Sorry if this is is a weird question, but how do you draw so many different shapes and poses so fluidly?

(I have a drawing style based on realism and I'm having a lot of trouble finding ways to adapt to different poses and expressions in a way that makes sense to me)

Not weird at all!  A lot of my process is breaking things down into simple shapes and making silly mental notes to myself like “ the middle finger is usually always longer than all the other fingers” and “ overlap this line here to make the arm bend look more believable” fjhgsdjhfsdgf

Now, I could spend time drawing out the musculoskeletal structure of everything and all the joints and where everything goes, but that’s extremely boring to me and i’m impatient. So I opt for simple color blocking the silhouettes of shapes. Just enough so I know what I can manipulate, and how. Besides, you can always add details later. Focusing on details immediately is the quickest way to get frustrated, no matter what kind of style you have. Take. Your. Time!!!!

The way I approach it is similar to tweening in animation, or the intermediate frames between two key frames. Y’know, those frames you see when you pause something and the character looks stretched out/disfigured ? Those frames are what create more movement. Same can be applied to the drawing process! Lets look at this lil doodle here:

Sure, the subtle stretch of the circle shows decently enough that these two both have the circle, and want it, and don’t want each other to have it, but it doesn’t really feel like it, does it? buuuuuuuuuuut..

If we stretch it a lil bit and emphasize the STREEEETCH (and the effect of it on the poses respectively), it looks a lot more exaggerated, which makes it more fluid. You get a better sense of the tug of war between these two. Who will win? Will the circle stay in one piece?? Did these two ever learn the concept of sharing???? What matters is you can see the movement a lot more clearly.  Especially in tandem with the first doodle. There WILL be a victor here.

You can apply this to basically any shape! Once you break down your shapes, see how they fit with the movement of what you’re drawing. Stretch and squish and squeeze as needed. Combining curves with straights aids in bringing more movement by allowing some contrast to show where the stress of the movement is the highest/most influential. OH also...

DRAW THROUGH YOUR SHAPES!!! This helps you follow the form a bit easier, which will lead to more coherent movement throughout your drawings!

You can see where i’ve  kept the initial lines and where i’ve drawn the back of the head and how it feeds into the neck, which then feeds into how I “attach” the shoulders to the torso. This also provides consistency, which I find is super helpful in guiding me to where the “flow” of the pose is going or more prominent. You can (sorta) see where I made the right eye slope a bit upwards to follow the contour of the purple circle I used for the initial headshape. The distortion makes it look more dynamic, even when there isnt any real movement going on here. It provides depth and feel and a sense of where these shapes are sitting in relation to other shapes.

(its a messy sketch, but hopefully you can see where I was goin’ with it LOL).

Learning to abuse foreshortening is also a good way to get some fluidity in your poses/expressions. The whole concept relies on making a deal with perspective to elongate, overlap, and compress shapes to “fit” within the composition. It might also help to try figuring out which edges and contours are more important to your composition, and accentuate them as well!

I hope this helps aid you somewhat in your quest to figuring out how to make sense of things in your style, n good luck! <:

ayano is not difficult to imagine as a mom. she's really sweet but scary when angry yknow. probably more than shintaro. well obviously a lot more than shintaro. kids go to him before her when theyre in trouble bc he's a huge pushover and cant handle being mad at them for over a minute. LOL ERMM ERMMM i think ayano's parent flaw (IM GETTING INTO THAT NO ONE IS A PERFECT PARENT) is that shes REALLY into THERE ARE NO SECRETS IN THE FAMILY and struggles giving her kids space bc she's insanely scared of any of them hurting similarly to how she has in the past. like it comes from a good place but it's definitely a little awkward and makes ayano kind of an overbearing parent? not SUPER like she's not controlling or takes away their privacy or anything but she's like. EMOTIONALLY overbearing. friday night after dinner is emotion time where we sit down as a family and list every positive and negative thing of the week and talk it through😊😊😊😊😊 shes a little crazy but means well u_u but she's really just teaching them healthy communication and how to ask for help etc etc but sometimes it goes too far like she projects too much LOL but it complements well with shintaro bc he's usually like Hey. leave them the fuck alone for a moment and ayanos like AUUGGHH 💔💔💔💔💔💔 ok fine💔 also AGAIN ayame littlest of 4 kids but all others are adopted and came into the family with their own lore and most likely tragic past so ayano is USED TO THE PRECEDURE OF HELPING HER CHILDREN HEAL but ayame is like i was raised in a healthy loving home i have no mental issues and my biggest problem in life is having to go to school bc id rather be playing toys and having fun. and ayano's like what the fuck... shintaro we raised an emotionally stable child and shintaros like I SURE HOPE WE DID?????

takane is also not difficult to imagine i think. sorry takane but... overprotective insane parent she would be fucking INSANE like. takane would be a good mom DO NOT get me wrong definitely the coolest no big deal u can do anything u want kinda parent definitely the fun one definitely the one all next gen kids go to for prank support. you know that pic that's like mom in 1990 helping her kids pass a hard level in super mario. thats takane 100% like she is so COOL but secretly fucking insanely over obsessed protective hypochondriac. like rest in fucking pieces. konoha's the kid arriving to the sleepover with a overnight breathing machine that needs to be plugged in. he scrapes his knee and takane acts like it's the end of the world. haruka not nearly as insane but insane enough to sort of enable takane's overprotectiveness bc he's sorta the same LOL he's not so worried if konoha gets hurt playing but if he coughs 1 time haruka also begins acting like it's the end of the world

konoha is an only kid and ayame has 3 older siblings so haruka+takane and ayano+shintaro are inevitably super different parents bc shintaro and ayano are like experienced and are like the memes of Me when my third kid hits their head (hanging out and not caring) and haruka and takane are like Me when my first kid hits their head (AMBULANCE SIRENS) since im talking abt ayano and takane specifically let me add i think itd be funny if they get into discussions because ayame plays rough (little sister survival) and konoha rides a bike with pillows attached to all his body. so konoha's like coming back home from hanging out with ayame all shaken and hyper and with 1 microscopic scrape and takane's like (shaking) which isnt even ayame's fault konoha is probably clumsy as hell. haruka genes. didnt get the deadly illness👍👍👍 but falls on his face for no damn reason all the time😔😔😔

AS FOR THEIR RELATIONSHIPS i feel bad abt them choosing a favorite THATS SO SADDD i dont think its about FAVORITES it's more like. u have different relationships with both parents??? like i think ayame goes more to shintaro than ayano exactly because ayano is like Sit down AND LETS HAVE OUR SCHEDULED HEART TO HEART and shintaro's like a million times more chill like i generally think ayame's personality is more like his. i think she's sort of like if shintaro was an extrovert♥️ but also when it comes to hanging out outside and jumping around and chasing each other around which is 1000% ayames kind of playing she goes to ayano. shintaro's sitting down on the couch trying to read and his kid(s) (all the older ones join in too) and wife are jumping around him because the floor is lava 🙏💯🔥 literally ratio + playing + having fun.

like IDK. I FEEL BAD CHOOSING ONE OR ANOTHER TO BE A FAVORITE BOTH ARE GOOD PARENTS THEYRE A HAPPY FAMILY *MY TELEKINESIS THROWS EVERYTHING ACROSS THE ROOM* same for harutaka and konoha but in a more chill way btw i think their households are so different bc konoha is an only child AND super chill and ayame is a nightmare child AND 1 out of 4 kids so harutaka household is like super organized and quiet and shinaya house is utter chaos. konoha and ayame getting overstim/understim when visiting each other LMAOO but theyre still BESTFRIENDS FOREVER!!!!!

idk her last name yet (give me recommendations pls <3) but candy is an entrepreneur by day, and the vigilante elemental master of vitality by night!! she, unlike the ninja, isnt above beating people to a pulp (shes never killed, tho). and she actually kinda cares about keeping her identity a secret afsffafa

during the day, they own a flower shop!!! thats why i drew her w flowers in my first post of her :DD their shop is in a very small part of Ninjago city, a section that isn't TOO industrialized. not exactly in the slums per-se, but very close to them.

as for her element, she got it from her mother!! (who has sadly passed away <3) idk the full lore of where vitality comes from, but its definitely a mutation of energy (tho her and Lloyd are NOT related. not at all :,D). even tho she fights on her own, they'd actually be a really good healer/support member on a team!! her ep's are like, uh... like a booster when used aggressively, and a healing thingy when used passively!! if that makes any sense

and, bc her element is mostly passive, shes a self taught fighter!! theyre AMAZING at hand to hand combat (theyve been boxing since they were legit two). I wouldn't call her a 'ninja' per-se, bc she has no official titles/teachers, she just wears a gi bc hey!!! she has one, and the Public know that the ninja are a symbol of safety!!!! and thats what she wants to be!!!!!

this is already long and i still need to do the fun facts, so just know that I plan to do a ficlet about her meeting Lloyd!! (Sorry I’m advance if I have a lot of questions)I don’t know if you have been asked this before-but what art program do you use? And how to you go about the drawing process and such? And your thoughts when it comes to artstyle? You don’t have to answer all of this but I am always curious about artists I admire. How they do certain things and stuff. ANYWAY have a splendid day!

I use Clip studio paint Ex to draw. It's a bit on the pricey side, but it has served me well. >:D

Honestly my art process changes constantly, but as of right now this is the process i use for digital painting:

Doodling ideas

Sketching out a thumbnail based on one of the doodles (sometimes I just use the original doodle)

Resizing the thumbnail to fit the whole canvas

Cleaning up the thumbnail sketch (sometimes I skip this step depending how clean the thumbnail is)

Rough coloring underneath that sketch layer (all on one layer. This isnt flat coloring. I am placing down values and color variation in this stage as well.)

Separating parts of the rough color layer based on if they overlapping other parts of the drawing. Like a hand being in front of the head. (I separate parts by selecting them and using ctrl+x. This just makes it easier to adjust parts of the drawing if i need to.)

Then I start rendering :]

I'm still working on a solid process for lineart drawings, so I can't really give you anything on that front. :[

When it comes to art style, I think it's nice to have a distinct art style (and I hope to have one someday), but it doesn't really matter. At least not when you are still exploring exactly what you want to do with your art. I'm still trying to figure that out, and I found that trying to stick to one distinct art style just slows me down. (And low-key is a bit stressful)

Hopefully I answered that well enough, and I'm glad I can be an artist you admire! I feel really honored. :D

anyway these are what came from that doodle page mess from a minute ago, goose was the first but i needed an oc who would work to be shipped w snatcher so then i made howl and decided there were 5 of them. they're supposed to be mostly borzoi/italian greyhound mixes? idk. either way they run on ahit rules but i might use em in other places too idk yet. Summary of their characters are below the cut

so they're a litter of 5 and no one is keeping track of whose oldest or youngest or whatever

unusual i know but i also cant figure out where i want them to be anyway so shut ur face

somewhere on her travels goose ran into hk and bow and was worried about these strange children being alone in space so she decided to come with them and like they arent gonna complain about their new dog

shes not the best with other people but she takes good care of them both and keeps them protected and fed and whatnot.

shes the only one who has a collar because shes the only one who has a person out of her siblings

nk n then howl! howls got a lot going on

they got a fairly dinky ship when they left it was sturdy enough but like not Good good yk

and at some point way before hattie and bow and goose end up there, they pass over harbor because theyre tryna figure out if they wanna stop for a supply run or not and the mafia shows up n makes trouble ofc

she gets the mafia to leave her alone but in the process ends up crash landing somewhere near subcon (not sure if its like in the woods or just off the borders but close enough either way)

in the crash tho, a bunch of time pieces shatter n get fucked up and end up scattered across time

she has to go through and try to clean all THAT up because plain n simple those things are hard to get and just leaving a jumbled mess like that it Very Not Safe

in this whole debacle her family dont know whats happened and the ship is kind of undocumented because the crash basically happened forever ago but also it hasnt yet but also it never did?? so like. shes missing for a good decade before shes finally back to her present (by this time hat n bow have come n gone so she missed goose anyway)

while she was going through time collecting time peices, she got in whole heeps of trouble and while its only been 10 years in her present it feels like its been at least 50

shes gotten acused of witchcraft, cursed about 5 times over, there was that one time she was thrown in a dungeon for 7 years for disrespecting a king or something

point is they came back fucked up

they're half undead and their soul is a little bit missing because someone stole it at some point and they only barely got it back a little bit. also cursed to be tied to shadows so being in the sun too long isnt very good for them.

ive also been playing with the idea they were cursed to live either other people's spirits and energies OR their flesh. not sure which yet

i do feel like it'd be nice if they and snatcher could end out with a deal where he eats the souls and she eats the bodies. or something

this whole change of theirs is supposed to be shown by them loosing their white on their face. theyre the one laying down in the last drawings which is supposed to be them while their in college years and shes got her white face. she looses it when she gets all tied up in the darkness thing. she also gets taller than her siblings they were the shortest originally

neway im till daydreaming abt the whole thing so yk

the other siblings are less important but still cute

duke is also an astronaut but his explorations tend to go better apparently. he comes home with a cute alien boyfriend later

paris owns a boutique that brandy helps her out with- they stayed on their home planet together with their parents when the others went to space.

speaking of, brandy is rlly nice

aside from her different markings which always set her apart real nice shes also trans. so grew up a little bit othered but still very very loved and also her and paris are besties obvi

brandy is good i like her a lot. i think shes be like second eldest if not eldest eldest if i had a real order there

her and howl bond over having different markings from the otherwise when howl finally gets home :)

And its hard for me to say exactly? Im still very much into bsd but ive been distant with the fandom for a little while now BUT!! From what i remember what i usually didnt like was when people would make them so..two dimensional kinda?? BSD has pretty morally complicated characters and it was really weird when people would flatten sskk's personalities down to just some ship dynamic bc they are SOOO much more complicated than that. And thats just as INDIVIDUALS!! Even when considering them together theres a lot to think about when it comes down to their functionality, whether or not its viewed as romantic or platonic. And of course youre always gonna have those people who just water down any mlm ship into some weird dynamic that doesn't even fit the character's relationship which is just obviously Not Great.

And then as far as the characters individually i feel like a lot of people baby atsushi its really odd. Like that man has gone through some shit he is GROWNNN. I think its because hes the "softer" one out if the two or whatever. Which yeah he's nicer, its made clear akutagawa isn't a great person but atsushi isnt the exact opposite of akutagawa or the "softer" one. They're narrative foils of eachother, they mirror many of the other's character traits and atsushi has also done some Not Super Stellar shit. Do i think most of it was within reason? A little, considering what hes been through and exactly what he did. I do think he is the better person between the both of them - and i feel like thats also proven - but he is by NO means "innocent" or anything weird like that.

Then for akutagawa its really only that weird sa headcannon that originated from something he said in Beast (i can't remember exactly what, but i remember thinking it was NOT enough to warrant a hc like that. I remember that much). And as someone who's been through that a couple times i think its one thing if its some way to help someone cope or feel more seen (more specifically it isnt my business to cast judgement -unless it hurts them or someone else- and im no therapist), but i have seen people apply the headcannon simply because they say its "implied" or it "makes sense". Which, once again, as someone who's gone through that i think thats just. Weird. I dont like it. I personally try to stay away from any talk about it at all from anyone.

I also don't like when people make it seems like Atsushi has to save Akutagawa or something like hes some knight in shining moral armor. Its much more complicated than that and I could go further into this but it would be a whole rant about their characters and dynamic and itd go on FOREVER. So im just gonna say that akutagawa is also a grown man and knows well enough what hes doing with himself, even if its unhealthy (not that Atsushi is any better but lets be real no one is this show really is) and he wouldn't listen to atsushi if he didnt want to anyway. This part is really just personal opinion though, and i don't cast hard judgement on people who see them that way. Im not the type to care enough.

So yeah i guess it wasn't really hard to say at all LMFAO but otherwise i dont think ive had any other issues abt it?? I dont pay much attention to things i don't like anyway so im not easily bothered lol
