Unfamiliar - Ch. 15: Invitations
Tumblr media
Art: @mmm-asbestos ☆ First 2 chapters ☆ Prev. (Ch. 14)  ☆ AO3
It was a quick run to the future site of Magic City at the edge of town; Amy was disappointed she couldn’t convince Sonic to slow down and chat for a bit. They’d zoomed off from her house and zipped up and around the hills and through town in no time. But there was always after the mission- maybe he’d be more receptive to taking a break then, Amy mused. She could sense that he was still on edge for now.
Letting Amy down from his grasp, Sonic looked into the construction site. Enormous foundations had been laid over several acres since the last time he’d visited. But now, instead of a bustling job site he and Amy found themselves in a comparatively calm environment. No heavy machinery in operation or foreman barking commands. Just dusty concrete floors and towering piles of materials- mostly sheet-metal- dotted with a few temporary trailers probably housing small offices and equipment. The pair looked at one another in confusion, unsure what to make of the unexpected silence.
Amy tiptoed over the dusty ground in a vain effort to prevent her shoes from being covered in construction debris. “Are they on a lunch break or something?” she asked as the pair approached a large trailer.
“Maybe…” Sonic flung himself ahead to the trailer, leaving a dusty cloud in his trail.
He pressed his face to one of its windows. The structure served as a break room for the workers on site, but the tables and chairs inside sat empty. “If they were, they’d be here, but the place is abandoned!” Sonic turned back to a wheezing Amy, who was waving an irate hand through the dust cloud in front of her face. “Oops- sorry,” he chuckled awkwardly.
“It’s fine,” she responded, holding back a sneeze. Now’s not the time to complain, she told herself. Things had to go as smoothly as possible.
The two walked around a while in silence. The dusty sound crunched beneath their steps. It was desolate.
As the silence grew more awkward, Amy rattled her brain for conversation topics. What could she bring up to convince Sonic to stay alone with her after they were finished here? She was about to blurt out the first thing she could think of.
That’s when a low rumbling cut through. Amy raised a brow at Sonic.
“Did you skip breakfast?”
He looked away in embarrassment. “Yeah… heh. Sorry.”
She shook her head smugly. “I’ve told you not to do that.”
“You know I don’t like to eat first thing in the morning,” he groaned. His stomach followed again.
Amy laughed. “So you woke up minutes before picking me up, huh?”
“So I might’ve been up late..” Sonic smiled, mildly embarrassed. “But I found that picture while I was cleaning up, so it was worth it!”
Her laughter slowed to an amused giggle. “Yeah, it’s probably the only picture we all have together when we were kids.”
“We’re busy people,” he shrugged . “Can’t exactly sit down for cake when we’re saving the planet.” His smile only widened at the thought, as if reminiscing about past adventures.
“Well, maybe this year we’ll have a chance. Oh! We should totally recreate that photo! Wouldn’t that be cute?” she beamed.
As little as he enjoyed having his photo taken, Sonic did like the idea. But it wouldn’t stop him from teasing her about it.
“We could… but I thought you’d want something more exciting for your party this year. You’re gonna be an adult! Can’t be acting childish anymore,” he joked.
“Oh, yeah, gonna be 18. I’m practically middle aged,” she ribbed back. “And you’ll be 21 this summer. What does that make you?”
“Ancient. One foot in the grave.”
They burst out laughing in unison. When their voices echoed back at them in the empty landscape, the pair both covered their mouths, doing their best to hold back their snickers. But watching your friend try not to laugh is one of the funniest things you could see. They both had to stop walking until they caught their breath.
Wiping a hysterical tear from her eye, Amy finally took a deep enough breath to recover. There probably wouldn’t be a better opportunity to ask.
She looked to him confidently. “Hey, let’s go to lunch after this.”
“Sure,” Sonic responded between breaths. “I’m starving. We’ll let Tails know-”
“Oh! Look!” she quickly changed the subject. “Uh… Are those people over there?”
Sonic looked toward the horizon. From there, it seemed like the flattened landscape went on forever. He squinted into the distance.
“Hey, you’re right!”
I am? Amy was just as surprised as he was to finally spot some people a couple hundred yards down the way.
A pair of stern-looking men lolled around with clipboards, wearing hardhats but otherwise in business attire. They were being led around by a woman in coveralls- the only person for what seemed like miles that looked to be part of any kind of construction team.
“Hey!” Sonic called out to them excitedly, “are you guys with the construction crew?”
The strangers all turned back in their direction. Amy noticed the woman immediately bring her palm to her face in annoyance as the men looked on in confusion.
“Oh, hey, it’s you!” Sonic lit up. “Wait there!” His voice echoed through the sparse landscape as he got ready to run in their direction- but stopped himself as he remembered the dust cloud he’d kicked up. He turned back to Amy. “Hey- I talked to that lady last time I was here, I bet she’ll help us.”
“Yeah... she seems to remember you.” Amy took notice of Sonic’s quick change of pace. She couldn’t keep a small smile from forming across her lips as he walked just barely ahead, slowing down with her in mind. Before she could overthink the gesture any further, Sonic reached back for her hand.
“Come on, don’t wanna keep her waiting,” he winked playfully.
As he ushered her along, the subtle smirk on Amy’s face spread into a lovestruck grin. There was a lot of good to be said about Sonic, but to say he could be brash was an understatement. They joked about growing up, but maybe this small, mindful act was a demonstration of his growing maturity after all.
The woman groaned an apology to the two men before stepping out of their earshot.
Sonic approached with a wave and Amy in tow.
“You’re back,” she said to him plainly. “And there’s two of you now.”
“Glad you remember- though I can’t say I’m surprised,” Sonic smirked confidently.
There was no sign of amusement in her expression. “I have very important people here today, so you need to leave. Now.”
“Aw, come on! We’re just looking for Eggman. Help us out!”
“That’s- ugh.” The woman let out an exasperated sigh. “Look, that’s not my department. Call his assistant or something.”
“Does Eggman have an assistant?” Amy whispered to Sonic. He offered a shrug before turning back to the lady.
“We’re sorta in a hurry. Just point us in his direction and we’ll get out of your hair,” he told the woman.
“No. You’re trespassing, we’re behind schedule, our investors are irate- just leave before I have to call security.”
“Behind schedule?” Amy chimed in. “Didn’t you guys just break ground a few weeks ago? Why isn’t there anyone here if you’re behind?”
If the poor woman had any patience to begin with, it ran out then and there. “Well, most of the staff’s contracts were cut short like 3 days ago. Doctor Eggman said he’d take care of the rest of the building himself but apparently his ‘equipment’ isn’t in yet for some reason, so he has us stalling, and I’m here with two very upset investors who are ready to pull out of this project if we don’t get things moving, and somehow opening date is in a matter of weeks, and-”
Amy interrupted. “Oh, that’s what we’re here to talk to him about,” she bluffed.
The woman looked skeptical, but it was plain to see that stress was getting the better of her. “About… opening date?”
“About… why his equipment is missing. We took it. Hostage.” Amy’s eyes shot back at Sonic’s momentarily. He stood wide-eyed but let her continue.
A momentary, stunned silence followed.
“Are you serious?”
“Yep,” Sonic cut in. “That’s what we do! Live to be a thorn in Egghead’s side; Mortal enemies and all.”
In her desperation, the woman turned back to see her clients studying their wrists impatiently. One of the men pointed to his watch irritably. She returned her attention to the nuisance at hand, lowering her voice. “I know you two have some ancient beef I don’t care about, but I’ve just been hired to do an honest job, ok? I’ll tell you where to find him- but you didn’t hear it from me.”
“Totally!” Amy responded, louder than she intended. “Our lips are sealed!”
“Quiet down! Ugh- I’m so fired…”
She instructed Sonic and Amy on how to reach The Doctor in hushed tones and subtle gestures. He was evidently on sight in a freshly-built underground lab. The entrance was hidden but accessible via key-card.
“So, any chance we could borrow your ID?” Sonic chuckled.
The woman responded only with an eye roll before quickly going back to her work.
“Thanks, anyway,” he called out to her with a wave. “Well, guess we’re on our own from there.” He turned to Amy with a grin. “Nice bluff!”
“Thanks,” she returned. “But, what do you think she meant by missing equipment?”
“Well, maybe…” Sonic trailed off without finishing. “Ah- who knows. Let’s get moving.”
The entrance wasn’t hard to find for those who knew where to look. A series of square steel support columns lined a freshly laid concrete slab, one of many around the acres-wide construction site. There was the faint shape of a doorway outlined on the otherwise smooth surface of the pillars, just where Sonic and Amy were told they’d find the entrance.
“I bet this is it,” Amy remarked, running her fingertips over the shallow mark on one of the column’s facets. “It’s… subtle.”
“Bit outta character for Eggman.” Sonic’s fist met his hip as he leaned back in observation. “We’d usually just break in, but…”
A flick of her wrist surrounded Amy’s hand in a sudden cloud of pink. “Well, it’s worked so far.” She brandished her hammer with a giggle. “Been a little bit since I got to use this.”
“After you, then.”
Amy curtseyed playfully before taking her stance. A moment later, her hammer made contact with the hard surface, denting it considerably to reveal the clear shape of a doorway. A screeching alarm rang out from the door upon contact. Ignoring it, Amy pulled back her hammer a second time, the door well off its hinges after another swing. The high-pitch whine grew louder, emitting from an alarm panel just beyond the destroyed entrance.
Sonic scratched at his ear with a grimace. “Gotta love an alarm. Let’s-”
A third bash of Amy’s hammer interrupted him. The heavy door smashed against the control panel and cut off the screeching alarm in an instant as the dented steel slab fell off the frame to the floor beyond the entrance. “Better?”
“You bet,” he snickered.  “Good work. Let’s get in there!” As he took a step forward, Sonic left a pat on Amy’s shoulder.
A sweet chill tickled Amy’s spine when he did. She couldn’t hold back a soft giggle as they stepped into the dark inside the structure.
Just beyond the entrance sat a short level, leading directly to a winding underground staircase, deep past the concrete foundation they were standing on a moment ago. The ceilings were fairly low, the top of the column no doubt built with sturdier materials to support the eventual building it would be housed in. Dim lights lined the walls, the only indication that there was anything beyond a few feet in front of them. Amy and Sonic moved forward cautiously. The eerie, quiet stairwell echoed with their steps and grew darker as they descended. It was a far cry from the audacious design they had come to expect from Dr. Eggman.
The pair were just a few steps down when they were greeted by a line of unfriendly security bots floating their way up the stairs in their direction.
“Right on cue,” Sonic sneered.
He jumped into action instantly, making quick work of the first two robots in front of them as Amy smashed her way through a third. Sonic spun out a good way down the staircase, knocking around several more. Amy swung at each of the disoriented guards before they could regain their balance, finishing them off as she caught up. When she reached the next level, however, she stopped in her tracks behind Sonic’s outstretched arm.
Two much larger robots with hammers of their own stood in front of them, a doorway just beyond their guard. They each took a step toward Amy and Sonic as the latter got ready to spring back into battle. Suddenly, a shrill voice could be heard from a nearby speaker mounted to the ceiling.
“Stand down boys, these two little rodents are guests,” Eggman commanded.
Sonic’s ears perked up. “Could’ve told that to the unlucky bunch back there,” he smirked.
“You could’ve waited for your invitation instead of knocking down my door, you pest,” Eggman retorted harshly. “But since you’re here…”
“Invitation?” Amy whispered to Sonic. He looked just as perplexed.
The doorway behind the guard bots split apart. The room beyond was bright- blindingly so- revealing an office suite fit for a business executive, complete with a robotic secretary sitting at a front desk. Stylishly decorated, it was hardly one of Eggman’s usual lab setups.
Sonic and Amy squinted as they walked past the robots cautiously. Amy held her hammer up close to her chest defensively.
“I’m afraid there are no weapons allowed in the executive suite,” a feminine robotic voice rang out from behind the desk. “I can take that for you if you’d like, miss.”
Amy’s head whipped around to meet the secretary’s gaze. It looked on at her stiffly with an eerie “smile” and coldly lit blue eyes. Amy thought she’d be used to being stared at by a robot by now, but this creepy computer was nothing like Metal. She couldn’t help but think of him as “alive” now. But the secretary in front of her was just a machine.
“I can take that for you if you’d like, miss,” the robot repeated.
“Oh- no- thank you.” Amy responded finally, her hammer disappearing from her grasp in a rosy puff.
The robot did not react. “Can I get you a drink?”
Sonic ignored her. “Yo, Eggman! You gonna leave us waiting?”
“The Doctor will be with you shortly. Can I get you a drink?” the secretary asked again.
“These robots are getting creepier, huh Ames?” Sonic said as he peered directly at its icy eyes.
Eggman’s voice interrupted once again, this time from a speaker on the secretary’s desk. “It’s alright- let them in.”
“The Doctor will see you now.” The light in the robot’s eyes blinked green momentarily as another door opened behind its desk.
It remained unmoving, facing straight ahead as Amy and Sonic walked past it. Definitely creepier, Amy thought.
“So glad you could make it,” Eggman remarked sarcastically from behind an executive desk. “Sit.”
“Swanky place you got here,” Sonic commented as he peered around the room. “Unlike you to be this tasteful.”
“You’re a delight as always,” he grumbled back. “Harassing my staff and destroying my security just weeks before opening. Can’t say I’m surprised.”
“Yeah, I keep hearing that- no offense but this place is pretty far from opening date,” Sonic snickered.
“Of course you would think that. I said sit!”
Sonic shrugged and sat back in a stiff chair opposite Eggman’s desk. Amy did the same, still taking in her surroundings tentatively. She looked for a spot to leave the surveillance microphone.
“Alright,” Sonic said impatiently, “I’ll get to the point- what evil scheme are you up to this time?”
Eggman cackled in response. “I’ll tell you all about my ‘scheme’ if you tell me what you’re doing with my ‘equipment’.”
“You heard that, huh?” Sonic shrugged. “It was just a bluff.”
“Well, since you’re here…” Eggman slapped four glossy tickets on the desk in front of him. “You and the other two pests are invited to the grand opening of Magic City.”
Sonic blinked. “Very funny. Are you gonna tell us what you’re really up to?”
“Are you going to tell me what you think you’re doing with Metal Sonic?”
Amy stiffened at the mention of the name. Sonic couldn’t keep his brows from rising  in surprise.
“And why would we be harboring that creepy thing?” Sonic responded after a pause.
Eggman grumbled. “He’s been missing for weeks. You were the last ones to see him.”
“Sounds like you need to keep better track of your property.”
Amy didn’t like the idea of calling Metal “property,” but she stopped herself from saying anything. She could feel Eggman’s eyes on her from behind his dark shades. She turned her face away without a word in the silent moments that followed.
“Hm.” Eggman leaned back in his chair, pensively folding his hands over his chest. “You know, Metal wasn’t thrilled about this idea. I suppose it’s my fault- all Metal’s ever done is go after you.”
“Can’t blame my copy for being obsessed,” Sonic interrupted smugly.
“Humph. You could call it that- if you’re ignorant. But, it was a prime objective for many years…” Eggman scrunched his brow. “Bah- anyway, my goals are different now. Perhaps he was a bit conflicted. We all know he has a tendency to be… rebellious, despite my best efforts…”
Sonic rolled his eyes at the long-winded response. “Why wouldn’t you just reprogram him?”
“Don’t act like a fool. You know as well as I that Metal’s AI makes him more than a machine!” Eggman paused with a sigh. “Not that I haven’t tried,” he mumbled under his breath. “Well, given his unique ‘programming,’ I thought a bit more freedom could be beneficial at this stage in Metal’s development. So, I let him have it,” he shrugged. “That’s why I didn’t go back for him. However, I did expect him back by now…”
Amy couldn’t help but scoff at his last remark. “Did you even try to look for him?”
Eggman raised a brow at her. “Of course I did,” he grumbled. “Metal wasn’t where I left him and all systems have been offline. Why would you even care?”
“I don’t!” Amy huffed. Getting his attention was a mistake. She fidgeted uncomfortably in the stiff chair, waiting for his focus to shift away from her.
“If you’re so sure we have your robot,” Sonic chimed in, “why don’t you just come looking?”
“Because,” Eggman gestured with both hands to the wall behind him, which immediately lit up with concept images of the upcoming Magic City. “You saw my investors, you’ve harassed my staff. This is my life now. The time for barging into your pathetic little hideouts is behind me.” He grinned sardonically. “I need to be on my best behavior, don’t you think?”
A brief, stunned silence followed as Amy and Sonic squinted at the intricately rendered images and plans rotating on the screen behind Eggman.
“You expect us to believe that your so-called investors trust you to build a whole luxury resort with your track record?” Sonic shrugged arrogantly. “Every casino and theme park you’ve built has been a deathtrap.”
“My experience is unmatched. Why do you think they trust me to be the one to build it?” Eggman grinned.
“I don’t know,” Sonic continued, “they didn’t seem too happy with your progress.”
“I have my ways.” Eggman lowered his arms, folding his hands on the desk in front of him as the massive screens dimmed once again. “If you would just return my ‘equipment’.”
Now Amy and Sonic realized how accurate their earlier bluff really was. They exchanged a quick glance in realization.
Uneasy, Sonic pressed himself up in his chair. “What’s Metal Sonic gonna do for this dump?”
“Trade secret.” A beam of light flashed across Eggman’s eyes, reflecting off his shaded glasses as he turned his gaze down. His hands folded over his rumpled mustache. “Consider this a truce. Send back Metal Sonic, and we’ll just stay out of each other’s hair from now on, hm?”
“Why would we do that when we could take out your whole operation now?” Sonic grew serious, drawing all of The Doctor’s attention.
Amy saw her opportunity and gripped the bottom of her chair to plant the device. She sat bolt upright when it made a tiny click. Neither Sonic nor Eggman seemed to notice.
“So you do have him.” An irritated scowl twisted The Doctor’s mouth.
“Yeah, right.” Sonic leaned back into his chair with crossed arms, challenging Eggman with a defiant stare.
“So aggressive,” Eggman shook his head. His elbows made their way onto the arms of his chair as he sat relaxed into it, uninterested in participating in a staring contest with the pest in front of him. “Just come to the opening and see for yourself that there’s nothing nefarious going on. You little rats will get to have the night of your lives, and everyone will see that there are no hard feelings between us. Good for branding, as it were.”
Sonic only raised a brow, peering into Eggman’s obscured eyes.
“Are you scared?” The corners of Eggman’s mouth lifted smugly.
Sonic scoffed. “What?”
“Never thought I’d see you so apprehensive to come to a party! Why else would you refuse?”
“I’m not-” Sonic huffed indignantly. “How do we know this isn’t one of your traps?”
“You don’t. But it’s never stopped you before,” Eggman cackled.
The phone on Eggman’s desk chimed, followed by a robotic voice. “Doctor, your next appointment is here.”
“Thanks, we’re almost finished here.” Eggman turned his attention back to the pair in front of him. “I do hope you can all make it. However, I’m a very busy man with many meetings, so if you’ll see yourselves out…” he gestured again, this time to his right. The wall behind him opened to reveal an elevator a few feet away.
“Right. More investors, I bet,” Sonic said sarcastically, standing up from his seat. “We’ll be there. If we don’t bust you first.”
Amy followed behind him, glancing back at her seat apprehensively. She was relieved to see the device wasn’t visible from the side.
Eggman stood up, ushering the pair into the lift.
“Oh, and Sonic,” as they were both stepping  in, Eggman took Sonic by the shoulder to get his attention.  “I trust you’ll make the right decision about returning my… ‘equipment’.”
Sonic turned back to The Doctor. He paused at the uncharacteristic gesture. “Uh- I don’t know what you mean?” He stumbled on his words.
Eggman stepped back, waving them off. “Sure, sure. And clean Metal up before you reactivate him or I’m sending you a bill for damages.”
“We don’t have your-” Sonic began to shoot back before the elevator’s rounded doors snapped shut between them.
“Can you believe him?!” he turned back to Amy irately.
“Shh!” Amy scolded faintly as the lift made its way back up to the surface. She shifted her eyes around the compact tube, sure they were being watched.
Sonic caught on, clicking his tongue. He crossed his arms with a grumble as they made their way back to the surface.
They both stepped out warily once there. The tube opened from another towering column, diagonal from the one they had entered. Its doors abruptly clamped together behind them. Amy and Sonic could see the towering structure they’d entered from hundreds of yards away
Amy and Sonic gave each other a knowing look. He reached a hand out to her.
“Let’s go.”

Frontiers but Sonic can’t find Tails....
-------------------------------
If he is in pain, he doesn’t tell.
Besides, there’s no time for that. He needs to be quick and he knows he has to find all the Chaos Emeralds again but that’s the least of his worries. All of the mechs that have infested this island as well do not pose a threat to his ultimate goal.
He has to find his little brother.
This is the third island he’s visiting, this one way up in the sky. Anyone could have missed it but not him. Not when he is in such a hurry. As comforting as the feeling of the Chaos Emeralds encircling him was, them giving him all the strength he needed to pull through and fight the last titans, he unfortunately couldn’t hold on to them. Yet, he has to save his friends, no matter what happens. And he will save them. He will allow himself to slow down - just a tiny bit - only the moment he finds Tails. He is sure Amy and Knuckles are safe for the time being because he saw them, he talked to them. He wouldn’t stop worrying until he makes sure Tails is there too.
In order to free him from his prison cell, he needs those “memory tokens”, as Amy called them. And so, he runs. He runs around the island, on top of the volcano, down to the very edge of the island, even in the underground tunnels and the cyber spaces. He visits all the small separate floating rocks, even the most inaccessible ones, but there’s nothing to be found. Well, nothing except for the emeralds that he wouldn’t have normally noticed, hadn’t it been for their almost calling out to him. Days have passed, he’s sure, despite him not being able to quite grasp the concept of time anymore.
Is he on the wrong island? It can’t be, the emeralds brought him here for a reason.
He reaches the center of it all. And he finds the next titan bearing a sword as long as its entire body. This is gonna be tough. Especially at his state. He’s feeling numb, weaker by the second, the weird energy soaring through his veins and messing with his head. He can barely hear the voice that tells him to destroy the titan as his own voice inside his head gets stronger, louder and more corrupted. As if he’s losing the signal.
As if he’s losing control.
He doesn’t know who to blame. This weird floating girl, Eggman, the voice in the sky or the titans? But no matter which one has caused this, he’s the one who failed to find his little brother.
His little brother. His best buddy.
“Come on buddy. I found our friends. Where are you?”
There’s no answer. Not that he was expecting one. But he was hoping that somehow, somewhere, his little brother was just around the corner, ready to attack him to try and scare him just like they did way too long ago. He is still hoping that he heard his words. But nothing happens.
He jumps at the titan, not sure of what to do next. He doesn’t need to know where to go, he just has to keep going forward. That’s how it has always been, right?
The last emerald is retrieved and the corrupted energy is soon replaced by chaos energy that somehow makes him feel warm and safe, somehow it gives him the hope he lost, the energy he needs to put this titan six feet under. He inhales deeply, feeling like it’s the first time he can actually breathe since the moment he stepped foot on this island.
And then he soars like the wind, not wasting any time, he shoots like a shooting star, aiming for his target.
There’s no voice inside his head. Nothing can stop him now.
“Sonic!”
Except for that voice.
He stops for a moment and looks around. The name barely rings a bell but mentally slaps himself when he realizes that’s his own name. He hasn’t heard it in some time, that’s probably the reason it somehow slipped away from his memories. But most importantly, he hasn’t heard that voice in ages, at least that’s how it feels to him.
“Buddy?”
A forceful hit sends him flying backwards, until his back meets the cliffside. It takes him a moment to recover but determination takes over and he’s flying once again. Sonic hearing his friends calling out his name, even if it was just his fantasy, was all the strength he was missing to finish this enemy off.
He hears it once again as he catches the sword just in time before it slices him in half. He smiles. He takes the sword in his own hands and does what he is supposed to do.
Sonic looks at the sky, waiting for answers, desperately. This was the last titan and it’s gone. What else does he have to do to find his little buddy? He exhales sharply, as impatience takes the best of him and starts boosting towards the horizon. In just a second he’s gone.
“Sonic...” Tails whispers, clearly worried as he uses cyberspace to travel to the next island alongside his big brother. A serious face replaces his concerned one.
“I’ve been there. I’ve seen it. All of it. You can do this, Sonic. I’ll be by your side.” In a couple seconds he’s in Rhea island, floating in the sky just like he was in all of the previous islands. He spots the familiar blue just below him and quickly flies to his side. He witnesses Sonic struggling to keep standing, slouching into his hand. This is so much worse than when they first got here. He seems so close to collapsing and Tails doesn’t remember the last time he’s seen him so broken, so lost.
“Be careful.” Tails whispers, though Sonic still can’t see him.
“Careful? Where’s the fun in that?”

Resigned to being a spectator in her own life, what she never expected to find was friendship, drama, and (maybe-sorta-kinda) romance. Highschool AU / (ft Sonamy, Knouge, Taismo, Silvaze, Shadia / REWRITE)
(Stellar… no pun intended)

The Bonkening
A Knucklesverse bit of writing, from the Echinda's Parade discord server. @nights-nonsensical-ramblings wrote the first bit up to the scene break, and I took over from there. This was entirely Night's idea, I just stole it and ran with it, like the greedy little gremlin I am.
Unsure who some of these Knux's are? Check The Knucklesverse Guide for a quick rundown.
~~~~~
Z was bored. Bored bored bored. Everyone in his world was busy and when he made his way to the Sanctuary most of the other Knuckles weren’t there, and the ones that were were all distracted by something or other that Z considered equally boring to the things everyone in his world was doing.
Gawain, Sinbad and Dread were sitting in a circle maintaining their swords and while that had interested Z at first it felt like they had been at it for hours. Nile was also present but was too busy directing his ghosts to clean the place to play or join in with any jokes or games. Beside Z’s fellow undead echidna were the distortions that always followed Cyber. The digitized echidna was being just as boring as everyone else and was simply standing there, muttering to Nile and flicking through his holograms doing who knows what.
Z huffed and sat down on the floor near the Emerald and laid back to stare at the ceiling, not bothering to check if there were any more Knuckles' around.
What to do, what to do. All the other Knuckles' were caught up in what they were doing and Z couldn't come up with a way to get them to do something fun with him.
That was until he heard something light and hollow hit the floor behind him.
Z sat back up to see the twins standing there with a couple of cardboard tubes in their hands and one on the floor by their feet.
The little Zombie's eyes went wide and his mouth shifted into a large grin as he began to pick up on what the almost entirely identical echidna were suggesting.
One of the twins, he was pretty sure it was Yunuen, returned his grin and handed him a cardboard tube, making the little zombie bounce on his heels with excitement. Another constant among Knuckles' was enjoyment of spars and low stakes battles with loved ones.
Z turned his gaze to Metzli, who remained a few paces back with the rest of the cardboard tubes. "Are you gonna give the others their tubes too?"
Z received a head shake in response. "Nah, they're gonna have to take them from me first."
Yunuen let out a playful huff and sent a smirk towards his twin. "Should be pretty easy, you're always phasing through and dropping stuff"
"HEY!"
Yunuen was proven right as the cardboard tubes phased through Metzli's hands and all clattered to the floor.
Z chose to leave the twins to bicker and pick out his target, but not before stopping to give the Master Emerald a look, partly afraid of being scolded. But all he received was encouragement from the giant gemstone and Z couldn't suppress the excited giggle as he ran off ready to cause mischief.
~X~X~X~
Dread sat and focused on the sword in his lap. He may not have always gotten along with Sinbad and Gawain, but they understood the importance of proper sword care.
The three passed the sharpening stone between them, no words being needed. Just the soft 'shhik' as it passed over their blades.
The pirate sensed someone pass behind him, and, ordinarily that would have sent his nerves on high alert. But here, at the Sanctuary, he stayed calm. He was in no danger here. No chance for a sneak attack.
That was, until he felt the soft 'bonk' of something bouncing off his shoulder.
He paused in his sharpening, turning slowly to find Little Z standing behind him, a wide smile on his face, and a long cardboard tube in his hands. The boy stood with the tube gripped in both hands, almost bouncing on the balls of his feet in excitement.
"Fight me!"
Dread stared at him for a moment, before turning back around. "No."
Another bonk.
"Quit it."
Bonk.
Dread pulled his muzzle into a little scowl, flicking his eyes over to Gawain and Sinbad. They sat watching the scene, little smiles curling their lips.
"C'mon, Dread," Z said, and the smile in his voice was evident. "Fight me!"
Dread uttered a frustrated sigh, lifting his sword to examine the edge of the blade.
"Ye wouldn't stand a chance, lad."
Bonk.
"Sounds like you're scared I'll beat you!"
Bonk. Bonk.
Dread turned quickly, scowling at the boy. "Knock it off. Ye couldn't beat me if ye tried."
"Then prove it!" Z bonked him on the forehead, sending his hat askew. "C'mon! Show me whatcha got!"
Dread uttered a soft 'tch' before turning, looking over at Gawain and Sinbad. "Are either of ye gonna get involved in this?"
The other two exchanged a glance and shook their heads.
"Nope," they said, almost in unison.
"He seems to want to play with you," Sinbad said, that smile back.
Gawain nodded. "You should humor the boy. Unless you're afraid he actually would best you."
Dread puffed his chest out. It was common knowledge that the best way to get Dread–hell, to get any Knux–to do something is to challenge his pride. The pirate scowled at the two, before gripping the hilt of his cutlass tightly.
Meanwhile, Z continued his assault.
Bonk. Bonk. Bonk bonk bonk bonkbonkbonkbonkbonk
With a growl, Dread whirled around, snatching the tube from Z's hand and returning the bonk to the boy's head.
"There. Ye're unarmed. I win."
Without a word, Yunuen handed Z the tube he'd been holding. The young boy smiled, gripping the long 'weapon' with both hands.
A smile curled Dread's lips, and he sheathed his cutlass.
"All right, lad," he said, lowering himself to a battle stance. "Ye want t’ fight? Bring it."
Z attacked, swinging his 'sword' wide and wild, and Dread easily blocked each attempted strike. He let the boy push him back, studying the little echidna's form and picking out his weaknesses. The pirate tucked one arm behind his back, moving and parrying with the practiced ease of a lifetime of swordplay.
It didn't take long for Z to tire himself out, and he eventually stopped, breathing hard and letting his weapon droop before him.
"Not bad, lad," Dread said, that familiar smirk on his lips. "But I can do better."
The others exchanged an uneasy glance. Was he going to take this too far? Too seriously? Z just wanted to play—was Dread going to taint the game by being, well, him?
Dread rounded Z, watching the boy like a shark would a dying fish. Gawain and Sinbad exchanged another look, and a silent agreement moved between them. If Dread took it too far, they'd step in.
After a moment, Z regained his breath and Dread moved in. He swung his tube in short arcs, but Gawain and Sinbad noticed that the pirate wasn't moving as quickly as he otherwise could. His swings were also controlled, and to their expert eyes, they caught that he was giving Z a chance to counter his strikes.
Dread wasn't 'battling' Z to win. He was teaching the boy to fight.
"Don't swing from the shoulder, swing from the elbow," he said, giving the boy a quick bonk in the side. "Don't leave yerself open to a side attack. That's it. Good."
The two traded swings for a moment, and Dread backed off when Z seemed winded.
"Keep yer sword up, lad." Dread bonked Z on the top of the head. "Always keep yer sword ready t' block."
The two kept at it for a few more minutes, and in that amount of time Z picked up a few things that made Dread smile. The kid was a fast learner, even if his compromised body meant he didn't have the strength to keep it up for long. When they paused again, Dread moved closer and gave Z a little bow.
"Ye're a fine opponent, L’il Z," he said, his gold tooth glinting as he smiled. "A quick learner. With a little more training, ye'd be almost as good as me, I'd wager!"
A mischievous look passed over his face then, and he leaned closer to the boy.
"But ye know what be better than fighting against each other?"
Little Z looked up, his eyes wide. "What?"
Dread uttered a short laugh, moving to Z's side and holding his tube before him in a battle stance.
"Fighting side-by-side!" he bellowed, and jumped forward to bonk Gawain on the head. "Come, lad! Let us take down the rest o' these scallywags together!"
Z laughed and took off after Sinbad. Gawain raced toward Metzli to snag a cardboard tube of his own, and quickly engaged Dread in a battle of the ages, if the battle of the ages were being fought with rolled up pieces of cardboard.
Soon all present Knuckles had a tube in hand, and a chorus of hollow bonks echoed throughout the Sanctuary.
Some time later, Maddie and Callie walked through their portal, with Wachowski in tow. All three stopped and stared at the scene before them.
Every Knux, even the more stoic ones who tried to keep their aura of seriousness and duty, were absolutely pelting each other with cardboard tubes.
The women exchanged a glance.
Maddie shook her head. "What the . . ."
"I don't know," Cal said, pulling out her phone. "But I'm recording it. This is too good of a blackmail opportunity to let pass."
Little Z rushed over and grabbed Wachowski's hand. "C'mon! We need you on our team!"
The older echidna shook his head, a look of confusion on his face. "I . . . I don't think--"
"Come on!" Z begged, yanking the older boy's arm. "We can't let Gawain's team win!"
Wachowski cast a quick look to the women, who both nodded and tilted their heads toward the chaos happening before them. With a sigh, Wachowski nodded, a look of too-serious determination on his face.
"We will be victorious!" he cried as he lifted Z and tucked the boy under his arm like a football. "Our battle will be one of legend!"
It wasn't long before Callie and Maddie were hauled into the fight, and their height advantage meant they were sought after members of various groups. The teams shifted and blended, gaining and losing members almost too quickly to keep track.
At one point Callie snatched Dread's hat, and the game shifted to one of an altered 'capture the flag'. At first Dread wasn't too thrilled with this, but he soon came around and was leading a mini army to retrieve his precious hat.
It wasn't clear how long this game of 'Calvinball' went on, as time moved differently in the Sanctuary. Various other Knuckles came and went during the battle--Boom was really confused at first, but quickly came around when Callie hauled him to her side--and after a time, the game played itself out, and they all sat on the floor, catching their breath.
Little Z had crawled into Maddie's lap, utterly exhausted from the play. She absently caressed the boy's head, and he snuggled closer, a soft purr rumbling in his chest.
Dread gave Callie a little nudge. "Me hat, if you would, lass?"
Callie smiled and reached up to readjust it on her head. "Aw, but I'm liking it. Think it looks better on me, anyway. Maybe I'll start my new life as a pirate. Callie the Red. Whadda ya think?"
Dread snickered. "I think ye're not cut out for pirate life."
"Oh? And how could you know that?"
"Ye can't swim. Or sail. Or fight."
A pause. "Details, details." She plopped the hat back on his head. "Needs a good cleaning anyway."
What's a Blue Daisy Mean? (Sonic x Amy)
I saw this post by Junichi Kanemaru (voice of Sonic) where Taeko Kawata (voice of Amy) gifted him a blue daisy with a cute note in-character. Even though the roles are reversed, I just wrote it naturally as it came to my mind. It's not proofread, so there may be some mistakes in punctuation. I'm sorry in advance.
“Augh! Sonic, I just don’t get you sometimes!” “What’s there to get?” Amy couldn’t help but let out an exasperated sigh as she slapped him on his shoulder. “You not only called me out here in the middle of nowhere, but you rush by doing your boost thing once, twice, three times, hand me a flower – a blue daisy for that matter – and then you claim we aren’t on a date?”
She looked away from him as they walked, trying to control her breathing so she wouldn’t crumple the flower’s stem in her hands from her frustration.
“What am I supposed to think about that? That we’re still just friends?” Sonic sniffed and rubbed his nose to soothe the itch, his blue quills jostling with the slight breeze. “Is there something wrong with being my friend?” He looked over at her, eyes half-lidded and a coquettish smile on his face, “I think you ought to be grateful I’m not running away from you like I used to.” “So you admit you did it on purpose?” “Yeah.” “Just to mess with me?” “Yep!” “And you somehow don’t think that’s a problem?” “Not in particular, no.” Crunch. The grass gave way to Sonic’s weight as he suddenly sat down, causing Amy to nearly jump out of her own skin from the unexpected shock. “Sonic!” She turned to look at him, “What is it now?” With a loud, toothy yawn, Sonic began to snore loudly in faux-sleep. His tan chest heaved up and down in an exaggerated manner, body so unnaturally stiff you’d think he was a corpse being reanimated by the forces of nature. “Sonic,” Amy said in a stern voice, her shadow blanketing over him as the sunlight hit her bare back, “I’m not in the mood to play around.” “Who said I was playing?” Sonic countered, “I’m trying to sleep – it’s exhausting having to deal with people all day, you know?” “You barely talk to anyone outside of PR speak!” “I talk to Tails!” “He’s your little brother! Of course you’re gonna talk to him! You live in the same house!” Opening one eye, he gave a toothy grin before sighing and rolling over onto his stomach dramatically, “Ah, and what an unfortunate circumstance that is!” Crunch crunch. So she was going to walk away and pout this time, huh? “You know, I’m surprised you’re not offering your house to me,” Sonic chided, holding himself up with his elbows, “The old Amy would have jumped at the opportunity to share a room with me.” “Not true,” She placed the daisy behind her ear, already tired of holding it, “Even back then, I would have had you sleep on the couch. I was infatuated with you, but not your wet fur smell.” “It’s gritty! It’s natural! If anything, you’re weird for smelling like strawberries all the time!”
“You really don’t like strawberries, do you?”
“I ate one that was a slug motel when I was a kid,” An involuntary shiver caused him to jostle and assume a sitting position, “Been grossed out by them ever since.”
She turned suddenly on her heel, nearly slipping as the wet dirt shifted with her, “And you didn’t think to tell me?!?”
“You obviously like them, so no, I wasn’t gonna.”
“But that’s just terrible! I was here enjoying myself, thinking I smell great, and now you’re telling me I reminded you of when you ate slugs by accident as a kid! Why wouldn’t you just tell me to my face that I was gross!”
“Because you aren’t gross,” He corrected, “Strawberries are gross.”
She walked over to him and crouched down on the balls of her toes, wincing as she tried her hardest not to get her dress covered in dirt. Before she could think too hard about it, though, Sonic had sat her down by the trunk of a tree, disorienting her as she felt her back hit the tree with a sudden thud.
“You know, if I had known you were so clumsy, I wouldn’t have had your face printed on my bedroom rug.”
“Oh really?”
“...Okay, maybe I would have. What’s this about me not being gross then?”
“Every hero needs an admiring fan… I’ve got a natural charisma, so you chasing me around was never off-putting. The sudden back-breaking hugs were, yeah, but I never minded seeing you.”
“I’d mind seeing me! I was so insecure that you had forgotten me, after I got a makeover and everything…” She pursed her lips, flattening down her quills which had been unruly from the humid summer air.
“Forget you? Pssh, nah!” Subtly, he put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer so she was leaning on his chest, “I was a bit confused since I didn’t recognize you with the new look, but no one could ever forget a voice like yours going ‘SONIC!’”
“Sonic!”
He started laughing as she pulled away from him, the loud, raucous sounds dying down into snide chuckles as her peachy-pale muzzle glowed pink like the rest of her.
“You’re the worst person ever! You don’t deserve to be called a hero! Jerk! Creep!”
She began to punch him lightly on his head, his ears folding down as he quickly started to laugh again. A light huff signified the pink hedgehog was done with her onslaught of blows, and so she assumed her position next to him as she had, her arms crossed as she readjusted the blue daisy that was inches from Sonic’s nose.
“Do you know what a blue daisy means, by the way?”
“I know blue flowers usually mean something impossible. I’m just grateful you didn’t pick a rose.”
“So you read up on flower language too? Great! Then I guess I don’t have to explain what it means.”
With that, he took the flower from her hair and began to fan out its petals with his fingers, gloved cotton scratching against the delicate daisy as Amy looked over with an apprehensive glance.
“... This isn’t your way of rejecting me, is it? I’d rather you just tell me directly if I’m causing an issue.”
“Nope,” Sonic kept his gaze forward, his fingers still fanning out the petals, “I’m guessing you haven’t read about blue daisies in any of the books you bought from the department store.”
“Sonic, I…” She sighs, “No, they don’t have a chapter on blue flowers in any commonly sold book.”
“Figured. Well, if you need to know what this means, it means good health and a long life! If you ever stopped following me, I’d think the worst had happened to you, Amy.”
Shock. She didn’t really know how to reply to that, so she didn’t.
“I’ve never known you to be insecure about your feelings. I can’t really say everything that’s really on my mind – I’m very critical of my thoughts and my surroundings – so I’m surprised you’d think I’m bothered by you being around me.”
She bit her lip and looked away from him, placing her hands in her lap as she let him keep talking.
“Amy, I’m a pretty spontaneous person. Tails has always been living alone just like me, so I’m not too worried if Eggman shows up at his house, since it’s my house. But you? You’re just a regular girl. You live in an apartment and you buy groceries, for crying out loud! Tails buys groceries, yeah, but he does it in a mech-turned-race-car. Even Rouge doesn’t entirely adjust to human life like you do.”
“So you’re just saying you pity me because I’m just a city girl? Is that it, Sonic?”
“Hey, don’t get snappy! I’m not finished!” He chided her, one hand held up to act as a barrier from her grit teeth.
“I’m saying you’re really strong despite being a city girl, Amy. I don’t wanna disrupt your life any more than I already have. Little Planet, I just thought you were an annoying groupie - I’ve dealt with my fair share of those… but maybe I was wrong about it.”
She looked up at him as he began to rise from the tree trunk’s roots, carefully placing the daisy behind her ear as she felt her cheeks heat up all over again.
“Look, I’m not the type of guy to be in a relationship now,” She could only see his back as he began to walk away from her, “But that doesn’t mean I’m entirely opposed to the idea.”
Before she could get up or even say anything, he was gone. It was like she had just walked herself to this field alone, the only real indication he had been there being the blue daisy behind her ear.
She groaned in frustration as she balled her fists and began to stomp her feet in the dirt.
“Sonic, I really, really don’t understand you!”
Desperation
Part 1?
Something was wrong. Eggman could tell Something was wrong. That giant moon had devolved into dust but they hadn’t returned yet. His daughter and that blue rodent were still up there. The egg-shaped doctor had lost sight of the golden glow he had been tracking fixedly since they had zoomed into the upper atmosphere together.
Worse still, Sonics friend had come crawling out of cyberspace not soon after. They seemed dazed. And from the way they were whining, like the children they were, they were aching all over.
“What’s happening?” Amy squeaked clutching her head.
“A powerful energy forcibly removed us from cyberspace and severed our connection with Sonic!” Tails informed, massaging his temples.
“English Tails!” Knuckles shouted, clearly recoiling from whatever pain he was in.
“Something pushed us out of cyberspace and Sonic might be in danger!” Tails grumbled back.
Knuckles frowned; he turned immediately jumping on the defensive when he saw Eggman approach. “What’s going on Eggman?” Knuckles demanded, razing his fists, “Is this your doing?”
“Calm down,” Eggman tisked, “Sage and that supersonic rat went to defeat that planet up there,” he pointed to the sky.
“But somethings gone wrong,”
“What?” knuckles demanded.
“I know just as much as you do about that, unfortunately,” he snarled.
Eggman turned to the only member of the trio with any brains. “You, Miles, tell me what you know,”
“You seem awfully concerned.”
“Of course, I’m concerned, Fox! My dau- my life is at stake,” he stumbled. “and I need to know as much as I can NOW!”
i wonder how the sun feels when it falls // sonknux
word count 2489 - ao3 link
summary:
For his entire life, Knuckles had been alone. It was his fate-he was the last echidna, after all, and he enjoyed his solitary lifestyle, but…
It hurt, sometimes. And, in his typical fashion, Sonic was always there to help alleviate that age-old pain, words light and airy, smile carefree as the wind, breathless and sweaty as they fought in the light of the moon, and afterward picking blueberries and tossing them at each other, building a campfire and making s’mores, laughing at the stickiness of a melted marshmallow stuck in blue quills.
enjoy,,, theyre freaks <3
-
Knuckles could barely remember a time when he didn’t love Sonic.
He’d loved him for as long as he knew what the word meant, and in every sense of it–they were rivals, friends, and somehow so, so much more. From the very beginning, the blue hedgehog had been different; the first of his enemies that actually put up a fight, that threatened his way of living first by shattering his world and then by rebuilding it, sweeping him into a whirlwind of taunts and laughter and too-warm smiles. Sonic got on his nerves in the best way possible, giving him an outlet for everything he struggled to express in words, a punching bag that fought back. He was infuriatingly stubborn–he never gave up, never left, not even after Knuckles got tricked and fought against him for the umpteenth time. It was a dance they’d perfected, stubbornly insisting on getting in each other’s way just to hear the other’s infuriated scoff, to feel the rush of battle as they sparred with words and fists, genuine smiles.
For his entire life, Knuckles had been alone. It was his fate-he was the last echidna, after all, and he enjoyed his solitary lifestyle, but…
It hurt, sometimes. And, in his typical fashion, Sonic was always there to help alleviate that age-old pain, words light and airy, smile carefree as the wind, breathless and sweaty as they fought in the light of the moon, and afterward picking blueberries and tossing them at each other, building a campfire and making s’mores, laughing at the stickiness of a melted marshmallow stuck in blue quills. Sonic fell asleep curled next to Knuckles, and carefully a bulky hand snaked around his shoulders, pulling him closer, leaning into each other. He wasn’t built to handle delicate things, and while Sonic was usually anything but, now…
He trusted Knuckles. He was vulnerable around him, even after everything they’d been through. Knuckles swallowed, realizing that without noticing, he’d let his defenses down, too.
He was terrible at reading body language. It was a language he didn’t speak, could barely understand, let alone translate. But even he noticed the way Sonic stumbled around Ares island, limping and smiling, a hand flickering with cyber-corruption. The moon was high above, mirroring the crescent on Knuckles’ chest. He wondered how many sleepless nights he’d had. Less than Sonic, for sure.
A flicker. He yelped, spinning around, and there she was–that mysterious girl that had trapped him, reduced him to this. He let out a low growl, but she was floating out of reach, and Sonic still insisted that he shouldn’t fight her. Reluctantly, he lowered his fists, eyeing her warily.
“You care for him,” she noted, gazing at the blue hedgehog in the distance, sparring with one of the many robots littering the desert island. “Why?”
“What do you mean?” Knuckles scoffed. “He’s my friend. Of course I care about him.”
“You argue,” she pointed out, still staring at Sonic’s figure, illuminated in the moonlight. “You don’t see eye to eye, you fight constantly. You claim that you’re friends, yet there’s this odd tension between you. It’s perplexing.”
“Yeah, we’re rivals. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends, too.” Knuckles followed her gaze. A laugh found his ears, carried by the wind. “He annoys me, but I admire him. He’s strong, fast… he’s saved me more times than I can count.” He let out a small laugh. “And he depends on me, too. He’d never admit it, but he’d be lost without me.”
The girl hummed. “He’s a confusing specimen, isn’t he? Almost a shame that he has to die.”
Knuckles snorted. “You can try to kill him. I have too. He’s not going to lose. No matter what. I know him.”
He turned back and she was gone. Letting out a sigh, he vanished and flickered back into existence next to Sonic. Somehow, looking at his drooping eyelids, his words and faith in his rival seemed unfounded.
“It’s dark,” he commented, not knowing quite what to say. “You seem tired.”
Sonic brushed him off, waving a hand. “Psh. I’m fine, Knux. If anything, you seem like you’re struggling to keep up. Did I wear you out?” he teased, instinctively elbowing him. His arm fizzled through flesh, flickering in and out of existence, a constant reminder of the predicament they were in, the state Knuckles trusted Sonic with his life to help him escape.
“Hardly,” he snorted. “But I’m not sure I trust you to take down that titan while you look like you’re about to collapse.”
“Please.” Sonic yawned. “I could take that hunk of junk down in my sleep. ”
“It almost blew you up yesterday.”
“That’s beside the point.”
“I–” Knuckles bit back his concern, turning away. “Fine. Just… be careful, ok?”
“Please.” Sonic laughed, far too strained. “Careful? Where’s the fun in that?”
-
He was limp, frozen in place, flickering and corrupted. Knuckles mirrored him, trembling at the sight. Amy let out a cry, running to Sonic, and he tried to force himself to do the same but he couldn’t move , paralyzed by shock, dread, the world spinning so much he barely noticed the ground that felt solid at his feet.
“What happened to him?” He asked, head spinning, and this all felt like a scene from one of those horror movies Rouge loved to watch with him, something that couldn’t be real, there was no way, but there Sonic was, paralyzed, grinning, ever upbeat, the spitting image of the optimistic hero, the light of hope, snuffed out.
“He took on so much cyber energy,” Tails’ voice was soft, miserable, almost shrouded in disbelief. “It… it corrupted him.”
“Meaning?” His ears were ringing.
“He’s stuck between realities. He’s in limbo. He… he lost.”
No. There was a lump in his throat, forcing its way out in the form of a tiny, choked cry, finally finding the strength to stumble forward. It was all blurry except for him, a frozen statue, eyes open, flesh blackened and flickering that vile red, corrupted through and through, and, of course, the small, pained grin on his face. His hand found a once-blue shoulder and didn’t pass through it. He forced back a sob. He can’t be dead. He can’t–
He didn’t lose. There’s no way.
Eggman was cackling(he was here, of course he was here), but it was faint background noise, deafened by the ringing in his ears, and Sonic wasn’t breathing, Chaos, he wasn’t breathing –
“Wake up,” he breathed, barely audible, shaking Sonic’s shoulders, and he was stone-cold. “Please. You have to wake up. You can’t--”
A rumble, booming ominously in the distance, shaking the very ground below his feet. Knuckles pulled away, jolted back to reality, looking around frantically. Whoever did this to him is going to pay, he thought, grim. His light of hope had been snuffed out, but what could he do except fight on? It was all he knew how to do anyway. Hope was a weak drug compared to vengeance.
“Since time immemorial I have languished here. Now, the locks are broken. I shall tear down the walls between dimensions and consume all.”
Knuckles growled, clenching his fists and stepping forward, mouth parting to shout his defiance to the stars, standing between it and the fallen celestial next to him. Eggman was panicking, shouting something about mobilizing the Egg Fleet, but it was helpless. If Sonic had lost, what chance did any of them have of winning? A broken record of his own hopeless concerns, data backing up the inevitable conclusion, the girl he’d seen earlier gripped Eggman’s shoulder, shaking it frantically, eyes flicking from Knuckles to Sonic to the sky and back again. “It won’t be enough! It triumphed over the Ancients’ technology! My simulations show a success rate of zero percent!”
Of course, Knuckles thought, grim, blood running cold, turning back to look at Sonic again. His eyes were no longer green, consumed by that sickening, flickering, lifeless red. He stepped back, still in disbelief, looking down at his now-solid hands. He sacrificed himself for us. You selfless idiot.
“No!” Tails’ voice cut through the daze, drawing his eyes to him. His face, screwed in determination despite the tears brimming in his eyes, somehow mirrored his brother’s in a way that tore and shredded at Knuckles’ heart, tugging at his heartstrings. Things will never be the same again, will they? “Sonic worked too hard for us to give up now. Those visions we saw… we can drive back the corruption and bring him back!”
Knuckles inhaled, gaze traveling from his hands, no longer flickering, to the corrupted hero. Of course. When he freed me, the energy keeping me prisoner went into him. A small, sad smile found its way to his muzzle. We’ll see who’s self-sacrificing now, you bastard. You’ve saved me time and time again, it’s time to return the favor.
His hand found Tails’, Amy grasping his other fist as if her life depended on it. Her voice was shaky, full of emotion that Knuckles wished he knew how to express. “Sonic, you still have love to share with this world, too!”
“Sonic, I want you to see the hero I become!” Tails cried, squeezing Knuckles’ hand tightly. The world was beginning to hum, echoing in his ears. He stepped closer to his friend--no, so much more, that warmth in his chest, that faded from enemies to rivals to friends to whatever they had been, could be if this only worked. He supposed that he could call that love. Whatever it takes.
“Sonic.” His voice was far shakier than he would have liked. “We’re even after this, ha!”
And everything flickered to black.
-
 “You look tired,” Sonic commented, pushing through the brush as he followed Knuckles through his island. Knuckles snorted, laden with something… more. “You’re one to talk.”
“Nah.” Sonic shrugged, and though Knuckles was unsure if his grin was real or not, it still made his heart shiver and pound in his chest. “I’m more awake than ever after punching through that planet. Eclipse cannon who, am I right? At least I finished the job.”
Both paused, a bitter taste spreading across Knuckles’ tongue. It wasn’t just Sonic that had sacrificed in the face of the End. The girl–no, her name was Sage –had given everything she never had and something more.
“Hey,” Sonic murmured, breaking the silence, leaning down to scoop a sad-looking chao off of the ground. “You alright?”
“I’ve been away for a while. I guess they’ve grown dependent on me to shake the trees for them.” Knuckles absentmindedly punched the trunk of a tree beside him, catching the fruit that fell and handing it to the chao. “Here you go, little guy.”
The chao chirped happily, curling closer to Sonic as it munched on the triangle fruit, seemingly content to remain in the hero’s arms. This time, his smile was genuine–Knuckles was sure of it, and it made his head spin, the tiny laugh that Sonic let out. His head was spinning in a good way this time, like he was sliding down a hill, leaping into a pile of leaves, freefalling as far as he could before gliding just inches above the seaspray.
“Sonic?”
“Mhm?” The hedgehog turned, eyes glimmering with joy as he scratched the chao on the belly.
“I–” he paused, trying to find the right words, and giving up when he realized he never would, there would never be a way to encapsulate the way Sonic made him feel, but he’d try anyway. Funny how losing him, even if just for a moment, made everything feel so much more temporary and simultaneously shoved it into place. “I’m glad you’re here. I’m glad that you’re alive.”
Sonic laughed, joyful and free and real . “Wow, thanks for the sentiment,” he joked, playfully elbowing Knuckles, careful not to disturb the chao that had clambered onto his shoulder.
“No.” Knuckles looked away. Why were his cheeks burning? “Sonic, when you got corrupted, I–I guess it made me realize how much I need you, how much I care about you as… well, as more than just a rival or a friend. More than I thought. You’re just so… so free, and yet you care so much, even though you don’t have to. You sacrifice so much not just for your friends, but for your enemies, for people you’ll never meet. So… thank you, I guess.” He bit his lip. “...Don’t make me say it again, you know how I am with feelings–”
Sonic swallowed his yelp of surprise, hands suddenly clinging to his dreads, pulling him close, somehow sweet and frantic all at once, and oh.
Oh.
That’s what that was.
He began to pull away but Knuckles pulled him closer, deepening the kiss, hands coming to cup his grip on his dreads, and suddenly he was being shoved backwards, pressed against the trunk of the tree he’d just punched to give the chao fruit. Sonic hummed against his lips, parting for just a second before diving in again, clinging to Knuckles as if his life depended on it, not the other way around. “I love you too,” he murmured against his lips, and Knuckles shuddered, refusing to let the kiss end. It didn’t feel real but it somehow felt so, so right , as if he’d been waiting for this his entire life without realizing it, and maybe he had been, maybe that was what he’d been missing all this time. It was like he was walking on a cloud, Sonic pulling him up among the stars, outshining all of them with the way he unraveled Knuckles, piece by piece, delicately yet completely pulling him apart and cradling him close. He was trembling like a leaf, Knuckles realized, and suddenly they were falling.
They separated with a gasp, Sonic tumbling to the ground and swearing as he lost his balance, Knuckles following with a yelp. In an instant, they were a tangled pile of limbs and fur on the forest floor, stunned into silence before Sonic laughed, raspy and real .
“You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to do that,” he admitted. Knuckles scoffed. “What, you waited ?” he teased. “Do I know you?”
The chao let out a whine and Sonic winced, turning to look at it, sitting grumpily on the floor with crossed arms and an upturned nose. “Sorry, little guy. Didn’t mean to drop you.” It peeped, frustrated, and Knuckles sighed in contentment, holding out a bulky hand for it to climb into and pulling it close. “Really Sonic, have more respect for the wildlife,” he scolded.
Sonic sniffed, turning up his nose. “I had more important business to take care of.” Knuckles growled playfully, capturing him again.
For request: tails (or nine) noticing sonic has a concussion while hes running around and fighting?
Okay, you did say Tails or Nine but I took the latter and ran with it, even though I’m a bit unsure about whether I can write him correctly. Doesn’t hurt to try, I guess.
Thank you for the request!! Hope you like this <3 (turned out to be way longer than I expected but that's a good sign actually :) )
He shouldn’t have been out here; it was wrong and he didn’t like it one bit. He was exposed, he felt vulnerable, he knew this was definitely not a safe tactic in order to survive in the city, yet he kept on fighting, the gun on his hand shooting out bullets faster than the wind as they all pierced through their targets successfully.
Beside him, that blue hedgehog, who had managed to draw attention to them (despite warning him not to) seemed to enjoy every - spin attack he called them? – that he landed on the robots, smashing them to pieces with ease as though he wasn’t running at supersonic speeds. This power, was it actually his? It was raw, very impressive and potentially hazardous, especially in the wrong hands, but his control over it showed how much capable and experienced he was.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the hedgehog, who he was, what he was, how he got here, why he got here out of any place he could have travelled to.
And how ever since his arrival he effectively changed everything about this city.
Everything he knew about this city.
The Chaos Council never had any trouble eliminating their opponents. In fact, they never used these specifically designed battle robots they were mass producing to begin with because they didn’t need to. Whatever resistance the citizens had hopelessly brought to life, clearly wasn’t enough to fight against the conquerors and creators of this damned city.
So, one hedgehog was all it took to change fate, to spark hope?
He would rather die than admit it out loud but the reckless speedster had sparked the tiniest bit of hope inside of him. What he wouldn’t give to live in a huge and not polluted valley, surrounded by trees and grass and birds…To have friends, to be loved and cared for and-
His eyes flicked to Sonic just in time to witness him jump on a bigger mech this time. He wished he had a hero, someone to look up to, someone who would have protected him when he needed him the most, just like the Nine Sonic knew. He scrunched his nose as he tried to remember what he had called him; it wasn’t too hard though. Tails. It sounded like a dream; too good to be true. And Nine was certain it would be impossible for him to live the life he wanted to, the one he deserved to live.
A chuckle escaped him. “That’s just as unlikely as a fox flying.”
Still, he couldn’t help but fight alongside Sonic, his newly found hope urging him to move forward and search for the life he’d always wanted. Maybe supporting him would help him in the long run as well. Just maybe.
He had been ignoring all of Sonic’s remarks so far, all the: “You’re doing great, Nine!”, “Nice shot, Nin- is that a fucking gun?”, (he had rolled his eyes at that) “Keep it up, their forces are weakening!”, let alone all the witty ones directed to the enemies. There were too many to keep count of.
They were actually doing pretty well and Nine was surprised they made it this far without being captured by any of the bots. But it seemed like all of their efforts were futile as a new machine made its appearance in the battlefield: the egg baby robot.
“Hey, who invited the party pooper?” Sonic’s smug grin was plastered on his face as he turned around to look at Nine, pointing at the massive robot behind him. “Get it? Because it’s a bab-” He never got the chance to finish his joke, he was cut off by his own yelling as the mech had taken ahold of him and was squeezing him inside of its palm.
Nine had reached for him but wasn’t able to get him out of harms way in time. “Fuck.” He growled as he took aim, a new plan forming in his head as he started shooting at the robot’s feet. His attacks didn’t change a thing, Sonic was still wiggling inside of the mech’s grasp, brushing off the incoming bullets like they were made of paper.
“So, uh,” what was the idiot doing, talking to the baby when he was clearly trying to make a diversion, like any smart person would, “still sore about my butt kicking?”. He could hear the nervousness in his voice, despite the confidence his face was emitting, him trying to stall was his final resort.
Too bad it didn’t help at all.
The mech took a step forward as it shifted its entire weight to its arm, the one holding the helpless hero, despite his protests.
Everything that followed happened very fast.
Nine could only watch as Sonic was sent flying backwards, unable to do anything but wait for his fall which was interrupted by hitting his head on a pole. Hard.
“Sonic!” Nine rushed to him, an unexplainable force pushing him towards his direction. Using his metallic tails as a shield against the robot’s attacks, he was soon by Sonic’s side.
“Ughh, my head hurts.” So, he was in pain? And hadn’t acknowledged his presence next to him. Not good. Maybe if they got out of there, just in case they found a safe place he would be able to help. Just a tiny bit though, he was no doctor, despite his high intelligence. He kept his eyes on him, noting how he was hardly standing on his feet so he easily concluded that the hedgehog was in no place to keep on fighting.
“Sonic?” addressing him once more seemed to do the trick as Sonic turned around to face Nine, forcing a smile as soon as they looked at each other. “You need medical aid.”
“Ha! Me? I’m fine buddy!” he said, clearly lying. He kept losing balance and seemed way out of it. Nine was sure that if he held three fingers up, he wouldn’t be able to tell how many they actually were but he refrained from trying that and so, he remained justifiably not convinced.
But why was he so…worried?
Right. “Sonic you cannot fight like that, you’ll endanger us getting captured.” It was for the mission and for the sake of staying (relatively) safe in this hell of a city. They didn’t have the luxury to get caught by the Chaos Council, it would only cause troubles he did not really want to deal with at the moment. Yeah, for…for the mission.
“What you see is what you get!” Sonic stated (what exactly did that mean?!) as he curled himself into a ball and readied his spin attack, locking on his target. Which he missed by a large margin. How hard did he hit his head anyway?
Nine would not just stand there and watch the so-called fastest thing alive get up and try to punch the robot just to fall back on the ground without even having completed his poor attempt. Running as fast as his tails allowed him to, he was (once again) headed towards Sonic. But a gasp that escaped him made him stop dead on his tracks, as he watched the claw of the robot on its way to smash its opponent, possibly ending him forever.
Two seconds was all it took for him to run, jump, take Sonic and let his seven fully functional tails carry him as he turned around, taking aim and shooting at the cockpit with whatever ammo he had left, still moving backwards. That didn’t immobilize the enemy though and Nine quickly reloaded his gun. The next bullets that he shot found their target with ease just like the previous ones. Only this time, paint was splattered across the cockpit, blocking the baby’s eyesight.
He grinned. He knew paint balls would come of use one day.
He used a smoke bomb to completely rule out the chance they would be found. At least for a while. It would save them some time, all the time he needed to make sure Sonic is okay.
After a lot of running and taking turns, Nine found a narrow road where no cameras were detected. They’d be safe. They should return to his lab however, as soon as possible, yet without being followed.
He let Sonic on the ground, slowly and careful not to hurt him any further or make his current situation worse. He kneeled beside him, taking his head on his hands ready to examine him. That is until the hedgehog opened his eyes and looked at him with the most loving and caring expression he’d ever witnessed. He was surprised, conflicted, in pain. Yet, he found himself yearning for more.
“Heh, Tails, what are you doing bud?”
Tails. Of course. He should have expected it. “I’m Nine. Get it right.” he scoffed, disappointed in himself for believing someone would smile at a creep like him, someone would care about him. “Now stay still, I need to check your injuries.”
“Aww, Nine, you’re worried about me!”
“No, I’m not!”
“Yes, you are.”
“No, I’m n- and stop getting on my nerves or I’m gonna hit you.”
He was hoping Sonic was still feeling a bit dizzy (as it seemed like he was before) to save himself from the embarrassment of someone else noticing his reddened cheeks. Ignoring Sonic’s smug smile, he kept on searching for any serious injuries while simultaneously trying very hard not to lose focus.
“Just as I expected”, Nine sighed, mostly out of relief for breaking the deafening silence between them, “you have a concussion.”
He was waiting to see a surprised look on his face, a concerned one even but that wasn’t the case. “Pftt, that’s nothing, I’ve dealt with it before.” Sonic got up, a beaming grin appearing on his muzzle but faltering as soon as he lost balance. Despite playing it off as him posing - when he was actually supporting himself on the wall to not fall down- Nine was no idiot and was having none of his bullshit.
“Since you’ve dealt with this before as you say,” he got up, holding Sonic by his shoulders and pushing him back on the ground, forcing him to sit down, “you might also know how it should be treated.” His voice was even and calm, dangerously calm, partly because he knew that Sonic’s answer wouldn’t be one that he’d like.
“Chili dogs and kicking robot ass?” And, there it was, his innocent looking (which was also a nervous one according to Nine’s judgement) smile did not help at all.
“No.” It was his turn to smile, Sonic’s frame shrinking slightly, probably afraid of what he knew he would hear next. “Resting for three days.”
The following reaction was most definitely an unexpected one for the young fox. An overexaggerated gasp and a thud later, the hedgehog sat up once more. “Please, please, please, you can’t do this to me. I-” he paused, looking away from his eyes for a brief moment, “I need to save my friends.”
Nine wasn’t sure if he felt confused, amazed or jealous. How dumb was he to prefer neglecting his health in favor of his friends? How much did he care about them? “Listen, you’re not saving anyone in your condition.” He’d help him find them. But not for Sonic! He was sure he would gain something from that and that’s all he cared about; himself. “You will in fact put the whole city in danger if you act recklessly.” Not that he cared about the city, he just happened to be one of the people who lived in it.
Sonic crossed his arms and pouted, acting like a bratty little child wouldn’t work on Nine.
“Okay, how about,” alright, it might have worked actually, “two days?”
“One.”
“One? That’s just exploiting my kindness.”
“One give or take.” He looked serious for the first time since he met him. “As I said, I’ve dealt with this before, one day should be enough.”
Nine seemed to consider it for a while but understood it was the best option he could have right now. “Alright, one day.” He extended his hand to Sonic. “Glad we agreed on that.”
Sonic eyed his hand, reluctantly taking it so he could stand up. “Yeah, but it doesn’t mean I will like it. Not running feels like hell to me.” He groaned as he leaned against Nine in an attempt to support himself.
Nine chuckled at that, using five of his tails to help him move forward, allowing Sonic to wrap an arm around his shoulder, not exactly unwelcoming to the touch. “I’m sure we’ll find something interesting for you in the lab.” He side-eyed him while looking at his watch to determine how far from his home they were.
“The way you say it, it makes me feel like you’ll be giving me lab equipment to test out.” He rolled his eyes, he really seemed to hate being used as a guinea pig and who wouldn’t? “FYI, I’m not a hamster ball guy.” They started moving forward, Sonic managing to walk beside Nine thanks to his tails.
“I don’t have one.”
“Oh, thank Chaos, I was seriously getting worried.”
Soft Comfort
Another bit of discord writing. Just a shortie, giving the boy some comfort when he needed it.
~~~~~
Knuckles held a hand to his side. His ribs hurt, his side hurt, his face hurt. But it was over. The fight had been a tough one—one of the more challenging he's had in a while—but it was finally, thankfully done.
Every breath sent a pain through his chest and down his side. Cracked rib or two, maybe. This big baddie—and oh how he hated when Sonic called them that—had been particularly dedicated. He, it, whatever the thing was could manipulate chaos, which made it all that harder to take down.
But they'd done it. He and Sonic and Tails and Amy had all banded together, using every ounce of their strength and focus and dedication to win. He glanced around himself and found the others in not much better shape than him. It had been a hard win. But a win, nonetheless.
Knuckles tried to take a step forward, and stumbled. His muscles felt like lead, body trembling from the adrenaline that still coursed through his veins. He'd overexerted himself, which was bad enough, but there was an underlying exhaustion affecting him too. When had he slept last? He couldn't remember. This big baddie—ugh, damnit Sonic—had sent chaos levels in a tizzy, and it had been all he could do to keep them balanced and safe. Which meant he hadn't slept all that much over the last . . . week? Felt like a lot longer.
A sound caught his attention and he turned. Amy was running toward him, her face a mask of worry. He tried to wave her away, to tell her he was fine, go check on the hedgehog or fox instead, but his body refused to listen to his commands. She was on him in a heartbeat, cupping his muzzle in her hands.
Oh. Oh her hands were so soft.
She brought his face up so she could look at him, examine him and make sure he wasn't too injured, and he looked at her. Her mouth moved and he heard sounds as though she were speaking, but his head was foggy and he couldn't decipher the words. Couldn't pick them out or assign them meaning. That was okay. She was probably fussing over him, like she does all her friends. It was one thing he admired about her. She cared about everyone so much, and wasn't afraid to show it.
Knuckles looked at her, his violet eyes flicking over the different parts of her face. Her soft pink fur, her peach muzzle, her little nose that was strangely different from Sonic's even though they were both hedgehogs. Were female echidna snouts different than the male? He didn't think so, but it wasn't like he could really find out. Temple murals and drawings can only convey so much detail.
He blinked slowly as Amy ran her thumbs across his muzzle. Why was he thinking about snout shapes? His head felt so heavy. A warmth flowed over him, the soothing touch of chaos. The Master Emerald was reaching out, sending a calm wave over him now that the threat had been dealt with. Soothing his worries, easing his fears. She was safe. He could rest now.
A soft grunt left Knuckles' throat, and he sighed as he leaned forward, into Amy's touch. He worried she may pull away, startled by his movement, but instead she went to sit on her knees, adjusting her hold on him. His eye lids drooped lower, as her soft hands gently massaged the patch of fur between his eyes and up his forehead. She dragged her thumb up slowly, starting the circuit again once she reached the top of his head.
Knuckles' body relaxed, and he leaned forward, his arms moving almost of their own accord. They wrapped around Amy's waist, and he fell into her, resting his head in her lap as his eyes closed completely.
The danger done, the Emerald and planet safe, Knuckles the Echidna finally slept.
