here's some art i've made for my upcoming custom slugcat mod for rain world, the corrosive!

if you're interested in learning more about it and in seeing in-game footage, keep reading under the dropdown! i'm hoping to release this very soon, so keep an eye out!

the corrosive is mainly carnivorous, but ISN'T able to use spears - instead, you have to bait predators into biting you! by being bitten, you'll release a deadly poison into your assailant, allowing you to eat it instead once it stuns it! however, you need to manipulate them very tactically, as being bitten by a creature while you're still recovering from another bite will always kill you. being taken into a den will also always kill, as usual, so you need to lead them into a spot where you know they won't reach their destination in time.

while lizards may be less of a threat due to your poison, you still need to watch out for other environmental hazards! notably, water kills you. if you're in water for more than a few seconds, even if you're not holding your breath, your poisons will wash away out of your body and into the water. luckily, the corrosive's campaign takes place before the collapse of the waterfront facility, so you'll be seeing far less water in your travels. it's also before the collapse of the garbage wastes, which is your home; you can swim in its dangerous acid just like any other slugcat can in water.

additionally, you can also craft using your bodily chemicals! if you swallow a piece of rubbish, it'll be dissolved and congealed into a slimeball. you can stick slimeballs onto a wall to climb up it, making up for your inability to use spears for traversal. you can also stick slimeballs onto creatures to slow down their movement, potentially buying you more time before you get taken into a creature's den. be careful with these as well - once you spit them up, you can't swallow them again, and they melt in water in the same way that you do.

So I've seen a lot of talk from people who allow that Israel was justified to attack Gaza after October 7th, but they feel that Israel still attacked too indiscriminately, killed too many Palestinians, and destroyed too much of Gaza. Two particular hangups I've seen most commonly are the idea that Israel should have done a "tactical counter-terrorism" action rather than a ground invasion, and a specific objection to Israel dropping 2000 pound bombs on Gaza specifically. I don't feel that I know enough about military tactics, so I don't know how legitimate it would have been for Israel to go into Gaza "tactically" or to drop smaller bombs, but I suspect Hamas would be a lot stronger than it is currently, and the same people would still be tut-tutting Israel's actions (if not calling them out with equal outrage). It's very frustrating

Everyone wants a better alternative but nobody describes what it is. Reminds me of the recent post about the Houthis - "don't bomb them, you need to find a way to get rid of the Red Sea embargo that only kills the badguys and nobody else." Okay, I'll just ask the genie of the lamp to magic them away. There are no options for going into Gaza that aren't utterly horrible. Hamas knows this, it was the whole point of their trap, and it is working.

Here's a fair-minded, moving essay by a Gazan Palestinian saying Israel needs "targeted, low-intensity, long-term operation[s] that could sustainably reduce Hamas’ military capabilities and create conditions to introduce a new administration in Gaza," and also admitting "tunnel warfare is dirty, complicated, costly and requires lengthy efforts and campaigns, not the short and swift operations upon which Israel’s military doctrine is built."

IOW, "go in and kill Hamas and destroy everything they have - but don't kill anybody else. Find a way to do it slower and smaller and neater, but still make sure you win."

It doesn't work that way. The tunnels are obviously boobytrapped, how are you supposed to order men in? The problem isn't expense, the problem is failure. Also a slow, prolonged ground campaign would require a lasting re-occupation, another lose-lose. Israel has purportedly been using the 2,000 pound bombs as bunker-busters to collapse the tunnels - maybe that's working, but it also kills the hell out of people on the surface, again part of the trap. I am disappointed that the IDF hadn't spent every waking hour the last decade building some technical gizmo that could make the tunnels uninhabitable, some kind of seismic or ultrasonic whatzit. I said a while back that I was in favor of flooding the tunnels and fixing the environmental consequences later. I've got messages in my inbox now urging me not to take that stance, that Israel should not be seen as "salting the earth," but it doesn't matter since it seems Israel isn't actually doing it, for whatever reason, so there's no point in a Tumblr blog taking a stance either way.

Tom Friedman is another useless Boomer leftover from the '90s and his "philosophy-of-cab-drivers" shtick is laughable, but he actually raised a good point here:

Netanyahu, I would argue, doesn’t want to win. He wants to be winning, OK, that is, he wants to be able to say, we’re winning. We’re winning. We’re winning. It’s just around the corner. But he doesn’t want to actually win because, if the war actually ends, two things are going to happen. Then he can no longer avoid what is the new political end state. And I believe there will be an eruption, a massive eruption, of Israeli anger at him that I hope and pray will drive him from power because I believe he is not only the worst leader in Israel’s history. I believe he’s the worst leader in Jewish history.

And that’s a long history. And what is Netanyahu’s calculation? It’s very simple. If he is not in power and has to face the conclusion of his trial and three corruption charges without the protection and influence that comes over the judiciary from being in power, he has a very good chance of going to jail. People forget. Israel jailed a president and a former prime minister. They’re not afraid to do that. And he does not want to go to jail. And he does not want to give up power.

And so this is a terrible situation where Israel is in a existential war, and its prime minister has basically dual loyalties, one to the state and one to himself. And at every turn, he is prioritizing himself.

I wish I could totally rule out the possibility that Netanyahu is going to try to drag this out until Trump's inauguration next year. I can't.

This is definitely my favourite Pixar movie, it's absolutely gorgeous. The first half of the movie has literally no dialogue but still manages to be so cute and expressive, WALL-E is a wonderful protagonist and his romance with EVE is adorable, the environmental message is very strong. S tier movie, I adore it.

Robots <3 it's a beautiful story about humanity and joy and robots finding love and how having consumerism be the main controlling factor in life is awful shallow and miserable and you have to have passion and enjoy the small things in life.

since this seems to be my topic of obsession for today...

turns out Bluesky internally uses content-based addressing and IPFS. I don't have a lot of use for it since it's a Twitter clone, and I've never got on very well with Twitter. Bluesky hides most of that from the user - it looks just like any old web app backed by a central server. i need to look into this more, Bluesky is taking inspiration from IPFS but it's using its own protocol, and it is doing some good things. I think its protocols could be used for something more Tumblr-like.

there's a protocol called PubSub which sounds like it does a lot of what I want, or rather gives you the low-level framework to broadcast info across a decentralised network. you could build a social network on top of that. IPFS uses it as one way of handling mutable data, like 'my website just updated'.

there's an absolute plethora of ideas, protocols, and tools for decentralised file sharing, decentralised messaging, decentralised social networks. this broad idea space is very much the hot new thing at the moment. some of them seem like they're growing. a lot of them have glossy websites with animations and stock photos of smiling people. it's hard to know in advance what's worth paying attention to. the whole field is dense with acronyms and rather abstruse concepts. which unfortunately means the current audience tends to be limited to tech nerds (c'est moi) and crypto cultists (ce n'est pas moi. merde!).

Briar is a protocol I find personally very appealing. it's security-oriented, designed to be crazy resilient, creating a mesh network through whatever protocols are available. you use it for E2E-encrypted messaging, but also you can use it for threaded discussions and blogs. right now it's only available for phones but they're working on a desktop version. the primary use case seems to be like "you're at a protest and the gov shuts off the internet", but it would be a very sexy place to put your blog. that said, I expect it would not be very fast at all.

the major encryptable, decentralised Discord/IRC alternative is Matrix. I broadly like the look of it, but we have the same problem of inertia getting people to switch from Discord, and there's still some jank I encountered when I tried it.

there's a lot of cryptocurrency in this whole area. (not surprising since the underlying tech of crypto is also hash-based, and there's ideological overlap between crypto and torrent people, because 'decentralised').

notably, there's a companion project to IPFS, a complicated scheme called FileCoin which is designed to encourage people to host data for a certain period in return for FileCoin tokens. you get FileCoins for consistently holding onto the data, and you lose a stake of FileCoins if you delete it prematurely. these FileCoins can then be used mainly to pay other people to host data for you: you pay FileCoins to a host, and pay them again to fetch your data(!). or you can trade them for other cryptocurrencies.

I'll acknowledge it doesn't seem as intrinsically environmentally corrosive as proof-of-work crypto, or even as simply 'the rich get richer' as proof-of-stake crypto. it's not filling up HDDs with random crap either. though it does sound like it requires quite a bit of CPU work to be done in all the hashing for the 'sealing' process.

I'm still not entirely convinced of the benefit this scheme brings. crypto stuff has a tendency to go belly-up very abruptly when speculative bubbles pop, so I wouldn't be super excited to rely on FileCoin for archiving some valuable bit of data. of course any offsite backup carries risk, e.g. Dropbox could go bankrupt one day. but I'm way less convinced of the benefits of something like FileCoin than IPFS. I guess it remains to be seen if this takes off.

Wow, I am just besides myself with how amazingly receptive and welcoming everyone has been to my silly little König story. Reading in storage closets at work, affirming bass player fetishes, offering translation help, love of environmental descriptions (ah yes, ecphrasis, my love!) asks, comments, just generally such sweet things, it's been an absolute honor to read everything everyone has been saying here! I did want to briefly explain that since this is a side-blog, I will not respond to comments/tags directly because tumblr would make me do that with my main blog (which is related to people I know irl, and I love them but I do not want my roommate reading my COD smut...) but everything is read and deeply appreciated. Please feel free to send asks (messages are more difficult for me to answer in depth...) As for other house keeping, please please please have an age in bio, or some descriptor that you're of age in some way, also blank blogs are terribly suspicious, changing pfp and descriptions go a long long way! He’s a vision, he’s hard to miss on the horizon, he stands out like a mountain lion against his fellow men. He sways his hips wide, the trusty Glock Field knife he keeps on his belt shines like a beacon. It’s such an outrageously cocky move, to keep glinting metal on his person when she’s sure he’s supposed to be stealthy. He’s tall as a tree and broad as a train and always has some hood covering his face. He’s sniper candy, he’s so obviously right there it makes her dig blunt nails into her arm in frustration. He’s hard to miss, should be her straight shot. 

But he never is. 

She never gets the barked orders, the confirmation. She’s asked a hundred times. When it’s in the forest, it’s less warfare and more stakeout. She’s not paid enough to know what she’s looking for, but she always sees him. And she’s always been told not to shoot. She stops asking at some point, but like everything else with this man, she doesn’t quite remember when. Her life is a blur of missions and off time and him and nothing else.

It’s been months since the ravine and she’s seen König just about everywhere she’s been. When SpecGru was gathering intel on KorTacs drug affiliations, she saw him in the haunted deserts of Sonora, Mexico where she lies in the dirt redder than blood and coyotes sing her to sleep. She gazes down at him atop crumbling 16th-century Byzantine marble when she picks off the guards of a weapons supplier in Belgrade, Serbia. In the ancient and verdant bamboo forest of Yibin, China, hunting down spy affiliations, she camps across a creek from him for a night. 

It’s a small world, but not quite small enough for her to believe just how they keep running into each other. No matter where she ends up, their eyes always meet. 

The eyes of the apparition with bloody tears on top of an executioner's hood always flick right towards her, even when she’s under a ghillie or some camo or nothing particularly obtrusive at all. She’s even taken off her scope once or twice to reduce glare, to see if the monster still turns her way then. To see if the cat is following a laser pointer she’s unwittingly putting out. 

He does.

He always finds her.

No matter what.

This is such a nice surprise! Alot of what you're asking upfront can be discovered by just looking at everything I've posted about Mew thus far :) here's a few posts to get started though > Mew and Evie Part1 and Part2, follow ups to that part3 and Part4

Those are pretty good for catching up on what the "situation" between them is currently! The story is ongoing and I plan to reveal stuff about their past as well, slowly. I'd planned new developments to their current situation and adding more characters but I don't have the technical opportunities to do that now (irl stuff going on lol).

I've also answered tons of asks to talk about Mewmew in the past but I'm not sure how reliable tumblrs search function is... I'm very sorry. 🐟

Basic summaries!

Mewmew (Original intro post) - (m/ms or mew/mews) A mecha shapeshifter cat thing with a go getter attitude and a dark past in the Galactic alliance of public safety, aka a several galaxies wide military force. Mewmew has since retired due to preferring actually peaceful methods to attain peace. Now lives in a far off peaceful human village in the mountains and wants to live a normal life and do the little, everyday things that matter. If m could send a message to the world, it would be "Be kinder to everyone. This includes nyourself"

Evilicus - (they/them) An ex powerful demon lord covered head to toe in cursed armor, with a very nihilistic attitude and a grim perception of the world. Though since being defeated by the heroic Mewmew and hitting absolute rock bottom, they're aiming to do better, if at least for the sake of being fair to Mew, who ever so kindly offered them shelter even after their messy history. Rather oblivious to things we consider ordinary, and quite clumsy once you get past the spiky demeanor.

Their relationship - this may be subject to change as their story goes on but both have difficult feelings about each other I can say that much. Evie struggles with what's fair and acceptable behavior and tends to be jumpy around Mew as well as prone to outbursts (in fear or otherwise). Mewmew struggles with compassion fatigue and feeling like m needs to be a good person but struggling to find the limits and boundaries within that and knowing where to give or take in any situation.

Note that while the character premises are obviously silly, I do explore very dark topics in this story and I find alot of passion taking silly character archetypes and applying some level of realism onto them and putting them in situations that way :) it's not an "Edgy" reimagining, I genuinely love these characters and love exploring their roles in a story while balancing their inherent sillyness. Still, be warned!

Who chose to look like an earth cat, and is approximately under two meters tall. Frankly mew doesn't care for which one goes in the bowl first, ms eaten dry kibble before (yes, cat food.) but tends to prefer vegan options for milk, so soy rice or oat. I'd love to hear about one random headcanon you have about Greskrendtregk, if you'd like!

You know how in some videogames certain actions will get you a little "Clementine will remember that" or "Leliana <3 (+10)" message that pops up in the left hand corner? Please envision a "Traxanaxanos was so excited to answer this all day at work +100 Tumblr delight" message in the top left of your screen right now. Thank you for asking me about my favorite non-character, my specialist guy, Greskrendtregk Wildman.

Five facts exist about him in canon: his name is Greskrendtregk (name which has been passed down for five generations), he's a Ktarian, he's married to Samantha, and he was aboard Deep Space 9 when Voyager left. Samantha phrases it as "my husband is still at Deep Space 9" in Elogium, which I think was meant to imply more of a Starfleet assignment than him just chilling there as a civilian, and beta-canon then makes it explicit that he is enrolled in Starfleet as well. So - Deep Space 9 assignment:

Greskrendtregk is an engineer, but not the kind of Starfleet engineer we typically see involved with the engines and the warpcores of starships. I think he's much more interested in the immediate biological needs of living in space: the environmental controls, humidity and breathable air and comfortable temperatures, the structural soundness of bulkheads and walls. He's an HVAC guy, he does structural and mechanical engineering, he's who you call if life-support goes down, or if the ambassador from Betazed somehow accidentally sets the whole station to a relative humidity of 70% instead of just her quarters.

While this is of course a useful skill-set on starships, he's more interested in environemnts that are much more oriented towards long-term or permanent habitation, and preferably stationary (and boy after Samantha goes missing on a two week expedition does this sedentary tendency increase a thousand fold), such as space stations, nascent colonies, and far-flung research stations, which is why he was assigned to Deep Space 9.

Also, because I love him and because I love this ask: a bonus second headcanon!

Oddly enough, just the other day somebody liked an older post of mine, and when I clicked on it to remind myself of what it was, the next post down was your last message. Anyway, thanks! The whole novelization business is really funny. Do people even know what they are anymore? I didn't know anybody still made them until I was hired to do SPLICE. I used to get them from the drugstore sometimes when I was a kid because my parents were very uptight about what I watched, but they wouldn't be caught dead restricting anyone's reading habits. During my initial conversation with the SPLICE publisher, we kind of bonded over our memories of the CHILD'S PLAY 2 novelization, of all things, that seemed to help me a lot in addition to my ideas about what SPLICE should be like on paper. I tend to think of novelizations as just another piece of merch, but when you write them, I don't know, like you really have to live out the movie in your mind over and over again to figure out what the characters are experiencing physically, environmentally, how their emotional experiences affect their bodies, etc. You have to fill in the blanks of what they think and sense just enough to make your transcription convincing, while staying within certain bounds to honor what the filmmaker meant to say. SPLICE started as kind of a lark for me, and then almost immediately it became extremely personal; when I was nearing the end of my first draft I thought, "OK, well, I guess everyone is about to find out how insane I am." I was afraid it just sounded "crazy" and wouldn't be what the publisher was expecting. But after I turned it in, the surprise encouragement I got from actual-Vincenzo Natali was pretty amazing, so maybe it's good! Maybe you really CAN'T tell how crazy I am, and it's just very entertaining. You'll have to wait and see.

Parasocial relationships are tricky, huh, especially here on tumblr dot com. The best thing you can do for yourself is just be very aware that they are happening within you, a test you seem to have passed. I think a lot of us come here seeking understanding of our weirdest parts, but the more you put out there to find the people who get what you're saying, you simultaneously get a lot of reminders that most people have no idea what you're talking about. There will be people who seem to hate you because they've misunderstood you, and there will also be people who love you but whose interactions prove that they have absolutely no idea what you're communicating. I recently culled a bunch of followers because they were just creating a lot of noise, even though they may have meant well, and I was losing the clarity I needed to keep doing this. I started to see every post as a worrisome opportunity to find out how poorly people can possibly read me, and suppressing the urge to re-explain myself every day was becoming exhausting. And ironically, around the same time, I was briefly mutuals with one of my favorite bloggers ever, and just as I thought we were becoming chummy, they unfollowed me. I didn't freak out, actually I just unfollowed them back because I was concerned about being annoying, but I did have all kinds of Thoughts about this event. I have spent a lot of time reviewing what my projections were about that person, and what my personal investment in their narrative says about me. I think there could be something good to get out of this audit, even though the whole episode is sort of embarrassing. But Tumblr definitely gives you a lot of opportunities to examine your own filters, clean them out once in a while, and get to know yourself a little better--even if other people seem to be getting to know you a little worse! You just have to stick to your own course and see what comes of it.

Uh. What the hell was I saying. I don't know! But I appreciate your messages, I feel "gotten" by them. Some of the follower upheaval recently did involve the way that I process my experience of my own stupidity out loud on here--like I know that sometimes folks are trying to be helpful by contradicting me whenever I sound "negative" (read: realistic), but being told (by strangers) how to feel about yourself and that you're wrong about your own experiences is actually really awful, confusing, frustrating, and undermining. So I don't mind being reminded that my signal is coming through for at least some people. I hope you're doing good this holiday season. I wonder what beers you had, they sound fun!

This is a response to the article you posted earlier, and I wish I was brave enough to open up about this on my main account.

I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user, but I gave up my dream of field work two years ago when I was diagnosed with a life-long chronic illness. I was afraid of being labeled a "liability", so I never considered even trying to find a way to make things work.

I started going back to college this past winter to try to get a Bachelor's Degree in Ecology, but it's been rough. The last few months I've felt like I have just been spinning my wheels -pun somewhat intended- You don't have to respond to this. I just felt like I needed to thank you and tell you that you have helped make my day today a little bit brighter. Reading your article, seeing your smiling face while you hold a log full of bugs, and hearing your story- it made me feel more hopeful and less alone.

Sometimes I get scared, that being so visible and open about my disabilities will prevent me from getting a job and from achieving my dreams. I doubt myself, like am I even doing anything to help? All I really do is have this little Tumblr blog with less than 500 followers, and work with my professors to make my old campus a little more accessible.

And then I get messages from people like you, and I feel like I'm making the right choice. When I was starting out there was literally no space for disabled people in ecology, no advice, no outreach. I did a ton of research and while there are plenty of wonderful disabled activists, I couldn't find any who worked in environmental science. I felt so alone and was treated badly by some professors and classmates which discouraged me even more. So I started this blog hoping to meet more people like myself and compile advice and info for disabled people trying to break into the natural sciences. I've been super surprised with the amount of support and feedback I've gotten so far, the disabled community on Tumblr is so wonderful and willing to help eachother. I'm so happy I've been able to reach people like you which was my main goal all along.

Honestly I started tearing up a little reading your message, and it just empowers me even more to keep going and not be afraid to say yeah I'm disabled and I love working outdoors! I am a scientist! I won't stop fighting to get workplaces to see our value.

I'm so happy for you that you decided to go back to school! Please don't be afraid to ask for accommodations and utilize your university's disability services. It's okay to go at your own pace, I know money is an issue for most of us but it's better to take longer than to end up failing classes. The road to graduation may be harder for us but I know you can do it! Please keep me updated! And as always feel free to ask me any questions!

Welcome to Sickbay Saturdays!

What is it?

A weekly(ish) event to explore and celebrate unique possibilities for writing futuristic medicine! Run by @withalittlebitofwhump. Not just for Star Trek!

This is first and foremost a whump and hurt/comfort event, but we’re also here for futuristic medicine, cool leaps in medical science, body-focused SF, and transhumanism in fiction, especially that informed by and inclusive of disabled people.

How does it work?

Tag new posts "#sickbay saturdays”. We’ll reblog a selection of these posts, but this will also let participants find your content, even if we don’t reblog it.

For your older posts, either reblog and tag us, or send submissions or asks.

We’ll mainly post on Saturdays, EST, but there’s no strict cut off for participation! We plan on posting (automated) prompts Friday nights and monitoring tags on Saturdays.

Hi!

I'm Captain - writer, artist, and insufferable Londoner. I've been into whump my whole life but only on tumblr did I find an actual name for it and, to my shocked delight, a whole community of people like me! I don't tell people irl that I like it but maybe one day I will.

I love both fandom and OC whump though I create almost exclusively the latter. I have a couple of series in my masterpost and under the tag #captain's stuff. They're all some flavour of magical realism, with supernatural shenanigans, monsters, magic, and lots of stabbing.

My fave tropes are impaling, possesions, environmental whump, knives, fights, bruises, and choking. I like my whumpees defiant, whether in a tough way or a comic-relief way, and my caretakers out of their depths. I love the story of a regular person thrown into circumstances that are beyond them and I'll probably end up telling it 35 more times this year alone lol.

I'm. not great at talking lol. But I'm always open to send and get messages or asks! I also love events like WiJ though rarely finish them lmao. We'll see how this one goes 👀
