No use of carrying on without you
Relationship: Tyrannus Basilton "Baz" Pitch/Simon Snow
Words: 3517
Additional Tags: Watford Eighth Year (Simon Snow), Final Battle, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending, Blood and Violence, Minor Injuries, final battle fic, Angst, First Kiss, Getting Together, brief suicidal idealisation
I shake my head at Baz and he snarls. -Come on! - he hiss wetly from behind his teeth - Come on! No, I think with my heart beating wildly. I will not fight you. Not anymore. I let go of the hilt of the sword, nudging it with my fingertips so it fell between us, pointing at me. -You want it? It's yours. You can do the honors Baz. I watch hypnotized as Baz's lips start to tremble, as he bites down on his bottom lip - hard - trying to hide it, but it's useless considering his eyes are overflowing with tears. Ruthless, stone cold Basilton Pitch-Grim crying because I told him to kill me.
Or Final Battle AU, inspired by that one scene from Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Hey, SnowBaz lovers… i’m trying to prove to someone that the CO fandom does talk about Baz’s dramatic entrance, with the open sesame, because according to her it’s not a big deal in the fandom. So, if you could tag me on the fanarts you’ve seen of this scene and Baz beeing a drama vampire, I would really appreciate it❤️

not to rant about names Even More but i feel like it's worth revisiting just how good a piece of storytelling simon and esp baz's names are.
1. "baz pitch" and "simon snow" have opposite sounds to them. "baz" and "pitch" both sound explosive. they each start with a bang then turn into hissing - "pitch" in particular makes you spit and bare your teeth. "simon" and "snow", on the other hand, are quiet on the first letter then mostly open vowels and soft humming nasal sounds. they sound like gentle whispers or song. having one sound so gentle and the other sound so sharp captures the roles these two were put in very neatly.
(it's also worth noting that both names are a bit of a nightmare for someone with a lisp or stutter to say. it's not explicit in canon what simon's speech problems are - i tend to interpret it as semiverbal autism - but the fairytale narrative is not kind to anyone who struggles with speech.)
2. "pitch" and "snow", obviously, cast them as very basic fairytale opposites. black and white, hot and cold, villain and hero. it's clear, but it's not *so* in your face you roll your eyes every time you hear either name. "pitch" could also imply music and "snow" silence, relating to their way with words and lack thereof respectively, but i'll admit that that one's a stretch.
3. "grimm" covers: bleakness (grim), omens of death (church grim), dark fairytales (brothers grimm) *and* linguistics/academia (grimm's law - named for one of the brothers grimm). it also sounds like growling, complementing the catlike hissing of pitch without overdoing it.
4. "tyrannus basilton", suggests, at a glance, latin and greek, knowledge of which is traditionally a major marker of class. both are actually a little bit mangled: "tyrannus" is a latinisation of a greek word for king, tyrannos, but only the original greek would allow you to even pretend the name was older than the negative connotation: the latin is best known now from the phrase "sic semper tyrannis". it even *sounds* more like tyrannous. basileios is another greek word for king, but -ton is a purely english suffix that in a personal name doesn't mean much at all. it just adds length. and length adds prestige.
so why would a classical scholar like natasha do all that? my guess is it's a joke on rowell's part: they're so out of touch that they don't know or care how bad their showing off makes them look. the overall effect is *chef kiss* insufferable. pretentious beyond belief.
5. "tyrannus basilton" is a family name. "grimm" and "pitch" are the other sense of family names. baz is saddled with a ridiculous, archaic, cumbersome name and no part of it is uniquely his own. the weight of tradition leaves no room for individuality. his sense of belonging is absolute and inescapable - more of a belonging *to* than a belonging *with*. and yet despite that, he and his mother are the only people actually named "grimm-pitch" - he can find a unique connection amid all the impersonal parts.
6. "baz" is a very english nickname, but not especially posh - it works in any part of society. it's not out of place at boarding school, but it's not trapped there the way tilly or jonty would be. it could also fit in alongside normal nicknames like jack and beth. the fact that "tyrannus basilton" can be reduced to one sharp syllable informs you of two things: first, baz's ruthless efficiency, and second, his underlying disillusionment with tradition. he may be extremely privileged and he may enjoy tradition sometimes, but it would be both wrong and dangerous to assume he can't cut through the bullshit and look after himself when necessary. (he struggles, sometimes, but he does refuse to fight the war in the end.)
7. "simon", arguably, hints at the fact that simon is not the real chosen one. it means "listener", in a world where power comes speech. that grates against our expectations and suggests both his affinity for magic and his near inability to actually use it. in addition, it's a common name and has been for a very long time: there are so many people in the bible called "simon" or "simeon" that i really can't make out a clear reference there. there might be a theme of followers, witnesses and overlooked brothers, but then again, *most* people in the bible are not the main character. and maybe that's the point: once you get past the idea that he has to be the chosen one, "simon" is a popular name for a reason. familiar often-repeated names have power, not unique ones. a listener is not such a bad thing to be.
8. simon has another name, "salisbury", that he doesn't even know about yet. it is both a family name and a placename. it belonged to his mother. what he assumed was a family name, "snow", is in fact a unique middle name his mother gave him to try and foster his individuality - which can of course coexist with belonging, but can never replace it. his role as the chosen one has completely uprooted him from family and home and there is a hole in his heart he isn't even entirely aware of. he doesn't yet know just how much has been taken from him.
