soft steve thought: anytime you cry he pushes up the sleeves of his sweater or jacket and brushes your tears away w them bc he’s an attentive cutie. one day you’re wearing one of his sweaters and you do the same thing for him and he’s like :o
okay so COINCIDENTALLY i think i had reader wipe away steve's tears in a similar manner in my hurt/comfort, steve-visits-max-in-the-hospital-post-s4 fix it fic that i wrote a while back, so if you wanna see this in more of a fic setting instead of just little steve thoughts, the fic can be found here! i totally recommend it, it was something i was really proud of writing a few months ago!!!
anyway, let's get into this one, which is SO super cute btw!!
even if you aren't the most emotional person, everyone cries for some reason or another, and no matter that reason, steve can always sense it. he sees the way you worry your bottom lip between your teeth, watches as your eyes grow distant, undoubtedly trying to hold yourself together - in hawkins, doesn't everyne have to be brave? it's practically a residential requirement at this rate.
so, after whatever is going on is over - only in the cases where it's life or death, otherwise you're steve's number one priority as his partner!! - steve harrington is the absolute first person to whisk you away to try and talk to you, or even to just let you cry for a while. he knows sometimes there's no benefit to talking through it, and he's more than okay with holding you and keeping you grounded while you do.
one thing about these moments is always the same, though, and it's that steve always, always, ALWAYS picks you up after. he uses the end of his sweater sleeves or jacket sleeves to wipe away your tears, sometimes silently, sometimes whispering little words of encouragement into the space between you.
"shh, it'll be okay," "you've got me now," "i'll take care it, promise," etc, etc.
if you end up crying about something a little less serious - something silly or from an excess of love - he'll give you a slightly worried smile, chuckling a little as he wipes them away instantly and shakes his head. "c'mon, baby, don't cry."
and, after all this treatment from him, when he finally decides he feels safe enough to open up to you - undeniably coming with a few tears at least - what else are you to do but the same thing he does to you? you take the end of your fuzzy sweater and gently wipe away at his eyes, and it's such a soft, intimate moment, combined with his realization that you care about him just as much as he cares about you, instantly makes him crack a smile. and although that definitely makes him cry a little harder, for different reasons now, you grow to learn that it's a certain way to cheer him up, to remind him of how much you pay attention and love him <3

Eddie calls Steve's horrid bedroom, "Stevie's plaid-nightmare box".
The first time he says it, Steve huffs a laugh because it is an accurate description and one that only Eddie would conjure up. The second time he says it, Steve gets all sad about it because yes, his plaid bedroom is drab and somehow shrouded in darkness, even with the curtains open. And yeah, it reminds him of his mother, who picked the wallpaper herself and searched high and low for a matching bedspread and how she's never around. Eddie noticed Steve had gotten all quiet about it, gave an apologetic, "sorry" and never said the creative quip again.
That is until he finally meets Steve's mum. It's in passing, he'd arrived at the house early and Steve's parents were running late to leave once again. The door was wide open with luggage in the front entryway. He has his overnight bag ready, slung over his shoulder, plus his guitar and he just bumbles inside, van parked crooked outside.
Steve's mother appears in the hall, just as Steve begins a decent down the wooden staircase. He freezes, his mother stops mid-stride and Eddie pauses just before dumping his bag next to the suitcases.
"Hello," says Mrs Harrington, giving a tight-lipped barely-there smile.
"Hi," he says, curtseying. He can hear Steve groan at the gesture before he hurries down the stairs.
"Er, Mum? This is my... friend, Eddie," he stutters, not looking at her as he moves to grab the guitar case, subtly pushing away Eddie's hand that is clutched around his black lunchbox.
"Oops," he mumbles, shielding it behind his back.
They both straighten up and grin at Mrs Harrington, who says nothing - her expression turning into more of a glare.
"I'll just take my stuff up to the plaid-nightmare box," he says pointedly before rushing up the stairs.
Steve quickly follows along, giggling.

Maybe I’m too much of a sucker for evil labs and fucked up science experiments but I think the super-soldier aspect of Captain America: super soldier with a shield should be emphasized more.

A Little Closer
Tumblr media
pairing: Steve Harrington/Female Reader
summary: There is a time and place to proclaim your love for somebody, and being injured and trapped in the Upside Down is not one of them.
warnings/extra tags: cursing, reader and steve arguing for no reason, and some kissing tm. >>>SPOILERS FOR ST4<<<, not beta read i edited myself but can't be trusted either.
note: I haven't written an imagine for him in a hot minute, and I say this because I have an ongoing series so check out my masterlist ;) Anyway, I wrote this with a dream my friend had about him in mind (she knows who she is). Thanks in advance for reading and please enjoy!
✧ ✧ ✧
You liked Steve Harrington, a lot. And have since you first met in that junk yard years ago when you were introduced to the creatures of this other dimension they called ‘the Upside Down’
Only then you just liked him, because these days you were pretty sure you were hopelessly in love with the guy. This didn’t mean he couldn’t get on your nerves though, especially when he treated you like you incapable of doing literally anything.
"No, you're not going down there."
Steve's voice was firm as he spoke, his words directed at you as you were starting to unbutton your Hawkins Letterman jacket, preparing to dive into Lover’s Lake and see if this gate was down there like Dustin theorized.
"Says who?" You bit back as you were pulling the jacket off, "Robin said Nancy was in charge, not you, Steve."
"Yeah well, I was the co-captain of the swim team and have had life guard certification for 3 years, so logically, it should be me," Steve stated as he too began to undress starting with his shoes all the while Eddie, Nancy, and Robin just watched. You scoffed at him.
"And I was the Captain of the girls swim and water polo team, and have had my certification for 3 and a half years,” you replied, “Can someone tell me which is better?"
They looked awkwardly at each other until Robin began to speak.
"I mean...technically speaking you both had similar responsibilities as a captain and co-captain, but I mean…” her eyes went to Steve who was looking at her with raised brows, “She doesn't have the co in front of hers and didn't have to share responsibility, and uh…her certification beats yours by half a year…so...I would say hers is better."
Steve shot a look at Robin as he was taking off one shoe as fast as he could.
"Gee. Thanks for taking my side Robin," he told her with a scoff while Robin shrugged and claimed she only said so because you asked, "It's just dangerous alright? There could be a gate down there, or worse Vecna could be there- and I don't think you should-"
"Look, out of everyone here I feel like I've been the most useless, and I'm taking the chance to do my part," you explained briefly, "Let me do this because I can do this."
"I know you can, but that doesn't mean you should-"
“And why not? No matter who goes down there the risks are all the same,” you said tearing your t-shirt off now, leaving you in just a tank top and your Hawkins gym shorts.
Steve was untying his other shoe now, trying not to become distracted by your sudden loss of layers, and argued, “Yes, but I don’t want you to take the risk-”
“So anyone but me can?” You gave him an odd look, one that made Steve shake his head quickly.
“No- No I didn’t say-”
"Okay. Are you two seriously going to argue who gets to swim to a possible underwater gate to another dimension where yet another thing is trying to kill us?" Robin was asking, successfully making you and Steve finally go quiet, “Is this a regular occurrence? Arguing over who gets to do risky shit? Because I think this happened last time too.”
She remembered how when coming up with a plan to infiltrate what they thought to be a simple stock room at Starcourt, Steve argued against pretty much any plan that involved you risking your life. Many valuable minutes were wasted with arguments like this with you two going back and forth.
It was almost embarrassing honestly that Steve didn’t realize how into you he actually was or how into him you were because for everyone else on this boat, and on the shore line, it was pretty obvious and has been for quite some time. This was just more evidence of it.
“No, we’re not arguing because we all already decided I’m going,” Steve said, making you laugh and toss your shirt at him before he could even think about taking his other shoe off. It hit his face and momentarily blinded him.
“We decided? No, you decided. Are you implying this needs to be voted on Steve?”
Steve took your shirt in his hands, and looked back at you, “Well maybe it should be- Robin who do you think-”
“I think the one who is already ready to go should go, you still have one shoe on and she does not,” Robin replied quickly as she was shoving the flashlight in the plastic bag Eddie had handed to her.
Steve groaned, “Are you never going to take my side or something Robin? I’m getting hurt over here.”
You were twisting your neck side to side, a pleasant smile on your lips that Robin chose you, but it hadn’t compared to when Nancy finally spoke up.
“Let her do it," Nancy told Steve, then cringed as her eyes went to yours, "Not because I think you're useless or anything, but I've been to enough swim meets for the paper throughout the year to know she's damn good…and she does hold the Hawkins High record for how long she could hold her breath...she can do it, Steve."
It was always nice to have Nancy Wheeler on your side, especially when it was Steve on the opposite side. He always seemed to listen to her and take her words to heart and while other times in this friendship of yours he seemed to drop everything and listen to her it made you feel a tad bit jealous, this time you felt satisfied.
“And like I said, I know she can, better than me, and certainly better than the rest of you, but what if-”
“Dude I’m about to dive down there just so I don’t have to hear you argue for another minute,” Eddie interrupted for the first time since your argument started, “I mean, I’m not going to, of course, but the fact that I was tempted to says a lot. You just gotta trust your girl, Harrington.”
All eyes went to him besides yours at his statement. You kept your gaze trained on Steve, seeing his expression turn from grumpy to confusion then to what you confused with amusement rather than nervousness.
“What? My girl? She isn’t…” he laughed, and you hated how a small part of your heart cracked, “She isn’t my girl, if anything she’s all of our girl-” he cleared his throat as he realized how weird that sounded, “I mean, she’s nobody’s girl, but definitely, definitely not mine-”
Nancy cringed at Steve’s words, and Robin had rolled her eyes for you while Eddie just raised a brow. You were frowning now, turning away from all them after you snatched the flashlight from Robin with a little too much force. Her eyes snapped to yours, being the only one to see your aggravated expression and understanding why.
While Steve’s concern was appreciated and not exactly unwanted, you were starting to get annoyed with him. Sometimes it really felt like when he was with you and the kids…he just saw you as one of the kids he had to keep an eye on and not as… something else.
Well, he didn’t get to tell you what to do, especially now when everyone was on your side and not his. So, without much of a warning, you dived into Lover's Lake.
The splash of the water had captured their attention, especially Steve’s and when he saw you were no longer in the boat. He cursed and looked over the edge and saw nothing but the darkness of the water.
“Dammit! I should’ve known she’d do that!” he said as he gripped the edge of the boat.
Why did you have to be so reckless sometimes? It seriously stresses Steve out, from you throwing him out of the way from that Demodog and getting smacked by it yourself despite it being your first encounter with one to you flirting with the guards at Starcourt and to now jumping into the lake to see if there’s a gate down there. One obviously was more dangerous than the others, but he wished you would just stop.
He was taking his shirt off now, obviously going to dive and swim down after you until someone's hand hit the back of his head just as he got the shirt off.
“Ow, hey-”
“Don’t be dumb, Steve!” Robin told him, “She’s going to be fine. Nance, how long can she hold her breath?”
Nancy answered, and it was more than a minute longer than Steve could, and it was obvious when he sighed.
“See, we’ll just time her and if she doesn’t come back up then you can valiantly dive in there and rescue her, maybe even give her mouth to mouth since you want to kiss her so bad-” Steve’s eyes widened slightly and he scrunched up his nose.
“Woah what? I never said-”
“Please, it’s obvious, so, so obvious that our new pal Eddie here thought you were together.”
Eddie looked at the both of them, "I thought you were like…an overprotective boyfriend or something with how hard you were trying to take her place.”
“Man, what do you know, you barely got here…”
“I’m just saying, man, I don’t think you would’ve fought that hard if it were one of us,” Eddie stated, making Steve scoff because he wouldn’t even hesitate to do the same with Robin and Nancy at least, but it was the fact that you could very well make this dive better than him was enough to prove to them at least that there was something more to it. And maybe a little to Steve too.
“Oh you don’t even know the half of it,” Robin said while Nancy half-smiled in amusement as she looked down at her watch, being sure to keep track of the amount of time you’re down there, “One time she flirted with a secret Russian guard, and lover boy here looked like he was going to explode-”
“What!” Steve’s cheeks were heating up at the mention of that, “We remember that very differently.”
Sure, he was a little annoyed but not because he thought you were trying to hook up with him, because it was risky. It didn’t matter if it kind of worked…and he was a bit jealous...not explosion jealous, but still in the spectrum of jealous.
“And the way they’re always around each other? We had no room on this boat and Steve insisted she come with…”
“Yeah, it is a little exhausting having to keep you two apart to be honest,” Nancy stated, “We could’ve used her at Pennhurst.”
“Hey, that is different, you guys are making it sound like I tell her what to do or something- first, I didn’t want her to be a babysitter again and second- she wanted to stay behind with me when you went to Pennhurst.”
“And I wonder why that was…” Robin hummed. Steve bit the inside of his cheek, not understanding was Robin was getting at, “You like her Steve, just admit it and things will feel better. I swear.”
Steve sighed, “Okay yeah, so I like her, but she isn't into me and I don't see why it's important right now-"
“Oh Steve, I thought you were a pro at this,” Robin said, and he shot her a little look as she grinned back, “I’m just saying, after all this is done, and your only problem is finding the ‘one’ maybe look at her, yeah?”
Steve swallowed a lump of spit, and laughed, “You’re just trying to mess with me so I'll ask her out and you can laugh when she says no.”
“Am I really that cruel?" Robin questioned, but was met with silence, she scoffed and continued to say, "Like I said, just look a little bit closer.”
Robin was finished speaking then, and Steve shook his head in disbelief before deciding to keep asking Nancy how much time had past.
✧ ✧ ✧
You hadn’t resurfaced yet, and the time you usually could hold your breath underwater was inching closer and closer by the second. Steve was getting nervous, eyes flickering all over the lake to see if you had maybe emerged elsewhere.
Already, he was moving to stand, “That’s it, it’s been too long, I’m going down there-”
“Steve-”
Suddenly, you were bursting out of the water with a loud gasp and splashing water all over everyone. Steve nearly fell over as it was where he was about to dive into. You looked up at him as your vision readjusted and saw him staring at you with relief.
And then he started to speak.
“Were you trying to beat your own record down there? Why did it take you so long? Were you sightseeing or something- I was about to swim down there and-”
“It’s there,” you interrupted him before he could blast more questions your way, “I saw it, Dustin’s right- there is a gate right beneath us.”
Steve went quiet, and the other three all shot shocked looks to one another and Robin quickly relayed the information Dustin on the walkie-talkie.
“It’s really down there?” Nancy asked more so in disbelief. You were nodding.
“Is it snack-sized, or like the one we saw at Starcourt?” Robin asked.
“Definitely not as big as that one was, but still pretty big,” you replied breathlessly as you began to climb up. It was Steve who was offering you his hand, and you ignored the fact that he was no longer wearing that yellow long-sleeved shirt that made you forget for a moment you were annoyed with him.
“That’s insane,” Steve was saying as your hands met. He was about to pull you up when he was suddenly jolting forward and nearly falling into the water. Your eyes had met each other, and it dawned on you that something was wrapped tightly around your ankle and pulled.
In one breath you said frantically, “SteveDon’tLetMeG-”
The rest of your sentence was drowned out by water as you were suddenly submerged once again, but this time it was very much against your will. Whatever that was coiled around your ankle was forcefully dragging you back down to the bottom of the lake.
Your hand had unfortunately slipped from Steve's grasp as you were pulled under, and he was calling your name. He didn't think twice, diving in after you while leaving Robin, Nancy and Eddie behind. In fact, Steve went after you so fast that for a moment they thought he was dragged down with you.
“What the hell was that, man! What the hell was that!” Eddie was shouting.
“What do we do?!” Robin shouted moreso at Nancy because she trusted her with decisions more than herself or Eddie. Nancy was already standing at the edge of the boat, ready to dive in after you and Steve.
It was hard not to panic as you were being dragged further and further from the surface. The water of the lake filled your lungs, and you desperately swung your arms upward in an attempt to swim back up, but it was to no avail.
As fast as you were underwater though, before you could possibly drown, you were suddenly gasping loudly and being dragged across rough terrain. You were shouting, water spilling from you lips.
Just seconds after you were pulled through the gate, Steve was coming through it too. His eyes frantically looked around for you until he heard your shouts. He called out to you, already beginning to run as fast as he could toward you.
You called out to him too, "Steve! Help!"
Your hands desperately tried to grab anything that could anchor you, but everything easily slipped from your grasp. It was only when you hit something particularly large the thing let go of you, and the sudden force of the stop caused you to roll a couple of times before you were burrowed in a bunch of sticky vines.
Steve called out your name again as he was by your side. You were too winded to comprehend what exactly had just happened, your eyes blinking rapidly at Steve and your new surroundings.
You were breathing heavily, gazing up at him with wide eyes as his hands grasped shoulders and making you face him. His eyes flickered all over you, making sure you were okay while asking you if you were hurt.
"I-I don't know, what- wait- where are we?" You said between pants as Steve eyes fell back onto yours. You were moving to stand, and Steve helped you.
After catching your breath with Steve’s arm wrapped firmly around you, you finally had taken in your surroundings. It was Lover’s Lake, yes but not your Lover’s Lake, and there were the same dust-like particles floating all around you.
The terrain was covered with the vines, and the sky was permanently cloudy. What really had you staring in awe was the flashes of red in the distance that came with cracks of loud lightning and thunder.
“Steve…are we?”
You looked at him now, and he was staring at the sky too, “Uh yeah…yeah I’m pretty sure.”
You were in the Upside Down.
✧ ✧ ✧
Steve was mad at you, though you couldn't really understand why. Because after he killed that bat-like creature that once had you by the throat by slamming its body repeatedly on the ground, he wasn't mad then, at least at you.
But, now he was and you thought maybe it had something to do with your newly sprained ankle that you were struggling to walk on. You knew the thing that had dragged you all the way down here was to blame for that.
After being dragged into this god forsaken place, these bat creatures had surrounded attacked the both of you. You were so high on adrenaline that you hadn’t even realized you could barely even walk on your ankle until you were able to catch your breath under Skull Rock.
"You shouldn't have dived down here," Steve said with a shake of his head, "It should've been me putting myself in danger. Not you."
You were leaning against Steve, who insisted despite his own injuries that he'd be the one to help you walk on your faulty ankle.
You rolled your eyes, "Again, it doesn't matter! We're all down here now, trapped and with no way of defending ourselves yet. The only way it changes is you being the one dragged and us coming after you."
"You went before we even properly decided who's going to go, at least you wouldn't be hurt or almost strangled to death-"
You huffed and began to try and move away from him, "You know what, I think I'd rather walk by myself."
Steve scoffed at the idea of that, "I'd hand you to Robin before letting you do that."
For some reason, this made you finally snap.
"Steve, seriously, what the hell is your problem? Why do you always treat me like I'm a kid who’s less than capable of doing literally anything? You treat me worse than you treat Dustin, an actual kid," you claimed in an irritated tone.
Steve seemed taken back by your words, stopping the both of you from walking (you limping) any further.
"Woah hey, I don't treat you like a kid-"
"Yeah well it sure feels like it," you interrupted with a deep frown now, "I just don't get it, do you not trust me or something? Is it because I'm a girl? Because you don't treat Nancy like that, or Robin-"
"What? No! It's not because of that, also I thought I made it pretty clear that I do trust you!" Steve argued back to you. You laughed in his face.
"Pretty clear? We wouldn't be having this lovely conversation if it was 'pretty clear' like you claim," you mocked slightly, Steve frowned too then.
"Well...yeah, I thought it was pretty clear how much I trust you and how much I..." he suddenly paused in his sentence, before sucking in a breath and saying, "...care about you, enough to not want you throwing yourself into danger and getting hurt," he explained, you pressed her lips together as you stared at him, "Seriously, you do it all the time-"
"For the same reason you throw yourself into danger all the time!" You exclaimed, this time loud enough for the other three to hear your back and forth, "I care about you too, maybe more than you actually know, so do you think it doesn't...affect me when you throw yourself into these situations too?"
Your voice was shaking slightly as you recalled him getting into a fight with Hargrove when he tried to attack Lucas, or when he was tortured and drugged up by those Russian soldiers. And how, more recently, you had to listen to his shouts of pain of the bats biting and chewing on his sides, being reminded of how helpless you felt.
Steve paused then, and furrowed his eyebrows.
"It does?"
"Yes Steve, it does because you're my friend. In fact, it terrifies me, Steve, when you do that because I'm also absolutely in love with you," You rambled on, "But I still trust you, you know? I trust that you know what you're doing and you'll just be okay. And I really, really wish you'd do the same for me."
Any words Steve was going to say had been wiped from his mind as he took in what you had just said. It seemed that you hadn't even realized what you said as you stared up at him with your eyebrows taunt and eyes meeting his directly.
'I'm also absolutely in love with you'
Steve's breath hitched gently, wondering if he actually hadn't of heard that and he was delirious from the blood loss.
"Shit, seems like he doesn't have to look closer," Robin muttered to both Nancy and Eddie who watched with raised brows that you'd just admitted that out loud.
"Uh hey, I don't think we have time for this-" Nancy called over to you too but was promptly interrupted by the ground beginning to aggressively shake beneath all of you.
Deep rumbles echoed from all around you as the tremors caused you to fall forward onto Steve. He caught you, but ended up falling backwards and hitting the floor with a thud.
You landed right on top of him with a short yelp, hands clenching the denim jacket Eddie let Steve borrow and your face pressed into his bare chest.
Despite the circumstances, Steve couldn't let go of your confession that he was now sure he actually heard you loud and clear. You were in love with him? Did everyone see it but him? You just had always seem to be this untouchable girl to him, even before you became friends, like you were there but never within reach.
When the floor had finally stopped shaking, you looked up to look at him with wide eyes that probably realized you'd just confessed your secret love for him. You looked ashamed, embarrassed even, and he could tell you were already thinking about ways to change what you had just told him before.
Steve realized in this moment you were always within reach, but just like Robin had said...he wasn't looking at you and just assumed you weren't interested when you very much were.
He prided himself in being able to capture the signs someone is into him, even called himself a pro, but clearly that title is wrong if he couldn't even tell if the girl he was in love with as well for almost a year returned his feelings.
"Steve I didn't-"
"It scares me too for the same reason," he suddenly told you. It took you a moment to process what he was getting at, "For the exact same reason."
You tilted your head, about to ask him if he knew what he was saying, but it was cut short by his lips meeting yours. It was a short kiss, but one that took your breath away in the few seconds your lips were touching.
“Are these two serious?” Eddie asked out loud.
“Oh yeah they are. This is not the time!” Nancy called from her spot, but her words fell on deaf ears as you and Steve kissed. Robin scoffed out loud and began to make her way toward her friends who were (finally) in a lip lock.
“Hey! I’m happy for you two to realize you have soft and fuzzy feelings for each other! I really am! But does it have to be right now!?”
Neither of you listened as you kissed, too engrossed with each other and the fact that these feelings you’ve both had for a year were reciprocated. It didn’t matter, at the moment, that you were in the Upside Down and would always remember your first kiss being here of all places.
You kissed him harder, pushing down onto him the way you always dreamed of kissing him and he returned with the same energy.
The kiss was brought abruptly to an end though when someone was grabbing you and making you stand. You blinked a few times in your stupor and saw that it was Robin.
“Like I said, I’m happy for you, but we seriously have to keep moving,” she told you. You looked back at Steve who was being helped up by Eddie. His eyes found yours, and so did a winning smile on his lips.
You laughed softly, still in a bit of a shock of what had just happened. Your fingers went to your lips that still felt tingly from his lips that were on yours.
“I better not wake up in my bed and realize this was just a dream,” you suddenly said to Robin.
She wrapped an arm around you, determined to be the one to help you walk now and replied, “Nope. This is real, we’re trapped in another dimension, and you just kissed Steve Harrington.”
You leaned against Robin now, a laugh escaping your lips.
Meanwhile, Steve was standing on his own, and gently placed a hand over his lips like you had, still feeling like he could feel your lips there and tasting you.
Eddie had cleared his throat, "Now you're really an overprotective boyfriend."
Steve coughed into his hand now as if to hide the fact he was touching his own lips, and stood up more straight. His eyes had found yours again, catching the smile on your lips as Robin helped you turn around and he grinned to himself as well.
He couldn't wait to kiss you again, preferably in your own world and on one of your first dates.

I have this Steve thought that he will take his love’s day planner and write things for her to do which could range from silly to steamy like “tell robin her music taste sucks, visit boyfriend at work, makeout with boyfriend in his car, etc” knowing it’ll make her smile and she’ll do some of them.
omg.... anon...... i'm in love with this!!! it's so unique!!!!
the first time it happened, it took you a while to even notice the glittery blue ink that filled the lined boxes of your planner. the entire next week was filled with a handwriting that certainly was not yours, but it was easy to detect the culprit; you could sniff out anything that your boyfriend got into in no time, always having this gut feeling when something had to do with him. as you read what was written all across the next seven boxes, your suspicions were correct.
"monday, 8am: make fun of robin's AWFUL music taste at FV shift." you rolled your eyes as you read that; steve had insisted that robin's preferred tunes were absolutely horrid lately. even more so since she had been gushing about wanting a new album from one of her favorite artists. (to be fair, you're not sure why steve feels as though his music taste is any better. you know all about his love for the most cheesy, classic love songs, despite how much he'll protest if you out him). in retaliation you write "remind steve of his own AWFUL music taste" underneath his handwriting. even if he would never get to see it, the action brought a playful grin to your face.
"tuesday, 1pm: bring loving boyfriend his favorite lunch." you knew exactly what said favorite lunch was; a bacon cheeseburger, large dr. pepper, and medium size pack of fries from a local fast food chain a few blocks away from family video. his lunch breaks were usually quite short, and a singular trip to the place had him completely obsessed with it. convenient and delicious, it was forever deemed by him as his utter favorite. between this request and monday's, you think this one is much more doable. sweet even, had steve not cheekily written it down for you in your own planner.
"wednesday, 6pm: drive the kids to hellfire meeting at eddie's." this was something you both had actually talked about. a pack of young teenagers had squirmed their ways into both your and steve's hearts (but primarily steve's). dustin had begged him to drive them to their next club meeting, and when it seemed as though steve was relentless in denying his position as their driver, he promised that steve could have an entire two weeks off from driving him anywhere. steve caved, and you already knew that dustin would break his promise, begging to be taken to the arcade or over to mike's house, and steve would complain about it but end up grinning in the end anyway. each and every one of the kids had steve wrapped around their fingers.
"thursday, 5pm: diner date with handsome boyfriend." another thing upon the list that was doable, but not discussed yet. for a moment, you wondered whether steve would formally ask you about it or if he would give you a cocky grin as he asked if you happened to have sudden plans on thursday. you opted for the latter; you knew steve well enough to almost see the mischievous glint in his eyes.
"friday, 10am: meet the best boyfriend ever in the inventory room. ;)" you nearly laughed out loud when you saw the poorly drawn winky face at the end of steve's sentence; god, he was such a complete dork. a very adorable dork, your dork even, but a dork nonetheless. whether you would complete that one or not was up to whether you felt like being generous or not. regardless, if you "accidentally" stumbled into the back room with your coworker at 10am sharp, that would simply be an odd coincidence. totally.
"saturday, 8pm: sleepover with the kids at steve's!" you noted that this was the only time steve had referred to himself with his actual name and not an amazing adjective followed by 'boyfriend,' and the seven little hearts drawn around his name, colored in with pink gel pen, explained themselves.
"sunday, 11pm: weekly night drive to skull rock. ;)" steve harrington's winky faces were going to be the death of you, you swore it. plus, did you really go to skull rock weekly? sure, a few times every now and then, but never weekly. unless your beloved boyfriend was trying to make some kind of statement, or perhaps was proposing that it should become weekly.
following through with some of his requests and completely disregarding others, the week passed on, and steve was over again. when he left, your planner was once more filled with little notes and even some doodles from your boyfriend. as time passes on, it becomes a tradition between the two of you. he comes home with you every sunday after your encounter at skull rock and somehow finds the time when you aren't in the room to fill your weekly routine. he's more bold as time goes on, becoming more flirtatious and suggestive in his daily notes, but he's also becoming more playful, writing more and more ridiculous things down for you, until it's been months later and you're looking back fondly over your finished planner, the messy handwriting of steve harrington's love for you strew throughout the pages.
for christmas, you buy steve his own planner, a smirk on your face that only says one thing: your turn.

Lost & Found
Slight Steve Harrington/Reader
Summary - You're F/N Henderson, or N/N for short. Your rabbit goes missing. Steve and the Original Party(tm) help you find her.
“Dustin! Where's Pepper?” you call through the house, looking for your pet bunny.
“I-I have no idea where she is, N/N.”
You run your hair through your unruly curls, annoyed that your brother has no idea where your beloved rabbit is. “I can't go out until I know she's safe, Dusty. Especially after Mews disappeared a few months ago. I don't want that to happen to my baby.”
Dustin walks up to you and pats your shoulder lightly. “I'll help you look for her until Steve gets here, okay?”
“You and Harrington are getting awfully chummy, huh, Dusty?”
Your brother nods, his curls bouncing. “He's really badass--”
“Language, Dusty.”
“--Sorry. He's really cool. I used to think he was a jerk, but he's actually really nice.”
“Well, maybe Mr. Nice Guy can help find Pepper when he gets here.”
“But we were gonna play DnD here with the guys.”
“Steve Harrington plays DnD, Dustin? Seriously? You know we don't lie in this house.”
Dustin's voice gets a whiny tone to it. “ He's not gonna play. Steve's just babysitting, because you and Mom are out tonight. Or at least you're supposed to be.”
“What kind of eighth grader needs a babysitter, Dustin?”
“Look, Steve's my friend, okay?”
You sigh. Ever since your dad passed away, Dustin has had a sincere lack of any real male figure in his life. For a while, now, he has leaned on his science teacher a bit much. Maybe Steve Harrington is a good alternative.
“Yeah, okay. Maybe I'll stay in tonight.”
“Oh my God, don't threaten me like that, N/N!”
Your face falls. “I wasn't threatening. I thought it might be fun. You used to want me to play Dungeons and Dragons with you guys.”
“But you're gonna make me look so uncool in front of Steve!”
“What's uncool about me?!”
“Have you seen the way you dress, N/N? You dress like you just stepped out of 1975. It's 1985, and you're a high school senior. Not a mom!”
“Wow, okay. Hurtful.” You're only slightly joking. His words had hit a little bit harshly. Are you really that uncool?
“I-I'm sorry, N/N. I didn't mean that. I'm just...you're you, and Steve is Steve. He's a really cool friend to have, and I really don't want to lose him for any reason, you know?”
“Fine, whatever. As soon as I find Pepper, I'll be out of your hair, okay Dusty? Then you won't have to worry about me embarrassing you.” You stick your tongue out at your baby brother (you can't call him your little brother, anymore, because he shot up by nearly a foot during Christmas break!).
“Just in case he shows up, can you, like, put your hair up or something?”
“Why, what's wrong with my hair?” you ask, a tone of warning laced through your voice.
“Nothing...I just think you look really pretty when your hair is up, with some of your curls around your face.”
A grin lights up your face at your brother's sweet words. “You're such a little charmer. You're gonna be a heartbreaker, Dustin Allen* Henderson, you know that?”
Ruining the sweet moment, your brother does his infamous growl. “Dammit, Dusty. I take it back. You need to quit that shit. Anyway, can you go look under the couches and stuff while I put up my hair?”
Your brother nods, so you head off to the bathroom you share with your mother and sit down at your shared vanity. Maybe you can even wear a little bit of makeup. Actually...you know what? If your brother is so convinced you dress for the wrong decade, you're going to prove him wrong, dammit.
After you've brushed your hair into a quick ponytail, carefully leaving some curls around your face, as Dustin suggested, you run to your bedroom and pick out the trendiest clothes you own. They just so happen to be overalls that you choose to pair with a thin, brown belt, and a nicely fitting white crop top. Scrunching your face, you also elect to wear some bright pink hoops, because, God dammit, you are a trendy 18 year old young lady, not a mom .
Bringing the clothes to your bathroom, you quickly change into them and put on some light makeup. You double-check your hair and makeup, making sure your appearance works well.
“N/N! Where are you? The guys and Steve are here! You can leave.”
You roll your eyes and head to the living room. “Thing is, dipshit, I can't leave without knowing where Pepper is. Have you found her, yet?” When you walk into the living room, you're met with stunned silence and wide eyes from all the males in the room.
“What the hell are you wearing, F/N?” It's rare that your brother uses your actual name, so he must really be shocked.
“Well, you told me that I dress like a loser, so I decided to actually dress up for once.”
“Aren't you just going to the library to study?”
You shrug. “Who says I can't dress up to go study, shitbag? Hey, guys. No girls tonight?”
Mike shakes his head. “Jane is... studying with Hopper, and Max got grounded for getting detention.”
“Um, you could...study here, keep me company while these losers play Dragons and Dungeons,” says the Steve Harrington, looking at you with an indecipherable expression.
“Dustin said I'm not cool enough for you guys, though,” you say, sticking your tongue out teasingly at your brother.
“Oh my God, N/N, this is why!” Your brother's face is turning bright red, and you can't help but laugh at him. However, you're quickly brought back to reality.
“Actually, I can't do anything until I find my rabbit. Boys, have you seen Pepper?”
The kids respond with a chorus of nos and shaking heads. You sigh, feeling deflated. What if she got crushed under a piece of furniture, or something? You knew you should have replaced her cage, instead of letting her get away with a loose cage door.
Steve looks up, suddenly. “What does, uh, Pepper look like?”
“She's white, with brown patches. Floppy ears. 'Bout this big.” You hold your hand out a few inches.
“Oh shit! Yeah I saw a rabbit like that!”
“Seriously? You're a lifesaver, Steve! Where did you see her?”
“She was hopping around in your front yard. Um...she ran away when I drove up, though.”
You bite your lip, trying to hold back tears. “Domestic rabbits can't survive in the wild. I've gotta go find her!”
Without waiting for a response from anyone, you slip your sneakers on and grab your coat, bracing for the early February weather. Luckily, there hasn't been much snow, so you don't have to worry about your baby being camouflaged by it.
Clicking your tongue in a sound you know she'll recognize, you begin slowly traversing your front yard. Come on, Pepper , you think. Where are you?
“Want some help?” someone suddenly asks you, tapping on your shoulder lightly.
You turn around, only to see four boys staring at you sheepishly, Steve standing behind them, looking almost...smug. If you were to hazard a guess, you would be willing to bet your limited money from working at Burger Bob's that Steve Harrington had put them up to this.
“Yeah, I'd like that. Thank you, guys. You remember what she looks like?” Your brother's friends nod in unison, wandering off.
After a moment, you turn to your classmate. “Thank you for putting them up to this. I'm not sure how you managed to pull them away from DnD, but I appreciate it, Steve.”
The boy flushes – whether from the cold or your words, you can't be sure – as he runs a hand through his absolutely perfect hair. “Don't mention it. You looked really sad, F/N – “
“N/N,” you say gently, correcting him.
He coughs quietly. “N/N. Anyway, I just wanted to be able to help, and I can't leave those kids unsupervised. Mrs. Byers would kick my ass.”
You nod. “Yeah, she's super overprotective of Will, these days. Thanks again, Steve. I'm gonna go keep looking.”
“Sure. I will, too.” He smiles gently down at you.
Twenty minutes later, Steve comes running up to you, a squirming bundle in his arms. You run to meet him, taking the rabbit out of his arms, tears springing to your eyes.
“Oh...Oh my goodness. Steve. Where'd you find her?” Before you can answer, you whisper comforting words to your rabbit. A moment later, you look up to see his bewildered face. “Steve Harrington, I could kiss you right now. You just saved my rabbit's life. You're literally my favorite person in the world, right now.”

Finally catching perv!steve, you spot him looking when you bend down to get something and catch sight of the bulge that's nearly bursting the zipper of his jeans
Making him watch while you touch yourself, calling him names, telling him he's a pathetic pervert and he'll never have you, telling him you know how much he likes to watch and how disgusted it makes you
Steve's cock aching because you won't let him touch himself, and because somehow the only thing hotter than you fucking his brains out is being made to watch because he's not worthy of you
Anyway uh.... sorry if I got a bit carried away there 😅 your story gave me a lot of Thoughts(tm)
Really hope you keep writing the way you write Steve is so good and I am obsessed🥰
he's such a pitiful little thing :(( he doesn't mean to get so riled up, he really can't help it but you're just so beautiful.
now look at him. you'd been messing with him for the last few hours. making him sit on his hands while you toy with him. the agreement was simple, if he wanted to make it up to you he had to keep his hands to himself. but what he didn't expect was to be tormented for what felt like fucking centuries. though he loved every lasting bit of it. it started off simple, you licking over the mushroomy tip of his cock through his jeans. telling him that he should be so ashamed of himself for being so desperate. honestly, he probably would've cum from just that if you didn't pull away when you did.
poor steve found begging you to let him make it up to you some other way. he doesn't even care about summing, he just wants to feel you. please, please, just let him touch you.
" perverts don't get what they want. " you remind him, pouting mockingly. he really didn't mean to be so vulgar, you just looked so pretty in your new outfit. it wasn't on purpose. he's a gentleman, remember, a good boy.
you watch him squirm as you sit back, hiking up the very skirt that started this mess to begin with. you were sitting in a chair, opposite of him. legs parted to reveal your puffy cunt that seemed to be covered by nothing. the image making his head drop back, licking at his lips. he'd never wanted to touch someone so bad in his fucking life.
"you're being mean." he mewls, fingers gripping the seat of his chair.
"oh?" you ponder, hands ducking down to part your sticky folds. spreading them far enough for him to see the gape of your greedy hole, clenching it around nothing. "and whose fault is that? only one of us is a disgusting creep who can't keep his cock under control."
the way his cock twitches, pre spurting out of his spongey red tip at your harsh words fills you with amusement. who knew steve harrington was such desperate little pervert? his hips rutt upwards, thighs trembling helplessly. words cannot begin to describe how much he's been yearning for this. all the times spent fucking his hand in your driveway. the countless trips to the bathroom to jerk off leaving the door cracked justttt a smidge hoping you'd somehow catch him red-handed. he wanted to be found out, he wanted his unrelenting yearning for you to be discovered so that hopefully one day you'll let him fuck you raw. all that led to today and poor steve could not be more pleased with the outcome. the sheer sight of your fingers working around you greedy cunt, the sticky sounds, the slick that's coating your beautiful little fingers. god he's basically drooling.

okay so, yesterday I found your spn meta by chance and fell in love with them 'cause more than writing they're like images, like they really depict things and I just immediately understand what you mean instantly + I started to rewatch Steve Yockey's episodes 'cause I feel like I like his writing (lots of queer! lots of rom-com references! but it's all done so intellingently, I love it!) but ALSO sometimes it doesn't translate to me + I just saw you wrote about "Optimism"= I GOTTA ASK: what's your take on "Optimism"? I don't understand what the Zombie story and the Musca one should reveal about the characters. Visually, it looks like the Musca = Charlie, so Harper and the zombie are ??? I'm mad at myself 'cause I don't seem to get what the show is telling me so I'm hoping you can share what the show tells YOU and, vicariously, I can get it as well (lol). THANK YOU!
Hi! Hello!
Oh, really? That's so cool. I still have trouble thinking of myself as a "meta writer." I don't mean to be. I just like to ramble. But cool! It's probably mostly that we think alike and are sympatico in some key ways. :-) Always fun to find kindred spirits!
///
O P T I M I S M
I have so many thoughts on Optimism. It's one of my fave episodes! I actually did a re-watch-slash-convo with some friends on Discord and just transcribed the very, very, very LOOONG bulk of it today!
I haven't written much on the Musca. After spending a lot of time of @scoobydoodean's blog, I've just about decided the Musca plot is actually a Sam's emotions-through line more than it is a true dark mirror. Even AU Charlie is cheeky about it:
AU CHARLIE (annoyed at Sam, about the Musca): Your nifty metaphor has holes.
Basically, Charlie is saying that mirrors aren't one-to-one, and that trying to force-fit them into being one-to-one can be super annoying sometimes.
//
CHARLIE - Every two hundred years there is "bad egg". When a male fails to find a mate, he abandons his community and starts using peoples bodies to "nest". Binding them together with a viscous goo. And when the goo fits...
//
The Musca/fly is at face-value:
A) A bodysnatcher plot: In that regard, it could be like all angels, demons, or anyone inhabiting a body. (Cas, Lucifer, Michael, Crowley, etc.) Ergo, it's a dark, uncharitable Cas mirror the way Dave Mathers outlaw wraith was in Tombstone. It could be saying that Cas "failed" among "his own people" and cruelly took up space in a human body. But that would be grossly oversimplifying the whole situation, saying that Cas "should have stayed with his people," which ofc doesn't work.
It, as Charlie says, "has a lot of holes." @ilarual has written a lot about the totalitarian structure of Heaven. And Sam himself wants Cas around. As far as metaphors go, it's a dud for Cas.
B) It's a failure to thrive plot: Because the Musca "failed" in The Real World with its Own People, perhaps failed to live up to The prescriptive Dream of Success (TM), now it's wreaking havoc on others.
Sam himself "failed out" of Harvard. He "choked." Kevin Train and Patience Turner are also Failed Gifted Students. Losers who didn't live up to their potential. This could even apply to Chuck, binding together his characters because he's a Loser with a capital L.
///
ANYWAY, I feel like the Music plot is a "red herring" for a few reasons.
One: The main Harper plot is about breaking narratives, about not relying so much on books. And then Charlie says this:
CHARLIE: Goo. So, yeah. I'd say this is the right place. Now, I'm just trying to figure out what we are dealing with. Thus, books.
Aside: Later Cas says sarcastically in Ouroboros that Sam and Rowena, "Have many, many books."
So, there's this niggling indictment of trying to find too much truth in books...
///
Two: Sam has a tendency to see something and, like, imprint on it. He tends to fall into "It's just like me!" instead of speaking frankly about the present situations and emotions.
*In American Nightmare, he sees Madga Peterson, an abused child* -> "She's just like me!"
*In Somewhere in Between Heaven and Hell, he sees someone lying about something completely unrelated to his current situation* ->"Omg, they're lying to them, like I'm lying to Dean! It's just like me!"
*In Lost & Found, he meets Jack Kline, who is Lucifer's son "OMG, he's just like me!" -> *spoiler alert* Jack is not in fact much like Sam at all. -> Sidenote: instead of speaking frankly about how Dean is grieving, how Lucifer killed Cas and likely killed Mary, he uses complex euphemisms with Jack, ones that actually obscure the reality of the situation! This winds up annoying Jack and making him pull away from Sam.
///
IMHO...Sam isn't...naturally all that great with emotions.
He tries really, really hard, and he loves patterns, but he's always seeming to force-fit situations and scenarios into neat little boxes so he can passively-aggressively use it to indirectly communicate something he feels about himself.
He has a very cognitive empathy style. Bless him.
///
So what's REALLY going on here?
Well. In this episode, he wants Charlie to stay. He wants Charlie to stay and fill a void the other Charlie left behind. He wants Charlie to stay really, really badly. And he beats around the bush about it.
At first, he sidesteps his own emotions by passive-aggressively implying that it's Dean that in fact needs her.
CHARLIE: He'll be fine. Your brother, I mean. He's got other friends, right? SAM: Plenty. Uhm, he used to have a pretty damn good wingman. CHARLIE: So call that guy to check on him. SAM: That guy was you. CHARLIE: No, it wasn't. SAM: Right, I, uh, sorry. I didn't mean that.
And then by trying to make the case fit her.
He's very indirect and weird about it. Because he's Sam. (It's a contrast to the effortless, awkward-but-honest communication style we see from characters like Jack and Dean in this very episode.)
SAM: Charlie, you can't just quit and go live on a mountain somewhere. People need people. CHARLIE: Why? Cause they're the luckiest people in the world? SAM: Look, come on. We just do. We're social animals. CHARLIE: Emphasis on animals. SAM: Yeah, but you're also a hunter. The things that we've seen, it's not so easy to just walk away from it all. Believe me, I've tried. Our Charlie tried. CHARLIE: Yeah, well again, she ain't me. It's my life, Sam. Not hers. And not yours.
Ah, yes. Instead of saying, “I want you here,” it’s, “people need people.”
And Hell, sometimes indirect communication works! Like how Dean and Cas use Felix the snake to indirectly communicate with Jack in Peace of Mind!
But the difference with Sam is...he's not using this indirect communication style to find out how Charlie feels (the way Dean and Cas use the snake to suss out how Jack feels).
No, he's using the whole thing to try to tell Charlie what he thinks is best for her! To tell her things, not find out things.
Eventually, he breaks and says what he actually thinks, but only after AU Charlie is starting to lose her patience with him:
SAM (faux-sadly): Got to say, I do feel kind of bad for the Musca. I mean, he could have been happy if he'd stayed with his people. Didn't have to go off on his own just because... CHARLIE (exasperated): Okay, I get it. I am just like the bug and I shouldn't go out on my own.
OMG, Sammy! It's okay if we want to hit Sam sometimes, right? I too wanted to hit him after he said this to Charlie.
CHALIE: But your nifty metaphor has holes. I wasn't looking for love. I found it and I lost it. And I didn't kill people and literally nest in their body parts so...(Scene cuts to other Musca removing the body of the dead one) SAM: Okay, yeah I know, I know, How about this? Don't leave.
(Aside// I think this is a cheeky nod to the fact that Cas and Dean weren't looking for love either. In fact, they tried (and keep trying) really, really hard not to love each other. Their real life was faaaar more complicated than some simple "bodysnatcher plot.")
But thank God--Sam finally says outright what he needed to say to Charlie: Don't leave.
Now, it probably would've been better if he's gone a step further: "I don't want you to leave," but for Sam, this is pretty good progress.
SAM: Hear me out. Sure some people can do bad things when they're desperate or scared. But the guy we just saved, he has a wife and children. I'm not saying that all people are good people or even that most people are but if we help people then maybe they'll help people and all that. And that's worth it. Even with all the tears and death. It's worth it. CHARLIE: Just to be super clear, I am not like the fly monster. (Sam chuckles) But, I'll think about staying.
So I think OVERALL the Musca plot is really about highlighting Sam's difficult communication style, and I think it's intentionally being cheeky about it how it's using a "really "dumb metaphor" with gaping holes!
It's about how Sam tries to force-fit the case of the week into saying what he wants it to say...instead of just saying it.
///
I think Sam has a little bit of a "mental main character syndrome." He sees a scenario and moves directly into cognitive empathy, reading the situation and thinking:
How can I apply this to myself? Or make it a stand-in for either something I want to believe about myself or a stand-in for something I want to say indirectly?
Sometimes you'll see ppl insist that Sam is the "MC" because every storyline tells you "something about Sam." But I'm more in the camp that it's Sam's inherent cognitive style of empathy at work, desperately reworking anything and everything to make it apply to himself.
Whereas Cas and Dean (and Jack) have a truer emotional style of empathy, connecting with people for who they actually are, as they are.
That's not to say that both styles can't be manipulative when we want them to be. But Sam really struggles with his style in a way I feel like Dean and Cas do not. Dean and Cas perhaps don't even realize what effective communicators they actually are!

Eddie got to the bar before Chrissy did, but he kind of preferred it that way. It gave him a chance to sit down, order a drink, and settle into the environment before being thrust into more chaos.
Sometimes, even though he thrived in insanity, he needed a moment to breathe. Not that he’d ever admit that out loud, of course.
“Hey, stranger!” Chrissy’s voice rang from behind him. He spun around and was surprised when she threw her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. He’d thought that she’d been extra sweet and friendly the night before because of the alcohol, but apparently that was just her vibe. It was actually really nice.
“H-hi, Chrissy,” Eddie replied, hugging her back. She pulled away after one last squeeze, then plopped herself beside him. “How’s it going?”
“Pretty good,” she answered. “I was up all night, so I slept most of the day. Now, I’ll probably be up all night again. Such is life.”
“Been there,” Eddie replied, taking a sip of his drink.
“Can I get a vodka soda and two shots of tequila, please?” Chrissy asked the bartender.
“Tequila?” Eddie asked, attempting to hide the disgust on his face. He hadn’t touched the stuff in years, after one fateful night involving a playground. Helpful tip - being drunk on a swing set is not the move.
“Tequila,” Chrissy confirmed with a smirk. “I’m invested now, and considering this is our first of potentially many drinks together, I figured we should start off with a bang.”
Eddie stared at her, blankly. She wanted to see him again after this? But he hadn’t even really done anything!
“Why are you so invested in this?” Eddie asked.
“I dunno,” Chrissy replied with a shrug. The bartender put the vodka soda down in front of her, and she started mixing it around with the thin plastic straw. “I guess I’m just kinda…bored?”
“Bored?” Eddie repeated. “How could you be bored when you’re doing all the shit you do? Going to parties and photoshoots and - I mean, you barely know me.”
“My life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be,” she responded. There was a flicker of sadness in her eyes, but it left as quickly as it had come. Chrissy sipped her drink, then thanked the bartender as she set the shots down. “Come on, let’s commemorate this!”
She took out her phone and gestured for Eddie to hold his drink up so they could take a picture. He was blown away by the whole thing, honestly. He almost texted Carla just to be like - can you believe this shit?
It all seemed too easy. She was too open to being his friend, and he didn’t know why. He’d worked hard and all that, but he didn’t feel like he was decent enough of a person to get any sort of karmic reward. So this all felt a little suspicious, but he tried to enjoy it anyway.
They did the shot. At least Chrissy had sprung for the high-quality liquor. It was still kinda nasty.
“How was the rest of the party?” he asked.
“Good,” Chrissy responded with a tight-lipped smile. She didn’t add any details, which was odd, but she spoke again before Eddie could ask any follow-up questions. “So, what’s the deal with you? People say you’re dating Steve, but you didn’t even know what he looked like last night, soooo…”
Alright, here we go.
“Yeah, well,” Eddie began. “I’m not dating him, clearly.” No sense in lying to Chrissy when she already knew.
“But you want to?” Chrissy asked. Eddie shrugged. He would have flat out told her the truth, but he was hesitant to give everything away immediately. Steve was the one with the power, and Eddie hated that. “Do I need to order us another shot?”
“Please, no,” Eddie shot back instantly. When Chrissy laughed, he realized she’d been joking. “Sorry, it’s just -”
“It’s okay,” Chrissy assured him. “Talking to people in this business is hard. You never know who you can trust. I used to be a lot more open, and then you kinda just learn that you…can’t be, most of the time.”
Eddie furrowed his brow, wondering what exactly Chrissy felt she couldn’t tell people. Even moreso, he wanted to know who had broken her trust in the past. Then, he felt a pang of guilt, since he’d been mostly excited about this drink because it would boost his fame. Everything about all of this was corrupt and morally ambiguous. He sighed.
“I’m just trying to make it out there,” Eddie admitted. “And I - I mean, I don’t know what to do, or how anything works.”
“Yeah, I remember what that’s like,” she empathized. She took a sip of her vodka soda, then turned back to Eddie. “Do you ever feel like -? I mean, do you ever feel like you’re losing your mind?”
“Uhhh, just on a daily basis,” Eddie replied. He and Chrissy smiled at each other, and he could feel her authenticity. Maybe it was stupid for him to open up to her, but he was going to do it anyway. “Chrissy, have you ever, uh - like, have you ever done one of those PR relationships?”
“Oh, yeah,” she replied, unfazed. “I can’t really say anything, but yeah. It happens a lot around here.” Eddie nodded, then sipped his drink. “Wait, are you trying to do that with me?”
“Not quite,” Eddie mumbled, his lips pressed to his glass.
“I thought you were gay,” she continued.
“I am.”
“Oh, okay.” She thought about it for a moment, then her eyes widened. “Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Oh,” she repeated. “Ohhhh!”
“Got any other letters?” Eddie teased. Chrissy giggled, then shoved him playfully.
“You’re funny,” she said. Eddie wasn’t used to people enjoying his often wicked sense of humor. This was refreshing. “So, who’s idea was it?”
“My manager, I guess,” Eddie answered. “Well, she told me to use what the fans were saying and to meet up with the guy. But it, uh - it didn’t go well.”
“No?” she asked, surprised. “What happened?”
Eddie wanted to keep talking to Chrissy. He didn’t care that she was famous anymore - he wanted her perspective as someone who’d been through it. He also knew that Chrissy could tear him down just as quickly as she could build him up.
“Did you mean what you said about us getting drinks more often?” he asked.
“Yeah!” she replied, smiling brightly. “Like I said, you’re funny. And I - hmm. Okay, um. This next part might sound really bad at first, but I can explain.”
“Okay…” Eddie said, feeling his walls come back up.
“I don’t really have a lot of male friends,” Chrissy admitted. “It always feels like - like they’re just waiting for their chance to strike.”
“Like, try to sleep with you?” Eddie asked. Chrissy nodded. “Oh. Christ, that sucks.”
“Yeah,” she replied with a half shrug.
He skipped the part where he doubted whether or not what she was saying was true, because it was clearly affecting her whether it was true or not. Eddie also had an urge to diffuse the tension with a joke, because that was kind of his thing.
“Chrissy Cunningham,” he stated, “- are you trying to make me your gay best friend?” She bit her lip, fighting a guilty smile. “Cuz like, I’m down, but I’ve never really done this before so I don’t know what the role entails.” She stopped fighting the smile, so Eddie continued. “I mean, is there a rulebook out there? I think there’s a movie about this on Netflix. Should I watch that first?”
“Eddie!” She interrupted, fully laughing now. Eddie joined her, feeling accomplished that he’d lightened the mood and set her at ease again. “I’m in the modeling industry, I’m surrounded by gay men all the time. It’s not just about that, I promise.”
“Okay, then what is it?” Eddie wondered. She sighed, her body much more relaxed than it had been before.
“It’s just that everybody I’m around talks about their looks all the time. I mean, it’s our job to be beautiful, I know that, but it’s tiring to just constantly hear about new diets and calories and what I should and should not eat. It’s just - it’s nice to get away from that, sometimes. You’re nothing like them, and I like that.”
“Nothing like them, huh?” Eddie smirked. “Are you saying I’m not beautiful?” She laughed and shook her head.
“Okay fine, you have one thing in common,” she teased back. “You’re not mad?”
“Nah,” Eddie said, shaking his head. “But while we’re coming clean, I definitely was excited to come here because I hoped I’d get more followers if we hung out.”
“Well, obviously,” Chrissy responded, flipping her hair. “Okay, so that’s out of the way. Can we stick together, then?”
She asked it so sweetly it made his heart ache.
“Yeah, ‘course,” he replied. He thought back to what Chrissy had said earlier about her model friends and decided to commit to being the opposite. “So, uh, I dunno about you but I could really go for some fries right now.”
Chrissy’s eyes widened.
“I’d kill for some fries right now.”
“Great,” he said, grinning. “Who are we killing?” They laughed together, and then he got the bartender’s attention so he could order.
-
“For the record, I’m not doing this for you.”
It took Robin less than two seconds to agree to going to the bar with Steve. Now, they were walking down the street so that they could spy on two people they barely knew but were somehow entangled with.
“I know, I know,” Steve replied.
The bar was in sight. Chrissy hadn’t tagged the location or anything, but he recognized the place because he went there often. So often that it wasn’t out of the ordinary for him to show up with Robin. They’d done it before and they’d do it again.
The plan was for them to discreetly sit at a table in the back. But then they were at the door, and then they were opening the door, and then they were immediately being stared down by a blonde and a brunette at the bar.
Shit.
“Steve, what do we do?” Robin muttered rapidly.
“Uhhh,” he said, glancing over at the table he imagined they’d sit at. He thought about ignoring them and just sitting down, but they’d all already seen each other so that would have just been rude. “I think we just have to own it.”
“Own what? That we’re psychopaths?” Robin hissed.
And then, Chrissy was waving them both over to join them.
“Just follow my lead,” Steve said.
In hindsight, this plan had been really, really stupid.
Steve knew that his cover for all this was to get Robin and Chrissy in the same room again. But truthfully, Steve didn’t know Chrissy’s deal or if she wanted anything other than friendship. Steve could say this had nothing to do with Eddie all he wanted, but that wasn’t true.
He’d been wracking his brain all day to make sense of this. His fight with Eddie the night prior had been a little fuzzy, but one part of it really stuck with him.
Just a few years of King Steve bullying the school freak.
Well, that comment plus Eddie saying that Steve’s music sucked. That stung, but he wasn’t expecting someone like Eddie to appreciate his music anyway. The truth was, Steve had left high school behind, and he’d moved on, and he’d forgotten the shit he’d done back then. All that bystander crap, the teasing, the little comments that Steve didn’t understand the impact of at the time.
Steve didn’t like Eddie. He still thought Eddie was a dick. But that didn’t mean Steve hadn’t also been a dick back then.
All of this was very complicated, and the residual headache from the hangover made his head spin. Actually, the dizziness was probably also from the hangover. The thought of drinking made him want to hurl. Good thing he was at a bar, right?
“Hey!” Chrissy said as they approached. “What are you guys doing here?!” She jumped up to hug Steve, then Robin, and Steve watched as his friend acted as if the physical contact with her crush didn’t affect her.
“We, uh -” Steve began. “We come here a lot, actually. Well, I do. I live just down the road.”
His gaze drifted to Eddie, who gave Steve a knowing smirk.
“Oh my god, Robin, I’m actually so glad you’re here,” Chrissy said. “Your style is just - I mean, wow! Where do you get your clothes?”
Robin’s eyes landed on Steve’s for a nanosecond, but it was enough for him to know exactly what was going through her brain. Basically just the embodiment of a bunch of exclamation points.
“I - I usually thrift them, actually!” Robin responded.
Then, Chrissy continued asking where Robin thrifted, and whether she could come with sometime, and Steve figured they’d be at it for a while.
Huh. Maybe there would be something there after all.
Of course, while they were talking, this left Steve to either stand there awkwardly or interact with Eddie. He probably would have chosen the awkward standing, had Eddie not chosen the opposite.
“Well, if it isn’t HARVEST in the flesh. To what do I owe the pleasure?” Eddie began. He was smiling, but his tone was biting. Steve looked at Eddie, nodded his head toward Chrissy and Robin, then looked back at Eddie. He shrugged. “Ah, I see.”
“Yeah.”
“No other reason?” Eddie prodded, playing dumb.
“Nope,” Steve said. “Like I said, I live right -”
“Down the road,” Eddie interrupted. “So I heard.” Steve swallowed. He kinda felt like he was being interrogated or something. Eddie was making this extremely uncomfortable.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Steve wondered, desperately wanting this interaction to be over. Unfortunately, Chrissy and Robin were still chatting eagerly.
“Like what, HARVEST?” Eddie asked. Steve rolled his eyes.
“Steve is fine.”
“Hmm, is he though?” Eddie retorted. “I don’t think you want me to treat you like I treat Steve.”
God, Eddie knew how to push Steve’s buttons. His heart was racing, he was so mad. He clenched his jaw and considered how bad it would be to smack the smug grin off Eddie’s face.
Really bad. He knew that. He took deep breaths instead and relaxed. His hands had balled into fists at some point during the conversation. He extended his fingers out, flexing them. He was trying to leave this version of himself in the past, not bring him back. Another deep breath.
“Whatever, Munson,” Steve sighed. “I just -”
“Hey, guys?” Robin said, diverting the attention to her. She pointed to the window, where a crowd of people had gathered.
Some of them had cameras.
“Shit,” Chrissy said. “How long do you think they’ve been there?”
“I dunno,” Steve responded. “You wanna get out of here?”
“Yeah,” Chrissy agreed. Eddie and Robin looked at each other this time, both outside of Chrissy and Steve’s shared understanding.
Good thing all of them looked nice. Those pictures were gonna be all over the place tomorrow.
Steve was here a lot, so he knew the bartenders and the owners, and he also knew how to sneak out when things like this happened.
“Come on,” he said, urging Chrissy to follow him. With Steve came Robin, and Eddie sure as hell didn’t want to be left there alone, so he came too. Oh, joy.
The four of them walked past the bar and through a sign marked for employees only. They wandered through the kitchen and left out a black door that led to an alley behind the building.
“So, what now?” Robin asked once they were outside.
“I’ll give them about two minutes until they find us,” Steve replied.
“Is there somewhere else we could go?” Chrissy wondered. “I kind of don’t want to go home yet.”
“Well, I know HARVEST over here lives nearby,” Eddie said.
“Will you quit it with the HARVEST thing?” Steve complained.
“Sorry, do you prefer Harvey?” Eddie shot back. Steve groaned.
“You’re impossible.”
“Oh, boy,” Chrissy mumbled.
“I know, right?” Robin agreed. “Steve, can we go back to yours?”
“All of us?” Steve asked, knowing the answer already. It was his apartment. He could have flat out said that Eddie wasn’t allowed in. But he saw the look in Robin’s eyes, and he knew that if they all went back to the apartment, she could spend more time with Chrissy. “Alright, fine. Let’s go.”
-
Steve’s apartment was nice. It was huge, spacious, and all the utilities worked. It was also minimalist in that Steve hadn’t put up any decorations. He had the essentials - a couch, a TV, a table. Not much more.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting to have people over,” Steve said as they walked in.
“It’s beautiful,” Chrissy said.
“It’s empty,” Eddie noted. His apartment was a lot smaller, but it also was a lot more filled up. This place had nothing, basically. Eddie almost made a comment about Steve not having any money to decorate after paying what he assumed was an absurd rent, but he held his tongue.
“Yeah, tell me about it,” Robin agreed. “I keep throwing ideas his way, but he’d rather live in an asylum, basically.”
“I’m not here that often,” Steve explained, shrugging. “Sue me.”
“It definitely could use some color,” Chrissy agreed. “Art on the walls, maybe a rug -”
“Yes! Exactly!” Robin exclaimed. “I even have a Pinterest board.”
“Oh my god, can I see it?” Chrissy asked. Robin nodded, and then they were both sitting across the room looking at decor or some shit. All of the logistical stuff related to interior design was beyond Eddie. He just bought things that he liked and then put them where they best fit. He didn’t know anything about color-coding, and he didn’t even know what Pinterest was.
Anyway, Robin and Chrissy bonding so aggressively and so immediately (which was interesting, to say the least) left Eddie semi-alone with Steve once again.
“Can we talk?” Steve asked, surprising the hell out of Eddie. He had given Steve zero reason to want to talk to him, he’d made sure of it. Like, Eddie had been at his maximum asshole level for a few reasons. First and foremost, it was payback for high school. Second, it was fun. And third, because Eddie didn’t like Steve, and because he currently didn’t have anywhere else to direct his anger.
He didn’t say they were good reasons.
“Uh, suuuuure,” Eddie replied. Steve gestured for Eddie to follow him down the hall so they could have some privacy.
Oh, great. Now we’re fully alone.
-
Chrissy was amazing. She was wonderful. She was everything Robin hoped she’d be. It was almost too good to be true. No, it was definitely too good to be true.
They were huddled over Robin’s phone, talking about color theory and decorations which turned into art and hobbies which turned into a discussion about college (Robin went, Chrissy didn’t) and then finally their conversation settled on music.
“Have you listened to their stuff?” Robin asked, gesturing towards where the boys had gone. It had been a few minutes and no arguing or fights breaking out yet, as far as she could tell. Of course, she hadn’t been listening that intently.
“Sure,” Chrissy responded. “Corroded Coffin not so much, but that’s just because I’m not into that sort of music.”
“Very fair.”
“Yeah. But HARVEST I hear all the time. That one song is literally impossible to escape from.”
“Oh, we know,” Robin replied with a laugh. “Steve secretly can’t stand it’s that song that blew up.”
“What do you mean?” Chrissy wondered.
“Like, it’s definitely his most commercial song,” Robin explained. “I’ve been listening to Steve’s music since we met, and it’s a little out there sometimes, but now that I’m used to it I’m all for it. Anyway, his favorite songs are the ones most people haven’t heard. That’s why his new album is - I mean that’s why he -”
Robin stopped herself from saying the rest. Chrissy was great, but Robin wasn’t about to spill all of her best friend’s secrets.
“That’s why he what?” Chrissy teased, nudging Robin in the shoulder.
Dammit. It was really hard to avoid temptation when temptation was someone as vibrant as Chrissy Cunningham.
“That’s why he’s so excited about it,” Robin concluded.
Thank god. I can keep my best friend card.
“Oh, okay,” Chrissy said, nodding. “I’ll have to listen to his other stuff then.”
“Let me know what you think,” Robin replied.
“Of course I will.” Chrissy smiled, then pulled out her phone. To Robin’s surprise, she handed it to her with an empty contact open.
Holy shit.
Robin typed in her name and number, then triple checked to make sure she put it in correctly before handing the phone back to Chrissy.
“There you go,” she said, doing her best to remain calm.
“Thank you,” Chrissy said. “Wow, it’s so crazy. First with Eddie, now with you. I just feel like we’re all going to be really good friends.”
Friends. GOD. Ouch.
Robin probably should have expected that. She had expected it, really, but it stung nonetheless. That was okay. They could be friends. Robin cleared her throat and hoped she didn’t sound too disappointed.
“Yeah, if the two idiots in there can get their shit together,” Robin joked.
“I know!” Chrissy agreed. “Like, what’s going on with them?”
“I honestly have no idea.” She looked down the hall, still not hearing any arguing.
If she’d been alone, she would have pressed her ear to the door and listened in, but she had to be on her best behavior. You know, for her new friend.
-
“Sooo, what the hell is going on?” Eddie asked once they were in a different room. It looked like an office. There was music equipment everywhere.
“I’m just gonna go ahead and tell you a bunch of shit, okay? Because the last hour or so has been crazy and I’m still kind of hungover and I’m not interested in doing a whole dance with you.”
“Yeah, you made that clear last night when you didn’t dance with me,” Eddie deadpanned.
“Jesus,” Steve exhaled, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Could you just -”
“You wanna tell me something, so skip the preamble and tell me -”
“I’m sorry, okay?” Steve snapped. “I’m sorry for - I’m sorry about high school. I was an idiot.”
Oh. Well, shit.
“Past tense?” Eddie teased.
“Go to hell.”
“Okay, okay, point taken,” he relented with a light chuckle. “Thanks. I appreciate the apology.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, really,” Eddie confirmed. “Don’t worry, I’m still iffy about you for a bunch of other reasons.”
“Great,” Steve said, returning Eddie’s sarcastic tone.
“Cool,” Eddie replied. “So, is that it?”
“No.”
“No?” Eddie prodded.
“Wait, what are the other reasons?” Steve asked, losing his train of thought. Eddie scoffed.
“You want me to tell you why I don’t like you?” Eddie rebuffed. “Are you into that or something?”
“No, I just -”
“Come on, spit it out,” he demanded. “The quicker you say what you’re gonna say, the less time we have to talk to each other. What is it?”
Steve took a deep breath.
“I want my album to do well, and ever since this whole steddie thing happened, people have actually started talking about it, and -”
“Waaaait a goddamn second,” Eddie drawled. “Are you saying you want to actually, like, do the fake relationship thing?”
“No, I just don’t want to deny it,” Steve responded. “Let them talk, you know.”
Eddie almost laughed. Jesus Christ, this was rich. Eddie thought he’d be the one begging for scraps, yet here he was, in Steve’s apartment, listening to his high school bully ask him for a favor.
Eddie weighed his options. If he said no, it would feel great in the moment, but then this would be over.
The tables were turning, and he wasn’t going to let a bit of his power go to waste.
“Hmm, very interesting, Harvey,” he said. “The King’s come crawling back to the freak.” Steve scoffed.
“Our fake relationship benefits you more than me, you do realize that, right?” he reminded Eddie. “I’m just fine on my own. You get a popularity boost from this, so maybe you should try not to be a total asshole for once. I could find literally anyone else to do this with.”
The thing was, Eddie knew that wasn’t true. He could see right through the bullshit.
“You’re bluffing,” Eddie stated.
“What?”
“You’re bluffing,” he repeated. “Lest we forget you’re the one who asked me to go along with this.” Steve rolled his eyes.
“Ugh, ‘lest we forget.’ Why do you talk like that?”
“You’re avoiding the question,” Edde said, his eyes boring into Steve’s.
“What question?”
“Come on, Harrington. You want me. Why?”
Steve’s eyes narrowed, but didn’t break away.
“Okay, calm down with the whole ‘I want you’ thing, alright?” Steve’s agitation was just too cute. It was so easy to rile him up. “I’m doing this for my album, just like you are.”
“Yeaaah, I don’t buy it. What else is it?” Eddie couldn’t help it. He had to keep pushing.
“There’s nothing else, Eddie.”
“Don’t tell me, then,” he teased. “Let me guess. All those years ago when you laughed at me in high school, you were really just harboring some hidden crush on me that didn’t fully come to fruition until you saw me at Frolique?”
Steve’s face went pale, and for a moment Eddie wondered if he’d gone too far.
“Oh my god,” Steve scoffed. “Could you not be a jackass for literally one second?”
“Wait, was I right?” Eddie took a step forward, intrigued by the idea.
“No, you weren’t right, Munson,” Steve insisted. “I didn’t have a crush on you, I was just a dick.”
Ah. So much for that. Eddie shook his head and smiled.
“And now you’re just so goddamn pleasant, huh?” He turned to look at all the expensive shit Steve kept in there - high-tech recording equipment, instruments, microphones, sheet music.
“Usually, yeah,” Steve replied. “I’m actually nice to most people.” Eddie’s eyes were still focused on the sheet music, an increasing curiosity within him, but he held back and returned his focus to Steve.
“Aw, so I’m the exception? See, I knew I was special.”
If being a dick was so bad, then why was it so fun?
“Seriously, what’s wrong with you?” Steve asked.
“Oh god, sooooo many things,” Eddie replied. He meant it, too. He knew he had issues, but he sure as hell wasn’t going to talk to Steve about them. “And for the record, I can be pleasant too. Just ask Chrissy.”
“When did you get so close with her, anyway?”
“Since about an hour ago,” Eddie answered. “Anyway, I’m an absolute delight, Harrington. I only bite when it’s fun.”
“Then you must be having the time of your goddamn life,” Steve remarked.
It wasn’t not true, but once again, Eddie needed to be unpredictable. He just had this compulsive need to throw Steve off, to keep him guessing. Yeah, being an asshole to Steve Harrington was fun, but Eddie didn’t forget how much he hated the guy and everything he stood for.
“God, I wish,” he replied. “I hate this, but I’ll have fun when I can. I mean, my career is important, too. Why do you think I made a big fool of myself at that party? I fucking danced in public so that I could talk to you. I already told you - I don’t like your music, or your weird persona, and I don’t really care for you off-stage either.”
“Yeah? Well, the feeling is mutual,” Steve shot back.
Eddie smirked, a fire within him that somehow bloomed and burned at the same time. Matter is neither created nor destroyed right? Eddie was never that good in school, but that phrase always stuck with him. The fire - the anger, the pain, the hurt - it fueled him and it broke him down. An endless cycle. What he loved. What he didn’t. All of it was the same.
“Let me be fucking clear,” Eddie said. “I’m not doing this because it’s fun. I’m doing it because I get something out of it, got it?”
“Got it,” Steve replied. The air between them was tense, and it made Eddie feel alive.
“Okay,” he said at last. “Then we’ll let them talk.”

Sometime not long post-Kizuna, after waking up, and eventually getting back home, Steve asks of Steve's partner, Frigimon, genuinely surprised for once: You tackled Taichi?! Frigimon, genuinely attempting to explain: I didn't want to, but... Frigimon, only a bit bemused seeming: Well, Tentomon was worried, too... Steve, raising eyebrows, grinning a little: Tentomon, you say? You knew? Frigimon, nodding: It's a bit fuzzy. But... Tentomon was very worried about Koushiro and Taichi both, so Tentomon also definitely moved. Because Tentomon had to help Koushiro's friend. ... Like how I had to help you. Frigimon, adding: But I'm not sure if we were actually being "controlled" by Bellucci. Steve: You weren't. Frigimon: ... ? Steve, grinning: What you just said was all I need to know. Steve: Bellucci never stood a chance once she directly involved Koushiro, anyway. I'm just glad it's over now. Frigimon: You and me both. Steve, standing up to stretch: So, anyhow... Steve: ... We need to light the candles. Frigimon: You're right. Let's do it. Steve, in mind: (If only they knew what "potential" could mean to US.)
