tomorrow i'm visiting a stable where i might start having equine therapy eventually.. nervous but excited!!

we went to iceland!

#it was our 5th year anniversary trip. yes we went the first week of october yes i am posting this more than a month later this is bc im #allergic to social media and will forget for weeks on end. it is a miracle this is getting posted at all. #anyways!! iceland is the most beautiful country ive ever been to. literally in love. incredible time. most of these are from reykjavik #proper. top left is the view right across from our hotel (haunts me still I Miss Her). middle is black sand beach. top middle is me and my #most beautiful wife who didnt like her face in this so she is instead a heart (tragic bc i looked amazing in this set). #pls know that every picture that i will be posting my wife took bc she is a camera GODDESS (all from her phone bc she does hard mode). dont #ever make the mistake of thinking i am posting my pics i cannot take them and they always come out blurry #everyone *suffered* with my snapchats and then i went and posted the Good Ones #we did an escape room in reykjavik too--mafia-themed it was great--and walked all over and ate a great deal and saw so very many cats. huge #fan of all the cats. #prepare for spam #iceland trip #mine.txt #my face #i think is my tag? #i reach for you in the night

(um i talked quite a bit and i think some people may want to opt out of hearing about this soooo its under the cut)

ok so theres this museum in iceland called the 'the icelandic phallological museum' that features penises. HUNDREDS of specimens' species' penises its so crazy. including whales!! whale penises are wild, a lot of people mistake them for monsters in the ocean (tbf, in grainy photos, they do look like the lochness monster. but no, they're just cocks.)

the museum also has a bistro called the phallus cafe and bistro where you can get penis waffles. and theres a gift shop with penis themed wares.

the penis museum is looking for human donors last i heard. its been a while since i checked in on the museum so take it with a grain of salt, but they have a human penis on display but its really small and sad due to poor conditions and a bad detachment process so they are supposedly looking for a bigger and healthier one!

anyways its like my dream to go there (and omg if i could work there- thatd be so cool!!)

in news from grad life, my supervisor asked me about phd plans today and upon hearing i want to take a few years to do various non-academic things before i start one, immediately produced an application form for a scholarship to study abroad in iceland for a year? like this was not remotely on the radar of what i was planning for next year but tbf i hadn't actually planned that much, and i was initially looking at a master's programme in iceland before i settled on the one i've actually ended up on, so... why not! could be living in iceland this time next year! sometimes niche, half-buried teenage dreams do come true!

#it is a scholarship to study the first year of the BA in icelandic as a second language #and i think after that year you can choose whether to reapply for the scholarship and keep going with the rest of the degree or not #i have other vague post-masters ideas such as enrolling in a 6ish month long creative writing course i've had an eye on for a while #but that is online and could theoretically be done alongside a uni course in icelandic #if anyone following me for whatever reason knows anything about being an international student in iceland i am eager for advice #spending my evening hyping myself up and going down study abroad research rabbit holes #15 y.o. magnus studying a beat-up second-hand icelandic grammar book on their school lunch breaks is thriving rn #oh i am also taking very *very* beginner's icelandic classes at uni alongside my master's this year but it's not certified/accredited #i don't even think the teacher is qualified i'm p sure they just enlisted the first icelandic man they found who happened to be in the city #rambles

I’ve been learning Norwegian with books and Duolingo for the last (almost) year and every time I read “helgen” I instantly think of the exact opposite of what I’m supposed to think of. Practicing Norwegian? Think of Skyrim. Playing Skyrim? Why is this town named “the weekend”? I can’t win. The wrong one is always the first to come to mind

#emma posts #Skyrim #game developers: open up a Norwegian dictionary and point to a word at random #that’s a town now #it could also be a joke or something #I don’t remember if the start of the game takes place during an in-game weekend but if it does #the town only lasted a weekend (to you) #but a weekend implies two days #maybe it’s a Swedish word or something instead #I haven’t gotten that far into Swedish and Icelandic uses a lot of different letters #they seem to have gotten rid of a lot of them on the continental Nordic countries #but I don’t know ANY danish and I have no concept of Faroese (I am so sorry if I massacred the spelling) #I don’t have a Swedish dictionary so I’d have to use google translate or something to check #Icelandic seems to have more words for things than Norwegian but I’m not really learning that language yet #my grandparents decided to try learning Icelandic first and I am like. in awe but also a bit sorry #they don’t really have a reason to learn Norwegian and Swedish though. unlike me #and apparently Icelandic is the hardest to learn. which is why I developed my fantastic learning strategy #Norwegian seems slightly easier to learn as a native English speaker than Swedish does. and Icelandic is obviously the hardest. but it’s #also closest to their shared ancestor (remember I’m talking about language) so if I start with Norwegian it will be easiest and then #with each of the other languages the next should be easier than it would be without the other two #Norwegian and Icelandic have an interesting history as related languages but that’s not important to this discussion #but… Icelandic is all the same and Norwegian and Swedish have a whole bunch of regional stuff and oh boy idk #but all I need to know for the foreseeable future is how to read and listen #I don’t need writing and speaking yet #this would be so much easier if my grandparents had not just switched to English and forgot any of the other languages they grew up with #though the Icelandic ones didn’t speak much at all compared to my dad’s parents who spoke some of theirs as kids #I could know even more languages by now if everyone hadn’t just switched to English. though I keep forgetting how to write Spanish. that’s #only half related though. since it’s the second most popular language in my country we had some classes as kids and some media that was #bilingual but not enough for me to ever be fluent. plus I freeze up any time I try conversation because I get too nervous about making #mistakes. I’m so off track in the tags though

helloooo friend!!!! thank u for the good vibes wishing them right back for you!!!! i actually live in chinatown which means i have dumplings like every other week LOL you really can't beat chinese food tbh but yes i had bún thịt nướng yesterday which is grilled pork on top of vermicelli noodles and pickled veggies and saunce and it was sooooo good. it's actually kinda funny because i was reykjavik literally yesterday and i ate at a vietnamese restaurant called vietnam restaurant (don't @ me i was craving rice 😭)

the thing abt sport is it’s boring cheering for the team who always wins, you’re not waiting for them to win, you’re waiting for that one rare occasion for them to Lose and it’s no fun. 

But i also hate it when the people i cheer for lose. 

It’s a lose/lose situation for me. 

#ideally i'd pick a team Closeish to the top but not at the top #so it's not utterly absurd to think they might win a league or something #but they're Not the team anybody thinks will take home the trophy #there is a sweet spot where it's not boring but also not a foregone conclusion okay #the simple answer to this is to cheer for the national team in whatever sport it it #but the thing is... more oft than not i hope my team loses out of sheer spite #that time iceland kicked england out of euros was like. the BEST day for me. #this post is not abt footie but that day was too good not to mention

everytime I see someone use the "Well, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland aren't germanic enough to be considered part of the germanic family" logic, I have to physically restrain myself from going on a tangent about Jastrorf Culture, and how North Germanic languages are 'more germanic' then any West Germanic language, and how even Scandinavian people are more Germanic (depending on your source but most say yes).

Like if anything the central Germanics aren't germanic enough :\
