"The last Heir"
"No matter what's our social upbringing, no matter what or how much we own, we're all equal in the eyes of death. A father kisses his son's forehead, reassuring him a safe travel into the after life as the sons life escapes from his mortal coil. But the father knows the worst has yet to come. No longer able to bear anymore heirs due to their rapidly shrinking familial circle... realizing the perpetuation of his kingdom is no longer assured weighs heavily on his shoulders."

The ATLA renaissance shifting the fandom from Zutara towards Zukka without actually changing the ship dynamic is so fucking funny because most of the time it functions pretty well. However today I saw another 'oh Sokka had this forbidden crush on Zuko from the beginning' and. Look. What happened there? Seriously, did we watch the same show? Fucking nobody likes Zuko from the get-go! He's an acquired taste at best. Jet notably falls for Zuko at first sight under explicitly false pretenses. Sokka has both a brain and a decent understanding of Zuko's early role in the Fire Nation. He would not say that.

“Like a roaring star, he thundered down the long shoot, and Manon moved with him, meeting each gallop of his powerful body, each step in time with the beat of the wyverns locked in the belly of the mountain. Abraxos flapped his wings open, pounding them once, twice, gathering speed, fearless, unrelenting, ready…
Fast as lightning arcing across the sky, he plummeted toward the Gap floor…
Down into hell, into eternity, into that world where, for a moment, she could have sworn that something tightened in her chest. She did not shut her eyes, not as the moon-illuminated stones of the Gap became closer, clearer. She did not need to. Like the sails of a mighty ship, Abraxos’s wings unfurled, snapping tight. He tilted them upward, pulling against the death trying to drag them down. And it was those wings, covered in glimmering patches of Spidersilk, that stayed strong and sturdy, sending them soaring clean up the side of the Omega and into the starry sky beyond.”

Zuko and Azula in "The Beach"
Lately I think a lot about "The Beach" episode [x], especially about this small detail of great teamwork Zuko and Azula have during the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zuko is looking ahead, directly facing their rivals (who had the control of the ball at this moment) but his body is clearly lowered to the ground, left hand most likely touching the ground, legs bent and widely spaced - a clear contrast to Mai standing near and how he stood before on two separate occasions
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is why I think Zuko willingly create an opportunity for Azula, so she could jump higher - something she definitely used to their team’s advantage. If Azula simply jumped on her brother’s back when he wasn’t expecting it or wasn’t ready, he would probably just fall face down from the impact but as the scene shows, he had no such problem nor was angry about it in the following scenes.
During the game sequences there was no dialogue shown between our protagonists, so it is hard to determine if Azula in advance called Zuko to give her a “lift” or Zuko offered on his own, or did they were that much in sync they just acted without thinking. Regardless I like this few seconds long interaction, because for me it implies how they trusted each other despite all the rivalry and bitterness from previous episodes. Like Zuko trusted Azula won’t use that moment to hurt/humiliate him by overuse of force, the same as Azula trusted in Zuko’s strength and that he won’t mess up by losing his balance. It is a small thing but no less sweet to see them working well together when fighting for the same goal - what reminds me a bit their teamwork from the previous season finale.
Interestingly, it was also the second time Zuko assisted Azula in scoring against their rivals while not scoring himself any point on screen. The first time happened almost right at the beggining of the game (second from total five sequences)

while each girl have the solo sequence of winning a point:
Azula's first attack,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
later Ty Lee landing on the net
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Mai kicking the ball (and presumably scoring)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while Zuko’s two actions are shared only with his younger sister while there is no sense of competition between the siblings, something contrasting a lot with some previous and later episodes.
Azula is bossy and competitive through most of the episode and her brother lets her be that without a complaint. Azula and Zuko get along pretty well and A) do not argue (with the exception of the campfire scene and then they argue not even for the whole scene itself) and B) don't get on each nerves the way they do in the palace, with Ozai's presence looming in the back of their mind. I absolutely adore this episode, as it humanizes all our Fire Nation characters by showing them as teenagers outside the war zone but also giving us a bit of insight into what Azula and Zuko could be if Ozai didn't pit them against each other. And they could be a great team!

Jon Snow's Perpetual Princehood
Promise me, she had cried, in a room that smelled of blood and roses. Promise me, Ned. The fever had taken her strength and her voice had been faint as a whisper, but when he gave her his word, the fear had gone out of his sister's eyes.
"Mother." There was a sharpness in Robb's tone. "You forget. My father had four sons."
"The Night's Watch will make for Hardhome. I ride to Winterfell alone, unless…" Jon paused. "… is there any man here who will come stand with me?" The roar was all he could have hoped for, the tumult so loud that the two old shields tumbled from the walls.

Something that's been bothering me for a while is the way Cassandra Clare did a complete 180 on James as a character.
The James we were promised way back when the Midnight Heir and Nothing But Shadows came out is nothing like the James we see in the main series. And it makes me viscerally angry. James in the last hours is well…it pains me to say this because I do love him, but... until chot he’s not that interesting.
Most of his struggles that were set up in the short stories magically resolved themselves before the series began. He’s no longer insecure about how different he looks compared to other shadowhunters, suddenly he’s just as quick and witty as will and matthew are, and everyone loves him and wants to marry him! When the James we were promised was a social outcast, who was reminded everyday that not only is he not like his father, he is worse.
James in the Midnight Heir is shown to be jealous of his parent’s perfect love. When he himself is suffering because he’s madly in love with Grace and she just broke things off with him. We also see this hint of resentment towards Will for being so “perfect”.
Which shows up again in Nothing But Shadows. James constantly compares himslef, and is being compared to Will. Will is so handsome, and James is so odd looking. Will is able to make everyone laugh and everyone likes him, James is awkward and often does not know how to express himself.
And we can see in the way James talks about this that he’s annoyed at his father for making him feel like he is inadequate. And then he gets to the academy and all the kids start to make fun of him for the way he looks. They keep telling him how odd he looks, that he looks like a goat. And then his powers manifest and once again he is reminded just how different he is from everyone else.
The Last Hours was originally pitched as a love triangle with a Herondale in the middle. So when i first found this out i thought this story was finally going to challenge the godawful “Herondales love but once” rule. And this would also fit into this idea that James is somehow “wrong”. He’s not extroverted and witty like his father. He has demon blood and demonic powers, which creates a wedge between him and other shadowhunters.
And on top of that, he loves two people! One of them being an amazing shadowhunter warrior from a respectable family with close connections to the Herondales (Cordelia). And the other not so proper, maybe kind of evil, weird daughter of a mad woman who hates the Herondales (Grace). So the story wouldn’t just be about James choosing between two women he loves, but also about him being torn between the expectations of his family and society, and his “dark side”.
But then Cassie made the gracelet and erased all of James’s problems. And we ended up with yet another boring love triangle that no one asked for…
