Serenity Vidot is a sophomore audiology and speech-language pathology major from Harrisburg and of Puerto Rican descent. In addition to being active with the Student Organization of Latinos, the Honors student is also involved in the Spanish Club, Emerging Scholars, as well as intramural sports.

“Hispanic Heritage Month to me means raising awareness to different Hispanic cultures, sharing the true history behind our ancestors, and celebrating the food, language, customs, and beautiful geography,” Vidot says. “Yo soy Boricua, pa'que tu lo sepas! Puerto Ricans love to say this as a chant.”

A tradition Vidot enjoys each summer with her mother and brother is attending the big Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. There, she says they enjoy seven hours of singing, cheering, dancing, and seeing guest celebrities in the June parade.

Another popular tradition, according to Vidot, is a Parranda.

“A Parranda is the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling,” Vidot says. “We surprise a family member or friend by popping up to their home with instruments and singing. A Parranda can go on for hours!”

Of course, you can’t have cultural traditions of festive parades, music and signing without a great culinary reputation.

“Our most known dish is arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas),” Vidot says. “We also love pernil (entire roasted pork). We eat pernil for almost every major holiday like Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. I also love mofongo, which is another Puerto Rican dish.”

Vidot says she chose BU, because it was the perfect distance away from home, had a great program for her intended major, and gave her a feeling of diversity when she first visited.

“I haven't met many Puerto Ricans on campus, but I found plenty of other Latinos to connect with,” Vidot says. “Meeting other Latinos and joining the organization SOL has helped me learn more about Latino culture as a whole. I realized my heritage has so much in common with other Hispanic cultures.”

Vidot says she’s been more vocal about her Latina background since coming to Bloomsburg last fall, while she’s also increasingly become more active.

“I’ve taken part in more cultural traditions, picked up Spanish as a minor to better understand my language, and gained friendships with other Latinos striving to make a difference,” Vidot says. “I plan to utilize my Latina background during my studies here as an audiology and speech-language pathology major. I’m hoping to do academic research on issues of cultural awareness in my field. I also hope to change the low percentage of minorities in college, more specifically in my future career as a speech therapist. The biggest mark I can make is graduating top of my class while being an Afro-Latina, and I promise that’s what I will do.”
