Hello my little grieving friends (aka my CREW!)

I just want to talk about how much our flag means death has given me. I have not had internet friends since i were a teenager. They all kind of disapeared over time in the same way as high school classmates went away. I have been on this blog on tumblr since 2010 and i have never experienced what ofmd has given me. Not even in my very derranged ca 5 year long sherlock-era did i get to befriend and know this many amazing people who live in my phone. Some of you have come and gone and that is life, but some of you are still here and I hope I get to keep you here for a very long time. Max can not stop us and I want to be here with you until tumblr is put down like the beloved rabid pet it is.

I think we are all taking the news very hard and I think it's important to remember what it is all about really. It's about love and family and above all else the crew so i just want to show some love for my beloved mutuals. And i hope maybe some of you will be inspired to do the same because its what we need in these dark times. We need to be a lighthouse guiding each other to shore.

First of all @gentlebeard - Ella💕 my beloved honey 🍯 I can not explain properly or even believe how lucky I am that I found you and that I get a little good morning from you every day. We have been talking every single day since the first message over a year ago and I don't remember or want to remember how i survived before that. I will treasure the time i spent drinking pina coladas on your balcony in the sun forever and i hope i will get some more time on that balcony this summer. I have found a pirate bar in Sweden so we can continue our expensive pirate drinks theme that we started in Berlin. Warning: Ineffable tragedy ahead

I was fidgeting with the possible implication of this post by @aduckwithears and this post by @newfangledfancy because there was something in this sword discussion that hooked my little fanart brain. But as I was mentally sketching ideas I'm afraid I managed to grasp the mental image that was vaguely floating in the back of my mind since the beginning of this sword detail speculation.

It was Gaetano Previati's painting inspired by the episode of Paolo and Francesca in the Canto V of the Divine comedy.

If you don't know the episode, it tells the story (an actual historical episode that, at the time, caused such an outcry that some historians compare it to the public reaction that followed Lady Diana's death in the 90s) of a married woman who secretly falls in love with his husband's brother, who secretly loves her back, and for a while they manage to bury their passion, mainly by denying it and not acknowledging it even with themselves. They suppress their feelings so violently that they become dangerously unaware of them, and one day, while they were alone together "without any suspicion" (of their possible fall, so sure they were to have canceled their mutual attraction - but of course it's telling that they chose to spent time together, away from anyone else), they start reading a book about, of all things, the legend of King Arthur, and when they come to the part of Lancelot kissing Guinevere, they are suddenly overwhelmed by their feelings and kiss (here it's were I remind you of the two little figures, one black and one white, kissing in the theater during the title sequence of s2: passion ignited by fiction, be it a novel by Jane Austen or a Richard Curtis movie). And right away they are surprised by her husband, who kills them both with a single stroke of his sword.

This is how Dante tells the story (Francesca is speaking here, and the most relevant part of Dante's retelling is that she and Paolo are depicted as "one character split in two" - I don't need to explain how this is linked to our ineffable husbands) [tentative english translation below]:

"Amor, ch'al cor gentil ratto s'apprende, prese costui de la bella persona che mi fu tolta; e 'l modo ancor m'offende.

[sorry if it sounds clunky, I tried to translate the words in a way that conveys also the most widly accepted interpretation of certain passages, but it's still an allegorical poem from the XIII century... here's some notes to clarify a couple of points:

(1) "beautiful person": to be intended as both body and soul.

(2) "and the way": meaning the way in which they were murdered.

(3) "his pleasure": meaning the pleasure of being loved by him.

(4) "⁠Caïna": one of the 4 regions that form the deepest circle of hell, where traitors are punished (the Caina is the place where traitors of their own family are held, named after Cain).

(5) "without any suspicion": meaning they were so sure to be able to control their feelings that they did not "suspect" themselves of giving in to their passion.

(6) "Galeotto": the Italian name of Galehaut, a knight of the Table Round who is responsible for arranging the secret meeting of Lancelot and Guinevere.]

Funny sidenote: As Rowena moves in on Chuck, getting sweet on him, she starts calling him "Charles," a little nugget for how she'll later call Sam "Samuel," and Cas, "Hello, Castiel."

Ahem. Anyway. The thing is, that yes, Rowena totally does this. We can't really blame her when we look at the tragic happenstances of her life. During the course of the series, we see her make numerous moves to gain favor will powerful beings:

SEASON 10

We see her volleying to make Crowley sit upon a stronger, more secure throne.

SEASON 11

We see her cozying up to Lucifer and getting killed for her trouble.

Next, we see her coming back from the dead to move in on Amara.

She's kind of playing both sides, but she gets sweet on Amara here: "Oh, I can be useful...And even if it is born out of my own self-interest, I-- I care about you. I'm someone you can talk with. Confide in. Have you... have you ever had that? Oh, you don't have to be (alone), darlin'!" 

Then, as I mentioned above, she cozies up to Chuck, and Crowley snarls many a nasty word about her.

SEASON 12

We find Rowena trying to date rich men and lying about her background, painting herself as a posh, well-to-do ballerina.

In an abrupt about-face to insulting Cas (she called him a fish in season 10), we see that Rowena has flipped on her appraisal of him.

Now, Castiel is super hot. He's "the handsome, strong angel," an ideal partner/protector. So, she hits on him. A lot.

Despite her memory of "Cas's face" as Lucifer snapped her neck, her dogged attraction to Cas blooms sometime in season 12.

Perhaps, it's when she and Cas and Fergus are hunting Lucifer together.

(In the same time frame, Crowley is also hanging off Cas's arm, keeping him company, trying to be oddly "cutesy," singing in the car, etc. It's...hilarious. You get the mental picture of them both trying their hardest to get his attention.)

SEASON 13

Season 13 brings us her library tryst with Gabriel.

She says she's motivated by trying to heal his wounded virility/grace/pride, but it's at least partially about his status as an archangel.

And of course, there's security in Sam(uel), but it's all twisted up with him being her executioner, not just her protector.

But in being her "destiny," he also functions as her security. It's very complex. (And kinda sexy.)

SEASON 14

Rowena will hit on Cas as later as season 14's Ouroboros, saying his full name in a similar coo to how she says, "Charles and Samuel." -> "Hello, Castiel."

Castiel, for his part, tends to be a little flustered by her, straightening up and saying, "Hello," back.

SEASON 15

Finally, in season 15, somewhat hilariously, Rowena moves in on Arthur Ketch.

But it's a little different this time, reflecting a more confident, in-control, and emotionally integrated Rowena.

She seems to be genuinely interested in him for his wry, science-loving personality. They banter.

She and Ketch mutually harass Dean for details about the other, like schoolyard crushes.

They had a battle connection in the past, have fought together and helped one another re: resurrection spells, but it is only now that they’re healthy and healed that they can actually see each other.

Rowena throws Dean a breathless, thankful look when he saves Ketch (for her).

She’s reformed, Ketch is reformed. It’s heartbreaking just how excited she is about him. He instills a her hope in her, for the future. (But he won’t sell out his friends. He dies. She won’t let the world die, so she dies, too.)

But Crowley does the same friggin' thing, doesn't he? He is so her child, a tragic mini-Rowena, despite his efforts to look like a big, bad Hell-king. 💔

SEASON 5

When we meet him, we see him backing the Winchesters re:the Colt.

In his early appearance, he does this because he thinks Lucifer is going to wipe out demon-kind.

That gamble goes okay for Crowley, mostly.

SEASON 6

Sometime in this timeframe, he is given the role of Hell-king as a consolation prize, by Ramiel, prince of Hell, who honestly doesn't give a fuck.

In season 6, Crowley backs Castiel. Cas's got magnetism and sex appeal.

As the original "angel's angel" in Heaven, he's a strong frontrunner in Heaven's Civil War simply by popularity alone. So, Cas is the horse Crowley decides to bet on.

Then, Cas turns out to be duplicitous, cunning, and too devoted to his human family to be controlled. He’s way more than Crowley can handle.

There are glimmers of this power imbalance, when Cas on occasion has had enough of Crowley's innuendo-laden threats, like when Cas snaps and crushes him into a wall, for example. But on the whole, Crowley ignores this. It's his tragic hubris.

Eventually, Cas overwhelms him and seizes power, and the whole thing turns out to be a frightening blow to his position.

So, Crowley goes running to his brother Raphael, which is another bad gamble, as Castiel straight-up kills him, and Crowley is forced to flee and go into hiding.

SEASON 7-8

In seasons 7-8, Crowley vies for control of the prophet Kevin, torturing and killing those around him.

He makes sure to kill Meg, who is in his mind a Lucifer loyalist (she's actually a Castiel loyalist at this point, but the Lucifer label sticks).

SEASON 9

In season 9, Crowley arranges a series of events to allow him to dangle Dean to Cain in a bid to transform Dean and destroy Abbadon, the newest threat to his position.

(Crowley won't suggest taking the mark on his own; he won't risk his own neck.) Afterwards, he scoops Dean up, like spoils of war, a dark parallel to the pimp-demon in Girls, Girls, Girls (and Randy).

SEASON 10

In season 10, this bites him in the ass, too.

Demon Dean proves too much to handle, a liability on the job, as he refuses to perform the cold, capitalistic mercenary duties of Hell.

"The little prat’s bad for business. He’s uncontrollable. Must be the Mark."

In a scene similar to Cas crunching Crowley into a wall, Dean throws Crowley down. Demon Dean will not be cowed by Crowley, and he will not be a sidekick, little bitch, or Queen to be "controlled."

So, Crowley goes running to his brother, Sam. He “sells him out" to Sam.

And Crowley goes running to revive Castiel again, to deal with the problem-that-solved-his-original-Abbadon-problem.

And around and around Crowley goes.

Despite everything, Crowley softens to Dean. Crowley's a little bit human now, and it shows. As he softens, his mother appears, making things so much more complicated.

SEASON 11

Crowley tries to muster up the glory of his former evil self--he kills a bunch of swingers for no reason.

Then, Crowley sees a new opportunity to sway a powerful being, and we get Crowley unsuccessfully trying to mold Amara as his newest weapon of mass destruction.

Like with Demon Dean, he strikes fast to scoop her up when she's “vulnerable” and "new,” to get her under his sphere of influence.

Then, it goes badly, as this always does for Crowley. Amara breaks Uncle Crowley's arm and runs away.

In this season, Crowley goes to bat for Cas again, trying to detach him from Lucifer and screeching angrily at Cas as Lucifer beats Crowley up.

In fact, in that brief moment before Crowley even goes to bat, he's actually smiling at Dean and Cas as they reunite, as Dean says, “Cas, we don't have a whole lot of time, okay?"

Crowley is a softie. Cas is his kinda-friend, and Crowley wants Dean to be happy. Crowley's changed.

At the end of the season, we briefly see Crowley complaining about Rowena cozying up to Chuck, while he moves to cozy up to Billie. (Really, Crowley? Stop doing the thing that gets you burned, man.)

SEASON 12

Enter season 12, and Crowley works with his mom again. He and Rowena form an uneasy alliance, and both begin to see family in a slightly new light.

They trust each other a little more, and they hurt each other to try and solve their mutual pain re: Oskar and Gavin.

Hilariously, they both start seeing Castiel in a new light this season. It's like, in watching his devotion and chivalry to his family, and as their understanding of family shifts, they've mutually decided that he's dependable and thus desireable. (The "blue-collar, family-oriented soldier.")

So yeah, season 12 finds Crowley cozying up to Castiel again in order to fight Lucfier--with Crowley being overly friendly and flirty and sing-song to the point that Cas just might bash his own head in.

(In this same timeframe, Rowena warms to Cas, so you have this implication that they're both hanging off his arms adoringly, and he is tired as fuck of dealing with them. I'm sure Cas's tendency to get a little flustered and sweet with Rowena is something that would drive Crowley insane on multiple levels.)

Crowley even risks his life for Cas against Vince!Lucifer. (He wants Cas to be his friend so badly in this era, oof.)

Then, he saves Cas against Ramiel, thanks in large part to his bond with Dean, and Dean thanks him for it.

Crowley, like Rowena, will take any form love. Any friendship. Any comradery. Even scraps. They've got the same neurosis.

Anyway, in season 12 we also have the team-up of the century, where Crowley works with his mother to send Lucifer back to the cage. Victory!

And Crowley has another fatal misstep. His last one ever, perhaps. He thinks, yet again, that he can outsmart another overpowered beast in order to buy his own security.

And so, he locks Lucifer in Nick's body, Ma'lak box-like, and tries to out-bark and out-dominate him.

Horribly, Lucifer doesn't even appear that upset. Horribly, even when he's being humiliated, the demons under Crowley flock to Lucifer. (It's not fair!)

Lucifer even seems quietly amused, like he's waiting for his moment to strike, just as Cas behaved in season 6, quietly tolerating Crowley's goading because he was not actually threatened by him.

(Crowley is no Azazel or Dagon or Ramiel or even Asmodeus.)

And it's fatal. It goes badly. Crowley's gleeful crowing of brains-versus-brawn blows up in his face.

He escapes by the skin of his teeth, and goes running, tail tucked, to tell the Winchesters what he's wrought.

Sam and Dean are horrified, realizing that Jack, Kelly, and Cas are in danger, and so they speed towards them in hopes of warning them in time.

Crowley seems a little hysterical and fatalistic, deciding to back the Winchesters one last time, because, "life is meaningless," and "what's the point of it all."

Crowley lost everything for a job he hated, so he commits suicide, because he's tired and worn down.

He has become like Raphael, "we just want it to be over."

Crowley falls to nihilism.

And Rowena despairs. 💔💔💔

Summary:

Cas's emotions snapped back to reality with a hard lurch by both his Lit Professor and a new student plopping his butt in the chair to his right. His insides twisted immediately, and a flash of something on the edge of satisfying recollection, evaded him.

Who the hell was this dream boat and why was he sitting next to him? Seriously, the guy was jaw dropping. The future Jarhead would probably hook up with the first cheerleader throwing heart eyes in his direction and never even acknowledge his existence, which made him want to eye roll in frustration. 

The Rebel had been on the verge of asking him a question, when he'd caught the eye roll Cas had not actually meant to do. He made a hard U turn, raising his hand with a discontented expression.

"Yes, Mr. Winchester?" Mr. Ketch prompted, seeing his hand in the air.

"Gave my pencil pack to my little brother who lost his, happen to have a spare?"

Cas noticed him squirming uncomfortably in his seat, all for a pencil he himself would have so easily provided. Great. Now he felt like dog crap.

Mr. Ketch regarded 'Winchester' with a devilish smirk. "I expect you to arrive in my class prepared. The pen is mightier than the sword, and it's anyone's guess which demons will be gallivanting through the tales this year brings, hm?"

As Cas was busy kicking his own butt and wallowing in misery, he spotted a pink pencil with a spring loaded eraser topper of an obnoxious red heart appear on New Guy's desk from his neighbor to the right. 

"Thanks," Winchester smiled in appreciation at none other than Lisa Berry, Lehnegate's head cheerleader. 

It hadn't been any heart eyes sending him towards the first cheerleader, but his own pessimistic peepers. Epic start to Senior year, Mills. Hoorah.

Sam and Dean are an amazing team, which got significantly better with Cas to round them out. They are without a doubt my favorite team up in Supernatural. However there are times when I enjoy watching them work in a team or a group that is absent one brother because it’s always good to see Sam and Dean work with someone else! For the purpose of this list I am for the most part, with only minor exceptions, trying to exclude the boys family (Bobby, Jody, Wayward sisters, Charlie, Kevin, and of course Cas and Jack because that would take FOREVER) Some of my favorites are:

Sam and Rowena

Sam works really well with Rowena and the two have developed a level of trust over the last four and a half/five years almost that they have known each other. At first she wanted nothing to do with the boys, then her and Sam came together over they’re mutual desire to screw over her son Fergus. However Rowena has continued to support them in multiple fronts, giving advice and spell work when needed. She isn’t a ‘good person’ but i adore her and you can see how Sam has had an effect on her making her want to be more of a good person as the series goes.

Dean and Benny and Cas

I know I said I would exclude Cas, but I couldn’t leave Benny out and Cas has a special place in Dean and Benny’s relationship. These three were hilarious together. I love the combination of the vampire, hunter, and angel. Benny and Dean has originally started to work together in purgatory due to a matter of convenience, but as the time went on in trying to find Cas, they actually built a strong enough friendship that Benny felt the need to confront Cas on why he just left Dean. I love they’re interactions because Benny is a sassy sarcastic guy and Cas doesn't get sarcasm. Where Dean will stop once he realizes Cas doesn’t get it, Benny will just ride that train out to see where it goes and half the time we have an exasperated Dean in the center of them yelling ‘you’re killing me here!’ However when it comes down to it the three are awesome, fighting back to back in a world full of monsters.

Dean, Cas, and Meg

Second verse same as the first...er, third and second? Now while we only got to see just the three of them function as a team once, it was a pretty good combination. The hunter trying to rescue his brother, the angel with no memory, and a demon out to protect her own ass. They worked well together and build at least some level of trust. Despite not having a memory at first, Cas is still looking to Dean, Dean is once again playing a mediator role, and Meg is shamelessly flirting with Cas and trying to remind him who he is. After adding Sam to the mix it became even better, what with the budding relationship between Cas and Meg and Dean not really knowing how to react. Dean doesn't mind seeing romantic couples, it just makes him really really really uncomfortable when two people he knows really well (Rowena and Arthur, Meg and Cas, Jody in general, Mary in general) seem to start relationships. Although Jody, like Mary, is a special case because he sees her like a mom. I did enjoy seeing Dean trying to talk positive about Meg to a no memory Cas though.

Sam and Alternate Charlie

I absolutely hate the alternate universe Charlie and Bobby because I adored Charlie and Bobby so much and I feel like we got cheep knock off’s in return. (I felt the same about Kevin but at least we got original Kevin back so hey, maybe we can find Charlie and Bobby too). I don’t care much or any of the alternate hunters at all, just not enough time I suppose to actually like them? But seeing Sam as a leader was beautiful and this hunt where Sam went out with Charlie was nice. They did talk about Dean a lot, but this team up was more important to me because Sam was learning to work with others and Charlie seems to be more comfortable around Sam than Dean because of how close her alternate and Dean were. Sam doesn't go off with many hunters very often, and when he does it’s usually originally with Dean and having Dean veer off later. So it’s always nice to see Sam go off with others.

Cas and Crowley

So using Crowley is a fun one because I enjoy his interactions with all the characters. Crowley was a hard one to pick because while it’s hilarious to see him work with Sam; he spends more time on solo jobs with either Dean or Cas...or the occasional three team with Dean and Cas or Sam and Dean. HOWEVER I find his teaming up with Cas as a fascinating series of events. Crowley approached Cas first to work with him and Crowley turned out to be a rather decent business partner, until Cas betrayed him and then Crowley got petty. The two had a very rocky relationship but eventually they started working together, doing cases as fake FBI agents named Beyonce and Jay Z...as if ANYONE would freaking fall for that Cas!  I love how most of the time it’s Cas going off and doing something and Crowley, knowing it is wrong and won’t work, just goes with it.

Dean and Garth

There are a lot of good images that can describe them, but I like this on the best. Garth was an interesting partner to Dean. He worked with Dean a few times and Dean wasn’t sure how to take him for a while. At the end of they’re first team up, Garth had hugged Dean, surprising him and making him unsure what to do. By they’re last team up, Dean is the one who asks for the hug because he knows that is what Garth does. Dean isn’t big on people invading his personal space. The only people he lets in are a very select few  and even then it’s usually only life or death situations where he hugs them. Dean is the kind of guy who doesn’t express emotions. Hell the ONLY person I can remember Dean actually saying the words ‘I love you’ too is Mary. I think there was once or twice where he said it to Sam, and that’s it. Garth is the one who just crashes into Dean’s personal space and ended up forcing Dean to accept him in his life and honestly I love Garth for that. Garth is the kind of guy who sees incompetent and quirky but he is probably one of the most important people you could have in your life because he cares.

There are so many more, but I think this post is long enough as it is. I might make one for each member of Team Free Will to go over my favorite interactions with them outside of people who aren’t in the team.

A little over 6 weeks after arriving in Hollywood

"This scene!" Amanda folded her arms and laid her head on them, glaring at her laptop.

Holly walked over and read over her shoulder. "Still giving you trouble?"

"It's impossible! How I was able to convey it in the novel, I will never know." She buried her face in her arms and let out a frustrated sound. "Thomas is going to have to do without it."

"You live with the man and clearly don't know him. If he asked you to do this scene, then it must be a pretty big deal." Holly patted her on the back. "How about you take a break?"

"I can't. Thomas went to meet with Ryan to try and persuade him to play Arthur. I promised I would have this done by the time he returned."

"Do you honestly think you can write it out in your current frame of mind?"

Amanda pushed away from the table. "No. In my current state, I'll be tempted to kill Elizabeth so that I don't have to write this romantic tension developing between her and Reginald."

"Excellent! Addison! We're taking five!" Holly yelled out.

"Oh thank God." Addison came running around the corner. "If I look at one more swatch of cloth, I will end up trying to persuade Thomas that everyone should be naked in the movie."

"Where are we taking our break? And can there be tacos involved?"

"Wait! We're going out? I thought we would just relax on the couch or something." Amanda looked between the two, worried about being unable to finish the scene.

"Uh oh. She's turning into a hermit. Hunt's influence knows no bounds." Holly teased.

Addison giggled and opened up a drawer in a side table. "I'll call in the order while you force her to relax." She looked up at Amanda, grinning. "We will take you out one night and show you the fun side of living here."

"I've had fun! I did go out the other night to your party. And let's not forget the awards ceremony." Amanda protested.

"Yes you did and you forgot to tell us all about it." Holly took her arm and pulled her out to the backyard. "We need to know everything."

"DON'T SAY ANYTHING WITHOUT ME!" Addison lowered her voice and apologized to the person on the phone. "Sorry! We need a number 16, 8 and two number 3s."

Holly stretched out in one of the lounge chairs by the pool. "So how did it go--"

"I know you were NOT starting without me." Addison plopped down across from Holly and focused on Amanda. "Okay. I'm ready. Tell us everything!"

"You know what happened at the birthday party and the awards show. We went to the ceremony and then the after party." Amanda looked out over the pool, thinking how much fun she had with him on both of those nights.

"Yes, we know all that. Did anything else happen?" Holly persisted,

"Tell us more about the after party. Matt told me that you were drawing quite a bit of attention. You were a knockout in that red dress." Addison leaned forward when she noticed a blush appear. "Did you and Thomas dance?"

She shook her head. "No. We got seperated for a while at the party. Matt danced with me though, which was fun." She pulled her knees up and rested her chin on them. Amanda thought of the model that was flirting with Thomas that night. She also remembered seeing that same woman at the surprise party. "Thomas seemed busy with some model."

Addison spit out her drink. She coughed while Holly hit her on the back. "Model?! Thomas? Did she have black hair? Beady eyes? Too tall and long legged for any normal mortal?"

Amanda laughed at the description and nodded. Holly scrunched her face in disgust. "Monica."

"Who's Monica?"

"Someone who only gets by on her looks. She wants to break into film, but she has a personality like a wet paper bag." Holly explained.

"Holly! That's horrible! Why are you so cruel to those poor paper bags that are damp." Addison's teasing grin faded. "Monica tries to latch on to directors when she sees them. Thomas is the one she wants most since his films hold the most prestige."

"I see." Amanda mumbled. Thoughts of Thomas being captured by the ridiculously beautiful model made her feel...what did she feel? Sadness? A bit of wistfulness perhaps. He certainly didn’t seem bothered by her chasing him. Could he really fall for someone like that? It’s a shame I will never be that beautiful, she thought. Perhaps Thomas might see me differently if... she mentally shook her head. She did not need to start thinking like that.

Addison nudged Holly. They saw the flicker of emotions on Amanda's face. Their hope to see her fall for Thomas grew as her expression became more concerned.

"Did he remain with Monica?" Holly asked

"Hmm? Oh. No he found me and we went home together." Amanda’s slight frown remained as she realized he did the same at the surprise party. Maybe he didn’t feel anything for the model. 

"Thomas is too intelligent to succumb to that creature's attempts to seduce her way to fame." Holly stated with firm resolve.

Addison nodded. "That is one of the great things about him. Thomas never goes for pretty faces with little more than false sincerity behind them. It's amazing how many beautiful actresses he has worked with and never tried anything. I think he is waiting on someone special." She began to emphasize her words. "Someone who can make him smile. Someone he loves to talk to. Be around. Someone he can work with. Maybe share his passion of films."

The gate buzzer interrupted her description. Amanda stood up and went to answer it. Once she was out of sight, Holly turned to Addison. “I think she likes him. Now the question is how do we get them to admit to their mutual attraction.”

Addison shrugged. “I think I might have laid it on pretty thick what Thomas would like in a significant other. We have to think of something fast. If we aren’t careful, they will finish the screenplay and she will return to Cordonia.” Her brow wrinkled as she imagined the future. “He will end up with someone we don’t get along with and she will probably be wasted on some pompous lord or something.”

Amanda returned with the food and decided to change the subject. She did not want to keep talking about the type of person Thomas would end up with. The last thing she wanted was to be reminded that she was once again not the one for someone she cared about. She paused in unwrapping the food. Why would that thought pop up? She didn’t feel that way, did she? No. She simply did not want to see a friend with a jerk. That’s all that it was and all it could ever be. The rest of the afternoon was spent with the three of them laughing and talking about some of the people Amanda had met at the surprise party. When Holly and Addison left for the evening, she returned to work on the dreaded scenes.

Thomas returned much later than he had planned. He could not wait to share the news that Ryan had not only accepted the part, he was also excited and ready to start reading through the script. When he opened the door he smelled cookies baking. He recalled that cookies were the one thing she had laughingly told him that they were her go to for when she was stressed. Thomas warily entered the house. He walked into the kitchen and saw her sitting at the table. His greeting and smile disappeared as soon as he saw her red eyes. “What is it? What happened?”

She motioned to her laptop. “THAT! I can’t get it right.” She wiped angrily at the tears that spilled out. “I have been working on the two same scenes all day! I can’t write it. You need to do them or cut them...or find a new screenwriter.” She got up and checked on the cookies in the oven. He stood there watching her in shock. He had never seen her so frustrated. He went over to her laptop and read what she had so far. 

“Hmm.” He nearly flinched from the glare she shot at him. “You are on the right track.” She scoffed at his attempt to encourage her. “Perhaps we should try and get your inspiration going again.”

“And how do we do that? Please don't say more writing.” 

“Let’s act out the scene. Then you will know how you want the characters to respond. When you go back to writing it out, you will have a clear image in your mind. I think you have been thinking of the story as a whole instead of this scene being on its own.” Thomas took the cookies out of the oven when it buzzed and grabbed her hand. He pulled her into the living room and sat her on the sofa. 

“You are Elizabeth and are about to meet the man who the Queen has arranged for you to marry. Arthur has been told there is no hope for his suit and has left the country. How do you sit? What are you feeling”

Amanda’s brow furrowed. “I am anxious and heartbroken. I have no idea what my future will look like now that the man I thought I was meant to be with is no longer the one for me. I am also highly curious to meet my intended that I have only heard rumors about.”

“Good. Now keep that in mind as I walk in. Reginald would be confident yet deep down he is just as nervous to meet the one he is commanded to marry.”

Thomas left and entered again. He paused when he saw her sitting. With hands barely trembling, she rose and curtsied to him. “My lord, I bid you welcome to my home.”

He moved closer to her and took her hand, a sense of wonder on his face as he gazed down at her. “Lady Elizabeth.” He bowed and kissed her hand. “I thank you for your invitation. I have been hoping for such a chance to meet you.”

“Please sit.” Amanda pretended to ring for tea. She turned back to him with a tremulous smile. “Am I?” She broke off and looked away with embarrassment. 

“Are you what?” He asked.

She took a deep breath and straightened her shoulders. “Am I what you expected?”

His lips lifted into a soft smile. His voice deepened as his eyes wandered over her. “I’m afraid not.”

“Oh.” Her lashes fell to hide the hurt in her eyes. She jumped in surprise when he took her hand and pressed a kiss to the inside of her wrist. 

“You are far lovelier than I expected.” His thumb lightly caressed her knuckles. His eyes lowered to their clasped hands. “Am I what you expected?”

She shook her head slowly. “No. You are not at all what I expected.”

He lifted his eyes to hers, searching for some sign of her true feelings. A small smile appeared on her face. “I am pleasantly surprised with you, sir.” They continued to go through the lines until they reached the end of the scene.

Thomas nodded and broke character. “Now do you know how you wish to write it?” Amanda nodded and quickly typed it up. She then grimaced at the next one that had given her problems. He read over the scene and made her stand up again. “Let’s try this one out.”

He stood directly in front of her. “I am Reginald. I am about to kiss the woman that I am not only engaged to but have fallen in love with. I have discovered that she had given her heart to Arthur beforehand, but due to his displeasing the Queen, he was denied her hand in marriage. What do you think Reginald is feeling?”

“Grateful and guilty for being given a chance with Elizabeth. Heartbroken at knowing that at one time she was in love with another. Hopeful that he can win her heart for himself.” She replied.

“That is my take also. Now I believe Elizabeth is confused, right? She has begun to have feelings for Reginald but with Arthur returning to Cordonia, she is unsure who holds her heart.” Thomas listened as Amanda continued the description of Elizabeth’s emotional turmoil at this point.

“Now I am trying to show the woman I love how much I do without being able to fully give in to any actions.” Thomas took a step closer to Amanda and began the scene.

“My Elizabeth, I have missed you.” He raised his hand and gently caressed her cheek. “Not seeing you these past few weeks...it has been torture.” He swallowed uneasily as he lowered his eyes to her lips.

“Reginald. I,” Amanda looked away as if in pain. “I missed you also.” She looked back up at him and slowly placed her hand over his that was against her cheek. 

“My love,” Thomas whispered as he slipped his free arm around her waist. He lowered his head, his lips nearly brushing hers, when her phone rang. They jumped apart and stared at each other in surprise. She hesitated and turned away from him to find her phone. 

“Hey Maxwell. No, that’s okay. Thomas and I were working on a scene. Yes, I will call later. Yes, I promise. Give my love to everyone. Bye.” She lowered her phone and chewed nervously on her bottom lip. Had he been acting or was there something else there? She looked over her shoulder and saw him walk into the kitchen. He returned with a plate of cookies and two glasses of milk on a tray.

“Come on. You can finish typing up that part and then call it a night. I believe we need a little film noir to end the evening on. What would you say to watching Murder, My Sweet?”

She smiled at the offering to ignore what had almost happened. It must have been my imagination, she thought. “That's one of my favorites. Let me get my notes and I will meet you in there.”

He breathed a little easier when she walked out of the room. He sat down and wondered what had come over him. He nearly took advantage of the script to kiss her. Thomas ran a hand over his face. He would need to be more careful around her. He couldn’t ruin this.

She came back with her laptop and quickly typed out the scene as they had acted it out. She paused and glanced at him. "Thomas?"

"Hmm?"

"What do you think Reginald would feel during the kiss?" She asked as she turned and propped her arm on the back of the sofa.

Thomas swallowed the bite of cookie he had in his mouth and coughed. "He would feel," He moved to look into her eyes and started again. "He would feel that his very existence was meant for that one moment. To hold her in his arms, kiss her." His eyes moved down to her lips. "Knowing she was meant for him would be flooding his mind once he could form a thought. His love for her would be permanently etched upon his heart. No other could ever hope to take her place. He would be willing to fight every step of the way to be the only one who holds her heart."

Amanda's lips parted in surprise. Before she could stop and think about the question, it popped out. "Have you ever felt that kind of love in your past?"

Thomas lifted his eyes to hers. "In the past? No. I have not."

They stared at one another for a few charged seconds before the RKO logo and beeps broke through the stillness. As if on silent agreement, they turned back to watch Dick Powell's portrayal of Phillip Marlowe solve a murder.
