When art becomes intense, loneliness emerges, clarity emerges, strangeness emerges. If it doesn’t go that far, it’s a lie. My past writing has been like wine, and not even the best wine. But from now on it will be like water - clear, bright, and rippling without overflowing - or so I hope. (Santoka, Teihon Santoka Zenshu)

POEMS OF TANEDA SANTOKA is a short and varied collection of Santoka’s haiku. Each translation is accompanied by the original Japanese text and English transliteration (romaji).

Earlier this week I reported on the very depressing for-profit fic pirating happening in certain corners of fandom—but (somewhat coincidentally, timing-wise) I also had the joy of reporting this story on fanbinding, and the work of the @renegadeguild! Featuring the words (and fanbinds) of the brilliant @celestial-sphere-press, @butterfingersbookbinding, and @fanboundbooks (who also talked about Renegade on the most recent Fansplaining episode).
Renegade's binders are strong proponents of the non-monetized gift economy—they truly embody the spirit of fanfiction, in my opinion, both in the communal way they share their work with fic writers and each other, and in the DIY way they approach making books:
There’s a strong parallel between the amateur, instinctive nature of fanfiction and the act of fanbinding. While plenty of fic is penned by formally trained writers, much of it is not. Tiffo, who binds as Fanboundbooks, likens the reverse-engineering involved in teaching oneself both activities. As writers, people try to figure out why stories work. Fanbinders collectively share the process of learning to turn that work into a physical object—tactile, clean, often beautiful. Fic is largely unencumbered by the forms and structures of traditional publishing, and fanbinders approach their work with the same spirit. “People will often say, ‘How do I do this?’ or ‘What’s the rule for this?’” Tiffo says. “The answer that we always try to throw in Renegade is, ‘This is what other people have done, but know that there is no rule to your book—you can make whatever you want.’”
It's a shame seeing people conflate the bad actors of the pirating situation—many of whom don't appear to be in fandom and seem motivated by pure profit—with the work of fanbinders at large, and seeing people scared to try out fanbinding because of the recent news. Not-for-profit fanbinding is just as legal as writing fanfiction, and I don't speak for all fic writers, but if someone ever bound one of my fics, I'd be so touched I would almost definitely weep. 😭

Work has been hectic so I am Very Late in posting this but! 28 February is my bookbinding anniversary date, so here's a belated post to celebrate the last two years of fanbinding!
I am so grateful for the amazing friends and community that u have found, many of whom I've had awesome opportunities to meet in person, all around the world! Thank you so much to all the authors I have bound for that inspire me, and to everyone at @renegadepublishing for all the enabling (no matter how much it hurts my wallet lol). It's truly been life changing so far, and I hope for many wonderful years to come.

one of my favorite things in fantasy and sci fi is when the setting of the work is in some ways absolutely better than our current setup which makes you go "god i wish i lived in this world" but as the story progresses you realize that the setting is also shittier than our current world in another, highly specific way that then makes you have to go "well maybe i can deal with this if it means not having to work to survive" or something similar

Yosa Buson is the second of the old haiku masters, writing between Basho (1644-1694) and Issa (1763-1827).
Widely known during his lifetime - more for his paintings than his poems - Buson’s notoriety and influence declined after his death only to be reestablished by Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), who immersed himself in Buson’s haiku, understanding Buson’s work as a precursor to his own.
Shiki - the father of modernist haiku - saw Buson as perhaps the greatest of the old masters, writing that Basho has the “reputation as the incomparable haiku poet,” but Buson is “equal to, or even superior to Basho.”
Still, aspects of Buson’s work remain underappreciated and overlooked. Specifically highlighted in this collection are Buson’s warmth and dynamic portrayals of longing.
Poems of Yosa Buson is a short and varied collection of Buson’s haiku. Each translation is accompanied by the original Japanese text and English transliteration (romaji).

Hi! Your fanbindings are absolutely gorgeous ^w^. I noticed you don't accept commissions, is there any way to put in a request for a fan binding? It's okay if not, just curious! Thanks <333
Hi! Thank you so much for the compliment!! And thanks for the ask - it's always good to clarify these things.
My answer depends on what you mean by "request."
If you mean "this author/fic/fandom is awesome and deserves some love, and I want to see what you would do for it," then the best way is to recommend it to me! My binding priorities generally focus on what I loved reading. Fair warning my list of "fanworks I want to bind" is somewhere at the 75+ count, and that is only for things I have intentionally slapped on the list. Tumblr doesn't allow polls or voting, but I have asked for input on my insta as to what fandoms I should push towards the top of my list and would be willing to receive some feedback on tumblr too.
(No promises tho, one reason I don't take commissions is so I can do what I want.)
If you mean "how can I request and receive a copy?" there's three ways: 1) be an author I want to bind for, 2) be a Renegade Bindery member and participant in the annual exchange - maybe I'll get assigned to make you a book!, and 3) be a close enough friend of mine I want to send you gifts.
A bonus fourth option could be if you want to do some kind of mutual fanwork (not just fanbinding!) exchange or collaboration. Say you're a fanartist and are doing fanart for a fic, and we are both interested in working together to incorporate art/fic together in a book. Or say you knit fandom themed items, and we do a gift exchange, knit item for book. Now, I might want to get to know you a bit first! Especially for a collaboration. But I've gifted books in these type of fandom gift exchanges before, and would be willing to do so again.
Basically what it boils down to is: I'm here to be excited about fandom and fics, preserving fics in hard copy, gifting books to authors, making friends, and in general participating in the fandom gift economy! And if you want to be an active participant too, be welcome to join in!
