The tea industry provides millions of people around the world with cups of tea in the morning. One of the biggest producers of tea, India, recognizes the importance of tea in its communities and as a commodity for commerce.

However, much of the working conditions for those within the tea industry still need much improvement. If you think this holiday was about drinking tea, well think again! International Tea Day is all about the tea workers and bringing civil rights into action. Let’s see how this holiday came to pass.

Do you love a good cup of tea? While International Tea Day can certainly involve paying homage to tea, we should pay homage to those working in the tea industry. The best way to do this is by helping to raise awareness regarding their working conditions so they can be improved.

History of International Tea Day

The International Tea Day campaign was launched in 2005 by the trade unions, small tea growers and civil society organizations in Asia and Africa to address the issues of living wages for workers and fair prices for small tea producers.

The International Tea Conference in New Delhi came out with an International Declaration on the rights of workers and small growers to help regulate uneven competition, land ownership, safety regulations, rights of women, social security and living wages. Another organization, The Tea Board of India, proposed International Tea Day in hopes of it becoming an official holiday to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

This was proposed by chairman Santosh Kumar Sarangi in 2015. According to the chairman, the proposal of India was supported by countries such as Canada, the United States, European Union, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Kenya, and Malawi. While the holiday doesn’t have official status, the goal of this holiday is to recognize the vulnerable situations that tea producers in India have with current living conditions and worker-related policies.

The day also focuses on deliberating on urgent issues such as residues, climate change, technology and trends on production and consumption in the tea industry. To observe this day, over 150 representatives from tea organizations gather and conduct a seminar to discuss the pervading problems the tea industry has as well as problems faced within their own country.

Not too long ago I ordered myself a few things from an international food website, bc sometimes I can get myself a treat. I get home and there’s one box of a size I expected, and another twice-as-big and twice-as-heavy box. I’m very confused. My dumb ass doesn’t think to look at the address or shipping slip until I’m halfway through unwrapping it. The second box is not my order, but is some other dude’s who doesn’t live even remotely near me.

Turns out the company doesn’t do returns at all, though.

I feel so bad because for it looks like someone was potentially planning a nice dinner and some other odds and ends.

What I don’t understand is how this made it here? It shipped out from New Jersey, and was destined for Georgia. I live in Bumfuck Nowhere, Southwestern USA. And why didn’t the postal people notice anywhere along the way?

Let’s see. The package included:

- five different kinds of pasta; one bucatini pack, one squadretti pack, one pantacce pack, one multicolor farfalle pack, and one calamarata pack

Hmm. Lexi seems like a Wendy’s girl. Dipping her fries into a frosty, drinking a strawberry lemonade on a summer day and splitting a 4 for 4 meal with Fez, a small cup of Chilli in the winter.

We all know Fez doesn’t fuck with McDonald’s… def could see Popeyes. As far as burger joints go, he’s prob more a local hole in the wall type, somewhere really rundown but has been in business since Kitty was like a teenager but the food positively SMACKS, definitely loves a good burger stand. As far as one more commercial, I’d say Carl’s Jr. (Hardy’s for all my non West Coast people) simply because it’s charbroiled but is constantly ranting to Lexi about how all the main burger chains have gone downhill since the 90’s and are lowkey kinda ass now and could never top the golden age of fast food while she good naturedly rolls her eyes. He won’t admit it to Lexi but a Jr. Bacon cheeseburger hits different after a long day at the Dairy and he might hit that Wendy’s drive thru every now & then after a shift and the evidence is mysteriously in the trash before he picks her up afterwards in the caddy 😉

Some ingredients can be found in Asian specific grocerers or ordered online (such as Sakura or black sesame sauce). Orange-ade, blueberry-ade, strawberry-ade, are a lot like lemonade and you can make those at home, too .
