A mystery was solved today.

So when you book a long distance train in the UK, you're asked to reserve a seat. And it seems optional.

When you get on the train, there are then lights above the seat, green meaning unreserved and red meaning reserved. And whenever I get a long train, there are always a bunch of seats with red lights left empty.

There's no way all those people are simply not turning up. Trains are damn expensive.

WELL. Today, I got into a conversation with another passenger, asking what the lights meant, because they didn't know the system. But they weren't new to trains, or from another country. In fact, they'd gotten this specific train before.

As it turns out, they'd booked through Trainline, and missed the option to reserve a seat. Well, that explains it. BUT.

After a more thorough look through their booking, they turned to me and said 'It turns out I do have a seat!' They'd been automatically allocated a seat. But, not knowing that, they hadn't sat in it.

So no, all those people weren't just not turning up. They didn't know they had a reserved seat
