Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon Tumblr!
What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It’s open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you want.
How does it work?
The event is run over at the threesentenceficathon comm on Dreamwidth. You don’t need a DW account to play, though! You can use an OpenID login, or post as a guest or anon.
When can I participate?
The 2024 3SF will be open for new prompting between January 12 - February 11. Don’t want the fun to end? You can still fill prompts all year long.
So what’s with the Tumblr?
We figured it might be useful what with so many fandom folks being over here. Follow us for announcements or submit questions to the ask box!
Where can I post my 3SF fills?
Anywhere you want. Fill the prompts first over at the dreamwidth comm (you don’t even have to sign in–anon prompting and filling is just fine). If you post your fills to AO3, feel free to add them to the 2024 3SF Collection. If you share on Tumblr, tag your posts as #3SF24 and the mod team will do our best to reblog them here!
Who’s on the mod team?
The event is currently maintained by @rthstewart, @bywayofmemory, @wingedflight and @oakashandwillow.
Any more questions?
Check out the 3SF explainer over on Dreamwidth. If you still have questions, drop the question in our ask box.

3SF: Narnia, Lucy/Caspian, you’re so gorgeous/i can’t say anything to your face/cause look at your face
The first time Lucy sees him, this Telmarine prince, this soon-to-be Narnian king, her heart skips a beat; it's embarrassing, considering how many years she's lived in her heart if not in her body, that she could still find someone that young so... interesting. But she's too young for him, the way she looks now, and he doesn't look at her the same way she looks at him, and so Lucy packs up that longing and puts it away until a dark and lonely night in England when she can reflect back on this young and dashing prince and imagine what could have been.
And then: a painting, a flood, an ocean rescue, and suddenly Lucy is dripping on a deck in the middle of the Eastern Sea and Caspian is there again--and this time, he looks at her, and blushes, and looks away.

3 sentence ficathon: Labyrinth
Jareth felt himself diminishing the longer he was in her presence, his Sarah, his queen returned to him, taking for herself all the power she had stolen away as a girl. This woman, with her kiss that left him weak in the knees, and the steel of her spine as she commanded the goblins with ease, had warped the Labyrinth to her will, and its king.
With just a kiss, Jareth was enslaved, and he didn't think he'd be rebelling anytime soon.

3 sentence fics - Fargo
The Three Sentence Ficathon is open for prompts right now. This is one of my favorite events of the year. I try to write at least one fic, and sometimes get lucky and write a couple. This year, I went a little overboard. I have a lot of feelings about Dot and Gator, okay, and figured why not share my attempt to ease into writing for this show?
Spoilers for later parts of the season in probably all of them. Definite spoilers for the last two episodes in the last link!
any, any, platonic bed sharing [Dot & Gator]
any, any, I can't walk away from you [Dot & Gator]
any, any, back to the place we used to call home [Dot]
any, any, Cold and Tired [Dot]
any, any, feeding the prisoner [Dot & Gator]
any, any, Hello, welcome home [Dot & Gator]
Still figuring out voices and I haven't rewatched so some of the timeline of events might be off, even in these short little ficlets. But I hope you enjoy <3

west, west away
written for the Three Sentence Ficathon on Dreamwidth, also crossposted to AO3
prompt: Tolkien, any, it is strange, living, to journey west
Sam stood on the deck of the Elven ship, feeling small and out of place in the presence of so many great Elves; greatest of all was the Elvenking of Bilbo’s tales, who stood several feet away, gazing at the disappearing haven and the hills encircling it with a strange, sorrowful expression upon his face, as if he felt the same uncomfortable tug of uprooting that Sam did, feeling as if he had been removed from his familiar soil and planted somewhere he didn’t belong—though he wanted with all his heart to sail West and to see Frodo again.
It was strange to think that a king of the Elves might feel as displaced as Sam did, but Sam felt in that moment that he understood the Elvenking, high and lordly though he was: Legolas had spoken at times, in the early days of the quest, of his people’s history and how they had never known any home other than Middle-earth; they did not know the country that lay over the sea that beckoned to the likes of Lady Galadriel, and the longing for it was slow to waken in their hearts.
And Sam guessed that it was for Legolas, too, that sorrow cloaked the Elvenking’s face; his son did not stand at his side on the ship, but dwelt still in Ithilien; with a pang, Sam thought again of his children, who had been the hardest part of leaving the Shire, and with a sudden flush of bravery, he moved to stand at the Elvenking’s side, and looking up into the Elf’s fair, mournful face, he said, “Begging your pardon, sir, but you look a bit down in the mouth, as we say in the Shire, and I thought I might come and share a few words with you, being out of place myself here among all your fine folk”—a blush crept over his face as he realized he was rambling, and he crumpled the band of his hat in his hands as the Elvenking watched him with curiosity—“and what I mean to say is, I understand this sailing West not being what you expect and leaving behind everything you love for something you’ve never clapped eyes on, sir,” he finished, crushing his hat harder between his hands, and a trace of a smile curved the corners of the Elvenking’s mouth.

Murders - Sweenett
3 sentence ficathon crosspost. prompt: and then the murders began
For a moment, Nellie thought she’d finally done it, finally got through to Sweeney, and he’d agree to run away to the sea, and stop thinking about Lucy and Johanna and the judge. She was ready - her best clothes were packed in her trunk, she’d saved what little change she’d made in the shop, and she would ask him to run away with her over dinner. They’d start their new life together.
And then the murders began.

fill for the three-sentence ficathon prompt child soldier all grown up, which of course made me want to write abt my best girl jyn
"Never find yourself in a place," Saw had told her, "that you can't find your way out of"; he'd repeated it for years to the point that it'd become a mantra, to the point that Jyn had heard it constantly in her mind, both in the fight and in her nightmares (even if the separation between those two things has long been debatable).
That mantra had guided her out of the bunker he'd left her in on Tamsye Prime, spite winning over fear and uncertainty; for years after, it'd had her checking everywhere she'd stepped for exits, and ensured she'd always had some weapon available — including a ready fist.
And even now, when the fight is over, when she's found a place she doesn't want to leave, it still whispers to her, still has her tensing at unexpected touch.
She wonders if it will ever stop.

Josh's Backpack - a 3 Sentence Ficathon Prompt Fill
crossposted to AO3
-
His bag's seen everything. Falling apart at the seams where there was once perfection, fabric dirtied from the countless times a strap or two have been caught in the Metra doors -- not to mention aged coffee stains from all-nighters and morning joes, a quick hand carelessly caressing a zipper to withdraw files stamped with every level of federal confidentiality, and you've got Josh Lyman. The bag's final day is spent hanging by the thread of its handle on the coat rack in the Chief of Staff's office, watching the sun set between the warped glass windows, the too-white pillars, the trimmed bushes and melting snow, and it breaks free, says goodbye, spills out sheaths of pages onto the floor.

3SF: Danny/Valerie, yelling at a gravestone
"It's not funny," Valerie fumes, "You weren't supposed to leave me all alone to deal with this! How am I supposed to finish the job without you?"
The newly-erected gravestone does not answer.
But the ghost hovering above it, the one belonging to the body that has finally been discovered and buried, eventually fades into the visible spectrum to tell her, "You know as well as I do that if I come out of hiding now, Skulker will start chasing me again, and we've got too much else to worry about at the moment!"

3 sentence ficathon: LotR
"Do not be sad, my dear lady, that we have found this time and emotion to share," Faramir began, "when so many have lost life and future in this conflict. Think, instead, that we must live for them, and show the world that not a single life so quenched will be forgotten, but celebrated as part of the future we endeavor to make."
Eowyn brushed her tears away, smiling sadly at his gallant words, before nodding, making his offer her vow within the love she had found in her heart for him.

Three Sentence Ficathon Roundup (To Date)
Prompting for Dreamwidth's Three Sentence Ficathon has closed for another year! Writers can respond to prompts year-round.
This seems like a good time to pause and share what I wrote while it was active. I ended up compiling most (not all) of my prompt fills on AO3, mostly (though not exclusively) with one multi-chapter work per fandom and one fill per chapter:
Brief and Strange (Stranger Things)
Flashes Through the In-Between (The Owl House)
Slivers of Shivers (The Magnus Archives; this one actually combines fills from more than one year)
Small Suggestions (The Hypnotists)
And here are my prompt fills for the Masterminds series, most of which exist as separate works because I didn't realize I'd be writing so many:
Unsustainable
I Try To Own My Destiny
Breaking Containment
Scattered Sketches (3 parts)
Life in the Fishbowl
I probably wrote more for this round of the ficathon than I did for any of the previous ones, and I had a blast! Also, if any fans of Gordon Korman's Hypnotists series are reading this post and want to respond to one of the prompts I left (1 2 3 4 5 6), I would be beyond thrilled. <3

For the three sentences prompt: Celebrian and “mirth.”
Anon, I am so sorry it's taken me so long to answer this one! >.<
Celebrían sits in one of the gardens of Valinor with her sons, listening to them telling a convoluted tale involving their friend Legolas, some semi-domesticated oliphaunts and Arwen and Aragorn's eldest son, picking up each other's sentences as they always used to, and her heart begins to heal over a little bit. More than that, she realises, she is feeling something she has not felt for many long centuries, something that her boys always were so good at provoking in her. For the first time since that fateful crossing of the Redhorn Pass, reunited with her beloved sons, if not with her daughter, Celebrían throws her head back and laughs and laughs, letting mirth overtake her and smooth out some of the cracks that run still through her heart.
Legolas and his semi-domesticated oliphaunts appear in The Care and Feeding of Oliphaunts and New Beginnings, Sunrises and Hope, and the twins will never stop being entertained by the whole thing. :D
