Oh, you married the older sister (?) of the friend/crush you connected with on a dangerous adventure as a teenager? She has some gender stuff going on and was pretty much the only person who could get through to him when he was extremely ill after one of the most traumatic experiences of his life? On a scale of Jerott Blyth to Sounis Sophos, how well did it go?

neuvillette's lore is actually insane. we all took one look at him and went "haha dragon🫵" but i significantly underestimated how big of a role he would play. he's the incarnation of the original hydro sovereign. he took back his rule right under the heavenly principles' nose. he's the one handing out hydro visions now (not even because he has to, he doesn't, he just grew so fond of humanity that he chooses to). he gave away the hydro gnosis bc he straight up doesn't need it. he's planning to DETHRONE ALL OF THE ARCHONS (in a few hundred years, when the traveler's not around to see it, so it won't be awkward for them). he's kind and soft-spoken. he's full of vengeful rage. he's a father to hundreds. he found his purpose after feeling lost for 500 years. skirk pulled him aside for a super-secret convo and when he saw us again he immediately spilled the tea. as far as i can tell, he spawned into existence fully formed. no other character can fucking compare

I'm processing properly for the first time that twelve year old Percy Jackson genuinely thought he was going to die and how absolutely terrifying that must be for him - from the moment he started to fall to the moment he thought he was going to drown from being stuck underwater
The level of traumatic that must be...

So I'm doing my first full qt reread since rott, and also my first audiobook listen, and was listening to the thief on the way home today and had Some Thoughts.
In the conversation about Gen being named after Eugenides the god, and how Gen's mother was a thief but his father wanted him to be a soldier, Sophos is surprised, either that Gen's father was a soldier or that Gen knows his father. And Gen, replies, perhaps a bit acidly, that no he's not illegitimate, and yes he even has siblings from the same father, and yes his siblings are all in respectable professions.
Which of course, given the rumours and speculation about Gen's parentage in rott raises a few questions. If we take as fact the belief that Gen rarely lies outright (but rather gives partial truths and lets people fill in the blanks in a way that suits him), what does this say about how Gen views the MoW? And vice versa? That despite rumours, despite what must've been a complex and at times painful situation, that they viewed the other as their "real" father/son? We already knew Hektor cares for Gen deeply, he funds Gen's heist in The Thief to save Gen's life (though of course we only find out the truth of this in rott), and I've always thought part of the reason he pushed Gen towards being a soldier rather than The Thief of Eddis, was to protect Gen from the isolation of the thieves, their ultimate death in falling, and from the Eddisian court which already viewed Gen with suspicion that could be life threatening as it was after Lader's death. Idk. I was struck by that convo with Sophos in a way I wasn't before.
And then further, I've noticed that in the myths told by Gen and the Magus so far, Eugenides the god is always referred to as "Earth's son", and the "woodcutter's son", despite the fact that his origin tale focuses on the woodcutter's wife's desire for a child (and presumably Eugenides the god was raised by the woodcutter and his wife, we hear of Earth visiting only in disguise to see her son). So, in a way, the god Eugenides also has three parents, just as Gen the thief does. And each Eugenides is deeply loved and wanted by his non-biological (or suspected non-biological) parent. Another similarity between Gen and his god?
I really dk where I was going with this. Just. Thinking My Silly Little Thoughts.

Do you think the show-only fans are wondering about the string of fate? Are they scratching their heads and wondering who’s string that was there if nobody died yet? Do they think it was a plot hole or something? Just curious.

Book #153 - Thief Of Time by Terry Pratchett
(I... hm. I don't know, really.)
I like how this wraps up the Auditors. It feels very natural, for this to be their end-point. Like, it makes sense, for this to have been their trajectory the whole time. Of course they would eventually effectively end themselves by becoming human. Of course they would.
I mean, this may also go down as the only apocalypse in literary history to have been stopped by means of expensive chocolate, but I feel like that's less important... somewhat.
Lobsang is a nice lad, not particularly interesting to me, but nice. I'm glad he and Susan are friends now, that Susan has found someone she can actually be friends with - someone just enough like her to not be freaked, and just enough unlike her that they make a good fit. I'm assuming this is her last book, so... yeah. Good note to go out on. Good luck, Susan. Friends are good for you.
I mean, I do miss Jeremy and Lady LeJean. I liked them, each in their own way, and... well, Lady LeJean got to go out via molten chocolate bath, and that's gotta be a dream and a half. But I'm still sad they went out...
On the other hand, Lu-Tze is hysterical. The con-artistry of a trickster god, the shit-eating grin humour of old men everywhere, and a fitting mentor to a kid who got morals taught by the Thieves' Guild (as respectable a place to learn them as any other, of course).
Also the character who just casually threw out "When in doubt, choose to live!" during a somewhat-chase scene and expected me to just carry on reading and not have five minutes of Emotions about it.
(also, just... what a title drop. like, the book is called Thief Of Time and you're kinda like "yeah, okay, what the hell's that even mean, like, eh." and then it comes back in the end and suddenly it sings, like poetry. and there are cherries on the trees.)

Quick doodle of the main characters for the au with some fun little lore droplets! The three shorties and their one tall person lol. I believe in Atem with his hair down supremacy, so I had to look up pictures with his hair drawn specifically down for inspiration online since I had no idea how I wanted to go about it. I also drew Risa in the Domino High uniform because I want her to attend the same school as the others for narrative convenience.
