i used to do prompt memes all the time when i got back into this fandom in like 2018, but there's something especially fun about a secret santa. but honestly, i enjoy doing kinktobers the most. it stretches my writing ability in a way i can control the intensity of.

i like the Yotsuba arc so much. everyone likes that shit for a reason! its basically an intense murdery beach episode for the DN cast.

You cradle the bottle of engex like it's a lifeline, tightly, with trepidation. You know you're not in danger or anything, but the apartment is very small and every inhabitant has apparently oozed out to get a look at you. They're tense, wary.

"Oh, that's-- let me get a good look at that. Damn, I thought Sawhorse was lyin' 'bout you."

What? You shutter your optics in disbelief and carefully freeze in place as a giant convoy-bot eases forward to grab at your peace offering. He hefts it into the air, letting the overhead lights turn the noxious green brew translucent.

"...Where is Sawhorse, anyway?" You ask tentatively.

The convoy-bot hums, passes the bottle to a yellow hauler. Sawhorse didn't even tell you their names, so you can't begin to guess who's who. Really, all you can think about is how small Sawhorse actually is.

"He's-- Airbag, ain't he--?" The yellow one starts.

A green-red truck-type shakes their head. "Nah. He's up a floor or two, helping Razorback with that bad back of his."

Oh. Maybe an emergency, then? You watch them pass the bottle around. One 'bot eventually slinks off. Is that a tail you see?

"Well, he won't mind if we get started without him... Is this nightmare fuel, racer?" The green-and-red 'bot asks.

You're not sure. "I dunno. Maybe? I just gave-- a buddy a couple gallons of, uh, you know. And they made it."

High-end race energon was already close to engex, after all. Just needed a bit more done to it and apparently that could count as "nightmare fuel." Whatever that is.

Something about what you said makes the group laugh, so you just shrug and smile awkwardly.

idk if this is a hot take, but do you also feel like some newer iterations of Jervis look a little TOO Hatter-ish? I like when he’s given traits that’d make him relate to the character (i.e. BTAS, Arkham)…but some designs are literally direct copies of the book illustrations. it just feels kinda lazy to me, and really negates the whole idea of him actively choosing to become the Mad Hatter.

So, first off sorry if there's like no simple yes or no out of me because like I understand both takes...lemme explain.

On one hand, I totally get where you're coming from, of all the shit most writers put him through to make him edgier or darker (which is totally unnecessary but yknow 🙃) when they don't need too. And for them to just be lazy and copy and paste the Tenniel illustration can be seen as lazy and unimaginative because you can definitely work off from the design and make something unique or fitting to the aesthetic of whatever Gotham/Batman has going on in that iteration...

But for some reason...and this can totally just be that I love Alice in Wonderland in general and therefore I'm biased, but like...it works? Like it's a case of working smarter, not harder?

The reason is, Jervis, in most versions anyway, genuinely believes he already is the Mad Hatter. He's the Mad Hatter of Gotham that he wants to make a Wonderland for himself. So the more he looks to be his fictional counterpart the better it is for him to drive home his delusion?

Not to mention, like Secret Six Jervis, who actively explains part of his design (also a common design of Mad Hatter, a larger head but smaller body) which is a real condition called macrocephaly and how it affected him as a kid can also play a huge reason into why he retreats to Wonderland and sees himself as the Mad Hatter, therefore, he IS the Mad Hatter.

Also again, I just love AiW so like the more he looks like the og Mad Hatter doesn't necessarily bother me?

Also, honestly, I don't notice any recent designs exactly bothering me or rubbing me the wrong way, or being direct copies from the book.

If my man's is short (BTAS is excempted from that but it'll always bother me lmao), has imperfect teeth that are tea stained, wild unkempt hair, and a big nose I'm sold lmao.

What do my other Hatter mutuals think? I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts too!

How do you make gifs? Care to share your process? o3o

oooh yes i can!!! i tried not to get too detailed with it since im interpreting this as just asking for my process rather than an actual tutorial sudhf.

the general tools i use are photoshop (i pay $10 a month T_T), vlc media player, and one of my various video downloading sites. i don't torrent or anything bc that scares me and i dont understand it. plus, since i almost exclusively gif kdramas the video uploads are generally in pretty decent quality and dont get scrubbed from the web the way western shows do.

so once i have the video downloaded i open it with vlc media player. I use a really inefficient method to extract frames but it works well enough that i don't really care to change it. plus i cant really figure out another way? they say that certain video programs can capture frames for you but none of the ones ive tried seem to have that feature. there's also supposedly another method to do it in vlc media player but it's never worked for me. anyway.

so to extract frames in vlc i find the moment i want to capture and then use the "e" hotkey to skip to the next frame and click the little screenshot button to capture it.

i do this over and over at lightning speed until I get all the frames i want. yes this does often lead to accidentally skipping frames (which can make the gif a little choppy) so sometimes i redo it, but sometimes i don't bother.

after i've captured the frames, i copy them from my pictures folder (not entirely sure why they end up there but im not going to mess with the pathway) to a specific folder ive created for that gif or gifset.

then I'll go through and make sure there are no duplicate or missing frames. after that, i edit them down to about 70 frames per gif, then select them all and rename them so that they're in numbered order (photoshop loads them out of order if i don't).

I do 70 frames mostly bc my sharpening action on photoshop doesnt go past 70 frames and i haven't bothered to fix it lol. also it's comfortable length for a gif so there's not much reason to. you can usually get away with about 40-50 frames tho before it feels too short.

ok nowww i open photoshop and things get good.

first thing i do is load the files into a stack.

i have a bunch of settings in place to make life easier so i already have my sharpening action created (which sharpens all the frames for me rather than having to do it manually. gift from God), and my timeline visible. so now i just play my sharpening action

then load the frames into an animation and reverse them so they dont play backwards.

then i set the frame delay to 0.05 seconds. it's interesting bc gifs played at normal speed look kinda weird. so having it slowed down a little is ideal. not too much though or it looks choppy.

now i crop the gif. i dont have to do this here but generally i do. just helps me focus without the distraction of the tv bars on the top and bottom and just. All the other stuff going on in the background.

nowwww i color. usually start with a color adjustment curve layer. when you use the little eyedrop tool this can really deepen the image and bring it to life. you dont realize how dull tv looks until you gif lol.

that gives me the base tones i want and deepens the image.

sometimes i brighten the gif with the curves layer, but in this case adding a separate brightening layer worked better.

then i'll export the gif with tumblr dimensions and upload it into a draft.

if it is still too dark or the colors look off, i'll just mess more with the layers. in this case, i only needed the two, but a lot of gifs will need a few different adjustment layers like vibrance or selective color to look right.

Roberto blinks, green gaze utterly blank, and reaches into his coat pocket for his flask. A significant portion of the contents is summarily dumped into the cup of coffee he'd been holding when he'd heard a voice and looked down.

He takes a drink.

When Eddie is introduced to Jonathan, they both give each other a look that says “if you say anything, you’re dead” and naturally, Nancy clocks it immediately.

“What was that?”

“Nothing,” they said at the same time, only growing the suspicion.

“Seriously? Do you know each other already?”

“No!”

“Yes, but-“

They glare at each other, but Eddie speaks up again.

“He bought from me a couple times. No big deal.”

Nancy looks between them, shakes her head. “There’s something else going on. But we’ve got bigger problems.”

And they did.

For months, their problems seemed to get worse by the day. It was a great distraction.

But honestly, anytime Eddie spent more time with Jonathan, it got harder not to say how they actually knew each other: a make out session in a bathroom at a party when Jonathan was yearning for Nancy.

He told Steve eventually, had to with the way he kept finding ways to avoid being around Jonathan and Steve got suspicious.

“If he said something to you about us, I’ll take care of it. He doesn’t get to say shit about what makes us happy.”

And Eddie couldn’t have Steve lose another fight, so he told him.

“So wait. You and Jonathan…”

“Made out. Yes.”

“Like…with tongue?”

Eddie rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I remember tongue being involved.”

“And hands?”

“They were there too.”

Steve puts his hands on his hips, lifts one to wipe over his face, then settles it back on his hip. “And you liked it?”

“Considering at the time my options were Jonathan or the girl in Hellfire who insisted I wasn’t gay because I looked at her during campaigns, yeah. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve been through.”

Steve huffed. “Yeah, but like. Compared to me-“

“Oh my god.”

“What?!”

“I cannot believe you’re jealous of Jonathan Byers. Again.”

“I’m not! I’ve never-“

Eddie raised his brows. “Never? Not once?”

“That was different!”

“That was worse.”

“I dunno, finding out your boyfriend has made out with the only other guy in Hawkins who’d be up for it is arguably worse.”

Steve pouted for hours. Eddie let him.

It was cute, alright?

And when he got over it, they made out for hours in his bed.

Steve, of course, was the one who told Nancy.

In his defense, he was very high, and Nancy had been pushing him all night, from the moment she caught wind that he might know how they knew each other.

Eddie went inside to grab them all water, and she pounced.

By the time Eddie got back, Steve was half asleep and Nancy was smirking at Eddie.

“You could’ve just said.”

“He’s never getting high for free again.”

“He’s your boyfriend.”

“He’s back to being a paying customer, too.”

Nancy laughed, startling Steve into opening his eyes. He smiled up at Eddie, no clue he’d just given up one of their secrets.

“Hi, baby. You know Nancy didn’t know about you and Jonathan?”

Eddie glanced over to see Nancy rolling on her side, laughing hysterically.

“Yeah. I’m sure that was on purpose. How about we get you to bed, superstar?”

He managed to get Steve onto the couch, where he immediately passed out.

Nancy hugged him, kissed his cheek, like she always did before leaving.

“It’s not a big deal, you know. He’s mentioned that he isn’t only into women. We’ve talked a lot about the Argyle situation.” She walked towards the door. “Steve will get over the jealousy eventually. It’s not like Jonathan wouldn’t have made out with him if he could have.”

She left before Eddie could respond.

Eddie suddenly understood exactly what Steve was feeling.

“Not gonna happen,” he mumbled to himself before joining Steve on the couch and pulling him close.
