Hi! What kind of goods, do you think, Water Tribes are likely to export and import? North and South comic tried to make a story of oil discovery at the South Pole, but I hope they are not going to end up an oil-export based economy. Would they export furs? I am pretty sure rich folk in FN and EK would want the furs, but is it something Water Tribes be willing to do? Would they export ice (or waterbending services?) And what would they import, not just as luxury items, but as a staple?

Ooh, this is an interesting one.

Ice as an export makes a lot of sense. Everyone wants to keep food cold to slow down spoilage, and chilling food as a means to prep it allows for all kinds of methods. I'm sure waterbenders would make quick work of cutting ice into pieces and keeping it frozen throughout the shipping process and perhaps even installing the ice into cellars for customers.

Furs as they are, i'm not so sure about, as the qualities that make polar furs great clothes for polar regions can make them difficult to handle outside of those regions. My mom's rabbit skin parka can only be worn at -30°F or colder, otherwise, it's uncomfortably warm, and that's taking the stitching being worn out in places into consideration. Fur scraps to use as trim could be a good market. Baleen would be a hot commodity in a pre-plastic world. It can't be melted and poured into a mold like plastic, but it is a waterproof, sturdy material with plenty of give and with enough time and applied heat, will mold to the shape you bend it into. (For those unfamiliar with the details of corsetry: this is why baleen was used for corset bones. Not only did they offer sturdy, yet not brittle or shatter-prone support, but the baleen sewn into the corset would mold to the wearer's body due to their body heat, providing a custom fit once it was broken into or "seasoned.") Ivory, both fresh and fossilized, is easily carved, smooth to the touch, and has an elegant look. With any number of uses and the difficulty of obtaining it (fossilized ivory especially can only really be obtained through luck because it washes up in tidal pools after something someone dropped ages in the water), i imgine artisans of the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation would pay a lot for it.

Traditional art is another possible market, and craftsmanship has always been a means to bring in other resources irl, even before circumpolar peoples were pulled into a cash economy. To this day, a lot of money is found in selling traditional art of traditional material, including ivory, baleen, bone, antler, fur and skin, intestine, shell, sinew, nephrite jade, soapstone, grass, and driftwood. This art could come in the form of jewellery, sculptures and figurines, scrimshaw, miniature models of things like boats or dance masks, slippers, spoons, tobacco pipes, waterproof garments and wrappings of intestine and specialized sinew stitching, baskets, boxes, hairpins, traditional toys and more. People generally like to fill their homes with beautiful things, and expensive ones if they have the money for it. One can easily imagine nobility or even royalty spending a pretty penny commissioning, say, baleen scrimshaw illustrations of classical literary works for a library well-decorated with unique art from around the world and none of it captures darkness and light quite the same, or a matching necklace and earrings set of nephrite and shell beads to gift a beloved wife because no other material quite compares to the light in her eyes, or a likeness in memory of a father known for his strength and tenacity carved in ivory; a material so dangerous to come by, it takes at least four men to harvest a body that yeilds two pieces.

If they have oil, they might also have gold, but i don't think that's really all that much better in terms of exploiting indigenous peoples and damaging the environment and local ecosystems.

For services, i've mentioned before ways waterbenders fleeing the Fire Nation's genocidal raids in the south pole might make a living in the Earth Kingdom without giving away that they're waterbenders. I said stonecutting (carrying grit in the water makes it even easier) and drying grain for farmers (typically dried laying it out in the sun, if not done thoroughly enough you get mold). I could also see dehydrating fruit and veggies and mushrooms to keep them perserved getting an income, as well as laundry services. Canonically the best healers in the world are women from the north pole. Waterbending aids them in spiritual healing and perhaps physical healing as well, given that so much of wellness involves keeping body fluids where they need to be. One could charge a heavy fee for those skills and services.

A word about luxury imports vs imported houshold staples; what falls into which cattegory is subject to change as it's entirely based on how affordable and available various items are. For example, is something as ubiquitous and notable an aspect of the universe as tea affordable for all social classes? What about sugar? Foreign spices? Candles? Paper and ink? For simplicity's sake, I'll be going off of what is canonically or easily assumed to be available and frequently used in-universe as well as items imported into Native villages irl.

Rice is an easy starch to eat and store. I can easily see it used to suppliment a water tribe diet. Tea could be helpful for its caffeine, though it is not necessary especially if we assume they have fireweed to process into ivan chai which has B vitamins which also give's one energy.

With vegetables, buying them is a lot easier than buying soil, keeping it warm, and growing what they can. Potatoes are always a good idea, being a hearty starch with a lot of nutrients. Onions and garlic are quite flavorful. Fruit could also supplement nutrients that are hard to come by in such a meat-heavy and low-fiber diet. They preserve well dried or in jam and their sweetness makes them easier for children to eat. Dairy and soy products would be helpful with calcium deficiencies. Given their infamous fickleness, however, i think fresh fruits and dairy would be considered higher end items to be used up quickly before they spoil.

My heart wants them to have pilot bread/hardtack since unlike the other starches mentioned, it requires no prep to eat, and if it's packaged in a long, dark blue box with a sailor on it, so much the better. Vinegar and sugar are both flavorful and allow for more preservation techniques than freezing and fermenting alone, and so would be optimal to have. Whether or not they would buy up yeast and flower depends on if you think the Water Tribes would incorporate bread into their cultures, which i'm all for but some may think unnecessary. I don't think alcohol would serve any purpose but for sterilization, and if i'm honest, Water Tribesmen drinking gets a little too close to racist jokes for me to recommend writing no questions asked. Ginger and black pepper would probably be the most favored spices due to how compatible they would be to the flavor profiles of local foods, but other spices might also be common too.

Paper for ink and ink for paper would be a good investment for letterwriting and ordering specific goods rather than hoping a merchant will offer them. Theoricically, parchment and ink could be made domestically of skins and soot, respectively, but I'm not sure if that would be the more efficient use of resources or if imported paper and ink would be preferable.

When irl circumpolar people assimilated, the textile industry favored cotton, and so sturdy and often printed cottons were the defualt fabric brought into the villages. Without the circumstances leading to that (cotton plantations run on brutal slave labor and specific technological advancements that made it much easier to process) i think the fabic of choice would be linen. Linen is a much more low-maintinence and fiber to produce and its low elasticity makes it very durable. The antimicrobial properties make it a no brainer for medical uses (bandages, patient bedding, healer's smocks, just for a few examples) and the moisture wicking and cooling qualities would make it very attractive to a wife tending her oil lamp in a house that prioritizes insulation over ventilation or a hardworking hunter sweating into thick furs. Wool, with the way it insulates even when wet, might also be considered a good enough investment to import. Whether or not they have any sort of way to raise fiber domestically (some kind of fantasy musk-oxen, perhaps) is up for interpretation as canon doesn't seem to suggest one way or the other.

As far as for building and housewares: lumber and metal goods. Pots used by the irl Inupiat were typically carved of wood and water was boiled in them with hot stones rather than placing them over fire, ulu blades were traditionally sharpened slate, and arrowheads were shaped of bone or antler. Even scrap iron and steel can be repurposed for tools and art, making a good resource to have and probably a good deal for both sides of the trade. Wood was used irl, not always as the main building material, but almost always as a frame and typically for flooring. Storage caches were also typically wood as well as the stilt houses of King Island. Often the main source was driftwood as the environment and wildlife dependant lifestyle of the Inupiat made growing trees for lumber at such a scale close to impossible. A supply of well-treated, sturdy lumber would be good to have and use. If any of this was taken into consideration when Jianzhu was asking for a loan to get lumber to the Southern Water Tribe in Rise of Kyoshi, then it would come off a lot less like "the poor savages need our advanced wood boat technology" and more genuinely altruistic.

Thinking Ezra thoughts tonight. I’ve maintained for awhile that this man, when he has the opportunity, is incredibly physical in his affection. He’s spent so much of his life enclosed and isolated - either by choice or by horrible circumstance - that more often than not touch seems more precious a commodity than aurelac.

But I’ve been thinking about what that looks like after the Green. When he’s down an arm and far less sure of himself. When he is greedy not just for the pleasure of contact, but the comfort of it. But adjustment is a process, and reaching for you is not as easy as it once was. Even the simple comfort of sharing a bed is more frustrating than it used to be, the pleasure of holding you in his arms as he succumbs to sleep something that has become needlessly convoluted. Laying on his right side is awkward without the arm to brace himself and puts too much pressure on the remains of his ruined shoulder. Laying on his left side is better, but makes him miss that lost limb all the more dearly when the impulse to reach for you strikes, to pull you back against his chest or cradle the back of your head while you curl against him, and finds himself reaching for you with muscle and bone discarded worlds away.

But there is something to be said for tenacity, and that is something that Ezra - a man you once deemed as being both too stubborn and too long-winded to die - has in spades. So Ezra does what he does best: he negotiates. Bodily. A treaty of tactile compromise and zealous compensation. He’ll lie behind you, left arm curling under the pillow and under your head, trailing down your arm to find your hand and twine your fingers together, knotted over your heart. He’ll pull you to him this way, curling in close, hiking one long leg up over your hip and hooking his chin over your shoulder. And when you stir, free hand reaching back to ruffle through the mess of his hair and mutter, still half-sleeping: I’m right here, Ez. He’ll tuck his face into the curve of your neck, hiding a look of anguished relief between the darkness and the warmth of your skin, and he’ll whisper softly back: As am I, dearheart. As am I.

As the galaxy reels in the aftermath of galactic warfare, the mighty Venator Class assault ships, those heralded bastions of Republic strength, now lay dormant and dismantled. The stench of decay and despondency pervades the air as these once-proud leviathans are reduced to mere salvage, their noble history overshadowed by the brooding scrapyards of the Scrapper Guild.

I navigate the intricate lattice of metal, each piece a silent testament to the men and women who fought with honor and gallantry. Questions linger like spectres, probing the rationale behind the abandonment and despoliation of these vessels of victory. The answer, like the ships themselves, is enshrouded in enigma, a convoluted tapestry of political maneuvering and economic exigency.

Yet, amidst the wreckage, whispers of rebellion and resurgence permeate the air. Scrappers, though resigned to their labor, speak of a silent reverence for the fallen fleet. In the eerie stillness of Bracca’s eternal twilight, one can almost hear the echoes of battles long past, the clarion calls of commanders, and the valiant roars of starfighters in combat.

In the eyes of the Guild, these dismantled goliaths are but commodities of metal and machinery, their worth measured in credits. But to the seasoned veteran and the keen observer, they are monuments to the Republic’s glory days, testament to the tenacity and spirit of a people undaunted.

My sojourn on Bracca uncovers not just the physical dismantlement of starships, but an exploration into the soul of a galaxy, at once marred by the scars of war yet unyielding in its spirit. Amidst the corroding metal and decaying starfighters lies an indomitable will, an unspoken vow that the echoes of valor shall rise again from the ashes of despondency.

Here on Bracca, amidst the silent graves of Venator Class assault ships, the saga of the Republic is etched in rusted metal and silent echoes, a narrative of power, betrayal, and undying resilience. Another Pete Best extract, in which John and Pete try to mug a sailor, and Paul and George chicken out:

We had all the sex in the world. Money, however, was the commodity we were short of most. We talked about it frequently and tried to plan ways to raise more, but we needed it quickly and any long-term scheme would be useless. Yet there had to be some way other than holding up a bank.

The chance came one night when into the Kaiserkeller there stepped a real big spender, a German sailor who had to be the possessor of one of the fattest wallets in town. He was a husky guy in his mid to late thirties, so we guessed, with shoulders like an ox. And he enjoyed our music so much that he sent us all a drink on stage. Then another one – and another one! This was the kind of fan to have when you were broke. As the night wore on he dispatched a waiter to the stage with a message for us as well as the usual beer and schnapps. “He’s so happy with the Beatles,” the waiter said, “that he wants to take you out to have a meal after the session is over.”

Four of us took up the invitation: Stu would go home with Astrid as he always did. The rest of us relished the thought of a big nosh-up for free. At the restaurant the sailor kept the booze flowing freely and the atmosphere was very friendly, and that wallet was certainly fat when he produced it at the table. We all peered at it intently, fascinated. This was temptation, staring us squarely in the face. Drunken sailors had always been considered fair game in Hamburg amongst the pickpockets and waiter fraternity in the early hours of the morning. If ever there was a suitable case for mugging – this sailor was it.

When he left the table for a few minutes we all talked about the idea and to John and I it sounded good. Paul and George weren’t as keen, as they pointed out the dangers.

“He’s a pushover!” John and I persisted. “All we’ve got to do after we leave here is to get him in the right place, give him the old one-two and the wallet’s ours.” Paul and George weren’t really convinced, but grudgingly agreed to join in the venture.

It was around four in the morning when the sailor decided to call it a night and catch the train to bed (we never did find out where). The four of us trooped out into the icy November cold, ostensibly to see him off.

The route led through a couple of car parks and the plan was that we would trip him up in one of them, rough-house him a little, rip open his jacket and lift the wallet. But every time we thought that the moment to strike had arrive something happened to cause a postponement – such as a sudden passer-by appearing – and we would plod on again cheerfully with our intended victim.

As we neared the first likely mugging area Paul and George began to hang back while John and I strode on with the sailor. Then we could hear George complaining that he was feeling tired. The gap between us stretched longer and longer, until finally we heard Paul and George faintly saying ‘Tarrah!’ They had chickened out and fled for home.

Time was running out when Lennon and I leapt into action pinning the sailor against a car park gate. He knew the name of the game immediately and, despite all the liquor he had taken aboard, he didn’t appear to be very drunk as he desperately joined battle. John swung a mean punch at him and knocked him to his knees while I dived in to try to wrestle the wallet free. But it wasn’t going to be easy. The seaman, obviously a man of experience, fought back with the tenacity of a man who had probably seen it all before in the seaports of the world, and was soon up on his feet again.

A beefy fist smashed into Lennon, sending him back several feet. Then the sailor started to sling punches my way, but as we grappled in close I somehow managed to grab the wallet. But then, as Lennon dragged himself from the ground, the sailor dived a hand into the rear of his pants and in the dim light of the early hours of a winter’s morning we knew that we were looking down the barrel of a gun.

There was no way of telling whether or not it fired bullets or simply gas. And no time to find out. Before we could react his fingers were closing around the trigger, ready to squeeze. Simultaneously, Lennon and I charged at him, heads down, driven forward by sheer instinct rather than any thought of heroics.

We crashed into him as he fired, tumbling him backwards while cartridges flew above us into the night. Both of us lashed out with blow after blow to head and body until we thought he had taken enough punishment to enable us to escape. All we wanted now was to get the hell out of it, and we turned and ran.

Our eyes were already beginning to smart as we sped forward. Fortunately, the gun pumped only gas as the sailor loosed off another four or five shots in our direction. We managed to out-pace the fumes, never looking back, not knowing if he was scrambling to his feet to give chase.

We tore through the streets of Hamburg, scarcely slowing even when there were no tell-tale footsteps to be heard behind us. We had to cover nearly three miles to the Grosse Freiheit and our lungs were almost at bursting point when we literally flopped into John’s room at the Bambi Kino, where Paul and George were waiting up, eager for news of the mugging and, more important, to hear what share of the loot would be coming their way.

“What’d you get?” George enquired from his bed.

“Not a bloody penny!” Lennon gasped out miserably.

“A bloody nose and a lot of bloody bruises,” I said, equally flatly.

Then I revealed the harrowing story of how, when John and I had hurtled into the sailor as he stood gun in hand, I had dropped the wallet in the melée and left it there for him to retrieve. There was no sympathy from the other two Beatles. They simply fell about, choking on their laughter. The Beatles’ first – and last – escapade in the hit-and-run world of mugging had proved to be a complete disaster – and we were certain it wasn’t over yet, as we took stock of ripped jeans and our lungs slowly returned to normality.

Our eyes still smarted a little from the gas, although that was easy to bear compared with the thoughts of retribution that occupied us now. The sailor was surely not going to forget the four lads from the ‘Pool he had wined and dined so generously, who made sweet music but had a pretty lousy way of saying ‘Thanks, mate’. We reckoned he would be back, with a boatload of shipmates bent on rending us apart. Lennon and I were petrified as we turned in and I escaped into the darkness of my dungeon. As sleep came my last thoughts were that not only was tomorrow going to be another day, it could well prove to be judgement day, as well.

All the next day, Lennon and I were edgy, looking over our shoulders. On stage we peered through the smoky haze, expecting each minute to glimpse the sailor, teeth bared, waiting to pounce, but he never appeared. No boarding party stormed the Kaiserkeller thirsting for the blood of John Lennon and Pete Best. Perhaps he would show up the following night, but no. Nor the night after that, or any other night.

Gradually our fears diminished and our world returned to near-normality again (life could never really be described as normal in the St Pauli area). Maybe the sailor had had to set sail for some other dangerous port after that eventful night and had been unable to take his revenge. Strangely, in all the time we were in Hamburg, we would never see him again.

The sun beat down mercilessly upon the desolate wasteland, casting long shadows across the barren landscape as Syra ventured forth into the unknown. With her trusty blade strapped to her side and a sense of determination burning in her heart, she traversed the scorched earth, her eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of life amidst the chaos.

As she rounded a bend in the dusty trail, Syra stumbled upon a sight that gave her pause—a makeshift marketplace nestled amidst the ruins of a forgotten city. Tents and shacks made from salvaged scraps and tattered fabrics dotted the landscape, their inhabitants eking out a meager existence amidst the rubble and decay.

Curiosity piqued, Syra approached the marketplace cautiously, her senses on high alert for any signs of danger. The air was thick with the scent of sweat and smoke, mingling with the faint aroma of stale food and decaying refuse.

People bustled about, their faces weathered and worn by hardship, their eyes reflecting the harsh realities of life in the wasteland. Some bartered goods and supplies, while others huddled in small groups, exchanging whispered rumors and tales of survival.

Syra observed the scene with a mixture of fascination and wariness, her instincts telling her to proceed with caution. She knew all too well that in a world where trust was a rare commodity, danger lurked around every corner, waiting to pounce on the unwary.

Yet, amidst the chaos and despair, there was a glimmer of hope—a sense of resilience that refused to be extinguished. Syra couldn't help but admire the tenacity of these survivors, their determination to cling to life in the face of overwhelming odds.

As she mingled with the crowd, Syra kept her guard up, her hand never straying far from the handle of her machete. She traded sparingly, exchanging only what she could spare for supplies that might aid her on her journey through the wasteland.

But even as she moved through the marketplace, a nagging sense of unease gnawed at the edges of Syra's consciousness. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this place than met the eye—that beneath the facade of camaraderie and commerce, darker forces were at play, waiting to ensnare the unsuspecting in their web of deceit and betrayal.

With a final glance over her shoulder, Syra slipped away from the marketplace, her senses attuned to the dangers that lurked in the shadows. As she disappeared into the wasteland once more, she vowed to tread carefully, for in this world of chaos and uncertainty, survival was a game best played with caution and cunning.

Don asks FG to tackle food crisis

Prof Moses Efuntoye of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye on Wednesday advised the Federal Government to galvanise the nation’s rich human resources to invent urgent solutions to food, energy, and other challenges confronting the country now. Nigeria is facing food crisis with prices of major commodities skyrocketing in the last eight months. Food inflation also hit 32.4% in December 2023, an 8.71% jump from what was recorded in the previous year. Efuntoye said that this critical time demands the country adopt the China option; close her borders to the world, impress on citizens to begin to look inward, and use local content to innovatively address the mammoth needs. Efuntoye said this while delivering the 116th inaugural lecture of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye Ogun State, with the theme “The Triad of Toughness, Tenacity and Tameness in the Tale of Antibiotic Resistance.” The don has called for the setting up of a consortium of researchers drawn from the country’s universities to commence meaningful collaborative research toward finding solutions to the socio-economic, political, technological, food, and health issues. He said, “At a time in China’s history, the nation closed its doors to the world. Nigeria as a country has very rich resources of intellectual personnel in the sciences, engineering and technology, education, liberal arts, and humanities among others to solve our social, economic, cultural, educational, political, and technological needs. “We need to close up and engage in meaningful research across all disciplines that will impact our national life based on local contents”. He also advocated that the nation’s non-conventional universities such as Federal Universities of Agriculture, and Federal Universities of Technology find answers to critical issues facing the country within a specific time frame.
