You Have To Chase It
Author: arthurandhisswordbros
Rating: M
Setting: Modern AU, Post 5x13
Word Count: 41,938
Summary:
“Oh, I don’t know who he really is—no one does,” she says. “Although, some people think he’s probably a grad student doing some avant-garde project for a thesis or something. Others think the whole account is just an elaborate advertisement for Budweiser.”
Arthur doesn’t understand most of what she just said but nods anyway.
Squinting her eyes, she gauges his confusion regardlessly. “It’s someone pretending to be the famous sorcerer. See here, this is his most recent tweet.” At Arthur’s odd look, she clarifies, “It’s like a message that everyone can see.”
@asorcerersays: Guys why did he have to be so hot and like,,,funny? Like it’s been forever and I still miss him. He was pretty dumb though.
Arthur knows his face must look disgusted. “For everyone to see?”
Or, Immortal!Merlin goes on Twitter to complain about his dead king. Unrelatedly, Arthur joins Twitter.
Comments: Oh boy was this fic ever *chef’s kiss* I absolutely loved Merlin and Arthur’s twitter interactions (even though the didn’t realize they were actually talking to each other *cries*). And I honestly loved the original characters and Arthur’s found family he makes. The build up to when Merlin and Arthur finally meet in person!!!! Incredible. Read this fic if you haven’t! You won’t regret it!

Remembering the toxic hellscape that was 2015-2019ish SU fandom and just how much hate the show got is really insane when you rewatch the show after it's been a while. Like the show is good what the hell were any of these people talking about
#do NOT quote me on those numbers i pulled them straight out of my ass#like the ending was rushed and the diamonds didnt get to be fully developed but liek#the whole reason that was the case is there was an entire 6th season planned#and then the show got axed early because rebecca sugar and crew refused the back down on the rupphire wedding.#and even rushedness aside like the point of the show was never that you should hug fascists and forgive people no matter what#the diamond were rose's (and his) dysfunctional family whose personal suffering became the basis for the cruelty of gem society#bismuth in The Real World would have been right to want to kill the diamonds as a force of revolution#but the point of the show is that even the most complicated people are still people who can change. even if you dont forgive them#even steven quartz universe the most loving boy in the world very obviously does not like being around the diamonds. but that is how it is#it was a children's show that emphasized compassion and communication and family as themes. of course steven didnt kill the diamonds lol#i really fully believe the stevenbomb format (which was not the crew's choice or fault) cooked peoples' brains#you had months between major arcs so every wrongdoing by a character had months to be warped and misinterpreted and so no resolution could#ever satisfy fans who were festering with their own opinions for way too long#like these arcs looking back are not that long and they resolve in fairly reasonable manners but they took fuckin forever in real time to#wrap up#and ppl on the internet with no other hobbies than arguing made the fandom suck to be in and gave su a bad name#even if you dont like steven universe i think the amount of vitriol thrown at the show is/was fucking INSANE for what it is lmaooo#people were so so jolly to accuse rebecca sugar (a jewish lady) of being a fascist/fash sympathizer and paint every writing shortcoming or#morally dubious character action as a sign of pure fuckin evil#ok that was a long ass fuckin rant in the tags i am so sorry i'm just kind of opinionated on this matter as i am all matters#i've been rewatching su with my dad lately and this very normal and well paced and fun watchthrough experience has been illuminating#just how insane and uncalled for the hellish discourse sphere around su was/is#i say was/is i have no idea what su discourse is like nowadays. i'm too scareds to look in the su crit tag

rewatching house led to me infodumping at my mother about ao3 and gen z purity culture and honestly . if she didn't want these things to happen to her she shouldn't have had children with a man so incredibly neurodivergent
#there was a logical progression to the infodump . but i fear it was only logical in an adhd way#bc my friend went ''u can rlly tell this is early 2000s bc they wouldn't let him say things like that today''#which led to the ''they Could theoretically make it but like . toned down and also no character would ever be able to agree w him''#which led to the thing of how audiences seem unable to separate depiction from endorsement#like the whole ''if a character is transphobic and nobody in-world calls them evil and wrong then the creator must be transphobic'' thing#which led to the tag system on ao3 and the proship/anti thing abt whether the existence of the archive warning system means they're —#- endorsing/supporting works that contain 'problematic' themes and content#which led to me ranting abt the reasons Why ppl create dark media (eg a story abt csa could be written by a nonce or a survivor)#and my mother was just Sat There like 🧍🏻‍♂️ bc she's a 60 yr old woman and doesn't care about fanfiction or proship/anti discourse#i do this rant/infodump a Lot tho like it's on my mind very often . i love rambling for nearly an hour abt stupid internet culyure#also the quote i think best sums up my entire stance on the proship vs anti thing is from sarah z's video on it#''i am a tax paying adult woman not a member of a fucking fandom war sports team'' which is so me except that i'm a man n i don't pay taxes#((i'm not a tax evader i just don't meet the threshold to pay them))#anygay . i get on a plane in like 15 hours and i need to sleep#jay screams into the void

People bashing the monster Hua Cheng trend for ~ruining the themes for the novel~ as if people haven’t been doing that to their original canons since fanfiction and fanart first came into being………
as if old school fans of Sherlock Holmes didn’t ignore the fact that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted the stories to just be over by resurrecting Sherlock in their own stories way before ACD went “YE GOD FINE I’LL BRING HIM BACK JUST STOP COMING TO MY HOUSE AND THROWING YOURSELF AT MY FEET TO SOB ABOUT HOW I LITERALLY RUINED YOUR LIFE”………
as if people haven’t been deliberately making the Cthulhu mythos less appallingly, unnecessarily racist, antisemitic, and xenophobic for literal decades because HP Lovecraft’s bigotry was often Too Much even for his period-typical racist, antisemitic, and xenophobic contemporaries………
as if people in old school Star Trek zines didn’t undermine Gene Roddenberry’s entire idea of the magical space future having humanity evolve beyond our petty bigotries by writing homophobia toward Kirk/Spock (whether explicitly or in how they wrote the relationship/usually manifested as something we in the 21st century would call internalized homophobia)………
as if people haven’t been deliberately undermining the prescriptivist, essentialist, and fundamentally misogynistic take on gender in the Bespectacled Teen Wizard books (which loves to police and shame girls and women for anything about them that gets considered “mannish” or “masculine,” like Rita Skeeter’s ~notably large hands~ and Millicent Bulstrode being beefy and Not Pretty In The Face Department, but also shames and polices girls and women for being “too girly” and “too feminine,” e.g., Cho Chang, Fleur Delacour, Lavender Brown, basically all of the “other girls” whom Hermione, Ginny, Luna, Tonks, and sometimes Angelina Johnson are supposed to Not Be Like) since 15+ years before Joanne publicly revealed herself to be a raging transphobe and open misogynist………
as if one of the most popular wishes in the Hannibal fandom hasn’t always been “Will Graham has a nice day” when the entire point of the series is “Bryan Fuller refuses to let Will Graham have a nice day because he’s decided that actually, Will Graham is horny about his perpetual lack of nice days and about the cannibalistic psychiatrist/performance art serial killer who has dedicated himself to making every day the worst possible day of Will Graham’s life, but like, in a romantic, horny way”………
Like, seriously, come on.
“Monster Hua Cheng undermines the themes of the novel!! Monster Hua Cheng is, uhhh, ABLEIST because, ummmmm, BECAUSE I SAID SO!!! Monster Hua Cheng is bad and wrong and nobody should enjoy it, how dare you enjoy anything that isn’t 100% canon-approved!!!!”
Just say that you’re vanilla about monster romance and that you don’t understand how fanfiction works, then go

Unpopular opinion but I kind of miss when blogs had a song that would start playing if you visited it in your browser (on a desktop or laptop). That way you could get the proper vibe for your blog for anyone who visited. Welcome to my lair, here’s my soundtrack.

FINALLY PUBLISHED PART 2. I AM SO HAPPY. HAVE SOME PIRATES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top row: Phoenix the Cat & Cat the Phoenix (no relation)
Bottom row: Brook "The Beast" Broster & Otho the Demolisher
You can see more of the Birds of Prey Pirates on AO3 in the published scripts and concept art for my queer buddy-comedy fantasy-adventure graphic novel, The Blacksmith!
#my art#my ocs#the blacksmith#character design#trans characters#non binary characters#pirates#alt-text#image descriptions#queer fantasy#As always if you are visually impaired and read my image descriptions please know that your feedback is so very welcome.#the pirates show up in part 2#digital illustration#I'm just saying if you want to have an active influence on a whole-ass graphic novel literally all you would have to do is comment on ao3#listen it's a small fandom but that just means that you become one of my top 10 all-time favorite strangers on the internet.#like the story is fully realized in its plot and themes so I'm not going to pull that kind of bullshit where the writing is#compromised based on what the author thinks people want to see. but if one of my seven readers were to comment something like#'gee I sure wish I could see more characters who have XYZ traits I don't get to see elsewhere in media'#then you better fucking believe I am now looking for opportunities to organically include all the X's Y's and Z's I possibly can#like it's not a promise or a guarantee that I'll be able to include everything people want but if I found out that#someone who loved my story wanted a character with their exact disability then like. I mean I have a lot of disabled characters#there's no reason one of them can't have what you have and there's no reason I can't learn a lot while I research how to do it well.#that's just an example since the story is pretty fundamentally about disability as the plot progresses#the protagonist is physically disabled in a similar way to myself. he also has adhd. the other protagonist has autism. and they're both gay#well one is gay and the other is more specifically pan demisexual and transgender#Phoenix and Cat are best friends but the names really are a coincidence. they both had those names before they met#the story is about a blacksmith who forms an unlikely friendship with a mysterious warrior as they go on a quest together#the story spans a lot of genres but ultimately the vibe is very Avatar the Last Airbender but for grown-ups.#but not like in the 'needlessly gritty and miserable way' like in the 'there are fun sex scenes and less restrictions on blood and tone'#it def has some intense dark scenes but those are not there just for sexy prestige flavor points. this isn't Game of Thrones.

Thinking about the raven cycle and that exy book and of course on one hand one of those was published professionally and the other was uh. not. and the other thing is that I did not particularly enjoy Kandinsky and therefore I also didn’t enjoy a series populated entirely by Kandinsky but more boring and less magic.
like cmon. if you want a Fucked Up Blorbo Ronan is RIGHT there.

Seeing more and more blogs without a [username].tumblr.com site which means you can only view their blogs in tumblr.com/[username] mode, and I realized just the other day that nowadays you have to manually go to your blog settings and toggle the "enable custom theme" switch to have a browser site activated.
I REALLY recommend activating this! Especially if you're an artist or if you have a themed blog, like if you reblog fanart for a specific fandom or ship. First and foremostly you can change the whole theme if you want to, you can really just go wild with building your personal aesthetic for your page.
But what I think is even more important, is that you NEED to "enable custom theme" to enable access to your archive!* The link [username].tumblr.com/archive doesn't work if you don't have this enabled!
If you post art or archive fanart or fandom content of any kind, letting people access your archive makes it so much easier for people (and yourself) to find older art on your blog or to look for something you drew a while ago that they remember loving and want to look at again.
We talk lots about how on Tumblr old art gets to circulate, and the archive is part of how that works. It's a really useful tool in finding good content that isn't brand new. And especially if you are good at tagging, it's very easy to filter the archive to find ship content or meta or fics, whatever you want to find.
*edit: It seems that the ability to see the archive actually has to do with the Visibility toggles. You can have custom theme deactivated and still access the archive if your blog is set to visible without an account and/or searchable on Tumblr and through search engines. Something like that, it seems like for some people... it also just glitches? IDK I didn't expect for this to take off. I'm just some guy on the internet. HOWEVER. I still recommend activating custom theme for several reasons that people have pointed out in different tags and reblogs. All of these toggles are under "edit appearance" or by going to your Settings and then navigating over to your Blog Settings. Peace ✌️

What makes JKR's shitshow even harder to process is that she didn't just ruin a book series. Harry Potter was an entire subculture. Like Star Wars and Star Trek fans, Harry Potter fans dedicated their lives and careers to the series. I don't know if I'd call it "underground," but liking Harry Potter got you beaten up when I was in school, so it was more of a dedicated indie culture than a mass-appeal fanbase.
Harry Potter was so huge that fan works developed their own followings. Potter Puppet Pals racked up hundreds of thousands of followers and was nearly as relevant as the series itself. For fanfiction, Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality got so big that it has a Wikipedia page. The band Harry and the Potters spawned the wizard rock music genre. A Very Potter Musical developed a fanbase and launched Darren Criss's career.
Harry Potter also has extensive ties to fandom history. Everyone in my generation (millennials) remembers coming home from school to read Harry Potter fanfiction on the Internet. Today, most people just post their stories on Wattpad or Archive of Our Own. But at the time, the fanbase was splintered between fanfiction.net and dozens of individual websites and forums, some made for specific ships. Since they all had individual hosts, a lot of those sites have been lost to time.
And there's the infamous My Immortal fanfiction, which is an Internet legend with people still searching for the author. Everybody read that one (and laughed at it) in middle school.
Pre-social media, fan sites like The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet had massive followings because they were one of few sources for news, theories, essays and fan content. Some of these sites still exist after being around for over a decade and building their own legacy.
Before Deathly Hallows came out, fans were so desperate to know what happened that Mugglenet published a book called What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Falls in Love and How Will the Adventure Finally End? Yep...Harry Potter was so big that people wrote separate books about what would happen in an upcoming book.
And that's not mentioning all the book release parties, Harry Potter-themed events, monuments, fan films, restaurants and even a theme park. A lot of fandoms have those, but Harry Potter infiltrated every aspect of popular culture.
Today, there's a thriving culture of "Harry Potter adults" with themed weddings, baby showers and Etsy stores. Putting your Hogwarts house in your Instagram bio is pretty much a prerequisite for joining the "bookish" community. Warner still produces new content, like the Fantastic Beasts series, although we've all seen what a disaster that's been.
Everyone has at least a few memories associated with Harry Potter even if it's just watching the movies. I had great memories associated with Harry Potter. But looking back at the subculture, history and thousands of fan works, it doesn't seem fun anymore. Studying the fandom or being part of it comes with an awkward tension because you don't want to seem like you're condoning JKR's bigotry but can't divorce her from the series. This subculture was spawned by a woman who turned her legacy of magic and wonder into one of abuse and hatred.
I don't expect people to write paragraphs about how much they hate JKR every time they post about Harry Potter, but it's still uncomfortable to see people make new content or wear their Harry Potter Etsy tote bags like nothing happened. Even if they clarify that they don't support her, it's just a weird, tense situation for everybody.
People dedicated years of their lives to running Harry Potter fan sites, writing fanfiction, cosplaying characters and making fan movies. If I were in that situation, I'd have a mild identity crisis. I'd ask myself "Did I waste all those years? Should I delete my content? Where do I go from here?"
So ultimately, JKR didn't ruin "just" a book series or even "just" a fandom. She tanked an entire culture, which inspired people to look at Harry Potter more critically. The issues that people brought to the light tainted the series's legacy even without JKR's personal issues.
Once, Harry Potter was a series for generations. Now, former fans hope that the series fades into irrelevancy. Unfortunately, JKR didn't just tarnish her legacy--she took decades of history, millions of fans and a worldwide subculture along with her.

One of the most generally useful things to come out of Hbomberguy's plagiarism video and Todd in the Shadows' similar video on misinformation is how they bring transparency to the internet phenomenon of "I made up a guy to get mad at".
Seriously, I've seen people make up a lot of stupid shit on the internet over the years and it's often just a manipulative attempt to paint a group of marginalized people in a bad light.
That's the TL;DR version of this post.
Tumblr media
ANYWAY here is the long version
Those videos are mostly about James Somerton's plagiarism of other queer people's work. However I'd like to talk about that 20-30% of Somerton's original writing- and oh boy. It's mostly about complaining about White Straight Women and misgendering well-known trans creators such as Rebecca Sugar and calling Becky Albertalli a straight woman while it's pretty common knowledge that she was forced to out herself as bi because she received so much harassment over "being a cishet woman who appropriates LGBT+ stories".
One thing that irks me especially is how in his Killing Stalking and Gay Shipping videos Somerton brings up how straight women/ teen girl shippers exploit gay men for their personal sexual fantasies. This gets brought up several times in his videos.
Being all up and arms about Somerton being a "White Cis Gay Who Hates Women and Queer People tm" is not that useful because the kind of rhetoric he's using is extremely common in fandom and LGBT+ spaces on Tumblr, TikTok and Twitter. We really don't need to bring Somerton's identity to this since he is in no way an unique example.
It's hypocritical to make this about an individual person when I've seen A TON of posts, tweets and videos where queer people talk about these Sinister Straight Women who are supposedly out there fetishizing and exploiting queer men. It's pretty clear to me that this is just an excuse to shit on women and queer people for having any sexual interests. At worst these comments are spreading misinformation about BL, a form of media that has been excessively studied by both Asian feminists and Asian queer women.
This all sounds really familiar and I think it's good that people are calling it out as what it is: misogyny and transphobia. I'd also point out the potentially racist motives behind being this hypervigilant about Asian media.
People can absolutely be misogynist regardless of gender or orientation. I really don't know why we need to create some kind of made up enemy to get mad at. I actually think it's almost sinister how "anti-fujoshi" people call Slash shippers and fujoshi misogynists or claim that they have internalised misogyny while being dismissive about women's interests and creative pursuits under Japanese obscenity laws, China's censorship, book bans in American schools and various other disadvances that are part of being a queer and/or female creator.
I think we shouldn't be naive about the bad faith actors who want to turn queer people against each other. For example Fujoshi.info mentions anti-gender (TERF, GC etc) movement using this kind of rhetoric as well.
Anyway if you want to read more:
- about the false info around BL fandom fujoshi.info
-There is the scholar Thomas Baudinette who studies gay media in Japan. Here is a podcast with him and the scholar Khursten Santos
-James Welker is a BL scholar as well. Here is a podcast interview about the new international BL article collection he edited.
-I've already talked about this Youtube channel by KrisPNatz and his great Killing Stalking video that actually engages with the themes of the manhwa
- There is also HR Coleman's thesis DO NOT FEED THE FETISHIZERS: BOYS LOVE FANS RESISTANCE AND CHALLENGE OF PERCEIVED REPUTATION where she interviews 36 BL fans and actually breaks down why fetishization has become such a huge talking point in the fandom discourse. Spoilers, it's mostly about young queer people and women being worried that they will get judged and pathologized for their interest in anything sexual.
-Great podcast about Danmei and censorship with Liang Ge
