I think Paul and Arielle started dating in 1997, and at the time, she was brunette. Then, in 2001, during the making of Sonne music video, you can see that she's got her now signature fiery red colour.. and of course, that's the year when Paul channelled his inner monk, so something tells me they've shared the hair dye 😂

Thank you for sending me this.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but if I were in charge, it would be a total remake. I would give it the LAU treatment. It would essentially be the same story, with the same characters, but updated. A reimagining.

Take the story back to the start and remake it with today’s tech, upgraded physics, controls, fight mechanics, new puzzles, the entire works.

But the most important thing is that it feels like a Legacy of Kain game.

For that you’d have to use the same rich aesthetic with deep, jewelled colours of the original series. Not the washed-out, grey-brown AC/Skyrim style palette that was all the rage in the last decade.

Remaster the soundtrack with strong leanings into the original themes.

Ideally enlist the help of Amy Hennig with the script and direction. She’s still out there, making games. I’m sure she’d love to remake and finish what she started. Allow her to tell the story she wanted to tell without interference.

If Amy wasn't available, at least stay true to that original tone. One of the most applauded things about Legacy of Kain is the Shakespearean-style dialogue, and that can’t change. Or it just won’t feel like Legacy of Kain.

Recast with some of the new exceptional voice talent out there today. Don’t be hung up on ‘you can’t recast this role’ - it’s been done before in other series and worked amazingly well (God of War, for example). I’ll save my ideal LoK recastings for another post.

Start with Blood Omen. But keep the third-person action adventure style of the Soul Reaver era.

Re-write the story with diverse characters.

Don’t fall into the Trinity trap. The rule of thumb in writing circles is this. If your female character can be replaced by a signpost for your male protagonist to learn from and surpass without changing the story, then she wasn’t a ‘strong female character’ after all.

Disclaimer - Ariel is not a strong female character, but she was never meant to be. Someone had to play that role, be it male or female. That doesn't mean there cannot be others. But I’d rather have no representation than bad representation.

Gender-bending a few of the brothers would be one way to do it. Or re-instate the sorceress content. But no nudity, and no modern swearing. Sex is great, but if all you have is sex appeal, strip that away, it’s still a bad game. Sex appeal is just unnecessary window dressing to a story like Legacy of Kain.

Don’t use poor treatment of a female character to motivate your male protagonist. Raziel didn’t need female trauma dangled in front of him as motivation, and neither should Kain, or anyone else, for that matter.

Bodyshock is fine. It's always been part of Legacy of Kain, but again, don’t take a pregnant woman and turn her and her child into some kind of abomination. Female trauma for shocks is cheap. If you’re going to do that to a female protagonist (say, Ripley, for example), then at least you’re not taking away her agency. But if you’re doing it just to motivate your male character, it takes away her agency and becomes highly misogynistic.

Above all, finish the story. Don’t let Raziel heal the scion of balance and then say, ‘Oh well, part three was the end of the story’ - make his journey and sacrifice mean something.

Allow your protagonists to jump around in time, but their personal journeys must have a beginning, a middle, and a meaningful, satisfying end.

Ohmygosh this is so hard! I genuinely love all the characters.

If I have to choose, though, I'd have to say Judy? She's just so enthusiastic and willing to help out in ways that are somehow silly and serious at the same time. It's sweet the way she's so quick to marry Brom and Matilda when she thinks she's helping them out (or she just knows something they don't), but I especially love how she dives head first into the adventure at the end. She breaks the gang out of jail, gets them a head and accidentally gets a job at the morgue, plus she catches Baltus by being the bait herself. She's so supportive of everyone and you know she's helping to pick up the pieces after the finale. (And you can't underestimate the power of knowing how to navigate paperwork and administration!)

Ariel and Sal! What is their approach to faith? It's D&D so there is no disputing if gods exist, but do they revere them? Any specific ones? Holding a grudge against any?

This was a really cool ask, thank you! 💜Took me some time to gather my thoughts on this one, so my apologies for taking so long to respond!

Sal has a casual reverence for Umberlee (because of where he was found and raised) and for Tymora (luck being very important to thieves), but his default assumption is that the gods -- like every other power structure he has encountered -- aren't listening and are primarily concerned with maintaining the status quo and their own power. I think what Sal has is probably closer to superstition than faith, if that makes sense? It's more about participating in the social/cultural ritual than it is about worship or devotion or even getting a result; for him a prayer is less talking to a god and more just speaking the words of a charm.

Ariel is..... messier. He was in so deep. He was so broken and dehumanized and brainwashed, so dependent on the cult's rhetoric and validation in order to just function. The cult shaped and defined him completely. I don't think he could give himself in that way again. Even to a less toxic extent. Even to a "good" deity. I think for him worship will always feel like a form of self-annihilation. I think, instead, he puts his faith in the people he is close to.

As for grudges, the Dead 3 are (unsurprisingly) top of the list for both of them, especially Bhaal, especially for Ariel -- I don't think it is possible to overstate how deep that hate (and hurt) goes. Shar, Mystra, Vlaakith and Zariel can also fuck right off into the sun. Sal would also like to add Liovatar to the list, but really he's just still salty that he didn't get to punch Abdirak for messing with Ariel's head XD.

Honestly, by the end, Sal is getting so unhinged that there probably isn't a god that he doesn't want to fight. The whole "we're not allowed to interfere" excuse hits different when you're one of the mortals they are (ab)using to wage a divine proxy war.

Im curious, what originally inspired you to create your OC Ariel for Dragon Age?

Hi there and thanks for the ask.

Before I begin, I'd like to say that there is a subset of fandom (not just in Dragon Age, but generally) that would not consider Ariel an OC of any kind. A character that exists or is named in some way in the story, as all Dragon Age player-characters are, are not what they would consider original. Similarly, some might argue that player-characters tend to be self-inserts, and to some degree that may be true (Dragon Age is an RPG, after all) but that isn't always the case.

I think both of these arguments have merit. I do, however, consider player-characters as OCs because the interpretations of said characters vary by individual. Particularly with the Warden and Inquisitor, we were given a rough starting point (and even then, some forego that entirely) while the rest is ambiguous enough to be left to the player's imagination.

Ariel was originally thought up following a complete playthrough of Origins, in which I immediately went on to Inquisition. She started out as a simple idea: I wanted the Warden at Skyhold following Here Lies the Abyss, with the Wardens recruited into the Inquisition, and having been a victim of Corypheus' false Calling herself.

I was missing my Warden in Inquisition and didn't like that they were handwaved away and exploring "the lands beyond Thedas." The letter the HoF sends to Skyhold was generic (can't really fault Bioware for that) and didn't sound like her. The way I played this Warden in Origins was such that she would have been horrified at what the Order had done, and be aware enough that she could use the Inquisition's resources to her benefit.

TLDR: I had a "What If" idea and ran with it.

I suppose this technically answers the question, but there's a bit more and this is getting a bit long so more under the cut.

She was also initially meant to be somewhat secondary to another problem I had with Inquisition, which was that Leliana went through a lot and I didn't feel like it was properly explored. You could argue this is understandable given her position and history, that she'd be more walled off and guarded. This is why Griffonheart is from her POV. (Griffonheart my beloved absolute trashfire.) But specifically, this was a romanced Leliana and I wanted to explore the conflicts of that as well.

However, given the absolute mess that is Leliana's canon writing, I sometimes feel like it would have been better if Bioware had introduced another character in Leliana's place. But alas, the stage was set from Leliana's Song and DA2's Exiled Prince.

Anyway, from there Ariel became more in-depth with her inner conflicts and struggles. I started thinking about what she would be like given how I set her up for Griffonheart (which was started before Broken Bird). For example, her brother, Eran, initially existed only to justify Ariel's existence, because I wanted a very specific world state that is not possible due to gameplay/story limitations of Origins. I thought about the City Elf origin, how that might change with siblings both recruited by Duncan, and all the little things about a Tabris playthrough that I felt could be expanded on.

I started thinking about her life in the alienage, made mountains out of molehills of the alienage's arranged marriages (internalized homophobia), racism/classism between elves and humans, and how a running theme (in my opinion) across the Origin's companions is loss and mourning.

Eventually, I ended up with a flawed and traumatized elf.

Perfect Match - Arielle x Hayden:

You best believe they take Halloween VERY seriously.

They go all out on the lights, the decorations, the costumes, etc.

They even buy a special pumpkin costume for Dipper! (Sloane thinks it's absolutely adorable)

As for their own costumes, they both decide to dress up in a couple's costume. Arielle dresses up as Sally and Hayden as Jack from the Nightmare before Christmas.

They buy a ton of candy beforehand, so they give some out to the kids that are trick or treating in their neighborhood.

After they hand out the rest of the candy, they head out to have some fun of their own.

They both go to a Halloween nightclub where they proceed to dance the night away!

Crimes of Passion - Valentina x Trystan:

At first, Valentina isn't keen on celebrating Halloween. At all. Her plans involve staying in and watching horror movies all night long.

However, after some persuasion, Trystan manages to convince her otherwise.

While they don't dress up, they do get some free candy in the nearby stores that Trystan insists on trying because he's never had "American candy" before.

He hates it, but eats it all anyway.

Trystan then pulls the detective toward the annual NYC Halloween parade that he's read about. Much to her chagrin.

They stand in the crowded sidelines, watching all the dozens of various people in costumes as they march through the streets.

Trystan excitedly discusses all his favorite, and least favorite, costumes that he sees as they pass by. And the detective can't help but chuckle at his childlike enthusiasm.

After the parade is over, they head back home, snuggle up on the couch, and watch some classic Halloween movies until they fall asleep together.
