Sometimes I sit and wonder about the paralels in AFTG and I go like "Woooow Nora's brain" yk?

So here are some of them:

•Jean and Andrew both having suicidal ideations, being number 3, not showing their emotions on the outside but feeling so much on the inside (AND letting people think they doesn't care), protecting Kevin (and others in general) and not accepting help until the situation is critical.

•Andrew and Riko both being separated from their families at birth and creating one by force, Andrew doing it mostly for others while Riko did it for himself.

•Renee and Neil growing up in mafia/gang enviroment and scaping it, the whole Nathaniel/Nathalie thing.

•Matt and Aaron growing up with neglecful parents and them being the reason of their addictions (to similar things also) and being "helped" with that by Andrew's questionable means.

•Nicky and Allison being shunned by their parents for being themselves, forgetting all the other things they did to make them proud and loved.

•Seth and Neil trying to blend in (in different ways but still), dealing with jelousy and then Seth dying his last year with the Foxes and Neil who thought he was gonna die his first year surviving.

There are much more but I can't think of all of them now and didn't write them the last time I thought about this. For me it's awsome how maybe a little desition, a person, a moment... can turn you in an entire different person and this books show that SOOO WELL!!

I just got done at a conference on trauma informed care in foster homes and attachment disorders in children with trauma and there was an emphasis on if there isn’t intervention, and honestly? I thought a lot about Andrew and Riko on the drive home and how accurate Nora’s portrayal of them was given the trauma they endured. Heck Neil too.

okay so maybe controversial opinion, but perfect court is actually just a sketchy kpop boyband in a trench coat

ya know, the kind of kpop group that has abusive management, a cult-like fanbase, mistreatment on daily basis, fucked up eating rules. the kind that doesn't pay their members, exploits them, doesn't give a fuck about their health, preys on their talents and dreams… you see where I’m going

on a more serious note though: I love perfect court. I love it bc they could achieve great things, bc it’s like a ridiculously overpowered final boss, I love it bc it’s messy and problematic and fascinating and bc it’s actually devastatingly sad if I let myself think about it

I think perfect court would bring out the worst in all of them, and I’d like to see it happen in the same way I’d like to know how it feels to get shot — mostly just hypothetically, morbidly curious and slightly guilty for thinking it in the first place

I don’t think jean would survive. I think kevin would bring riko’s attention to andrew and riko would “gift” andrew to kevin. I think kevin would realise some day that he ruined people’s lives with his passion for exy and his strive for perfection, and he would die one day full of grief and guilt. I think nathaniel would be cruel and bitter. I think andrew and nathaniel wouldn’t get together. I think none of them would ever know peace or be free

I think perfect court would be a lot like a collision of big, bright stars. it would be grand, and it would be gaudy, and it would end with total destruction. yet people would admire it all the same

Do you think Kevin experienced survivor guilt at some point in his life?

Maybe after seeing what happened to Jean, he thought that if he hadn't run away from the Nest, he could have protected him somehow. Or maybe when he joined a pro team after college and some of his teammates used to be Ravens, and he noticed the toxic and traumatic behaviors that affected them even though they denied it. Even in his life with Thea, we know she had a hard time earning her place with the Ravens, and maybe that affected her in the long run.

Kevin also had bad experiences in the Nest, and sure, he was a pain with the Foxes, but it is shown in the books how much the Foxes tried to protect him from Riko.

So, I think at some point in his life, he may have experienced this guilt of being the one who got away from all the madness and found a safe haven.

I am forever thankful to Nora for these layered characters.

So we all know the Ravens are all paired up and Neil was supposed to be number 3 until Nathaniel disappeared and Jean got the number. Now the thing is, when Neil went to the Nest, he was branded number 4, so that means there was never a number 4 before Neil spent those weeks there, right?

So what if it means that Jean never got paired with anybody during his entire time with the Ravens because the Moriyamas kept the hopes of eventually finding Nathaniel one day. That would mean Jean was constantly alone. He would see all the Ravens in pair, all of them would have someone to support one another except for him. I bet Riko loved to remind him that. In all his cruelty, he loved to remind him his pair isn’t here, that there is no one for him and there never will be.

Maybe Jean got his hopes up when Riko and Kevin started to hear about a certain goalkeeper that caught their interest. Perhaps this man would become his number 4.

Until Andrew told them both to fuck off and Jean remained completely alone in the Nest, resigned to his fate of solitude.

i can imagine there being a campaign to cancel neil when he is in his pro career bc he won’t stop making fun of riko moriyama. they obviously disliked each other in college so people already believed neil’s insults pushed him to suicide but even after his death neil refuses to say anything nice about him. the media interprets this as neil josten being kind of a sociopath who pushed this twenty year old under immense pressure to suicide and shows no remorse, even making fun of him while dead. there’s a video of neil quietly laughing at a riko memorial speech at an exy event and his pr team basically quits.

I think a lot about how Neil should have been 3 (Andrew's number) and Andrew should have been 5 (Aaron's number).

Also what would've happened with all five boys in the Nest?? Like the pair sistem would've meant that Andrew woul've been the only one without a pair, wich is intente as he the only one who IS a pair. But also he wouldn't have ties with the mafia like the other four do.

That also means Andrew and Aaron would've been separated again but this time someone would've chosen Andrew.

when jean is first taking stock of his injuries he says he remembers the “sensation of ripping, peeling skin” regarding riko pulling his hair out and keeps wondering how long it will take to grow back and even cat noticed his hair is uneven and asking if he cut it himself. i really feel like he might avoid cutting his hair for a while. like he’s never had that freedom and now it’s not only the fact that he has the option to grow it out but also maybe there’s trauma that he associates with his hair now? like yes maybe this is just me wanting to see him with floppy french boy hair but also there’s a lot of belief that hair holds memories and i don’t think jean would be ready to let go of everything that’s happened to him.

its cute to me it really is i think they're so funny and kevin is seriously so autistic. riko at this point hasn't interacted with any other children his age outside of little league and kevin is not just patently unusual he's also 1) super intense 2) loud 3) excited beyond belief over having someone to play with. SO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW HAPPY HE IS. most children would be happy to get a brother no matter what but this child in specifically has spent a lot of time with nannies or in adult-world events with his mother so of course he's happy to have a friend to accompany him!!! are you crazy!!!!!! the way i see it on riko's first day with the days (heh) kevin teaches him approximately three hundred different games in a span of two hours that riko either brutally rejects for not being exy (which kevin agrees with but also says they have to play other games because not all children know exy) (he's shocked by this too) or just outright doesn't understand because kevin's accent is so thick :)

BUT I THINK despite riko's fragile state and the ghosts that will inevitably follow him well into adulthood, it is a happy childhood.......... it's hard and at points feels hopeless, but when riko grows older he does look back and understands kevin's intentions and maybe even is a little grateful that someone was willing to reach out to his angry terrified traumatized 7 year old self. i think this k & r are not as close as they were in canon for a myriad of reasons, the biggest one being that riko's relationship to kevin and kayleigh is pretty complex because he feels like an outsider, but they're also a lot more well-meaning towards each other. they don't understand the other as well as they'd like to (i'd wager kevin will spend years and years trying to understand riko and failing to) but i do think they get impossibly closer after (sorry) kayleigh dies, which i can imagine happening in their late 30s to mid 40s. they'll always be brothers <3:)
