Capabilities: Starting out life as the prototype of the HGN-732Ib, the "Old Bird's Nest" would soon see an almost continuous amount of tinkering and changing by technicians from both the ilClan and the reborn SLDF. Eventually, when Star Captain Hazen was frocked to the rank of SLDF Colonel to (eventually) lead the reborn Royal Black Watch, the 'Mech received a massive overhaul to become perhaps the most well-equipped Command Mech in the Inner Sphere. The upgrades started with a massively expanded and improved communications and sensor array with satellite uplink capacity. To this, the first unit of the experimental Neutron Star CEWS (based on Nova CEWS designs smuggled from the Clan Homeworlds) was linked, along with the DeadEye Superlock 18K Clan-spec Targeting Computer from the exact Hunchback IIC that Hazen used in her Trial of Position in the 3020s - this computer was not upgraded to modern specs by order of Hazen herself, save to add the advanced Variable Range Targeting program in trials for the HGN-732Ib. The weapons loadout is largely a replication of the old HGN-732b Highlander, though upgraded with modern technology. Mounting a Light Gauss Rifle in place of the standard Gauss of the HGN-732 was a decision by Hazen to gain more range at the expense of sheer damage output. The LRM-20 and SRM-6 remain, though upgraded with Artemis-V FCS. In a curious move that shows Hazen's admitted loveof the past, only one of the ER Large Lasers is a modern-manufactured Clan design - the others being one of the ER Large Lasers mounted on General Aleksandr Kerensky's Atlas II, and another the sole remaining weapon recovered from the irradiated wreck of Colonel Hanni Schmidt's Black Watch Highlander. A highly experimental RISC Advanced Point Defense System provides protection for the 'Mech and its starmates. The use of a Combat Computer helps the 'Mech's 20 Clan double heat sinks keep cool. Using a prototype Clan-spec Endo-Steel chassis, the "Old Bird's Nest" is covered in 17.5 tons of Valiant Lamellor standard armor, incorporating panels taken from the wreck of General Kerensky's personal Orion. A trio of Clan-spec Pratt & Whitney Jump Jets enable the 'Mech to execute Hazen's trademark extremely accurate "Highlander Burial", and prototype RISC Super Cooled Myomer technology helps the 'Mech keep cool even during movement, while Clantech CASE II protects the Mech from ammunition detonations.

Deployment: As the personal 'Mech of Star Captain Hazen, and soon to be the Command 'Mech for the Royal Black Watch, the "Old Bird's Nest" resides solely at the rebuilt Fort Cameron, just outside Unity City, Washington, Cascadian Administrative District, American Administrative Zone.

Notable MechWarriors: Melissa "Mysty"/"The Old Bird" Hazen: One of the oldest and oddest MechWarriors in human history, Melissa Hazen was decanted, along with her 15 sibmates in 2990. As a Trueborn product of the Clan Coyote/Genecaste "Totem Warrior" program, she was part of an effort to create human-animal hybrid warriors - both to improve upon Clan phenotypes, and to embody the spirits of the totem animals of their respective Clans. After a successful career in an enormously popular holodrama, and after attaining three kills in her highly belated Trial of Position, Hazen, along with the others in the "Totem Sixteen" were sent on a scouting mission to the Inner Sphere. Joining up with the now-famous mercenary outfit, Fursona's Fusiliers, Hazen served with the unit for decades from the year 3025 onwards. Briefly taking extended leave to assist her Clan during Operation REVIVAL, Hazen returned to the Fusiliers to fight against the Word of Blake Jihad, and then as a mercenary for the Republic of the Sphere. During and after the ilClan Trial, Hazen and the others of the Sixteen fought on the side of Republic, but were spared by order of the new ilKhan. Biologically only in her late twenties thanks to the efforts of Project Totem Warrior, as well as later medical aid by the Terran Belters (on whose work the original project was based), Hazen has over over one hundred and fifty years of combat experience against virtually every foe in the Inner Sphere and Clan Homeworlds. This experience will soon be brought to the core of the revived Star League Defense Force, under which Hazen is slated to run the new incarnation of the Gunslinger program, as well as command the resurrected Royal Black Watch Regiment.

“Out of curiosity, I looked to see where my counterpart was in this universe,” she said as he finished breakfast. It was oatmeal and fruit. Not being the fondest of oatmeal, he suffered a few mouthfuls, but ate the fruit with gusto. He could try a hunger strike, but what good would that do? No one would even know where he was. Instead, he decided he’d at least enjoy the food, even if the company was repugnant.

“And?” he asked with a mouth full of watermelon.

“At first I couldn’t find her, which is odd for me since I would know her history and all of her aliases. I hacked into UC Security, SysDef, FC Rangers, Neon Security. Even tried the Ryujin personnel database. Nothing. Zero. Nada,” she said.

“Wow, did you do all of that this morning?” he asked, amazed. “Never meet my Cora. It’s hard enough to keep her from trying to hack into her online school, much less UC Security.”

“I remember,” she said fondly, nodding. “But, yes. It’s easy when you have multiple systems running concurrently. Plus, the hardware is all to my own spec. Anyway, I don’t think I have a counterpart in this universe. From what circumstantial evidence I could find, it seems she died as a teenager about twelve years ago. I believe a shootout at the Syndicate warehouse. One of the victims was a fifteen year old girl. She’s only listed as a Jane Doe, but her description and age fits. And, the fact that there were no other records for her, which tracks.”

“What does that mean?” he asked.

“I don’t know. It’s the first universe I’ve been in where my counterpart was dead.”

That piqued his curiosity. “Have you run into her before?” he asked.

“Yes, but I’ve been able to avoid her every time, just like I had been able to avoid you,” she answered. “In some universes, she got out and made a good life. In some universes, she rose to the top of Seokguh Syndicate and was ruthless, expanding it to the UC, and even into Crimson Fleet space. In some universes, she met Sam,” she ended softly.

“And what happened in those?” he asked despite himself.

“Much the same that happened to me. Sometimes her Sam died, sometimes he survived. But, where she did meet her Sam, they fell in love, and were happy, at least for a while. I never hung around in those universes long enough to know how, or if, it ended.”

Sam’s head started churning thinking of all of the possibilities; he thought that all of the universes were the same. “Have there been any universes where I’ve been dead? Or haven’t been born?” he asked.

“Yes, I came across several where you were already dead. In one, you had died as a child. In another, you had joined the Crimson Fleet, and died within the first week. In another, there was no Lillian to save you, and you had died smuggling those goods.”

“Oh god,” he whispered, his brain whirring with all the possibilities where he could have died. “So, there are universes where my gun actually jammed? Or, where I missed? There was that time I was out with my buddies rock climbing, and a piton almost slipped out…” He felt that if he wasn’t already sitting, he’d need to sit down.

i wanted to seek your help with finding some fcs for a canon character if that's okay. sorry for the lengthy ask, i am providing context to be on the safe side.

so, this character is amara aquilla aka magma of marvel. to nobody's shock, marvel hasn't defined her ethnicity or heritage clearly, but from my understanding (please take this with a grain of salt, i don't mean to misstate facts and i acknowledge i can be fallible), she's brazilian with italian descent (in terms of nationality rather than ethnicity) in the comics — where she is depicted as white. in the animated show x-men evo, however, she's stated to be african-brazilian.

as someone who's passionate about writing underutilised canon characters and giving them the justice marvel doesn't give usually, i am going to be liberal with my comics portrayal of amara and write her as a woman of colour.

with this being said, do you have some suggestions for her fcs? i'm seeking a fem representing person who's brazilian with african (and maybe italian if possible) descent, has a reasonable amount of content, older than 18, and with blonde hair if possible? i know this is a huge ask, so if you answer this ask or could recommend me some other rph blogs that could help, i would really appreciate that!

New computer + FFXIV = totally different game

So I started ffxiv a little over a year ago, and it was a *steep* learning curve. I felt like I could barely keep up, when everyone else kept saying “it’s easy, it’s easy” and I felt awful. Joined a fc of lovely lovely people, but still just felt like a drag on everything I went on with them. I couldn’t understand how they were so quick to respond to mechs when my response time just didn’t add up. I also don’t feel comfortable in roulettes anymore because the targeted malding got so bad. On top of that I’m photosensitive, so I sometimes get physically stunned by the strobing in ffxiv, even though I wear adaptive specs.  WELLP. I finally found a good sale and bought a new computer and solved the mystery. I’d been running ffxiv off an external drive on my old laptop, a six year old touchscreen Pavilion with all effects off etc. I now have an Omen. The game is *completely different* with an adequate processor. Turns out playing ffxiv on an older computer is like trying to do a mud run drunk peering through a paper towel tube. Here’s some ways that played out for me: 

LAG. So it turns out I had an inconsistent lag time of anywhere between 2 and 5 seconds, and it was worse and less predictable the more people were loaded into an instance. This meant that mechs would go off while it was showing me that I still had time to respond. Now that I have a better computer, I have found I don’t know what to do with myself because I have 2-3x as much time to do mechs. So older computer = nightmare mode mechs. I used sprint and corps-a-corps (rdm main) regularly for movement just to do the basics, and have been rescued from short mechs by very patient healers (thank you!!!) more times than I could count because they *never showed up for me* or would blink after the mech went off in realtime.  

Lag also affected my rotations. Every sixth or eighth (inconsistent) button I pushed would skip-- just not respond at all. So I had to direct extra attention to watching whether each spell had taken before hitting the next one. Sooo many times my dualcast would get off kilter, or I’d try to use my auxiliary hotbars and couldn’t get to them for a few seconds. I was slow. Real slow. But I was clicking faster than anyone else. One of the adjustments I’ve had to make with new puter is to relearn not to triple-click every button, because this one responds!

Second: cropping. When you play on a smaller screen or at a lower resolution, the game doesn’t scale, it crops. So while the rest of my party could see mechs on the edge of the arena, I literally had to choose between watching bosses, watching for adds, and watching for side mechs. I’d flip back and forth but it’s easy to miss, especially in raids when things happen in quick succession. My screen was also super crowded with my necessary HUD stuff because it was so small. I shrank HUD elements but there’s only so much you can shrink with lower res and still be able to see. 

Fourth: resolution. When you have to go windowed/low res (I was working on about an 8x8″ screen) some mech markers aren’t legible. Simplest example is Darkened Fire in P3: it looks like white and purple blobs and it’s extremely difficult to tell which order you’re in. It super helps if you have a friend with you who can see what it is and tell you what’s sitting on you. 

Ideas.  If you are new and playing on an older machine and practicing and practicing but feeling like you aren’t keeping up, it is likely *not you but the computer.* Processing speed and graphics card don’t just make a difference in how the game looks, but a drastic difference in how it runs and how you sync with your party. It’s especially okay to pick an easy job like smn, rdm, or dnc, because the rest of your game is in already in super hard mode and it’ll help compensate.

The simplest solution to all of these issues requires a lovely and generous friend or fc member who’s willing to get on voice chat and call when you need to move and where so you aren’t dependent on your own screen. It makes all the difference and can be tons of fun! :3 The next simplest is finding a better computer, if that’s within range of where you are in your life. 

If you are on a good computer, please be aware that especially if you’re in low-end content like roulettes, people may be on slower computers than you, and may not be able to afford something better. Their machine can significantly affect their gameplay, so they may not be ignoring you or playing wrong: they may be responding appropriately to a different situation shown on their own screen. Clues that this might be the issue are: they do something wrong very consistently, are having trouble seeing a marker, or are consistently slow. What you see may be very different from what they see. And I can say as someone who’s been there, when a more successful player recognizes what’s going on and is willing to give me a hand, it makes all the difference in the world <3

I went to my first drift event last night. I was just spectating as my MR2 isnt very conducive to drifting (and its to nice and im too scare to hurt it). I loved that turbo FC seen in the first pic, it didnt compete but it was mint and perfect spec. Ill upload some action shots next, but it was fun and makes me think about getting a third car, maybe something rougher that I wouldn't be scared of hitting a wall with
