My thoughts on The Ssum about a week into playing it:

(This will probably be kinda long and a big mess, lol. Prepare for word vomit. Slight spoilers until day 8!!)

I’ll be completely honest right off the bat; I’m having quite a bit of trouble staying engaged. My 2 friends who are also playing are having a similar experience so if anyone is having a splendid time I’d love to hear about it (no spoilers tho, please!)!

(Also disclaimer, I will be comparing TS to MysMe here and there but bare with me please.)

To start off, is it just me or is there a higher paywall than before?? I can’t believe I’m not allowed to see certain images unless I use batteries! That feels a little ridiculous, no? You start off with barely any batteries and they go by so fast.

Then you go to look at the prices, and it’s just about 3 dollars for 30– compared to 99c for 30 hourglasses in Mystic it feels like a pretty big leap. And then the “private account”???? What is that? 64 cents a DAY? That’s almost 20 dollars a month and for what? “Unlimited calls, battery answers and image download.” WHY IS DOWNLOADING IMAGES BEHIND A PAYWALL??? In Mystic you make a single purchase of $25 and you get like 5000 calls per person. Why is there a daily fee for this instead of a one time purchase?

Speaking of “special replies” that you use batteries for— I’m not loving that some of the decent replies you can make cost batteries. One of the best features about Mystic is the freedom of choice. They don’t lead you to a response, you get to pick for yourself and make your own decisions. I will say, it does seem that batteries don’t always lead you to the “good” answer, but it just feels like a ploy to get you to use more batteries lol. There’s also 2 billion pop ups and often an ad for in game purchases that you can’t skip for 5 seconds? This isn’t a video, it’s a game, why are you giving me an ad I can’t skip for a game I’m already playing? And it’s not like only when you open the app, it’s like every other action.

The Story:

What… is the story? I’m so confused, lol. Again, I will say I’m having a lot of trouble staying engaged so I haven’t been as thorough as I could be being BUT— I did not have trouble staying engaged with Mystic, lol. Even replaying now, after all these years, I can play through Mystic eagerly and I look forward to the chat rooms. Did anyone else feel like they were just plunged into The Ssum without anything to back it up? I do want to add I was HYPED about TS, I’ve been waiting since like 2018 for the game and I can’t help but feel disappointed but I swear I went into this with a positive mindset.

Game starts, a bird tells you you’re going to fall in love, and then you start talking to this random ass guy who broke all his bones lol. I just feel like in Mystic, even though you’re thrown into the middle of a random and chaotic situation you’re immediately given context. You talk to a stranger > Go to a random house > Get into a chatroom with 5 strangers > They all introduce themselves and what they want you to achieve in the RFA > You wait for the next chatroom.

Maybe I’m just stupid but I have no clue why we’re supposed to be so engaged with this game. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE EMOTIONS? WHY ARE WE STUDYING THEM? Who is our character? Why do they stay engaged in the chats? I don’t understand the whole space part of the game—and yes I know I’m only 7-8 days into the game— but I just feel like we’re not given enough context??? You get all these emotions and you can study 3 at once OR pay SEVEN DOLLARS for a fourth? What does incubating the emotions even do???

The way I see the “emotions” you gain is like the hearts in Mystic, and in Mystic you can convert hearts to hourglasses since you get so many of them. However in TS, you can crunch batteries for more emotions? Why? How would that feel worth it when the only way to get a decent amount of batteries is by paying for them?

I’m sorry but don’t get me wrong! I love him! He’s adorable and his voice is very cute. But like… what is there to him? He wants to produce films and likes that sort of thing but with all the talk of his hospitalization did he ever even say what the film he was in was about? I get so bored in our conversations. And he takes so long to type for what??? 😭 In Mystic, even without having Max Speed, you can speed up the chat to 9x but in TS you can skip forward using— you guessed it— batteries. Albeit it’s only 1 battery per minute, but again, you barely get any batteries to begin with so it’d add up quick if you chose to use that option.

I understand that there’s like 200 freaking days of content lol, but I’m not feeling motivated to stick around for it. 8 days in and NOTHING interesting has happened except for the fact that he’s leaving the hospital. Yay? Now what? Is the plot finally gonna happen once he’s out?

I get the feeling that they want this to feel more natural and like you’re talking to a real person, but at the end of the day this is a game and I need some plot, lol. The little bit of activity I get with the emotions doesn’t do much for me considering I don’t even really understand what they’re for, unlike the emails in Mystic which are for the party.

Finishing thoughts:

At the end of the day, The Ssum isn’t like horrible. It’s just boring so far, and the paywall is a little ridiculous. I’m gonna stick with it and hope things get interesting but I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts! I know this was long and pretty much just me complaining but I’m honestly not enjoying it as much as I had hoped I would, lol. “Nothing I couldn’t handle,” you reply smugly, meeting Yoongi’s eyes, “But he did well and truly wear me out... Clearly."

You chuckle as Hoseok covers your hands in a million tiny kisses.

“Perhaps I do need to step my game up,” he teases, “I’ve never seen you so fucked out.”

“Nothing a good nap can’t fix,” you tease back. He smiles up at you, and you once again get lost in his brightness and warmth. “Mind if I join you all for a drink?”

i do in fact! i've actually been meaning to make a post about how i choose to write all of the foxes' ethnicities anyway

but yes i absolutely agree that the typical pinterest model types u generally see on edits is not how i see any of them. nor is reece king or froy gutierrez or lucky blue smith one of my FCs for anyone

for a lot of them i don't necessarily have a single specific FC so much as i have like,, a general impression of features that i will see on various different people, who all may look wildly different from each other or who may not even look how i see the character as a whole but do have a specific feature i associate with them. mostly it boils down to the Energy i get tbh and that's just a Feeling i cant even explain

ethnicity: a lot of things tbd, but he's pretty multi-ethnic. i like the idea of kayleigh being half- or a quarter-japanese in addition to irish because it gives her more of a reason to go to japan for her undergrad. wymack is from d.c. which is a majority black city for its actual residents, but i also like the idea of him being Pasifika/Hawaiian. HOWEVER - and this is pretty important to my read of kevin's character - he's white passing, and has been mostly treated as a white guy who tans his whole life, like occasionally asked if he's italian maybe. learning that his father was a Distinctly Not White Man was a big shock to him.

kristin kreuk, lindsay price, phoebe cates, and marie digby are all half-asian actresses i base kayleigh on

i suppose i base his story partially on broadway actress carol channing, who revealed publically that she was a quarter black when she was like 80 years old. though maybe wentworth miller, a biracial actor who knows his father is black but also doesn't know him, is more accurate to kevin's story. then keanu reeves is a white passing actor with asian ancestry

appearance: definitely takes after his mother while his father is white passing. dark brown skin, warm undertones. slightly stocky build. tall ovular head and thin aquiline nose. he's kind of just,, the opposite of the twins ig, so like their facial features look very different, which is a big part of why people don't make the connection between him and the twins alongside the difference in their skin tones, heights, and builds. nicky's build and features are very vertically-oriented, with a tall head, narrow-set eyes, thin nose with a high bridge, etc. the twins are horizontally-orienged, with broad, flat faces, wide-set eyes, wide noses with a low bridge, etc.

FC/Energy: yalitza aparicio, not a guy but one of the few Mexican Indigenous stars in the film industry and i really like her features for nicky. she's oaxacan

9. Renee

ethnicity: Black. african american

appearance: plus sized, circular/apple body shape. round face. dark skin. microlocs to a bit past her chin, bleached white and dyed at the ends. she and allison go to the salon together. femme but plain style, a lot of blouses and long skirts, practical shoes. knuckle callouses. about 5'6

what are your favorite makeup products rn?

I’m almost used up my second Winky Lux Whipped Cream Primer so I’ve started using my Australian Gold Tinted Sunscreen as a primer and while it’s too thick for me as a sunscreen it is great for blurring my pores and mattifying my t-zone. 

My skin has become super sensitive and fickle so all I’ve been able to use that doesn’t break me out is the Colorpop Pretty Fresh tinted moisturizer but I love it, really natural looking, pretty finish.  

Haven’t really found a ride or die under-eye concealer but Nars Soft Matte for life for concealing blemishes.

Didn’t want to buy the CT Flawless Finish powder again so I bought Flower Beauty Light Illusion powder bc I heard it was a dupe and it’s great. A+

I love talking about makeup but this is getting long-winded so I’m just going to lightning round the rest: 16 Brand Shanding Almond Contour, Milk Matte Bronzer, CT Flawless Filter for Highlight, Glossier Lash Slick and Boy Brow (hate the packaging on this one tho), Maybelline Hyper Easy Brush Tip eyeliner, I also really like the Milk Kush mascara, don’t judge me but the KKW lipliners are really great and pretty moderately priced, I will literally never run out of my Anastasia Dipbrow which is fine by me bc I hate buying brow products, not for everyone but I use a small brush and a very light hand, finally on my eyes I use my Kaja Chocolate Dahlia trio almost everyday.

Could probably devote a book to blushes and lip-products but I love Hourglass Dim Infusion blush, Buxom White Russian lipgloss and Nars Belle De Jour is my signature nude.

I love Hourglass finishing powders. I have several of the full-size individual compacts as well as the trios. So I haven’t been stingy when it comes to dropping serious coin on this brand. However I’ve always passed on their holiday palettes. Every year, they come out with one and I always felt they were small and overpriced. All of the powders were similar to what I already had in my stash.

Rip-Off or No?

I’ve seen the posts about how this palette is a rip-off. Most makeup products are overpriced in general. And Hourglass doesn’t shy away from being as a known luxury brand. They price their products in that upper bracket. So you know they won’t be discounting this stuff anytime soon. Have they ever gone on sale? Do they do deep discounts like Urban Decay? I don’t know.

Last year’s palettes were gone even before the actual holidays arrived. I managed to get the highlighter trio which I was impressed with. Most of what I have has lasted a good long time. The only powder that I’ve hit pan on is my fave: Diffused Light (soft, warm pale yellow powder) which works so well for me.

The palette is $80. It costs a fortune but the single mini’s are $22/1.4g. You get 1.13g of product in this palette, so it’s slightly less than the mini. If I bought just the single minis, it would be $132. My calculations might be different from other blogger’s calculations. 😀

While I do think it’s overpriced, I’m justifying my reasons for purchasing:

I don’t have the previous holiday palettes.

I will use all of the colors and they all work on me.

It is travel-friendly.

I don’t want to buy them individually which will cost more.

They are all new colors I don’t have.

Hourglass is 100% vegan and I can tell there is a difference in quality and application.

Hourglass did come out with another holiday palette in addition to this (packaging has pink metallic). That one has their best-selling shades: [Dim Light (neutral peach beige), Diffused Light (soft pale yellow), Euphoric Strobe Light (pearlescent beige), Filtered Bronze Light (subtle warm bronze), Luminous Glow (bright coral), Euphoric Fusion (soft lilac)]. When I was deciding on which to get, I opted for the other one, since I have most of these shades.

Back to the Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked!

While you do get new shades, the pattern is similar: you get 2 finishing powders, a bronzer, 2 blushes (usually a peach and plum) and a highlighter.

Soft Light and Filtered Light (light and medium finishing powders)

Golden Bronze Light (bronzer)

Nude Glow (peach blush a la Nars)

Mood Flush (plum blush)

Champagne Strobe (highlighter). 

Final Thoughts

I tried the palette today. I used all of them for my finished beat face and they all perform very well. No regrets! Think this works for a once in a year treat. My excuse is my list above and Influenster offered 8% cash back at Sephora last week. So I took advantage of that (even tho there were tech glitches).

If you’re on the fence with it, just think if this is something that you would really use. It is travel friendly. If you tend to use Hourglass a lot, then it’s a good multitasking product to add to your makeup arsenal. I had no problems with using my brushes either as I didn’t use anything larger than the pan itself. Hourglass does make a double-ended brush that is meant to be used with this palette too.

There have been a few Sephora sales lately and as you might have assumed, I’ve picked some things up. But I’ve also gotten some things in the last several months that I’m not sure I’ve shared with y’all so I wanted to give y’all a roundup of some random products and what I think of them. (Obviously.) I know this might seem like a lot of things, but I want to stress that this has been spread over the last several months, not just like, one huge purchase, and the most expensive things were likely bought with 20% off! I also have gotten several eyeshadow palettes recently, but I am going to do a big palette roundup in the next few weeks where I swatch everything, so that’s going to take a bit of time. But I definitely have enough palettes for a big post, so stay tuned for that!

Ole Henriksen Glow Brightly Radiance-Boosting Super Set ($49): As y’all know, I have been a Drunk Elephant devotee for a long time but I tend to go back to Ole Henriksen pretty regularly, because I really enjoy their Truth Serum, which is their vitamin C serum. I think it’s a really nice serum, and it’s less expensive than drunk elephant. This set in particular included the following:

– 1 oz/ 30 mL Truth Serum – 0.25 oz/ 7 mL Goodnight Glow Retin-ALT Sleeping Crème – 0.25 oz/ 7 mL Banana Bright Eye Crème – 0.5 oz/ 15 mL C-Rush Brightening Gel Crème

I really like ALL of these products, so I feel like this set is a steal. However, I have not yet tried the Goodnight Glow Retin-ALT Sleeping Crème. Right now I have it on back up after I run out of my Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil. However, I love all the rest of these products, and I’m excited to get more of them!

Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done Hybrid Foundation ($36): As I mentioned, I’ve been on a quest for lightweight foundations, and I decided to try one of Urban Decay’s less popular foundations, as this is sort of like a tinted moisturizer/bb cream. However, this is oil-free, so it wears nicely on me, very similarly to the Dior Backstage. I need to test both a bit more to see if the Urban Decay is a dupe, but even if it is, it’s not much more expensive, plus, the Dior has a MUCH better shade range. However, I do like this, and I’m happy with it.

Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation in 1 Neutral ($40): I have been on a quest to try new lightweight foundations, since that’s my jam now, and after watching a bunch of reviews of this, decided to try it when it went on sale. I initially got this foundation in shade 2 Neutral, and it was too dark, so I ended up getting it in 1 Neutral and it looks better. When there are 40 shades, I don’t always assume I am the lightest, but I need to remember that I am. I’ve worn this about a week, and I feel like my skin has looked really nice. It feels very lightweight, like I’m not wearing much at all, but I feel like it really evens out my skintone. I’ve been wearing this with the Too Faced Peach Perfect Mattifying Setting Powder (below) and I haven’t really even had to touch up my face all day long!

Too Faced Peach Perfect Mattifying Setting Powder ($33): I bought this as an impulse, because I saw a few people with a similar skin-type to me (combo) say that they really like it, and I thought that maybe I could try it out. It’s a bit peachier than the more ivory Laura Mercier setting powder, which I was using previously. I’ve been using a very light dusting on this all over my light foundations, and to set my concealer under my eyes, and it’s kept my makeup looking really nice all day. It’s definitely matte, but it doesn’t look dry or cakey. Also, it smells like peaches, and weirdly, tastes like peaches? I do not know why they did that, but it does. I discovered that by accident. I don’t recommend this as an appetizer.

Yves St. Laurent Touche Eclat Radiance Perfecting Pen ($38): This is the product that I’ve used the least out of everything on this list, as I’ve only used it a few times. So far… I’m not really impressed, but I want to give it another few tries. I’m not sure if I just didn’t use enough, but I don’t think it did much. I don’t have serious dark circles so I don’t need a heavy duty concealer but it’s entirely possible that I need more than what this is. This is a product that used to have a lot of hype but I never tried it til now, and I’m just… not totally sold.

Yves St. Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain in 15 Violet Conviction ($37): This might be the hero product out of everything I got. I actually was trying to buy a set of three of these lipsticks that I am almost sure existed on the Sephora site, but of course disappeared during the sale. But anyway, this is more of a stain than a drying liquid lipstick. I decided to really go for it and get a dark shade and it wore really well during the day. I could add more on top without things getting crumbly or weird after I ate. The applicator helped give me a really crisp line, tho with like all dark/red lip colors like this, I tend to touch up around the edges with concealer. I really want to get more shades of this! Maybe a red next? I just love this formula so much!

This isn’t the best picture in the world, as I didn’t take it for blog use, but I realized too late that it was the only pic with this lipstick, so it will do. I think a lip swatch is better than an arm swatch! (Also pictured is the Hourglass Scattered Light Eyeshadow in Smoke, described below.)

Laneige Kiss and Make Up Set ($28): I am getting repetitive in this blog, but I totally love this lip mask, and this set contained a full-size version, (yay!) and then a few minis in different flavors! I could have broken this set up for gifts but… I didn’t.

Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Grind & Distortion ($20): I have been really into these glitter liners because you can use these in a bunch of different ways. Obviously you could really line your eyes with them if you wanted to, as it has a small brush tip. But I really like using it to put some glitter in my inner corner, or you can just paint the whole dang lid with glitter pretty easily. Grind has a bit more blue/green translucent glitter, and Distortion is a bit more pinky. It’s so hard (for me) to take good pics of glitter swatches but I did my best!

Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eyeshadow in Smoke ($29): More glitter! But this is the most beautiful, elegant way to wear glitter I’ve ever seen! I am really angry because I wanted to get all of the colors of this during the sale but of course they are sold out. But this particular shade is a bit more taupe/cool-toned and the glitters are so tiny, that they almost look like a glossy sheen. I need all the colors! Why is life. I need the champagne-y shade soooo bad!

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter Mini Macaron Set ($40): I bought one of the full-sizes of one of the included highlighters and then when I saw this set, I realized I could get 4 mini-highlighters for about the price of one big one, and decided to go that route! I had never tried Opal before, which is one of their flagship shades, and it’s a pretty bright highlight. But Vanilla Quartz is very much the highlight for me. It looks white, but it has sort of a gold-peachy shift that is just gorgeous. There is also a pink-y highlighter and a more lavender one, that I don’t love as much for cheek highlights but I think are great inner corner highlights for a bit of a pop!

(When I did the swatch below, my arm was stained in between Prismatic Amethyst and Vanilla Quartz from the YSL lipstick above. I only had it on my arm for a few minutes and it stained that quickly. But that’s a feature more than a bug, obvs.)

That way, there’s no pressure to come up with favorites during the week/month and I can just take note of the things I’m using and loving the most. Tho I do like alliteration and I had planned on posting this on a Friday for a Friday Favorites but Jill bumped me for the Book of the Month blog so… good job, Jill.

Urban Decay x Kristen Leanne Kaleidoscope Palette (No longer available): I feel so extremely lucky that I was able to get this palette when it went on sale for $20! The full-price of the palette was over $40, but it wasn’t even full-price for very long so I am glad I held out for the sale. Though after using the palette for awhile, I would have gladly paid over $40 for it! I used it a lot on the cruise recently, as I had the opportunity to do more adventurous looks on a regular basis versus my normal every day life. But I created the below look recently and I love it so, so much. I’s for sure the best makeup look I’ve ever done, hands down.

I haven’t always been the biggest fan of Urban Decay shadows but these are just so gorgeous so I’m hopeful that they’ve maybe changed their formula a bit to make them more creamy, pigmented and buttery. I’m really impressed!

Dose of Colors Blushing Berries Eyeshadow Palette ($32): Can you believe I paid $20 for 11 shades and then $32 for five shades? I feel like it balances out somehow. You know I love red eyeshadow, and this group of shadows has surprising versatility – you can do a super smoky berry eye look or you can keep it to the coral-y side and keep it more neutral. These shadows are extremely delicate and pigmented but we aren’t at a Subculture situation – they are still really easy to use and blendable. Just use a light hand. Mine actually came with one of the shades slightly broken but I decided to keep it anyway since most of the shadow was intact.

Colourpop All I See Is Magic Holiday 2017 Palette (No longer available): I’m sorry that I am obsessed with two limited edition palettes right now that are no longer available but these are the ones I am using the most! I received the Colourpop All I See Is Magic palette for Christmas and it’s one of the most versatile palettes I own! I keep it in my gym makeup bag because I can really do an infinite amount of looks with it. The Colourpop shadow formula is unreal, and the new Shayla x Colourpop Perception palette ($23) is incredible as well, and still available!

Morphe E1 Deluxe Powder Brush ($23): I got this brush awhile back when I still had my MorpheMe Brush Club subscription and never really picked it up until recently. I thought it was too big and I wasn’t really sure what to use it for. I recently was going through my brush collection so I could make a backup/gym brush bag so I wouldn’t have to pack up my everyday brushes, well, every day, when I came across it again. I decided to start using it with my Hourglass Lighting Palette, and I LOVE it. I basically just mix all three colors together and pat it all over my face. I wish I had started using this sooner!

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Lip Ink Colors in Lover (pink), Huntress (grey) and Protector (oxblood) ($7.09/each): The liquid lipstick trend is on its way out but there are times that call for a long-wearing lipstick, and for those times, I am pretty much going to turn to this formula. It’s incredibly comfortable – not dry AT ALL. It’s slightly tacky but that doesn’t bother me at all if my lips aren’t going to crack and break off. And the formula just does not budge all day – you can eat all sorts of things and aside from a slight wearing off on the inside of your lips, it stays PUT. This is especially important when you are wearing a dark lip color because you don’t want it transferring all over the place. I also really love the applicator, as it’s really pointy at the tip, which lets you get a really precise line without the need for a lip liner, which is really nice. And the best part? These babies are $7 each!

You can really collect them all, which is why I ended up with Huntress – I had always wanted to try a grey lipstick but I didn’t want to pay Kat Von D prices for something I wasn’t going to wear very often. But I really, really love it and want to experiment by wearing it more often!

UnReal on Lifetime: I really only started watching The Bachelor a few years ago, unlike some of my friends who started watching in college. But I’ve come to really enjoy it, which is why I fell in love with Unreal, which is about a fictional version of The Bachelor called Everlasting. It’s about the behind-the-scenes production of the show, and while it’s obviously extremely dramatized, it makes me understand a bit more about how The Bachelor. I tend to love strong, imperfect female characters, and this show focuses on two of them. Can this show be a little ridiculous and cheesy at times? Of course. It’s on Lifetime. But for the most part, I really enjoy this show and def recommend it to Bachelor fans and beyond!
