The Land I Lost
Literally everything about Alec Lightwood in The Land I Lost makes me absolutely feral. The fact that he's trying to learn Indonesian for Magnus.
This entire passage:
Like? The scorn from the idiot Shadowhunters? Lily's sass? The way Alec puts his hand on his weapon, fully willing to literally fight in defense of Magnus's (or Lily's) honor?
The way he's absolutely convinced other Shadowhunters would try to murder him if they could get away with it but he uses his privilege to defend Lily.
This scene:
relatable as hell. I, too, am bad at faces at names.
The way Alec relates to Juliette's claim on her Downworlder children. The way he loves Max so fiercely.
This is literally from like 5 pages. Every single line of this entire short story is like one gut punch after another. I was giggling and kicking my feet while I read it. Alec and Lily's friendship is one of my favorite things and I love how hard Alec fights to make the world a better place and how he earns the trust of the Downworlders he protects.
Alec Lightwood is truly one of The Characters Ever. And I will never get over Alec and Magnus. They are the definition of love.

how much power is in the ring magnus give alec?
first, a little revisit to trsom
it's shown from scenes like this in the books that despite having the power to bring forward incapable feats or destruction, magnus doesn't want to use it, like at all. we get brief instances in the past where he used it and how much it affected him (killing his stepfather, creating earthquakes when he was upset). the status quo is set, magnus lightwood-bane and his immensely frightening, possibly corruptive magic will never accept each other's friend request again.
but then, there's this scene
the kind of power comes from the very heart of hell. we know warlocks are offsprings of demons, so it's safe to assume their heritage will somewhat show its influence in their magic. but this isn't your garden variety charm. from what the seelie girl trying to convey here, the ring literally reeks of magic from the deepest, most unpredictable and intimidating part of existence.
does alec know he's carrying a piece of magnus too-dangerous-to-not-be-unsealed-magic around him every day? and that there's no end magnus wouldn't go to, even if it's the part of himself he's terrified of, to keep alec safe?

Alec tugged at the front of Max's sailor suit. "That's a lot of ribbons there, buddy." Max nodded sadly.
"Too much ribbons."
"What happened to your sweater?"
"That's a fine question, Alexander. Allow me to unfold to you the tale. Max rolled his sweater in cat litter," Magnus related. "So he could look like daddy. Thus he must wear the sailor suit of shame. I don't make the rules. Oh, wait, yes, I do." He waved a reproving finger at Max, who laughed again and tried to grab for the glitter of rings.

Malectober Day 9: Books
As a child, Alec had always liked reading. He loved Isabelle and Jace, but sometimes, their loud, outgoing personalities got to be too much for him and he needed some time alone to recover. The Institute didn’t have a huge selection of novels, but there were dozens of anthologies of fairy tales, which Shadowhuters were supposed to study as an example of how mundanes recognised magic and wrote about it. He got through hundreds of these stories, some with beautiful illustrations, sitting in the library or his room or some quiet spot in the Institute where he wouldn’t be discovered.
As he got older, he read less, his time more taken up with weapons training or studying demons or worrying about his siblings. But after moving in with Magnus, Alec was surprised to discover something about the warlock that wasn’t immediately obvious.
Magnus loved reading. Despite all the partying, despite his outgoing personality, Magnus was also really happy just to stay in with a book. There were several large bookshelves scattered through his apartment, stacked with novels and spell books and histories and plays and thrillers and romances and scientific journals and anthologies of poetry. Many were in languages Alec couldn't read. Some, he suspected, were older than Magnus himself. Alec started to rediscover his childhood love of reading, working his way through the books in Magnus’s loft that interested him.
Today his attention had been caught by a slim volume bound in blue leather. He’d opened it to find it was, of all things, a book of love poems. Alec traced his fingers over the thin, crisp pages, reading words written by men and women long dead, addressed to their beloveds.
Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments…..How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…..I have spread my dreams under your feet……
Alec could see himself in these pages. He could see his love for Magnus, expressed more eloquently than he could ever hope to say himself.
I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times…..Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth; for thy love is better than wine……You have captivated me; let me stand tremblingly before you.
Alec turned a page and found a poem he recognised, one he had heard read at weddings. He ran his fingers over the words. My true-love hath my heart and I have his/By just exchange one for the other given/I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss/There never was a bargain better driven.
These were the words he most wanted to give Magnus, if he ever found the courage to say them aloud. Maybe he could leave the book somewhere where Magnus would find it— maybe with a little note saying, This is how I feel about you. Alec carefully replaced the book on the shelf, wondering if Magnus would let Alec read some of the poems to him. He wanted Magnus to know how much he meant to Alec, all the different ways Alec loved him.
