I think you really start appreciating Supernatural once you follow the trail each writer has paved. For instance, I can't believe Jeremy Carver pulled these parallel scenes off. It's so beautiful because it shows how faith works on some people and how painful and deep the betrayal can feel.

The Choice Is Yours
Tumblr media
Title: The Choice Is Yours Summary: With Dean hell bent on saying yes to Michael, (Y/N) makes a bold move of her own that sends everyone spiraling head first into the Apocalypse. Main Characters: Dean Winchester, Reader Minor Characters: Sam Winchester, Castiel, Bobby Singer, Adam Mulligan Pairing: Dean Winchester x Reader Rating: E - Everyone Warnings: Angst/Fluff Word Count: 1679 Quote Prompt: You make me want to be a better man. (As Good as it Gets) SPN Episode Prompt: Point of No Return S5E18 A/N: This is my fic for @dean-winchester-is-a-warrior 500 Follower Celebration
Adam Mulligan sat staring at his older brothers with the same dumb Winchester determination (Y/N) had seen on Sam and Dean’s faces.
“Um, 'cause they're angels.”
Sam sighed, “They tell you they were gonna roast half the planet?”
“They said the fight might get pretty hairy, but it is the devil, right? So we got to stop him.”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes from her spot near the front hall of Bobby Singer’s house. Not hours ago, she and Sam with Castiel’s help had dragged Dean back from the edge of oblivion. Her boyfriend hell bent on saying yes to his destiny of being an archangel’s meatsuit. Now, the angels’ plan B was sitting in front of them. A scared young man who only wanted one thing… to see his mom again. She could see how Adam would be the logical next step from Dean. To be honest, if she had to choose, without a second thought she would sacrifice Adam in a heartbeat for Dean.
“Yeah, but there's another way.” Sam was grasping at straws and his brothers knew it.
Adam questioned him, “Great. What is it?”
Tumblr media
“We're working on "the power of love.” Dean’s voice was lined with sarcasm.
Adam scoffed, “How's that going?”
Dean smirked, “Hmm. Not good.”
That is when (Y/N) had heard enough and walked out the front door. The sun was disappearing beneath the horizon and the sky was giving in to the darkness of night. The first few stars began to twinkle bright and she closed her eyes.
“I know you can hear me, Zachariah. If you want Adam then you can have him. Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Small junkyard outside of the city. Come get him and leave Dean Winchester alone.”
When she opened her eyes, a bright star shot across the sky. A sign of acknowledgement? An answer to her prayer? She did not know nor did she care. Her only focus was keeping Dean the hell away from the dickbag archangel.
A few hours later, Bobby’s house was in chaos. Dean had blown Castiel off to who knows where with an angel sigil. When Sam went to look for him, Adam had disappeared.
“Bobby, what do you mean, “Adam is gone?”
Bobby stared up at Sam, “Should I say it in Spanish?”
Sam shouted, “He’s gone how? What the hell, Bobby?!”
“Watch your tone, boy. He was right in front of me, and he disappeared into thin air.” Bobby shouted back.
(Y/N) snapped her phone shut, “Dammit Dean! Answer your goddamn phone!”
Castiel appeared in the middle of Bobby’s study carrying a bloody and battered Dean.
The angel spoke matter-of-factly, “Because the angels took him.”
Sam helped Castiel place Dean on the couch as (Y/N) rushed over. She began to wipe the blood from Dean’s face. His lip was busted and there was a nasty gash on his cheek.
“What the hell happened to him?” Sam asked.
Castiel’s answer was simple, “Me.”
(Y/N) saw red before making a beeline straight to the damn angel of the lord. Bobby grasped her elbow, shaking his head.
“Not now, (Y/N).” He looked at Castiel, “What do you mean, the angels took Adam? You branded his ribs, didn’t you?”
“Yes. Adam must have tipped them.”
(Y/N) felt her cheeks burn. She focused on Dean lying on the couch in order not to give away who truly tipped the angels off. None of them, not even Sam, would understand why she did what she did.
“How?” Bobby asked, letting her go so she could continue cleaning up the blood from Dean’s face.
“I don’t know. Maybe in a dream.”
She felt the guilt pressing down on her shoulders as moved a strand of Dean’s hair from his forehead. Looking up at Sam, she opened her lips to speak but he spoke before she could.
“Well, where would they have taken him?”
“I think I know where.” Castiel disappeared with a fluttering of feathers.
Sam ran his hands through his hair before taking Dean’s arm lifting him onto his shoulder.
(Y/N) went on the other side of Dean helping Sam to carry him, “Where are you taking him?”
“Back down to the panic room. It’s the only way to keep him from doing anything stupid and to keep him safe.”
She helped get Dean back into the panic room and flinched hearing the cuffs snap close around Dean’s wrist. Sitting beside him on the bed, (Y/N) watched as Sam went back upstairs to Bobby. Closing her eyes, she was trying to hold back the tears for the man lying next to her.
“I hope you’ll understand what I did, what I did. I know how much family means to you whether you knew he was your brother or not. I only hope that you’ll forgive me for what I’ve done.”
When she stood up, Dean’s hand grasped hers, “(Y-Y/N)... word to the wise: don’t piss off the nerd angels. So how’s it going?”
“Adam’s gone. The angels have him.”
They both turned to see Sam walking through the iron door frame.
Dean sat up, “Where?”
“The room where they took you.” Sam sat down at the small desk across from her and Dean.
“You sure?” She asked.
Sam nodded, “Cas did a re-con.”
“And?”
Sam gave Dean a knowing glance, “And the place is crawling with mooks…Pretty much a no-shot-in-hell, hail-Mary kind of thing.”
“Ah, so the usual. What are you going to do?” Dean scoffed.
“For starters…I’m bringing you with.”
“Excuse me?” (Y/N) and Dean asked together.
Sam unlocked Dean’s handcuffs, releasing him. (Y/N) stared up at Sam trying to silently convey her utter shock and discomfort of letting Dean go.
“There are too many of them. We can’t do it alone. And uh, you’re pretty much the only game in town.”
Dean asked as he rubbed his wrist, “Isn’t that a bad idea?”
“Cas and Bobby think so. I’m not so sure.”
“Well, they’re right. Because either it’s a trap to get me there to make me say yes, or it’s not a trap and I’m gonna say yes anyway. And I will. I’ll do it. Fair warning.”
Her eyes tore away from Sam over to Dean, narrowing on him, “Dean Winchester don’t you dare say that.”
“No, you won’t. When push shoves, you’ll make the right call.” Sam walked towards the door.
“You know, if tables were turned…I’d let you rot in here. Hell, I have let you rot in here.” Dean spouted off.
Sam smirked, “Yeah, well…I guess I’m not that smart.”
(Y/N) could see Dean was at his wits end with Sam’s back and forth. Frankly, she was pissed that Sam. After all they had done to keep Dean from saying yes to Michael, now he wanted to hand him over on a silver plate.
“I—I don’t get it. Sam, why are you doing this?” Dean asked.
Sam paused for a moment. (Y/N) could see the tears welling up in his eyes. The grief of what could happen and they lost that was to come shining within them.
“Because… you’re still my big brother.”
It was not long after that Castiel zapped them all to Van Nuys, California. Within moments of arriving (Y/N) watched Castiel take on five angels blowing them and himself to parts unknown. Dean rushed inside the room with Sam right behind him while (Y/N) was to wait outside taking out any reinforcements.
Suddenly, a familiar high pitch ringing pierced her ears. A blinding white light surrounded the small shed that held the two most important people in her life. The door snapped open with Dean carrying Sam out and immediately slammed shut behind him.
“Hold on! We’ll get you out. Just hold on. Adam! Can you hear me?!” Dean yelled trying to touch the glowing knob.
The light grew brighter making them all shield their eyes and then faded to darkness. Rushing over, she stood behind Dean seeing an old abandoned office where the light had been coming from.
“W-Where’s Adam?” She asked as Dean’s jaw clenched.
The first few hours of their trip home was in silence after Sam and Dean had hashed out their emotions. Sam was now in the backseat sleeping while (Y/N) rode shotgun staring out the window.
“Sweetheart, whatever you’re thinking just say it.”
She wiped the wayward tear from her cheek, “Why did you really change your mind?”
He scoffed softly, “What do you mean?”
(Y/N) turned in her seat to face him, “I know you truly didn’t want to let Sam down, but he was right about you being fully committed to saying yes to Michael. So, what was the real reason you changed your mind?”
Dean ran his hand over the back of his neck letting out a sigh. His eyes never left the road and finally she turned back towards the window wallowing in the guilt consuming her heart. What seemed like hours later, Dean finally answered her.
“You.”
“Me?” She asked, “What about me?”
“You changed my mind. I kept thinking about how I finally have the best of both worlds. An apple pie life with a woman I love and the family business. Ever since I came back from hell and we got together, I’ve been changing slowly… all because of you.”
“Dean, I…” She began to say until Dean continued talking.
“You make me want to be a better man. You make me want to live life. You make me want to defy destiny and kick it in the ass. I want to be the one who makes my own destiny, lives my own life. I want it to be with you and I wouldn’t be able to if I had some asshat archangel wearing me to the prom.”
“I love you too, Winchester,” (Y/N) slid over the seat beside him and kissed his cheek, “Now as a wise man once said, let’s kill some holier-than-thou sons of bitches and we raise a little hell.”

Dean hasn’t spoken to you since your fight. He’s still beyond pissed at you for what you did, and you can’t blame him. He has every right to scream at you, and you’re surprised he hasn’t gotten physical about it. Sure, he would never hit you on purpose, but the anger you saw in him last night told you he was on the brink. Maybe that’s why he left. You don’t know where he went to, who he saw, or what he did. At this point, all you care about is if he’s safe and sound.
Sam easily found him with little effort, and despite your arguments that he didn’t want to see you, he made you go with him anyway.
“Sam, he doesn’t want to see me. He hates me.”
“He doesn’t hate you. I know my brother, and I know the love he has for you.”
“Yeah, well, you didn't see the anger in his eyes. He won’t want to see me or talk to me. I don’t blame him,” you sigh.
“Okay, you have got to stop with the self-loathing. You made a mistake. It’s not like you can’t make another child if you two really wanted to.”
“Would he though? How can I expect him to just forgive me like that? How can I expect him to trust me ever again? He won’t!”
“Then make another child.”
“That’s not the issue, Sam. Yeah, we can make one, but I don’t want it to grow up in a world like this. Do you honestly expect me to raise a child like how we were? I can say that I won’t just like your mom did, but there is always going to be something. I’m a fucking witch for crying out loud! I will always be involved! How can I put a child through what we went through? Up until yesterday, I thought that’s what Dean wanted too.”
“You’re going to have to talk to him,” Sam says as he approaches a motel door.
“Yeah, later.”
“No, now. Castiel will be here any minute, so we need to get this over with.”
“Fine,” you huff.
Sam picks the door lock and opens the door to see Dean packing his things into a cardboard box. Wait, he just put his car keys and gun into the box. Is he planning on doing something stupid? Where did he go last night? If he says yes to Michael, then you’re going to be the only one to blame here. Your news is what pushed him over the edge, you know it.
“Sending someone a candy-gram?” Sam comments, and Dean looks at his brother through the mirror in front of him.
His eyes shift to you, and he quickly looks away in haste.
“Get out.”
“Dean,” whimper.
He puts his hand up to silence you since he can’t stand the sound of your voice right now. He shakes his head and decides to ignore you, only addressing his brother.
“How’d you find me?”
“You’re going to kill yourself, right? It’s not too hard to figure out the stops on the Farewell Tour,” Sam scoffs.
“Who did you see last night?” you ask.
“I’m not going to kill myself,” Dean directs his comment to Sam, and your shoulders sag in sadness.
“No? So Michael’s not about to make you his Muppet? What the hell, man? This is how it ends? You just… walk out?”
“Yeah, I guess,” he shrugs.
“Dean, I know I made a mistake, but please don’t do this. How could you do that?”
“How could I?” he yells, pointing his glare at you. “How could you! No, you know what, I am not doing this. Get. Out.”
“I’ll be outside,” you whisper and leave the room immediately.
“Dean, she made a mistake. You can make another one,” Sam sighs.
“That’s not the fucking point, Sam! She lied to my face! She was going to go on like nothing happened if Leah hadn’t said anything! I mean, she told you before she told me!”
“I get why you’re angry, but we have more pressing matters right now. Bobby is working on something.”
“Oh, really? What?” Dean asks, but Sam doesn’t answer. “You got nothing and you know it.”
“You know I have to stop you,” he sighs.
“Yeah, well, you can try. Just remember, you’re not all hopped up on demon blood this time.”
“Yeah, I know, but I brought help.”
“Who, Y/N? She won’t and can’t do shit,” he growls, and your heart tears at the edges.
Your bottom lip trembles as you listen in by the door. Sam left the door open so you can hear exactly what they were saying.
“No, not her.”
Dean’s eyes widen in realization, and he turns around when he heard the flutter of wings from behind. Castiel stands there with a look of determination and touches his forehead, knocking him out.
“Y/N, you can come in now,” Sam sighs.
“I told you he hates me,” you sniffle.
“Let’s just get back to your dad’s. We can at least hold him there until we figure out a plan,” Sam strategizes.
Tumblr media
“What’s been going on with you lately?” your dad asks as Dean paces the room.
After Castiel brought him to your dad’s house, everyone’s been twiddling their thumbs trying to figure out a game plan. Michael is coming either way, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets a hold of something that he can use as leverage against Dean to make him say yes. Sam thing goes for Lucifer and Sam. You just wish Amara was getting released so you could deal with something more than what you’re going through right now.
Your father sits at his desk, Sam sits on the opposite side of it, you are underneath the door frame that separates the kitchen and the library, Castiel rests against a small bookshelf to your right, and Dean still paces the room. Whenever he gets close to you, he backtracks and turns around. Sam says he doesn’t hate you, but his actions are telling you a different story.
“Yeah, no, this is good. Really. You know, eight months of turned pages and screwed pooches but tonight’s when the magic happens,” he said sarcastically.
“You ain’t helping,” your dad grumbles.
“Yeah, well, why don’t you let me get out of your hair, then?”
“What the hell happened to you?”
“Reality happened. Do you know what your daughter did to me? Did she ever tell you what she did? Go ahead, Y/N, tell him how you got pregnant and then had Castiel kill the baby all because you didn't want to raise a child in this shithole!” he yells at you.
Tears stream down your face at the truth he’s spitting. You can feel every pair of eyes on you, but you refuse to look at any of them.
“Is that true?” your dad asks.
“Yes,” you whisper.
“See? That, plus what’s going on, is enough to end things! Nuclear is the only option we have left. Michael can ice the devil and save a boatload of people.”
“But not all of them. We gotta think of something else,” your dad sighs, and he continues to look at you.
He is shocked that you got pregnant and killed the baby, but he can understand why you did it. After all, it’s the reason why he left your mother in the first place. He didn't want to raise a child in his messed-up life, and she wanted to keep you. If he’d known she was a witch back then, he would have stayed and helped her. There are a lot of things he should have done back then, but he can only move forward, and it sounds like you want to as well. However, Dean’s making it difficult to.
“Yeah, well, that’s easy for you to say. But if Lucifer burns this motherfucker down, and I could have done something about it, then guess what? That’s on me.”
“You can’t give up, son,” your dad sighs.
“Yeah, well, you're not my father, and you ain’t in my shoes,” Dean bites.
Both you and Sam look at Dean in shock. How can he say that? Your dad has been a better father to Sam and Dean than John ever was. Your dad reaches into his desk, pulls out a handgun, and sets it on the table. He takes a bullet out of the pocket on his shirt.
“What is that?” you whisper in fear.
“That’s the round that I mean to put through my skull,” he says truthfully.
Tears stream down your face and you sigh deeply. It sucks that your own father thought about taking his own life. It says something that he couldn’t do it, but he did and is constantly thinking about it.
“Every morning I look at it. I think, ‘maybe today’s the day I flip the lights out’. But I don’t do it. I never do it. You know why? Because I promised you I wouldn’t give up! What kind of a father would I be if I left my daughter in the hands of you? You’ve made me a proud man, I’ll admit that, but you’re disappointing me now.”
This whole room stinks of disappointment and regret, and it’s hard for you to breathe. All of this is proving to be too much for you to handle. You don’t have long to dwell on it because Castiel grasps his head and hunches over in pain.
“Castiel, you okay?” you ask and rush over to him.
“No,” he hesitates.
“What is it?”
“Something’s happening,” he says vaguely.
Without warning, he disappears to God only knows where. Now that the only neutral person is gone, it becomes very awkward. The air thickens with tension, and Dean is the first to leave. The news dropped on him is too much for him to handle, and you can see that it’s taken a toll on his body and mind. Sam gets up and follows him to give you some privacy time with your dad.
“Y/N,” he whispers.
“I didn’t want to keep it from you, but everything happened so fast,” you cry.
“Why’d you do it?”
“I don’t want my child growing up in this life. I know how hard it is, and I don’t want them going through what Dean, Sam, and I went through.”
“Your mom and Mary died. That’s why John got into it in the first place. Your mom raised you out of the hunter life until she couldn’t. I know if you had a child, you’ll keep them out of it.”
“Do you hate me?” you whisper, your eyes beat red.
“I could never hate you.”
“Dean does.”
“No, he doesn’t.”
“He hates me. I messed up, and I don’t know how to make it right.”
“Give him time, he’ll come around. He has to process this in his own time. He’ll come back when he’s ready.”
“How can you be so sure we’re going to be okay?”
“Because your mom was. And I know she raised you to have hope, and to never give up,” he says truthfully.
Just as soon as Castiel was gone, he’s back with a body draped over his shoulder. The wind from the teleportation forces papers to fly about the room.
“Help,” the angel grunts, and lays the body onto the couch.
Even with all the dirt on his face, you knew exactly who this is.
“Sam! Dean!” you call out urgently.
Both brothers rush into the room to see their half-brother lying out cold on the couch.
“Who is that?” your father asks.
“Our brother,” Sam answers.
“Wait a minute. Your brother? Adam?”
“Castiel, what the hell? What happened?” you ask.
“Angels.”
“Angels? Why?”
“I know one thing for sure. We need to hide him now,” he ignores the question, and puts his hand on Adam’s chest. He does what you assume he did to you and the brothers—brand his rubs with the same Enochian writing that you have. Castiel moves his hand away once the branding is over, and Adam shoots awake. Everyone jumps back in shock, but you move closer to him.
“Where am I?”
“It’s okay, you’re safe. No one is going to hurt you,” you promise.
Dean watches how caring you were towards Castiel and now toward Adam, and he looks away painfully. He always knew you were mother material, so he couldn’t understand why you would get rid of his child just like that. This is more about raising a child in this life. If John and Bobby can do it, then you two certainly can. There is something else you’re not telling him, and as much as he wants to find out, he’s still very pissed at you.
“Who the hell are you?” he asks you.
“I’m Y/N, and those two are Sam and Dean. See, they’re your brothers. Well, half-brothers. John Winchester—”
“Yeah, I know who you three are,” he sighs.
“How?” Sam wonders.
“The angels warned me about you. Now, where’s Zachariah?” Adam asks, trying to get up.
You put your hand on his shoulder to prevent that from happening. He’s covered in dirt from being buried underground this entire time, and he’s not in the right mind to go looking for the angel he wants.
