welcome to an au i like to call oops all avatars, where all the s1 archives staff all come from branching timelines back in time to try fixing the mistakes, but each timeline is a little different in a few ways. details under the cut

jon (eye): follows canon mainly up to the eyepocalypse, whereupon he's sent back in time to s1

martin (lonely): is largely the same up until the lonely aside from tim getting got by the not!them and sasha dying in the unknowing, and jon himself not being too far along in avatarhood where it's easily missed by martin, where jon getting lost in the lonely is the catalyst to martin becoming and in his rage he exits the lonely to murder elias and plukas in a blind rage, ending his timeline w the dead man's switch taking martin down in the process

tim (spiral): in this timeline, it's martin gotten by the not!them. sasha gets killed by jane prentiss during an investigation after being the one trapped in her flat, leading to both jon and tim spiralling and seeking revenge. tim takes to the corridors to find answers, and his door is what saves him at the end of the unknowing where jon dies. tim becomes as a spiral avatar and takes to tormenting the archive replacement staff and elias until he and helen end up warring and leading to the collapse of both avatars and ending the timeline

sasha (web): biggest divergence. jon is claimed bt the not!them in this timeline, leading to sasha investigating the house on hilltop road. martin was kidnapped by the not!jon, and tim was killed in the prentiss attack, leaving sasha all by herself to try fixing things. sasha meets annabelle cane and was learning to be a web avatar, where elias basically serves sasha on a silver platter to the circus because hes sick of spiders in his archives, ending the timeline w her death in the unknowing, where she falls through the crack in hilltop road and sends out panicked web strands and inadvertently brings all the othere back

it doesn't take long for the three archival assistants to realize they all know more than they should and that they're all from different timelines, but all three assume jon knows nothing because he died in all three of the timelines, and that he's just an ordinary human. thry do not know that he knows the actual most of all of them

TMAGP: Hopes for a Tim reappearance.

So, in TMAGP we've had Gerry, Gertrude, and maybe Georgie appear. Obviously, all the TMA fans want more TMA characters to show up living their best lives.

...What if it's not their best life? (in the fans' minds at least)

What if they come back as avatars?

I've seen several Desolation Tim theories, and a few Beholding or Spiral Sashas.

What if that's how they come back?

It's still the same characters, just... wrong.

Imagine, a case of someone named Tim and how his life was destroyed. First by the death of his brother Danny in a freak circus accident, then a coworker stalking him, then an explosion which he knows he shouldn't have escaped from. Why does he now enjoy destroying others' lives the same way his was destroyed?

Imagine, a girl, Sasha, with too much curiosity for her own good. One day she opened a door and lost herself. But she's still there, isn't she? She has to be. She knows it. Or is it Knows? Her burning curiosity to understand what happened to her leading her to trapping people in her halls to question them and not realizing when they get lost too. Not as lost as her, of course. The few answers she that receives only making her more and more confused. Why is she so confused now? Was she always like this? No, she couldn't have been. Could she?

Feel free to add your own ideas!

I was thinking about adding Web!Martin, but there's still too much hope that he's Norris. Maybe Daisy or Basira could be avatars in TMAGP too? Or at least cops. Leitner too maybe? Not a cop I mean, an avatar of some sort. So many ideas! We don't even know for sure that Melanie came with Georgie (or even if it's actually Georgie), maybe because of her gouging her eyes out she's a Dark avatar in this universe?

so... who was going to tell me that my estimates of the tma characters' ages was WAYYY off??

and i know jonny probably meant it to be that way so that there'd be leeway for creative interpretation of the characters and all, but my brain wants them pinned down. so. here's a mini-list/research rant of my favs. presently the list consists of:

Three disclaimers – (i) The TMA timeline is a trainwreck. Many assumptions have been made. At least half of them are probably wrong (especially where University is used as an age marker) and also my maths ability sucks because I haven’t done maths in two years, so where there are glaring issues, so feel free to correct me and I will edit accordingly :’) (ii) This is by no means definite. See above. Honestly, attempting to decipher them feels like trying to understand the Spiral. But I’m doing it anyway, because as both a fanfic writer and an academic, I want to at least try. (iii) SPOILER WARNING!! SO MANY SPOILERS! I think the only seaosn that isn't spoiled is maybeeee S5 ???

With that, let's go! [Ages are approximate & as-of 2016 / S1]

Jonathan Sims Age: 28 Birth year: 1987-1988 There seems to be a general consensus on this one. MAG81 appears to be one of the key clues here – ‘Jon says that he was about 8 during the events of the statement and that it happened a year or two after Leitner's library ended, which was in 1994. So he's born around 1987-88.’ [source: reddit]Of note is the fact that he lied about his age and pretended to be older, which is hilarious, and leads me to believe that he’s the youngest of the Archives crew – or at least, near there.

Martin Blackwood Age: 28-ish Birth year: 1988 Has worked for the Institute since at least 2009. He’s lied about having a Master’s in parapsychology, so is likely old enough to feasibly be able to have one. As all institute staff have to at least have a Master’s in something archive-related (iirc), all of them must hence be at least 22/23, assuming the Master’s courses are 1 year long. Jonny has, however, stated that Martin is either a bit older or a bit younger than Jon, and I’m tempted to believe it’s the former (see above).

Sasha James Age: 28-34, 30-ish? Birth year: 1981-1987 There’s like, nothing on Sasha. I’m assuming she’s at least older than Jon, because that might be why he began faking his age. The only possible marker would be that Sasha’s worked in Artefact Storage (for 3 months), Research (for longer, I assume) and long enough in Archives to be considered as Gertrude’s likely successor. So, definitely more qualified, and also older than Jon.

Timothy Stoker Age: 30-ish Birth year: 1986? Tim has a degree in Anthropology from Trinity College (I assume this to be Oxbridge, rather than Ireland or something, since he resides in London), and spent 5 years working at a publishing firm. This puts him at 26 (18+3+5) in 2013 when Danny was taken. As he says he began working for the Institute shortly after, I would assume that this is when he stopped working for the firm. I’ve added a bit of buffer because nobody’s birthdays are given, ever, and also there might have been a bit of time between leaving university and joining the firm and/or leaving the firm and finding the Institute. So – 30.

Okay that’s the core staff, onto my other favs.

Michael 'Mike' Crew Age: 37-ish Birth year: ~1979 My #1 avatar! I did a double-take after I worked out his entire timeline, but here’s the highlights: He was a uni student during late 1997-early 1998 when he went looking for Ex Altiora in Lion Books. I’m assuming he was a first year, because generally uni students stay in the sameish area for the whole course and I don’t see him missing out on an opportunity to Leitner-hunt just because the store was in a slightly out-of-the-way part of town. So! This puts his birthdate at around 1979-1980.

Oliver Banks Age: 28-ish Birth year: ~1987 Oliver Banks’ timeline during & post-Uni makes NO SENSE. Fortunately, we do know that he moved to London around 2005 to do his undergraduate degree at the London School of Economics. Which puts him at around 18 in 2005, and his birth year can be worked out from there. Quick rant about Oliver’s timeline: Oliver is working at Barclays by 2007, and he was recruited after graduating. Which means he both began and subsequently completed his undergraduate degree between 2005 and 2007. That’s literally impossible for a standard 3 year course. Plus, by around 2007, he’s been working for nearly a year at Barclays, so he started in 2006… so apparently he began his degree and completed it in under a year, since the academic year starts in September??

Michael Shelley / Michael the Distortion Age: 31 / 49 / early 50s (but canonically 92 at all points in the timeline) Birth year: ??? I didn’t do the research on this one, so here’s my source because I don’t think there’s any more I can add.This mess is truly Spiral-worthy, which could have been intended, but also may just be the TMA timeline wonkiness at work. There’s also been some speculation that he was hired at even younger than 18, but equally it’s possible that he was hired older, which puts his age squarely into the [I don’t have a fucking clue] range.

Gerard Keay Age: technically 32 Birth year: ~1984 Gerry was born in the 80s, and given that the above source states he was in his ‘late teens’ in 2002, this tracks. Making the assumption that he’s 18 in 2002, I’m going to place his birth year at around 1984. However, he died in 2014 (I’m assuming late-2014, given that he had time to encounter Leitner in London & travel a bit with Gertrude before his death) in the USA, putting him at around 30 at the age of his death. Since he’s dead, he doesn’t really age, but he is ‘aware’ enough to be in existential pain so I’m going to go with Descartes on this one and say he’s ‘alive’ enough to continue counting his years of existence. Poor guy. Doesn’t even get to actually die til August 2017 either.

Ok so after MAG 80 and general spoilers from tumblr, here's a few of my thoughts on some of the fears:

The Corruption

ew ew ew ew

I hate it. I watched that one insect scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and I'm forever horrified by masses upon masses of any insect or worm. It just makes my skin crawl.

(sorry Ms Prentiss, I have immense fear and respect for you)

The Lonely

Mmm delicious

Seems peaceful tbh

What do you mean you're worried about me? I'm not self isolating and depressed, I'm just becoming an avatar of the Lonely!

The Eye

Hmm

I never really understood the paranoia and the fear of constantly being watched but I guess if I was then I would.

I do understand the thirst for knowledge though

If I were to become a ghost, I'd spend my days listening to people's private conversations and finding out about their personal lives and drama

The Flesh

Oooh I kinda like this one

It does give me a visceral reaction though I hate the idea of raw meat so fucking much oh my god.

But the idea of us humans just being piles of meat? Oh yes. I've had many intrusive thoughts about that

I like it in a poetry kinda way cause I am actually so squeamish in real life it's what I told my dad when I told him I didn't want to be a doctor lol

The Slaughter

The Hunt

Bro I have no stamina and also no motivation

I do have spite so maybe I would be a good avatar? Hmm

The Dark

Yeah I'm fucking terrified of this one.

Listen I have no motor skills, I can barely walk when it gets dark i am not equipped for this

I like the idea that burning everything down

I also intimately adore and understand Tim Stoker and his Rage

Yeah ok I'm kinda a fan of this one

I like the idea of ending things for other people

And things coming to an end for me

I think it would be cathartic

The Web

I'd be mad if I found out I was being manipulated by another person but if I found out a hot crazy lady was manipulating me? I'd be fine with that.

Not a fan of a huge number of spiders though (see the corruption one)

The Stranger

I didn't think it was that terrifying until like MAG 79 when the not Sasha was like I'm gonna wear your skin and it's gonna hurt

God damn I was traumatised.

I'd also absolutely despise being the one person who can tell someone is different I'd actually burn everything down and then myself

The Spiral

Michaels is just a harmless little guy

This is just what being genderqueer is like (I say as a genderqueer person)

Yeah I know madness.

That one statement about insomnia really stuck with me

I could be a great avatar of the spiral, my friend said that conversations with me are like trying to find your way out of a maze

What have I missed

I think it would be peaceful

I like to imagine sometimes that the world is just a 15km radius surrounded by an expanse of fog or trees

It's nice knowing I'm insignificant I guess. It means I only need to worry about myself.

SUMMARY:

The notion that this had been Gertrude’s game all along is equally unspeakable. But though Sasha is hard-pressed to posit a different reason for Gertrude bringing the skin book on her and Keay’s travels, the fact that the book had been left behind complicated matters. Maybe she hadn’t succeeded in binding Keay as she’d hoped. Maybe she decided to cut her losses instead of taking the risk of trying again. Sasha’s startled, and more than a little sickened, at how cold she sounds, even in her head. But maybe she’s just getting better at thinking like Gertrude. Maybe she’s just becoming that much more aligned with their common patron. That thought is equally unsettling. Mercifully, Jane seems to recognize her silence as spiraling. “So. What now?”

Regarding less-than-perfect solutions to lingering, and looming, problems.

The main cast of my Two Watchers AU, presenting:

● Elias Bouchard ●

- Head of the Bouchard Institute of Paranormal Studies

- Choose a Lonely Marked guy no one remembered the name of to be his "sucessor" so he could finally keep his original name when body hoping. Not realizing the nepotism acusation.

- Has morals and tries to avoid murder but is still an avatar so still does it.

- Major Eye Avatar through a series of unlikely coincidences, bad choices, bad friends and complicated shennanigans.

- 200 years of this and he still has no clue what he is doing but he thinks is somewhat working? Maybe??

- Smokes A LOT of weed.

- Has a weird thing going on with Peter Lukas (toxic love triangle where at least two of the three people involved hate it).

- Has a massive crush on soft boy Michael Shelley.

- Is trying to launch merch for the Institute for extra money.

- Has multiple failed tentarives of murdering both Jonah and Gertrude (for different reasons).

●Jonah Magnus●

- New employee of the Bouchard Institute of Paranormal Studies

- Only in his late tweenties. But has a very vintage fashion sense (plus eye jewerly at least partialy influenciated by Annabelle)

- The Eye new chosen Watcher (to Elias dispair)

- Had a traumatic enconteer with the End once.

- Never talks about his past but got into supernatural circles young (killed some people) and knows a lot of other avatars. It's friends with Annabelle Cane, or as much as both of them can even call someone a friend.

- Is a very competent avatar and manipulator.

- Elias' assistant (the one that does the actual work)

- Wants to find out how to make a sucessfull Watcher Crown and end the world.

- Has a thing with Peter Lukas (is the one that is enjoying the love triangle).

- When not plotting and being evil he can be found making random spreadsheets with Jon, sleeping around (mostly with donors) or using his powers to steal other people's birthday cakes.

• Gertrude Robinson•

- Comptent queen

- Cold ass bitch

- Ending rituals one explosion at a time.

- Doesn't even consider Elias assassination attempts as a real threat. Does consider Jonah as a threat tho.

- Sacrificed Emma to the Spiral instead (because she discovered Emma true intencions earlier).

- Has some complicated romantic tension with Agnes Montaugue.

● Michael Shelley ●

- Oblivous ray of sunshine

- Oldest of the Archival Assistants

- Thinks he is responsable for the younger assistants and tries his best to take care of them.

- He and Martin had at least one tea making competition.

- Likes Elias but is shy.

- Works with a literal ghost and still just doesn't see the paranormal.

• Sasha James •

- Was called in to replace Emma.

- Besties with Tim and in good terms with Jon.

- It was only her and Michael under there for a bit (and the Delanos but Eric is a ghost and Gerry DOESN'T WORK THERE).

- Gertrude wants her to be the new Archivist.

- Is noisy because she is too curious not to, but tries to use the knowledge for good.

- Believes everyone wears a bit of a mask and it's fine with that.

- Is protective over Michael.

- Requesting Jon and Tim as research support (not really part of the archives but the research team that actually does the follow ups) was her idea after she and Michael had to deal with the chaos that is Halloween in the Archives by themselfs.

● Tim Stoker ●

- Sexy and he knows it.

- Besties with Sasha.

- Works with Jon on research. They are research budies.

- Sasha helped him during the year for extra help on the Halloween influx of fake statement givers mess.

- When Elias decided to turn the extra help into "actually archive work is not researching stuff so having some researchers specifically of the archives makes sense here's a bonus" he accepted it for Sasha's sake but thinks it will help him with Danny.

- Don't let the not really archive tittle get you, he is bound to there.

- Tries to make Jon chill from time to time.

- Calls Elias 'Double Boss' , Gertrude 'Boss' and Jonah 'Boss Jr.', convinced Jon and Michael on calling Sasha 'Future Boss' with him.

- Dresses even wilder because while it deeply annoys Jonah not only Elias has no dress code but Elias always dresses with different punny weed t-shirts (and sometimes punny Eye t-shirts). Gets wose when he discovers it annoys Jonnah.

- Does not like Jonnah from the start.

●Jonnathan Sims●

- Early twenties, baby researcher Jon.

- Recently started walking with Tim and Sasha and is still on the 'holy shit friends' phase.

- Jonah is obcessed with him and it creeps him out soo much.

- OG Elias is exploring him but instead of the original "planning to use him to End the Wolrd", Elias just is a bad boss and is super keen in how much of a workaholic Jon is.

- The weird new tittle was made to go around Gertrude's refusal in hiring new assistants but also was because Elias knew if he did that Jon would work in both places. Jon does. He has two jobs but is only payed for one. Tim is pissed over it.

- Secretly just wants to play DnD.

- Since the Eye was displeased with both it's Archivist and Watcher (until Jonah came along) and Jon started going into the Archives earlier he is already starting to became the Eye specialest lil boy. But it's still way too early for anyone to notice.

- No one understands how come he and Gerry (rebel who doesn't even work here) became friends so easilly but they are cool.

- Isn't mean to Martin because he doesn't have the same reasons so he is just akward with Martin. While annoyed he at least does help Martin with how to do things right this time (as his insecurity over not fitting is canonically the reason he was mean to Martin and he was shocked Martin faked his resume I'm a fiirm beliver paranoia man S1 Jon thought Martin did a bad job on purpose because Martin knew Jon had no clue what he was doing). He is a bit mean to Michael first, because while he gets the whole listening to authority (specially sterm old ladys that scream with you and ignore you), the affection and "must protect Gertrude and my juniors' freaks him out at first.

●Martin Blackwood●

- Elias third favourite employee (first is Rose because he rly rly needs a PA, second is Jon because he can always persuade Jon to make any extra work necessary) because he finds the whole lying on the CV thing hilarious. Elias always smilles at Martin as if they are sharing a joke and is nicer to him than to most. Martin is confused by it.

- Was transfered to the Archives by Jonnah that used his place as personal assistant to saciate his curiosity (and maybe bet with Peter later over the guy).

- Has a crush on Jon, specially after Jon starts to begrundgly help him out.

- Tim likes him very fast.

- Had a dispute over who was the best tea maker with Michael and won.

- Is unconfortable with Michael at first because HE is the one that takes care of people. His coworkers should not be taking care of him and even less ofering him biscuits. Later they start to combo their methods and it gets easier.

- People compare him to Michael, but Martin has bite and knife skills. You'll NOT want to deal with an angry Martin. (He can also be VERY passive-agressive).

- Writes poetry at work.

●Gerard Keay Delano●

- Got Eric page at age 8 and runned from Mary at 13 getting by with the help of the ghost of his dad. Later found a way to take Eric from the book but since was via an artifact Eric's ghost is still around.

- Against Eric's advices decided to help Gertrude but refuses to get hired

- No matter how much Elias tries Gerard does NOT WORK AT THE INSTITUTE. Jonah tried to kick him out once but gave up.

- Basically a third assistant, Sasha and him mostly do the dangerous stuff to protect Michael. They also agreed to keep him in the dark for his sake.

- Thanks to having a bigger support group than Gertrude he discovered his cancer at an early stage and was abble to get treatment.

- Sasha and Jon tried to help him dye his hair better but he still sucks at it.

- He and Jon are friends and no one gets how people that are so different can work so well together and bond the way they did

- It's very criptic and mysterious, Gertrude finds it funny, Sasha thinks it's a bit annoying, Michael and Eric think is cute and Jon thinks is the coolest thing ever. Jon is just very hyped about Gerry in his own Jon way.

- Aro boy. Made out with Tim at an office party.

- Might have made out with Jonah (as a replacement for Albretch) but I'm not sure yet

•Eric Delano•

- Is a ghost

- Connected to the end

- Tried to guide Oliver into avatardoon

- He could accept death still but he hangs on for Gerry's sake

- Really loves his child and wished he could've been a better dad

- Obviously has a massive relationship trauma

- Lots of dad jokes

- Knows a lot about the supernatural

- Fights with Gertrude over how she treats the assistants, it's the only person Gertrude actually listens for out of mutual respct.

After binging The Magnus Archives for exactly two weeks straight it is officially all I can think about. Not even my previous Baldurs Gate 3 obsession can compare. Maybe it’s because it’s strictly a tragedy (which gets my emo little English literature nerd heart spiraling), maybe it’s because the idea of categorizing characters by their fears/what fear they’d be an avatar for is deeply fascinating to me.

Liveblogging TMA - Season 3 - MAG 115-117

"I suppose in some ways it’s strange I’m not a vegetarian yet, what with everything I know."

TAKING STOCK :

Oooooh, a Salesa statement !

And from the man himself, rather than of his poor victims.

He sounds surprisingly decent ? I was expecting more of a bastard to be honnest, but he was an ok boss, I guess ? Though letting his crew eat human meat when you could've stopped it is fucked up, man.

Of course, that one was a Flesh artefact. God, I wonder where they even come from. Gotta agree with Jon here, I am pretty sure that this entire story is just a veiled attempt to make everyone vegetarian.

Jon is antsy, and god do I get him, we're almost getting there after all. Sometimes, i just wish the statements weren't even there or apart of the episode, I am just so eager for more story to happen.

The Helen situation hurt me though. Of course, i get where Jon is coming from, and God knows I wouldn't trust Helen ever, but. Seeing her somewhat struggle with her newfound monsterhood is painful to watch, you know ?

I don't think she could be "saved", or put on a straight path. She isn't human anymore, and it's not even like the avatars, she just got overtaken by The Spiral, but she didn't seek to be. Helen just wanted to escape, but instead, she trapped herself forever in a state that will chip away at her humanity until nothing but the fear and madness are left.

But still, having an ear to listen to her might have helped make the transition less painful, somehow. Of course, it wasn't something Jon was willing to give, too affraid of his own changes to bear see them reflected in Helen.

I think they could've been pretty ok, together. Somehow, anyway.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON :

"They dragged a thing that wasn’t a thing, but instead a mouth upon a tree that hated the Turk and all it brought upon the world."

On today's episode of "The Institute is A Death Trap", the shady and manipulative boss is shady and manipulative, as well as gleefully sending everyone to their probably doom !

How fun.

Except for Martin. That I'm still unsure on whether or not is going to die. Surely Elias wouldn't go for two in one season, right ? One dead assistant achivist is enough per season, I say.

Although ... Season 2 didn't have an archival assistant dying, did it ? Anyway, pretty sure at this point that Martin is just assurance, a back up in case Jon dies doing this.

Loved the statement though. It had a certain kind of whimsy I quite enjoyed, never getting anything ever.

TESTAMENT :

Timothy Stoker :

"I’m gonna hurt them, though. I’m gonna hurt the thing that stole my brother and wrecked my life."

... Yep.

It's confirmed, Tim is the one dying this season.

This is ...Great. Just absolutely wonderful, really. We just can't have nice things, ever, can we ?

... Rest in Peace, Tim. You were entertaining while you lasted, you beautiful suicidal bastard.

He has been a bit frustrating, but never in a way that I couldn't understand. How his character hurt, how he evolved, all of that made sense and fit him. I liked the sarcasm, this guy definitely dethroned Jon as the reigning sass king, in my mind !

I'll miss him.

I hope that his last moments will be the kind to make him proud.

MARTIN BLACKWOOD :

"Like nothing can go back to normal after this."

Honnestly, I still don't care much for Martin, but I'd be lying if he didn't pull at my heartsrings from time to time.

This one being one of them.

He is so easily pushed to the side, overlooked. Never the priority to anyone, and always giving pieces of himself to help others, but never appreciated.

Honnestly, if not for The Web "connections" to him, I'd almost imagine him someone marked by The Lonely, you know ?

He isn't that interesting to me, but he is a damn cutie and I will protect him however I can ! Please Jon, notice the pining baby whenever this fucking mess of over and done with, you know he has feelings for you.

I think Martin would treat Jon pretty well !

That being said, I can't wait to see what Martin's trap will be.

MELANIE KING :

"When did I start to lose the parts of me that weren’t just anger?"

Melanie is ... Complicated. I love my girl. She's kind of a bitch, but you know ? After all the bullshit she went through, she deserves to go apeshit !

Would be nice if she didn't board the Stoker Train destination Blame Jontown, but it is fair and I get it. Her life have been kind of hell, recently. I mean, everyone's is, but I feel for her.

She's resiliant though, and I can admire that.

She should probably check with someone for those anger management issues though.

BASIRA HUSSAIN AND DAISY :

"I think sometimes you feel like you’re adapting, but it’s just denial."

Man, Basira is cool. She's great, a grounding force in the midst of all this chaos and pain and anger. I get why Daisy is so focused on her.

Why they both are so fxed on each other.

Frankly, it is difficult to speak of one without speaking of the other, because they are so connected. I can't imagine one living without the other without absolutely falling appart, somehow.

Daisy in a murderous rage, obviously, but you get me.

JONATHAN SIMS :

"That same petty little part of me rather hopes it doesn’t."

God, he is so tired. And he is trying so hard to understand the others, to trust them, even if it isn't even possible for him at this point, he makes the choice to do anyway, and I just.

God, he hurts me in the best of ways. Focus on yourself baby, take a break after all this, please.

With Martin, maybe ?

After all, he did listen to the same tapes as we did. Wonder how surprised he was over the "gossip". Can't imagine he didn't know already, the guy hasn't exactly been subtle, nor has anyone around him, but it's ok. Martin is cute enough that we forgive him.

It's funny, I am trying to make a section entirely about Jon, but I still can't not mention others, because even his own part of the episode was him focusing on them, rather than himself, at least not for long.

I guess it makes sense. Just like The Eye, he is always watching. An Eye hardly can watch itself.

The quote of the post will be :

Some thoughts on the Endless, the Fears, and how certain not-quite-mortals might fair in the Eyepocolypse.

When compared to the Endless, the Fears had not been around very long. Oh, they thought themselves ancient (as much as any of them were capable of thinking), and to mortal minds they were. They had been around since before the dawn of humanity, after all. Around long enough for their age to make them arrogant, make them think themselves equals to the Endless, or perhaps greater than them.

The Endless, however, were far older than that. The children of Time and Night found these entities to be nuisances at best. At worst, they were upstarts encroaching on their territory. The age and power of the Endless meant the fact they had yet to get rid of the Fears all the more infuriating. Especially seeing as certain ones did overlap and interfere with their domains.

The End was the least annoying, if you asked Death. Sure, it and its Avatars claimed credit for her work, but she wasn't doing it for credit. It made her job a little harder, but people feared her Gift even without the help of an eldritch fear entity. Its efforts didn't really matter, when it came down to it. She won small victories over the End every day; it couldn't stop her from showing up to take even the ones it had the strongest claims on to the Sunless Lands, and she had long been an expert on soothing people's fears and bringing them comfort.

(Even those trapped in the book once held by Mary Keay would someday go with her. She was there when Jonathan Sims burned Gerard Keay's page, and though he had been suspicious he had gone with her gladly once she assured him that he was finally free and could find rest.)

(Dream did not share his sister’s opinion on the End. It was constantly encroaching on the Dreaming, something he could not tolerate. Yet no matter how many times he banished it, the End always found a new dreamer to sink its hooks into.

It was the second most annoying Fear, in Dream's opinion.)

Despair could almost appreciate the Lonely. Loneliness often lead to her realm, and the Lonely hovered at its borders. But very few of its victims found their way to her. Oh, they despaired, but like all the other entities the Lonely held tight to those in its grasp and did not give them up easily. It also would not allow mirrors, further limiting her access. Desire found the Lonely amusing. People who are lonely often ache with desire for another's company, after all.

Desire was also fascinated with the Web. True manipulation requires knowing and being able to twist someone's desires. And if the convoluted plans that the entity was known for gave Desire ideas for their own plans, well. It made their games more interesting.

("He wants subtle? He'll get subtle." Desire growled as their carriage pulled away from Dream's retreating form, the King of Pain licking their shoes, contrite. And they sought out the nearest spider, watching the tireless work put into a plan that spanned years…)

It was impossible for an outside observer to determine what Delirium thought of the Spiral. She felt at home in the hallways of the Distortion (had held the hand of that little piece of Michael as he wept and raged against his fate), and perhaps she liked the entity it represented. But there was no joy in its madness (and the little part of her that remembered being Delight wept with Michael), so perhaps she didn't.

(Delirium was there in the Unknowing, dancing with clowns and acrobats and Archival Assistants. She was by Tim Stoker's side when he pressed the detonator, and stayed with him until her older sister came to collect him. She watched his anger melt into acceptance, tears welling in his eyes when Death told him, "Danny's waiting for you.")

If one could find the Prodigal, where his siblings couldn't, he would refuse to acknowledge the Desolation. It was simply further proof that he wasn't needed.

Destiny had no opinion on the Fears. All was as written in his book, and not even the Dread Powers could escape that.

The most irksome of the Fears, in Dream's opinion, was the Eye. It had recently risen to this position, having taken advantage of Dream's imprisonment to seize a portion of the Dreaming. It completely cut that portion off from the rest, and Dream felt it like a missing limb once he was freed. After retrieving his tools and dealing with the overdue Dream Vortex, he tried many times to breach the walls the Eye had put up. That he was unsuccessful enraged him. The Eye abducted dreamers from the true Dreaming, making them relive their entity-induced trauma in nightmares not of Dream's making, with no purpose other than to feed. Worse, it forced its Archivist to watch, continuously damaging his psyche.

(The man who appeared in Jon's dreams while he slept in Upton House had no true eyes, and it was a comforting thing. He doubted the Eye could spy on him through twin stars set into empty, shadowed sockets. The man spoke of things he didn't understand, of a place that Jon used to go to regularly but didn't anymore, and how he would be welcome again now that the Eye's influence was blocked. He told Jon he would have good dreams, that it was all he could do since he and most of his siblings were blocked from their duties. None of it made sense to Jon–and it should have been infuriating, having one more thing not fully explained, yet another cosmic entity taking liberties while telling him almost nothing, but it somehow wasn't, and maybe it was because his head was quieter than it had been in a long time, or some quality in the low, even voice that made him trust that for once, this powerful being truly meant him no harm. Especially since he did have good dreams; he dreamed of Martin and the cabin and good cows. And for a few days, that was enough to put the hunger out of his mind.)

(It wasn't only Avatars or those touched and changed by the Fears who walked freely in the hellscape of Jonah Magnus' triumph. Rose Walker, former Vortex and Child of the Endless, found herself responsible for both her brother Jed and little Daniel Hall. They searched for any sign of Lyta or Carl or Hal to no avail. They grew desperate enough for Rose to try calling for Dream, which she never thought she'd willingly do.

Though Dream could not reach them, they found a man similarly unaffected by the supernatural forces that had twisted the world. He had warm eyes and a warm smile and his arms settled around Daniel with the care and experience of someone who had been a father before, though it had been a long time. He told them to call him Hob. Daniel and Jed took an immediate liking to him, and though Rose was more wary, she couldn't deny it was better to have him around. They ran into a woman named Johanna Constantine, but she declined to travel with them. Rose and Jed were disappointed, since a bigger group was presumably safer, but Hob didn't mind; her uncanny resemblance to her ancestor put him on edge.

When they stopped to rest, Rose and Jed huddled together while Hob gently rocked Daniel. He filled the hours with stories, about a man who declared he would not die, and the Stranger (Hob's Stranger, not the entity that fed off of people's fear of strangers and uncanny valleys) who met with him every century in order to see how long he would hold that conviction.

After the Fears were banished, screaming, from the world, Dream found them, the immortal and the Children of the Endless and the child conceived in the Dreaming still together. Hob had thrown himself over the other three, so certain in his immortality that he didn't hesitate to use his body to shield his more vulnerable companions.

There were reunions both enthusiastic and hesitant, along with a chorus of "Wait, you know him!?" that lead to hysterical, relieved laughter from the adult humans, while Dream and Jed watched in confusion and Daniel babbled as babies do. Rose found her fear of Dream lessened after realizing he was the person in Hob's stories. Dream found that he felt even more amazed by his oldest friend, who had kept his niece and nephew and the child who may yet be important to the Dreaming safe. Hob found out exactly how grateful Dream was for that, and barely had enough time to pass off Daniel to Rose before he started to express his gratitude.)

(As the knife sank into him, Jon held tightly to his dreams from Upton House, and to Martin. He held on to hope, for freedom…and for Someplace Else.)

Y'know, despite it all." The next panel shows Sasha from above, she's blushing and raising one hand and says: "Yeah..." This is followed by a close up of her raised hand shown against the ceiling, the panel is cut off by another showing the same hand with spirals on the knuckles and long pointed extensions on her fingers, the ceiling is replaced by a yellow and pink spiral and the panel is surrounded by pink spirals. A close up of Sasha's eyes shows her looking shocked.

3: Sasha shoots upright, staring at her hand and screaming. Her speech bubble has a faint multicoloured spiral in it. Tim turns around with a worried look and asks: "Sasha?" The next panel shows Sasha from the front, still staring at her hand. Tim has stood up, clutching one hand to his chest, and asks: "What's wrong? Are you okay?" Sasha looks behind her, surrounded by spirals and a wide, toothy grin, and replies: "Oh, um, I'm fine, just-". Tim looks her in the eye and cuts her off: "Bullshit."
