Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, has shed light on the immense pressure and emotional toll she faced during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In a candid interview on the podcast "Call Her Daddy," Biles delved into the internal battles she fought while experiencing a terrifying phenomenon known as "the twisties" during her vault performance. A Champion Tested: The Onset of the Twisties Biles revealed that she had already been experiencing the twisties in training leading up to the Olympics. This condition, where gymnasts lose their spatial awareness while performing aerial maneuvers, can be incredibly dangerous and significantly impact performance. Simone Biles Opens Up Despite battling this internal struggle, Biles displayed immense strength by pushing forward to compete alongside her teammates. She acknowledged the pressure to compete despite her limitations, stating, "I would tell my teammates, ‘I’m fighting demons right now but I’m going to do it for you guys.'" However, the twisties ultimately took hold during her vault, leaving Biles feeling completely disoriented and unable to control her body in mid-air. She described the experience as a terrifying disconnect: "I didn't know how many twists I was going to make… your body and your brain have no idea where you are." The Weight of Expectation: Fear and Self-Doubt The realization of the twisties sent Biles spiraling into a pit of self-doubt and overwhelming anxiety. She confessed to wishing she could simply abandon the competition and return home. More importantly, Biles revealed the crippling fear of public disapproval, stating, "The world is going to hate me and I can only see what they’re saying on Twitter right now." This fear stemmed from a deeply ingrained belief that anything less than a gold medal performance would be considered a failure. Host Alex Cooper aptly highlighted this pressure by pointing out the narrative of Biles "letting the country down." Biles' response, "I thought I was going to be banned from America. Because that’s what they tell you, ‘Don’t come back if it’s not gold,'" exposes the immense pressure elite athletes face, particularly within a culture that often equates athletic success with national pride. A Champion's Choice: Prioritizing Mental Health Biles' decision to prioritize her mental health and withdraw from the competition sparked a global conversation about the importance of athlete well-being. By taking a stand, she challenged the notion that athletes are simply machines expected to perform flawlessly under immense pressure. Following the Tokyo Olympics, Biles took a well-deserved two-year break from competition, demonstrating the importance of self-care and prioritizing mental fitness alongside physical prowess. Her inspiring return in 2023, where she clinched gold at the Gymnastics Championships, solidified her status as a champion both on and off the competition floor. A Legacy Beyond Gold Medals: Mental Health Advocacy Simone Biles' vulnerability in sharing her struggles with the twisties has become a powerful message for athletes and fans alike. It highlights the need for open conversations about mental health within the competitive sports landscape. Her journey paves the way for a future where athletes feel empowered to prioritize their well-being without fear of judgment or public backlash. Biles' courage in prioritizing her mental health has undoubtedly inspired countless individuals to prioritize their own mental well-being. The question of Biles' participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics remains unanswered. However, one thing is certain: Simone Biles has already cemented her legacy as an athlete who transcended gold medals. By prioritizing her mental health and using her platform to advocate for change, she has become a champion for mental well-being within the world of competitive sports.

Dame Laura Kenny Announces Retirement From Cycling
Tumblr media
Dame Laura Kenny: Olympic gold medalist and seven-times World Championship title holder Dame Laura Kenny, announced her retirement from professional cycling on Monday.Announcing her retirement in an Instagram post, Kenny wrote: "Thank you cycling for everything you've given me - including a husband and our growing family!” wrote Kenny on Instagram. "Having people say I have inspired women and girls to get active and get on a bike means the world to me. Thanks to Team GB, British Cycling and all the partners who have supported my journey. A special thanks to every team mate I have had over the years and of course to my family for being the best support unit I could ever have wished for. It's now time to move on but stay following for the next chapter,” she added. In 2012, she achieved her first gold in the women's omnium and team pursuit at the London Olympic Games. At the Tokyo Olympics - delayed to 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic - Kenny won team pursuit silver before she and Katie Archibald became the first Olympic champions in the women's madison, a new event at that year's Games. She is not only the most decorated female Olympian but the first woman from Britain to win three gold medals in a row. Her final significant achievement was taking first place in the scratch race at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022. She won her last world champion rainbow jersey in 2016, on the London track where she made her name, in the omnium and scratch race. Kenny is also a 14-time European champion and won three medals, including two golds, at the Commonwealth Games. Dame Laura's retirement comes less than two weeks after British Cycling's performance director Stephen Park said there was only a "slim chance" of her competing at the Paris Olympics this summer. ISSF World Cup: Rifle Shooter Nischal Bags Silver As India Finish With Two Medals
Tumblr media
International Shooting Sport Federation:  Teenage Indian rifle shooter Nischal bagged silver in the Women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions (3P) at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol stage here to give India a second medal on the final day of the tournament. Her achievement becomes even more credible given this was her very first senior World Cup final. Nischal finished behind Norwegian Rifle ace Jeanette Hegg Duestad with a score of 458.0 in the final late on Monday night. Duestad is the reigning Air Rifle European Champion and 300m 3P World Champion and has 12 ISSF World Cup medals to her name including five gold. She was also fourth in the Tokyo Olympics in Air Rife. Nischal, who is in her first senior year and has three international medals at the junior level, was in supreme shooting form throughout the day, breaking the qualification national record in Women’s 3P in the process. “"t is my first world cup final and I have a medal, so I am very happy for that," the teenager quipped after a gruelling day’s work. It all began with the elimination rounds in the morning where a total of 18 shooters were eliminated over two rounds totalling 73 competitors. She shot a solid 587 in relay one to safely make it to qualification. So did her two countrywomen, previous qualification national record holder Anjum Moudgil and Ayushi Podder, both of whom shot in relay two. Then in qualification, Nischal shot a sublime 592 including a perfect 200 in the prone position, to erase Anjum’s score of 591, shot in the President’s Cup in Cairo last year. Anjum herself shot a solid 586, but finished 10th to miss the final by a point. Ayushi was further back in 35th with 580. The final had a stellar field. Besides Duestad, there was qualification topper (594) and world champion Wanru Miao of China, 2018 Youth Olympic champion Stephanie Grundsoee of Denmark, Italian Olympian Sofia Ceccarello and senior Polish shooter Aneta Stankiewicz, among others. Not one to be fazed, Nischal went head-to-head with the Duestad from get-go of the 45-shot final. She was 0.1 behind the Norwegian after the first 15 kneeling shots and the same after the consequent 15 shots in the prone position. By the time, Ukranian Viktoriya Sukhorukova and Swiss shooter Chiara Leone became first to be eliminated after the first 10-shots in the standing position, Duestad had opened up a gap of 0.7 over the Indian. A 9.4 by the Norwegian for her 41st was cancelled out by a 9.0 from Nischal for her 42nd and the gap widened to 1.1. An 8.4 for the 43rd almost cost her a medal, but Wanru still fell short of the Indian and bowed out in fourth. Thereafter, Stephanie Grundsoee, who had moved up to second, shot a 7.9 in her 44th shot, assuring Nischal of silver and herself settling for bronze. Duestad closed out calmly for gold with a 10.2 and a score of 461.5, a clear 3.5 ahead of the Haryana shooter. Gurpreet Singh was also in action in the other medal event of the concluding day but he could not make much headway, shooting 574 to finish 15th in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol. The 16-member Indian contingent thus returned with one gold and one silver from the Rio World Cup and a creditable seventh position in the standings, considering there was only limited participation by India in the event. Elavenil Valarivan had also won the Women’s 10m Air Rifle gold in tremendous fashion. Earlier in the week, two more Indians just like Anjum on Monday, missed making the finals by the narrowest of possible margins. Reigning Asian Games champion Rahi Sarnobat missed making the final of the Women’s 25m Pistol by virtue of having lesser shots in the inner 10-ring. Also on Sunday, another seasoned Indian shooter Chain Singh, missed making the Men's 3P final by a point. Read the full article

🥇🇩🇪 Happy 2 year anniversary to Alexander's Olympic Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's so hard to believe it's been 2 years since Alexander's monumental win at Tokyo 2020. It was such an incredible moment, he played such beautiful tennis throughout the whole tournament, stopped a top-form Djokovic who had just won 3/3 of that year's Grand Slams en route to becoming the first ever German man to win the Olympic tennis Singles Gold medal 🥰
I still remember like it was yesterday; most of the matches took place in the middle of the night UK time, so I stayed away from any news sources that could have spoiled the results and watched each match the following day. And I vividly remember smiling so much when he won that final gold medal-winning match, and the emotional moment of seeing him stood on the top step of the podium, so happy to see him happy 🥹❤️
And it's truly moving seeing how many people came out to celebrate the win, all the fans who lined the streets of Hamburg to welcome back their Olympic champion, and the heartwarming site of him embracing his parents and Lövik ☺️❤️
No-one deserved it more than you, Alexander. And I'm so happy you can properly celebrate your 2-year anniversary of winning Olympic Gold having just won the Hamburg Open. Both are proof of what you are capable of: the culmination of your mental fortitude and all your hard work and dedication to the sport. Congratulations again, and good luck for the rest of the year. We are so proud of you ❤️
