I don’t usually make posts like this, but I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-intellectual junk lately, and I really think we need to put the word “pretentious” up on a shelf until people learn what it actually means.
It doesn’t describe someone who likes artsy-fartsy deep meaning media. People who are pretentious are fake. They’re posers trying to be sophisticated and unique, not like other girls. They pretend to only like stuff they think will make them sound cool when they talk about it. They want to act like they know something you don’t, and they want attention for it.
By definition, if you genuinely enjoy something, you can’t be pretentious. If it resonates with you, and you analyze it, and you don’t care what people think, that’s the polar opposite, actually. If you love obscure experimental prog music, if you watch underground high concept indie films through English teacher eyes, if you spend hours in a modern art museum reading each piece as a vessel for storytelling, if your backpack’s full of poetry books that inspire you, if you play underrated games that were someone’s passion project, if you have an interest in studying the classics or the masters, you are not pretentious.
Of course, some people just don’t like some stuff, and that’s fine, but that’s not what this is about. Don’t let anti-intellectuals shame you for enjoying things just because your interests are inaccessible to them, because they refuse to be brave and put effort into critical thinking. You’re not stuck up for refusing to overlook the craft of artists.
#anti intellectualism#media#movies#books#music#critical thinking#my friend who primarily listens to one very popular band once said that people who listen to obscure music are annoying and pretentious#which rubbed me the wrong way because 1 she knows that I listen to obscure music and 2 it’s such a cowardly consumerist take. anyone can#make music and hey a lot of the people who do make GOOD music. and this goes for all *obscure* media#this post was mostly inspired by people talking about Barbie and those anti pick me girls like the pick nobody girls who insist thinking is#for boys and having fun with an empty brain is for girls. Greta gerwig is an artist. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I know it has a deeper#message than haha cute pink! I’ve seen the summaries about the true meaning. the pinkness and popularity doesn’t negate the narritive.#though in the notes I saw a lot of tumblristas comunistas shitting on the film for being one big ad that people *fell for* which tbh is#tbh almost as anti-intellectual. don’t get me wrong they milked this film to sell hella shit but I don’t believe kids who play with dolls#are the target audience as these people claim. Barbie is a culturally iconic symbol almost archetypical of societal expectations for women#you say barbie people think unblinking perfect plastic pink girly. reminds me of the poem The Last Mojave Indian Barbie. yeah yeah you all#hate brands but this one carries undeniable significance and makes for a powerful literary device. it’s been used many times before#sorry for writing a tag essay about a film I haven’t even seen but I’m tired of internet people focusing so much on proving others wrong#that they end up oversimplifying everything just as much as the other person. god I saw people doing this to Nimona saying transphobes were#looking too deep into her character and they’re reactionary clowns for making that jump. like for once the transphobes are right. she is#trans. it’s a queer story. and irl the first people who notice queerness are the bigots who can tell you’re different. sick owns telling#them the story’s not that deep is harmful and it’s like they’re ignoring the real message on purpose. okay enough rambling hehe! thanks#barbie#nimona

Today I’ve been looking through my old dolls in honour of the Barbie trailer, and I came upon these two that have always been kind of intriguing to me.
They both have Mattel stamps on the back, but something in their faces and clothes have always put them apart from my other, “generic” dolls. I’ve been looking around online and haven’t really found any that look similar. Does anyone know if they’re from a certain line or collection?

does dc have like. any adult butch women? at all? the closest example i can think of is karsta wor-ul but she's not a recurring character and that's like. literally it. surely im forgetting some... onyx maybe counts... but like dc still always draws women so feminine like they Have to have form-fitting clothes and big boobs and full faces of makeup it's hard to actually call any of them butch designs. (not that women with big boobs or form-fitting clothes can't be butch but like in terms of character designs clearly made by straight men you know?)

teary eyed over the idea of ken studying what all of my medication is for. making sure i'm eating and drinking. asking when i've last slept. i don't like being doted on constantly but i really really wouldn't hate it if ken fussed over me bc i know he wouldn't do it to baby me
seeing me laying in bed and asking how long i've been there and i don't answer so he assumes it was a bad day. lays next to me and rubs my back and urges softly "sweet girl, you wanna get up? just for a minute. and if you're still tired you can go back to sleep. but how about just one minute out of bed with me? can i make you some food? did you eat today? no? oh, you couldn't keep it down... i'm so sorry. i'll make you something light, let's try again. can you try again for me? i'll make it really yummy, i promise. you can just have a few bites and i'll eat the rest, don't worry. can you stand? do you want me to Keri you? heheh. c'mere baby, let's go get some food in ya"
he carries me downstairs and sits me on the leather couch. he is frantically making a sandwich. he is going to make this the best sandwich ever. he is going to make this the most nutritious sandwich to ever exist. he's cutting this baby into little triangles. the entire time he is trying to fill the silence, trying to say funny things about leather couches that he learned, like the "hysterical" sounds they make when your thighs get sweaty and stick to the leather. he thinks it's funny. i don't, until he starts laughing at his own story and then i can't help but laugh with him
weepy over the image of him sitting next to me and watching me eat and going through all of my medication and mispronouncing all of them. i can't tell if he's doing it to be funny or if he genuinely doesn't know how to pronounce wellbutrin. "but it's got the word WELL in it, so this will make you feel better, right?" he makes sure he knows which one does what. he knows which one i have to take with food and which one i don't. he knows their side effects. "good morning, sweet girl, i made you breakfast, your pills are by your spoon." "hey sweet girl, let's go to the beach, we can have some ice cream and you can take your vitamins when we get outside." "sweet, divine, beautiful girl, you almost forgot, here's your evening pills. these will make you feel so much better." he always hands them to me with a drink and watches me take them because he knows i'll forget otherwise. he sticks to the routine, always a step behind me with everything i need (because as ryan says: behind every great barbie, there's a ken giving her everything she needs and holding her stuff for her, and he's totally fine with that).
and on days when i'm so out of it, the medication unable to do its job because the world is just too much, or maybe the ptsd is hitting harder than normal and i can't go an hour without getting physically sick, he doesn't urge me to get out of bed right away. he says, hey keri, let me lay next to you - no no don't move, don't move, let me lay next to you sweet girl. let me hold you in my very strong and manly ken arms. you having nightmares again? did you sleep at all today? a little? you'll sleep better tonight, i promise. no, i promise, i'll make sure of it. let's lay here for a couple of minutes, just a couple. and then we'll get up and get some donuts, how does that sound? and while we're at it maybe some more food for dinner, but let's start small with one or two bites of something sweet. you know barbie loves giving you her clothes, she'll be so happy to see you in her sweater, let me help you put it on so you'll be comfy when we go for a little walk to the donut shop. and if you're still depressed by the time we're picking up dinner, we'll come right back and go to sleep, okay? i'll hold your hand the whole time. i've got you. i'm not going anywhere. this isn't gonna be like last year, sweet girl, nobody's here to hurt you anymore, nobody's here to scare you. you're safe with me. and you've got more than a dozen other people who look just like me who want you to be well. we're all rooting for you. if we're feeling better after you eat, we'll go visit six, how does that sound? i bet driver misses you too, let's go see him tomorrow if you're up for it. we want you to be okay.

Appreciation post for 'girly girl' characters and/or shows that celebrate traditionally feminine things that girls and women are shamed for.
Characters on this list that love makeup, fashion, hair, etc. Characters that are still written as strong, intelligent, brave, etc. That told young girls that these interests are valid, they are not lesser interests. Being feminine and liking traditionally feminine things does not make them weak.

#I'm so glad I got to grow up with these girls#I was originally gonna make a post of Barbie Daphne and Stella and be like. They remind me so much of each other#And how much I love characters like them#Because I do#But then I was like fuck it let's just make a post for all the girly girls because they're so good#So here we are. In a world of misogyny. We still have them. And I am so greatful#I'm sad I missed out on celebrating my femininity and stuff like this in my teen years because of just. Stuff I was going through#But I'm glad I'm doing it now. I've been getting into makeup for the past year. Mostly eye it's so fun#The Barbie movie. Dressing up for it. Being proud makeup and skirts and dressing up like I did as a girl. God it was so wonderful#I've not felt this connected to this part of myself in years. It has helped to much#It reminded me of my love for Barbie. The movies. The fairies and mairmaids. The bright colours and fashions#And my love for all of these shows. The outfits and designs I fell in love with. The friendships and sisterhoods in all of them.#Yes it's just Rarity. I know some of the others girls also fit. But some don't as much so I didn't wanna just put a group one#And I know Kim and some others aren't as girly as others. But she's still a good example.#Her and Monique's shopping trip and other stuff is engraved into my mind. I actually think about them a lot I love them#Daphne was also a masisve awakening for me. I had such a crush on her. And the Hex Girls.#If you're wondering why other shows aren't on here. Like Trollz or Powerpuff Girls or something. It's msotly based on what I watched#And I didn't really watch them I'm sorry but feel free to add more.#We're ignoring how I mispelled mermaids. I'm not going back to change that tag.#Anyway I love women basically. We're awesome.#Barbie#Scooby Doo#Bratz#Monster High#Kim Possible#My Little Pony#Winx#Mew Mew Power

Has nobody clocked the ridiculously underrated joke from the Barbie film yet during the “Girlfriend/Boyfriend” thing?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Gifs by @onscreenkisses )
This part!
I may be reading into it but like, there are posts going on about them being Asexual, and while I’m 100% for that if that’s your headcanon, I think it’s because of something else.
Children’s toys don’t have ‘private parts’.
Sure barbie dolls have ‘boobs’ which are just plastic curves let’s not lie but they aren’t detailed! Between their legs is literally just smooth plastic!
And yeah yeah I hear the “But some kids would know what sex is” and I raise you this!
Shut the fuck up. They shouldn’t have to know, nor should they think that’s the only thing gf/bf’s do.
A child wouldn’t know what ‘girlfriend/boyfriend’s do when they stay over at each others houses, but they probably heard that exact phrase at some point, whether it’s from their sibling, a parent, or tv!
So Ken literally just wants to spend time with Barbie.
And I do see that as Asexual in a sense, but I also have a logical part of my brain screaming “MOST BARBIES/CHILDREN DON’T KNOW WHAT SEX IS, SO THATS LITERALLY NOT ON THE TABLE FOR THEM!”
But yeah, thanks for coming to my Barbie/Ken Talk :)

Ur tags about how Miles and Pavitr are the ones who say "I can do both" because it IS quintessential spiderman thinking AND because they're too young to have seen that devastatingly not work yet. BUT the thing is they are RIGHT but only if it's "we"! Spiderman's mythos is inherently a lonely one reinforced by Miles and Gwen's isolation and by every. single. intro. reminding us that every spider person is the "one and only spider person"! And yet!! These films are just about relationships (1/2)
Tumblr media
YES YEAH YOU GET IT !!!! and (quite recently rewatched it and mentioning it here cause i can't believe i forgot to mention it in the post you're talking about) it really gets me that gwen also says 'i was doing both' in regards to protecting miles and protecting the canon event, and i love that the phrase was reflected like that, even tho (at this point of the movie) miles and gwen pretty much oppose each other in views/priority !!
it also absolutely kills me the way that gwen begins (like you say) atsv quitting the band and isolates herself, and then throughout the whole thing she finds something/someone that she wants to take that leap for, all over again :') she (and the entire spider-team!!) is willing to bet everything on miles and is ready to fight for him, and i really just love the idea that miles just is a force that inspires good !!!! IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT LOVE!!!

angry at the oscars barbie nominations but in an annoyinger way (i think nominating ryan reynolds makes sense but the best picture and best supporting actress noms are ridiculous)
#sorry but the more i think about it the more i really dislike the movie#ken was funny! he was silly and campy! i really did not care for the rest of the movie!#i just think the more you examine its take on feminism the more it falls apart!#it's inherently about a product! it's inherently personifying a product and making you feel sympathy for and relate to a product!#they are generating hype and engendering sympathy for something they are trying to sell you!#regurgitating second wave feminism without nuance doesn't make it groundbreaking it makes it like. fine i guess?#verilybitchie has a great video that put a lot of my feelings about it into words#idk it did not resonate with me at all and also made me kind of annoyed with how it contributed to the ongoing trend#of gendering things that aren't gendered and focusing on a segregation of gendered perspectives#tired of i'm just a girl! tired of girl dinner! tired of men are always thinking about the roman empire!#sure there are experiences more common to and relevant to women but i get so uncomfy with those kinds of generalizations#even when they're just jokes because after they get repeated enough they stop sounding like ones#just like. when you try to examine it in terms of any kind of intersectionality it falls apart#and i know it's not that serious but like come on. they literally do not once touch on any kind of intersectionality.#you can't be like 'it's a groundbreaking feminist movie!' because they said 'women struggle with misogyny' in 2023#like i know it's barbie but i don't understand why there's this impulse to say that that's something that's never been said before#just because the president is black doesn't mean you've acknowledged like. racism at all.#just because you have two fat barbies with like four lines doesn't mean you've said anything meaningful about body image#and when you take an openly lesbian actress and give her short hair and make her strange and then have all the other characters#essentially socially exile her and still think she's weird after the resolution!!!#i would say that's like!! implicitly a pretty weird way to write gay people!#i don't want to rain on anyone's parade! it's silly! it's not that serious! i just also think it's not that good!#it's fine! it's fun! but i DO think ken is the best part of the barbie movie and for that i apologize

as everyone is talking about bad media literacy i want to talk about a conversation my sister had with me about barbie. minor spoilers (first ~30 mins) ahead.
now, i still havent seen barbie (i get around to watching things very, very slowly, if at all), but i knew the basic gist almost immediately based on vague internet posts.
my sister is 15 and very into that kind of diet feminism that seems radical when you’re 15 and your worst oppression is your band teacher picking the guy drummer over you (which sucks, btw, esp bc she’s objectively better and more disciplined, but like, you know what i mean). i do my best to nudge her to more critical thinking and such, but i was a 15yo diet feminist once too, i know how it goes.
anyway, with those two bits of knowledge i figured she’d like barbie, get the messaging, all of that.
she texts me that night and says “ummm so i’m watching barbie and they’re hating on cellulite a lot. like it’s one of the major reasons she’s leaving barbieland and they have a banner that says goodbye cellulite at the goodbye party”
and i was like. baffled. bc i was under the impression that she knew how movies worked. i mean, we both poke fun at our OTHER sister who can never pay attention to a movie and always ends up making us pause it to explain plot points she missed, so surely she understands story structure, right? that the protagonist has to learn a lesson? it’s fucking BARBIE. i knew months ago commentary on beauty standards was probably going to play a big role. esp bc it’s greta gerwig but i don’t think my sister knows who she is.
so admittedly i was less nice than i could have been when i was like girl you do understand the movie is about barbie leaving her perfect girl world and having to come to terms with reality, right. and learning she doesn’t have to be perfect. like. i just needed to hear “barbie leaves barbieland and goes to the real world” to put that together.
and like. i haven’t seen the movie but what she described sounds REALLY over the top. a “goodbye cellulite” banner? very unserious. would not ping in my brain as The Message Of The Movie at all.
i am genuinely concerned that my sister was worried the barbie movie (2023) was going to be all about hating cellulite and upholding beauty standards. this kid is smart. she’s 100% open to and aligned with the movie’s messaging. what about when it comes to a piece of media she’s less open to? one that presents a stance she doesn’t agree with and then doesn’t spend the rest of the movie explicitly condemning it?

So mad that Midge is only remembered these days as the "pregnant barbie" when a lot of her other dolls over the years are so pretty and her character on Life in the Dreamhouse is so cute and silly and likeable.

customer and I talked abt the Barbie movie and she said she interpreted that Barbie had thoughts of death “on purpose, because she hated her life and wanted to be with Ken desperately but she was unsatisfied with nobody in BarbieLand having genitals” and “the reason why she didn’t love Ken was because they didn’t have sex everyday”. and THEN she told me the reason why she went to the gynecologist was to “acquire a vagina” and she was so serious. Her rant was like 15 minutes about Barbie becoming a human solely for sex??? Then she asked what I thought of the movie and asked if I agreed with her.
But I had to take a moment to process all of that before gently telling her the exact opposite of everything she said
