First things first, I LOVE #OwnVoices stories. Telling a story about your own experience as a marginalised person can not only share an emotional truth that is authentic, it can be incredibly healing. It can be the same for those watching/reading it too. So I can totally understand why some commentators believe the 'only' #writers who should be writing diverse characters should be 'diverse' themselves. Dominant voices have co-opted stories and screwed them up long enough via toxic tropes, incorrect assumptions and plain old inaccuracy long enough. HOWEVER ... ... This leads to *another* problem. I love this series of tweets from Star Trek writer Bo Yeun Kim (slides 1 and 2). I hear similar so much from 'diverse' writers - it's long been the case that UK black creatives are expected to write / make so-called 'urban' stories for example. That's obviously fine when they want to, plus there have been some brilliant ones ... @topboynetflix is immense and one of my faves. But a full range of genres, styles and types of story should be as open to marginalised creatives as standard. THAT is true #diversity and #inclusion. BTW, that includes female creatives, even from fellow feminists. I can relate to this as a woman too. I don't necessarily want to write about 'female' things, why should I be placed in that box against my will? Yet I have been told by people they're 'surprised' I have written male leads, or about love which is apparently 'anti feminist'... I have even had complaints on B2W when I carry articles that refer to character tropes as 'he' rather than 'she', FFS 🤔🤯 So yes, Own Voices stories are GREAT ... But don't IMPOSE them on marginalised creatives. No female, #BAME, #LGBT, disabled or neurodiverse creative should 'have' to write about their 'own stuff' OR do so in the way YOU prefer ✒✏✒ #Bang2write #Bang2writers #amwriting #writer #author #authors #screenwriting #screenplay #novelist #screenwriters #book #novels #writersnetwork #writerscommunity #writingcommunity #writersofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #writersofig #authorsofig #insta #instalike #instagood https://www.instagram.com/p/CLg14cjhltO/?igshid=n5yedkzh9r4t

Drake Confirms Netflix Is Renewing ‘Top Boy’ Series

Drake is quietly making even more headway in Hollywood. His series has gotten the green light for another season on the world’s largest streaming platform.
HipHopDX is reporting that the OVO Boss has landed another win in Tinseltown. On Wednesday, February 26 he posted the announcement on his Instagram. The visual featured printed scripts with the header reading TOP BOY with other details pointing to a second season. His caption spoke to the obvious “WE BAAAAAAAACK @topboynetflix.”

Later that day the official Top Boy Twitter account gave more information regarding what is next for the cult show. We’re back. “TOP BOY Season 2 begins filming this spring. @AshleyWalters82, @TheRealKano, @onlymikes_ and @LittleSimz will return as Dushane, Sully, Jamie and Shelley. Stay tuned.”

Originally launched in 2011 Top Boy is a British television crime drama series set on a fictional Summerhouse estate in Hackney, East London. While the ratings were not groundbreaking it was well-received for its depiction of London’s underworld. The program originally ran from 2011 to 2013. It was unexpectedly pulled from the network thus leaving fans unfulfilled, including Drake.
While attending the premiere in September Drizzy explained how he became a fan. “I was watching it on YouTube,” he revealed. “I became really attached to the characters. There’s a lot of parallels between Toronto and London. It reminded me of people I grew up with and guys that I know. I really just felt super connected right away, but then it disappeared on me. I did my research and found out it had been ultimately cancelled.”
