"Will you marry me?"

Ranpo giggles. He didn't need any more proof that Dazai is really drunk, but that confirmed it.

"Do you want me to marry you?" he asks, playing with Dazai's hair. He's practically lying on top of Ranpo, head on his chest and arms around his waist, and that's just another proof of his drunkenness.

(Maybe it also proves other things, but he's a little drunk too and doesn't want to think about it now.)

"Mhm," Dazai nods. "A small wedding. You and me."

"I guess that kind of defeats the point of this, doesn't it?" mutters Ranpo.

They've started the game a while ago, but Ranpo really doesn't want to think about how they don't show themselves publicly like that anymore and instead have moved everything to their private lives. He doesn't think Dazai takes it seriously because Dazai doesn't take anything seriously when it comes to relationships, and Ranpo won't be the one to make the mistake of falling where it's not convenient. He is not that kind of person.

(His hand is still in Dazai's hair, and Dazai settles his head like he wants to hear his heartbeat, but Ranpo will deal with this when he's sober.)

"I'll buy you a nice ring," Dazai says, ignoring Ranpo's words. "And I won't steal from Kunikida to do it."

Ranpo hums. "Oh, you're serious," he jokes.

"Yep~." Dazai pulls away from him a little, just enough to be able to give him a kiss on the chin. "Will you?"

Ranpo thinks about it for a second. "If you ask me again when you don't smell so much like sake, maybe I'll think about it."

That seems to placate Dazai, because he nods and settles back on his chest. He falls sound asleep a few minutes later, and Ranpo has to maneuver to escape from his in his arms. Leaving Dazai's apartment feels a little like running away.

Listen guys I know we all like to think of our favorite queer pairings as married, but in Japan gay marriage is unfortunately illegal, now this isn’t some that has to effect your fanfics, but I would actually like if we as a community acknowledged it more. I just think it’s more impactful if the characters had to struggle with the biases of some of the people around them. It would make the characters situation more relatable, and it would also make for interesting plot for the fic, even if it is just a side thing. For some of the ships it might even make for interesting cultural shock, like with Ranpoe, since America does allow gay marriage in most states, while Japan doesn’t it would probably make for a funny interaction. My point is while homophobia and discrimination is unfortunate, it doesn’t mean we have to ignore it in stories, and pretend that it doesn’t exist at all. Idk man I just want some of my fics to be more interesting and this is one way to do it.

Edit: this is not for those who write stories mainly as escapism. If what you want in the story is to play around without the shit called homophobia, then you do you.

Dazai and Ranpo: The Two Geniuses of the ADA

The thought about making a post about Dazai and Ranpo's teamwork has been plaguing my mind for a while now, and so I finally found some time and decided to go through with it.

So let's talk about one of my favourite underrated duos for a moment. The two geniuses of the ADA- Dazai and Ranpo. Two people who make a wonderful team and are actually, in my opinion, the backbone of the agency.

What I find interesting is that (though I believe that Dazai respects and admires all members of the ADA) Dazai openly admires Ranpo A LOT. He's always quick to praise Ranpo (basically fanboying over him and it's quite adorable to see Dazai gush over someone like that other than Oda) and in 'Dazai's Entrance Exam' we see him being surprised over the fact that Ranpo's ability is not actually an ability and we see him further praise Ranpo's intellect after finding that out.

Despite the fact that Dazai is a huge mystery, even to the people around him, Ranpo figured out that there was something up with Dazai in just a single glance (in 'Dazai's entrance exam'). And despite knowing that Dazai was probably hiding a sinister past, he didn't press him any further for details (probably in order to respect his privacy or his wish to not disclose his past OR maybe due to the the fact that knowing Dazai, he most likely wouldn't answer truthfully even if questioned about it)

What I also love is that even though both of them are extremely intelligent, their intellect differs in such a way that Ranpo is a master of deduction and Dazai is a master of manipulation (as stated by Kunikida in 'The Daily Routine of the Detective Agency'). However, one thing both of them share in common is that they both felt isolated due to their nature.

They may have limited interactions but their interactions are always my favourite, for instance-

1. Dazai's entrance exam - Dazai's admiration and respect towards Ranpo

2. Season 1 - Murder on D-Street - Dazai showing a good understanding of Ranpo's deduction process and acknowledging that Ranpo caught onto more details than him

3. Season 2 - "Mountains or sea?" " Sea. "

Showing their unspoken communication. They can read each other's minds at this point lol.

4. Season 3 - Ranpo basically acknowledging that Dazai would be a tough opponent to go up against by comparing Fyodor to him (sort of praising his intellect in a way)

5. Season 5 - The Strongest Man in the Agency- Ranpo

Dazai keeping an eye on Fyodor while leaving the rest to Ranpo

Dazai relying on his allies- trusting Ranpo to negotiate with Bram in order to undo the vampire curse.

6. Dead Apple - Ranpo seeing through Dazai's plan beforehand.

7. 55 minutes - Seeing through upcoming events beforehand, one thing Dazai made sure was to inform Ranpo about the whole fiasco on Standard Island in order to save the Agency in the end.

Also, sidenote: I found out that the Dazai and Ranpo duo is named Souheki, which translates to double jade. Now, I'm not sure if this information is fanon or canon (feels more like fanon tbh but I really like it because it's a pretty name)

Anyway, one thing we can say for sure is that as long as the two geniuses of the Agency- Souheki work together, the ADA will most likely remain undefeated cause no one really does it like them

Lastly, just some food for thought. I've always wondered how Dazai would react if he found out that Ranpo met Oda TWICE and the second time he met him was right before Oda went on to his certain death.

Honestly, I would LOVE to see more fleshed out and direct interactions between these two.

can't stop thinking about ranpo being the one person dazai is close to who he can touch without worrying about nlh., with everyone else, every touch is paired with the sensation of his ability cancelling out theirs but with ranpo it's just. normal touch. and it's so strange and almost eerie at first because casual touch is always so much. dazai's touch is meant to be used as a weapon, and he's forcibly reminded of that every time he pats atsushi's head or pokes kunikida's cheek or brushes up against kenji. gentle, casual, touch is not what dazai is meant for.

but then he touches ranpo and there's nothing. there's just the surface-level feeling of his hair pinched between dazai's fingers. he touches ranpo, and it's only skin-deep. ranpo touches him, and never once flinches at the sensation of no longer human. and dazai starts to think maybe his touch doesn't have to be a weapon all the time, maybe just this once, it can be skin-deep and gentle. maybe with ranpo, he can learn how touch is supposed to feel.
