How do you think Makoto`s and Nagito`s luck work?
Tumblr media
*deeep breath*
*Slams my ruler onto the whiteboard* ALRIGHT
To understand Makoto and Nagito's luck, we must first understand Luck in the Danganronpa universe.
First off their are multiple types of luck, and not all luck talents are built the same. That's the first thing you need to understand, every luck talent is a unique personal talent to each individual. Luck talents can't really be compared because they're so different from each other and can even create other talents.
Case in point the true second luck talent we had in the series...CELESTIA LUDENBERG. While not the ultimate lucky student, her gambling talent is NEAR COMPLETE LUCK, something she FREELY ADMITS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While this kind of thinking is more associated with Komaeda, it is actually CELESTE who first brings up luck as something beyond just chance, but instead as something more akin to religion. She even compares it to fate, Celestia will tell us in her FIRST free time event exactly what she thinks of luck. Which correlates well with Komaeda’s thinking. First of all the immutability of it, that you are simply born with that luck and nothing can ever change it, then there is the thought there is no inbetween luck it is only Good luck or Bad luck and it’s those two things that determine basically everything. Celestia and Komaeda have a very similar worldview, the only difference is the fact Celeste’s luck is only good and has such given her a much more positive view of it. Celeste seems to have spent a lot of time thinking about luck, and has a lot of faith in it, seen how in another free time events despite not knowing how to even play, she won a Shogi gambling competition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Celeste has a habit of exaggerating and dramatics, I think she’s telling the truth about this story, it matches up with her beliefs after all. No skill or talent carried her through to the end and to victory, just pure luck, her gambling luck that is the basis of her talent.
From this we learn that luck talents are much broader then just ‘lucky student’ and can make up a lot of different talents based on how it presents themselves with everyone having unique sets of luck and activation requirements. With both her and Komaeda sharing similar views on luck, it’s clear that those with lucky talents tend to find luck to be immutable and simply just a piece of ones self that can never be changed. Luck is everything to those with powerful enough luck, to the point it becomes almost blinding and overshadows skill, though Celeste seems to feel a bit ashamed that she didn’t at least make an attempt at having skill at Shogi. A little dog can’t become a big dog, and someone with bad gambling luck can never have good gambling luck and vice versa.
This isn’t true.
As you may have noticed if her gambling luck is that good that it overrides skill completely, then how did she lose? By how her talent works as long as it’s a gamble, she wins. Period. Nothing to be done about it. How did she lose the gamble of her life?
Easy, Makoto’s luck works as a luck nullifier.
You may be asking what the hell I’m talking about and I redirect your attention to the short story of Makoto Naegi’s Worst Day Ever.
“People often say that men are defined by their names, and indeed, in his thirty-two years on Earth, Jutarou had never once thought of himself as unlucky. In fact, he had been blessed with abnormally good luck. By the very nature of his work, he had found himself in a number of dangerous situations in the past, but every time—without fail—a series of fortunate flukes guided him to safety.
While his luck could be considered one of his strengths, he wasn’t fond of admitting it.
Rather, allowing himself to end up in situations where the outcome was in fate’s hands was unacceptable to him. He knew good and well that, in his line of work, even the smallest of slip-ups could mean disaster.
Jutarou was a thief.
The most important thing to him when he was on a job was reducing the potential influence of forces outside his control—luck, other people—to an absolute minimum. In his mind, a thorough, well crafted plan was the cornerstone of any job. He always formulated and executed his plans by himself, and any job for which that wasn’t possible, he wouldn’t take. There was nothing worse than being betrayed by a partner who let his greed get to his head, and besides, Jutarou didn’t need anyone slowing him down. And he especially didn’t need to be asking for help from on high.
Naturally, his current job was no different. He had planned everything and put that plan into action all by himself. His target had been a small jewelry store in a nearby shopping district. Jutarou had received information that, despite looking run-down, the store had a hidden stash of extremely valuable jewels. And to top it off, the owner was a bit of a penny-pincher, so security was light.
It was an incredible opportunity—the kind that you only ever got once or twice.
So Jutarou crafted an intricate, but bold, plan, and then he went through with it. Naturally—as far as he was concerned—everything went without a hitch, exactly as it was supposed to. His plan was perfect, leaving no room whatsoever for outside interference. And there had been none.
Spoils tucked away in his bag, he calmly stepped onto the bus. Jutarou liked to make use of public transportation as much as possible while on a job. It was easier to blend into the crowd in a bustling city by riding a bus or train than it was driving a car or motorcycle, and by dressing like a businessman on the job, he practically disappeared.
The disguise worked, too. Not a person on that bus gave him a second look as he took an open seat at the front.
Finally certain he had completed his work, Jutarou let out a small sigh of relief. As the bus vibrated gently beneath him, he silently basked in the satisfaction of a job well done.
And then, a sick twist of fate made quick work of everything he had accomplished. Only, it wasn’t his luck that laid everything to waste—rather, he was just caught in the crossfire of some teenage boy’s misfortune. Some boy who just happened to climb onto the same bus as him. It was a stroke of bad luck so overwhelming that even Jutarou who, up to that point, had been blessed with such incredibly good luck, was helpless to prevent it”
Meet Jutarou who appears to have a luck talent of his own, the main antagonist in the short story. While he doesn’t like purely to rely on it, he notes that he is a very lucky man and multiple times in the story comments about how his luck never fails him. Until it does. Makoto Naegi’s bad luck was so strong, it had OVERRIDDEN his good luck, giving Jutarou bad luck to give Makoto WORSE luck.
This trend continues throughout the story, despite Jutarou’s best efforts and best luck to get himself not arrested, Makoto’s sheer bad luck is enough to dissuade EVERY attempt as the situation only gets worse and worse for Makoto until it ends up with the groceries that Makoto was ORIGINALLY SENT TO GET ending up basically exploding.
This incident directly leads into Makoto getting into Hope’s Peak, as his luck is SO BAD that in that same explosion the original lottery winners invitation gets destroyed and they do a new drawing, this time pulling Makoto’s name.
Luck talents have no effect on Makoto because his luck counteracts it, it doesnt matter how good your luck is, if Makoto’s luck wants to involve you, you have no control over the luck in the situation anymore. From this we learn Luck talents interacting with each other can have odd effects, especially if Makoto is involved.
There is a second piece of evidence that Luck talents aren’t quite as straightforward as “you’re born with it” and his name, is the mortal god himself, Izuru Kamukura
As Hajime Hinata, his luck is well, it’s not great, but I wouldn’t call it bad either. He’s average, very plainly average. Then he got a lobotomy and became Izuru, and suddenly something has changed. Izuru DOES have good luck, and he has an intense amount of control over his luck that he can even can beat Komaeda in a gun fight. Which means not only is Luck a real talent despite how Komaeda bemoans, it has some way to quantifiably measure and implant it as his Luck talent is just as artificial as the rest of his talents. Luck isn’t just chance or fate, it’s a legitimate part of someones body that can be implanted into someone else with the right tools. Which is, SO MUCH TO UNPACK.
We don’t learn HOW they implanted luck, so we can only guess where luck resides within a human body. Wherever it is though, this implies while people are indeed born with a specific luck pattern that is otherwise immutable this pattern can be tampered and changed by an outside source with the right know how. Celeste is essentially correct in the fact humans are born programmed with the luck they have, but we lack the specifics. I am pointing a gun at the hope cultivation program if you’re going to break the geneva convention at least LET ME KNOW how you implanted fucking LUCK!
Luck is beyond just how we view luck in our world, luck is an inherent part of them, I’d dare to even call it another sense. Like a sense of sight or sense of direction, everyone has a sense of luck. Some don’t have much of it, some of them have little, and some of them have enough of it that it almost seems like a magical power.
Of course now that we have a loose understanding of how luck just works in this setting, this tells us little on how luck works for those two specifically.
Makoto’s luck is known to be the most confusing even in universe, as his luck is a liar. Bad luck often is good luck often is bad luck. It is impossible to tell if something is good or bad when it comes to his luck until like three years later after all the dominoes and butterfly effects have mostly settled. Celeste says there is no in-betweens but Makoto’s luck LOVES its grey areas. Making things be both bad and good at the same time, Makoto’s luck cannot be divided into good or bad because it’s always both at the same damn time. The only think about his luck that’s in any way clear is that it refuses to let him die. No matter how bad his luck seems, the moment he could genuinely die, his luck swoops in to grab him from the brink.
Like yeah he lived thats good but now he has trauma and thats bad and now he can help and thats good but that helping is also being used as propaganda and that’s bad. Makoto lives in a state of greys, his luck refuses the black and white views of Celeste or Komaeda, everything his luck does will be both bad and good, creating mostly just confusion. It’s easy to see how Makoto just kinda shrugs it off as just unfortunate and moves on with his life, his luck keeps trying to be good and bad at the same time.
Then there’s Komaeda, who has only bad luck. Which you may be saying “what? But his luck can be good!” and I ask you how good his luck really is? His luck constantly kills the people around him and even killed him. Sure sometimes he gets paltry rewards like money or freedom, but in reality, the scales are NOT balanced. An inheritance can’t make up for dead parents, winning the lottery  doesn’t erase the trauma of being kidnapped.
Even moments where his luck seems to work in his favor only makes him miserable, winning russian roulette wasn’t a triumph or good luck for him really, it only drove him insane.
If I had to name Komaeda’s luck I’d go for something like short term benefits with long term consequences. The bad effects of his luck always echo farther and go on for longer then the good effects which are often quick distractions or quick victories. However Komaeda lets himself settle for this, pretending like the scales actually have any meaning, letting himself have bad luck and thinking the small rewards of it measures up to the sheer amount of bad luck it took.
Komaeda’s luck can give him the things he needs in the moment, but there is always consequences for it’s use. Komaeda pretends like it's an equivalent exchange, but actually looking at, even the 'good' parts often brings him suffering. Like yeah he's rich and has freedom, but he's lonely and unable to connect to people. Even the best parts of his luck are only good short term before also becoming more akin to bad luck.
His luck is basically a deal with the devil, he receives pain and suffering, and he receives... a whole bunch of sodas! Just ignore the fact the scars will last longer then the soda and you can pretend it all balanced out.
It’s easy to see how he fell into the viewpoints he did when he basically has to lie to himself to make his luck more tolerable or seem fair. Especially because unlike Makoto's, his luck seems perfectly willing to kill him if he's not careful.
Of course these are only my current views on their luck cycles, my mind and thoughts are CONSTANTLY changing on this, because it’s just, so nebulous. One of these days I’d love to do a luck deep dive on all the characters and see what other talents are secretly luck talents.

Ok so felt the need to add a bit of a disclaimer that I’m a singlet. I did a bit of digging into DID/OSDD systems and specifically their different opinions on the Fukawas and it was a bit…divisive. Some were strictly against the idea of a host/body, others had different ideas about who the host/body was, etc etc in short: I worry that I maybe portrayed them in a harmful manner and if I did, please let me know so I can either fix it, or delete the post entirely. Mb for the rant but yk

sayaka maizono and selfishness
in an attempt to compensate for the overall hate sayaka got as a character i feel like a lot of people try to sympathize with her morally as a person by insisting she was fully, 100% altruistic in her motivations, that she ONLY cared about saving her bandmates. while she does genuinely love and consider them family i believe its a lot more fascinating to take into account the ways in which the idol industry hollow out sayaka, and how her initial dream (spreading love and hope to lonely people the same way the idols on TV saved her as a child) becomes twisted and forgotten in what she has to sacrifice for it, her wellbeing, authenticity, all for the sake of the image she has to put on to survive in such a competitive dehumanizing industry.....
all her sense of purpose and identity depends on her ult idol title, to the point where she considers murder and follows through with her plan. at some level of consciousness sayaka believes the ends justify the means, there is a fair degree of selfishness in her because she's nothing outside the success of her career. and then there's sayaka's hopeful, last act of true kindness (11037)
this is crucial to what ch1 means as the base of danganronpa, the deceit, first impressions, the way ultimate titles define them in such a world, its themes of fame, idolatry, talent & hard work... it sets the tone for all that comes next.

Makoto, throughout the entirety of Danganronpa is constantly being used as a scapegoat, isn't he. From the first trial to the last he's in the spotlight: not only to solve the trials but as the immediate target to pin their blames on. And then, to add insult to injury he's turned into Hope Incarnate by the Foundation, he's used as a propaganda tool to the point where he himself seems to think he's worthless otherwise. And then the cherry on top: the second he's out of line by saving the Remnants he's turned against.
This is one of the things I love about Trigger Happy Havoc. The four students who survived hell with him, who even helped–if indirectly–to cause Makoto's feelings of only being useful as Hope Propaganda (even if he believes in hope) are the only people he can rely on. These strangers are his only friends.

Hello! How are you?
I have a question actually (obviously): Assuming I wanted to get into danganronpa... where would I need to start? I've heard about games and showd and anime and whatnot. I've tried starting the anime at one point, but found it kinda... confusing? Overwhelming?
I'd very much appreciate it if you could give me some pointers 😅💜
The anime is unfortunately literally the worst place to start. Its SUCH a bad adaptation! I saw the anime first and hated the whole series for years until our partner sat down with the actual game.
You want to start with Danganronpa 1 (also called Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc). Its a visual novel and a mystery story so you can either play it yourself, or just look up a playthrough on youtube by your favorite commentary or no-commentary lets player.
The Game Grumps played it, if that's something you're interested in, but it's actually a very moody and dark game so I reccomend a no-commentary playthorugh or a more low key/serious commentary for the first time you enjoy it.
There are also different social paths where you can interact more heavily with different characters, so if determining which of those relationships you see is important to you, I reccomend playing through it yourself for the first time.
The video game is way less overwhelming than the anime, because the anime tries to pack in like 500,000 words of mystery story into 12 episodes. The pacing is super terrible.
The pacing of the actual games is much slower and easier to manage. I think you'll like it!

Oh I'm a sucker for content about Makoto perpetuating the cycle that caused the apocalypse in the first place because it's whats been expected of him and taught to him, like at the end of dr3 anime how he becomes the principal of the same establishment that did HORRIFIC human experimentation and perpetuated a system that crushed anyone deemed ordinary under its weight. The school ends up taking no blame for its very real and intensely horrific acts because they simply blame despair for it, so of course now that the Ultimate Hope is running it that means all the despair is gone and now Hope will happily shine again. Neatly sweeping under the rug the covered up murders and torture done in the name of that hope before. It wasn't the system, it was a few wildcards, trust the system Makoto, it's all you've been told works isn't it? Society has to have Hope's Peak Makoto, the two are one in the same isn't it?
In the end his title of Hope and the expectations forces him into the same blindfold of "for hope" that allowed Izuru to exist. All he knows and really is allowed to know thanks to future foundation is that he is Hope and has to make more Hope and that as such Hope's Peak must exist as a symbol of that Hope. Which is why when I write post danganronpa 3 content and acknowledge the canon of "he principal now" I have characters who actively oppose and fight against the re-installment of such a system because it's just such a bad idea but the propaganda and hope worship is so intense Makoto doesn't even consider how it might not be a good idea.
Hope and Despair are just so entwined you cannot be an ultimate hope without understanding and being able to use ultimate despair. The two concepts are so twisted together that Junko can cause massive hope if she chooses (ie warriors of hope) and Makoto can create great despair (accidentally letting a second killing game happen thanks to his illegal terrorist rehabilitation program) not to mention hope to one is despair to another, and there really is no way of predicting which way the pendulum will point to until after the act of potential hope OR despair is taken. Ultimate Hope? Ultimate Despair? The talents are one in the same at the end of the day. Anyone deemed to be an Ultimate Hope is one thought of "greater good" away from the next Tragedy. Makoto is no different, and the system will inevitably push his morals to that point if no one intervenes.

Every time I watch a new Danganronpa let’s play (this time, it’s YaBoyRoshi), it becomes more and more painfully obvious that Kyoko Kirigiri should’ve been the protagonist. I mean, I get why Makoto was the lead. He’s your typical, loser anime MC who can only talk about how average he is. But for a detective game, wouldn’t it make sense to play as the actual detective?
This also makes the trials awkward to watch. Makoto has to piece everything together when Kyoko already has everything figured out. Instead of just saying what she needs to say, for some reason (coughgameplaycough), she wants Makoto to speak for her. So, if the whole point of the trial is to piece together the mystery, why not play as the character who is trying to piece things together? Makoto just ends up being a middleman to the real detective.
I mean, I still like the series, but it really didn’t age well.

character meta: junko enoshima's boredom and despair.
i feel a lot of people tend to simplify junko's overwhelming malaise and interest in despair, especially in relation to her talent- and to be honest, i feel not even the writers themselves grasp what they've written for her. it's understandable though, since her relationship with both is so convoluted and complex that it's really hard to define. so here's my attempt at defining it!
firstly, junko does not see hope and despair as two separate, opposing forces. i want to emphasise how contradictory junko is as a character and how it enhances her themes of unpredictability, unreliability and untrustworthiness. she acknowledges that hope and despair are two sides of a coin, unable to exist without the other. junko is even willing to cultivate hope in both others and herself- she will cultivate meaningful relationships with other people, she will give the abused hope and solace, so that the despair that comes after she ruins it all is that much sweeter. it's essentially like yin-yang to her, which funnily enough, ties in with a little piece of gyaru history.
most importantly, junko is ironically hopeful, even more so than anyone else, because she finds hope in despair. she hopes to despair. she yearns for it.
Tumblr media
furthermore, i feel that junko's relationship with hope is more nuanced than just thinking hope is boring- especially now that i've established she will spread hope if she needs to, and finds hope important for despair's existence in the first place. no, what i think she hates about hope is stubborn, pure-hearted, cliche hope- hope that naegi believes in, specifically. we can bring up nagito as evidence of this, whose hope she finds frustrating, but interesting and unpredictable- this can be seen through monokuma's commentary on nagito (who is controlled by junko in both trigger happy havoc and goodbye despair).
secondly, she craves despair because she hopes to rid herself of this perpetual boredom and ennui that plagues her entire existence. not only does it give her unpredictability that she never gets to experience normally, it also gets her to feel emotions that she never gets to feel. i think something i want to highlight is that this desire for unpredictability extends to herself- she wants to feel a despair so intense that even her own behaviour doesn't make any sense to her: why did she kill yasuke? why did she say she didn't care about him, even when she genuinely did? why does she hold onto the notebook, even when every inch of her is screaming to get rid of it and forget it all? why did she impulsively decide to kill mukuro when she was just supposed to be imprisoned? why did she force the classmates she loves so much to kill each other? it's why she changes her personality on a whim- she doesn't want to predict her own actions as much as she doesn't want to predict others.
following that- junko's interest in despair would never have developed if not for her boredom, and so we must talk about her boredom in order to further understand her relationship with despair.
her boredom stems from being able to quickly and accurately process tangible data (speech patterns, mannerisms, body language, posture) and predict someone's behaviour through analysis of that data. this is seen in danganronpa zero, in which ryoko is able to accurately predict how madarai would behave in a situation where she ran away, just from taking notes on the fight between junko and madarai. not only that, she's able to predict people's behaviour and events that may happen months in advance- and she's able to predict even her own behaviour in a scenario where she loses her memory.
Tumblr media
we can infer from danganronpa zero that she felt isolated as a result- like she was living in her own world, separate from others. like watching a boring stage play from the sidelines, with full knowledge of what happens in the play. what she is keen on doing is derailing that stage play with anything in her possession.
as a result, i think junko doesn't pull away completely from boredom. i don't think she can. we must understand that boredom pervades every aspect of her life- junko does not know what a normal life without boredom would be like, and for better or for worse, junko is used to it and accepts it... if only because she knows exactly how to fix it. in the novel, we find insight into how her analytical powers work: she's able to hold off on predicting, but predicting is simple. so i think that holding off on predicting is a conscious choice that she has to make. analysing is like breathing to her, something that she does without really thinking about it. it's her talent, after all.
because of this, i feel that most of her relationships don't stem from finding someone interesting right off the bat- but i think junko lets herself hope that she will find someone interesting and unpredictable enough for her, and jumps into interactions on that basis.
but if that person isn't interesting enough for her, her relationship with them would work on the basis of what it can do for her/what the person can give her: can the relationship make her despair? can their relationship help her further her goals? will their own despair be entertaining to watch?
because, honestly, if she truly found you boring in both regards, she wouldn't even spare you a glance.

May I see the dissection of their morality?
I am tired from work but
tldr; Makoto only seems to care if you do crime directly in front of him and thats weird of him, like i mean same, but im fully aware i make bad choices. Morality to him is less, rules, and more a loose guideline that He has to follow but that No One Else Does. Also might show that he may have low empathy as while he may startle, he rarely seems to get actually distressed about crimes unless he's actively looking at dead bodies, and that seems mostly to be more a shock response, which is useful because without that kneejerk emotional reaction it's easier for him to reason with dangerous people.
He's got a very oddly somewhat pragmatic view of ignoring what in the past people have done to better focus on improving their futures and the futures of everyone around them, which is interesting as Makoto is usually characterized as a very emotion driven character. He knows what they did is wrong, but he lacks an emotional gut punch about it, which lets him keep his head instead of acting on instinct. Which is even more interesting when you remember that Makoto actually at times is quite prone to not thinking bouts of anger.
My low empathy headcanon stays winning

For the cryptid au, Do you have any ideas for the V3 cast? Who would be the human since there is no lucky student? (I’m guessing Kiibo or Tsumugi but idk)
I HAVE A CHART NOW!**
Tumblr media
it took many hours of research (thank you yokai.com and the myths and folklore wiki) and many decisions based on bullshit, but! I now have a finished (sorta) cryptid au chart to go on. More descriptions/explainations below the cut:
**EDIT: Some people raised concerns about cultural appropriation, so I’ve changed Maki to Bloody Mary! I apologize for the lack of research on my end!
Shuichi Saihara - Apprentice Grim Reaper
If Ultimate Lucky Student equals human, then Ultimate Detective equals Death. My working theory is that Shuichi was intended to be Class 79’s resident human, but died on his way to the school and was then taken in by Kyoko as an apprentice.
**Maki Harukawa - Bloody Mary
Specifically the version where she was falsely accused of killing a bunch of kids and then burned alive for it. Now she kills, but only when summoned. Kind of like an assassin!
Kaito Momota - Krampus/Goatman
Kaito really wanted to be viewed like Santa and instead he’s viewed as like. Evil Santa. And he’s sad about it. Also he has a bridge, though I imagine he’d be pretty gung-ho about dancing on it. (I don’t have a good explanation for this either. it’s just vibes.)
Himiko Yumeno - Baba Yaga
More like Baby Yaga, am I right??? I was just going to make her witch, but that’s booooring. I’m probably never going to draw like, Old Lady Himiko, though. Maybe she was just too lazy to age normally.
Tsumugi Shirogane - Lizardperson (Chameleon)
She’s totally plain and normal! Don’t look too closely! You definitely won’t find anything! What is this AU, if not a bunch of monsters cosplaying as humans. And what cryptid would be the best for that, if not a lizard person. As for the chameleon, i like the aesthetic more than just regular lizard face.
K1-B0 - Automaton
Yes, it’s lazy. (Though he’s also in contention for Class Human, specifically so he can claim to be a robot. Because his whole childhood he was gaslit by his “creator” into being told he was a robot. And this is the first school where people hear that and go “yup, that checks out!”)
Gonta Gokuhara - Boogeyman
I really screwed myself over by making Taka Mothman, but I just love that idea too deeply to change it. So, where’d I get the Boogeyman? Well, if we operate under the Oogie Boogie man from The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Boogeyman is basically a sentient pillowcase full of bugs! Sounds good enough to me!
Miu Iruma - Nymph (Dionysian)
Again, I really screwed myself over by using all the horny monsters up on other characters, but I think this works! Dionysian Nymphs are particularly frisky and have a propensity for partying and vulgarity, but maybe the booze will knock a good idea loose every once and a while.
Rantaro Amami - Kelpie
Green hair??? Seaweed??? Hatred of cars??? I got nothing, we really haven’t/didn’t see that much of that boy. This is subject to change of his talent is revealed, in which case kelpie status will probably transfer to Tenko. He’s listed as a possible Class Human because he could be the Lucky Student? But it’s unlikely.
Kokichi Oma - Eldritch Horror
I’m not convinced he’s not an Eldritch Horror in canon, tbh.
Kaede Akamatsu - Sylph
I search high and low, yet found no piano cryptids. So I went with Sylph because they’re air spirits, sometimes depicted as hummingbirds (music theme!) Plus, Kaede can be a little airheaded sometimes.
Ryoma Hoshi - Kappa
This was mostly vibes + I drew a doodle of Ryoma with a Lotad-esc lily pad head and fell in love. Plus, uh, drowning is an essential part of both Ryoma and kappas. Dude would probably be the chillest kappa in existence though.
Kirumi Tojo - Jorōgumo
There’s a lot of Kirumi spider imagery. This seems like a shoo-in.
Angie Yonaga - Living Painting
okay this is mostly just me being on an Ib kick, but it would explain why she’s always smiling. Bonus: Atua was/is the name of her painter.
Tenko Chabashira - Yeti
I…I got nothing for this. I ran out of man-hating monsters, and I wanted something that could beat the shit out of you. It was this or a Chimera. I dunno.
Korekiyo Shinguji - Naga
I only know this because of his FTEs Korekiyo compares himself to Medusa at one point and says it’s his favorite folktale. Unfortunately, gorgon has already been claimed by Miss Celestia Ludenburg, but luckily we can still get that snake monster symbolism. Mask is to cover up that unhinging jaw probably. (Also let’s just say that he isn’t dating his sister for this AU, yeah? I don’t want to deal with that.)
#
Also, some adjustments to earlier cryptids:
Toko Fukawa/Genocide Jack: Some people raised concerns that having any sort of cryptid that “played off” Genocide Jack could be considered offensive to those with DID or MPD, so I changed it. And honestly? The Kuchisake-onna works so much better. Woman who’s insecure about her body image and carries around a giant pair of scissors?? If that’s not Toko, I don’t know what is!
Mukuro Ikusaba: I love Mukuro, but I felt like the Waheela was just sort of me grasping for any sort of wolf symbolism, and it didn’t really work. Now she’s an incredibly intimidating curse demon who can control the weather! Much better.
Junko Enoshima: I think she was technically a Wraith before?? but Lich just seemed more fitting. She’s every DND campaign’s BBG.

Hello? Hello? Danganronpa self shipper? Please share the F/Os and S/Is I crave this content bestie
Tumblr media
Okay, so you asked this like, weeks ago (I’m sorry) but I am now officially not too stressed to enjoy anything other than Pokémon Legends: Arceus. I also had to write this in two sittings. So let’s go :3
My S/I is literally just me plopped in there. A tiny trans-guy being neurodivergent and trying his best. Like, I sometimes play with more backstory of me finally being able to study abroad in Japan and visiting Hopes Peak (except I’ve graduated now without ever studying abroad, thanks COVID :,3) and y’know, shit hits the fan. after those Sneaksy Twins™ start putting plans into action that involve one of them “disappearing” Mr. Jin Kirigiri was like “shit, need to find another one to fill in the gap so that we can have adequate pairs of Make Babies just in case everyone else dies. YOU. ASSIGNED FEMALE AT BIRTH.” :/ Which leads to survival, which leads to Future Foundation being like “hey can you babysit these guys on an island for us real quick” which justifies in my head my participation in the first two games. It also forces me to think dialogue in Japanese, which I desperately need to practice. But that’s all very messy and I generally don’t think about it too hard. That is for “canon” timeline anyway.
I do prefer non-despair AUs though, and also the “before everything went wrong” part of the anime. My idea there is that (by means I haven’t bothered to figure out) a woefully unqualified me is able to sneak into class 77 after stealing a Main Course uniform. Any time someone asks about my ultimate talent the answer changes which eventually leads to “haha, guess and I’ll tell you if you’re right ;)” My S/I does not have an ultimate talent, which does lead to angst. Yes, you already know where this is going, but let’s start with THH.
Oh, just so that I don’t have to name quite so many, I adore almost all of the characters platonically. There are, of course exceptions, but I think only Junko and Hiyoko, do I really dislike.
So in Trigger Happy Havoc, the only character I really ever desired romantically/intimately was Leon Kuwata. Much to my chagrin, he is a fuckboy. That’s okay though, it started out as a “hey if we’re all going to die, why not a little hedonism? I don’t wanna die a virgin, you game?” Alas ._. Anyway, we’re more fuck-buddies than anything, or we were because now I’m in a more committed relationship :3
Let’s hop over to V3 for juuust a sec before I absolutely gush on my SDR2 babes. ^^
So, either kinning Shuichi led to f/o-ing him, or f/o-ing him led to kinning. One or the other. My best friend kins Kaede, so go figure. Either way, I love him ^^ That said, I’m also a simp for Kaede, she’s such a good girl. I like to think of the three of us in a polycule.
I also love love love Kiibo so much!!! He’s such a good boy and he’s trying his best! I like to think of us becoming closer in my Japanese daydreams because I rely on him to translate some of my more complicated thoughts (trials) when I don’t have the vocabulary to communicate them in Japanese.
Okay! Now for SDR2! I could honestly make a separate post just for them. I’ll put the meta in this post and make a separate post for my canon ^^
Alrighty, so I think that my first boyo was Kazuichi Souda, Mr. shark teeth himself. It was real quick, I don’t remember exactly when, but I do remember commenting to my friends that I wanted to kiss him on the mouth pretty early on though. It became a running joke ^^ Pretty simple though, I thought he was attractive and had almost exactly the same personality type as Leo Valdez a la Percy Jackson, who I also had a huge crush on back in the day.
Next, chronologically and in terms of how complicated the route to understanding the feelings, is Fingers-In-His-Ass himself, Nagito Komaeda. So in the beginning I thought he was a pretty decent guy, but 1. I’d been on the internet long enough, and 2. My friend who had played the DR games before had a <_< attitude about him, so I knew something would happen. After the first trial, my pre-played friend was like “yeah, never really liked him. I thought he was pretty annoying” and my friend who was playing for the first time with me was like “lmao wtf” and despite everything, I couldn’t find it in me to hate him. I was kinda confused about it, but hating him didn’t feel right, despite the awful things he did. It wasn’t until I was contemplating after waking up at 3am or something, that I realized I couldn’t hate him because he was just like me. When my depression gets real bad, my self loathing monologue is his self deprecating monologue almost verbatim. From there, I was more inclined to sympathize with him and try to defend him. There… there was a little bit of an “I can fix him” thing going on, I’ll be real. But he doesn’t need to be “fixed” if it’s a non-despair AU and everything is fine anyway!
And finally, the MOST CONVOLUTED WAY TO CATCH FEELINGS EVER. Ft. Teruteru Hanamura :3
So, a little about me: I just graduated college with a bachelors degree in Japanese language. The school I went to required a senior thesis to graduate, for a Japanese degree that meant writing a 25 page paper about something related to Japan/Japanese language/culture. My topic of choice was the localization of Japanese video games for US audiences.
Actually, the whole reason I stumbled upon this topic was with the help of Teruteru and Miss Lotta Hart, from the Ace Attorney series. I wondered why in these two games (that I played in English) both had a character that spoke with a US southern accent, when the original games were written in Japanese. Obviously this had been a choice during localization, but why? How did they talk in the Japanese versions, and what’s the connection between their characters?
Well, for Lotta, she speaks with and Osaka dialect and portrays a character trope for loud, direct, and headstrong characters. Osaka characters are a character trope, pretty cut and dry. Teruteru doesn’t really fit into that, and only speaks with an accent near the end, so what does that mean?
I ended up writing a 7 page section titled “The Fascinating Case of Teruteru Hanamura”. I studied his dialect usage during the trial—it is not the same as Lotta’s dialect—I studied the way that he talks before he slips into that dialect, compared the stereotypes associated with the dialect that he uses and a US southern accent, and finally did an analysis of his character, why and how he masked where he was from, and why localization did a good job of conveying that character arc. Yeah, I did a lot of researching and thinking and writing about Teruteru.
And thesis? It’s stressful. I had a good many breakdowns over the course of the semester, but the only way to make myself less stressed was to do it. The trouble is, I have a really hard time organizing my thoughts on paper, but I can speak them really well. So in true self-shipper form, I found myself talking out my thoughts and planning my writing with fictional characters. And who’s the fictional character who was always on my mind? Teruteru. I ended up talking to him a lot, I got stressed a lot.
And ya know what? I think he’s exactly the f/o I needed to support me at that time. When I get super stressed, I don’t want to eat. I don’t want to go somewhere on campus to get food where people can see me falling apart. But it was a lot harder to skip meals when he was right there to bug me about it. “Honey, when did you eat last?” “Nah nah nah nah, I don’t think so. C’mon sugar, let’s go find something for you to eat.” “I’ll come with you, it won’t be so scary.” <3 <3 <3!!!!!!
So eventually my interest in him could not be considered solely academic any longer ^^;;;
So yeah, Souda-Pop, Teru Chan, and Nagito are my main polycule. I adore them. But this post is a novel as it is, so I’ll make a post just for them to continue gushing ^^

When Ishimondo does an Epic Marriage Mondo takes Taka's name in this essay I will explain.
For Kiyotaka, his last name is an act of reclamation, of restoring something that was taken from him. "Ishimaru" as a family name holds a negative connotation, thanks to the crimes of Toranosuke. Taka was likely picked on partially because of this, subjected to rumors that he's like his grandfather because an Ishimaru is an Ishimaru. However, it is the duty of Taka to prove them wrong. By cementing himself as a just leader, by working harder than anyone around him, by becoming prime minister one day, he aims to reclaim "Ishimaru" for himself, for his father, for his family's honor. He is in a game of tug of war with his family's past, desperately trying to prove that being an "Ishimaru" means you are a good and moral person, fighting against the stigma that Toranosuke gave his own name, trying to reshape society's perception of what "Ishimaru" is.
For Mondo, his last name comes as a burden that he has been condemned to bear. Do not get him wrong, there's pride in being an Owada, in being a Diamond Brother, in being Daiya's brother. But that is what he is, at his core, someone else's brother, only a half. And without Daiya, there is only one half of a greater whole, useless on its own. "Owada" is a reminder of what happened, of what Mondo blames himself for, because "Owada" is not his, it is theirs, it is Daiya's. It is a name that Mondo has likely heard people call Daiya a thousand times before. He will always hear Daiya's name when he hears "Owada". Once living in someone else's shadow, it becomes inescapable. Once a kid brother, always a kid brother. Once an Owada, always an Owada.
Its for these reasons that I feel so strongly about Mondo taking Taka's last name, about Taka giving his last name to Mondo. Because then, love becomes an act of reclamation, instead of fighting and working and struggling, just taking the time to be and to love others is making "Ishimaru" a positive thing in own way- maybe not in the eyes of the whole world, but in the eyes of Kiyotaka, who is just as important. Because then, life goes on and the shadows of the past slowly begin to dissipate and make way for a new future that was never even dreamed of before, as Mondo is finally allowed to move on, to not reduce himself to "Owada" but instead to become his own person. They are both allowed to find themselves outside of their families' pasts, beginning anew for their own sakes. And I think that's really nice.
TLDR; Kiyotaka and Mondo Ishimaru real and true and narratively just very good.
