‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ AN EXCUSE TO YAP . GODSPEED BELOVED CITIZEN. FOR SPACING I MAY HAVE TO DO A MULTI PART BUT I THINK ILL START WITH THE OGS. Honestly I wouldn’t mind an input about which one to clarify about,,,,, also Godspeed because you did this anon off which I could never be brave enough to do (positive) OKAY OKAY SO.
The Primary setting is Diamond Is Unbreakable. Featuring my favorite four gay college aged losers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
JOUJIROU HANABUSA is, quite obviously, yet another illegitimate child of a certain old man. 20 years old and studying to become essentially a professional bug researcher? She was actually made separate from the entire groups theming. She’s kindhearted and struggles to stand up for herself or take things serious, as she feels great remorse for who she was previous to college. She used to be a big hothead boy (‼️TRANSFEM BTW) who was the classic archetype of kid having a rough time at home (or at this case, lack thereof as she was in the foster system at a very small age) and took it out on other people. She struggles with feeling like she’s constantly left out or behind, which emphasizes itself when shit kicks into high gear in the story. (AU pictured briefly here where Joseph finds her at 11 and takes her to be apart of the family)
This kind of reputation proceeds her in the small town, and as such she’s become much more withdrawn and introverted. She left for a period of time as to help her adoptive father on business trips. After which, she came across her little half brother after he accidentally bumped into her while she was frozen looking at a millipede on a streetlight. They didn’t like eachother at first! But brother, once the moms found out it was OVER.
Her stand is The Seven Plagues of Egypt, a very odd place for a stand such as this! But that’s sort of her whole point, she’s sort of an echo of someone she never knew and the issues resulting sort of warping her life and behavior forever unintentionally. (Fun fact: she was 11 when the SDC arc happened!) her stand itself is disturbing and odd, manifesting itself not just out of the material it controls (locusts, fire, blood, etc etc) but also her own internal issues.
The stand itself is crazy, but it’s in the hands of a person who never wants to hurt anyone. Her favorite bugs are of course locusts, having certain earrings and a ponytail holder resembling the insect. It’s range is rather questionable, as Seven Plagues did fuck up— Y’know— Egypt. Or at least a wide range. I don’t have an exact number, as it’s very hard to pin down! She sees through the eyes of the locusts, and can pretty much go anywhere with it even though she can’t use her abilities through the bug outside of a certain radius.
Speaking of, as to how she takes damage— a lot of her stand is multiple organisms in hordes, and she often uses these creatures passively. Whether it be one or 30 all hidden around the room to listen and watch. They appear as small cuts on her body whenever they die, which is HIGHLY annoying for her. (and, newsflash: she DOES get headaches from being rattled around in a jar)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(AU pictured briefly here where Joseph finds her at 11 and takes her to be apart of the family part 2) I’ve tried drawing it only a handful of times once before, but I do struggle to capture it in a way I like. I have far better sketches I know I’ve deleted but can find! But I’d rather not accidentally delete all of this as I’m on mobile.
Her SCARRING is something very important, as it actually doesn’t come from her hurting herself! It’s a close call with Yoshikage Kira, and brother she FELL for that damsel in distress act he put up and he GOT her ass. Luckily he was on the run so she didn’t have to worry about any extra shit, but needless to say her persistent belief in the goodwill of others gets her in trouble. (I am totally certain this won’t happen a second time with a pink haired man who has some weird shit goin on)
Tumblr media
This is the most RECENT but UNFINISHED mapping of her scars, body and shape. As you can tell I made the center of the blast sort of blister into a star mark. She gets more later, but as of right now we’re focused on part 4 Jouji. This obviously fucked her up big time, destroyed any feel in that side of her body and definitely needed several surgeries, medications and a cane. Her eye technically survived but it’s very piss poor vision on her other side.
She functions poorly in serious social situations, often opting to do bits or try to lighten up the mood. Though she can hold her own close range as well as a regular buff ass 6’6 woman can, she doesn’t often resort to that unless it’s protective. She at least knows how to try her best in situations where people need support or feel isolated, as she knows those kinds of feelings well and tries to befriend people through food and gifts. This is actually why all of her friends came not from college, but from the cafe Norman works at!
LASTLY, she warms up to her new dad rather quickly! She’s an adult, and she tries to reassure him he couldn’t have known she or her brother were born. (“Though, did you HAVE to cheat on your wife? I mean, thanks for the life and all…… but jeez, dude— TWICE? at your age? Damnn….”) she can’t help but wonder if somewhere in the back of his mind, he knows what her mom is like. who she is. She was left alone in Morioh at like 5, and doesn’t remember her twin brother. (And never learns of him until far, far, FAR later.) She just wants to know why she was left behind, and the only one to be. (It was the destructiveness of her stand, and for a assumedly standless mother— it was far too much to handle. So she took the other less exhausting son.)
Tumblr media
Though…….. if she were smaller it would NOT be the case.

My School President Episode 9: The edge of glory
Tumblr media
We're moving into the final act via this transition episode, as the table gets set for all the coming of age tropes to crash in along with the Hot Wave final. The main melody is a sweet love song, but the counterpoint is unnerving, and starting to crescendo. Storms are brewing for Tinn and Gun back at home, but at the beach they're just enjoying being boyfriends and vibing with each other, even as Yak crashes the lovey dovey party for a shot at redemption. Meanwhile Sound and Win decide to start a game of gay chicken, and Por decides cunt is on the menu all episode as he parades ALL THE LEWKS EVER. Yes, that absolutely is important enough to be up here in the intro instead of down in the Ad Libs because...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOBODY else in this band is on Por's level, do you hear me? NOBODY.
Verse: Eye of the tiger
Tumblr media
Come on, oh, my star is fading And I see no chance of release And I know I'm dead on the surface But I am screaming underneath And time is on your side, it's on your side now Not pushing you down and all around
Coldplay | Amsterdam (2002)
Yak is a fun and interesting character. He's a person who fucked up and knows it, and it feels like he's stuck there a little until he can somehow atone. He's also a good band musician, and slightly unhinged. Altogether, that makes for some interesting dynamics as he tries to redeem himself via providing whatever help he can to get Chinzhilla to that trophy moment. Which is actually quite a lot; there is method to his madness, and he's not wrong about what the band needs to put them over the top. They do need to be fit, disciplined and in sync with each other, and the song they write and perform does have to stand out. He also knows these kids: they were his juniors, he's observed them, he knows who they are and what they're capable of, even if they don't know it themselves. If he seems a little overinvested, I honestly can't blame him, because wouldn't you feel a bit shit knowing you made things harder for the people coming up behind you? He's trying to do right by the juniors he let down, in his own way.
Chorus: Lovefools
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I came here with a load And it feels so much lighter now I met you And honey, you should know That I could never go on without you
Coldplay | Green Eyes (2002)
Neither Gun nor Tinn being quite ready to take things to the next step made a lot of sense to me. These feelings they have are so big, and it feels really important to do this thing between them right. I think they'd feel like they cheated if they took things forward out of the 'talking' stage with Hot Wave still looming. So they'll call each other boyfriend, because they know how they feel and they aren't hiding it from each other, but they're not gonna do anything about it until Hot Wave is over, and honestly that feels like the right move for the show. Yes the rule seems dumb, but so does the BBQ pork tradition, and yet it holds deep meaning. Them holding back is giving Gun that extra thing to strive for, and it's giving Tinn what feels like time to pull together his courage. Because I honestly think Tinn is uncomfortable with all the lying he's doing to his mom. I think he wants to be open with her about Gun and how he feels, but she seems so against Gun, and that scares Tinn. Gun winning Hot Wave means he can say to his mom 'see, he's not just some slacker'.
Bridge: The taming of the shrews
Tumblr media
Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry You don't know how lovely you are I had to find you, tell you I need you Tell you I set you apart
Coldplay | The Scientist (2002)
Oh honestly who wouldn't fall in love with that? Sound didn't have a chance, Win's just too cute, even when he's being a jackass. Sound struggling to put his feelings for Win into words, especially since they aren't the typical words you'd make into a love song, just tugged at my heartstrings. 'I like fighting with you but maybe be less of an asshole' is definitely not the typical lovey dovey sentiment, but he got there in the end, and Win understood exactly what he was trying to say. I actually really like that Win's feelings are a little complicated, that feels right for an enemies-to-lovers story like this. Is he there yet, no. But does he have enough positive feelings about Sound to give it a try, yes. I like that it isn't happening all at once for him, but he's open to letting Sound shoot his shot.
Ad Libs
Ms. Gim had better have something easily curable, like a baby brother for Gun from a secret boyfriend 🤣. MS. GIM HAD BETTER BE OK! Because Gun already had to deal with losing one parent while he was living his best life.
Ms. Potjanee...sweetie...your son ran off insisting he had to go see a band FULL OF BOYS. Even if you ain't clocking that it's Gun, it's definitely not a girl.
Loved Ms. Gim and Ms. Potjanee meeting, I want them to be friends so bad. I feel like Gim would make Potjanee have some fun, and Potjanee would make Gim take better care of herself.

Inside You - By Master-Oshinshin (8/10)
Tumblr media
There's extra gore in this yaoi, which adds spice. The art also improves over time. Unfortunately, most of this series is behind a Patreon paywall. The gory/NSFW chapters cannot be posted on Line webtoon, so the story will look choppy unless you pay. If you do choose to support this author you won't be disappointed. This psycho murderer doesn't hold back.
Matthew is the biggest problem with this webtoon. He's bland. Blander than sand. He is so boring that I can't focus on him when he's talking. He's a quiet gay guy who lost his mom at a young age. His abusive uncle raised him. He's not open about his gayness, and his first secret boyfriend vanished. They were passionate secret lovers in high school and Matthew still hasn't forgotten about that boy. Tristan was his first love.
Tumblr media
I'm not saying Matthew is a bad guy. He's just too weak. For example...he doesn't do much when his friend starts acting homophobic. Sam was also his friend in high school. She had a crush on him and when she figures out that he's still pining for Tristan she lashes out. She calls him disgusting and she harasses him at work.
Tumblr media
Sam goes way, way too far. She's homophobic AND too immature to handle rejection, even though she's a fully grown adult. All of the adults in this story are fairly successful with good careers including Sam. I'm almost sure that Tristan is going to kill Sam. That makes sense but Matthew should have stood up for himself a little bit. He doesn't even glare at Sam. It's like he expected her to turn against him as soon as his sexuality came to light.
Tumblr media
Tristan is a sexy rich murderer with a shitty dad. He likes to cut parts of people off before they die, so he can watch them struggle to survive. He likes Matthew because the other man didn't forget about him. His father pulled him out of school, and everybody else stopped giving a shit about him. Matthew kept trying to reach out. He was a great boyfriend. Tristan wants him back.
Tumblr media
They meet at their school reunion and they have sex immediately. Matthew is in the closet. He's been mostly celebate for eight years. Tristan instantly starts flirting and making promises. He doesn't act too strange. He turns on the charm. Matthew doesn't suspect anything.
Tumblr media
Matthew starts having weird dreams about Tristan...and dreams about being watched. His instincts are telling him something is wrong. He doesn't throw himself at Tristan. He doesn't trust him because he already left without an explanation once.
Tumblr media
Another guy at the high school reunion tries to save Matthew. He's not homophobic. He cares about Matthew. He quickly realizes that Tristan and Matthew have hooked up. He tells Matthew to stay far away from Tristan, and he says he'll explain everything in detail on Friday after work. Tristan catches him and we see how the killer operates.
Tumblr media
Tristan has money, so he has a kill room. It looks really isolated and it's impossible to escape from. Tristan cuts off things like arms and legs when his victim is drugged. He plays with Raphael for a long time, because Raphael tried to get in his way. He wants to be with Matthew, and he knows Raphael has a crush on his one true love.
Tumblr media
Tristan wants Matthew to love him and understand him. He expects Matthew to learn how to kill and love his possessiveness. He brings in boys for them to murder together, and he wants to keep Matthew locked up. All so they can have fun killing young boys together. He wants a never-ending psychotic honeymoon.
Matthew didn't see the signs in time.
He gets kidnapped after Raphael's body is delivered to his apartment.
I'm not sure if he'll survive. Being Tristans favorite seems more dangerous than being his prey. He will not stop until Matthew is as unhinged as he is.

💛Smoshblr December Asks Day 23💙
What are your top 3 favourite books (/comics/manga/poems/etc...) and/or top 3 you would recommend to others?
I have never been a big fiction reader. I read a book here and there but I don't think I have favorites. I read a bunch of nonfiction about queer life in the Weimar Republic. So the titles will be all in German. This topic is my special interest...
1. Berlins Drittes Geschlecht - Magnus Hirschfeld
This may sound like it is about trans people but it is mostly about gay men. 3rd Gender was kinda a blanket term for anything queer. An overview in gay scene of Berlin in the 20s/30s. Written to get non-queers on their side and fight for the decriminalization of homosexuality. Literally written to pull at your heat strings and humanize as much as possible.
So it hits extra hard when you are queer.
2. Magnus Hirschefeld Testament Heft 2 (1 is lost)
He is the historical figure I think most about and this is him writing about the last stretch of his life. The nazi takeover happens in the middle of it and you follow him through that.
Magnus Hirschefeld had a clinic in Berlin in the Weimar Republic times. He did the first trans affirmative surgeries there. As well as help out anyone queer. Be it legal, medical or psychological.
It was the first traget of the nazi book burnings. I would say the event that set the stone rolling on a big scale.
Gay Jewish doctor does trans affirming surgeries and writes a lot about sexuality. Basically everything the nazis thought of as their enemy in one person and institution
When the burning happend Hirschefeld wasn't in Germany. He did a world tour of sorts. Speaking and giving lectures around the world.
He didn't return to Germany and died in exile.
3. Das 3 Geschlecht. Die Transvestiten
This is actually a Magazin, but their weren't a lot of issues before they had to shut it down. Ran from 1930 to 1932. Super interesting especially because of the infighting you could see in it. There were some rifts in the trans communities especially between trans women who were attracted to women and trans women who were attracted to men. Sadly there was a sizeable portion of trans women attracted to women who wanted to distance themselves from male attracted trans women. As a ploy to paint themselves as the respectful version. The ones that had the "normal sexuality". Trans women who were attracted to men had apparently more community and connection to gay men at the time. There was also a lot of talk about respectability politics, especially when it came to how to dress. Or how to act. One article shames other trans women for not acting womanly enough by not doing enough housework and being a proper German house wife or dressing to "slutty."
My description paints this as very ugly so far but there are also so many sweet and heartwarming moments in there. As well as the sad. Very time there as an article about struggles and joys of a trans guy I felt like crying. My fave one is a about the relationship between a trans man and a trans women and how their relationship looks like.
Oh and so many pictures. So many pictures of trans people from 1930. It so ahh.
I like it so much because it shows the ugly and the beautiful. The sad and the happy. A view into a the blossoming trans community in the Weimar Republic right before the nazis took over.
And we know what happend then...

Watching Nimona: Spoilers (+Weird Thing I do Alone or With Family)
Sometimes when a gay scene comes on during like a movie (note I’m Bi Saying this) I actively try to emulate a homophobic recoil despite the fact most of my family knows I’m Bi already. Sometimes When I’m alone I simulate/play act my take on a theortical bigotted reaction too just to see how that’d go down..............Its a very weird brain thing Which I’m not sure is conditioning or just a strange cope trying to process this bizarre world covered in nonsensical bigotry.....Maybe its both......I just started watching Nimona btw.
Note: Netflix Times
8:13 GOT, OH NAH WHATS IN THE SWORD?!?!?!?!?
WHAT THE HELLLLLL!!!!!!!!!~~~~ Ain’t NO WAYYYY~~y~~y~y~y!
10:39 That....I hate How the Pupils Don’t Move so Much
11:43 Yaassss We Love Our Terrorist Queens!!!!!!
12:55 Thats a good ass cut away gag.
14:09 The Profiling is actually extraordinary. Also I hate when stuff like this happens. Unless shes the villain or some shit it ain’t make no sense to not investigate that at all.
16:20 Reminds me of that time shrek and donkey beat the shit outta all them knights in the ring.
18:30 I like this track. If the rest of this movie is going to be like rock in the ost that’d be something I might have to go back to.
22:17.....Thats.....So On the Nose.......
25:18
Tumblr media Tumblr media
???????????????????????????????
26:03 Nah She The Main Villain Bro. I ain’t Like the Way These Lines Being Delievered Rn.
29:40  George Michael? also that sax segment in the song is the magic of steve gregory apparently. No Idea who that was before googling, but theres a fun little fact for you via my curiousity.
33:20 WOW THAT IS SO ON THE NOSE!...........See I normally don’t care and being honest right now don’t even really care all that much as I’m still largely enjoying the movie overall. It just feels like.........There is a more provoking way I feel in which this theming can be carried out that’d feel less like being bashed in the head repeatedly by someone yelling “THEME! THEME!”. Like.......It takes me out of it somewhat, because I know there has to be a more graceful way to deliver the same point.
34:18
Nimona “leading me to a Wishing well”
Ballister “ A Wishing Well?! How did You Know it Was Just a Regular Well?”
Nimona “do you want to tell my story for me?”
That transaction I like. I do appreciate the lining and framing of ignorance here.....Actually Maybe this is the right amount of non subtly and I just need to give it time. I get that the story is trying to set up the narrative that even within the realm of outcast there is ignorance and a lack of understanding of one another its just......It feels forced somewhat. Like Ballister needs to be ignorant over very dumb things so the story can draw out its theme and while it in itself speaks to reality it just....Bothers me how much the writing is really trying to gun it without like....any extra sauce to it. Feels too easy a Road.
35:03
“When them Vamps Outside lil Bitch You Better Be Ready.”
“When them Guns Outside lil Bitch You Better Be Ready.”
37:39
Tumblr media
41:28 “who would protect Todd!??!” I love that line reading.
42:13 I want to say I knew it like I’m smart, but that was so obvious. also DAMN this nigga Down Bad as Hell.
43:12 Nigga Got the Dick All in his Mouth “Shaboing Boing” type beat......Also tell me if I’m out of bounds, but it feels weird the lack of dichotomy there is with race. It feels like its aligning towards like....the lgbt and racial things mixing in a blind way I don’t like seeing in real life as a thought process other people have, because it doesn’t hold any sort of intersectionality in regards to the split in these concepts. Like trans people equating their struggle and identity as exact equivalents to black struggles and black identity. It feels.....eh put simply....but idk what I am suppose to expect. Theres the
1. discomfort of like having to address that as white writers.
2. A slightly higher degree of space management trying to wedge that between everything else thematically.
3. Seemingly Utopian-esque Environment in which such issues can be thrown into the hole of nonexistent/unexplored world building and ambiguousness.
.....Part of me wants to call it a tall order and off target, but another part of me just wants to say like “Get Better at Writing” kinda......But I’m not a writer and I don’t know if the white to minority ratio in that writing room would make any sort of execution of such Good or valuable to any degree So I’ll just shut up on it for now as I am clearly talking out of my boundaries a little without enough knowledge to make a truly proper deduction...........
44:47 This is a Really Good Scene/Moment no Funny Shit.
49:38...You know....I just don’t like how obvious the framing is; taking in what i’ve watched so far. Its like less a matter of it being a bad thing inherently as much as it is an annoying thing to just kinda deal with throughout the film for me.
Like....In the scene at 44:47 it felt more to the point with observable layers of depth just paying attention throughout the movie you can pick up on along the way all aligning to the topic/issue of “the model Minority”. Its a more neatly put together trodden piece of text/commentary. With Nimona She has good set up just within the world around her, but it feels so....unserious when they’re trying to push the trans allegory, because it feels so just....summoned for the theme rather than comfortably integrated within more of the dialogue or actual events. The same with like......The confusion Ambrosius has when he sees ballister with some random girl (Nimona). “You’re Evil AND BI!?!??!?!” It just.....Doesn’t Feel smooth in a way that is continuously noticeable throughout the movie in certain areas...at least for me.....
Though of course there are like Cool Moments like 44:47 and 34:18
Theres just what I feel to be an inconsistency in the quality of the deliverance of certain points per-say. Like “Is that it” is a common sentiment, but I might just be greedy with what I want from this 1 and a half hour animated film so Once again I’ll shut up on it, because I’m not sure if I’m being just reasonably opinionated and critical or Picky and ignorant. Its blurred to a point I need it to just sit a little so my actual problems can become a tad more clear.........Plus I haven’t even finished the movie lol.
52:53
Tumblr media
“We’re Going to Kill The Director of the Institution Ballister.”
53:44
oh nah, Here She Go Going into Her evil Back Story and Shit.
55:34 THEY GOT HER ASS HAHAHAHAHAHA
Tumblr media
58:35 This going too well.....Also Conservative Director Apologist have to be going off in this universe if that video got that wide spread. Gnome Rogan and Mage Milo of yianiaus have to be Going Off in the mythical underworld of twattorium.
1:00:40 DRAKEN!?!?!?!?!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1:02:50 ??????????????????????????????
1:04:56 ........I’m actually annoyed. Just TALK nigga damn......I hate movies making things more aggro than they need to be to progress the story.
“You’re a Ni-”
That woulda been a very different movie.
1:05:25  “Your Doors Broken”
Tumblr media
1:09:05 What the fuck???? Yo??? These Villagers aren’t shit (Takes a minute) ah I get it now.
1:10:02 YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! HA, She Really Said “Die Monster!” She a Whole Belmont fr.
1:19:20 ................She a Whole Shooter.
End
wow..........They almost had me. I woulda been actually upset as fuck if thats how they ended it..........7/10. Pretty Good Movie. All the iks I have are like....Minor mostly and overall I had a fun time. Good Watch.

As a non-Klaine fan I’m just curious, why do you think they work well together?
I think it depends on the season you're asking about - it feels like klaine never really have a set dynamic, and charting that course is part of what makes them interesting to me.
In season 2, realistically speaking the plot was "The only other gay kid they know that's not kinda a jerk," and it was a cute first love dynamic, but half the drama in S2 was the fact they didn't really know one another at all. It's not, at that point, the bedrock of any long-lasting relationship.
So for me, it's interesting to see how they shift? Like, honestly to begin with, they seem to like the idea of the other more than the reality. Which, it happens - you've got Blaine trying to be more mature and wise than he actually is, Kurt clearly buying it, etc. Then Blaine's uncertainties rear their head in a way no one's ready for, and they have a lot of adjustments to make. And then, four/five years later, they're married.
So that development, honestly, is a compelling one to me.
I've rambled about this before - when it comes to Glee, I feel like most of the early-season ships were never viewed by the writers as epic love stories for the ages, but rather as temporary relationships that would likely end with graduation. From that perspective, there are kind of two iterations of Klaine to talk about. Pre S4's break-up, and post.
Before, they were a mess. Neither of them knew how a relationship really worked, both of them struggled to act sensibly, both of them could be dumbasses at points, and honestly it's generally endearing - they're navigating unfamiliar waters, with the extra dose of queerness thrown in meaning they're much more on their own. I think it's a good journey for both of them individually, though Klaine was more a vehicle for the two of them than something with its own life.
(In-show anyway. Hard to deny the real life impact)
Then we have the break-up, and ooh I really want to ramble that episode at some point. The short version is, for Klaine, Blaine switched schools for Kurt, Kurt graduated, and he's left alone without most of his old friends. he's isolated, Kurt's distracted and struggling to relate while dealing with adult life drama, Blaine messes up. (Which, I am so curious to figure out the fandom view of that. I have one friend who mentioned she thought it was OoC because she viewed Blaine as someone who needed an emotional connection, while to me he'd always seemed more sexual, so idk. I think Glee definitely runs into fanon taking on a life of its own which makes untangling everything trickier)
If we fast forward to when Klaine end up together again, it makes for an interesting contrast. By that point, Kurt is much more sure of who he is, and presumably Blaine is as well, if to a lesser degree. They always had a vague 'first crush' thing, but for me it is this point where Klaine start being a relationship that functions well as, like, a relationship as opposed to just mutual character growth. They chafe, a ghost of their old 'Sometimes they, Blaine especially, focus on an idea and misses the reality' (which is suchhh a throughline to so many people on Glee) but they're much better at working through it.
Even then, it's not perfect, but even what we see of the break-up seems to be handled much better by them compared to S4.
And then there's the terrifying Sue robot. Ah, Glee.
All that to say - for me, Kurt and Blaine individually are good characters. Kurt, the quieter gay kid growing in confidence over years, and Blaine the optimist and daydreamer who sometimes spirals out when things inevitably don't go to plan. Kurt makes for an interesting counterpoint - to begin with, he's the one who almost looks up to Blaine, only to find out that most of Blaine's confidence is an act. It's a relationship where they both draw one another into unexpected territory, good and bad, and have to work out how to navigate it. If nothing else, Klaine is something that pushes both of them forwards.
I don't necessarily view it as the be-all and end-all of ships, I don't think it's the most compelling dynamic in the show, nor necessarily the sweetest - though they do have cute moments - but it's a relationship that helps draw out two characters, and gets rooted in surprisingly grounded drama of two people in a relationships learning to, well, share space. Especially in late S5, that serves to play off of Blaine's tendency to romanticise, and then Kurt's inherent defensiveness, so they end up as a ship that definitely have things to overcome. But then, that is part of what can make a dynamic interesting.
No idea if I put my view well but hey, you ask this blog a question and you get a ramble I guess.

That Deadline article is so telling. Struggling to think of other movie flops who've had articles written like that about them. Made me think of that British tabloid also going on about how Harry is destined to win awards at the Brits and Grammys too. His people are desperate to try and keep the hype about him going, despite his tour selling well and his song As It Was doing well. They still act like he needs more, because they probably know despite all of the success, it's all hollow and payola.
Yes. I have no idea why the fans and non fans for so long have tried to pretend that Harry isn't actually interested in movies and only filmed them because of the pandemic. That piece is from his team and they show that he and his team are desperate for him to achieve movie stardom. It also shows how deeply well connected his people are that they're capable of Deadline basically giving them an entire puff piece acting as though his acting ambitions are sailing through the heavens right now.
Claiming Harry's having an amazing fall season? The man who has been turned into an entire joke on social media? Millions and millions of views making fun of his singing and acting and clothes and queerbaiting and dumbass comments, then the nanny exposing that he had an affair with two women on set and broke up two women's relationships. Article after article stating Harry needs an entire citizen's arrest on his acting career. His lead co-actress refusing to even acknowledge he exists in public. He released a weird video for a song trying to give his album extra hype and extra sell out singles and the video only has 13 million views after a few weeks release. Harry used to get 100s of millions per video, now he can barely get over 10 million. What an amazing fall he's had indeed.
It's like I said as well, the Elvis thing has been pushed by his team hard. His entire album roll out came with all the Elvis talk. They wanted that connection inside our heads, and still want it now. They think a failed flop audition proves his talents. It shows for him and his team, that his acting ambitions have taken a priority. To sell the album they wanted more to sell him as a credible movie star.
And this section was telling: "But beyond a mere acting feat, My Policeman meant an even greater deal to Styles as it’s a film that spoke directly to his LGBTQ fanbase. For Styles “being able to connect with (them on) a story that would genuinely mean something and connect and help people understand what it could be like if you start rolling back laws,” emphasizes Grandage." Not that it connected with Harry on a personal level, not that it spoke to him. It's basically weirdly admitting to him queerbaiting, but making out like that's a gift to his fans. It's verys specific that this isn't about a connection to Harry's own life, it's about the fans.
Also, there's no way I believe Harry cared or thought about rolling back laws or anything like that, remember his interview where he said it was hard to imagine a time where it was all illegal etc? Like he just couldn't fathom gay people being closeted and all the rest? Despite growing up in the UK where there were still laws and things like Section 28. That's not someone who sounds cautious it could get rolled back, it sounds like someone who thinks we're all living through a Nirvana of LGBT rights.
But we can see he and his team are very keen to try and somehow drum up some interest and credibility in his future acting endeavours. I have no doubts he is still auditioning. I expect a brief cameo in January on some MCU project, but I expect too that that cameo will be filmed and then edited down, because I think every project will now be wary about Harry turning their project into a viral joke.

BOM London (Matinee) 20.8.22
I may have audio. DM if interested
Ben Tyler was Price, David McMullan was McKinley (this is his last two scheduled shows before he leaves), Tom Xander was Cunningham, Leanne Robinson was Nabulungi, and Myles Hart was the Doctor.
I'm going to focus on Ben and David (cos they were who I was focused on today), with a mention of Myles.
Nice McPriceley-ness, not OTT but definitely there.
Also, David is much much shorter than Ben. Like really really short compared to him.
Ben Tyler as Price
This is the 2nd time I've seen Ben as Price, and I adored him today. He was really funny and made Kevin quite immature and petulant - which was really ammusing to see. He had Kevin stamp his feet whenever he didn't get what he wanted after going to Uganda and throw his hands up in exasperation at the same time. It was a mixture of Kevin being immature, spoilt, niave and generally frustrated that he didn't think he would do something incredible.
In Hasa Diga whe Mafala says "I will give you my aids", Ben grabbed his own backside protectively.
In TIO he stood at the front of the stage gesturing to his waistcoat when he caught McKinley's eye and McKinley just ignored him. Then when he sat down Arnold took it off for him and he looked irritated and kept mouthing "give it back", until he put out his hand and was tapping it until Arnold gave it to him (and then he just his it behind the cushion anyway!).
The almost kiss - he stood there for a moment after the almost kiss just kinda looking at McKinley, before going to leave.
The height difference between Ben and David made it quite awkward - David is MUCH shorter than Ben.
He pushed/three McKinley out of the way when he stormed out the mission hut. That got a laugh from the audience.
He practically skipped towards McKinley in SMHD - which was kinda sweet in a weird way. I also saw him drink from one of the coffee cups (I've not sat in auditorium where I could see that before, so I don't know if it's normal), but afterwards he went wide-eyed and staggered a bit like he had a caffeine high. Ive not seen Dom do that before and Ben didn't the last time I saw him in the role. He also tapped his heels together like Dorothy and mouthed 'theres no place like home' right at the start, which made people laugh
He acted really drunk at the Kafe - more drunk then I've ever seen Dom act. He also went "ow!" and struggled to sit down again at after he shouted at Cunningham, which had Arnold pause and pull a 'what's that about' face.
When he said "break the rules", he looked over at McKinley and smiled, and the woman next to me actually went "awwww".
His facial expressions were amazing and the audience loved him - he really played the role more comically (his expressions were extra extra) then the last time I saw him perform in the role.
David McMullan as McKinley
Camp. Much more camp than I've seen Stevie be. It was brilliant.
TIO -when he said "being gay is bad" he looked at Price, and "lying is worse" he looked at Cunningham. He also linked arms with Price and stroked his arm just before "keeping it down like a dimmer switch".
The almost kiss - when he turned away afterwards he actually mouthed to Poptarts 'its okay' and then waved his hands dismissively in the direction of him and another Elder before he went and practically threw himself Infront of the mission hut door. Price actually pushed/threw him out the way and he stumbled.
SMHD - he gyrated at Kevin waggled his tongue at him. He was so enthusiastic giving Hitler head that his sparkly top hat fell off.
After SMHD, he got really close when he asked "was I in it?" and when one of the elders turned to look (and the others looked away uncomfortably) he mouthed 'what?'.
I am Africa - he looked disgusted when "a tribal woman who doesn't wear a bra" was sang.
JSAM - he actually kept looking at Cunningham and shaking his head. And he rolled his eyes at him periodically giving him evils.
He was brilliant and tbh he stole the show. Most the audience were sitting at curtain call until he came on, and as soon as he did the auditorium erupted.
Myles Hart
Myles was funny. I don't have alot to say other than he was very funny.
He snogged Hitler in SMHD. I dunno why I thought that was great, but I did.
Overall
I'm really glad I got to see David as McKinley, he was really good.
Now I just need to see Rolley as McKinley and Philip as Cunningham.

That article is idiotic but it's also stupid to claim that Nazis have only targeted poc. Ask a Pole about their opinion on nazism lol
https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/victims-of-the-nazi-era-nazi-racial-ideology
(You might need to copy-paste the link if you wanna read the full thing)
"But, Hitler warned, the German “Aryan” race was threatened by dissolution from within and without. The internal threat lurked in intermarriages between “Aryan” Germans and members of inherently inferior races: Jews, Roma, Africans, and Slavs. The offspring of these marriages were said to dilute the superior characteristics reflected in German blood, thus weakening the race in its struggle against other races for survival."
"The interwar German state further weakened the German “Aryan” race by tolerating procreation among people whom the Nazis considered genetically degenerate and a harmful influence on the hygiene of the race as a whole: people with physical and mental disabilities, habitual or career criminals, and persons who compulsively engaged in socially “deviant behavior” as the Nazis perceived it, including homeless people, allegedly promiscuous women, people unable to hold a job, or alcoholics, among others."
"If Germany did not act decisively against the Jews both at home and abroad, Hitler claimed, hordes of subhuman, uncivilized Slavs and Asiatics that the Jews could mobilize would sweep away the “Aryan” German race."
Essentially, if you were a Slav you would be a target. You'd also be a target if you were disabled, gay, jobless, homeless, and a myriad of other things, regardless of 'race.' I put race in quotes bc Hitler used race, ethnicity, and nationality interchangeably. That's why he put the Nordic people on a pedestal while hating Slavs although both groups are white. I also wonder how you respond to people who have experience with communism when they smear it
Who ever said the Nazi only targeted poc? Europe was still mostly white in the mid 20th centuries so most nazi victims (beside jews) were white. Could you guys stop bringing up elementary school level information and act like it was a groundbreaking knowledge? 😭 Yeah : beside jews, gay, disabled, homeless/society dropouts, and even communists were targetted by Nazis. Yeah slavics were considered below the Germanic Aryan. We been knew. Doesn't rebuke the fact that extra European poc were still considered subhumans for just existing, waaay below slavic people. And I think Slavic people themselves know it by the fact they have no issue having nazi heroes (hi Ukraine!) and that eastern Europe is a nest of Nazi wannabe (there's no wonder many western European nationalists/nazi migrate out there). You don't see that nazi friendly dynamic in very nationalist non White countries, interesting isn't it? Meanwhile Communism had an outstanding capability to penetrate many countries accrosss the globe. Why? Because unlike nazism, it's not race based.
I respond to people with bad experience to communist to get over it lmao Communism is dead for a couple years and sometimes those twats were born way aftee it collapsed. This shit screams persecution Olympics. Those people can't claim struggle over oppression that are still well and alive (homophobia, racism, etc.) so they'll bring the story of their great grand father who died bc of Communism. Sad. But at some point you guys need to understand that you can't bear the trauma of your ancestors. I'm from Congo and who know, maybe some of my ancestors got their hand chopped because of that demon King Leopold II just bc they didn't pick enough rubber. But if I do, I'm actually a silly woke activist trying to shame to innocent whites who for the most part never owned slaves. So why can't you guys keep that same energy for communism and stop complaining about it when the people who were responsible of those crimes were only a handful of people.
The Bible is sooo right to tell us to not look back into genealogy bc many of us would go crazy at how much our ancestors suffered at the hands of psychopaths. And yet here we are alive. And that's all that matters.

revisiting 粉黛/Fendai
I'm surprised that my immediate reaction after finishing 内娱第一花瓶/Top Flower Vase of the Mainland Entertainment Industry is going back to re-read 粉黛/Concealed and Blended: Fendai like two times in a row. Both stories are about an actor struggling with performance meeting a talented artist who helps him make a breakthrough, though Fendai is shorter and arguably fluffier ... arguably.
Tumblr media
(Audiodrama cover art, on Mao'er)
Fendai has a premise rife in misunderstandings: self-proclaimed "straight" guy Li Boxi uses cross-dressing as a personal brand to stand out in the professional makeup industry, and lets people assume he is queer to fit in. He meets actually-gay retired E-Sports player Cheng Ping, who stays closeted so he can work as a celebrity actor. Before the secrets come out, they totally misinterpret each other's intentions. Meanwhile, Li Boxi is so done with the superficiality of his industry and Cheng Ping has a hair-trigger temper, which make for some hilarious antics and internal monologue.
Despite the text describing him to be 'deep in the closet (深柜)' , Cheng Ping seems fairly secure with his homosexuality. He isn't ashamed of developing crushes on guys and even takes steps to pursue relationships with them. Cheng Ping is set up like a straight-passing "manly" type, but he is at ease with Li Boxi's flamboyant cross-dressing, and is even low-key jealous of his audacity and self-expression.
The main couple starts their relationship with imperfect intentions and understandings of each other, but they try their best for each other and quickly lean into the best parts of their relationship.
Fendai treats both acting and visual arts as serious crafts that require hard work as well as inspiration. Cheng Ping lacks the former and Li Boxi the latter, and over the course of the story they help each other make important progress in their professional lives.
[Spoilers ahead]
The thing that made me feel "meh" about the novel the first time is the cynicism of the resolution to the climax of the novel. Li Boxi and Cheng Ping's relationship is maliciously outed, and Li Boxi saves Cheng Ping's reputation by claiming to be an gay admirer harassing an unwilling straight man. It works, but it's also one lie to reinforce another lie to keep a gay man in the closet. The crisis is averted but not truly solved.
The novel proper ends with the two of them getting back together three years after separating for the aforementioned PR crisis. They choose to move forward together, but it's unclear where they -- and their careers -- will go from there. But I guess part of the message is that this is a risk they are willing to take to have each other.
(The Extras shows that Cheng Ping continues working as a respected actor, and they do not publicly acknowledge their relationship despite being out among family and friends.)
Li Boxi's affections for Cheng Ping has always been laced with guilt and responsibility. He feels guilty for having misled Cheng Ping about his sexuality and persona, for loving for Cheng Ping because he is his muse, and even for swooping in when Cheng Ping is vulnerable after a history of rejection. He is the protagonist and POV character, and it's easy to get lost in his inner struggles and grand gestures.
I noticed more details about Cheng Ping between the lines during my re-reads. He knows he is a muse, and is insecure about Li Boxi's attraction beyond that. He is drowned by guilt and heartbreak when Li Boxi self-destructs his career to save him. He feels unworthy next to Li Boxi's immense sacrifice, and insignificant next to the new muses and inspirations Li Boxi has found from his years traveling. He is the one who falls faster and harder, even though he has always had much less power in this relationship and seems to have done much less for it.
The narrative is full of paradoxes, starting from its premise. In the end, Li Boxi is the force driving the key changes in their relationship, but it's Cheng Ping who holds onto it like a lifeline. Cheng Ping gets through those three years telling himself that their relationship hasn't ended, while Li Boxi isn't even sure about resuming anything until he learns of this.
But what I find so compelling about this novel and this relationship is exactly this: that they know their positions are unequal, and their prospects are imperfect, and they are not yet loved like they hope and deserve to be loved, but they go on anyways with an unspoken belief that this can become something good. Love isn't the reward for perfectly deserving people or sufficiently difficult journey. Life, love, career, and people are all works in progress that can change for the better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
P. S. There is a completed comic/manhua adaptation based on the series. (See images above.)
P. P. S. There is also a completed audiodrama adaptation, featuring :
Ma Zhengyang (donghua VA for Hua Cheng) as Li Boxi, and
Lu Zhixing (audiodrama and live action VA for Wei Wuxian) as Cheng Ping

The thing about Rimmer…
He really isn’t a bad person, sure he does act like a dickhead at times but to me it seems more like a coping mechanism than who he truly is. This is a man that’s been treated like garbage by anyone and everyone that’s crossed his path, including his own parents (Well his Mother and Stepfather …we don’t know if Dungo was even aware that Rimmer was his son) who brought him into existence.
It’s clear Rimmer never had support and help growing up and has always had to fend for himself which would result in high walls he’s built to protect himself and not let anyone in. He wants to let people in, he wants to be cared for and loved but he doesn’t know how to seen as everyone he has ever let in betrayed his trust in the end. It doesn’t help that a lot of his thought processes are twisted and messed up given that a lot of the things he follows come from his Stepfather, who only seemed interested in living out his own dreams through the boys. Rimmer never had anyone growing up to tell him that his view on women isn’t great or that being gay isn’t a crime. He never had anyone to call him out and put him in his place (until Lister and eventually Kryten came along).
The man has carried around years of burdens and blame that for the most part aren’t at his fault. Rimmer has always been the one that’s in the wrong, that’s been made to not feel good enough. He’s carried the blame and burden of the radiation leak for over 3 million years when he should have never been ordered to fix the drive plate in the first place. Hollister was quick to blame Rimmer when he shouldn’t have given the order in the first place knowing full well it was out of Rimmer’s area.
I’m very much in agreement that Rimmer could well be autistic, given that he shows a lot of the same aspects that I do. He often takes things literally like in Gunmen of the Apocalypse when Bear Strangler McGee says ‘That pays for the hat but what about in the insult?’ Rimmer takes it literally and starts insulting him until Lister steps in. I’ve always said the filter between his brain and his mouth is faulty. He doesn’t read social cues very well as seen in the beginning of Meltdown when he’s telling his risk story and is completely unaware of Lister and Cats disinterest …even after Lister telling him so. He has hyperfixations on war, telegraph poles and vintage wires, he struggles socially and with empathy. It was also mentioned in TPL when Rimmer is shifting through light modes and mentions organizing his books on OCD that he has the condition which often goes hand in hand with Autism.
Rimmer finds it easier to keep himself to himself, keep his walls high and push everyone away because it’s easier to deal with than the hurt and pain of used and betrayed. I think the reason I’m so attached to him is because I see so much of myself in him. I’ve been through similar to what Rimmer has and being constantly made to feel useless and being treated badly all the time will make you bitter and cynical and it will warp how you view everyone around you. Having OCD and autism myself I completely and totally understand Rimmer’s way of thinking and how he behaves.
Rimmer isn’t a bad person, he’s complicated and messed up but deep down there’s just a man that wants to love and be loved, he can do anything but he just needs a little extra help and support. I for one would happily listen to his risk stories, let him talk me through his telegraph pole photos or vintage wires, I’d support him in everything he does and I would always remind him that he is loved 😊
Tumblr media
And you know what I love about Rimmer the most …despite everything he’s been through he has never once given up!

give us the "artemy is gay" thesis im begging
it's very simple actually (cracks knuckles) my first piece of data is my own lived experience :3
in P2 theatre scene he speaks "I'm not sure I know how to love." this was my personal stance on my own self for years before i realized i was gay. i saw Love and Love For Men as one single whole just like i had been taught and shown, and as such, no Love For Men meant no Love at all. it didn't click that i could just... look the other way. and that's where Love was. that's what Artemy is going through for me, he's just taking longer than I did. guy who's not Getting that if he doesn't like women it doesn't mean love is off the table for him 💕 he's just like me but inverse we're each other's shadow twin.
second piece of data is him having no biological descendants and instead adopting, as well as being a Father Figure (general) to others while not having a woman by his side
not having biological children has been, and still is, the experience of many, many gay people over the centuries. not all! but more often than not, adoption had been the one way gay couple could have children of their own. the "childless aunt and her female roommate coming over for christmas" is a joke because a lot of gay people find themselves having no kids. a number do just make peace with the "bloodline ends with me". you know how in some animal species with common homosexual pairings, these couples that cannot reproduce become caregivers to orphaned or rejected offspring? that's what i see for him. that's what he got going on
third piece of data is. Dad.
an experience that bind gay children to their parents is You're Going To Act In Ways That Will Disappoint Your Parents. Artemy's entire arc in P2 is trying to find a way, a balance, an equilibrium between what he wants/will have his life be and what his father, and the entire Kin, expects of him. He lives with the knowledge that, to live fully and truthfully, he may need to go against his father's words, his father's plans. To disappoint. that's a Quintessential Homosexual Experience. He struggles between keeping traditions, insisted upon by his peers, and breaking free of them. any of these two choices may hurt him, or hurt people around him. homosexual man.
fourth and extra piece of data is
his father's "I respect your choice-any choice" + the whole theme of "any choice is right as long as it is willed" :3 what if he struggled with this one thing that he did not choose and yet sticks to his skin
last piece of data is I'm a homosexual and i'm balling
edit to add:
also for fun i love to think mother boddho made him that way (homosexual. unable to be remotely attracted to women.) because she needed him as he is in the same way i think the earth made me a lesbian for the same exact reasons 💕🫂
edit to add 2: i need hours to find it again but. extra piece of data: whatever the fuck this is
Tumblr media
thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about it🫂

Hello! Why do you like the Hummelberry friendship so much?
ngl , i was a bit worried what had prompted this question since i've not encountered much of a positive outlook towards hummelberry in this fandom except for a very few , but then i remembered about the hummelberry post i had queue'd and this question makes much more sense now
now to the question , why do i like hummelberry . a simple answer would be that they were supportive friends who became a constant in each other's lives whether by choice or circumstance .
most people who dislike hummelberry , either hate them due to their dislike towards Rachel or due to the fact that kurtcedes was replaced by this friendship .As you know , i really do like Rachel and find her extra dramatic behaviour actually endearing and relatable in the way that makes a human act when they put too much of their confidence in their talent and don’t believe their whole personality could be a factor anyone would like them . i used to be part of the second group since kurtcedes was , and still am , my favourite friendship/characters . But i’ve learned to love and appreciate both the friendships and have understood the fact that both the friendships have contributed to Kurt becoming the complex human he is by the end of the show.
Now . i’m not going to sit here and say that hummelberry was the best friendship or were perfect for each other . each of them had their own faults , and there were times i wanted to knock some sense into them . like s3-4 acted as if kurt was Rachel’s gay best friend which pushed him a lot to the sidelines and made his every storyline revolve around her . and if you look at s1 , there are many instances where kurt wasn’t the most understanding of rachel mostly due to the storylines revolving around finn and treated her in not the most kindest way
but they really did grow up and became each other’s support system and hyped up each other when the other was down . they still got irritated by each other’s certain behaviour  . But i feel that is one of the things that makes a friendship special . In lady or gaga , when Kurt was doubting his uniqueness and taking it out on elliot , rachel was the one who confronted him and told him he was one of a kind and that his uniqueness is the factor that is going to take him to success . Kurt always does the same for Rachel whenever she doubts herself and her talent . In Glease , both of them where feeding off support from each other to face their  exes ( esp the scene where finchel and klaine have that awkward moment in the auditorium , rachel was the one  speaking in behalf of kurt to blaine when kurt couldn’t even get the courage to look at blaine and kurt doing the same for rachel telling finn about rachel’s broadway audition and hyping her up infront of her ex ) .
In swan song , when Kurt was relying too much on props to show off his talent , Rachel was the one who reminded him that his voice alone is enough to capture the crowd and told him to dedicate the song to himself and the struggles he had to go through to get where he is today . Kurt was the one who was always beside her when she went through her first broadway show nerves and even genuinely got excited with her when she got her callbacks .
also they are genuinely such a comedic duo , like in end of twerk coming up with stupid ideas to live carefree ( they are the worst rebels ever ) and in s6 , them as teachers was so hilarious to watch ( people don’t truly appreciate the comedic timing of both these characters as individuals and duo and get a bit caught up in the angsty nature of them ) . and them trying to recruit new members to the club was such a cute and hilarious plotline.
Their duets are just too good , like the only one i don’t listen to constantly is Get Back . their wicked duet tradition , the happy days mashup are two of the things that bring me so much comfort . And Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead and Popular duets accentuate the comedic brilliance of these characters .
And hummelberry in s6 deserves a special shoutout , they were at their absolute supportive and best selves in it with a much more balanced friendship as both of them lifted each other up from the rock bottom they’d reached . the scene in llm in rachel’s bedroom where the moment she sees Kurt in a devastated state , she rushes to hug him and give an ear to him forgetting all about the stuff she personally was going through . Her first thought was to give comfort to her struggling friend , look how much of a growth that is ( maybe even a parallel to the s1 bedroom scene where they were pretending to be friends and actually was fighting over finn ) . she’s the one who helped to arrange a meeting with blaine and was with him giving him comfort during that moment in Home gcv where they are looking at a cuddling blainofsky .  and in transitioning , kurt called out all his friends ( even blaine ), to help rachel with the big transitioning she was going through and made her feel less alone to take that big jump . and when she was contemplating about whether to go back to college or take the new broadway show , he is the one that reminded her  about the big second chance they were getting to be back in the crossroads of their lives and choose the path that they’d neglected the first time.
and atlast the surrogacy , they grew up to trust each other so much to give such an important decision of his life in the hands of rachel .
so yeah , this became quite long , didn’t honestly think i had this much love for this friendship and i feel like i haven’t even scratched the surface of the good parts of their friendship. Theirs were the only friendship the glee writers didn’t forget about by the end of the show and constantly gave development to it through all the seasons . Again , i’m not saying they don’t come with their faults but it is honestly understandable in a situation where both of them are part of the same industry kind of the same deal with klaine

Starkid Musicals Ranked from Worst to Best
Salutations to you, random people on the internet who most certainly won’t read this. I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.
Welp. I finally did it. I've watched the entire Starkid musical library, and I must say, most of these plays fit my writing style perfectly:
Humor that is cynical yet random
Leaning in with comedy while sprinkling in some well-executed drama
An understanding that any type of story works as long as the cast of varying personalities of characters is dynamic enough to result in some phenomenal chemistry.
This is in almost all of their plays, excelled through fantastic writing and stellar performances driving the overall quality. And it inspired me not only to review each musical, but also ranking them all from worst to best. Or, more accurately, least good to most good. Because even at their "worst," Starkid still provides a funny, enjoyable experience that will keep you laughing with its comedy and your toes tapping with its catchy music. So strap in as I go in-depth into how Starkid proves how they are the masters of humor and melody.
(I'll also provide links to each musical, which is all for free on YouTube, so you can check them out yourselves. Just know that their early work is impossible to enjoy without subtitles, so you might want to have Closed Captions on when watching.)
#12-Holy Musical B@man-Everything about this play makes it seem like it's the weakest to me. The jokes, songs, and characters in Holy Musical B@tman just don't hit as hard as Starkid's other plays. It's still good, but compared to their best, the cracks show a lot more. That is, except for the ending. Not only is there a great speech that shows what makes superheroes so beloved, but "Super Friends" might just be my favorite finale song Starkid has ever put out. Holy Musical B@tman may not be the best, but it's at least worth the time.
#11-Firebringer-This was stupid. Really stupid. Funny as f**k, but still pretty stupid. Although I will give credit to one of the central pairings being LGBTQA+...Even though it makes little to no sense based on the characters' previous interactions. But in fairness, Starkid really sucks at writing good romantic relationships, so at least Firebringer has the benefit of being gay. And as we all know: The gayer, the better. The play is still stupid, though.
#10-Me and My Dick-The world in this musical makes little to no sense. Penises and vaginas are sentient and can communicate with their humans. And yet the penises and vaginas can also talk with each other, form relationships, leave their humans, and reinsert themselves into others--Yeah, it makes no sense...But, DAMN, is it funny! Every joke and innuendo Me and My Dick has about human anatomy works, and I could not stop laughing at each of them. Especially the names that were given to the vaginas, which are just...I mean, I'm laughing just by thinking about them. That should tell you how funny they are. This play might be illogical in every way, but if you turn your brain off and watch it for the humor, you'll definitely be in for something fun.
#9-ANI: A Parody-What's weird about ANI is that its best qualities are also weaknesses. A good chunk of the jokes are hilarious and expertly delivered. The issue is that most of them are about taking potshots at the Star Wars prequels, which might be the laziest jokes to make in a Star Wars parody. Then there's the soundtrack, having several songs that are a bop to listen to. The problem is that ANI suffers from the same issues as Tarzan and Brother Bear: Yes, technically, it is a musical, but it's one where none of the characters sing, and some people in the background do all the singing instead. It's all an odd balancing act of quality content made through questionable choices. ANI is still an entertaining play, but the force isn't as strong with this one.
#8-Black Friday-This might be the least funny play that Starkid has ever put out. Not just because it leans extra hard into drama, which was pretty effective during certain scenes. It's just when there are jokes in Black Friday, they tend to fall flatter more here than they did in other plays. Also, the plot of Black Friday might not be the best one to play straight. The serious moments work best when focusing on the characters and their personal struggles, but through the big bad that's supposed to be threatening? Not so much. Even if it was meant to be funny, well, I wasn't laughing. And believe it or not, I consider that to be the best judge of whether or not something is funny. That being said, while Black Friday isn't the most humorous Starkid musical, it's still pretty good. The characters are excellent, the songs are awesome, and the story is somewhat easy to follow. I would have appreciated a few more laughs, but I can respect these talented people wanting to challenge their strengths.
#7-Starship-This play feels very...Disney. It follows a familiar formula we've seen several times: The main character wants more than what he has in his crappy life, miraculously gets the exact thing he wants, falls in love with a girl in a short amount of time, faces off against a campy/over the top villain, realizes the hand he's been dealt isn't so bad, and in the end, gets what he wants anyway. Starship is still pretty entertaining through its jokes, characters, and songs, but it also feels weird that Starkid leans into these tropes when they would eventually make a much better play by making fun of them. The end result is not bad in the slightest, but it's also nowhere near their best.
#6-A Very Potter Musical-Starkid's first production, and boy, what a start to something wonderful. Every one of their gimmicks and motifs is present in A Very Potter Musical. The use of parody to playfully mock characters and stories they love, making songs that are as funny as they are emotional, and creating characters that work because of their lines and the actors' performances. Oh, and also, it's funny. And it’s not just through a parody angle, like making Cedric be a perfect boy who's always smiling. It's also funny through its jokes that work, even if you ignore the fact that it’s a parody altogether. Case in point, there are these two bits, one involving Voldemort and Beatrix with the other involving Ron and Hermoine, that are written and delivered so well that I was in tears much more than with any other Starkid play. When watching A Very Potter Musical, you'll not only understand how parody works, but you'll also gain an understanding of why Starkid turned out as successful as they did.
#5-The Trail to Oregon-What can I say? I'm a sucker for comedic dysfunctional families. And seeing a family of idiots make their way to Oregon via The Oregon Trail parody? Yeah, that's a win for me. The play may be another family road trip narrative, which some people might get sick of at this point. But because the dynamics and comedic chemistry everyone has with each other are on point, the end result proves that you don't need an original story to tell an entertaining one. Although I will say that out of all of Starkid's productions, The Trail to Oregon has by far the worst ending. Without giving anything away, the play spends way too much time on this one stupid joke that any of the characters could make. Comedy is defined by personalities, as are most things, so making the joke work for anyone is a bad move when this one, in particular, doesn't fit as well for some characters as it would for others. Plus, the finale song "Naked in a Lake" is a really poor choice to cap off this musical. It's catchy, but to me, a finale song should encapsulate everything about the story, characters, and themes. Not paying off a joke that I honestly wouldn't want the payoff for. So while the ending could have used a lot more polish, that doesn't change how The Trail to Oregon is a pretty funny play that I won't mind revisiting when I have the chance.
#4-A Very Potter Sequel-Hey, sometimes a sequel is better than the original. Sure some jokes don't land, and some story beats aren't as impactful as they thought they were (Serious Black's introduction, for example), but there are far more improvements to this play than the last one. The performances are stronger, the jokes are funnier, the music is catchier, and the characters are much more entertaining in this play than in A Very Potter Musical. Especially new additions like Lupin and Lucious Malfoy, who provide great comedy and sublime drama at times. And Umbridge. Sweet Mother of all that is holy, Umbridge. While A Very Potter Sequel never made me laugh to tears as the first play did, twice, Professor Umbridge carries the comedy so well that she surpasses all of that. Plus, on top of it all, this play nails its ending through a bittersweet note that really captures what makes Hogwarts so special to these characters. I always feel like Starkid's plays tend to lose steam during the last few minutes, but A Very Potter Sequel is one of the few instances that it just builds and builds to a perfect ending. A Very Potter Sequel might not always hit the right marks, but the results are just magical when it does get it right.
#3-The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals-This one is pretty clever. The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is one of those stories that manages to be explicitly hilarious yet implicitly disturbing. For instance, people suddenly bursting into perfectly choreographed musical numbers in a world where songs are exclusively diegetic is pretty funny (especially through the characters' reactions to it). However, knowing what happens to these people and why they sing and dance so expertly helps make the whole situation pretty dire. It's an excellent balancing act that not many stories can accomplish. And while The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals leans one way or the other at times, it's still all handled really well. Oh, and also, you know how most people say the villain song is the best one in any musical? Well, technically speaking, nearly every song in The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is the villain song. Including the finale, which is just too brilliant for me not to give a round of applause. If you're a person who unfortunately doesn't like musicals either, I'd say be more than willing to give this one a chance. It's funny, catchy, and if you think of the implications, pretty damn disturbing.
#2-A Very Potter Senior Year-...You know how Avengers: Endgame is a bit of a mess, yet people still love it for how much of a perfect (sort of) finale it is? It's the same regard with A Very Potter Senior Year in my eyes. It's far from a masterpiece, but the many, many solid scenes that cap off this series help make me willing to overlook the mistakes. The characters, callbacks, and overall message about how things end was done so expertly well that I physically can’t hate this one. I can understand how it's more of an ok play when compared to the rest of Starkid's productions, but sometimes, ok is wonderful.
#1-Twisted: An Untold Story of a Royal Vizier-...It's Twisted. Everyone loves Twisted! And how could they not? Everything about this play just screams Starkid at their best. The comedy is uproarious, added with the fantastic delivery of the actors and the characters' personalities. Everyone feels as though they have one step in reality and the other in insanity. This, to me, seems like the best type of character work when going for the parody angle. Parody is about giving slight yet snide remarks toward the work you're mocking, which I feel works best when characters drop the suspension of disbelief audiences have when enjoying such a story. And Twisted definitely nails its satire in not only poking fun at Aladdin but also making jokes towards Disney as a brand. From their movies to their inside jokes to their formulas to even their corporate dealings with Pixar, nothing about Disney is sacred in Twisted. But on top of being funny, Twisted might just be the most successful Starkid has been with telling some really compelling drama. The jokes allow themselves to take a back seat to let serious moments play out, and even comedy is added, it provides more for the experience rather than taking anything away. You see this not only through the actors giving it their all but even through some really gorgeous and heart wrenching musical numbers. Oh, and also, Twisted has the best Starkid soundtrack, featuring songs that are epic, funny, and, as I said, heartbreaking. You cannot get better than this and, if you want to get a friend interested in Starkid as a whole, this might be the play for them. Scheherazade may have a thousand tales, but his one is a tale I wouldn't mind hearing for a thousand nights.
And that's about how I feel about Starkid and each and every one of their plays. Odds are your ranking would be much different from mine, and I'm all for that differing opinions. Feel free to make your own ranking if you want because I'm honestly curious where fans would place these plays above or below others. I'm relatively new to enjoying their work, so I have no idea what the consensus is. I do know one thing, though: If Starkid can still be incredibly entertaining through over ten years of content, then I am excited to see what they can accomplish next in another ten years.
