I’ve been working hard on creating new personal projects around books and stories I love and I want to share the illustrations I did for one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes adventures ! I hope you like them :-)
I’ve posted more on my ig if you’d like to see
we all know that the sky's the limit when praising jeremy's acting, but i'll always be most in love with his eyes. he conveys so much power and depth through them. as this interaction with roylott plays out, holmes engages with him (for the most part) icily and concisely. but underneath it all, jeremy's eyes burn with an intensity and fire that's almost palpable through the screen. his revulsion towards roylott is visceral.
additional notes: watson's jump at the door opening. the iconic moment when holmes gulps at roylott bending the poker. all fantastic.
and now what more is there to say than i thank you, mrs. hudson, just another client.
"I really do have some scruples taking you tonight. There is a distinct element of danger."
"If I can be of assistance."
"That is very kind of you."

This scene is one of my favorites from the Speckled Band. Top's normal version. Bottom is with VHS effects. Couldn't decide the better between them. ID in alt.
I just noticed something in Granada Holmes and it's the cutest thing. :)
I think when Holmes and Watson wait until Roylott has gone to bed so they can break into his house investigate the case, Holmes gave Watson his coat to sleep on. :,) Look!
[I'm not sure because I have looked at it for too long now and now I think it's possible that it's Watson's own coat. He probably wore it over his suit jacket. But I will shut my eyes to that because I have a new headcanon now and I think it's too cute to be wrong. :D]
I think it could be Holmes's coat, because he wore it earlier in the episode ...
... and he discarded it once they went to hide in the cottage. (Also, wow, that is a beautiful shot.)
Also please don't forget this is a few hours after this interaction:
I mean it would be so kind and considerate to give Watson his coat to sleep on. Holmes really has no troubles staying awake, and he already frowned upon Watson's need for sustenance twice in that episode, and I just like to imagine that scene ... Holmes saying I Don't Want To Endanger You and Watson saying Forget It I'm Coming With You and Holmes is so touched and grateful ... And then it's getting later and later and Watson is getting tired and he half expects Holmes to chide him for that - but instead Holmes takes his coat and says Take This, It's Cold, Lay Down For An Hour. :,) Holmes is already so good with Helen Stoner in that story, taking her seriously and saying all the right things to make sure she knows he's helping her, I feel like he's at top social skills here. Ah yes, Holmes the heartless calculating machine, right. :)
Michael Cox had this to say about the snake in granada's "the speckled band:"
“…Our snake was a harmless one but I imagine that most human beings have an instinctive aversion to reptiles, so I have enormous admiration for Jeremy Kemp and Denise Armon, who allowed the creature to crawl over them. I remember asking Mike Grimes if the snake had a name. ‘Yes,’ he said, ‘it’s called Kevin.’ I was expecting something out of Rudyard Kipling and thought that Kevin was an unusual name for a snake. ‘Not at all,’ said Mike, ‘I gave it to him because he reminds me of someone I once worked with….'”
