Lex: Jonathan Kent is a good man, unlike my father...
Me: *holds his face so tenderly between my hands* baby ur so dumb..... the only difference between Kent and your dad is that he is a "traditional values" conservative and your dad is a mega corporate conservative. They're both right wing and hate you bc you're a soft hearted effeminate man and they want you to be either the personification of masculinity stereotypes or a heartless corporate mastermind. Do u understand what I'm saying?
Lex: but his son is so pretty...
Me: *sighs*

another interesting piece to the dichotomy between Clark and Lex is they both have their issues with letting people get close to them due to their own respective traumas, but it manifests in different, almost opposite ways, which imo ends up being their downfall
Lex obviously has this air of “I’m a Luthor, I’m secretive, I won’t let anyone close to me” that he’s developed from a combination of lionel’s fucked up parenting, and a life of keeping secrets to protect the people he cares about, but actually looking at his actions the idea that he’s secretive and closed off or whatever starts to feel like a facade. In practice (especially with Clark) Lex is so desperate for connection that he lets his walls down almost every chance he gets. Like if I recall correctly in the show he really doesn’t shy away from talking about his childhood trauma whenever Clark asks. Plus Lex is pretty honest throughout the show, especially to Clark. There’s several moments from the start where other characters THINK Lex is lying, but in the beginning it’s almost always Lex being scapegoated.
And I think the idea that he’s a closed off person that’s hard to reach isn’t just something he tries to present to the world, I think it’s also a lie lex tells himself to convince himself he has any sense of power over who he chooses to let in, because in a community where he IS constantly the scapegoat choosing to let people in and connect to them opens him up too way too much opportunity for disappointment and heart break, so he has to convince himself he’s able to stay disconnected and keep people at arm’s length, but in reality I really don’t think he’s that capable of keeping people out? Like if someone genuinely wants to connect with him I don’t think he has the power to stop himself from letting that happen at LEAST in the early seasons of the show
Clark on the other hand feels like the kind of guy who should be an open book, and in a lot of ways he is! he’s earnest and kind and can make friends with just about anybody, including the widely distrusted Lex Luthor, but he’s got a secret that he’s been told his whole life he has to guard at all costs for the sake of his survival. And his fears of ending up on a lab table tortured and experimented on are reasonable so you can’t really fault him for being dishonest with everyone. But Clark clearly doesn’t want to be this secretive aloof guy, he’s lonely and displaced, the sole survivor of a world he never knew. He’s similarly desperate to be this trustworthy, friendly guy, with deep relationships with the people in his life. So he tries to compromise and instead lets people in just enough for it to feel devastating when they put together that he’s undeniably lying to them.
It nearly ruins every one of Clark’s relationships at some point in the show, but ultimately his other relationships survive it, his relationship with Lex can’t
the real reason they’re “doomed by the narrative” is Lex is so desperate to connect with Clark, and Clark is incapable of ever fully letting that happen, even though he wanted to!! and in the same way Lex tries to be okay with their “incomplete” relationship because he wants to be understanding and doesn’t want to ruin his relationship with Clark but in the end he can’t do it either!!

Smallville clark is SO funny he just lies without reason sometimes and he's extremely petty and mean on occasion hes insanely forgiving. he does the bare minimum of hiding his powers, had a crush on the girl who's necklace can kill him, never wears less that 3 layers, literally never explains anything to his friends ever. has only 2 friends who've just accpeted that fact he will disappear with no explanation. he calls his barn roof room the fortess of solitude, he found out he was an alien and sulked in the middle of graveyard at midnight. he's a skeptic who panics at the slightest of evidence. he's a dork. hes fucking terrifying. he was on drugs (red k) for 3 months and did nothing but commit crimes and be a bitch. he blew up his house. he's destroyed so many trucks.he has too much modesty until he's near red k. he once crashed lexs wedding party with lois and exposed him. sometimes he'll just pick lois up and put her down slightly to the left. he wears one fucking jacket. he thinks capes are dumb he basically killed a man in episode 5 of season 1 and it's never brought up again. I'm obessed with him

You’ve talked before about similarities between Kon and the version of Lex from Smallville, so I was just wondering if you could elaborate more on that? While I have mixed feelings on Kon and the Clex test tube baby retcon, I do ultimately enjoy the idea that Kon takes after Clark and Lex without meaning to do so.
sure! as i'm sure you've gathered i love talking about lex soooo... 😅
to preface, it probably goes without saying, but when i say kon has a lot in common with lex, I'm talking specifically about the original version. as much as i love the concept of kon being a........."binary clone", as DC insists on calling it (insert "sure jan.gif" here), the black tee era feels almost unrecognizable as the same character at points.
but lex in the early seasons of smallville has a certain reckless disregard for his own well-being that kon also shares, and kon is also impulsive in a way that clark isn't but lex -- especially in his younger years -- is. (tbh i think you can make a strong case for both having bipolar disorder, but then we're just getting into my personal headcanons.)
kon is very flirtatious, and cocky, and a little bit vain, all of which are traits that he has in common with lex.
i also like the idea of kon looking a little like lex, and while you can argue that kon is so much shorter and leaner than clark because he's perpetually stuck as a teenager, i like to think part of it is him taking after lex a little bit. i am a "green eyes kon" truther til the end.
i think the biggest similarity the two have, though, is -- ironically -- some of their specific forms of parental trauma. post-crisis/pre-flashpoint lex was...kind of a nightmare every time he and kon interacted, unfortunately. it's not really a secret that smallville drew a lot from post-crisis lex for lionel's characterization and backstory, so (probably on accident, lbr, because i don't think geoff johns was thinking about it that deeply) you kind of end up with a narrative of lex perpetuating the same kind of abuse that he went through at the same age. given smallville lex's intense fear of becoming his father, there's something potentially really tragic there, to me.
i think, in the hands of a writer who was actually interested in exploring it, you could spin a pretty compelling narrative about cycles of abuse and lex either perpetuating or making an active effort to break that cycle -- regardless of which side of things you're inclined to come down on -- but unfortunately, geoff johns didn't seem that interested in digging into lex's psyche when he was writing kon.

I used to think Lionel deserved to die a horrible death when I watched SV but then I read comics and watched other shows + the cartoons and now I realize Lionel was the true Lex Luthor of SV. Sure a golden age-like Lex Luthor which is arguably the worst take on Lex to ever exist but STILL. And while SV Lex is still my fucked up babygirl and he did become a more Lex-like Lex Luthor by the end he's still less of a Lex Luthor than Lionel Luthor was. ANYWAYS Lionel still deserved to die a horrible death in the end but I get him now ❤ like all the other Lexes to exist before and after him I cherish him as the absolutely awful person that he is ❤ it's not his fault he's build that way ❤

VERY funny how Clark is said to be good because he was found by the Kents and was raised by them and he would've been an evil tyrant if he was raised by Lionel. Meanwhile, Lex was a pure hearted person, always willing to help, despite being raised by Lionel. Until he met Clark. Truly hilarious. Top tier script writing.

one of the many things that kills me about lex in smallville is that he tries SO hard to be a good person in spite of everything he goes through—which usually manifests in the way he gives just about everything he has to protect the people he cares about. And it doesn’t even have to be people he’s known for a long time, someone will do one nice thing for him and he’s like wow… thank you so much.. would it be okay if I tried to solve all of your life’s problems and made sure nothing bad ever happened to you ever again? And sure it’s like kind of insane that he does that, but at the same time it’s remarkable that someone who has first hand seen some of the worst things humanity has to offer at the hand of his own father since he was a kid, is still so willing to see the good in people, and deem them worthy of unconditional love and protection. Obviously he does this the most with Clark and the Kents and how devoted he is to them regardless of how poorly they treat him, and while I think that’s because he truly loved and cared about Clark I think it’s also because in a way he’s trying to be the person he never had

Anyone else notice and love how, when Lex is angry, his eyes don't get "angry" along with his tone; in fact said tone, and posturing, slightly rigid, body language are MUCH more accurate identifiers of his mood--especially when he loses his patience. There is this brilliant acting choice from Rosenbaum that entails Lex's eyes simply widening, growing much paler blue, his lips forming a tight little understated snarl. It's marvelous because MR realizes Lex has had to grow up suppressing all his stronger emotions both to please Lionel, to help keep the fragile image of a happy rich American family intact, and for his own safety from Lionel's retaliation (look I don't care what anyone says, a kid who claims he killed his baby brother because he KNOWS his dad is capable of killing his mom for it? that's not a kid who was EVER safe).
I considered the idea that Lex could be on the autism spectrum (I'm still not entirely sure he isn't) with a tremendous gift for social masking; I think he could also be masking due to trauma and its resulting mental illnesses (such as c-PTSD) but his learned mistrust of psychologists and psychiatrists has kept him from addressing it.
So we get "shark looming in the water" face instead, face dead, jaw unhinged, eyes so bright and intense and cold:

WHY do people insist that Jonathan needs to take Lex in as his unofficial son??? Jonathan had every right to treat Lex the way he did. Granted, sometimes it was a bit much but I totally understand where he’s coming from when Lex is the way he is. And the gag?? Jonathan was RIGHT the entire time! You CANNOT trust a Luthor. Lex was invading Clark’s privacy from s1. He literally hired a PI to investigate him. And this is the man y’all want Jonathan to accept and be an honorary father to?? bffr. If Lex truly wanted that relationship, he would’ve stopped invading their privacy and respected Clark, his secret and family, like a regular human being.

#almost every time he does anything remotely 'shady' #no matter how good his intentions or reasons for doing it are #he's basically always like #instantly punished for it which #narratively speaking #makes it kind of hard to root against him? #from an audience perspective? #cause he's like #perpetually the underdog and almost never wins anything lol #like I know in kids cartoons the villain always always loses #and is generally just perpetually beat on by the good guys #but #that doesn't really work very well outside of that very specific structure of a 20 minute goofy animated show intended for 5-year-olds
