden, unless it’s for humiliating purposes. They will be shown as absolutely irredeemable, and associating yourself with them as evil and unforgivable. You will be instructed to block or unfollow or report the person based on what you’re told, without any significant proof.

Do not fall for smear campaigns. If a large amount of people all agree that a person is the worst, but their story is exaggerated, out of context, sounds fictional, and doesn’t show any proof, and the people switch from being enraged to eager, doubt it. Participating in a smear campaign will help the abusers isolate and abuse someone, and you do not want to be a part of it. They will also smear anyone who stands up to their abuse, so you’re helping the abusers to create a place where pointing out abuse gets you cast out of the community.

Crack would be healthier.  Hunter Biden is finally useful.  A ceaseless addiction to Donald Trump is destroying the minds of those hooked.  Acting like the atrocious hobby is enjoyable represents the worst of many parts.  As always, unfortunate souls who find themselves around dirtbags are harmed the most.

The compulsion to make every last topic about a guy who I’d like to remind all has been out of that one office for a couple years now is worse than traditional drugs.  Sure, you’ll miss your teeth, but you can drink smoothies.  Both his most zealous adherents and ardent resisters need him around to feel important, which causes more damage than having to smile with one’s mouth closed for photos.

Grating participants are unwilling to kick the worst habit.  They’re not unable: it’s just that quitting would take fortitude.  Blame addiction for the unwillingness to divorce someone who specializes in it.

Second marriages don’t work out for those repeating errors that doomed the first ones.  Ask someone who decided multiple times that a lifetime commitment came with an asterisk.  Even Trump hasn’t been foolish enough to marry the same person twice.  Display absolute loyalty to someone who shows none of it.

Flaccid goons remain blinded by gold.  That’s the color and not the rather valuable metal.  This era is helpful if creating an example of devotion to delusion is useful. The ultimate in phoniness conned suckers so thoroughly that there’s either no resistance to begin with or an unwillingness to back down after this much commitment.  Anyone who could actually endure his presidency and proclaim they want to double down will buy any real estate you can sell.

It’s not just his cultists but their alleged worst enemies who crave ceaseless conflict.  Alleged foes wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if he were finally banished to obscurity like they claim is their utmost desire.  The need for a foil reflects a fear of Holmes without Moriarity, only with affected outrage replacing cleverness.

Each faction awaits not-so-secret orders.  It’s not like they’ll refuse to obey.  Rugged individualists wouldn’t know what to do with themselves without respective gangs issuing preprogrammed responses.  LARPers were already without purpose before getting too deeply into character.

Political hooligan firms would find themselves with nothing to do if Emmanuel Extra Goldstein disappeared.  Superheroes are relegated to picking up litter.  Also, their powers are limited to kvetching about the results of their policies and noticing Trump is an orangish hue.  Tiresome resisters think they’re battling Lex Luthor while sitting in bedrooms reading comics while lounging on Superman sheets.

The chief side effect of getting hooked on the outrage is constant exhaustion.  Those not indulging are stricken, as well.  The similarly warped either think constant moaning defines robust manly awesomeness or serves as evidence Satan can possess pompous nitwits.  They’re still suckered into playing his game either way.  Marks can walk away just like gamblers did to his impossibly gaudy Atlantic City casinos.

The secret that they seek the same goal is the only way for those sick of watching combatants shriek at each other enjoy the match.  Fervent faux combat participants don’t heed anything as trifling as policy results.  Fans of ticking off libs ignore his adoration of tariffs, enthusiasm for lockdowns, and lust for debt.  You may have noticed that the embodiment of egomaniacs pursued an unnerving quantity of liberal policies, but only if you noticed results and not claims.  Melodrama is exactly what both sides want in nostalgia for the worst moments.

Haven’t you ever hated both Super Bowl participants?  Cheer for Buffalo chicken dip instead.  The playoffs are still going in the contemptible sport of politics.  These are not the only sides despite the binary nature assured to us by both regrettable sides.  Republicans who just want a few cabinet agencies banished to Siberia remain uninterested in a shady religion based on a pyramid scheme.

The need for a central figure to genuflect to or flip off creates bipartisanship of the wrong kind.  The only thing worse than obsessing over one person is when it’s this person.  Normal humans were beyond over this shtick two election cycles ago.  Heck, Trump’s been boring since it became clear he was lousy at business in direct inversive proportion to his boasting around the time he boasted of taking on the NFL while losing to it.  The biggest faker we’ve ever encountered keeps announcing who he is if some people would like to learn one of these decades.

Worshiping a horse’s ass is exactly what this nation was founded to oppose.  The worst sort of royalty is selected by subjects.  Feeling entitled without earning.  Charles III has made more honest dollars.

Vowing to move past the most deliberately unpleasant human is the best way into the future.  Acting as if the only antidote to Biden is a second poisonous dose.  We can get back to arguing about why Democrats screw up everything rather than focusing on a longtime Democrat’s proclamations.

It’s tough to connect with anyone who’s not sick of the bickering.  Falling for obnoxiousness’s primary example is as dull as getting outraged by it.  It should take nearly this long to learn that tantrums stop upon ignoring them.  Trump won’t learn before he’s 80.  The last holdouts on both sides of a tiresome slap fight should finally learn now.

Splinter and Draxum’s personal brand of heroism

With Splinter, I think he has the simpler mindset of Heroism.

“I will help anyone that needs it when I come across them, I won’t let others get hurt if I have the ability to prevent it and I will not let someone hurt others because hurting others is cruel.” kind of deal ya know?

The man was born and raised to further a family duty. almost all his life Splinter was told that their family’s duty and destiny is to die sacrificing himself for the sake of this Grand prophecy.

A prophecy that at the time he believed only to be just some kind of “bogyman”, a dumb nonsensical prophecy that All of his Family had sacrificed (wasted) their life over. his father, mother, and any other family was gone, he was alone with his grandfather and even then he was still expected to do the same thing as the rest of the Hamato.

 With Splinter, he doesn’t want to do anything to do with some Grand purpose of saving the world. He wanted what the rest of the Hamato family didn’t have, a life beyond duty a life for his own happiness.

With Splinter, he will still be a good person and help someone when they come to him for help or when he sees something that may cause others harm. But he won’t dedicate all his life to fixing something that he can't understand or is impossible to reach.  He has a life that he could finally enjoy and as long as his close ones are safe he is content with it.

Of course, in the end, Splinter does get character development in the form of his sons and also the fact that “oh shit the bogyman is real what other nightmarish creature Grandpa told me was true??”.

but it doesn't really change his brand of heroism it is still simple, if the monsters are arriving he will prevent it, if the monsters have already arrived then he will do anything to stop it. if anyone comes to him for aid he shall provide it.

Draxum on the other hand is the complete opposite.

unlike Splinter who’s Heroic heart is more on “tamer” scales, Draxum’s Heroic heart is on the more… “grandeur” side.

With Draxum his flaw is that he cares way too much and will do way too much.

His story was that he discovered a prophecy about the Yokai citizens doomed by Humanity.

The man cared so much about his people and his home that he Begged the Councils to do something about it, there are many ways for him to prevent that prophecy but the man chooses to destroy humanity itself.

Now that is crazy talk and the council knows it is crazy so they deny him.

Of course, he didn't take it well and decided to abandon all morals and attempt to play god, even if it caused him to be turned into a criminal

With Draxum, everything he does or works on will always have his full commitment, he doesn’t do anything half and half. When Huginn and Muninn drag him into a musical about himself, the Man SLAYED his performance.

when he was dragged into becoming a fukin Lunch Lady he aims to be the fuking best lunch lady of them all, cutting the school budget for the student food, unlike anything the school staff have ever seen before.

And When Draxum does something “heroic” he goes 100% in. he spends all of his resources and research in finding a way to “save” the Yokais from humans. He first wanted to create a living weapon that he could raise to be the only best warrior that the Yokai could rely on.

When that shit failed he moves on with turning the Humans into monsters themselves, that way the Humans can be destroyed by their own kind.

when that shit ain't going as good as he wanted them to he then was offered this Magic armor that can grant him the Power to do the job himself and he says fuck it let's go.

That thing failed again and the only reason he didn’t get back again was that this time he was All Juiced up, he was now powerless. Because this time Mikey got to him first and lent him a hand.

I know someone who's married to an insane person that tried to kill them, but stays solely to keep their kid safe and the systems aren't working because it's America, he's the only one who works, and he's clearly, only ever suffering. Seriously outside of republican politics, trans people really have it better than any ANY other minority out there. But uh, as far as I see, Florida is a shithole as always, and everywhere else is incapable of learning or normalizing because trans people accept NOTHING less than 250% maximum attention, affection, and knowledge.

thoughts on ancestor work

I don’t post a lot of spiritual stuff on here but I have a LOT of thoughts and feelings when it comes to genealogy and ancestor work. There’s a lot of white people who are hesitant to really look deep into their ancestry, especially if they’re here in the USA because, well. (WAVES HANDS AT ALL OF AMERICAN HISTORY)

That’s understandable! When I was starting genealogy even before I got back into spirituality I came into it knowing that I was going to find some rough information. I have ancestors that landed on this continent in the 1600 and 1700s. I know there’s tons of skeletons in the closet. However... this is where things get too narrowly defined and it’s becoming a pet peeve when I see it happen online: you will have ancestors that committed atrocities but you will also have ancestors that did not. You cannot paint all of your european ancestors with a broad villain brush.

I have Union ancestors, Confederate ancestors, ancestors who enslaved others, ancestors who were violently colonized and/or displaced, Salem witch trial accuser ancestors, recent immigrant ancestors (1800s ish), farmer ancestors, labor ancestors, ancestors who worked daily with the founding fathers, and probably so much more. Part of ancestor work is holding all of that and doing better in this lifetime as you are.

For example, I don’t forgive my slaver ancestors because that forgiveness is not mine to give. What I do now as their living descendant is that I make sure that I don’t perpetuate racism and learn about how I can destroy the structures of systemic racism in order to undo that harmful legacy. Acting in the present is a form of ancestor work. Some people even believe that the spirit can still continue to evolve after death, so for like... queer people, they may look at their ancestors and go “there is no way in hell that they’ll accept me” but have you ever considered that you have queer ancestors? You may not know who they are by name but they know you.

Some people also will only work with ancestors who will help them become the best possible version of themselves. For me, I think that would look like trying to reconnect with my Indigenous roots but not calling upon George Washington Davis for anything. Or, alternatively, invoking GWD specifically to rebel against everything that he believed to demonstrate that the choices he made in his lifetime were violent and harmful, and that as his descendant I’m trying to do what I can to break that cycle. See what I can do, George? See how I know your legacy and know everything that you believed in and fought for? I believe that it’s bullshit and I refuse to stand for it.

What got me on this tangent is someone I follow was talking about how she doesn’t do ancestor work because a lot of her family trauma is meant to be worked out through therapy. That’s valid, and also I believe that therapy can function as a form of ancestor work. You know how often I think about the horrors that my ancestors went through and how they had no access to therapy? I honor them by taking care of my mental health now, as I am as their descendant.

I eat with my ancestors. I invite them to taste flavors they didn’t have in their lifetimes. I invite them to sit with me when I breathe if I’m having a bad day so they could see that their descendant has resources available to cope with trauma. I invite them in to show that their legacy may not be what they expected but is trying constantly to make their own little world and the world around them better. I invite my Yurok and Métis ancestors specifically into my circle to show them that it’s okay and that I’m safe. That they’re safe with me now. That I won’t let anyone hurt them again.
