#they just.#I love them.#literally though the movies are NOTHING like the books #the plot of the books is slavery is bad and a corrupt leader will only bring pain and that you must treat everyone as equals and so much mo #re and the films are just #‘oh animal abuse is bad! animals are almost as good as us!’#the books are about the dragons (who are as if not more intelligent than the humans) who were enslaved for centuries overthrowing the tyran #t humans whilst hiccup tries to make peace between both sides and give dragons the respect they deserve #they’re amazing like the movies absolutely did *not* do them justice #the dragons have their own language #some of them are telepathic #some can shoot poison darts #there’s little cards explaining how each dragon works as it shows up in the books #it’s amazing #it’s a kids’ series as well so it’s not like a super complex read #okay propaganda over pls read them #httyd #how to train your dragon

ello ello!! there are many thoughts and few are comprehensible but-

humanity isn't just losing their best pilots to to the kaiju- they're losing them to madness. Drifting with your soulbound- it's intense. sometimes, rarely, but still sometimes, they fall into feedback loops. pain spikes one person, travels through the soulbind and the drift at once, bounces back through the drift and soulbind, and keeps going. at some point it doesn't hurt, even though the strain causes the pairs to bleed (red eyes and red lights critical with failure), and the soulbound pair falls to red. Red pilots focus their attacks on other jaegers, even ignoring attacking kaiju but never going after cities or towns, and no one is sure why.

This is one of the reasons why Cleo and Scott are such good copilots. They're the only pair that aren't bonded. Cleo's reputation precedes her as, simply, terrifying. she has so many rumours floating around that they rival etho's. she's had two partners in the drift that people know about, and there's talk about her straight up attempting to kill the second one. they say she's full of ghosts. etho, one of the very first jaeger pilots, worked with her once and never again, but he always has high praise.

Martyn is bitter. He figured out soulbound must be a jaeger pilot when he first felt the phantom pain of a drift gone wrong. He went to the hospital, then to the press, and Cleo still hasn't forgiven him for it (the identity of cleo's soulbound is the most anyone knows about her, and she hates even that)

Scott, on the other hand, loves the stardom. he never talks about cleo, but he's pretty happy about the personal fame. He's clever, too- strategic and something of an unofficial PR man. He's never been a man for neither soulmates nor rules and that, predictably, makes him a fan favourite. He's the one that coined the name for the jaeger he and Cleo share- the undying star.

Pearl came into the picture late, a little while after Cleo and Scott teamed up. She was elated to finally find her soulmate, and it broke her heart when Scott refused her. Pearl is petty. She waits for the news to report that the undying star is in a fight and then she runs an ice bath and sits in it the whole time.

(cleo and scott are the only copilots who can never fall to red. if the red takes over every other pilot, they will be the last defense.)

important notes:

Tango and Jimmy take the place of Hermman and Newt. a little wacky, a lot of fun. unlike hermman and newt, tho, they work together in their fields. jimmy has the bluest thumb anyone has ever seen- if they need some sample or tissue or even specimens to be kept alive? he's the guy to go to. he's good at the details, good with patterns and how they repeat (over and over again). tango, on the other hand, is the big picture guy. takes big risks, gets big rewards. smart, ambitious. Tango is the one to convince Jimmy to get in a jaeger when a kaiju goes for shatterdome- they're the most coordinated soubound there, there's no one else available, they need to move now. (they're untrained, drifting for the first time- they kill the kaiju, barely, but it's not a fight they return from. they die, but in this world their death is meaningful. in this world, they die together. it is tragedy, and it is triumph)

also- Scar and Grian are soulbound. Grian is trying, desperately, to get reassigned to copilot with Bigb because Scar breaks out These at every opportunity and Grian can't handle it anymore

just cause I'm obsessing over future chapters, Tumblr gets a sneak peak at next Friday's JOBU update: (one day maybe I'll stop tormenting Magnus. (i am lying) )

“Magnus, she’s gone. It’s awful, but…” Uncle Fred’s voice choked. “Nat’s gone.” “There’s so much she’s gonna miss.” This is a bad night. Magnus is in for a bad night. Most days, he’s fine. He’s come to terms with his mom and he’s accepted it all. And then some days, he wishes he could die so he doesn’t have to deal with how much this fucking hurts. People used to tell him it would stop hurting. But it never stops hurting when you have to scatter your mom’s ashes before you take the test for your driver’s permit. “You know she’d be here if she could, Mags.” “She’s not gonna see me go on dates, or prom, or drive a car, or meet Alex, or be at my graduation, or my wedding, or send me to college or… Or…” His eyes widened. There was a photo of his first day of school, held tightly to his mother’s chest. It felt like every ounce of oxygen was sucked out of his body all at once. He wished grief was easy. He wished it was a one-and-done occurrence. But it’s constant. He’s been drowning in it for years. He’s been drowning in grief since his father left, and he’s never going to be able to claw his way out. Magnus closed the photo album and slid it away from himself, burying his face in his hands and letting his body shake with the agony he’s never going to get past, because the burn scars are still prevalent on his shoulders and thighs, and they won’t go anywhere. Uncle Fred carefully lays a hand on his back, foreign warmth leaving imaginary welts on his skin.

Not that this is a fail but it's important to share the creative process and all it's parts so here I was trying to avoid making a ribcage at all, especially not by painting. But I made these embroidered bones and for the project, they are too cartoony so now I am gonna make a whole flippin embroidered ribcage anyway.
