This was entirely tangential to this post from @utilitycaster which is why this is its own post, but the tags made me think about what feels most compelling about Liliana to me, and it's really because there's such an interesting approach to redemption in terms of the sunk cost fallacy to be had there.
There have been plenty of comparisons between Liliana and Essek, but I don't think they're really situations that can be compared. Essek had done one horrible thing (that was of relevence to the story; it is implied that he's taken other actions that he feels were wrong, but we don't know what those entail nor do the Nein care enough to ask, so per narrative convention, they do not matter for analysis) and was only still involved in it to the extent that he couldn't take it back, so to survive he had to continue covering his tracks. But he was also incentivized to otherwise act in alignment with the group that was not those on behalf of whom he had made terrible choices, because he was still living in the Dynasty, and as such wasn't actively perpetuating those actions beyond the cover up.
Liliana on the other hand is acting with the Vanguard and has been furthering if not personally committing atrocities on their behalf for a number of years, continuing to the present. Like Essek, she believes her involvement in the cause to be a difficult choice that was made for noble reasons, and now can't see a way out. But she is also relieved to be told to stay, though at the point that they discuss her leaving, she is alone and outside the immediate range of contact or oversight from the Vanguard. It seems reasonable that she could disappear with a decent headstart, and perhaps become untraceable quickly enough to be safe from anyone following. With this context, returning to the Vanguard with the intention of feeding information to the opposition feels like the riskier choice, but crucially it is the devil she knows.
I actually liken this more to Cassandra de Rolo than Essek. Cassandra was manipulated against her brother by the Briarwoods, but this was also spurred by having watched Percy seemingly leave her for dead. There are legitimate reasons why the Briarwoods, as the people who rescued her and then kept her alive for many years, are the easier option in which to place her trust. She knows what she's getting from that vantage point and how to handle it. She doesn't inherently have faith that someone she only knew as a young and helpless child, who ran from the hardships she's faced, would have the strength or willingness to do what she has found necessary for survival.
I think that Liliana's actions are more willful, not least because she was not a child nor in mortal peril when she joined the Vanguard, but she sees herself as having made difficult choices when only faced with difficult options, and I do think they have been difficult. She didn't want to leave her family; she doesn't want to hurt the young Ruidusborn under her care; she is probably genuinely sorry that innocent people were considered a necessary sacrifice for what she sees as the greater good. It is psychologically taxing to feel as though one is always picking between bad options, which is a significant contributing factor for why people buy into a sunk cost for so long. And over time, those hard decisions become easier, because you know what to expect from the outcome. Though Liliana is well aware that she might be killed for a misstep among the Vanguard, she already knows how to act to maintain their favor, but how she might be received on Exandria by those fighting the Vanguard, even with the Hells vouching for her, is anyone's guess.
This is a very real reason why people remain in cults and struggle to push back against this kind of conditioning: because the decision to leave feels more immediately perilous than the decision to stay. (On a certain level making these kinds of choices and actions habitual is a fundamental basis behind a lot of military conditioning.) And if you are acting in the interests of your own survival, but that survival comes at the cost of that of countless others who have not, in fact, made any threat or harm against you to begin with, then is the nature of your survival morally defensible?
This analysis isn't a question of whether Liliana will commit to her role as double agent and turn fully against the Vanguard, or even which one of these is a "better" story; this is about what the story might say if she doesn't. Yes, she might commit to a different path than the one she's on and make an effort to redeem herself, but it is also a perfectly coherent and interesting story if she doesn't.

Bad Boy week Day 5
Theme: underground Prompt: stray cats/dogs
wc: 0.7k c/w: character study, angsty
Tumblr media
Levi wants to be one of them.
Swift. They can cover a distance twice or even thrice the length of their bodies in a single lunge. Even if he was snuck up on, he wants to look like nothing but thin air the next thing his attacker knows. Get away, get ahead.
Agile. Balanced, perfected. They—and he's seen it—can cross clotheslines suspended between roofs, allowing them to traverse the most cramped and most dangerous halls of the Underground gracefully. He would never fall, but in the nightmarish scenario that he did, it wouldn't mean a thing because he'd always land properly on his feet. That's how they all are.
He wants to be a warrior. Lethal, sharp. It's impossible to be infallible, but he'd make everyone think that of him. A hunter, with terrifying efficiency who'd never hesitate. He'd fell would-be threats before they even got the inkling they were being followed. His strength would be unassuming, and he wouldn't play pretend about his friendliness (of which there'd be none). Like them, small, but mighty.
Not for the thrill, though. To eat, he thinks, for comparison's sake...
He once witnessed it, as he was deliberating whether to smash a jar of corn kernels open or find a way to open it, because his hand was too small to grip the tin lid. A cat, crouched low at the top of some wood stairs. The mouse had lingered below. He watched, willing the skinny thing's focus to break.
It didn't. The cat fell upon it from fifteen feet. The next thing he (or the mouse) knew, it was trapped in its jaws. The mouse squeaked, how a person would scream then its neck cracked, and it died instantly.
He didn't look into the cat's vacant, expressionless dark eyes as it ripped into the mouse with razor-like teeth, and ate heartily.
He once saw a cat poke its head throw a jagged gap in a fence no wider than Levi's little finger, and slip the rest of its lanky body through.
He can fit into little cramped spaces, at least. The spaces between walls, and the crawlspaces underneath porches, inside covered wheelbarrows (if he needed to get someplace he shouldn't be seen). He can hide, at least.
But that's nothing. That's like being dead. For as silent as he could be, as much that he had to strain to hear himself take sips of air, sometimes a scream appeared in his chest, the way things disappear into your peripheral vision until you remember they're there do. It was fine in the beginning, but sometimes all he wants to do is breathe in everything terrible—all the air the Underground has—and explode his lungs. He's nervous about the day that might arrive in which screaming would be all he can do.
Hiding in silence... That's what he's doing now. Among spiderwebs and crusty wood-dust in darkness as encompassing as his spot is small: a tiny crevice between the top of a wall and where the slant of the roof begins.
He curls up as small as he can, tucked into a ball, thinking of them again despite the primal need to sleep muddying said thoughts.
Death would be easier, he knows that's an objective fact. So surviving... Why should he? Why does he?
The same conclusion never fails to infuse in him infallible strength.
Because Mama brought him into this world. And what strength that took... To be kind in a place that would rape and take that from you because it sees it inside of you. She was a shimmery ember in a cave of darkness, which to him shown like the light of a thousand suns. He doesn't need to see the sun to know that she was brighter.
Because of her it once, later on occurred to him that fighting and dancing are almost the same thing. He'd never stopped to wonder stupid things like that, but Mama sometimes swayed.
Who is he to be ungrateful to her sacrifices, or to Kenny's vehement efforts for that matter?
He wants to survive.
In an unfair advantage, cats have nine lives (or that's what he's heard). Humans only get one.
He'll become so strong that he might as well, too.

Kinda really don't have patience for people who spread ao3 hate thinking it gives them some moral highground or makes them more "mature" somehow, so much of it is literally just cynicism and needless hostility for people under the garb of some flimsy activist excuse to feel a sense of superiority. And it's never just ao3 either, you check their blog and it's all making fun of people for harmless shit and signs of neurodivergence in the most hateful ways, slurs and all. Schoolyard bullying-core 👌🏼

I'm a real tragedy enjoyer but Luis's death is no longer narratively enjoyable for me, now it just feels like an insult. I'm tired of characters having to die to be "redeemed". It's not their death that is the redemption, it's the fact that they were willing to die in the first place; it's the intent of sacrifice. I much prefer a narrative where Luis survives and is forced to every day atone for his past mistakes. I much prefer when characters don't get the respite of death, when they have to live with their demons, when they have to face their past and maintain their growth. And it's especially maddening when the only reason Luis dies is because he did in the original. They'll change his character so much to give him substance but they won't change his fate? I don't want that.

“Kingdom Hearts being an epic slow burn gay romance would be incredibly impactful to people both personally and as a landmark in queer representation by extremely popular and established characters. It has decades of legitimate buildup and has the potential to be both incredibly validating to queer fans everywhere and even possibly sway the minds of those who love the characters but may not have much contact or knowledge of queerness.”
and
“The Kingdom Hearts series is honestly kind of unique in its unabashed emotional sincerity. How it treats friendships and non-romantic bonds as being both extremely important and powerful, never giving the impression that friendship is lesser to romance, is depressingly still somewhat of a rarity in media. This is very important and validating to many, particularly aromantics but also most everyone who is just Tired of how friendships and romance are often presented in tiers of importance.”
are concepts that can and should co-exist.
#like i get it. there really is nothing quite like kh when it comes to how it treats the bonds between characters#and the latter is just as legitimate!#but i do think that the people who argue (in good faith) that kh shouldnt make anyone canon-#-are kind of missing the forest for the trees#(i specify in good faith bc we all know the bad faith ones are just co-opting the argument to hide their homophobia)#(and oh boy are *most* of them in bad faith. but i wanna take a sec to talk about this bc there are good faith ones out there)#and what i mean by that is that... well first of all making one ship canon doesn't invalidate all the other examples of stunning displays of#-the power of friendship#second of all i would like you to consider the framing of this#if no ship becomes canon and it's purely platonic for all the OC's... how is it different from any other kids show with no couples?#in terms of representing friendship as not being less than romance?#it's still not bad don't get me wrong. what i'm saying is that media DOES exist#there are shows and books and games out there where there are no couples to speak of#maybe not terribly common but they're out there#but a slow burn epic gay romance where platonic connections are legitimately just as important and powerful? i sure af havent seen it#sora being in love with riku and still willing to sacrifice himself (TWICE) to save kairi... is that not exactly what you want?#to show that the platonic connection is not lesser? that its just as important?#i dunno i've been turning this over in my brain all afternoon thinking about it#stop talking to yourself flight

bones please spare some isaac facts...tell me about the vibes and lore and everything you want. also what's his fave blood type to drink if he has one perhaps..(i'm taking notes)
HEHEHE THANK YOU SM i have so much to say about this man. but also he hasn't existed for very long in my brain yet so there's still many things missing from his lore currently. but here is a start for you :^)
isaac is a couple centuries old by now and from a (currently unnamed) bloodline that's a bit different from other bloodlines. all vampires have double fangs, their puncture fangs which are the regular ones they use to draw blood with, and their venomous fangs, which only come out when they want to change someone. for isaac's bloodline, the venomous fangs are a lot smaller which makes them less painful to extend and the process is quicker; but at the same time, even the smallest mistake in dosage could kill a victim rather than change them. this is why his bloodline is very small in comparison to others and changing a human into a vampire is always done in a big ritual rather than on impulse, to make sure they get the right dosage. this is how isaac was turned into a vampire :(
his bloodline is also more likely to have their feral sense (uncontrollable mode in which they hunt for blood until they're no longer feral) activated which is why they have to feed regularly and CANNOT miss any meals unlike other bloodlines who can usually miss a meal or two. their feral sense can sneak up on them without a warning and it will cause them to go feral until either their hunger or their "urge" (something vamps get sometimes when they want to change other humans. it's like a vampire ovulation) is sated. this is why many vampires of isaac's bloodline are pretty rich or important people who have other vampires working for them to provide them with enough blood so they'll never go feral by accident
isaac is VERY different from his bloodline though. he grew up in a modest family somewhere in the east of the united states and after he was turned he hid himself away in an old abandoned chapel for many many years, feeding on wildlife and the occasional unfortunate soul who wandered too far into the woods. he ended up hunted down by heavenly, my other oc for this story, who is a vampire hunter but at that point was still very young and on his first ever vampire hunt without his father; heavenly was unable to kill isaac and let him go, after which isaac moved to jericho :]
jericho is a big city on the west coast of the united states and it's essentially a vampire hub, in the sense that the government knows about the existence of vampires but isn't telling the general public but the general public tends to also know about the existence of vampires but it's also not uncommon to come across people who've never heard of them. but at the same time it's also not a huge shock to find out that vampires exist. and in jericho there's many of them and it's like a safe haven for them. am i making sense here
anyway isaac runs a church in jericho now! it's less used as an actual church and more just a homeless shelter and general shelter and community center and food bank AND blood bank all in one, for humans and vampires alike, and he's a very important member of the community he lives in :^) he really wants to help people and improve lives despite the reputation of his bloodline
it's at the same time pretty dangerous for him to be in such a lively place because if he misses a meal even once he could go on a murderous rampage. but it's a risk he's willing to take, knowing he's making a difference and not wanting people to lose their stability in life because he decides to leave or something like that
i don't have much for the story yet but the idea is that heavenly shows up in jericho give or take 2-3 decades after first meeting isaac and they reunite :^) heavenly ends up helping isaac with the blood shortage crisis and also ends up as his personal blood bag because he's a freak and a weirdo who likes getting his blood sucked by vampires. and also he's gay for isaac. and i get him. me too

Sorry for the suggestive ask 😇 but i just NEED to know about the classic question: who's top bunk, who doesn't care and who prefers bottom bunk? (iykyk)
oh, i see what you're putting down.
elio prefers to be in the top bunk because he likes to feel tall. also, he used to jump off the top bunk as a kid. king of the mountain shit.
jamie is also usually in the top bunk because he can get down way easier than everyone else on account as being tall as shit. percy will reluctantly settle for the bottom bunk on account of not really having a dog in this race, but if given the opportunity would pick the top bunk too. he likes high places.
i like to imagine that the plan was, prior to jamie coming into the picture, that elio and percy shared one room of their apartment and had a bunk bed that looked like these:
Tumblr media
their actual bedrooms that they occupy now were probably used as a game room or a storage bay for percy's tj maxx purchases until he could figure out where to put them.
no, but really. they lived in normal dorm housing until they got the house. elio's probably the only one who's ever had a bunk bed.

While I am glad that they didn’t, as someone who generally still enjoys pre-mouth rig gen 3, I still cannot for the life of me fathom why the god damn hell SSE didn’t split off the generations with the jorvik wild and just bit the bullet on either the mouth-rigs being gen 4 or atleast 3.5
Not even just for the pedantic shit they’d have so much fucking logistics fixed by it it’s actually insanity that the connemara and the... any horse after like the Finnhorse is allowed to be considered “the same generation of model quality”

Playing Bioshock 1 again for the first time in a long while, it made me realise just how much of 7th generation gaming we take for granted.
Among all the piss-filtered dark-age talk of how so many AAA games around this time eventually became homogenously Gears of War/COD-like in order to capitalise on their success, we tend to memory hole how this generation started off with a bang with titles like this, Prey (2006), Kameo: Elements of Power, and Little Big Planet.
It was also the last time we would ever see this many original single player games with AAA backing debut in a generation, until the 2010s where said industry would start going all in on the live-service multiplayer model.
While the indie/mid-budget gaming scene has picked up the torch of continuing to bring us fantastic SP games that have themselves become legends in their own right, there's something I find truly magical about playing a SP game that, not only has a solid premise and design philosophy going on, but also has the kind of high production values that AAA can afford them.
