i have now found myself friends, entirely by accident, with lots of hinny girlies [shout out to @whinlatter, who's in the trenches]. you are all trying your best to win me over, but i will not be moved.

so let's do this.

why don't i enjoy hinny?

let's get some common objections to the pairing out of the way, because i think a lot of them are quite unfair and i can see why they bother hinny fans:

i don't think there's anything inherently less interesting about liking canon ships. the fact that hinny are endgame in the books doesn't make their fandom less imaginative or talented, and i think those of us who prefer non-canon pairings need to get over the superiority complex about our creative genius which i have seen a lot of. i like many of the other canon couples a great deal - romione, remadora [which, in an unpopular move, i actively prefer to wolfstar], bellamort [if ya nasty] etc.

similarly, i have no objection to het ships [see above], and i do think those of us who largely read and write slash need to be very careful to avoid a tendency to portray queer pairings either in a tokenising way or a heteronormative one, particularly if we want to say queer ships are just as plausible or supported by canon as the books' het pairings. that said, i do definitely prefer stories in which harry identifies as queer - the fact that he's bi/pan is canon, fight me - and, while that could [and should!] feature in het pairing stories, it almost never does. hinny authors are not the only - or the worst - offenders on this point [i've had some really illuminating conversations with remadora enjoying friends about the way that anti-wolfstar feeling has erased both lupin and tonks' queer-coding in their fandom], but i think hinny is the main victim on this point of my active refusal to engage with harmony.

come on lads, harry doesn't have an oedipus complex. red hair comes in more than one shade, and since lily doesn't have a personality in canon it's impossible to say whether she and ginny are alike. harry does have daddy issues though, which might lead him into the path of men who are also tall, thin, and dark-haired...

ginny is not a deranged fan who stalked harry. she was eleven with a crush and she acted embarrassingly, exactly as - i'm willing to bet - the vast majority of us did at that age. by the time she was fifteen she was out of her blushing era, and good for her. i loathe the way she gets slut-shamed, both in the text and the fandom, and i hope when her relationship with harry ends she fucks literally everyone in sight.

now, the big one: their relationship doesn't come out of nowhere. there are signs even in order of the phoenix that harry has started to notice ginny, and ron has been shipping it for years before they get together - but, also, even if it does start very intensely, that is the case for lots of teenage flings.

so, why don't i back hinny?

well, a lot of the reasons are to do with harry. none are canon, but i do think they can be justified by the text in a way that allows the crashing-and-burning of harry's canonical great love to feel logical, even in otherwise canon-divergent fics:

harry spends the books never seeming to see ginny as a real person. and sure, teenage boys are self-centred, and he may very well have matured as an adult, but it's incredibly easy to write a hinny break-up where she points out that he's only ever seen her as "harry potter's wife"; that he's paternalistic [i'm thinking here of a great conversation with @ashesandhackles about how harry never seems to acknowledge that ginny spends deathly hallows as a resistance leader in her own right - and if i were her i would never forgive him for not including me in plans for the horcrux hunt]; and that his saviour complex canonically drives him to reject other people's input and feelings [even as he matures across the series].

the trio are intensely codependent, and while i think it's plausible that they expand to a quartet/ginny becomes harry's priority once they're together, it's also entirely - and i would even say much more - plausible that they don't.

in canon, ginny is the person who generally initiates their romantic encounters. sorry, babe, he's just not that into you.

harry's all-or-nothing approach to life means that he could very easily become suffocating or neglectful, depending on how you want to write him. the idea of auror potter spending the majority of his time at work, because he won't let evil roam free, leaving ginny at home, makes sense, i'm afraid to say.

and a tomarry-specific reason, because why not: harry literally doesn't give a shit about ginny's experience with tom riddle. i know, i know, he remembers it in half-blood prince, and that's progress from order of the phoenix, but he still sees ginny worrying about the prince's book and totally ignores her concerns. if you're the sort of person [gestures at self with thumbs] who wants to take harry's canonical interest in the mystery of voldemort, canonical belief that he understands voldemort, and canonical belief that his connection to voldemort is a good thing [snape’s right - harry does think it makes him special!] and run with it, ginny is going to be pretty rightfully pissed, and, even if you're not, harry's lack of interest in ginny's own trauma isn't a great foundation on which to build a relationship.

ginny deserves a hot quidditch star partner with precisely one braincell, and i will always make sure she gets them.

they're just never harry.

People who wanted Sofia and Javi to end up together don't understand the show I'm sorry. Raul was literally her endgame from day one. Sofia was never a normal girl and it was shown multiple times that she's attracted to Rauls craziness. They are a red flag couple and it's fine!

The show is a crazy and toxic love story about two deranged people. Raul is obsessed with Sofia and she is obsessed with solving the mysteries she gets from him. Yes she's literally obsessed with his mind and she's wants to be with him. It's okay! That's what the show is about! It was never a normal show and every single one of them is messy. There's no "good" main character because there was never supposed to exist a good character. It's like gossip girl where we are all supposed to root for the bad guys (70% of the time, because I really hate gossip girl for their indecisiveness) but with control z we are supposed to root for the crazy and toxic guys. I'm sorry but it's so refreshing to just drop the moral compass for once! Finally a messy fictional show that ends up being entertaining and is not supposed to give us a lesson on something.

It's their love story and their unhinged way of expressing and accepting their love. Just suitable for each other. I'm really happy about this endgame.

And I respect the writers for not shying away from the theme or putting them into professional help or jail. 😭

during the events of ffvii, how much of sephiroth’s feelings, beliefs, and actions are his own and how much are jenova’s? is he simply a puppet controlled by jenova or does he still have a sense of self? is he still sephiroth but with a personality completely warped by delusions of grandeur, or is there no sephiroth left?

There are alternating explanations. Square changes theirs every other week, while occasionally implying the exact opposite. So here's my interpretation/headcanon, with full disclosure that this is only my personal narrative.

Sephiroth was manipulated and swayed by Jenova's influence at Nibelheim. He was already very much insane from the revelations about his origin, coupled with the culmination of Genesis' betrayal and the trauma of CC finally catching up with him. That said, her influence only heightened his insanity and she gave him the necessary "push" he needed to slaughter the village, becoming completely obsessed with her and absolutely crazed in reuniting with her.

Sephiroth's actions are the product of his own broken mind, but are also driven through Jenova's manipulation as well. He's completely responsible for what happened, but is also acting as her puppet. He's guilty. And a murderer. But probably would have only targeted Shinra had she not stepped in. She took the darkness inside of him and poisoned it as much as possible, using the Jenova cells inside of him to procure the perfect vessel that will carry out her will.

Things are slightly different by the time FFVII rolls around, though no less complicated. Having gained knowledge in the Lifestream as well as begun to fully immerse himself in his powers and full capabilities, Sephiroth is now the one running the show. He can use Jenova as he pleases and he genuinely wants to become a god and destroy the planet. He's completely insane and wants to destroy all humans out of his own selfish hate and rage.

THAT SAID.

The Sephiroth we currently know isn't really "Sephiroth" so much as a culmination of Jenova's needs and desires and Sephiroth's own warped mind and ambition. There are no traits of the old, human Sephiroth. No preferences or quirks or feelings. No memories. No overt sense of self apart from his hate and obsession for Cloud, which is the only real piece of him that carried over. It's the only real piece of his humanity left.

As he currently stands, Sephiroth is controlling everything. It's his will. But it's still not really Sephiroth. Think of it more as a kind of Sephiroth shell that Jenova slipped into. A husk. An altered Sephiroth that shares the old Seph's anger and bitterness and madness, but fixating solely on Jenova's plans for the planet.

There might be a few faint traces of Sephiroth the human still lingering in there, but what's left is just completely broken and deranged and no longer salvageable. The only thing he knows is that he just wants to destroy everything. And rule with his Mother at his side. That's his only goal and endgame. Everything he ever was or valued is gone, dead. There's only him and Mother. Nothing else matters.

Okay, first of all, I am not associated with whoever and whatever.

The mess currently happening on Twitter does not concern me in the slightest. Though I have to say I do not condone such vile attitude, but it goes hand in hand with that fandom.

From the get go, I simply said open ended endgames for the core four. With the 3 current couples being the only secured ones.

I was also told there was content hinting that they could be together in the future. But no context whatsoever.

And that they may regain their memories temporarily. Though the person at the time mentioned mostly Jughead and I didn't feel like there was enough to expand on that.

That's about it.

Yesterday, or the day before, there were some leaks going around and they seemed to align with what I had previously told.

Considering I had no context whatsoever about the open ended content, I felt like that could indeed happen.

But I was skeptical regarding a few things and urged people to wait and see with their own eyes. It's about context and objectivity.

Then turns out it was some very elaborated plan to debunk the open endgames spoilers and expose someone. Very deranged stuff.

Flashback to my friend telling me rvdlat was open to spilling the tea and suggesting I talk to them. Me: Absolutely not. They're fucking trolls.

Pretty spot on, huh.

Never trust a BA. Ever.

But that doesn't change what I've been told by 3 different people.

Hi! this is out of my comfort zone really by doing this, but I needed to say something and you're the first account i thought couple help! but i've been a confident mileven shipper for years now. i've been able to handle backlash through reason, i've never worried about b*lers, let alone paid them much attention. but after volume two, everything shifted. between the hate mike got at the start for merely voicing the love he's had for the girl he's always loved, to the 180 of people strongly believing he's gay for Will again, it's just incredible. it's inescapable. im mostly observing twitter, which i'd say was a reasonably good place for milevens. it's now turned into a whole other world. infiltrated by kids who claim to want rep, which i fully support as a queer person myself, but who do it in exchange for misogyny and ableism. people who claim to love el yet want her heartbroken. and while this post is a rant, it's also one of concern, and id love to hear from someone as reasonable as you. im firm in my beliefs and my love for mileven, but the duffers have always loved their fan service, and this is unlike anything i've seen since fandoms like Sherlock or Supernatural. Essentially, my question is, do you think the duffers will give into this fan service? clearly the reasonable answer would be no, you don't ruin a 4 season build up like mileven for the sake of fan service. But id be lying if I said the sudden influx of B*ler shippers and the likes they've been getting isn't shocking. So what I'm trying to say is, as Mileven shippers, do you think we need to be worried for season 5? I can't believe im evensaying this; i wouldn't have thought it feasible even a year ago, but the public response is almost intimidating. All the best, and sorry for this dump!

Twitter is fun in that there are some really adamant Mileven defenders on there, but it’s also a deranged swirling cesspit of truly startling volatility, so yes, I understand why you’d be intimidated seeing what goes on over there. Especially given the absolute confidence that hardcore B*lers apparently have in an eventual endgame! It’s astounding to me, how much faith they have. I understand why this vehemence from so many people - making tweets that garner tens of thousands of likes - could make anyone’s faith waver, especially given the Duffers’ history of fan service.

But, I’m still not worried. I’ve never been worried. I know that you’re not really worried yourself, but I understand needing a second person to say that they’re not worried, either. And I’m not! It doesn’t matter how popular that ship becomes, the Duffers are going to stick to their guns when it comes to Mileven. They wrote Mike's monologue themselves. They said in a recent interview that they already know how the show ends and they aren’t going to be influenced by other opinions - they also said “we can’t please everyone”. So that’s a precisely comforting quote for your worries, whether or not it directly applies to By*ler shippers (I wouldn’t be surprised if it did).

If you need some more assurance, just consider where Season 4 left off, and the fact that Season 5 is the last season. In these final eight or nine episodes, the characters are going to be very busy trying to save the world. There isn’t going to be time across those episodes to not only break Mileven up, but also to suddenly have Mike go through a complete and utter change of character, come out as queer, and confess out of nowhere to wanting to be with Will.

It would be very bad story telling, and the Duffers are literally better than that. Their canon romantic relationships are all excellently written - Mileven, Lumax, Jopper and Jancy are all so, so good. So carefully developed, with such good payoffs. If B*ler was going to happen, we would know about it by now. It would not be hidden in subtext - see Vickie and Robin, and Will’s sexuality, which have all been explicitly addressed.

When it comes to our Season 5 endgame, Mileven shippers have one enemy and it’s the possibility of the death trope.

just finished shadow and bones. i haven’t read the books but it felt like the show was a bit fast paced but was good to watch, it’s always nice to watch ben barnes, he played his part well of a spurned lover, a derange i suppose. from what i’ve seen the main problem of a lot of people is with darklina. I know why,  it was made fun of and disgraced to the point of hilarity. also it’s funny people say, where was the main couple’s love. it’s there if we just dont choose to ignore it. they have way more love than whatever witcher was trying to shove down everyone’s throat, that was painful to watch. or the horrid mcu ofc loki crap, aunty and steve. they were horrible. mcu has a whole list of crappy straight romances

then again he did heinous stuff, just because he was good looking didnt change his vile actions. he got what he deserved. even in first season if you dont wear rose glasses, it’s obvious he was just a power hungry man. he wouldnt have cared about alina if she wasnt grisha. it’s funny to see people hating baghra, the woman was actual grey character, she admits her faults, is doing right now while darkling is all about blaming everyone but himself and has a great victim complex. not to mention darklina was very much there, their relationship is insinuated again and again. they werent endgame but they were there. i hope there will be other seasons/spin offs.

also vampire knight, i have to say this. but that art, author please finish this story before it becomes so bad it will be painful to look at it. show kaname and yuki together and give yume closure and their hea. i dont give a damn about the kids or anyone else. except takuma and seiren, but i suppose they did live good lives.

i dont know how kaname has gone from this to whatever he and yuuki are in recent ch’s.

the stark difference between art of this time and present is unreal. usually mangakas art get better with time, hino is opposite. it’s like out 30 pages, only in 1 or 2 pages the characters look decent.

That line about Rose being a monster is annoying. Yeah, she's not NICE to Bella but she's not actively ruining her life ala Mean Girls or something. Even taking Jasper/Rose wanting to kill Bella into account, EDWARD WAS GOING TO KILL BELLA TOO! ESME was all right with Bella dying to protect the family! I know that it's Bella's story and maybe Rose would apologize like that, but it feels so much like Meyer using Rose as a mouthpiece to push her "Assertive Pretty Women Are Awful" agenda.

That's the thing: when you actually sit down and try to list out the times that Rosalie was actively mean to Bella there isn't. . . there just isn't much there! "What is she is to me?" is probably the absolutely meanest thing she did/said, and that was literally the first day she met her! She and Edward had been 'dating' for like, what, a few days? I know Bella and the readers are coming at this from a love story perspective of like, oh E/B are endgame they will be together for eternity but they literally JUST started dating so Rosalie really DOESN'T have any connection to this girl yet. "What is she to me?" She's just her brother's brand new girlfriend they just met THAT DAY. No one is throwing around words like "mate" or "marriage" or "let's turn her into a vampire" yet this is very new--and very dangerous, as again, it's literally the FIRST DAY the Cullens officially meet her and already they have to protect her from a deranged tracker. Rosalie's point, while I'm sure coming off as mean to Bella, isn't totally unreasonable. Again, as readers we've been with Bella this whole time, but to Rosalie she's this brand new person that suddenly she is being asked to risk her life to protect.

And the New Moon phone call wasn't malicious, either. She thought Edward would come home if he knew Bella was dead, so she told him. Again, maybe not the best idea, but not actively mean or cruel. She thought he had the right to know and she missed him. Her big crime here is underestimating how much Edward loved Bella but again . . . as readers we're deep into this love story. As Edward's sister . . .how much is Rosalie really thinking about the depths of his feelings for her? I don't know about you, but I don't spend a lot of time trying to gage the depths of MY brothers' feelings for their significant others.

And as you point out. . . Edward planned to kill her. Jasper wanted her dead. Esme was willing to let it happen if it kept the family together. Emmett would have been fine with it. If not for Alice and Carlisle's objections, Bella would be dead regardless of anything Rosalie wanted, said or did. She was never actively mean to her, she just wasn't warm or welcoming, so compared to the rest of the family she comes off as bitchy but . . . she wasn't wrong about this whole thing being dangerous to the whole family. It's um, pretty clear in the books that they all Went Through It because of Edward falling for this random girl. Sure, they had to move a few times after Rose brought Emmett home, but they didn't have to deal with a deranged tracker, or face the Volturi like 2-3 different times, or fight a newborn army to the death.

Again, I get it. From Bella/the reader's POV it's so easy to feel like "why doesn't she like me/us? She's so mean!" but stepping outside that perspective . .. she's really not that mean at all. Actual instances of Rosalie being mean are like . .. the "what is she to me?" incident in the books and a couple of glares in the movies.

Evening, y’all. 

So, v8 is dropping in less than two weeks and with all the foreshadowing of the Happy Huntresses taking on an even more important role this volume we are all, rightfully, SUPER excited to see more of them. 

Like, holy shit. Give me the CHARACTER INTERACTIONS. The EXPANDED UNDERSTANDING OF GROUP DYNAMICS. DIALOGUE.

And y’all KNOW I’ve been losing my mind over the possibility of getting a proper Happy Huntress reunion scene.

So I need to take a minute and remind everyone of something:

Springthyme is not canon.

I need to say this because increasingly, when I see mentions of this pairing in the tags or referenced in mostly unrelated posts, it’s been with an either explicit or implicit statement that “well Fiona seems like Robyn’s girlfriend” or “it really does basically seem canon” and that. Is not. True.

Guys, this is me we’re talking about. Gatekeeping is bad, etc, but also, my Springthyme street cred is not something you’re likely to win a fight about. I have overanalyzed literally every frame Robyn and Fiona have been onscreen, and that’s not even an exagerration, I’ve done shot-by-shot breakdowns and they’ve delighted me. 

And what those moments of tenderness and connection tell us is that Robyn and Fiona love each other.

That’s it. That’s all.

This is not me saying “ugh they’re not a couple you’re reading too far into it” because a) it doesn’t take that deep a reading and b) I’m right there with y’all.

But saying it’s “basically canon” and “if there’s not a Springthyme kiss in v8 I’ll riot” is...completely deranged. Utterly divorced from reality. That’s not true, and even if it was, which it is not...this is RWBY. Kisses are HUGE in RWBY. They’re a MASSIVE deal.

Renora, which is easily the least controversial pairing in the show, the most classic and traditional, the one that’s been in BLATANT will-they-won’t-they since volume 1....didn’t kiss until the middle of v7. Arkos didn’t kiss until the v3 finale and that was solely because Pyrrha knew she was going to die, and the kiss was a bad thing. A tragedy. It was too soon, it was gutwrenching and agonizing because neither of them was allowed the time to come to that moment on their own.

And like, Ren and Nora are major secondary characters. The Happy Huntresses are tertiary supporting cast, and there’s kind of...there’s a lot going on??? Things more important than talking about a relationship that’s clearly firmly established and has been for years???

Guys, Mantle is dying. It’s overrun by Grimm, people are freezing to death, Atlas has just declared martial law and the Queen of Darkness is invading. And these are mature, adult, dedicated Huntresses who have to prioritize civilian safety. This is not a romantic environment.

(@ the bumbleby fandom: See above re: this is not a romantic environment, and in RWBY, agonized high-octane kisses in moments of intense emotion ALWAYS have devastating fallout for the people involved because they’re not healthy. I am once again right there with you, but for the love of pity, PLEASE read the room.)

Read the room. Feel the narrative. Whatever happens, will happen because it was the right moment. Whatever doesn’t...doesn’t, because it wasn’t meant to yet. This is a slow-burning series. Nothing ruins a pairing faster than a story rushing it before it’s ready. Let it breathe. Enjoy the journey.

I need us to not act like assholes about this, okay? Shipping is not about who “wins” or an arbitrary “endgame”. It’s about appreciating the dynamic between characters, and we’re already doing that without “canon confirmation” or a jarringly atonal kiss scene. For that matter, acting like the v8 finale is the “endgame” is ridiculous--v8 takes place over like 36 hours. There will be a volume 9, y’all.

Don’t be stupid about this. Don’t ruin this for all of us by turning bitter if it doesn’t become something that it was never meant to be.

Tap the brakes. Hold your horses. Remember that this show is telling a story. Remember that we don’t actually want relationships cheapened by having the characters IN those relationships act wildly inappropriately for the situation to tick some Relationship Establishment Boxes.

They love each other. It’s obvious.

That’s enough.
