El informe revela cómo agentes de la CIA y el FBI estaban utilizando los casinos de Macao pertenecientes al multimillonario del juego y financiador del Partido Republicano Adelson para atrapar y chantajear a funcionarios chinos.

“Una fuente confiable ha informado que funcionarios del gobierno central chino creen firmemente que Sands ha permitido que agentes de la CIA y el FBI operen desde sus instalaciones. Estos agentes aparentemente ‘monitorean a los funcionarios del gobierno continental’ que juegan en los casinos”, dice el informe.

El informe dice: “Según la agencia interna del gobierno central de China, anualmente se desperdician unos 2.000 millones de dólares al servir a funcionarios del gobierno chino que visitan Macao”.

Según sus fuentes “bien ubicadas”, el informe cita “que varios organismos gubernamentales de la República Popular China (RPC) han reportado 'pruebas' de 'agentes estadounidenses', operando desde Sands, 'atrayendo' y atrapando a funcionarios del gobierno continental, involucrados en juegos, para obligarlos a cooperar con los intereses del gobierno de Estados Unidos”.

"Existe una percepción generalizada entre los funcionarios de que Sands sirve a los intereses del gobierno estadounidense en Macao", concluye el informe.

Entre las fuentes “bien ubicadas”, el informe menciona a tres funcionarios de la agencia gubernamental responsable de supervisar Macao y Hong Kong, dos funcionarios del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores chino y un poderoso hombre de negocios con estrechos vínculos en la capital china.

Al considerarlo un intento estadounidense de interferir en la política del territorio, Beijing ha negado a Estados Unidos la apertura de un consulado en Macao.

“Había, dentro de los círculos del gobierno chino, la sospecha de que Estados Unidos se involucraría más en la política local de Macao si se le concediera una presencia diplomática en la [región]. Según nuestras otras fuentes, algunos de los funcionarios de la República Popular China (RPC) involucrados sospechaban fuertemente que Sands estaba detrás de la iniciativa diplomática de Estados Unidos”, dice el informe.

Casos similares tampoco son desconocidos en la India. Recientemente, una empresa de gestión de la construcción, Louis Berger, fue acusada de sobornar a funcionarios indios con varios millones de rupias para ganar dos importantes proyectos de desarrollo hídrico en Goa y Guwahati.

Como informó The Hindu, “El soborno de 976.630 dólares para un proyecto en Goa incluyó pagos a un ministro, cuyos detalles no han sido revelados por el Departamento de Justicia”.

Para resolver los cargos de soborno a funcionarios en India, Indonesia, Vietnam y Kuwait para obtener contratos gubernamentales de gestión de obras, la empresa acordó pagar una multa penal de 17,1 millones de dólares.

Mientras se desarrolla el caso, el ministro principal de Goa, Laxmikant Parsekar, dijo que se utilizó una palabra clave relacionada con la ingeniería como camuflaje para las demandas de soborno.

El denunciante dijo que le pidieron que mintiera y tergiversara datos financieros ante la Agencia de Auditoría de Contratos de Defensa del Pentágono.

Sin embargo son muchas las preguntas que surgen del estudio de este tipo de casos.

¿Son estos casos aleatorios aislados? ¿Cuántas empresas multinacionales han sido sorprendidas en el pasado reciente sobornando a funcionarios gubernamentales? ¿Existe algún patrón para este método? ¿Por qué se repite una y otra vez? ¿Estas empresas funcionan por sí solas o operan en conjunto con intereses de gobiernos extranjeros, como hemos visto en el caso de Sands Macau? Los chinos, por su parte, se han negado a que Estados Unidos abra su consulado en Macao, preocupados por la intromisión extranjera en la política y la economía de la región. ¿Cuál debería ser la respuesta del Gobierno indio a tales actos?

Pioneering US Journalist Barbara Walters Dead at 93

Legendary News broadcaster Barbara Walters has died, she was 93. Her death was announced by ABC news in a special broadcast.

Barbara Walters joined ABC in 1972 and quickly became a household name in the United States. She was the first female anchor on an evening news program and in 1979 became a co-host of the award-winning "20/20" news show. In 1997, she launched "The View." Both 20/20 and The View remain staples on American televisions screens today.

Walters' career spanned five decades, during which she won 12 Emmy awards. She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Dena Guber. She was married four times to three different men, trying twice with TV executive Merv Adelson.

Known for her interviews, Walters got her start as a correspondent before working her way up to news anchor.

"We were all influenced by Barbara Walters," ABC News' David Muir said in a tribute that aired Friday. Muir called her an "extraordinary human being, journalist, pioneer, legend."

Posting on Twitter, Disney CEO and former President of ABC Television, Bob Igor posted on Twitter about Walters' life and death.

"Barbara was a true legend, a pioneer not just for women in journalism but for journalism itself. She was a one-of-a-kind reporter who landed many of the most important interviews of our time, from heads of state and leaders of regimes to the biggest celebrities and sports icons. I had the pleasure of calling Barbara a colleague for more than three decades, but more importantly, I was able to call her a dear friend. She will be missed by all of us at The Walt Disney Company, and we send our deepest condolences to her daughter, Jacqueline."

Walters was born on September 25, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts to Dena and Louis Walters. Her dad was a nightclub owner and Walters joined the news business after her family went broke. She went on to interview some of the richest and most powerful people in the world.

Walters' longtime representative and friend Cindi Berger responded to the news by calling Walters "a trailblazer not only for female journalists but for all women," noting that she passed away peacefully and while surrounded by loved ones in her home.

Before working at ABC, Walters graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in the 1950s and got work as a writer for NBC's Today show in 1961. Later she would become the show's first female host and won her first Emmy for her work there in 1975. The next year she would join ABC's Evening News as the first female co-anchor of an evening news program.

During a 2014 ceremony that renamed part of the ABC News' Headquarters "The Barbara Walters Building" Walters explained what she thinks her legacy is.

"[I]t's not the interviews with presidents, or heads of state, nor celebrities. If I have a legacy, and I've said this before and I mean it so sincerely, I hope that I played a small role in paving the way for so many of you fabulous women."
