Christopher Hill's 'The World Turned Upside Down: Radical Ideas During the English Revolution', first published 1972 (Viking Press).
In 'The World Turned Upside Down' Christopher Hill studies the beliefs of such radical groups as the Diggers, the Ranters, the Levellers and others, and the social and emotional impulses that gave rise to them. The relations between rich and poor classes, the part played by wandering 'masterless' men, the outbursts of sexual freedom, the great imaginative creations of Milton and Bunyan - these and many other elements build up into a marvellously detailed and coherent portrait of this strange, sudden effusion of revolutionary beliefs. (Penguin, 2020)
On Hill:
Christopher Hill was born John Edward Christopher Hill in York, England on February 6, 1912. He attended Balliol College, Oxford University and later became the master of the college from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. In 1940, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, before becoming a major in the intelligence corps in the Foreign Office from 1943 until the end of World War II. He was a Marxist historian whose work examined the role of economic factors in the events of 17th-century England. His works included The English Revolution 1640, Intellectual Origins of the English Revolution, God's Englishman, Reformation to Industrial Revolution, AntiChrist in 17th-Century England, Milton and the English Revolution, The World of the Muggletonians, The Experience of Defeat, and Liberty Against the Law. He died on February 23, 2003 at the age of 91. (Google Books, nd)
[I'm not able to link the pdf of the text here, but it is available in my sweeties document or through careful googling]
I found out about this through Georgie Carr's brilliant writing on 'Triangle of Sadness'.
"On one level, Östlund seems to posit a direct relationship between an excess of vomit and an intensity of critique. In contrast to the radical tradition of “the world turned upside down,” which aims to write a new history from below, Östlund instead renders society merrily askew." (Carr, 2022)
I abandoned this film in favour of spending time tickling my lover's arsehole in their sleep and couldn't dream of articulating my thoughts on the film as well as Carr does.
I could say: Östlund has created a work that nudges at style, substance, and box-office sales, but manages to rock the boat only in his definition of the word 'satire'.
But why bother? Here is Carr's article:

Jamie and Claire share a s---ty moment in deleted 'Outlander' scene
In the world of Outlander, the s--- regularly hits the fan — but Claire takes that quite literally in a season 6 deleted scene.
Video 📹 clip from Entertainment Weekly video
EW can exclusively share this deleted scene from episode 6, "The World Turned Upside Down," in which Claire (Caitriona Balfe) tries to get to the bottom of what could have caused the MacNeils to fall ill and spread a deadly disease on the Ridge. Jamie (Sam Heughan) visits her in her surgery to see what she's up to and is aghast to find her examining human feces, as she searches for a sign of bacteria that she recognizes.
Outlander is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on Sept. 6. The Collector's Edition boasts an array of bonus content, including deleted scenes like the one above, "untold" scenes that fill in the stories of fan-favorite characters, blooper reels and more.
Season 6, which was abbreviated from 12 episodes to 8, concluded its run back in May. But the cast of the Starz hit are already hard at work on season 7, which we can only assume will premiere sometime in 2023.
Tumblr media
"What we can say is there will definitely be conclusion to some of this, some of these threads will have been tied up early on," Caitriona Balfe previously told EW of the next season. "And we will then have a lot of new characters join that are going to be very meaningful to the series."
Indeed, one of those new characters has already been announced — the adult version of William Ransom, Jamie's bastard son and the adopted son of Lord John Grey (David Berry). Charles Vandervaart is joining the cast to don William's red coat.
Executive producer Maril Davis also teased a super-sized seventh season and the arrival of the American Revolution. "This is our biggest season yet," she said. "We have so many storylines. So many different places. The trajectory — we cover so much terrain. I really feel sorry for our production designer, art department, costume designer and her team. It's such a huge season. We almost can't wrap our arms around it. It's not only the extra four episodes, it's just, the Revolution is here. It's going to be really exciting."
Watch the clip above for more.
Remember… Outlander (Season 6) is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on 6 September 2022. — Entertainment Weekly

I've gotta do Richard Feversham for this one.
Tumblr media
Richard is from my project The World Turned Upside Down, set during the English Civil War period (the 1640s). A former actor, he's now a sort of proto-anarchist trying to carve out a life and protect his friends from both the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. He becomes a sort of older brother figure to Aibhilin, the Irish refugee who is the main character of the story.
Richard is arguably chaotic good, but he would never call himself that. He prefers the term "bastard." He has his own tag on my blog where you can see all his bastardy exploits in the name of...weirdly enough, kindness.
Anyway, he's very obviously based on British comedian Rik Mayall and I regret nothing.
